SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

March 2022 As springtime approaches, most of the people I have spoken to are getting excited about finally being able to meet in person at events in 2022. We have plenty of roadshows, such as the Hikvision Insight UK tour starting soon and UK trade shows appearing on our calendars once again. We will be visiting as many events as we can, but we’re particularly looking forward to IFSEC International and Firex in London in May. Let’s take advantage of these opportunities and meet in person; please get in touch if you want to catch up.

D

espite all of the widely reported political and social difficulties suffered in the past year, our industry has continued to evolve and provide new technology and solutions. To celebrate this I am very excited to announce that you will be able to put forward your nominations for the Benchmark Innovation Awards from March. The Benchmark Innovation Awards showcase organisations taking inventive approaches in the security sector to help find solutions for a complex and changing security environment with specific needs. Some solutions allow us to gather richer and more in-depth data using AI and better video technologies; others open opportunities to create hybrid solutions to bridge the gap. Think of products you have personally used or recommended and what made you think they were the best for the job. If you are a manufacturer or you provide a solution that you think is worthy of recognition, please go to the Benchmark website and enter your nominations. At the Innovation Awards, we aim to find those pioneering pieces of the security puzzle that have pushed through known limitations by creating new solutions or redefining what the issue is all together and then stepping up to solve it. Please don’t confuse innovation with invention - many inventions don’t push the boundaries and offer an innovative solution. We are looking for companies that have gone from common thinking and traditional

products to thinking outside the box, using interoperability and pushing the boundaries of what’s is so far known as possible. Your nominations, as our readers, are needed to highlight companies, services or products that you think merit special recognition. This year we have ten categories with the new Innovation Company of the Year award. 1 Video Management Software innovation 2 Surveillance innovation (CCTV) 3 Visitor Management innovation 4 Alarm/detection innovation 5 Analytics and software innovation 6 Security analytics innovation 7 Business Intelligence analytics innovation 8 Cloud/SaaS innovation 9 Network and Connectivity innovation 10 Innovator (Company) of the Year Award Anyone can nominate a security company or solution provider by completing the nomination form on our website and sending relevant information. Only one company can be nominated per category, but you can nominate in as many categories as you like. Nominations will be open from March 1st. The voting will open in May when we will reveal the finalists. The winners will be unveiled at a special in-person dinner in early September (details TBC). Voice your views! Participate!

TECHNOLOGY

Thermal cameras can be a money-saving investment Thermography can save money for larger sites needing a perimeter security system such as factories, utilities, highsecurity sites, marine yards, and critical national infrastructure.

U

nlike other cameras, thermal cameras don’t get triggered by accidental movements, such as the branches of a tree shaken by the wind. They provide proactive surveillance that can be used as an early warning of an issue arising, whether this is an intruder or machinery issue or failure. Thermal cameras also don’t need light to identify threats; hence they can work well at

night or in obscured scenarios. Vicon’s thermal sensor cameras provide 360° coverage of open spaces to detect, identify and track intruders. Combined with Vicon’s high-speed SN683D or V2002D PTZ dome cameras, the resulting product delivers situational awareness of any physical incursion that may threaten a facility or its perimeter. Thermal cameras can do the work

Ajax says that one of the most common requests amongst its customers is for a hybrid security system. In response to this, the company presented its first hybrid central unit and the new versions of hubs with 4G support. The combination of wired and wireless allows clients to cover larger areas at their facilities. The new Fibra product line of wired devices incorporates all the advantages of the wireless Jeweller products and greater coverage with minimal power consumption. Like in Jeweller devices, data transmission within Fibra is encrypted. The devices are

‘Martyn’s Law’ demands accountability Seven out of 10 respondents to the UK Government’s ‘Protect Duty’ public consultation agreed that those responsible for publicly accessible locations should take appropriate and proportionate measures to protect the public from attacks. This included ensuring staff were trained to respond appropriately.

I

n 2021, between February and July, the Government launched the consultation to ascertain how it might use legislation to

protect publicly accessible locations across the UK from terrorist attacks and ensure organisational preparedness. 2,755 responses were received from various organisations, sectors and campaigners, with the majority supporting the Government’s proposals to introduce more robust measures, including a legal requirement for some public places to ensure preparedness for and protection from terrorist attacks. Although there was no mention of specific technology solutions to be used, there is a recognition that adequate security requires a partnership approach, with Government, police, the security services, the wider public sector, businesses, and the public all having a role to play. The Government said that if a legislative Protect Duty were to be introduced, Government support for all organisations within its scope would have to be enhanced.

Using traffic management solutions to cut carbon emissions We are at an inflexion point in the battle against climate change, states Uri Guterman, Head of Products and Marketing, Hanwha Techwin Europe. Scientists have been warning us about the damage carbon emissions are doing to our planet.

N

ow they are beginning to observe widespread, unprecedented changes across the whole climate system. Some

of these are irreversible over hundreds, to thousands, of years. The good news is that we still have the opportunity to limit climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a UN body that assesses the science of climate change, states that “…strong and sustained reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases would limit climate change.” Beyond tackling climate change, limiting carbon emissions will also improve many people’s quality of life by improving air quality in their towns and cities. Air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks to health and cutting emissions reduces the onset and mortality from stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases like asthma.

MOBOTIX acquires Vaxtor Group MOBOTIX has acquired Vaxtor Group ( Vaxtor), based in Tres Cantos, Spain. Vaxtor is a specialist in Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning technologies.

V

axtor has been a MOBOTIX Technology Partner since 2020, during which they collaborated on global projects. MOBOTIX has also gained a deep insight into Vaxtor’s product architecture as well as software development, hence the move to join forces. Vaxtor’s OCR analytics technology is used in the automated capture of e.g., letters, numbers, barcodes or other machine-readable data. It enables such information to be recorded and processed cost-effectively at high speed and to trigger related processes. OCR technology is a door opener in deep learning in the vertical target markets defined by MOBOTIX, e.g., in the application of license

plate recognition and beyond – in the commercial sector for the recognition of containers, vehicles and airplanes or the monitoring of supply chains, and others. Market research predicts that the world market for ALPR solutions will increase from $ 2.3 billion to $ 3.8 billion by 2025. Vaxtor enhances MOBOTIX’s strategic orientation in Deep Learning as Vaxtor can run ALPR decentralised via apps with competitive advantage against a number of competitors. Sector research company Novaira Insights expects worldwide (ex-China) average growth of revenues of 66% p.a. (CAGR) for Deep Learning cameras for 2020- to 2025.
