A dedicated staff and passionate volunteer network work to improve and strengthen the community and businesses, big and small. Since 1954, Perry Economic Development has attracted businesses and advanced the economic well-being of Perry. Beyond attracting new business and jobs, the organization works to create a climate for existing industries to grow. As a catalyst for economic development, PED partners with the City of Perry and others to support sustainable growth and development of the city.

Focus on Business

The Perry Commercial Park is comprised of nearly 12 acres located at the intersection of Willis Avenue and Highway 141 at the east edge of Perry. The park is a short 25-minute drive from Interstates 35 and 80, and only 40 minutes from downtown Des Moines.

Farm Credit Services of America anchors the park with its headquarters.

Growing Industry

The Perry Industrial Park includes over 150 acres certified for light industrial development. With an eye toward development and to address the building shortage in the region, PED has been proactive in developing shell buildings for lease or purchase. As a shovel-ready Certified Site, this established Research and Science Park has had all surveys completed and provides access to utility infrastructure.

Workforce Development

Workforce Development is a cornerstone of PED’s ongoing commitment to look for inventive ways to partner with DMACC Perry VanKirk Career Academy, Perry High School and Perry member companies to help address employment needs in the community. Hands-on programs prepare students for jobs in high demand careers in manufacturing, healthcare, and education. The efforts include PED-sponsored scholarships and mentoring.

Public/Private Partnership

The investment in Hotel Pattee and LaPoste by PED, the City of Perry, the local foundations and PED member companies is a true example of the kind of partnership efforts that allow Perry to flourish. Through generous donations, PED was able to buy the historic hotel, as well as the event space, and is working to create sustainable operations while also preserving the integrity of the world-class facilities.

trolling through downtown Perry, each step reveals people and places that honor the past and celebrate a vibrant future. Sculptures and public art installations that pay homage to the city’s railroad history, its industrial background, its agricultural underpinnings and its artistic character line the streets. Indeed, the city’s well-earned reputation as an arts community is evident in its galleries and artisan shops, as well as in the artwork that graces the walls of many downtown buildings.

The centerpiece of downtown, the historic Hotel Pattee, is a symbol of how Perry’s past and present merge for a bright future for this vibrant community. Built in 1913, the hotel welcomes guest from across the globe in a beautifully renovated space that features spectacular art and architectural details, and includes a bowling alley, restaurant, conference space, and other amenities to be enjoyed by local residents and the many visitors welcomed each year.

Along Perry’s main streets, renovated historic structures house thriving businesses. Restaurants serving many types of food; shops selling a variety of goods; a movie theater showing first-run films; and spaces inviting you to sit for a spell dot the area.

This charming scene serves as a backdrop for a place where locals and visitors alike can share community and culture during day-to-day life or at one of the many special events that take place in Perry.

From a Farmers Market downtown each Thursday from June to September, to live music and multiple art fairs, the opportunity to connect with creativity and meet friendly people spans the calendar.

Perry is a great place to do business. Its healthy and diverse economy includes large manufacturers, service providers and small businesses. A bustling downtown, as well as business and commercial parks, are part of the strong foundation. A history of public/private partnerships are forward-looking and

have made the community stronger.

When it comes to recreation, the area’s natural surroundings provide opportunities to bike and hike, explore local parks or swim at the community center. An exciting development marked the summer of 2024 when two of Iowa’s most popular and iconic trails - the Raccoon River Valley Trail (RRVT) and the High Trestle Trail (HTT) - were connected to create a 120mile continuous loop. The Hiawatha Trail originates in downtown Perry and provides easy access to this scenic route; and, people using the trial can take advantage of Perry’s hospitality with shopping, dining and lodging.

This special place with a small-town feel is just a stone’s throw away from larger cities and has retail options including home décor and home improvement stores, local artwork, gift shops, antiques sellers and clothing boutiques among others.

Location

Perry is located just 40 miles northwest of the Des Moines metro, 40 miles southwest of Ames, and within a short day’s drive of such major Midwest cities as Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Omaha and St. Louis. Not far from the crossroads of Interstates 80 and 35, or the Des Moines International Airport, Perry is well positioned for commuters, day trippers, and world travelers.

With great recreational trails, a vibrant art scene, shopping, restaurants, educational opportunities and more, Perry offers a friendly, small-town environment just a short drive from larger cities. An affordable cost of living and loads of small-town charm are why some 8,000 people call Perry home and many more visit each year.

WELCOME Its proximity to metro areas and connection to many transportation networks – motor vehicle, air, and rail – has enabled Perry to build a strong manufacturing base with industries ranging from agriculture equipment production and science technology, with easy access to major Midwestern cities and global markets.

Perry’s Rich History and Bright Future

Perry, Iowa was founded in 1869.

It was built and thrived as a railroad town ideally situated in a rich agricultural area. Brothers John and Harvey Willis laid out the original town plat of 220 acres, donating five to the Des Moines Valley Rail Road – which was planning to extend its service to Fort Dodge – for a depot.

The new town was named after Colonel Perry, a railroad official from Keokuk, Iowa. Train service began on July 4, 1869, and eventually the Rock Island and the Milwaukee railroads ran through Perry.

The railroads ceased running through Perry and surrounding towns in 1980, with the last Milwaukee train leaving Perry on March 23 that year.

The former tracks have been converted to biking and walking trails that allow residents and visitors to enjoy well-

maintained paths for miles.

From its humble beginnings, Perry grew into a market center to provide products and services to the surrounding countryside, as well as smaller nearby communities. Being recognized as the ideal location for light and heavy industries, as well as wholesale and retail operations, Perry expanded and prospered.

From a population of 952 people in 1880, it grew to more than 7,000 in 1980. The growth has continued even as population in many rural towns has declined. People living in Perry have access to good jobs at home or choose to commute to the Des Moines metro area for work. Manufacturing and food processing have boosted the local economy, as have the many commercial and professional businesses located here. Great city services and other amenities make

ecoming quite an art scene, Perry is home to two arts organizations – each hosting numerous festivals and programming throughout the year – as well as several art-related businesses and an ever-growing array of public art in the form of sculptures, murals, installations, and permanent collections. The community has truly embraced a renewed identity of being a hub for Arts & Culture.

For more than 45 years, the Perry Fine Arts committee has been sponsoring concerts and other musical shows. Each year, it hosts six to eight events that can include anything from opera to jazz to blue grass. The committee mixes it up with both instrumental music and vocal music performances during the season. The group has recruited musicians from as far away as Europe and Russia, as well as from Iowa and the surrounding states. Tuba Day began in 1977 as a

workshop and concert by a group of tubists in honor of Bill Bell, a famed Perry tuba player from a bygone era.

That event is now A Tuba Christmas and features a rehearsal and public concert. The Perry Fine Arts season begins in the fall and ends with a variety show on the afternoon of July 4. Most concerts are at the Perry Performing Arts Center at the high school, but the tuba performance and variety show are at the First United

Methodist Church in Perry. Both venues are handicapped accessible. All Perry Fine Arts performances are free of charge, thanks to generous sponsors and freewill donations. For more information on the times and dates for all the shows each season, please view the calendar at PerryIAChamber.org.

Art on the Prairie is an organization with a namesake annual festival on the second weekend of November. The event features a

ATTRACTIONS combined 100 Iowa artists, musicians and poets in multiple buildings in the downtown district. Thousands of visitors attend the festival each year, now for nearly 15 years. The organization also coordinates the Art Harvest Tour in September, during which visitors can take a scenic drive through the Des Moines River Valley to explore a dozen artist studios within a 90-mile loop. Local artists open their workspaces for the weekend for a behind-the-scenes peek into where they create. From historic downtown galleries to country lane home studios, the stops are as unique as the artistic styles they host – including three stops right in Perry!

The Boulevard Sculpture Series features four illuminated sculptures

that serve as a gateway to the Downtown Perry Historical and Cultural District, located on Willis Avenue between First and Third streets.

Commissioned by Art on the Prairie, the sculptures tell the story of Perry’s

rich history, while also paying tribute to the Railroad, Agriculture, Industry, and the Arts, which all have contributed to Perry’s growth. Speed Train, created by Jim Russell, sits at the intersection where the railroad once passed through Perry.

Furrowed Fields, also created by Russell, celebrates the land and the farmers who’ve tended it for generations. Born of Fire, created by John Brommel, is a nod to industry’s important role in the economy, while Iowa Girl, also created by Brommel, pays homage to Perry-native Roberta Green

ATTRACTIONS Ahmanson, who was instrumental in the revitalization of the city more than 20 years ago. The sculptures are sites to see, especially at night!

A centerpiece of downtown, the Reconfiguration Arches were created by world-renowned metal sculptor Albert Paley in 2002. The sculptures, weighing nearly eight tons apiece, are constructed using metal objects that were significant in the lives of metalworkers, farmers and railroaders who have made their home here.

The arches frame both entrances of Soumas Court, an outdoor courtyard named after local legend George Soumas, who was the son of Greek immigrants, a World War II hero and former mayor of Perry. A life-size sculpture of him, by Iowa artist Chris Bennett, sits drinking coffee at one of the bistro tables. The courtyard features a Wall of Witnesses filled with plaques commemorating well-

ATTRACTIONS incorporate small-town America and local heritage. The hotel’s architecture, artwork, artifacts and overall attention to detail are breathtaking.

The Carnegie Library Museum is a renovated building that has been meticulously restored to reflect its original 1910 appearance. It houses a collection of materials, including the library’s original 1,000 books, as well as art and exhibits depicting the growth of middle America from the mid-1800s to the present. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Carnegie Library Museum served as Perry’s library for 90 years from 1904 to 1994. Electrical, HVAC,

and ADA compliance led to the construction of the new library.

Hometown Heritage, a local nonprofit organization, partners with the Perry Public Library and the

city to manage the Carnegie Library Museum, as well as cultural assets such as the Wall of Witnesses and collection of artworks at the Hotel Pattee and other city-owned buildings. Hometown

Heritage works to preserve local history, support the arts and celebrate life in small-town Iowa by creating programs and events highlighting Dallas County’s rich history of immigration, exploring themes of education, family, work, faith and loss.

The charitable trust curates a vast collection and archive of stories, photographs, and interviews, and it encourages others to research, preserve and share their stories.

Several murals also add vibrancy to downtown public spaces. Honor, by Shawn Palek, is in Josh Davis Plaza, named for United States Marines Corporal Josh Davis, who lost his life serving in Afghanistan in April 2010. Prairie Lane and Sinclair – Memory Lane are two additional murals by Palek.

ATTRACTIONS The first is located in a pocket park between Perry Perk and Mary Rose Collective. The other is around the corner from an old Sinclair Station turned museum with classic car memorabilia. His latest work in Perry, added in 2023, is a landmark mural at the Raccoon River Valley Trailhead, titled Welcome to Perry.

Located behind City Hall, El Puente/The Bridge, by Jennifer Drinkwater, is inspired by migration stories from Perry’s Latina community and was created with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities as a part of larger project facilitated by the American Library Association, LatinoAmericans: 500 Years of History.

Perry’s newest and tallest mural, Art on the Prairie, was added in 2023. Painted by Des Moines artists Jimmy Navarro and Katie Jensen, it

depicts a prairie landscape, rolling hills and the Raccoon River Valley in a style reminiscent of stained glass. Community members and high school students helped paint some of the 17 panels, each 8 feet tall. They were later installed above Raccoon Valley Bank.

Sculpture, fabric art, stained glass, paintings, artifacts and more are on display throughout those buildings.

ATTRACTIONS Perry’s early development, it’s fitting that some iconic train cars have been put to some modern uses downtown. In 1992, the city accepted ownership of the Milwaukee Rail Road Caboose, which was renovated in 2010 and houses a seasonal food truck.

It is located in Caboose Park at the trailhead of the Raccoon River Valley Trail. Just across the street from it is the Perry Welcome Depot. Besides information on things to see and do, it also has a public restroom as an amenity for trail users.

In 2019, Perry celebrated “Rails to Trails: 150 Years of Growth” and in 2021, the Raccoon River Valley Trail was inducted into the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame. ¡Viva Perry!, the annual Latino Festival sponsored by Hispanics United for Perry (HUP), is a cultural event each August that celebrates Perry’s diverse community. The event highlights traditional dance and music, and includes food vendors, kids’ activities and more at Pattee Park.

The Perry area is a food-lover’s oasis with many options for authentic

ecreational activities abound in Perry from walking and bike trails, fishing and paddling, and

more.

Biking is synonymous with Perry, from annual bike rides to miles of scenic trails waiting to be explored.

The Perry Chamber of Commerce hosts the 24-mile round trip Bike Ride to Rippey (BBR Ride) each February as its largest annual fundraiser. The nearly 50-year-old tradition happens rain, snow or shine and is known as The Original Winter Ride. It starts and ends in Perry, and attracts more than a thousand riders each year.

An in-town trail system, the Hiawatha Trail provides easy access in Perry to the Raccoon River Valley Trail (RRVT), which encompasses

89 miles of paved trails passing through 14 communities in three counties. It is the longest continuous bike trail in the country and was inducted into the Rails-Trail Hall of Fame in 2021.

Perry each year as they explore the trails and enjoy breathtaking views. A must-see attraction is of the trail includes a 13-story-high bridge across the Des Moines River.

For those interested in fishing or floating, boat ramps for the Raccoon River are located at the west end of

Willis Avenue as well as south of P58 (First Avenue), immediately to the east after crossing the Raccoon River bridge. The 7.5mile float to the Snyder Access located in Minburn is great for a trip by canoe, kayak or tube, complete with beautiful

sandbars, eagles, deer and giant cottonwood trees. Just 1/2 mile from the river is a stone amphitheater, restored wetland areas and a re-established prairie nursery at Voas Nature Area just west of Minburn.

ATTRACTIONS and the Grabenhorst Log Cabin at Forest Park Museum, just south of Perry. Its popular exhibits showcase the area’s railroading history, early settlers and more. It also has an arboretum with native trees, shrubs, woodland, reestablished prairie and a butterfly garden. Educational programs and tours are available through Dallas County Conservation which provides a wide range of educational and cultural opportunities and manages more than 3,000 acres and 25 sites throughout the county consisting of parks, museums and wildlife areas, as well as hiking and recreational trails (including water trails).

Whiterock Conservancy, just 30 miles west of Perry has 16 miles of bike-optimized, single-track trails and 12 miles of shared use trails. The 5,500-acre land trust, located along

Perry and more than 200 within 10 miles.

Golfers can enjoy a nine-hole golf course, an outdoor pool and other social events with a membership to the Perry Golf & Country Club. Open golf for non-members within a 30-mile radius is available on Mondays. The Perry High School Driving Range at the athletic complex is another option for people who want to practice their swing.

Parks & Camping

attee Park, located at West 3rd Street and Willis Avenue, is Perry’s largest park.

It features a band shell, skateboard park, three softball and four baseball fields, tennis courts, playground equipment, three shelter houses and the Perry Dog Park. Annual activities include the 4th of July Celebration, Latino Festival, and Friday Fest music events in the summer.

Camping at Pattee Park is limited to five days. The park has electric hookups and a dump station.

Campers must register with the Perry Police Department at 908 Willis Avenue. Call (515) 465-4636 for more information.

The five-acre dog park is next to the baseball and softball diamonds south of Pattee Park. It is fenced and divided into two sections, one for smaller dogs and one for large dogs. The park has a double-gated entrance, a three-level water fountain and dog-inspired playground equipment.

Wiese Park is adjacent to the McCreary Community Center and features a shelter house and gazebo, a nine-hole disc golf course, playground equipment, a lighted two-mile recreational trail, basketball court, soccer fields and sand volleyball courts.

West of the McCreary Community Center on the corner of Bateman and 8th Streets is the Perry Veterans Memorial, dedicated in 1992 by American Legion Post 85, Veterans of Foreign War Post 2060 and private

individuals to the veterans of all wars and conflicts.

Perkins Park is located at West 5th Street and Dewey Avenue and is divided by a berm that was once a raised railroad bed.

On the west side is natural prairie land, interpretive signs and access to the Hiawatha Bike Trail. The east side has youth soccer fields and playground equipment. The newest addition to Perkins is an orchard featuring pawpaw and apple trees.

Restrooms at the city parks are available seasonally.

Other nearby camping options include: Sportsman’s Park, 1/2 mile northeast of Dawson (6 miles west of Perry), a 40-acre park of oak and hickory timber overlooking the North Raccoon River, with a fishing access, nature trails, playground equipment, electric hookups, modern restrooms and cabins.

Whiterock Conservancy, Guthrie County, south of Coon Rapids (30 miles west of Perry), with three campgrounds, primitive camping sites and cabins.

Don Williams Lake and Campground, Boone County, north of Ogden (25 miles north of Perry), with electric hookups and showers.

erry is home to the McCreary Community Building, which sports an updated gym, a fitness center with 24/7 access, studio space, a child watch room and more. The 40-year-old, city-operated building was renovated recently and offers people of all ages access to recreational activities. A splash pad is open in the summer, and people can swim year-round in the six-lane heated indoor pool. Day passes and memberships are available.

The Perry Public Library is more than just books. It enables the community to thrive by offering lifelong opportunities to connect, learn and create. Prominently located on the corner of 1st Avenue and Willis Avenue, the library provides access to free Wi-Fi, more than 46,000 books, magazines and movies, numerous programs and hands-on activities, as well as space to relax. COMMUNITY AMENITIES “The DMACC Perry VanKirk Career Academy offers area high school students the chance to explore various career paths, earn college credit and decrease the cost of a higher education all close to home and at no cost to the student or their family,” said Director Eddie Diaz.

In 2022-23 school year alone, more than 148 Perry High School students were enrolled at the Academy and earned 1,507 DMACC credits, he noted. The average DMACC tuition saved per student was $1,883.75, with a total of $278,795 saved by students.

In addition to offering an affordable education, the Academy also provides students with a staff that cares. From teachers to advisors and beyond, the team places a focus on supporting students, working with them to develop their interests, pursue scholarships and reach their professional goals.

In partnership with area school districts, the Academy offers programs to high school students in such fields as health occupations, welding, teaching, applied engineering and more. The school’s new Computer Languages Academy is one more avenue for students to pursue hightech skills that will lead to high-paying jobs.

Students gain hands-on experience in well-equipped labs and workshops, as well as through clinical hours and internships. They also can take academic classes in writing, math, government, the sciences and other subjects that can transfer to 4-year colleges and universities.

COMMUNITY AMENITIES Perry Community Schools comprise a rural school district covering 154-square miles (including the communities of Dawson and Bouton). Community service is the focus each year during Homecoming Week when students and staff volunteer at various locations in the community on Volunteer Day. An Annual Veterans Day Celebration at the high school includes a presentation, assembly and luncheon. Those are just a couple examples of the civic contributions the school district fosters.

A $6.4 million industrial technology, multi-purpose/wrestling room building project was completed in 2020. Perry High School has the only museum in the United States to display the Constitution/Bill of Rights. It also has 800 photos of Perry History and an exhibit titled “Education through the Ages.”

Upgrades to security systems provide a safe and friendly learning environment. An array of clubs and programs are available to students, including band, chorus, dance team, drama, speech, National Honor Society, Mock Trial, Academic decathlon, a full array of sports, service clubs and more.

Also offered to high school students through concurrent enrollment are 40 college-level classes that provide

the opportunity to earn up to 50 of the 60 credit hours required for an associate degree prior to graduation.

Multiple students have received their associate degree by taking a few more on-line courses through Des Moines Area Community College, whose Perry VanKirk Career Academy is an integral part of their educational opportunities.

Free 4-yearold preschool is offered through a partnership with Perry Community Schools and the Universal Preschool Program. The school prides itself on its small classrooms that offer a family friendly environment where life-long friendships are formed.

Students can participate in reading support, language development programs, and many afterschool extracurricular activities.
