BAHRAIN The BAPCO Modernisation Programme (BMP) represents a major expansion and upgrade for the facility that will allow the total refinery throughput to increase up to a maximum of 380,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Its resid hydrocracking unit converts 78 per cent of lower grade feedstock into distillates which will then be refined into high margin diesel and kerosene. It will take 90 million safe man-hours to build. The BMP project will create more than 1,500 new jobs during construction, and 150 permanent high-skill jobs. It’s estimated that every job at BAPCO creates 12 more jobs in Bahrain. The programme will require a total of 24,000 contractor staff on site. Oman Mining Expo Taps Investment Opportunities in the Sector
T
he Oman government’s Vision 2040, which identifies mining as one of the focus sectors for enhancing competitiveness and growth, promises much potential for the sector, boding well for this developing industry. The strategy, along with recent discoveries of substantial amounts of mineral deposits and the large-scale projects underway in Oman offers numerous opportunities for investment in mineral development, mining and quarrying exploration and operations. JCB Launches New Open Generators for Middle East JCB Power Products is adding to its popular S range of generators, with the addition of seven new open set models, aimed at a wide range of industries in the rapidly expanding Middle East and African markets. All models are powered by the well-supported Volvo diesel engines and feature Mecc Alte alternators, Deep Sea Electronics (DSE) controllers and Schneider switchgear. The range is offered in both 50Hz and 60Hz frequencies, with a standby output of 275kVA to 770kVA at 50Hz and 375kVA to 750kVA standby power at 60Hz. The new models will be powered by the 7, 13 and 16 litre engines, and coupled together with high efficiency Mecc Alte alternators to deliver a dependable generator offering reliability and fuel efficiency. The engines provide smooth, low vibration operation, together with low noise levels, making it the ideal solution for installation into a noise sensitive location. Flexible exhaust bellows and a range of engine exhaust silencer options ensure easy integration of the generator into a plant room or other fixed installation. To provide ultimate strength and durability, a robust base frame has been designed with a 110% capacity bund and a drop in fuel tank. To aid lifting and positioning, JCB has fitted integrated fork pockets and lifting points as standard. Monitoring of operational performance is easy with a range of DSE controllers. ith top executives from Singaporebased Giti Tire gathered in Dubai, the company inaugurated its first Middle East Giti flagship store on 7th March, 2019. s part of a huge investment driving its expansion into the mobile access sector, rental giant Byrne Equipment Rental (Byrne) recently placed an order for 166 Genie® mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPS). Retrofit of Ammann Control Systems Gives Technology Boost to Socogetra’s Asphalt Mixing Plants
S
ocogetra S.A. is one of Belgium’s leading civil engineering and road construction companies. Several of the Ammann plants in Socogetra’s fleet of asphalting equipment still have long service lifetimes ahead of them – but their control systems (the key technology of the plants) were starting to become outdated. As Eric Perard, Industry Director at Socogetra, explains: “Our old Ammann AS2000plus Control System has functioned superbly for many years, and it has performed excellently throughout its lifetime. Nevertheless, we needed to take advantage of the latest technological advances offered by Ammann’s as1 Control System so that we could continue 32 PlantAndEquipment.com | April 2019
to produce high-quality asphalt and anticipate our future requirements.” The Ammann Global 300 at Marche-enFamenne, Belgium, was the first asphalt-mixing plant to benefit from a retrofit. This project was completed so smoothly and effortlessly that Socogetra decided to repeat the process on its plants at Bastogne and Arlon, which produce as much as 60 000 tonnes of asphalt each year. The as1 was therefore installed on the Ammann Global 160 and the Ammann Global 200. Ammann’s tried-and-tested retrofit procedure was followed during all three conversions to
latest NEWS // AMMANN the as1 Control System. Ammann experts reviewed each of the existing systems and then incorporated current modules into the new as1 configuration for each asphalt-mixing plant. Conversion from the AS2000plus to the as1 Control System took just half a day, and staff training only required another 48 hours. Ammann technicians were on hand for a further 15 days to ensure that the conversion went smoothly, and to give the operators a thorough understanding of how the system works. “The handoff to the as1 system was completed very quickly,” Perard notes. “This software is highly intuitive. The main advantages are technological. We have better control over production, and we benefit from more alerts and settings to allow in-depth monitoring and control. And control is more flexible. Our plant managers and operators are equally pleased with the changeover.“ The as1 was developed to handle multiple recipes with high precision. “It’s very simple to adjust recipes,” Perard points out. “Everything goes very quickly.” The system also makes it possible to use recycled asphalt (RAP). “We can now use 20 per cent RAP – which we were not
incorporating before the retrofit,” Perard explains. “In the longer term, we aim to boost this result to reach 30 per cent,” he adds. The savings made possible by a retrofit as compared to purchasing a new asphalt-mixing plant will assist Socogetra with its acquisition of the Enrobage Stockem company; and, as the key benefit, the reliability and quality of asphalt production will also be improved. The company is taking on large-scale projects in Belgium as well as other countries. These include roads and motorways, railways for high-speed trains, main and branch pipework installations, sewage treatment and environmental projects, and also commercial and industrial infrastructure projects. “With our strong foothold in the Walloon region of Belgium, we can quickly organise suitable specialised teams that are readily available and highly efficient,” Perard comments. “Our own quarries, asphalt mixing plants and concrete plants give us the capabilities to meet all supply-side requirements. And thanks to our thorough knowledge of the environment, the materials and the expectations of our many customers, we can offer them the services and benefits of a high-calibre partnership.”

Wirtgen W 220 Mills Surface Course at the Foot of Mont Blanc in Half the Time Somewhat surprisingly, the Wirtgen W 220 large milling machine’s first job in Italy did not take the high-performance machine to a highway but to a winding country road at the foot of Mont Blanc in the northwest of the country. It was at this location that the extremely powerful 577-kW machine made its mark, milling the surface twice as fast as scheduled. 10 km of new surface course along the route to the peak The Strada Statale 26 (SS 26) stretches from the flat landscape of Piemont to the Alpine regions around Mont Blanc and includes a link to the Mont Blanc Tunnel. The road winds its way up to the Aosta Valley, reaching altitudes of almost 1,000 m and all sections are heavily trafficked, both by tourists and freight traffic. It is used by an average of some 5,000 vehicles per day. The road was due for rehabilitation in the summer of 2018: The 4 cm-thick surface course was to be renewed across the entire width along a 10-km section. In some sections, rehabilitation of the 10 cm-thick binder course was due as well. Cost-efficient quality Full road closures are extremely difficult to achieve in the Alps, and so only one side of the SS 26 was blocked at one time when the road was rehabilitated in July and August 2018. But the contractor, Italfrese s.r.l., a Piemontbased company and one of Italy’s largest milling contractors, was able to shorten the
construction period by using the W 220. This is partly due to the machine ability to mill across 2.2 m in a single pass, meaning that just two passes were required in most areas, rather than three. What’s more, the milling machine operated at an advance rate of 28-30 m/min – even at inclines of around 5%. Ultimately, the milling contractor completed the milling work in just half the time that would have been estimated for one of the smaller machines usually used on confined sections such as those on the Alpine pass. And all of this without compromising on quality. Ernesto Franco and Emanuele Franco, Managing Director and Technical Director of Italfrese, were well aware of the time savings when planning the job: “In the run-up, we investigated which of our 12 milling machines could complete this job as economically and quickly as possible. And the answer was: the new W 220. Though the milling machine was operating at quite a high milling speed, it had not yet reached its technical limits. The immense engine power and the sophisticated control system enabled the machine to mill at a constant speed, even in regions at higher altitudes and on hairpin bends – a feat achieved while maintaining a moderate fuel consumption.“ Milling performances like these are achievable thanks to the excellent weight-to-power ratio of the new W 220: An operating weight of 36,360 kg meets an engine output of 571 kW (777 HP). Thanks to the 2.20-m milling width, Wirtgen’s W 220 was able to mill off the surface course across the full width of the roadway in just two tracks on most sections of the highway. The result: a 50% time saving.
layer, leveling unevenness in the surface course or increasing the grip, but also by removing entire roadways down to a maximum milling depth of 350 mm in a single pass. The Franco brothers agree: “This extra power often makes all the difference on large, timecritical projects at airports or on highways.” Particularly when operating at large milling depths, the W 220 has another handy feature up its sleeve. The right-hand side plate can be raised by 450 mm, so that a curb can be scanned as a reference, even when working at large milling depths, and the machine can remove the pavement completely. A glance at the traction drive shows that its power is harnessed intelligently, since Wirtgen has equipped the W 220 with the intelligent ISC traction drive. It delivers optimum traction with electronic traction control, adapts the advance rate of the machine to the current engine load and regulates the current speed of the external and internal crawler tracks on bends. On the SS 26, this was particularly advantageous on the many hairpin bends. Optimum milling result thanks to adapted milling drum speed Thanks to the variable milling drum speed of the W 220, on which three speeds can be set from the operator’s stand, the machine operator can also influence the milling texture, i.e. the surface finish and the peakto-valley depth. For the project on the SS 26, the Italfrese team decided to combine the 36 PlantAndEquipment.com | April 2019
maximum milling drum speed with a high advance rate when milling off the surface course. Meanwhile, the HT 22 quick-change tool-holder system and type W 7 cutting tools ensured cost-efficiency. High machine utilization Thanks to its powerful engine, the W 220 has plenty of steam, even when operating at large milling widths. The large milling machine therefore is not only available with the standard 2.2-m milling drum assembly, but also is optionally available with a 2.5 m-wide version. To enable the machine to flexibly produce certain surface textures, the “FCS Light” milling drum changing system also is optionally available for the 2.2-m milling drum assembly. As a result, milling drums can be exchanged quickly for drums with another tool spacing – be it standard milling drums, Eco Cutters or fine milling drums – equipping the machine for a wide range of different applications. Quiet power development Despite creating a machine with an immense power development, Wirtgen’s development engineers were able to greatly reduce noise emissions. The Italfrese team immediately noticed this on the job at the foot of Mont Blanc. Thanks to this feature, the team has no concerns about working in residential areas, and indeed the milling contractor already has such a job lined up for its new powerhouse.

CAT® M SERIES WHEEL LOADER (950M - 982M) Product Update Aimed at Reduced Maintenance Costs, Improved Operator Comfort, Payload Management Enhancement, and New Configurations
The 2019 product update package for Cat® M Series Medium Wheel Loaders (950M - 982M) includes technology advances that provide: lower operating costs via extended service intervals; enhanced operator comfort with new seats and suspensions; emissions control strategies to meet EU Stage V standards (EU only); added machine configurations (982M Forestry Machine and 982M High Lift); expanded productivity measurement tools; remote software update capability; and refinements in ground engaging tool and coupler systems. Periodic updates allow Caterpillar to bring new and improved features to market more quickly and more frequently than do conventional New Product Introduction (NPI) cycles.
Extended service intervals, emissions control U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V models save maintenance costs by extending engine oil, engine oil filter and hydraulic oil filter change intervals from 500 hours up to 1,000 hours. Based on estimated comparisons of total engine and hydraulic fluids, filters, and sampling costs during a 6,000-hour period, costs can be potentially reduced by 16 to 23 percent. (For Tier 3 equivalent models, extended intervals apply only to hydraulic filters.)
Cat M Series 2019 Update, New Seat
In addition, several fuel and engine oil filters are being converted from spin-on to cartridgetype. Benefits of cartridge-type filters include fewer parts to replace at servicing (housing is retained), easier disposal of used elements, and less costly replacement parts. Next Generation seats and suspensions The “next generation” of seats and suspensions offers three trim levels-comfort, deluxe, and premium plus-and feature high-visibility, seat-adjustment controls, as well as ride stiffness adjustments. A new “breakthrough” suspension for deluxe and premium plus trim levels increases dampening at the top and bottom of seat travel, providing additional suspension stability and avoiding hard stops at travel limits. The ride stiffness of the seat suspension is adjustable to different settings, allowing operators to tailor seat dampening to individual preferences and to the application. This feature was previously included only with EH steering (joystick and wheel), but with the 2019 product update, it is now included with HMU steering wheel units with deluxe and premium plus seats.

Cat 972M MWL Payload management The Cat Advanced Productivity application is a web-based tool used to visualize machine production-related data and complements Cat PAYLOAD, Cat Production Measurement 2.0. The tool is accessed from VisionLink™ and includes a user-customizable report dashboard, cycle-by-cycle downloadable data, and a list of features for truck and material identification lists. Other key features include a new user interface (mobile friendly), time series data, multiple asset comparison, fleet or individual asset keyprocess-indicator target settings, and support for multiple machine types. Requirements for use include cellular Product Link™, Advanced Productivity subscription, and authorized User ID. Remote flash support Remote flash support allows the dealer to push software update files to the customer’s machine and authorizes the user to initiate installation via the dealer service portal. Any authorized user with CWS (Caterpillar Corporate Web Security ID) and a mobile device can initiate flash, which occurs in 30 minutes from initiation
to completion. This service is provided at no cost to dealer for machines for machines with cellular Product Link, (standard on current 950 - 982 medium wheel loaders except the 950 GC), with remote-flash-compatible software. CWS authorization and mobile device required to initiate. New 982M configurations New configurations in the medium wheel loader lineup include the 982M Forestry Machine and the 982M High Lift. The new 982M Forestry Machine (logger) is capable lifting 28,000 pounds (12 700 kg) with a pin-on mill yard grapple. Changes from the standard 982M include a larger tilt cylinder, upgraded rear frame, and heavier counterweight. Third party logging grapples and woodchip buckets are available. Compared to its predecessor, this second generation of the camera is completely digital, enabling the system to deliver sharper and higher quality images in HD resolution to a 10” HD touch display. Production of the ProViu 360 digital version as a general application for a bird’s-eye view is planned for 2020. Many other special fields of application can also be based on the ProViu 360, such as precise edge control during rolling operations. The ProViu 360 can also become intelligent with the next step, because valuable additional information like radar data and tire pressure can be fed into the system.
