Dear Neighbors, I’m so excited that the holiday season is finally upon us! As many of us turn our attention to holiday shopping in advance of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, I want to encourage everyone to shop locally with our small businesses here in West and Southwest Philadelphia.
Small businesses are the backbone of our city. They sustain our neighborhoods, provide essential services to our communities, employ a diverse array of Philadelphia residents, and foster our local economy, keeping money close to home. So when Philadelphia’s small businesses suffer, our whole city feels the impact. The past couple of years have been especially hard for our small business community. Many of Philadelphia’s commercial corridors have been hit with multiple crises: COVID-19, a recession, property damage due to civil unrest, and supply chain challenges. Because of all this, it’s more important than ever that we find new ways to lift up independently-owned businesses.
And that brings me to the guide you’re reading right now – it’s our first-ever 3rd District Holiday Shopping Guide! In the pages to come, you’ll find information on businesses across West and Southwest Philadelphia that have great gift ideas for friends, colleagues, and loved ones. I love the arts community here. I love that there are so many different kinds of people, all making art in various ways. What’s important to you about having your business in West/Southwest Philly? I opened Black Hound because I saw the opportunity for so many different members of the community to have art experiences. As an artist, it’s very hard to find affordable studio space. I saw there wasn’t much of that on this side of the city, and there were a lot of folks looking for that – whether to rent space, or to take a class or a workshop. It’s amazing what Black Hound has tapped into, all the people making amazing art all over this neighborhood. What kinds of holiday gifts can people buy from your business? We also have project kits, which are self-contained kits that have everything you need to make a specific project – a mug, a planter, or a geode bowl. When you buy the kit, firing is included. So once you make it, you bring it to our studio and then come back to get the finished product! We also offer e-gift cards that can be used towards classes and workshops.

When I first moved to Southwest Philly, I was moved by how welcoming my neighbors were. The community in this corner of the city is so willing to help one another, and to be kind. Those are exactly the morals I want my organization to have. What better way to give back to my community that’s helped me in my times of need, than to offer free arts programming to the community? What about having your business in West/Southwest Philly is important to you? It’s important to have affordable studio spaces so that artists at all income levels can afford to practice their art. A lot of arts opportunities are really centralized in a couple parts of the city that are extremely expensive to live in. For people who live in West Philly, it’s difficult to get up to the arts districts. It’s important to me to provide arts opportunities here in West and Southwest Philly, where they’re easily accessible to people who live here. What kinds of holiday gifts can people purchase with you? Handmade art kits, block prints, art lesson kits, coloring books, can give out gift certificates or credits for classes, we do have vacation camps for kids, shared studio memberships and studio session cards, and more!

My customers are middle class African American women. In my mind, this is the best possible location, it’s so central. The community is well-established, it’s been around for a long time. What’s your favorite thing about West/Southwest Philly? Natasha: The community! This neighborhood is so community centered. Even the neighboring businesses have been so inviting. Kim: I don’t know that I’ve ever entered a space and felt such a warm and inviting welcome. This community has been so supportive of us coming in – it’s amazing. What’s important to you about having your business in West/Southwest Philly? Kim: Really just the simple fact that West Philly is so very vibrant. It’s wonderful to be able to be part of that—but more than that, to be a space that reflects that. This is only made possible by what surrounds us. You become what you surround yourself with. This is an extraordinary neighborhood. I wouldn’t do it anywhere else. What kinds of holiday gifts can people expect to find in your shop? Natasha: We have an ongoing gift that we offer – it’s a fund called Pay it Forward, and we invite people to donate into this fund. Our whole mission is that everyone deserves a seat at the table. Everyone deserves to afford a cup of coffee in the neighborhood. Maybe someone’s a dollar short, or just needs a warm drink. We can pull from this fund, which is all donations, to pay it forward for someone else. People can do this as part of their holiday donations. Kim: This stems out of our social justice work. We’re really looking to bring actual equity to this neighborhood. We want everyone in here, we want every voice. Everyone’s perspective is important and unique, every voice needs to be heard.
