SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

May 2022 The importance of having clear, reliable security images was highlighted on the news with the case of the vanished teenager, Rashid Elsaffi-Bakkar. The fourteen-year-old was last seen at home in Wembley, west London, on Sunday, March 20th. Assuming he went straight to school the following day, he was only reported missing at 5.30 pm on Monday 21st when the school confirmed that he had not attended school. His teachers said this was totally out of character for Rashid.

H

is image was picked up on security video footage walking with a backpack at 10.15 pm on Sunday 20th. The Police released the footage of the last sightings of Rashid, who was wearing a grey hooded top, dark coloured jacket and trousers and distinctive blue Nike trainers with a white logo, and carrying a light coloured rucksack. His distinctive blue trainers, also shown on CCTV footage from March 18th when Rashid visited his dentist, are a key identifier for the youth. The case remains unresolved as of April 1st.

Phone lines go all IP New solutions and support for installers and end-users are emerging to make the smoother for the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) transition to All IP. The switch should take effect in 2025, and it will mean that all landlines and many security alarm systems that rely on the analogue network will become obsolete. TECHNOLOGY

BT Redcare provides tangible support for installers on IP migration Tele-communications, as we know it, is changing now- and there is no way back. To future proof the UK, the whole of the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) will be migrated to IP by 2025. Landlines and many security alarm systems that rely on the analogue PSTN will become obsolete over the next three years.

T

he technology that powers the PSTN hasn’t changed since the first public automatic telephone exchange opened in 1912, and today it cannot cope with our XXI century digital demands. BT Redcare is encouraging installers to act now to ensure customers’ alarms keep working, avoiding disruption and helping homes and businesses stay safe. From the switch over, alarms will not be able to send signals to alert anyone. Migrating to an all-IP network and using 4G

mobile networks, provides an opportunity to achieve better, more reliable, and feature-rich services. All communications need to be considered, as they’ll have to be fully operating on the IP network by 2025. Anyone using a fire, security, or any other alarm system that isn’t already using IP or 4G for its alarm signalling will need to be upgraded before the telephone lines switch to an all-IP service. Many other systems may also rely on the PSTN, such as lift alarms, building management systems and power alarms so need to be considered. Communication providers have already migrated over 2 million lines to the new digital service.

Support for installers To help installers upgrade their customers, BT Redcare has recently launched a special offer cutting up to 51%* off the RRP on its Next Generation portfolio. Not only that, they are also providing a free all-IP marketing toolkit to help installers educate their customers which includes helpful flyers, brochures and videos The company is also offering free training for

T

akenaka Sensor Group began in 1959; Takex Europe was implemented in 1990 to service and nurture the European side of the business, which has grown to cover the entire EMEA region. Mike points out that, despite its global reach, Takex has never lost sight of the personal aspect of the business-building relationships 8

that have lasted decades, maintaining the focus of providing products that exceed expectations. “Finding reliable global or national partners who add value to the product portfolio with local market expertise, and maintaining and growing the established relationships. The products have been improved over time, but the formula of quality rather than compromise has been upheld.”

INNOVATORS

Offering wired and wireless solutions, Takex manufactures Photoelectric Beams, PIR, Attention Sensors, Flame Sensors, to name but a few. When it comes to false alarms, Mike controversially says that there are no such things as ‘false alarms.’ Watch the video interview to find out more. Benchmark Magazine: Can you describe your company in three words? Mike Burgess: Professional, Personal, Traditional BM: How many people do you employ today? MB: With a global complement of over 450 employees, Takex Europe is a small family of 7 people. BM: What do you consider are the Takex flagship products? MB: We have always had a reputation for producing the best point to point beams; our PBIN~HFA has been recognised as the industry’s benchmark for many years. Our latest product is the TXF-125DM, a battery-operated Quad beam designed to be compatible with all leading wireless systems, allowing Active Infrared Beams on rapid deployment temporary installations. If what’s needed is a detector that can cope with extreme environmental conditions, you

The PR-30BE uses ‘time of flight’ technology to measure light reception and timing. This means no more lost alarms from highly reflective objects such as white vehicles. It provides the performance of a traditional point-to-point beam sensor with the singleended convenience of a PIR detector. Twin Beams are the most commonly used beams. As the name suggests, there are two beams between transmitter and receiver units, both of which need to be broken to initiate activation. Twin Beams are ideal for protecting windows, doors, fence lines and driveways.

sureCore’s CompuRAM empowers computing at the Edge sureCore, the ultra-low power, embedded memory specialists, has announced its new technology for in-memory computing called CompuRAM. This will enable solutions for computing at the Edge to be more power efficient.

At present, sensor data often has to be sent from an IoT device to a server for processing, which creates a connectivity requirement and an unavoidable latency. For time critical applications this is not acceptable and so there is a drive to do more computation within the device itself, i.e., AI processing at the Edge.
