Giving Can Lead to a Healthy Life

A

cts 20:35 is a Bible verse that I first learned as a little boy. In the New King James Version, it is written as, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” although it is frequently abbreviated as “It is better to give than to receive.”

As a child, I am not sure that I entirely agreed with the author.

When I received my first Big Wheel Green Machine at age 4, or my first two-wheeled Huffy bicycle at age 5, or my first Daisy airpowered BB gun at age 8, or my first Matt Kechele-shaped surfboard at age 12, I was certain that the “receiving” part of the equation was the better half. However, when the nuns at my Catholic elementary school told me that the words came from Jesus Christ himself, I went along with it, assuming that I would eventually learn their perspective.

As an adult, with a wife and three children of my own and a nearly 30-year career in philanthropy, I get it now. The joy I receive from surprising my wife or children with a gift is priceless.

So are the feelings of happiness that come after donating to a local charity, or while volunteer-

ing to help an important cause I believe in. Beyond these feelings, according to Dr. Susan AlbersBowling of Cleveland Clinic, giving is actually good for your health, too.

“As you help someone or give a gift,” she writes, “your brain secretes ‘feel good’ chemicals like serotonin (which regulates your mood), dopamine (which gives you a sense of pleasure), and oxytocin (which creates a sense of connection with others). The health benefits that can result include lower blood pressure, less stress, and a longer lifespan.”

panish speakers say “dar.”

In Italy it’s “dare.” The French say “donner,” while the Germans say “geben.” In Kinyarwanda, the primary language spoken in Rwanda, the verb “to give” is “tanga.” However we say it, most humans love to give, whether it’s a million dollars or a kind word.

Here at Vero Beach Magazine, we delight in talking about all of the giving that goes on in our wonderful community; in fact, we even devote an entire publication each year to the subject. It’s called Time & Treasure: A Guide to Better Giving.

In these pages, you’ll learn about scores of Indian River County nonprofits and their missions, events, and volunteer opportunities.

You’ll see some concrete examples of people coming together in special ways for the benefit of the entire community. Every day I am truly amazed with the residents of Vero Beach, Sebastian, and Fellsmere and their passion for lending a helping hand. We’re

proud to recognize these acts of kindness.

In our features, you will read about the Jimmy Graves Sports and Community Complex project finally coming to fruition, providing a local recreational hub while honoring a young man who lost his life in a 2016 boating accident.

You will also see the compassion and selflessness of the staff and the village of volunteers who have kept the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County in the business of helping animals for 70 years.

Finally, you will learn about Youth Guidance and the spirit of giving that can make a decisive difference in a child’s life. Our senior writer, Ann Taylor, brings the mentoring academy’s redesign of its 62-year-old home—our former public library—to life.

Way to GROW! Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy celebrates its past by building a brighter future

This is one of those feel-good stories— it’s about a nonprofit called Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy that 50 years ago began helping youngsters with limited resources become successful academically by pairing them with adult mentors. It didn’t take long before the time they spent

together went beyond textbooks to learning life lessons.

While Youth Guidance programs have evolved over the years, the one constant has been the bond formed between mentor and mentee. The difference a caring adult can make in the life of a youth can be momentous.

Vanessa Velasquez can testify to that.

Raised by a single mom, the now-29-yearold was in first grade when she was introduced to Youth Guidance. “I remember meeting Miss Rita (Dion, YG founder) and my mentor Amy (Holm) and being able to go to summer camps at Saint Edward’s and Harbor Branch, places I would never have experienced if it weren’t for the program.”

“When I was in high school I volunteered to be a mentor, and I still keep in touch with Amy,” Velasquez adds. “In fact, she and her family are coming to see me in a few weeks.” A Vero Beach High School alumna, Velasquez went on to graduate from Mississippi State University. Recently she was appointed as a White House Fellow and placed to work with the secretary of the Navy.

Velasquez is just one of the many success stories to come out of Youth Guidance, which inhabits a 62-year-old building across from city hall. Once home to the Indian River County Main Library, the building was later converted to county administrative offices; thus, the interior

had become a maze of hallways and cookie-cutter cubicles. Getting from point A to point B was tricky. That’s why, early this year, Youth Guidance launched a $1.5 million capital campaign with the goal of creating a state-of-the-art facility that will better serve today’s programming needs.

Plans call for a commercial kitchen and dining room, a multipurpose room with dividing walls, a workshop for in-house

vocational training, a technology center, a library and tutoring wing, and an outdoor terrace and garden.

Executive Director Phil Barnes couldn’t be more excited. “We’re going to completely gut the interior and start from scratch. The commercial kitchen will allow us to expand our cooking program and add culinary arts training. We’re also planning to use the vegetables and fruit we grow in 2024 TIM E & TRE A SU RE

our garden for some of the recipes.”

“Also,” Barnes adds, “as part of a carpentry project within our pre-apprenticeship program, students will build benches, flower boxes, and compost bins for the garden.

A lot of projects we have planned support one another, and with the new layout we’ll be able to increase the number of youth we serve from 50 to 75 each day.”

That’s impressive and a far cry from the numbers when Barnes arrived. It was March 2020 and COVID-19 had just shut everything down. Instead of scaling back services, Youth Guidance began delivering food and care packages filled with games, books, and hygiene products to students’ homes.

Innovation was the name of the keepconnected game.

When schools moved to virtual instruction, the nonprofit offered an all-day program that included meals, personal tutoring, and assistance with schoolwork.

Fifty students who would have been left home alone or unsupervised benefited.

Today, in addition to academics, programs are designed to teach students life and vocational skills that help them develop positive relationships and secure meaningful, in-demand jobs.

As Barnes points out, “Our goal has always been to work collaboratively with other organizations, particularly in the youth development sector. We took a hard look at what is offered in the community and identified several gaps we are now filling, particularly within life skills and vocational training.

“The manufacturing and trade sector is growing, offering many well-paying jobs.

However, there’s a shortage of skilled workers. We linked up with partners in the community to launch innovative programs, including bicycle repair with Bike

Walk Indian River County, culinary arts at Community Church, farming at C-B Farms. There’s a boat mechanic program in partnership with Youth Sailing Foundation, and a state-certified pre-apprenticeship program for ages 16 to 24 that teaches fundamental knowledge for HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, electric, and welding jobs,” says Barnes, with a note of justifiable pride.

So, as walls come down and dust flies inside the building at 1028 20th Place, the future looks brighter than ever. As Youth Guidance board member Wilfred Hart remarked recently, “When we’re able to develop our youth’s mindset, character, love for giving back to the community, and building their intelligence, it gives me a sense of pride knowing that we as an organization are going in the right direction.” ◆

A Legacy of Love For 70 years, the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County has answered the call of animals in need

Kate Meghji has just returned from one of her many demanding duties. “I was just playing with some boxer puppies,” she laughs. “I volunteered for that.” Three plump puppies arrived at the shelter at the tender age of 6 weeks with their mother after being relinquished by a heartbroken owner who could not afford their upkeep.

Meghji is wrapping up a four-year stint 16

as CEO of the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County, which is marking its 70th anniversary this year.

“Many animal shelters like ours were founded in the 1940s and ’50s,” she says. It was then that well-meaning people banded together to house loose animals to protect public health and safety. If they didn’t get adopted, they were euthanized. “It has

really been only in the last 30 or 40 years that adoption was promoted, and in the last 15 years or so when we initiated robust research into why animals end up in shelters in the first place.”

In 1953, Peggy Kuster visited the old Vero Beach city dog pound to adopt a pet but was discouraged by the condition of both the premises and the dogs, many of

which were infested with ticks. She put her outrage to good use and established the Animal Protection Society, rolling up her sleeves in the kennel and raising funds, included her own, for a new location on Commerce Avenue that didn’t have a leaky roof and rusty pipes. The name was changed to the Humane Society of Vero Beach in 1969. As the city and county grew, the shelter went through another expansion before building the state-of-the-art campus on 35 acres next to the Indian River County Fairgrounds, where the nonprofit resides today.

Susan Schuyler Smith is the current president of the board of directors. She credits the addition of the dedicated medical clinic on-site for saving more pets’ lives. “In the past, we would have to hunt around for a veterinarian to spay or neuter pets that had been adopted, while the new owners waited,” she says. “Now all of our pets are spayed and neutered, so they can go home right away. We can also treat them for upper respiratory viruses and heartworm, which previously would render these pets unadoptable.”

So successful are these efforts that the Humane Society is classified as “no-kill,” boasting a 93 percent save rate.

The Humane Society depends on its skilled staff and welcomes dedicated volunteers. Just last year, 56,000 volunteer hours were logged. Volunteer Kay Keyser has been lavishing attention on the dogs for seven years. “The staff does a wonderful job with walks and training, but when they have other demands on their time, volunteers can help out,” says Keyser. “If

Some like to have the zoomies in a play yard or chase a ball, and others are a little timid and just want to be cuddled. Depending on what circumstances led them here, they may not have had a real bond with a caring person.

The challenges facing animal shelters around the country are many. Homeowners associations that make the ill-advised decision to implement weight limits put a damper on adopting any dog larger than a loaf of bread. In Florida, shelters like

the Humane Society have lots of large, friendly, energetic dogs. These dogs are having longer stays, often months at a time, as they await the right person to take them home.

Both cats and dogs can develop stress associated with increased time at the shelter, and that stress is a factor for staff, too. Flexible, short-term fostering opportunities are available, including day trips, overnights, or weekends for people who want to help these pets. This is a nice way to give dogs or cats a break and assess their behavior in a home environment.

All the progressive changes made at the Humane Society are creating better outcomes for pets and their owners. Adoptions are up, averaging nearly 150 per month in 2023. One thing that does not change is the level of caring bestowed on the animals.

Whether manifested in the form of taking in lost pets, rescuing injured wildlife, or helping in the community with food and veterinary services, the mission has been the same since 1953: Save more lives. As the shelter adds new initiatives, the campus will become more of a destination for education and family events. “We want to be a resource for the community,” says Meghji. “Helping animals is our goal, but we need to help people as well.” ◆

Home Field Advantage The Jimmy Graves Sports and Community Complex project exemplifies the power of collaboration

It’s finally happening. The vision Joe Graves had to create a youth sports complex in memory of his 15-year-old son, Jimmy, who died in a 2016 boating accident, is becoming a reality.

Graves, a local attorney and former city councilman, purchased the 11.6 acres on 16th Street across from Vero Beach High School six years ago, but lack of funding led him to donate the land to the School 20

District of Indian River County with the understanding that what was built there would bear his son’s name.

Not only did SDIRC agree, the $7 million Jimmy Graves Sports and Community Complex, which features a regulation-size track and lacrosse/soccer field, student entrepreneurial center and innovation lab, all-inclusive playground, state-ofthe-art amphitheater, community park,

and historic walking trail, is taking shape thanks to an outpouring of public and private support.

Cindy Emerson, director of instructional innovation for SDIRC, goes back to early 2021 and a conversation she had with Superintendent of Schools David Moore.

“Before the project was officially launched, Dr. Moore asked me to see what kind of resources there were out in the community.

athletes whose family members hadn’t been able to see them compete and win. It was heartbreaking. Now that heartbreak can turn into heartwarming moments for everyone.”

Financial support for the complex Moore has called “the heartbeat of the community,” includes the Education Foundation of Indian River County, which contributed $1 million and, in collaboration with SDIRC, is committed to raising additional funds.

“We met with most of the city council members, got their support, and when we did a feasibility study we found the space was where so many people had gathered with their families; there was a nostalgic feeling. We reached out to the Richardsons, who stepped up immediately by contributing $300,000.”

It’s no surprise. Sisters Sandy Kahle, Nancy Luther, and Susan Hopkins learned at an early age the importance of giving back from parents Dan and Marge Richardson. Generosity is in their DNA. “In the 1960s, our parents were part of an effort to redo the current stadium, so this exciting project is a way for us to continue their legacy. We see that the seeds planted by them long ago and continuing through us are coming to fruition in wonderful ways,” says Sandy.

Even though Susan no longer lives in Vero Beach, the deep affection she has for her hometown lives on, so when Sandy told her about the project, she jumped right in.

So did Nancy, who notes, “My sisters and I are all Vero Beach High School graduates, as are several of our children and grandchildren. Many of them played soccer and lacrosse, so we know firsthand the benefits the new track and field will bring.”

SENIOR RESOURCE ASSOCIATION MELANIE Meals on Wheels volunteer Melanie Hedges knows that her deliveries to homebound seniors mean even more than just a meal. She brings hope and health, and she may even save a life.

Melanie became concerned when one of her regular clients didn’t answer the door. Peering in and calling his name, she heard his weak cry, “Please come in. Help me.” She found the man on his kitchen floor, disoriented, dehydrated, and immobile. He had lain there overnight, helpless and afraid, hoping help would come.

Melanie called 911 and stayed with the stricken man, offering comfort and calming words. When the ambulance arrived, Melanie helped provide crucial details to the paramedics and informed SRA of the situation. After they left for the hospital, she locked his house and resumed her meal deliveries.

The gentleman returned home after two 24

weeks, now with vital additional home health and safety services in place through SRA. His voice cracks with emotion as he says, “I trust Melanie with my life.” He wonders aloud whether he would have survived that harrowing experience on the floor without her.

“I wouldn’t know what to do if they didn’t bring these meals every day. I wouldn’t have anything to eat,” he adds.

As for Melanie, she’s just grateful she can help shine some light into the fragile lives of seniors in need. “Meals on Wheels truly is a lifeline for the seniors we serve,” she says.

Success Stories CROSSOVER MISSION AJ Just 11 years old when his father co-founded Crossover Mission, AJ was among the first youngsters to test the effectiveness of the nonprofit’s use of year-round basketball training and academic mentoring to produce responsible, successful adults. If AJ’s outcome is any indication, Crossover has hit on a brilliant formula.

Having turned his own life around in adulthood, AJ’s dad knew the importance of providing strong role models for at-risk children from an early age. Thus, Crossover works with youth aged 8 to 22, beginning to emphasize college and career readiness in eighth grade.

Now 20, AJ has already realized his dream of playing college basketball, and he has become the first person in his family to attend college and graduate with a degree. “It was hard work both on and off the court, but I was committed,” he says of his time at Northland Community College in Minnesota. The discipline he learned at Crossover Mission no doubt served him well as he arose early in the morning and ventured out into 20-degree weather to attend practices.

Now AJ has an associate degree in business administration, and his future looks like a slam dunk.

WOMEN’S REFUGE OF VERO BEACH DEBRA In the aftermath of a severe case of COVID-19, Debra developed alarming mental health symptoms, including terror and anxiety. Unable to work or function normally, she had moments in which she was, in her words, “borderline suicidal.” Even crying out to God brought little comfort, as her faith seemed to be waning.

She describes the beginning of her turnaround: “Thanks to a wonderful doctor and the correct meds, I was slowly recovering from the mental illness. And thanks to the Women’s Refuge, I not only regained but reignited my faith.”

By taking both a medical and spiritual approach to her crisis, Debra was able to get back onto her feet. She is fully recovered, she has secured a job she loves, and, after having been widowed four years ago, she now has a new gentleman in her life.

Debra is extremely grateful to the Women’s Refuge for helping her find healing. “May God bless them a hundredfold for the blessing they are to others,” she says.

MUSIC ANGELS EDUCATION FUND KAPPRIANAH

Fourteen-year-old Kapprianah “Kappi” Anderson has loved singing for as far back as she can remember but had no formal training until last year, when her grandmother Sandra contacted Linda Sposato, founder of Music Angels Education Fund, for some guidance on furthering the young teen’s vocal studies.

Music Angels, which assists talented, committed children in need of funding to pursue formal lessons, provided a scholarship

and matched the Indian River Charter High School student with vocal teacher Julia Glunt.

Recognizing Kappi’s vocal range, Glunt began working to develop her natural abilities, but without pushing her too hard, since a child’s voice is not fully developed at 13. Nevertheless, their progress has been impressive.

In March of this year, Kappi performed at Music Angels’ fundraiser at the Majestic 11

theater, accompanied by a quintet from New York. In April, she sang the national anthem at the opening of the 12th annual Wheels & Keels Car and Boat Show held at The Moorings.

Recently, Kapprianah landed a lead role in a play at the Vero Beach Theatre Guild, an achievement she feels is due in large part to the strides she has made through her vocal lessons, made possible by the Music Angels Education Fund.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY Even before moving to Vero Beach, we were frequent visitors to McKee, and my husband’s grandfather was a big supporter of McKee Jungle Gardens in the 1950s.

One of the reasons we choose to be members is the accessability of the pathways and the features in the Children’s Garden for our son who has disabilities. The pathways are easy to navigate, and Jackson LOVES the waterfalls that create a sensory calming environment for him. Even more exciting for us is the ability for Jackson to be wheeled to the top of the pirate ship and to play in the waterlily fountain and karst splash garden.

It may not seem like a big deal to others, but for our family, the Children’s Garden makes a huge difference in our lives!

Success Stories THE LEARNING ALLIANCE DEB The Learning Alliance (TLA) has seen firsthand the impact that coaching can have on teacher practice.

Deb was working as school cafeteria manager when, during a national teacher shortage, she decided to make the jump from the cafeteria to the classroom.

Becoming a teacher is challenging, and at the time Deb had no formal teaching experience or knowledge of the “science of reading.”

Fortunately, at Vero Beach Elementary she had the benefit of TLA-funded coaches she could rely upon.

With access to this effective resource, Deb managed to guide her students to stunning results: During the 2022-23 school year, the class soared from just 18 percent of the children reading on grade level to a whopping 70 percent.

“With the tools to be a better educator, I was able to thrive and support my students right out of the gate,” says Deb. “Even in times of struggle, the team is there to support students and close learning gaps with students through intervention, enabling them to gain their reading confidence.”

HOPE FOR FAMILIES CENTER MICHELLE With three children in tow and pregnant with her fourth, Michelle arrived at the Hope for Families Center, having shown tremendous courage and resilience by breaking away from an abusive and dangerous relationship. Not allowing her fears about an uncertain future to dim her spirits, she welcomed her new son with love and a commitment to build a better future for herself and her children.

The Hope for Families program prepares residents to establish and maintain a stable home environment, and Michelle followed it wholeheartedly. She found a job she enjoys, and she placed her two youngest children in daycare. Her two older children continued with their high school education and also secured after-school jobs.

Michelle has received several accolades from her employer and has been promoted. Her determination allowed her to build up some savings and move out of HFC; she and her children now live in their own home.

They communicate regularly with their HFC case managers, and Michelle is passing along to her children the lessons she has learned about financial sustainability.

Michelle’s story is truly one of triumph over adversity.

VERO BEACH OPER A ELEOMAR Talented young baritone Eleomar Cuello won the $10,000 first prize in Vero Beach Opera’s 2023 Rising Stars Vocal Competition. He went on to triumph at the district, regional, and semifinal levels of the Metropolitan Opera’s Laffont Competition, landing him on stage at the Met in New York City for the finals, where he took home another $10,000.

As a result, Eleomar was invited to join the Met’s Lindemann Young Artists Program; he will perform in two operas, Carmen and La Rondine, in 2024. Both will be shown in movie theaters around the world via the Met’s “Live in HD” simulcasts.

Born in Cuba, Eleomar received his opera training in Havana before moving on to study with the Chilean National Opera in 2015. In 2020, he made his operatic debut in Spain.

He has performed in two VBO productions, La Boheme in 2022 and L’elisir D’amore in 2023, as well as its “Best of Broadway and Opera” concert. Eleomar is set to return to the Vero Beach Opera January 7, 2024 as its Don Giovanni, a role he recently sang in Stuttgart, Germany.

Now 28, Eleomar has been on an amazing journey, being able to leave Cuba and end up on stage at the Met, and Vero Beach Opera is thrilled to be a part of it. This rising star anticipates a bright future.

Success Stories INDIAN RIVER LAND TRUST OYSTER BAR MARSH There are all sorts of “success stories.”

Many highlight the accomplishments wrought by a single individual with the help of one or more nonprofit organizations, often improving the lives of several family members. In this case, many players were involved over a 10-year period, culminating in an achievement that benefits the local environment and the broader community.

The long process began with conservation-oriented land acquisitions by Indian River County and was completed recently with the purchase of the final necessary parcels by the Indian River Land Trust. The result is Oyster Bar Marsh, the Land Trust’s first public trail on the barrier island.

The parking area at the trailhead, located on the west side of Highway A1A just over half a mile north of the St. Lucie County line, is beautifully landscaped with native plants. The trail itself provides a 3-mile round trip that can be enjoyed on foot or by bicycle. It includes interpretive signage and a scenic lagoon overlook.

With each new protected property comes new opportunities for public access, environmental education, habitat restoration, and a chance to preserve our scenic waterways.

INDIAN RIVER HABITAT FOR HUMANIT Y TIFFANY Desperate to flee an untenable domestic situation, Tiffany took her two daughters and entered the Hope for Families Center, where they could start taking steps toward a more stable future. Tiffany recognized the importance of leaning on her community for support when necessary. “I’m not ashamed or embarrassed to say I live in a shelter,” she said at the time. “It means I got out.”

Tiffany obtained a job as assistant grocery manager at the United Against Poverty center, where she enjoys meeting and mentoring shoppers with situations similar to hers. She is also gratified by the familial bond she has developed with her colleagues.

It was Tiffany’s work with UP that led her to learn about the nonprofit’s active partnership with Indian River Habitat for 30

Humanity. This encounter has allowed Tiffany to build foundations in more ways than one: She has developed relationships with fellow homebuyers and taken concrete steps toward achieving security and stability for herself and her children.

This past summer, Tiffany and her daughters closed on their dream home. “I’ve never realized the number of people I have in my corner, the number of people who want me to succeed,” Tiffany reflects. “People care that I make it.”

HIBISCUS CHILDREN’S CENTER OLIVIA* “I’m here to tell you that Hibiscus is an angel in the darkness for many neglected and abused children,” says Olivia, a former resident of Hibiscus Village.

Youngsters aged 12 to 17 arrive at Hibiscus having been removed from their homes by the state due to abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment.

“They understood how badly I had been hurt before they took me in,” Olivia explains. They helped her learn to get along better with her peers and to cope with anger and stress. “Most

importantly,” she adds, “I learned that the way I was treated before I went to Hibiscus was not how any child should be treated.”

Olivia speaks highly of the caring staff and mental health team she encountered, and she is optimistic about what can be accomplished with the right kind of care: “With the help of Hibiscus and loving foster parents, I like to think that a lot of wrongs that happen can be righted.”

Currently working toward a degree in business, Olivia hopes to marry, have a family, and own a small business one day. She is

also eager to become a foster parent herself. “I can change that child’s life and show her how she is supposed to be treated and loved for the special child she is.” *Name changed for privacy

Success Stories VNA MOBILE HEALTH CLINIC LILY Septuagenarian Lily was suffering from a painful infection but could not find a medical clinic with any openings. To her relief, someone told her that the VNA’s Mobile Health Clinic, which spends weekdays at various locations throughout Indian River County, happened to be parked at a local shopping center. She tried her luck there and was not disappointed; the nurses confirmed her diagnosis with the necessary tests and prescribed medication to remedy the situation.

“Everyone was so nice,” Lily says. “And it only cost $10! The VNA was patient with me. They listened to me. I just can’t thank them enough.”

Stories like Lily’s are typical of patients’ experiences with the Mobile Health Clinic, which is funded by the VNA & Hospice Foundation. In collaboration with the Indian River Hospital District, the Mobile Health Clinic brings affordable health care to members of the community who are uninsured or underinsured. Its APRNs (advanced practice registered nurses) can examine and diagnose patients and prescribe medication and other treatments for acute illnesses and infections.

THE SOURCE TAMMY Tammy first encountered The Source 14 years ago while seeking help with addiction. She and her longtime partner, Pablo, later moved to Baltimore, where Tammy had family. There, she achieved both sobriety and employment.

After a series of health issues, Tammy fell on hard times and, recalling that life in Florida had been more affordable and had offered a strong support system, she decided to return to Vero Beach. Initially, she and Pablo found housing, but threats to her sobriety led the couple into homelessness.

Learning about The Source’s expanded services, Tammy and Pablo visited the campus and found nightly shelter on the Dignity Bus; access to shower and laundry facilities; food; and a caring community. Tammy cleaned the campus on a volunteer basis as a way of giving back.

Tammy enrolled in the Dignity Bus training program and obtained American Hotel and Lodging Association certification in guest room attendant services.

Now employed by The Source to clean and sanitize the Dignity Bus, Tammy enjoys helping others on the journey of sobriety, and she and Pablo have settled into a small apartment.

JAMIE “When I found out I was pregnant, I felt like a failure,” says Jamie. But she soon realized she did not need to feel that way. “Care Net was open with welcoming arms. They didn’t judge me.

They listened to my story.”

Care Net offers an array of services to women facing unplanned pregnancies, including counseling on available options, ultrasound exams, educational opportunities, and material support. “What made me keep my baby,” Jamie says, “was just looking at the ultrasound and learning it’s a real person in there.”

Support does not end when the baby is born; it continues for three years. Parenting classes address many issues, empowering single moms, helping couples, and coaching dads.

Clients participating in Care Net’s programs have access to the Baby Boutique, which is stocked with much-needed items such as cribs, strollers, baby clothes, diapers, and wipes.

“The more I did videos and classes, I got ‘baby bucks,’ Jamie explains. “I went to the Baby Boutique to get baby clothes and whatever I needed. There was a [national] formula shortage and I did the breastfeeding class.”
