ShiningMountainWaldorfSchoolalso hascircuscampscoveringthefundamentals forrisingfirstthroughfifthgradersandan advancedcircusforthoseinsixthgradeand up.

“Circusartstapintoastudent'sathletics skills,showpersonship,andcreativetheatrical skills,”Kransays.“Thisuniqueoffering providesabalanced—nopunintended! —opportunityforallskilllevelstolearn somethingnewaboutthemselves.”

Inlowerandmiddleschoolathletic

camps,programsaredesignedtoimprove teamwork,leadershipanddedicationwhile buildingconnectionswithfriends,Kran says.AndinHandworkandCrafting(called handworkinWaldorf),theprojectsstrengthen concentrationandhand-eyecoordination.

“Handworkcanalsohelpenhancemath skillsthroughcountingrowsandstitches, measuringoutpatterns,andcreatingthreedimensionalitems,”shesays.Childrenlearn tocorrecttheirmistakes,valuehardworkand developpatience.”

AtFlagstaffAcademy,campersaregrouped byageandtheacademyoffersseveralcamps. YoungercampersingradesK-4aretaken onthreetofourfieldtripsperweek,with walkingtripstoDairyQueenforatourof theshopandsundae-building,plusoutingsto adventureparks,trampolinecentersandmore.

“Whennotonfieldtrips,wehaveon-site activitiessuchasbikeandscooterdays,water playattheschool,science,cooking,artsand crafts,harvestingfruitsandveggiesinour on-sitegreenhouseandgarden,”saysJeanna Peppler,thesummercampdirector.Flagstaff alsobringsinvendorslikeCrackpotspottery studio.

Olderteencampersreceiveseasonpassesto ElitchGardensAmusementandWaterParks

aspartoftheirsummercampregistrations. Whennotatthethemepark,thecamptakes itsteencamperstoareapools,skatingrinks, andtrampolineandadventureparks.

“Oursummercampkeepsthecampers extremelybusyandengaged,”Pepplersays. “InallofthefeedbackIhavereceivedfrom familiesandcampersovertheyears,the predominantthemeisthattheylovethatno twodaysarethesameandwedon'tjuststay on-sitebecauseit'seasier.Ifweareonsite,we jumpfromactivitytoactivity,andoffsitewe areusingourbrainsandbodiesallday.”

Flagstaffalsooffersweek-longspecialty campsinconjunctionwithtraditional summercamps.Pastexamplesinclude“The ArtofCooking,”“MinecraftCo-Op,”“Epic Science,”“LegoMindstorms,”and“Cake Decorating.”Eachsummerhasatheme atFlagstaff,too.Thisyear’sisallabout exploration;lastyear’swasmagic,andthe campbroughtinmagicianstoperform.

BixbySchooloffersbothapreschooland elementaryageddaycamp,servingcampers aged2andahalfthroughrising6thgraders.

“Someuniquebenefitsincludeweoffer achef-preparedluncheveryday,wehavea swimmingpoolonsite,andthereareweekly fieldtripsscheduledforourElementaryAged DayCamp,”saysHannahWickenheiser, directorofauxiliaryprogramsandstudent supportteammember.“Ourcampusalsosits on3-acreswhichprovidesamplespaceforour camperstospendmostoftheirdayoutside”

In2023,BixbySchoolwillconsistentlyoffer afieldtripeveryweekofcampandfivedaysof swimmingforourelementary-agedcampers.

“Personally,myfavoriteprogramiswhenwe makes'moresinoursolaroven,”Wickenheiser says.“It'ssofuntoseethecampersengagein thisprojectandtherewardsaredelicious.” FriendsSchoolalsoofferspopularsummer camps,withprogramsforstudentsages 3to14.Theprogramsspanfromapreschool backyardcamptoclassesintheater,cooking, science,art,sportsandmore.

Thegrowingpopularityofracket sportsgetsfullcourtpresswhile winningtheheartsandmindsof playersacrossmultiplegenerations —frombabyboomerstoschool-agedkids. GenZ,thelargestgroupofplayerslobsnearly 23percentinparticipation,comparedto millennials,at19percent,accordingtoa 2022reportpublishedbyStatistia.

Whatgiveswiththeresurgenceofracket sports,youask?Paddlesportsliketennis, racquetball,pickleballandpadel(across betweentennisandsquash)bringsout fiercecompetitorsandthegamesentertain spectatorswhoeagerlywatchplayersdance acrossthecourttolobthewinningshot. It’snoexaggerationtosaysportsfanshave

Encouragetheprocess:Peopleoften withholdpraiseuntilthere’saresult,which leadschildrentohurriedlyscribbleapicture toholdupfora“goodjob”insteadof takingtimetofocusontheirefforts.When

Modelagrowthmindset:Youcanmodel agrowthmindsetforchildrenbynarrating youractionswhenyouarefacingachallenge: “Iamhavingadifficulttimeputtingthisshelf together,butit’sOK.I’lltakeabreakthen readtheinstructionsagain.”Removenegative wordsfromyourvocabulary,suchas“Ican’t” or“I’mstupid.”Evenwhenyouarejoking, childrenmaynotbeabletotellthedifference. Youcanalsoaskyourchildrentojoinyouin problem-solving.Taketimetoheartheirideas andtrythemevenifyouthinktheywon’t work.Thisnotonlysupportsthedevelopment oftheirgrowthmindset,butthequalitytime andencouragementreinforcestheirsenseof self-worthandbuildsconfidence.

Betweengrowingupduringaglobal pandemic,lockdowndrillsatschool,andthe incessantpullofmessagingappsandsocial media,it’snowonderourkids’mentalhealth issuffering.A2022surveyfoundthat15 percentofyouthages12to17reportedat leastonemajordepressiveepisodeintheprior year.Whilenothingcanorshouldreplacethe skilledcareofamentalhealthprofessional, theloveandcompanionshipofafour-legged friendcanbeavaluableformofemotional supportforyourchild.
