KEEPING IT LOCAL

March is one of my favorite months in Naples. Besides ideal weather, our “season” is still in full swing, with plenty of hustle and bustle still to be had within our great city. It’s a perfect time to celebrate Neapolitans, and that’s just what this issue sets out to do.

Our cover story features Courtney Hansen, who moved to Naples from Minnesota when she was just 11 years old. This driven, beautiful blonde has made bold moves to secure an impressive career in the entertainment industry. While she’s hosted well-known automotive television series, including Overhaulin’, Powerblock/Power Nation, Rides: Biggest Spenders, and several others, more recently, she’s shifted gears, expanding her work to include executive producing. Her latest enterprise—Ride of Your Life with Courtney Hansen, a reality docuseries—has received rave reviews and is one of MotorTrend’s top shows in prime time. Read more about Hansen’s career, her role as a devoted wife and mother, and how she likes to spend her days in Naples, starting on page 108.

Thankfully, our community brims with philanthropic organizations providing a range of services to those in need across Southwest Florida. One of the most noteworthy is the world-renowned Naples Winter Wine Festival, which was held just last month. The wine fest has raised more than $200 million since its inception in 2001. Most often, people buzz about the incredible vintners and chefs in town or the fabulous auction lots available. However, none of the grandeur would be possible without the help of some extremely committed local businesses, a handful of which we highlight beginning on page 130. Learn how some of your favorite local companies and establishments have stepped up to assist—time and time again.

In this issue, we’re thrilled to highlight a local junior tennis prodigy, Calvin Baierl. At just 15 years old, he is making his mark by smashing the competition. Baierl is guided by his coach, Nestor Nuñez, and supported by his parents, Susan and Lee. He’s ranked as the No. 1 player in Florida at present and has ambitions to turn pro before the age of 18. Commencing on page 126, read about Baierl’s exciting life in tennis, including his participation in international tournaments. He’s a force.

As a Naples-based magazine, we take great pride in covering remarkable individuals who live in our community, of which there is never a short supply. However, this issue in particular is dedicated to highlighting local businesses and people who are making a difference or who are setting themselves apart through their talents and contributions.

Here’s to loving our locals!

THE INSIDE TRACK TO NEAPOLITAN LIVING

GUEST OF HONOR

Known for her timeless aesthetic, layered interiors, Southern warmth, and keen eye, designer Charlotte Moss will address attendees at this year’s signature fundraising event for The League Club—Naples Tables: “Fun Fabulous Festive!”—taking place March 7-8 at The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón.

This tablescaping spectacular showcases lavish, creative designs from interior designers, boutique shop owners, florists, party planners, and other imaginative individuals and businesses from Southwest Florida and beyond. The funds raised allow The League Club, founded in 1986, to continue its mission of strengthening the community through grants to nonprofit organizations that address food scarcity, health care, education, the arts, and emergency shelter.

With more than 37 years in the design industry, Moss lectures internationally and is an author. For tips on how to create a dinner table that’s memorable and enjoyable, turn the page and read an excerpt from one of her 11 books: Charlotte Moss Entertains (leagueclub.org) –Gaylene Salomons

Charlotte Moss Brings Beauty to the Dinner Table

As a designer and someone who believes that we should make every effort to make our surroundings as beautiful as possible, I find that with minimal effort we can bring beauty to the dinner table. It does not matter what you decide to use in setting your table; the key is to make the time and do it neatly and thoughtfully. Time spent at the table should be pleasant, making us look forward to the next meal and the chance to spend time together. The dining table is the single piece of furniture in the house where we gather together not just for nourishment but also for conversation and companionship, a place where we gather to celebrate special occasions and to continue family traditions.

NINA ISER JEWISH CULTURAL CENTER

With more than 10,000 individuals making up the Greater Naples Jewish community, there was a growing need for a central place to connect. The Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center, a 20,000-square-foot building outfitted with conference rooms, offices, flexible seating, and a caterer’s kitchen, officially opened earlier this year on the Temple Shalom campus. The center will serve young children, families, and seniors with educational, social, leisure, recreational, and philanthropic programs.

Architect James Knafo and Wegman Design Group, both of Naples, created a warm and inviting space that focuses on meaningful symbolism. The large community room opens to a courtyard where a nine-branched candelabrum sculpture by artist David Hess of Baltimore, Maryland, is mounted to an outside wall. Meaningful abstract art throughout the year, the Chanukiah will be lit for community

Hanukkah celebrations. Anne Schuchman donated the sculpture in honor of her late husband, Larry Schuchman, who passed while the cultural center was being planned and funds were being raised.

“I wanted to donate something to remember him,” remarks Anne, who says Larry was instrumental in organizing Hanukkah celebrations in their home community of Mediterra every year. “In 2023, the center will host its first community-wide Hanukkah celebration,” adds Anne.

Various mezuzahs containing small parchments inscribed with scriptures are affixed to the center’s doorways, marking it as a holy place. To symbolize

the Western Wall, Jerusalem marble was featured in several places; there is even an abstract Star of David in the massive ceiling of the community room. Soaring royal palm trees lining the entrance to the center represent the 12 tribes of Israel.

It took “five years of planning and dreaming,” explains Jeffrey D. Feld, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. Feld notes that the center was made possible through the support of both donors and the community and says that local organizations will be able to use the building to celebrate their Jewish heritage while solidifying a sense of cultural pride through ongoing activities. Naples Pier Masterpiece

There is perhaps no other landmark in Naples as iconic as the Naples Pier.

Initially constructed in 1889 to service a newly built hotel, the original Naples Pier spanned 600 feet and was used primarily for loading and unloading passengers and freight. Over the years hurricanes ravaged the pier in 1910, 1926, 1935, and 1940; a cigarette fire in 1922 also took it down. Repeated damage meant stricter building standards over the years. In 1960, Hurricane Donna decimated the pier and the hotel. The hotel never reopened, but the pier did.

Hurricane Ian brought the latest destruction in the fall of 2022. In response, Emillions Art, a Naples gallery, announced a community-wide art-driven fundraiser to celebrate the strength and resilience of Naples following Hurricane Ian. The gallery will partner with photo-mosaic artist Robin Austin to create an iconographic masterpiece of the treasured landmark.

Austin, a respected English artist, known for his photographic mosaic artwork, will create the final piece of artwork from more than an anticipated 2,000 photo submissions that will ultimately form the mosaic tiles.

Only 100 limited edition prints will be produced; 80 will be sold, and 20 percent of the proceeds will both help support families of first responders following difficult times and benefit City of Naples community restoration projects. Another 18 of the prints will be auctioned off with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward the same causes. The remaining two commemorative works will be donated and presented to the City of Naples and the Naples Fire Station No. 1 for display at their respective downtown sites.

Those wishing to participate in this project can submit a photo for consideration, purchase a limited-edition print when available, or simply make a contribution. (emillionspierproject.org.) —G.S.

You were born in Colombia and raised between Miami and London. How has your worldly upbringing influenced your designs?

Aquazzura is a combination of all the cultures, cities, and experiences that have made my life. Everything I see and everywhere I travel affect my design and nurtures my soul. Diana Vreeland used to say, “The eye has to travel,” and I couldn’t agree more. Aquazzura is an Italian brand with a Latin soul that keeps evolving.

What does the name Aquazzura mean to you?

The name Aquazzura comes from the words “acqua” and “azzurra,” which means blue water in Italian. I’ve always been in love with the sea and the sun and wanted the name of my brand to both evoke my love for Italy and to remind me of Capri and all the sunny places by the water that I used to escape to during the winter. It is a name that expresses freedom and new dolce vita style.

You’re introducing new shoe styles for Spring/Summer 2023. What was the inspiration for the collection?

Edgardo Osorio

The founder and creative director of Aquazzura reveals the origins of his global perspective

doing unexpected combinations like raffia with crystals, to give natural materials a luxe touch. Also, I wanted to introduce new heel shapes, creating … the Twist heel in gold-plated metal that is designed to elegantly steal the show. The heel was inspired by ’70s furniture, whose lines I find sensual and elegant.

Tell us about the new handbag collection debuting this spring. After 10 years of creating shoes, it felt like the right time to branch out into handbags. I wanted the design of the bags to be recognizable and powerful enough that no logo is needed. The day bags are versatile, meant to be worn from day to night, and defined by a timeless elegance. Materials are carefully selected for their premium quality, flexibility, and elegance—from buttery napa to raffia, from laminated leathers to luxurious exotic croco prints and satin. The color palette enhances the personality of the collection, with bright, glossy hues of emerald green, Ibiza blue, and sunflower yellow jewel alongside timeless black, camel, and white, and dégradé sunset shades with a gilded metallic sheen.

You’ve partnered with luxury brands across all spectrums of design. If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and what would you create?

looked at wonderful pictures [by]

Patrick Demarchelier of island life.

For the Resort and the Spring/ Summer 2023 collections I was inspired by Caribbean living. I looked at wonderful pictures [by] Slim Aarons, Richard Avedon, and Patrick Demarchelier of island life.

From the Bahamas to St. Barths, I love the colors of the tropics and the relaxed lifestyle. I love

I love collaborations as they are a way to learn and create new, unexpected things and brainstorm with other creative people. There are so many that I would love to do that it’s hard to choose one. In fashion, I think it would be great to collaborate with Chanel to create sexy shoes, but in the Chanel spirit. In art, I would have loved to work with Claude Lalanne. I love his sculptures and find them elegant, modern, and timeless.

Born and raised in Naples, Nina Van Arsdale graduated from Naples High School in 1996 and left home to study fine art at Flagler College in St. Augustine. After earning her degree, Van Arsdale moved to New York City to work for Cynthia Rowley, an American fashion designer who created the quirky yet fun eponymous global lifestyle brand.

After working in New York for a short while and following a visit to Los Angeles, Van Arsdale decided she wanted to move to the West

Coast; an opportunity to run the Cynthia Rowley store in L.A. made for an easy transition.

Often surrounded by other young creatives in both her work and free time, Van Arsdale met the founder of a nascent brand of crueltyfree cosmetics—Smashbox. Intrigued by the brand, she decided she wanted to work with them; although the company did not have a position for her, nor a salary, Van Arsdale agreed to help out free of charge. After a successful launch, Van Arsdale eventually be -

came the head of public relations for the company and was instrumental in organizing and producing worldwide events for many years.

One of her more memorable opportunities with Smashbox was when she ordered a vintage white Cadillac convertible—on eBay—to be used in a cross-country brand awareness campaign. The car was decorated in bright lips and made stops in cities throughout the United States, promoting a red lipstick launch.

On a Christmas visit home in pre-pandemic times, Van Arsdale conversed with her former stepmom, Karen Van Arsdale, about her future. Karen, a longtime Naples resident and real estate agent, invited Nina to work with her and move back to Naples. Nina mulled over the option presented by Karen, ultimately declining. “It’s not easy to make a career change in your 40s,” she says. Plus, she and her then husband had a young daughter, Lennox, to consider.

In early 2020, the rapid advancement of the coronavirus forced changes within the Smashbox company. After a few months

trying to adjust to staffing shifts, Nina decided she was ready to “come home.” The cross-country move was orchestrated from California, and Nina fortunately found a home, then under construction, in The Landings neighborhood, nestled in a golf course community in the heart of Naples and within walking distance to Gordon River Greenway Park and Baker Park.

Although she had to make many design decisions from afar, Nina was able to create a comfortable home for Lennox, herself, and their two dogs—Remi and Arlo. Just over 3,000 square feet in size, the contemporary home offers single-level living with high ceilings. Crisp white walls and cabinets provide a fitting canvas for Nina’s eclectic and colorful collection of art and memorabilia, which includes a painting of her grandmother and great aunt that was secreted away in a closet for years, a prized Andy Warhol polaroid, and a large photo of Jane Fonda, taken by celebrity photographer and founder of Smashbox—Davis Factor. Other notable works of art include photography by Julie Blackmon, whose

style Nina describes as “tongue-in-cheek Norman Rockwell”; paintings by Donald Robertson, whom Nina collaborated with on projects at Smashbox; and vibrant, playful works by Chicago-based artist Kristi Kohut.

Although she says she misses L.A. terribly, Nina is now focused on spending her time creating special moments and memories for her and her daughter.

When asked where they most enjoy hanging out in their home, Nina chuckles and admits “the bathroom is a bit of a sanctuary for us both—where we are disconnected from devices. It gives us quality time to catch up and laugh with one another.” Although she loves the lively wallpaper in her guest bathroom, the primary bath is a favorite room.

While the bath water draws, Lennox likes to perch on a porcelain elephant stool that Nina remembers sitting on at her grandmother’s house when she was young. Bath time is spent discussing their respective

days. From this same beloved bathroom, Lennox, who is already showing an affinity for makeup artistry, often practices on her mom’s face in front of a large mirror.

Another popular room is the den, where an emerald-green velveteen sofa provides

the perfect spot for mother and daughter to read favorite story books together.

Ultimately, wherever they are, Nina says: “The time that I have with her is so important. I try to make sure that our moments together are meaningful.” «

Backyard Indulgences

POSH POOLS MAKE THE PERFECT SPLASH

Humans have been dipping, splashing, and soaking in assorted sized and shaped bowls of water since the beginning of time. One of the world’s earliest known was built in the Indus Valley in the lost city of Mohenjo-daro. Excavated in the early twentieth century, the large pool, constructed of baked brick, was found in present-day Pakistan and dates from 3300 BC to 1300 BC. The public reservoir was most likely used for religious functions, such as purification and renewal, according to worldatlas.com. Fast forward some 5,000 years, and we see that most pools are now used for recreational purposes. In Southwest Florida, they are ubiquitous in backyards.

If you are building an in-ground pool or updating an existing one, there are numerous enhancements to explore before diving into your project—from unique tile options to infinity edges and sun shelves. Choose laminar jets—perfectly arched rods of water, often in varying colors, to delight the eye; place fire features in strategic locales, in the form of tables or pots, to set a dramatic scene; or incorporate scuppers to bring water from one section of the pool to another, adding variety (and sound effects) to the overall design. And don’t forget the bubbles—in fountain form of course.

What else makes a pool extraordinary? Hear from a mix of local interior designers, builders, and architects who share their aquatic creations and the elements that make them unique.

The dominant attribute of this home in the Estuary at Grey Oaks is the fabulous golf course and estuary view as seen from the open and inviting outdoor living area complete with a spectacular pool. From Beasley & Henley Interior Design, this saltwater stunner includes a sun deck, perfect for young children and pets, with in-water lounge chairs. FAMILYFRIENDLY DESIGN

This family-centric pool attached to a home in the Mediterra community is uniquely different. Scott Windham, principal landscape architect and owner at Windham Studio, and builder Harwick Homes proposed this family-inspired pool for their clients. A saltwater pool 4 feet in depth surrounds a circular island; teak decking, chosen for comfort and durability, provides the seating. Colorful cushions add pizzazz. The custom inset firepit is illuminated in the evening by rope lighting along the perimeter of the seat.

“With four married daughters, five grandchildren, and more in the foreseeable future, this

which provides a constant trickling noise. Lights within the pool change color depending on the mood or celebration, while ample seating surrounds this turquoise paradise.

“Most of my clients want the same thing … to have a relaxing respite from their busy lives and enjoy the time they can with friends and family in a stylish and comfortable setting,” notes Troy Beasley, principal designer for the design firm. (beasleyandhenley.com)

GROUND WELL-COVERED

The Lykos Group

This large, luxurious resort-style pool on a generously sized lot next to a canal on Marco Island, built by The Lykos Group, is what today’s buyers are seeking. Enhancements include a sun shelf, bubblers in the pool, shell stone coping, glass tile, and an oversize spa. The edge of the infinity pool frames the home’s outdoor living area; synthetic turf outlines the pool. A popular item in new homes, the simulated grass has several practical benefits. It remains cool, is less slippery than natural grass, is a deterrent to insects, and is low maintenance.

“The buyers have grandchildren and a dog, so they increased the amount of artificial turf,” explains Brittney Mendez, interior designer at The Lykos Group. “We have a lot of requests for it. In the right place, it highlights the area.” (lykosgroup.com)

MHK Architecture & Planning

Creating his own pool—aided by Custom Pools of Naples, as well as Phil McHenry, project manager, and Christian Andrea, principal, of Architectural Land Design—was very special for Matthew Kragh, president at MHK Architecture & Planning.

An artistic masterpiece, almost the entire saltwater pool is surrounded by an infinity edge, conveying the illusion that Naples Bay flows into the back of his family home. The very shallow backyard area—initially a negative—created an opportunity to include a fire feature and seating area at the dock level, which is deftly hidden behind the pool’s waterline.

“Once the sun starts to set, the pool area behind our house is pure magic. Words cannot describe the beauty and serenity with the vibrant colors, lighting, fire features, Ipe wood deck, and of course, a perfect backdrop,” shares Kragh. (mhkarchitecture.com)

CAPTIVATING CONTOURS

Wright Interior Group

Situated on Naples Bay in Port Royal, this intriguing, well-curved infinity-edge pool fills the backyard, creating a private oasis. Glass mosaic tile covers all 2,700 square feet of the saltwater pool that snakes around and contrasts the very linear, measured edges of the corresponding home. Shell stone decking seamlessly matches the all-white pool coping. Palm trees nestled into built-in planters at the pool’s edge add greenery and color.

“With three lounging areas—one with a 10-foot movable umbrella available when the sun gets too hot— lava rock fire features, a sunken spa, and a floating stepping-stone walkway, we achieved the resort feeling the client wanted from the start,” says Nan Wright, principal and CEO of Wright Interior Group. Diamond Custom Homes

Across the street from the Gulf of Mexico backing up to the Intracoastal Waterway in Bonita Springs, this Hickory Beach home built by Diamond Custom Homes features a pool with a striking waterfall feature. The home’s main living area is on the second level; the first is home to a garage and a storage space. The pool was elevated to the second floor allowing the homeowners to walk directly from their living space into the pool area. Water cascades off an infinity edge, producing a soothing waterfall. The water hugs a 14-foot, blue-tiled wall and then collects in a hidden trough on ground level where it is then recycled back to the pool.

“You don’t often see a pool on the second floor,” says Michael Diamond, president of Diamond Custom Homes. “It is a bit of an engineering feat and speaks to the quality of the home.” (diamondcustomhomesfl.com)

WE SPOTLIGHT THREE WAYS TO TRANSFORM AN UNINSPIRED ACCENT WALL INTO A CONVERSATION STARTER

A WALL MURAL

Murals create an instant focal point in a space. While wallpaper continues to trend, murals present an opportunity to go bigger and bolder. They can depict everything from florals and botanicals to landscapes and exotic environs, meaning they’re an easy and elegant way to bring the outdoors in. In contrast to traditional wallpaper, which offers a seamlessly repeating print, wall murals contain scenes in panels. Adhesion methods, finishes, and sizes vary, so be sure to do your research to ensure you select the best option for your desired result. Naples-based Daisy Bennett Designs, the brainchild of wallpaper designer Jaima Emmert, boasts a gorgeous collection of wallpaper murals. A GREEN WALL

While people’s affinity for biophilic design (which centers around incorporating natural elements into indoor spaces) started well before COVID-19, the quarantine and post-pandemic fallout spurred an uptick in its popularity. A prime example of this is green walls. Once reserved for hotel lobbies and luxe shopping plazas, green walls are now popping up in home interiors. The Naples-based team at Bee Art creates unique living walls, moss walls, and artificial green walls for indoor and outdoor spaces. While faux designs are the best option for those who lack a green thumb, moss walls are also attractive as they don’t require any watering or sunlight. In addition to having inherent acoustic properties, moss walls are versatile and can be accented with wood or stone to add texture. (beeartgreenwall.com)

3D WALL PANELS

The idea of 3D wall panels is new to many. Essentially, it involves covering a wall with a decorative material that has three-dimensional surface patterns. These panes create instant dimension and texture in a more minimalistic way. Materials range from wood, metal, and glass to plant fibers and plastic, and aesthetics run the gamut from traditional to contemporary. Depending on your choice of material, many can be primed and painted in just about any hue. Originally from Poland, the husband-and-wife team of Mariusz and Justyna Dejcz bring a European artisan craftsman perspective to Luxe Surface Design Studio, the company they established in Naples in 2016. They work with designers and architects to determine the ideal material and color for a particular space, with the goal of creating an eye-catching final product. (luxesurfacedesignstudio.com)

INTO THE OUTSIDE

EMBRACING OUTDOOR LIVING

FUNCTIONAL AND BEAUTIFUL FURNITURE MAKES IT EFFORTLESS

In Southwest Florida, where the lanai is another large room in your home and a pool is considered a necessity, it’s easy to embrace outdoor living. The furniture provides the props for such a casual lifestyle. Subject to salty, humid air and high temperatures on a regular basis, however, furnishings need to be durable and resistant to the negative effects of moisture. If not sturdy enough to stand their ground in storms accompanied by high winds, they should be light enough to be moved quickly and easily. Perhaps most important, whether at a vacation home or primary residence, the furniture should be beautiful and comfortably fit the design and decor of the home.

Pate Rauluk, a buyer for Clive Daniel Home in Naples, comments that today there is “a huge influence from indoor furniture in outdoor furniture.” He notes that sofas and chairs are now routinely upholstered and dining sets are doubling as outdoor furniture. “Teak is becoming more and more of a focus in the outdoor space,” says Rauluk. As far as color, he says: “We are still seeing lots of blues and whites.”

More than 25 years ago, Ann Sutherland started a quest for the ultimate outdoor fabric and launched Perennials fabrics and rugs. Today her luxury performance textiles are fade- and moldresistant, durable, soft, and available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. She also owns an outdoor furniture company with husband David Sutherland. Their fur-

niture and fabrics are available locally at thePerennials Sutherland Studio in the Naples Design District.

Teak is a pillar of Sutherland furniture because of its durability and beauty. Carbon fi ber is an option of late, as is stainless steel. Oceana is one of their outdoor furniture lines combining teak with stainless-steel accents—materials often found side by side on boat decks. Their Arlette dining table combines solid teak legs with a thin-edge marble top.

Also available at Sutherland is a new line of vegan leathers that is perfect for the Naples market. Launched late last year and inspired by the leather upholstery found on yachts, the line, called Hi ’n Dri, is crafted with 100-percent polycarbonate polyurethane. The antimicrobial material features the buttery feel of natural leather, but it maintains color and texture after prolonged use. It also resists damage caused by water, sunlight, and bleach cleaners.

With more and more clients seeking sophisticated and elevated designs for their outdoor spaces, designers will certainly be on the lookout for bespoke pieces, including unique colors, textures, and prints found in fabrics that meet this request. As Rauluk points out, when buying for the Clive Daniel store, his main concern is uniqueness. As these designs demonstrate, it is not necessary to sacrifice functionality when you still want to realize great design in your outdoor spaces. (clivedaniel.com; sutherlandfurniture.com) «

FANTASY DESERT

MORE THAN DREAMY INSTAGRAM FODDER, AMANGIRI IS THE PINNACLE OF ULTRA-LUXURY IN THE HEART OF THE AMERICAN WEST

It’s no secret that social media has fostered an alternate reality enhanced through stateof-the-art filters, artistic apps, and savvy influencers crafting aspirational content. Nothing is spared from excessive revision nowadays, including travel destinations and resorts. Yet among the virtual noise, it’s still possible to discover raw beauty in its purest form, something that equally wows on screen and off.

Such is the case at Amangiri, a remote retreat that’s set Instagram ablaze as a veritable architectural dreamscape ensconced among the red-rock bluffs, high-rising mesas, and striking canyons of the Utah-Arizona border. Using the 165-million-year-old Colorado Plateau—a weathered land painted by geology—as a blank canvas, Amangiri designers created an extraordinary space for appreciating the magic of the American West while becoming a part of it. At the same

time, the property delivers on all the ultra-luxe hallmarks synonymous with Aman Resorts—exclusivity, privacy, serenity, and excellence in gastronomy, wellness, and service—culminat

ing in quite possibly the top resort in the United States and a spot every bit worth the online hype.

After snaking through the desolate desert roads of northern Arizona to reach Canyon Point, Utah, a mirage of Amangiri begins to take shape. At clos

er approach, it’s clear this is no optical

illusion: A 34-suite modernist resort is at once delicately etched into the sandstone itself and thoughtfully strewn across vast acreage.

At Amangiri’s core lies a sprawling living and dining space, dotted with crackling fireplaces, edged by double-story windows, and linked to a heated swimming pool hewn into the rugged terrain. With its one-ofa-kind design, the pool surfaces as a peninsula framed by umbrella-capped daybeds on one side, chaise lounges and towering raw earth on the others. A series of suites can be found past both ends of the main pavilion, accessible through open-air concrete corridors embellished with almond trees, hydrotherapy features that mimic the erosion process, and seating nooks for taking in the ethereal scene. Each outward-facing suite is a study in understated elegance, where clean lines cross over natural timbers, white stone floors, and oversize glass panes, channeling attention to the desert panoramas that surround. A private outdoor

lounge and fireplace heightens the red rock immersion.

Amenities and programming capitalize on Amangiri’s location within the Navajo nation. The Aman Spa offers therapies rooted in the Navajo concept of hózhó , a state of being in tune with oneself and in balance with the world. Each evening, local artisan gifts are placed bedside, from dream catchers to handcrafted oakmoss and sage candles. Daily cultural encounters on-site may include Navajo storytelling, Native American hoop dancing, and dream catcher workshops, while seasonal menus at Amangiri Restaurant feature selections inspired by traditional dishes from the regional Native American communities. A recent Spirit of the Journey tasting menu included a Navajo blue corn fry bread popover, a mesquitesmoked duck salad, and a chili-rubbed crusted elk loin, complementing the greater menu’s pan-Asian and Southwestern fare.

Another highlight of Amangiri’s tribal association is exclusive access to select picturesque slot canyons within northern Arizona. Thanks to Peter Lik’s mind-blowing screensaver photos, the voluptuous and striated Antelope Canyon is now a bucket-list destination. But inch over to Rattlesnake Canyon and Owl Canyon and it’s possible to revel in the red rock glory without the crowds.

These neighboring labyrinths are reserved for Aman guests only, translating to deep thoughts, endless photo shoots, and ambles at your leisure. Back on property, other activities speak to Amangiri’s extra-special experiences. A Via Ferrata course—one of just a handful in the United States— means scaling mountainsides via cables and ladder rungs and crossing mountaintops over suspension bridges under the tutelage of a skilled mountain guru. A hot-air balloon ride provides a bird’seye view of the undulating, multihued desert backdrops, while horseback rides and designated foot trails offer closer looks on firm ground.

trusive or dizzying. This extends to the guides, waitstaff, and an entire team dedicated to making your visit one for the books. The off-the-charts eclectic cuisine is bundled into the rate, meaning there’s no reason to head elsewhere for meals. And given the experiential nature of the activities and unparalleled location of the property, there’s every reason to leave the outside world behind and venture off-site only for guided encounters. Spend a few days at Amangiri, and it’s hard to believe the concept was envisioned and executed in a time

before social media. The backdrops are some of America’s finest, the architecture skews modern minimalist, and the experience is exactly what desert dreams—and top Instagram content—are made of. The pictures, videos, and curated content may dominate social media, but that doesn’t mean Amangiri is a contrived online fantasy. Rather, it’s a singular resort that has the goods and excellence to back up its high profile and deliver an American West adventure filled with defining moments in real time and in real life. With the recent completion of its new waterpark, Grande Lakes Orlando puts all that (and then some) in one resort destination.

The 500-acre Grande Lakes encompasses The Ritz-Carlton Orlando and JW Marriott Orlando, as well as golf, tennis, a 40,000-squarefoot spa, multiple pools with decked-out cabanas, and a dozen dining venues, including the Michelin-starred Knife & Spoon. But the

biggest attraction is the new Grande Lakes Waterpark with six zones of fun. Here you’ll find not only a water slide, but an entire slide tower with three slides ranging from mellow to rocketfast. Splash Cove offers activities in and out of the water, including the PlayVenture playground with climbing structures and lawn games. LIGHTNING BOLT

THE CROATIAN-MADE RIMAC NEVERA ALL-ELECTRIC HYPERCAR IS A FORCE LIKE NO OTHER

There’s a moment in pretty much every Star Trek episode when Captain Kirk calls on his trusty helmsman, Lieutenant Sulu, to engage warp speed. Then, in the blink of an eye, streaks of incandescent light tunnel ahead and there’s a surge of unrelenting forward momentum.

This is precisely the same sensation you get from standing on the accelerator of an

all-electric Rimac Nevera and feeling the insane 1,914-horsepower thrust. Only, add to it the mild discomfort of your eyeballs being squeezed back into their sockets and your internal organs compressing against your ribcage.

If you could get your fearless passenger to activate the stopwatch feature on your iPhone, you’d see that zero to 60 mph is 1.85 seconds. That’s quicker than a Formula One racecar. Keep your right foot planted and you’ll pass the 100-mph mark in 4.3 seconds. If you are feeling really brave, you’ll keep going until the speedo is showing 258 mph, the official top speed of this Croatian-built cruise missile, making it the world’s fastest production electric hypercar. At this point you must be thinking that this is some weird, one-off, thinly disguised racecar. Not so. Walk into your neighborhood Rimac showroom—there’s one in Naples and another in West Palm Beach—

write a check for roughly $2,450,000, and you could be experiencing the kind of adrenaline rush normally reserved for riders of Daytona Beach’s Vomatron. But don’t dally: Rimac is building just 150 Neveras with more than a third already sold.

Rimac is the creation of Croatian visionary Mate Rimac. From humble beginnings, the 35-year-old now supplies electric propulsion know-how to the likes of Aston Martin, Jaguar, Koenigsegg, Pininfarina, and Porsche, which owns 24 percent of the company. The millennial engineer is so cash-rich that last year he bought Bugatti from the Volkswagen Group.

The flagship of his fast-evolving brand is this astonishing Nevera electric hypercar, which I spent an equally astonishing morning piloting around West Palm. If you were driving along State Road 710 a few weeks back and saw a flash of white soaring by at hugely illegal speeds, that was me. Apologies.

For the Nevera, Rimac has designed, developed, and engineered everything in-house at

102 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED JOURNEYS

his campus on the outskirts of Zagreb, Croatia. That includes the I-beam-stiff carbon-fiber monococque body structure, 120-kWh battery pack, quartet of electric motors, and mind-numbingly complex software that runs it all.

Despite its amazing performance and technical wonderment, the Nevera was always intended to be an “everyday” hypercar you could drive to work or take to dinner—not that you’d want to hand the keys to the kid working the valet.

Pop the switch to open the high-lifting butterfly doors with their cutouts in the roof and then lower yourself into the hip-hugging bucket seat. The cabin is more functional than fancy, with acres of black carbon fiber everywhere. Instrumentation is minimal too, with the touch screen on the center console looking like something out of a Best Buy open-box sale. Three big rotary dials navigate the major controls, including the multitude of drive modes, gear selections,

MYSTIC POWERBOATS’ SUPER-LUXE M5200 IS A 2,400-HORSEPOWER ROCKET SHIP

There’s fast and then there’s Mystic fast. The new Mystic M5200 waterborne cruise missile can top out at 80 mph, which results in roughly the same kind of watery eyes as peeling a dozen onions.

This exhilarating, heart-palpitating performance comes courtesy of the latest speed demon from DeLand, Florida–based Mystic Powerboats, a needle-nosed, 52-foot center console with a quartet of 600-horsepower Mercury Verado V12s hanging off the transom. If you’re counting, that’s 2,400 horseys in total.

This is Mystic’s biggest center console to date, and it joins the go-very-fast boatbuilder’s smaller M4200 and M3800 models. While the M5200 is built for speed, it’s also built for comfort. There’s more diamond-quilted, contrast-

stitch upholstery than in a Bentley Continental, as well as seating for 27, a cozy cabin for weekend jaunts, and more cupholders than in a Dodge Caravan. Yes, it makes for a great fishcatcher, but who’d want all that blood and guts messing up the faux-teak flooring?

Best seat—make that seats—in the house? That would be on the forward deck, where you’ll find three stretch-out loungers with armrests, headrests, footrests, and bolstered sides. A surprising omission? Seatbelts. At 80 mph across the Gulf Stream, you might need them.

Then there are all the seating options on the back deck, like the four rear-facing loungers and the four forward-facing seats on the other side. Throw in the three individual race-style pews behind the helm, along with two rows of

four seats behind those, and it’s about as much seating as you’ll find at an AMC multiplex.

While there’s no shortage of supersized, highhorsepower center consoles on the market— from HCB to Valhalla to Pursuit—what sets the Mystic apart is its very cool design. I love the wraparound windshield, and the swept-back, carbon-fiber hardtop seems to house more speakers than at an AC/DC concert.

The wave-piercing hull of the M5200 is an evolution of the proven M4200’s, featuring a foam core with infused epoxy and carbonfiber reinforcements. There are bank vaults less impenetrable. And powering the hull are four magical Verado V12 outboards, which, according to Mystic, can punch the 52 on to the plane from just 17 knots, helped by the Mercs’ two-

speed transmissions. If you’re so inclined, you could opt for Mercury 450R power, in combos of either four, five, or six. But with the V12s being so technically advanced and smoother than hot molasses, why would you?

Time to drop the hook and let the party begin. The aft cockpit can be spec’d with a grill, fridge, icemaker, and separate pullout cooler, while the entire rear deck can be shaded by a retractable awning. And if the only rock and roll you want is on the disco-grade stereo, there’s a Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilizer on the options list to stop the rock and roll at anchor.

While the cabin isn’t exactly generous in size for a 52-footer with a 14-foot beam, it’s plenty big enough for overnights and weekends. There’s the usual forward V-berth that converts into a double, plus a small rear cabin under the cockpit for a couple of kids. The cabin’s best feature may be its spacious head with a separate, full-headroom shower and a glass bowl sink. And at the touch of a button, you can activate the kind of air-conditioning

that would give polar bears the shivers.

After taking a walk-through of the M5200 at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, where it was making its global debut, I found the boat’s most impressive asset to be its peerless quality. The glass-fiber gel coat, the panel fit and finish, and the stitching on the upholstery are all remarkable—which they should be for Mystic’s $2.7 million nicely loaded asking price. But to be fair, you simply cannot put a price on pulling up to your favorite waterside eatery in this supercar of the seas. «

ou won’t find this bold yet sagacious aphorism buried within a novel or hiding out in a motivational reference book. This quip is from Courtney Hansen, an established Neapolitan who believes in seizing the day. Actually, strike that. Hansen believes in seizing every minute. She likes to go fast.

A Barron Collier High School and Florida State University graduate, she is an automotive aficionado, as well as the lead character and executive producer of Ride of Your Life with Courtney Hansen, a reality docuseries produced for Discovery networks that airs on MotorTrend and MotorTrend+.

This quick-moving show spotlights a female boss (Hansen), who leads ROYL Garage, the backdrop for elaborate and dramatic custom-car makeovers. Once the cars are revamped, they are eventually presented—at no cost—to deserving individuals and families across the nation in surprising, heartwarming reveals. Hansen, who is the first female executive producer in television history to create and produce a series of this type, is assisted by an all-male staff and is in fact the owner of ROYL (Ride of Your Life) Garage.

“Creating this show and bringing the concept to life has been a dream of mine for years,” she relates. “I love the idea of reuniting people with the same year, make, and model of a dream car or truck they once owned but had to part ways with due to difficult times.”

Hansen is used to living life with the hammer down in the left lane. However, Ride of Your Life was filmed amid the dregs of the COVID-19 pandemic, mak-

ing production of the series particularly arduous and demanding due to shutdowns, product shortages, uncertainty of sponsor backing, and other concerns. At one point, Hansen herself was hospitalized after contracting COVID.

Scott Messick, executive producer/ showrunner for Ride of Your Life, notes the many responsibilities Hansen had throughout the show’s creation: “Courtney wore many hats, from concept creation to hiring the talent to scheduling to handling countless other logistics required for the show’s production.”

“It was nearly impossible—a very bumpy road,” Hansen explains. “To see it come across the finish line is truly astounding. It’s extremely gratifying that this show was executed, is one of MotorTrend’s top shows in prime time, looks amazing, and is resonating with viewers.”

Hansen also appreciates the compassionate and charitable slant of the show.

“I love seeing our team carry out the designs; I love the reveals and the energy and emotion of witnessing people receive their dream cars. It’s beautiful, magical, and sometimes even surreal.”

“While you’re standing in your own way, please get the heck out of mine.”

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS

While Hansen, who is married to well-known Neapolitan Jay Hartington, CEO and owner of Marissa Collections, has lived in Naples since age 11, she spent her early childhood years living on Lake Minnetonka, located west of Minneapolis, Minnesota. That she loves all things automotive should come as no surprise. Her family owned Brainerd International Raceway, and growing up, she and her siblings spent time there, as well as other racetracks spanning the Midwest.

“My father [Jerry Hansen] was a Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) racer; he won 27 SCCA championships and is the winningest driver in history,” says Hansen. “The racetrack was my playground, and my siblings and I all have a love for cars. Gas runs through our veins; it’s in our blood.”

Though they owned a condo in Naples already, in the late 1980s, Hansen’s family decided to trade the brutal Minnesota winters for the balmy climate and sunny shores of Florida. Throughout her childhood and adolescence, she intermittently worked as a model and did television commercials locally, even becoming a local car dealership’s spokesperson, appearing in 22 of their commercials.

“My mom and dad were actually anti-modeling,” she explains. “When I was growing up, I would take jobs here and there, however. I made my own money, and I liked that.”

After graduating from Florida State with a degree in marketing, Hansen returned to Naples before teaming up with Wilhelmena modeling agency and working in both the Miami and Chicago markets. Eventually, she moved to Los Angeles, California, after landing a role in a pilot called Killer Golf

“I sold everything, including my car, and moved out there with two

suitcases 21 years ago,” Hansen says. If her move to L.A. was a risk, it’s one that’s yielded huge dividends. Her big break came when she locked down a role on Overhaulin’, a reality automotive series that aired on TLC; Hansen appeared on the show for 24 episodes in 2004 and 2005.

“One day, my agent called me and asked, ‘Do you really know cars?’” I replied, “Of course, I do!”

Even with all her empirical knowledge, Hansen immersed herself for three straight days in auto science reference books and materials, once again putting the pedal to the metal to achieve her dream.

“I studied and studied and studied,” she expounds. “It paid off; I blew them away.”

As Hansen’s fast-paced career continued, she didn’t stop impressing; she continued to secure noteworthy roles on other shows. For 10 years, she starred as the host of Powerblock/ Power Nation, another popular automobile series. She also hosted Destination Wild, an adventure series highlighting fabulous vacation spots; Million Dollar Motors; Rides: Biggest Spenders; Total Outdoorsman Challenge; and others.

Hansen has appeared on several magazine covers, too, including Women’s Health, Hot Rod, and FHM She was offered the cover of Playboy—more than once—but turned it down because she didn’t want to model without clothing (she did do a lingerie shoot for Playboy). She also worked as a columnist for FHM and other publications and penned a book for a female audience of new car enthusiasts called The Garage Girl’s Guide to Everything You Need to Know about Your Car, which provides car-care tips and need-to-know information for keeping vehicles in optimal working form.

112 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
“If you produce your own shows, you can’t get fired, right?”

MAKING A RIGHT TURN

Just as smart and savvy as she is beautiful, Hansen one day had what she terms “an epiphany” about her career in the entertainment industry.

“I realized that—at some point—I was going to be let go for someone who was half my age and who required a fraction of my pay

rate. I didn’t want to be stuck, didn’t want to plateau, and didn’t want to find myself in an unfavorable situation.”

That’s when Hansen took a leap of faith. She decided to start creating her own content and producing her own shows, realizing that ultimately she would have the final say about the talent.

“If you produce your own shows, you can’t get fired, right?” she asks rhetorically. The move from host to producer was a solid one for Hansen. In addition to Ride of Your Life, she’s produced The Ride That Got Away for Amazon Prime, the History channel, and FYI Network through her company, High Road Productions. Through this same

NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2023 113

company, she plans to continue creating shows, including a second season of Ride of Your Life. But Hansen has other things in the works, too, including producing commercials and different content locally. And, because she owns it, she mentions there’s a blueprint for opening a ROYL Garage right here in Naples that will work as a daily operating business repairing, customizing, and restoring vehicles.

JOYRIDING

With all systems go regarding her career, Hansen will tell you her greatest accomplishments do not take place in front of the camera. For her, it’s being a wife and mother. She and husband, Hartington, have a daughter, Holland (8), who is highly athletic. There’s a fourth to this busy family as well: a Maltese Yorkie named Violet.

While they have a home in New York City,

too, the Hansen-Hartington fam splits most of their time between their Los Angeles and Naples residences, spending summers in L.A., a location that Hansen says could not be more distinct from Naples.

“The terrain is different, the climates are different, the beaches are different, the vibe is different,” she says. “Unlike when we’re in Naples, we don’t socialize on a huge level there. Unless I am doing red carpet events, most of my time is spent enjoying quality time with my family and friends. It’s more low-key.”

Back in Naples, Hansen and Hartington stay busy with myriad philanthropic endeavors. Among other involvement, Hartington serves on the board of directors for the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens and chairs the zoo’s $25 million capital campaign. The Naples Zoo is near and dear to Hansen’s heart, too, as is YouthHaven, a Naples-based charity that provides safe spaces and therapy programs for children and teens; she is involved as a committee member for this organization. Hansen also supports Smile Chain and Operation Smile, two organizations benefiting children with cleft lips and cleft palates.

Besides philanthropic work and events, Hansen—who will pull over on the side of the road to witness a beautiful sunset—says much of her free time in Naples is spent with her family at the beach.

“We love the beach, and we love to hang out with friends, fish off the dock, go boating, and plan pool days,” she adds. “Much of our time is spent watching Holland partake in soccer and other athletic activities, too. We’re always kicking or throwing a ball around the house.”

How does she balance it all?

“I just dive in and do it,” Hansen explains. “Full throttle is the only gear I know, and I thrive on the juggling act. I would probably get bored if I slowed down, and I don’t want to miss out on the excitement of life. I believe in being the best wife and mother I can be, and I will probably work until the day I die. It’s always a bit of a struggle to balance it all, but ultimately—and thankfully—we are firing on all cylinders.” «

SET TO WIN

How many teens are willing to get out of bed at 5:30 every morning and sign off at 9 p.m.? If you want to be a professional tennis player before age 18, you do. “Now it’s easy,” admits 15-year-old Calvin Baierl, about sticking to a rigorous training and tournament schedule five and a half days a week. In the world of junior tennis, the unassuming, slender teen with a shock of wavy red hair is currently the No. 1 tennis recruit in the nation and has maintained that spot four years in a row, according to tennisrecruiting.net.

ON THE GO, FROM THE START

Calvin was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Lee and Susan Baierl. An active child, he played hockey and basketball in Pittsburgh. One summer, while the family was spending time at their vacation home in the north Naples

A NAPLES TENNIS PLAYER IS FOCUSED ON GOING PRO BEFORE AGE 18

golf and tennis community of Mediterra, Susan enrolled Calvin in tennis lessons to occupy his time. Calvin so enjoyed his experience with Mediterra’s tennis pro, Nestor Nuñez, that he did not want to return home to Pittsburgh for the basketball camp he was signed up for.

During those first lessons, Nuñez noticed Calvin’s enthusiasm for the sport: “He was the first kid to bounce back after a break.” And, as Nuñez recalls, Calvin’s efficiency and speed were already obvious. At only 8 years of age, Calvin won his first tennis tournament—in the 10 and under category at Cambier Park.

Back in Pennsylvania, Calvin began training with Krishnan Anandan, former coach of professional American tennis player Danielle Collins. Eventually, Calvin’s interest and passion for tennis necessitated a full-time move to Southwest Florida for the Baierl family. Anandan saw something special in Calvin

126 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2023 127

and persuaded Lee and Susan to enroll their then 11-year-old son to train full time with renowned coach Rene Gomez at the Naplesbased Gomez Tennis Academy.

At the academy Calvin learned the proper technique, mechanics, and mindset of a tennis player. During that time, under the United States Tennis Association (USTA) ranking

system, Calvin earned the No. 1 position in the nation (in the boys 12-year-old category) and was ranked the No. 1 player in Florida for three years in a row. After three years at the academy, where he also attended school, Calvin decided he wanted a more private, individualized approach to the sport, and he returned to Nestor Nuñez, owner and founder of the Ultra Tennis Academy in Naples, to be his full-time coach.

When asked if she noticed anything particularly significant or remarkable about her son’s athletic ability, Susan remembers that Calvin had amazing dexterity at a very young age. She also says he rolled over at only 3 weeks of age. “He could not sit still and was into anything to do with sports.” Athleticism is prevalent in the family genes. Lee was an all-American football player and played on the University of Pittsburgh football team when they won a national championship; Calvin’s great grandfather was a referee at college bowl games, and

one of Calvin’s maternal uncles was a topdrafted major league baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

COMMITTED TO WINNING

Calvin is committed to following a strict schedule in pursuit of his goal. After an early morning breakfast, he heads to a two-hour private lesson on the courts at Naples Grande with Nuñez. An hour-long private fitness class follows. Calvin grabs a quick lunch at home, and then, it’s back to the courts for another couple of hours to practice what he learned in the morning lesson in match play. Some days he plays on the hard courts at the Community School of Naples, others it’s on a private court in Livingston Woods. “The choice is dictated by what type of court the next tournament will be played on,” explains Nuñez.

Calvin heads back home to attend to lessons of the scholastic variety. He is enrolled as a freshman at ICL Academy, an online private school that tailors academics to students’ passions. “He packs his schedule with honors classes and maintains a 3.7 GPA,” says Susan, “and he speaks two languages.”

Once a week Calvin gets a sports massage

Junior tennis phenom Calvin Baierl (center) with his parents, Lee and Susan Baierl, in Naples. Calvin (right) oncourt with his longtime coach, Nestor Nuñez

to help keep his muscles relaxed, and once or twice a week, depending on his health, a physical therapy session helps keep his body in alignment. “He has suffered many injuries,” says Susan, “most of which he’ll deal with for the rest of his life.” Training is intense and takes a toll on young bodies. Calvin is learning to play through the lingering pain of past injuries. Before his 9 p.m. bedtime, Calvin enjoys dinner and some relaxation time.

A typical teen, Calvin’s constant companion is his phone. Most of his friends, whom he met playing tennis when younger, no longer play. He doesn’t play video games. Does he watch tennis on television? “Not really,” he says, “just the grand slams and slow-motions tapes of the major players.” Is there a tennis player he admires? “Novak Djokovic.” Having won sponsorships from every major tennis brand, Calvin chooses to wear Adidas from head to toe; his racket of choice is the Clash by Wilson.

Under Nuñez’s guidance, Calvin has maintained his No. 1 ranking in Florida. Last year, he started traveling outside the United States for tournaments, even though his parents were hesitant given he was only 14. At a tournament in Bogotà, Columbia, he competed against players aged 18 and under from around the world. He won that tournament, training with an oxygen mask before arriving to deal with the high altitude. In the first three weeks of 2022 in South America, Calvin played in three semifinals doubles matches, three finals matches, and secured two championship titles.

Many more victories followed that year, culminating in a championship final match in Kalamazoo, Michigan, that earned Calvin a wildcard from the USTA into the U.S. Open Junior Grand Slam. An audience member at the U.S. Open in 2019, Calvin thought it was a tournament he might one day get the chance to play but did not think it would happen for him so soon.

FAMILY MATTERS

“There was never a time that Calvin wasn’t ahead of the competition,” says Susan. Calvin’s most loyal fans are his family. “We call them groupies,” Susan explains. “They are often the largest group of fans at a competition.” His two brothers and two sisters, grandpar-

ents, and aunts and uncles rarely miss an opportunity to travel wherever he is playing.

Do his parents watch him play? They do, although they do not typically attend international tournaments. “I burn lots of calories,” says Susan, about watching Calvin play. “My adrenaline goes way up.” Calvin does not like it if his parents clap or make comments. “We are only allowed to be pure spectators.” When asked if she likes tennis, his mom comments: “Calvin is my life. Whatever he does, I do. If he’s in tennis, I’m in tennis.” And although not superfluous with his words, Calvin is obviously grateful for the opportunity he has been given, often

thanking God in his social media posts.

Calvin continues to dream big and works hard every day to break through to higher levels. His goal this year is to make the list of the top 100 junior ranked players in the world, allowing him to participate in all four of the junior grand slam events. To get on this elite list, he and his coach will spend approximately 20 weeks on the road, playing tournaments with other world-ranked juniors in Costa Rica, Columbia, Peru, and Brazil. With his discipline and drive and an extremely supportive family, Calvin is set to achieve this goal.

When asked if he loves his life Calvin nods and answers quietly: “I do—a lot.” «

The goal of making the list of the top 100 junior ranked players in the world this year is one of the things that keeps Calvin motivated.

Topping Off CHARITY

Held since 2001 and taking place last month, the Naples Winter Wine Festival (NWWF) is one of the most successful charity auctions in the world, supporting more than 50 nonprofits in Collier County through the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF). Alongside a team of dedicated employees, trustees, and volunteers, several local businesses have made long-standing contributions to the multiday wine extravaganza.

Party Favors

Behind every successful festival is a fabulous handbag. Since 2014, patrons of the event have carried home their swag in a luxurious leather Brahmin bag.

Bill and Joan Martin launched the designer handbag company in 1982; it has since become a well-known and much-loved brand. Brahmin, family-owned and operated until 2018, has always subscribed to philanthropy as a main tenet of business.

In 2006, the Martins became full-time residents of Naples. Although their brand remains headquartered in Massachusetts, they found charitable opportunities in their new community.

“We had been attending the Naples Winter Wine Festival for several years when we were asked to consider contributing the bags presented to all guests,” remarks Joan. “That was a no-brainer for me as we loved the charity. I loved the opportunity to design something that was just right for that mission.”

Coming up with a new bag every year is no easy feat. “You need to find a bag that will hold all of the goodies you receive; it needs to match the decor of the event, as well as the theme, and it has to be stylish,” explains Joan. “It’s a big responsibility but also a big

Gourmet Goodness

A notable business that continually supports the NWWF is Bleu Provence, an award-winning restaurant offering the finest in French cuisine, as well as an extraordinary selection of wines.

“We have had the honor and privilege to support the Naples Winter Wine Fest since its inception 19 years ago,” explains Jacques Cariot, who co-owns the much-loved Naples dining spot with wife Lysielle, the restaurant’s chef de cuisine.

“Helping the NWWF is a natural thing to do when you want to give back to the community that supports you, when you love and respect kids, when you love wine and food, and when you want to show gratitude to the people who have built this county and town where we live.”

Almost every single year, Bleu

Provence has donated a lot to be auctioned consisting of a delectable gourmet feast for 20 to 80 epicures, made from the best ingredients the world has to offer and served with unrivaled wines. Most often, the dinner takes place within the intimate walls of the restaurant, which is closed for the occasion and transformed and decorated according to a selected theme.

“We try each time to exceed our guests’ expectations,” says Cariot. “No expense is spared, and every effort is made to help the NWWF raise more money with this lot every year. It is impossible not to be attracted and committed by this caritative organization’s spirit of excellence, especially when our business— Bleu Provence—is based on the same values.”

Although a majority interest of Brahmin was sold five years ago, the new management believes in the initiative and has kept relations strong, agreeing to continue supporting the beloved Naples festival. Although she is no longer involved with the day-to-day operations of the company, Joan provides updates and is always delighted to share her opinion of which bags would make a good choice for the yearly contribution.

“It’s been a joy to have Brahmin be a part of this charity. It will always be a part of our hearts,” she adds.

Movers and Shakers

Perhaps the unsung hero of the NWWF is William C. Huff, a logistical support company servicing the festival since 2015. William C. Huff assists by moving and setting up lots, transporting wine from donator’s homes and restaurants, moving wine glasses and props, and more. Their trucks are provided free of charge.

“Our role begins on Tuesday [before the event], when we begin getting props and wine glasses to the Ritz-Carlton; this is our shortest day,” says Jim Henderson, CEO/ owner of the company.

“On Wednesday, the collection of the wine lots begins, as well as the setting up of the lots in the ‘lot room.’ Thursday through Saturday night, a four-man crew averages about 16 to 18 hours a day, with Saturday night’s hours going into

early Sunday morning.”

Monies raised by the wine fest benefit NCEF, the organization that distributes grants to local charities. A past grant recipient is Friends of Foster Children Forever. An honorary board member to this organization, Henderson, as a child, was placed in foster care with his four siblings. This charity—along with NCEF—is particularly near and dear to his heart.

With help from NCEF and other supporters, Friends of Foster Children Forever is growing as an organization. “Today, our focus is on education,” explains Henderson. “Our tutoring program is seeing an almost 100 percent high school graduation rate; we assign mentors to help foster children get into posthigh school programs and transition to independence.”

Donations to Devour

Richard D’Amico—proprietor of popular Third Street South restaurants Campiello Ristorante & Bar and The Continental—offers up what he does best: food.

The Thursday before the festival, Campiello closes its doors to the public and hosts the Grand Crew party. Chefs and vintners who come to town to participate in the dinners gather for this casual event complete with a wine bar, Champagne bar, and new to 2023, a caviar station. “About 350 people attend,” says D’Amico. He likes to remind his staff there is probably not another place in the world where so many great culinary team members—from line cooks to sommeliers and chefs—are assembled in one place at one time.

The next day, as the staff at

Campiello recuperate, regroup, and get back to business, staff members at D’Amico’s other restaurant, The Continental, prepare and serve food for the Meet the Kids tour and luncheon held at an off-site venue. “The venue changes every year,” explains D’Amico, who remarks that The Continental started providing the lunch in 2016 and has participated every year since, except in 2018 and when COVID prevented such gatherings.

Although the festival happens during the busy tourist season in Southwest Florida and D’Amico himself is too busy working to attend, he comments that it is “pretty special” to be involved in the epic event. “In a town known for its wine drinking but not wine growing, it’s quite amazing that we host a charity festival larger than the one in Napa.”

The restaurant group also donates to the online auction— items like dinners for 10 in The Club Room or a vertical steak tasting. “We like to mix it up,” says D’Amico.

Dream Machine

Auction lot number 38 (out of a total of 50 lots listed in the 2023 festival catalogue) details a superlative package, stating that the winner will drive away in a luxurious new Bentley Bentayga Azure, completely customized for the Naples Winter Wine Festival. In fact, the winner is, according to the description, the only person on earth who will get behind the wheel of this unique vehicle.

Bentley Naples began providing luxury vehicles for the wine fest in 2007, according to Taylor Agin, marketing and events director. It donated Bentleys in 2007, 2008, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, and again this past year. “We became an official corporate partner in 2020,” Agin explains, noting that “since 2007, we have been a partner in lots, car loans, and purchasing tickets to the festival on behalf of Bentley Naples.”

Typically, the CEO, COO, and the marketing director of Bentley North America attend the event; Jason Reidel, the general manager and partner of Bentley Naples, and other staff also

attend. “This year we increased our corporate partnership to a higher level than in past years,” explains Agin, who says the company is “excited to give back even more this year and to be part of a weekend filled with giving back to the children of our community.”

When asked why they choose to support the NWWF, Agin comments: “This event is one of the largest fundraisers in the country, and all the donations raised stay in Collier County. They support so many different organizations, rather than just one.”

She continues: “We love our community and want to give back in as many ways as we possibly can. We hope to continue to partner with the Naples Children & Education Foundation for many years to come.” «

VITA LION

If you have a need for speed but still want zero emissions, the gorgeous 34foot Vita Lion is the dayboat for you. This mighty beast can reach a top speed of 35 knots, courtesy of twin 335-hp electric motors. Throttle back to the Lion’s more genteel 22-knot cruising speed and you can run for 90 minutes or more than 40 miles.

It’s admittedly not enough for a sprint to the Bahamas, but plenty for a jaunt to your favorite Intracoastal

watering hole. And if you can find yourself a marina with Tesla-style DC fast-charging, the bank of batteries can recharge in around an hour and a half.

Britain’s Vita Power developed the carbon-fiber-hulled Lion from an Italian design, and it was originally built in France by JFA Yachts. Recently, however, Maine’s Hodgdon Yachts began building Lions for the U.S. market. (vita-power.com)

DUFFY SUN CRUISER 22

You can’t talk about electric boats and not talk about Duffy. Since 1970, more than 14,000 of these fringe-topped, cocktail-hour cruisers have been sold. In Duffy’s home port of Newport Beach, California, there are an estimated 3,500 of them silently gliding around. It’s simply the world’s best-selling electric boat.

The beloved Duffy 22 is the perfect friends and family runabout, with cushy seats for 12, a built-in fridge, and a multitude of cupholders. Don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry, though. Top speed is a leisurely 6 mph

VENUS SPEEDSTER X

Attention-seekers should turn the page right now. That’s because this adorable electric runabout is guaranteed to spin heads faster than a David and Victoria Beckham sighting outside Joe’s Stone Crab.

Inspired by Porsche’s iconic 1959 356 Speedster sportscar, this stunning new 32-foot Venus Speedster X joins the builder’s original 22-foot version (pictured) that’s been renamed the Venus Speedster. It’s the creation of British yachting specialist Seven Seas, which operates its U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale.

One especially cool feature is Duffy’s patented Power Rudder setup. This integrates the electric motor with the rudder and fourbladed prop, allowing the whole assembly to rotate almost 90 degrees for easy-peasy docking. (duffyboats.com)

Gas-powered Speedster Xs are available with up to 600 horsepower and twin jet drives that can rocket it to a top speed of close to 50 knots. But with growing demand for an eco-friendlier version, the Speedster X is being offered with zero-emission electric power. That means a 50kW Torqeedo electric motor juiced by a 40-kWh battery pack giving a top speed of 21 knots. Throttle back to a more sedate 6 knots and you can cruise for up to 9 hours on a single charge.

The boat-loving Beckhams would approve. (sevenseasyachts.eu)

TAIGA ORCA JET SKI

No one likes the droning, swarm-of-bees sound of a Jet Ski at full tilt—not to mention the stinky aroma of the unburned hydrocarbons it emits. Make it all-electric and the droning goes away. So does the smell. People on the beach will smile again.

This is the thinking at Montreal’s Taiga Motors, which recently introduced the world’s first series-production, battery-powered personal watercraft (PWC) it calls the Orca.

There’s the option of 90-hp or 160-hp motors, both juiced by a 24-kWh lithium battery bank that sits low in the craft for added stability. With the 160 you’re looking at a top speed of 54 knots and

NAVIER 30 ARC ONE

Anyone who’s watched America’s Cup sailboats in action will know that foiling does wonders for performance. Now Silicon Valley–based Navier plans to use the same technology for its very cool, very clever hydrofoiling electric dayboat, the Navier 30.

With its retractable foils and twin 90-kWh electric motors connected to a large battery bank, the carbon-hulled 30-footer can fly 4 feet above the waves at 35 knots. Throttle back to 20 and the projected range is around 75 nautical miles.

Ease out of your slip, lower the front and rear active foils, and once the speed reaches 15 knots, the hull levitates out of the water and soars above the waves. Retract the foils and the dayboat can

Ski boats are all about instant torque to punch you out of the hole and leap on the plane. New California start-up Arc Boat Company is ensuring its Arc One ski boat will do just that, courtesy of a honking 500-hp electric motor.

It’s enough juice to propel this lightweight, aluminum-hulled 24-footer to a top speed of 35 knots, with plenty of amps to keep you skiing or wakeboarding for up to 5 hours. Find yourself a DC fast-charger and you can get an 80 percent top-off in as little as 40 minutes, or overnight with a regular plug.

It’s hard to beat the price of solar power. We’re talking zip, zero, nada. When it comes to the Turkish-built Silent 60 power catamaran, with its rooftop crammed with solar panels, the power of the sun can push it at 6 or 7 knots for 9 hours, or more than 100 miles.

We recently got to try out the Silent 60 on a cruise along the Intracoastal through Fort Lauderdale and came away wowed by the yacht’s silent running, laid-back feel, and island-hopping cruising potential.

GREENLINE 40

Slovenian builder Greenline Yachts has been one of the true pioneers of electric propulsion for power cruisers. Since 2008, it’s been offering diesel-hybrid or fully electric power for its range of sleek, family-friendly yachts from 33 to 68 feet.

One of our favorites is the salty Greenline 40 with its twin 67-hp Torqeedo electric motors, six high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, and roof filled with solar panels. No, it’s not fast; expect a trawler-like 7 knots cruising speed that will take you around 35 miles. But Greenline is happy to work with a buyer to

spec out a boat that meets his or her ideal range and speed, with the option of bigger batteries and more powerful motors, or a hybrid alternative with a compact diesel generator to ease range anxiety.

RAND ESCAPE 30

Who doesn’t love Danish design, style, and craftsmanship? Denmark’s Rand Boats has been incorporating all three elements into its lineup of militaristic-looking speed boats since the company was founded in 2013.

Rand’s newest and most exciting offering is the allelectric Escape 30 center console, which gives owners the choice of three power options, from a modest 140 hp, to a mid-range 355 hp, to an insane 616 hp that delivers a 55knot top speed. All this is built into a hull that uses lots of

CANDE C-8

High-tech Swedish boatbuilder Candela is creating waves in the world of all-electric dayboats. Its latest is the 28foot, all-carbon-fiber C-8 with remarkable foiling technology.

Power up to around 16 knots and the boat rises on its two forward foils and single rear foil to cruise at 24 knots with bursts up to its 30-knot top speed. Its super efficiency is partly due to its single electric motor that’s mounted in torpedolike housing in the rearward foil.

And that efficiency is going to be

heightened with the partnership between Candela and the Swedish carmaker Polestar, which will provide its battery and smart-charging systems. Polestar’s know-how should improve on the C-8’s current range of around 57 miles at cruising speed.

Claimed to have all the space and functionality of a 40-footer, the Escape 30 has seating for 12, acres of sun loungers, an outdoor kitchen, and a surprisingly spacious cabin with a queen-size bed and shower compartment. DINING

Whole Fish Heaven

For seafood lovers, the ceremony of a server presenting a perfectly cooked whole fish is a dream. However, some diners shy from the experience, unnerved by the eyes of the fish, complete with scales and tail. Then, there is the often-cumbersome task of deboning, too.

At Truluck’s, located in Old Naples off Fourth Avenue South, you’re able to have the best of both worlds. The seafood restaurant is famous for many things, including the whole branzino that arrives ready for consumption. The mild white fish is roasted and served with olives, capers, lemon, and oregano vinaigrette. Perhaps the best part, though, is that the chef removes the head, tail, and bones. The only thing asked of diners? Enjoyment.

If branzino isn’t your fish of choice, fear not. Additional selections are available on Truluck’s regular menu, including Florida black grouper, Idaho rainbow

Caring Through Culinary Creations

You won’t find David Rashty manning a traditional restaurant kitchen these days. He strikes an interesting culinary balance between creating artful four-course meals on yachts and preparing food for sustenance in field kitchens during natural disasters.

The hospitality business was not Rashty’s original career path; he came to his culinary career in 2006, when he took on the job of caring for his terminally ill father. “I was cooking for him every day, and he said you have to do something with this,” Rashty remembers. When his father passed away, Rashty went to the French Culinary Institute (now International Cu-

linary Center) in New York. His background in science was ideal for the molecular gastronomy craze that many sophisticated restaurants were embracing at the time.

Now, Rashty’s résumé holds the names of respected two- and three-star Michelin restaurants, and he’s worked alongside renowned chefs, including Masa Takayama, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Daniel Boulud, and Michael Schwartz.

Free of a traditional kitchen, Rashty uses his gourmet culinary talents through his Yacht Series dinners. Partnering with boat owners whose vessels stay docked much of the year, he creates excursions incorporating wine, sake, and whiskey dinners—and more.

“It’s something no one else is doing,” he says. “And it’s a lot of fun.”

Several years ago, on the east coast of Florida, Rashty became involved with feeding victims of disasters, from hurricanes to fires. This led to a

position with the American Red Cross disaster assistance team.

Following Hurricane Ian, the classically trained chef was instrumental in the massive effort to feed Southwest Floridians, helping to coordinate hundreds of thousands of meals without power and amongst hurricane debris. But taking care of people is in Rashty’s blood. From the north shore of Long Island, he worked as a paramedic through college and draws on that experience when serving disaster victims.

“Seeing what we saw on the islands—Sanibel, Captiva, Fort Myers Beach—was so sad,” he says. “But food is a great way to help people and to give comfort, even to those who had nothing.”

It’s the best of both worlds for the chef. While he gets to create beautiful meals with the finest ingredients for those with discerning palates, he also feeds those who simply need food to survive.

“I know it makes a difference; I can see it makes a difference,” he notes. Rashty says there is a common thread that ties us all together: “Food is our medicine.” (chefdavidrashty.com)

Luck of the IRISH

There’s a new place to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in Naples this year. Irish Times Bar & Grill opened just days before New Year’s Eve in Pavilion, a shopping center located in North Naples. Its opening has been long anticipated by fans of Irish culture and food—and by its owners.

Leasing for the pub was made official in November 2021, and an opening goal for Saint Patrick’s Day 2022 was set, according to co-owner Gerry McGovern. But the stars did not align.

McGovern is from Ireland and so is Ciaran Mosley, his business partner. The two met in New York City and for the last decade searched for the right business opportunity in the Naples area. Together, along with McGovern’s wife, Noleen, also a co-owner, they have worked to create a thriving pub atmosphere.

Dark wood, exposed brick, and plenty of high-top seating were incorporated into the restaurant’s aesthetic. The bar is long, spacious, and equipped with 20 taps that hold Irish staples such as Guinness, Harp, Smithwick’s, and

Kilkenny, along with Magners Irish Cider. You’ll also find a wide selection of Irish spirits, including whiskey and gin.

Irish Times offers iconic dishes, too, such as corned beef and cabbage and piping hot shepherd’s pie. Also on the menu are smoked Irish salmon and a traditional Irish lamb stew, topped with mashed potatoes. While there’s meat and potatoes, including curry fries (French fries covered in curry sauce), lighter options make an appearance on the menu, including the watermelon and macadamia salad with Cashel blue cheese that’s available for lunch and dinner. Vegans and those seeking gluten-free options are in luck too, as gluten-free bread and a vegan burger are available. (irishtimesnaples.com) –G.B.

The Club Room is a cozy, seasonal outpost at Campiello Ristorante & Bar on Third Street South, where people mingle for craft cocktails, live music, and fabulous fare. As for the vibe, expect sophistication. Leather furniture, silk pendants, commissioned artwork, and a chic fireplace create a plush place to gather and enjoy savory eats.

Campiello made OpenTable’s list of top 100 Most Beloved Restaurants in America (2022), and the Italian restaurant’s full menu is served in The Club Room. House-made pastas include cacio e pepe, papparedelle with braised veal, and the restaurant’s signature: comforting Spaghetti Alla Chitarra with marinara and meatballs. In the mood for meat? The balsamic-glazed beef is another favorite and is also served over spaghetti.

Besides this award-winning menu, live music—often jazz—is offered seasonally at The Club Room. In addition, a late-night menu is available to patrons that includes well-curated items, such as a variety of charcuterie, antipasti, and the restaurant’s famous pizzas.

As for libations, The Club Room boasts a refined wine list, unique cocktails, and an after-dinner beverage service presented table side on the cart del salone.

SOARING into March

THIS MONTH PROMISES NEW BEGINNINGS AND CELEBRATIONS

Whether you’re honoring women’s rights and achievements on International Women’s Day, observing the beginning of spring, or celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day, you’ll have no shortage of opportunities to toast in March. Enter the Pineapple Express. A playful riff on the Jungle Bird—a tropical negroni that debuted in the 1970s—this version is as light and vibrant as the month itself. By blending a decidedly botanical rum with juicy pineapple, a bright aperitivo , and a touch of (green!) aromatic basil, a new bird takes fl ight.

Pineapple Express Ingredients

1 1/2 oz. Pa’lante Botanical Rum

3/4 oz. Cocchi Americano Bianco

1/2 oz. fresh lime juice

1/2 oz. agave syrup

1 1/2 oz. basil and pineapple juice (recipe below)

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with crushed ice.

Basil and Pineapple Juice Ingredients (makes 1 cup)

1/3 pineapple, peeled, cut, and heart removed

1 small bunch basil

Add all ingredients to a juicer or blender and juice/blend before straining.

POWER MOVES

Starting SELF-DEFENSE

Self-defense training can benefit anyone, but it may be especially helpful for women and for children dealing with bullies. The Academy of Martial Arts in Naples incorporates self-defense into their regular karate training but also offers stand-alone classes for those interested in the basics. Director Deb Hamilton says they work on skills ranging from how to avoid someone attacking you to teaching kids that it’s okay to hit adults who are trying to grab them. “If someone attacks you, the first thing you do is freeze,” Hamilton explains. “By practicing repeated self-defense techniques, you create body memory so you have an initial reaction.” Everyone is welcome in the dedicated self-defense course, and no experience is needed. But while the class will give you the basic information, Hamilton recommends further training or even taking the class multiple times. If you “do it once, then as soon as you leave, that body memory is not there,” she explains. Even if you can’t commit in the long-term though, Hamilton advises that everyone complete at least the one self-defense class: “It’s better than nothing.”

Clued into CAFFEINE

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 400 mg of caffeine per day (or four to five cups of coffee) isn’t harmful to most healthy adults. But Betsy Opyt, a licensed dietitian and integrative functional nutrition specialist in Naples, says each person’s ideal daily caffeine intake differs. “A lot of it depends on the way your body metabolizes caffeine,” she explains. “It’s knowing your body and the way it associates with food.”

If you’re like many people, you’re very familiar with caffeine from your morning cup (or cups) of coffee. National Caffeine Awareness Month in March invites you to consider the common pick-me-up a little more closely. Recent research suggests that consuming moderate amounts of caffeine may lower your risk of some diseases, improve performance when exercising, and provide the well-known benefit of reducing fatigue. At the same time, too much caffeine over a long period of time may have negative effects. So what’s the optimal amount?

To gauge appropriate levels of caffeine for your body, Opyt first recommends paying attention to how well you’re sleeping. If you have a smartwatch, she suggests checking your heart rate for correlations with the amount of caffeine you’re consuming each day. When you’re feeling stressed, she advises skipping the caffeine. Or, for lower caffeine options that can still help perk you up, she recommends coffee alternatives like matcha and other teas. Opyt also offers a few additional points to keep in mind when choosing a caffeinated food or beverage.

“You want it to be from a natural source; you don’t want to get it from things like energy drinks,” she explains, noting that tea, coffee, and dark chocolate provide health benefits like antioxidants in addition to caffeine. For a healthy caffeine kick, try her chocolate pudding recipe at right. (healthyconceptsconsulting.com) –E.K.

Delayed Diagnosis: HOW TO COPE

Recent research indicates that many diagnoses and treatments were likely delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This rings true for Lindita Hobdari, MD, a family physician at Hobdari Family Health in Naples, who has seen more patients appearing with heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other conditions. She notes that—for some people—receiving a chronic disease diagnosis can feel like the end of the world. “It’s not,” she says. “You live with it, you manage it.” If you’re in this situation, Hobdari recommends focusing on improving your health with lifestyle changes like regular exercise and a healthy diet full of different colored produce. While you may have periods of remission, she says in most cases the disease is still there, so keep taking medications as prescribed by your doctor. She adds that it’s important to use trusted

HIP HEALTH TIPS

Hip mobility or flexibility can affect people at any age and often decline because of a sedentary lifestyle. Why does this matter? “If you’re lacking in flexibility, then your muscles won’t have the power to contract and push you in any direction that you’re trying to go,” explains Ashley Reed, the clinic director of Fyzical Northeast Naples. When people sit too much, “hip flexors are going to become overly tight and our glutes are going to become overly weak, and that creates an imbalance, which then leads down a path of having poor posture,” notes Reed. That’s why difficulty getting out of the car, lower back pain, and even trouble swinging a golf club may actually stem from your hips—everything is connected. The way to improve hip mobility, she says, is by stretching your calves and hamstrings and increasing your glute strength. She recommends exercises like climbing stairs, doing squats, and walking sideways or backwards. (Tip: Start off in a pool if you have trouble balancing.) The important thing is not to neglect your hips. “I think people do a great job of working their quads in the front and their hamstrings in the back, but we forget that we have an outside and an inside to the hip as well,” Reed adds. “We have to work all of those muscles equally in order to continue to keep our hips functioning well.” (fyzical.com) –E.K.

Understanding Skin Spots

Have you noticed flat brown spots appearing on your hands, face, or other parts of your body? Known as lentigines, these areas of increased pigment develop after years of sun exposure or sunburn and are influenced by your genetics, skin type, and habits.

“Why one spot versus another [on your body]? We don’t know,” says Debra L. Bailey, MD, a dermatologist and founder of High Tide Dermatology Center in Naples. She explains that the spots aren’t a problem

unless you see them change, which could indicate cancer. If you dislike how they appear aesthetically, you can help prevent them by limiting your sun exposure and wearing sun-protective clothing (Bailey notes that sunscreen is only partially protective). For existing spots, cosmetic treatments include cryosurgery to freeze them off, lasers to remove them, fading creams to lighten them, or a chemical peel to improve appearance.

Bailey advises being careful of home remedies and recommends talking to a dermatologist to determine the best course of treatment. Most of all, keep an eye on the spots and get them checked if you develop numerous areas or if they start changing. This is especially the case if you have lighter skin and are at higher risk from sun exposure, explains Bailey. “Those people are more susceptible to skin cancer, so they should be monitored more closely.” (naplesdermdoc.com) —E.K.

We take pride in decorating and keeping them clean and tidy, but what we might not realize is that the typical home’s air quality may be up to five times more polluted than the air outdoors, according to studies conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Considering that the average American spends roughly 90 percent of their time inside, taking a good look at what affects our indoor air quality can have a huge impact on our health and well-being.

Ironically, what we use to clean our homes are often top culprits. Ever notice yourself holding your breath as you spray an oven or counter cleaner because it irritates your eyes

or causes headaches? It could be doing far more with chronic exposure. The chemicals commonly found in our cleaning products, detergents, and personal care items not only cause direct irritation, but they can also exacerbate allergies, asthma, reproductive and developmental issues, autoimmune diseases, neurological damage, and hormone disruption. Furthermore, just because something claims to be natural, clean, green, or biodegradable does not mean it’s nontoxic. Many brands engage in “greenwashing,” the act of marketing something as environmentally sensitive without following through on those promises. Studies have shown that up to 95 percent of so-called “green” products contain toxic ingredients; this can happen because there’s a huge gray area in which manufacturers don’t have to disclose certain ingredients. For example, the term “fragrance” can cover a vast array of potentially harmful chemicals.

Read on to discover some of the top toxic ingredients and recipes for cleaner swaps.

TOP 10 OFFENDERS

Phthalates: Found in most “fragrances.” Instead opt for unscented, fragrance-free, or products scented with essential oils.

Ammonia: Found in glass cleaners, stainless-steel polish, floor cleaners, and cleaning sprays.

Chlorine: Found in bleach, toilet cleaners, and shower cleaners.

Sodium hydroxide: Found in oven and drain cleaners.

Perchloroethylene (PERC): Found in dry-cleaning products and stain removers.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): Common sources include bleach, laundry and dishwashing detergents, disinfectant sprays, and paint.

Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): Used in nonstick cookware as well as Scotchgard.

Triclosan: Found in antibacterial soaps and detergents as well as toothpaste.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats): Found in disinfectant wipes, sprays, sanitizers, and dryer sheets. For an alternative to dryer sheets, try wool dryer balls.

2-butoxyethanol: Found in allpurpose spray cleaners.

Spring Cleaning

EMBRACE A TIME OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND PERSONAL RENEWAL

The tradition of spring cleaning resonates with me on so many levels. The early spring is a great time to detoxify the body and release the built-up stodginess of the winter months. I like to focus on my diet, eating fruits and vegetables in their most natural, raw state, while also drinking lots of water. Over the years I’ve found that, for many, drinking fresh cucumber juice and antioxidant-rich celery juice can help flush the system of potential toxins. Another detoxifying libation is dandelion tea, which boasts a range of vitamins and minerals and is celebrated in traditional herbalism for its ability to support the kidneys and liver.

I love bringing this feeling of freshness to the skin, too, by employing treatments and protocols designed to gently polish away dullness. In addition to making skin supple, dry brushing can activate the lymphatic system and facilitate healthy detoxification. I also incorporate mineral salt baths into my routine to cleanse away fatigue and restore energy.

As the days grow longer and brighter, now is the perfect opportunity to awaken new ideas, coordinate new plans, and activate new habits—whether that means getting serious about an exercise regimen, committing to foreign language lessons, or booking a weekend retreat with friends. In the same way, the change of season can spur you to clean up your thoughts and

words, eliminating self-deprecating talk, unsympathetic criticism, or unkind sentiments about others. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter and open you’ll feel. If you catch yourself in negativity, don’t worry: This practice can take a few weeks to build. Yet, I’ve found that initiating these shifts over time can change your perspective completely. After all, these are the moments that fill our days and, ultimately, become the content of our lives.

Then, embark on an energetic cleansing ritual using sound vibration to clean stagnancy out of the home. First, open a few windows to let out any staleness. Next, with a bell, chime, or crystal bowl, wander through your home and re-energize every corner, ringing your environment into perfect harmony.

Refresh and recharge your body, mind, soul, and home by embarking on various spring cleaning rituals and traditions.

Carry that WEIGHT

THE INS AND OUTS OF THE CARRIED INTEREST LOOPHOLE

When the sweeping Inflation Reduction Act became law in August, one proposed change to a tax provision was removed at the eleventh hour, causing considerable controversy. The provision, called carried interest, is not one that most people can even explain, but it has been a touchstone in the ongoing argument that the IRS code unfairly allows the rich to get richer.

Carried interest refers to the favorable capital gains tax treatment for profits paid to investment managers and partners, particularly in alternative assets such as private equity, hedge funds, and venture capital funds. Typically, 20 percent of the profits of a fund are shared among managers. Because most of their compensation is in the form of carried interest, they pay the lower capital gains tax rate, which tops out at 20 percent, on the bulk of their income, rather than the top 37 percent federal income tax rate. The latest reform under the Inflation Reduction Act would not have done away with carried interest, but it would have increased the capital gains holding period by two years, among other changes.

Critics decr y carried interest as a loophole for the wealthy. Supporters say it’s justifiable incentive for the risks these funds take on. Either way, it has endured multiple Congressional attacks and survived.

Sofia Johan, associate professor of finance at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, says the reason carried interest is considered a loophole is because many of these fund managers are putting little to none of their own money at risk, compared with the potential profit. “If you or I as investors put up our money, we expect to be compensated in some way for taking risk. There is an opportunity cost because the money we invest could be used for something else.” The potential payoff for investors, she adds, provides the incentive to

168 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED BALANCE

take the gamble. “But for many of these fund managers, there is no opportunity cost.”

Yet in some ways, carried interest is just the same as the stock options paid to CEOs of major companies, which make up most of their income, says Johan. “So then how do you differentiate between CEOs and venture capital managers? They all have a major financial stake in the success of the company or fund.”

In addition, if there is no profit, there is no carried interest, so managers are incentivized to perform, explains Johan. Contrast that with a mutual fund, where investors pay management fees whether the fund performs well or not. “If you have kids and they do poorly in school, you still have to clothe and feed them, but if you incentivize them by saying you’ll pay them $100 if they get an A, it’s kind of the same idea.”

When the funds do well, it also impacts more than just the wealthy, Johan adds. Pensions, insurance companies, banks, and other institutional investors need to diversify their cash holdings into alternative investments that don’t correlate to stocks and bonds. They often invest in hedge funds or venture capital, and the performance of the funds is reflected in the overall health of the pension or institution.

Democrats have estimated that closing the loophole would result

dreams.

in $14 billion in additional tax revenue over the next decade. But Johan argues that might come at the cost of innovation for U.S. companies such as Amazon. “Virtually all successful public companies have benefited from venture capital and private equity fund investors,” she says. “Without carried interest as incentive, what would happen to the next Tesla? The only way to know the answer is to test it by removing the carried interest benefit, and I don’t know who would want to make that call.” «

EASY BEING GREEN

While flocks of Neapolitans don Saint Paddy’s Day attire this month, Bonnie, a 26-year-old military macaw at Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, wears green year-round. She keeps her enviable plumage looking fabulous with frequent baths in the rain or from a hose. As an animal ambassador, Bonnie can sometimes be spotted with one of her keepers greeting guests throughout the zoo’s 43 acres. According to zoo staff, she craves peanuts and walnuts, using her powerful beak to break through the hard shells. Atypical of many parrot species, Bonnie is a bird of few words; her favorite utterance is “wow.” She’s no birdbrain though. This clever chick is trained to participate in her own care by voluntarily hopping on the scale, as well as presenting her wings for checkups and her feet for nail trimming. Wow, indeed!
