A Note from the Performing Arts Department It is hard to believe that it has been a year since we last gathered as a community for a Poly Arts concert. I love the Winter Concert: the Chapel packed full of people, warm lights from the wreaths, and the joy spread by the music shared. I am sad that we will miss it this year, and I cannot wait until we can be together again. Our music classes and ensembles began the year with a lot of questions: How can we make music despite the numerous health concerns and safety restrictions? If we figure out a way to make music, will it still be fun? Will ensembles still feel the connection created by making music together? As the year progressed, we answered those questions and achieved results beyond any expectations. While it has been incredibly different, we have been able to continue students’ music education, we have made music together, and we have had so much fun along the way. Our time on campus allowed us to connect, collaborate, and perform. For some of our ensembles with fewer restrictions, like Jazz Band and String Ensemble, the fall was an opportunity to show the rest of the school what happens in our classes every day, and to enliven the campus with music. Our choirs and bands worked within the restrictions and found ways to connect and make music with masks and bell covers, 12 feet of distance, technology, and creativity. I am so proud of the work we share tonight and the tenacity of my colleagues and our students, and I am so full of hope that we will be together again soon!
