INTEGRITY AND MAINTENANCE

Need to hydrotest drinking water components? Try VpCI-649 HP Cortec has formulated a solution to provide corrosion protection for hydrotesting drinking water components.

N

ew waterlines, valves, and tanks need to be hydrostatically tested to check for leaks or failures before officially performing their fluid handling role. But what if these parts are made of metal at risk for corrosion? Furthermore, what if they are destined for a potable water drinking application with limits on which chemicals can be used? Cortec answers these questions with the VpCI®649 HP, a corrosion inhibiting hydrotest additive for drinking water system components. The VpCI-649 Series is well-known in the oil and gas industry and other sectors that regularly perform hydrostatic testing (hydrotesting). This additive helps protect systems from flash rust at a vulnerable time when water is flushed through, pressurized, and drained. However, until last year, no versions of VpCI-649 could be used when hydrotesting drinking water components. Cortec has solved that problem by formulating the VpCI-649 HP, a hydrotest additive certified to meet ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for drinking water system components when used as a surface treatment at concentrations up to 3 per cent and drained. It is effective at dosages as low as 0.3 per cent by weight and has an extremely low chloride contribution (less than 0.6 ppm) when used at this rate, making it viable for use in applications with tight chloride restrictions. Because it protects steel, copper, galvanized steel, and aluminium, VpCI-649 HP covers a

wide range of possible drinking water system components. It contains a hardwater stabiliser and organic dispersing agent but does not contain nitrite, phosphate, molybdenum, or chromate. Beyond hydrotesting, VpCI-649 HP can be used for long-term protection in water and glycol closed-loop systems. “If you have potable water tanks, valves, or

piping that need hydrotesting, but you are concerned about the potential corrosion that could follow, give yourself peace of mind by opting for VpCI-649 HP as your hydrotest additive,” Savor said. This product is available through Savcor Products Australia in Australia and New Zealand.
