FROM THE EDITOR
It has long been said that home is where the heart is. When calling the Paradise Coast home, you quickly realize this is a place that warms the heart like few cities can. Naples is in many ways still a tightly knit town, even as it continually expands thanks to the contributions of its generous residents. In this Home issue, our cover story takes us into the Naples apartment of philanthropists and art collectors Gerald and Jody Lippes, who open up about their “Passion to Collect,” beginning on page 54. Beyond their acquisition skills, the couple also reflects upon how art enriches the community they call home. Of course, towns are always evolving and in this issue, we also focus on a slice of East Naples that is in significant transition. If you haven’t driven around the Bayshore Arts District in some time, you’ll be amazed at our in-depth look at the massive changes afoot. Whether it’s the growth in new home construction or food and arts-focused businesses, the idea is to usher in a hip, creative vibe that can be built upon in an area of East Naples that has long been in need of more than just a facelift. See how it’s all coming together in “Art Start,” beginning on page 68. It’s also the start of a new season and time to plan celebrations. If you’re among those who cherish entertaining at home for the holidays, then head straight to page 62 to experience some “Holiday Magic.” We asked local creatives to design inventive tablescapes for a trio of upcoming observances, and the stunning results will inspire entertaining ideas for your next Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas party. Looking beyond the holidays, inspiration abounds with the latest palettes released by the Pantone Color Institute for 2019, specifically selected for housewares and interior design. Turn to page 42 in Abode to see our “Color Coded” picks spurred by these trending colors. No matter your style or the colors you choose, may your home be the sanctuary that calms you like no other.

Fall WALKS The Naples Botanical Garden is celebrating the change in seasons by launching its inaugural Fall Walk series, October 26-28. The family-friendly holiday event will include lights, food, music, and children’s activities throughout the garden each night from 6 to 9 p.m. As it’s the weekend before Halloween, kids are welcome to come in costume, though adults are asked to leave their own masks at home. (naplesgarden.org)
IN BLOOM
There are several beautiful plants expected to be blossoming during the event. Here are a few to look for. Scott Florida Garden: The Coreopsis plant has yellow, daisylike blooms, while the Gaillardia (blanket flower) features colored petals that can display a mix of red, orange, and yellow. Both are a source of nectar for butterflies and bees. Lea Asian Garden: Keep an eye out for the Cassia Roxburghii (Roxburgh’s cassia), which has drooping branches filled with bursts of pink, rose, or orange blooms. Irma’s Garden: You can’t miss the Colvillea Racemosa (Colville’s Glory) tree, known for its bright orange flowers that grow in cone-like clusters.

INSIDER WHAT I’VE LEARNED
A WINNING HAND
PHIL WOOD
STEPPING UP Seniors using standard, wheel-less walkers are finding it easier to walk on the beach thanks to Naples entrepreneurs Stephanie Gomez and Eryk Hardwick. As the founders of Stabilized Steps, they beat more than 40 start-ups to win a $25,000 investment from a pitch competition modeled after the TV show Shark Tank. Their custom-molded nylon pad invention attaches to walkers to help stabilize steps on uneven surfaces like beach sand. Adrenaline Venture Fund organized the VenturePitch SWFL event at Babcock Ranch in Charlotte County and funded the investment, which they’ve since expanded to $100,000. (stabilizedsteps.com)
The president of John R. Wood Properties reflects on business successes and challenges, and the best antidote for stress As John R. Wood Properties marks its sixtieth anniversary in Naples, Phil Wood has remained steadfast at the helm of his father’s namesake company for more than half that time. Here, he shares life lessons in an edited interview with NI.

TEA in the Gardens
The Everglades Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs is expanding and will soon be home to a charming tea house solarium. Local Bonita Springs philanthropist Karin Moe donated $75,000 to the Wonder Gardens to create this enchanting vision for the glass-enclosed structure. “Karin Moe and her husband have been pillars of the community with large contributions here at the Wonder Gardens and the Center for the Arts,” says Thomas Hecker, executive director of the Wonder Gardens. Moe developed the idea after frequent visits to botanical gardens. She noticed that the architecture of the Parisian solarium is perfect for an afternoon tea in the garden. The tea house will offer tea, coffee, and local pastries during business hours. The Wonder Gardens also plans to use this space as a venue for public events. In addition to the tea house, the nonprofit will introduce three solariums that will feature butterflies and a variety of birds. The tea house solarium is expected to be open for business in November. (evergladeswondergardens.com) —Samantha Elliott 24
Secrets to success: Hard work. I get up at about 5 a.m. and try to beat everyone else to the punch. Also, a lot of strategic thinking. I’ve been living this business for more than 40 years, and I’m always thinking how we can do it better, beat our competition, and bring better customer service to our clients. Most valuable lesson: From a business standpoint, avoid debt. My grandparents lived through the depression, and my parents remembered it as kids. Even though they taught that lesson to me, I didn’t heed their advice too well at times. The recession from 2006 to 2009 certainly hit that message home in business. We did not react fast enough and did not realize how deep the recession was going to be. We now are building bigger reserves, so we’re more stable financially. Qualities that got him where he is today: Ethics and caring for others, which includes our employees, agents, customers, and those less fortunate in the community. Best stress buster: I try to head off (stress) before it happens by starting each day being grateful. Anytime during the day that I start going the other way, I turn it around by finding something I’m grateful for at that moment. We can always find things to be grateful for. Advice to his younger self: Don’t be so critical of yourself. Most memorable read: Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Al Ries and Jack Trout. It was written about 30 years ago, but it’s the ultimate marketing book and explains some of the greatest strategies of all time. For example, Avis was always behind Hertz, and finally, they said: “We’re number two, we try harder.” It was a great positioning statement and helped them achieve great things. Best advice for the next generation: Be honest and ethical in all your dealings.

1. The Revs Institute is one of the best-kept secrets in Naples. And you don’t have to be a car enthusiast to be wowed by the spectacular collection of vintage and sports autos on display in this sprawling three-story showroom. The more than 100 impeccably restored and maintained vehicles, which date back to 1896, are the private collection of the nonprofit’s founder, Miles Collier. The institute also boasts one of the largest archives on the history of the automobile. The two-hour docent tour provides a unique perspective on the motor gems, with no barriers in the way. Tickets must be reserved in advance, whether you plan to explore the gallery on your own or schedule a tour. (revsinstitute.org)

3. The Museum of the Everglades in Everglades City is a worthy stop when visiting one of the most popular areas of Southwest Florida. The Everglades is steeped in history, and the museum adds context. Aside from compelling short films, there is an array of important displays and artifacts from the era of the Calusa tribe of Native Americans to the present day. While the permanent exhibits cover the lives of early settlers, the museum also showcases the work of local and regional artists, with a new exhibit every month. For an even more in-depth experience, sign up for a one-hour walking tour to expand your knowledge of the historic buildings around Everglades City. Tours must be scheduled in advance. THE GOODS
Intrigue ABOUNDS From artful trinkets to treasures, this Naples gift shop is certain to CAPTIVATE and AMUSE By Carla Evans Whether you’re a vacationer in search of a souvenir or a local simply stopping in for a last-minute gift, every trip to Regatta on Fifth Avenue South in Naples reveals an everchanging mix of whimsical and practical items. The gift shop has been a fixture on Fifth Avenue South since 2001, but originated on the Dockside Boardwalk in 1985. Boya Mosher, the current owner and former manager, settled in Naples for its natural beauty and laidback atmosphere. Mosher has a knack for discovering one-of-a-kind treasures, which turns the store into a fun house with something for everyone at every budget. She also carries the artwork of at least a halfdozen local vendors, including Gail Burd’s shell frames and cards, which have long been a customer favorite. “We never lose track of the fact that Regatta is ‘fun things for fun people,’” Mosher says. Here, we present three gift picks based on personality. 28
3 GIFT PICKS 1. The Quirky Creative: For colorful, fun decor, consider artistdesigned garden critters (pictured above) created from recycled oil drums. 2. The Beach Lover: There are a myriad of unique coastal pieces for those living the salt life, including vintage model sailboats and personalized beach home signs (pictured top right). 3. The Whimsical Bohemian: Embrace the ethereal with Uno de 50’s dragonfly necklace, a Brighton “Naked” leather handbag, or a framed shell poem by local artist Gail Burd (pictured bottom right).

Saddle UP By Katherine Lande
Appearing on the arm of every “it” girl in the early aughts, including Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, the Dior saddle bag became a distinctive icon of the decade. And if there’s one philosophy that can be counted on in fashion, it’s that everything old will become new again. For fall, Dior has revived John Galliano’s design and its nod to the equestrian world. A few updates, such as versions in a larger size and with an embroidered canvas ($8,500, dior.com) shown here, render this statement bag fit for the modern nomad. Turn the page for more wild wear.

A New CLASSIC
A Naples Mediterranean home gets reimagined with transitional flair By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Amber Frederiksen The trend to rethink Mediterranean-inspired architecture from the late 1990s and early aughts continues in Naples. For one couple who moved south from Canada, a bright, transitional style felt more apropos than the tired Mediterranean look, so they commissioned Chrissy Howard of Naples-based Jinx McDonald Interior Designs to helm the substantial renovation. Located in Olde Cypress, a gated golfing community in Naples, the home had great bones and a coveted view of the golf

course. Maintaining views was a priority, but what drove this project was “the client’s art collection from their extensive travels and making sure the artwork was the focal point in every space,” Howard says. “Everything else was the canvas or backdrop.” Guided by her client’s design philosophy that less is more, Howard and design associate Barbara Schwenk imbued the 3,580-square-foot residence with a sleeker look, partly by eliminating niches and arches. Replacing the original porcelain tile floor with an espresso wood-grain porcelain tile added density and provided contrast against the light walls. The designers maintained the tray ceilings, which helped delineate the living spaces in the spacious floor plan. They also kept the color palette simple. “We used only three colors: pure white, very light beige, and espresso,” Howard says. “Never underestimate 38

color. Painting is the most inexpensive thing you can do, and it can completely alter a space.” In the kitchen, a white glaze transformed the existing wood-faced cabinets. Keeping with the motif, Howard and her team installed “seamless” quartzite with bold gray veining on the backsplash and countertop. For contrast, they introduced espresso-hued accents via the kitchen island and a band of wood molding on the range hood. To achieve a cleaner look in the casually sophisticated family room, the designers removed a bulky media cabinet and finished the wall with a textured beige silk wallpaper, which serves as a chic backdrop for a custom media cabinet with perforated wood panels. The room is as inviting for watching television as it is for relaxing in front of a linear fireplace, above which hangs A Café in Paris, an oil painting by Canadian artist Andrea Padovani. Removing walls and niches opened up spaces and improved the overall flow. For instance, the living area adjacent to the kitchen was closed in and rather dark. In the absence of walls and heavy-handed interior details, the room shines with a simple fireplace and a quartet of pared

down wing chairs covered in an oatmeal-colored Sunbrella fabric. The clients didn’t like the idea of a chandelier in the dining room, so the designers installed overhead lighting and bronze sconces, which provide the ideal level of illumination and make a more modern statement. For continuity, they reupholstered the owner’s existing chairs with the same striped Crypton fabric introduced in the living room ottoman. “Crypton is a treated fabric that never absorbs liquids, and stains never penetrate this fabric,” Howard says. “It’s popular because you can’t tell if it is indoor/outdoor fabric, and it’s not scratchy.” In the study, the designers kept the original cabinets but painted them a deep java color to achieve a richer, more current look. “This is one of NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2018

ABODE the strongest rooms in the house and the only place where the espresso color is used vertically,” Schwenk says. The space is further modernized by the use of a sleek, metal-based desk and a light fixture with a rusty bronze mesh metal cage. The master bedroom is brighter and more cheerful, thanks to new lighting and flooring, a custom bed upholstered in tweed, oversized nightstands, and a seating area by the window. Once dark and dull, the master bath is now an inviting space with new white cabinetry and millwork, and quartzite countertops. A painted mirror frame and sconces echo the subtle tones of the framed watercolors by contemporary artist R. H. Quaytman. “I think this house supersedes trends,” Howard says. “Everything is classic, timeless, and restrained. I think the clients will love this measured interior 20 years from now.” «

he water transitions from emerald to azure to turquoise in smooth, long brushstrokes. The palm trees sway in unison, rooted in pillows of powdery white sand. The Technicolor marine life illuminates the surrounding shallows like underwater fireworks. I’m completely immersed in the natural splendor of the world’s second largest barrier reef, and for four days I’m privy to my own slice of this tropical dreamscape. I’ve just set foot on Cayo Espanto, a private island retreat with a personality as grand as its surrounds. Located three miles off the Belize mainland and hidden among more than 450 islands of the Belize Barrier Reef, this four-anda-half-acre caye (pronounced “key”) hosts Belize’s premier ultra-luxury resort. Its seven open-air villas serve as

panoramic windows to a Caribbean paradise, all in plain view beyond the billowing curtains of the canopy bed, private plunge pool, overwater deck, and from my exclusive swathe of beach. The island’s villas are positioned such that you’ll never encounter another guest during your stay—and despite a full house, that’s exactly the case for me. I do, however, interact regularly with my personal butler, Johnny, and his crew, who ensure that my every meal, every activity, pretty much every waking hour fulfills the ultimate castaway fantasy. In fact, the entire island staff that greeted me upon arrival (with refreshing cold towels, fruity cocktails, and genuine smiles, no less) magically make Cayo Espanto seem like my very own during my short tenure here. In four days, I want for nothing and have
everything. The preference forms I completed months prior have been painstakingly studied. Ceviche-and-Champagne lunches and lobsterlaced dinners are inspired by my foodie wish list. The spa therapist, who performs treatments in-villa, already knows my sore spots and the deep-tissue deliverance I require. Moreover, the island team has organized an itinerary that’s the perfect balance of relaxation and fun, allowing me to totally unplug—well, as much as any hyper Type A can. For my first “busy” day, they’ve planned an excursion dubbed “A Day at Sea with a Little Luxury,” which translates to spectacular snorkeling off a private yacht, gathering catch of the day (typically lobster, conch, and fish) alongside a local fisherman, and then enjoying that catch on a secluded white-sand beach with the seafood and libations made to order. Another day, I’m on a private charter to Hol Chan,

Belize’s famed national marine reserve, where the coral reefs teem with awe-inspiring diversity and richness. No doubt, these underwater kaleidoscopes of marine life are the most visually rewarding in all the Caribbean. Adding to the Hol Chan high is a detour to Shark Ray Alley to swim among massive schools of nurse sharks and stingrays in crystalline waters—and Instagram every second of it. It’s also possible to visit the Mayan ruins on the mainland with a short Cessna flight, or dive the Holy Grail of the barrier reef, the Great Blue Hole, but I choose to keep close to the island instead. Back on Cayo Espanto, languid days alter between sunbathing on

my deck, good reads in a hammock, kayak trips to nearby Ambergris Caye, and frivolous playtime on the oversized trampoline anchored a few hundred yards off the island. Each night is a fresh round of surprise and delight as Johnny and company serve dinner in swoon-worthy settings across the villa and island—from the deck to the beach to the island’s windswept north corner. Overall, the Cayo Espanto experience recalls the world-class private island vacations I’ve uncovered in the far reaches of the Pacific and Indian oceans. Yet I didn’t have to cross the globe to get here; it’s a simple two-hour flight from South Florida, a 10-minute puddle jumper, and a six-minute boat ride (equating to zero jet lag). Immersed in this world of complete escapism and raw natural beauty, it’s hard to believe I’m so close to home. It just goes to show you—heaven really isn’t that far away. (aprivateisland.com) «
ON THE HORIZON
FOUR SEASONS Resort and Residences Caye Chapel With micro-resorts like Cayo Espanto and a handful of backpacker retreats, Belize’s oceanic splendor has managed to float under the radar, even in today’s age of travel know-it-alls. All that’s likely to change in 2021 when Four Seasons debuts a 100-room, eco-minded resort on its own private Belizean island, Caye Chapel, a short distance from the country’s prized barrier reef. The resort, which will include Bora Bora– style overwater bungalows and its own airstrip, is set to be the centerpiece of a much-hyped, island-wide, 280-acre private resort community. Currently, Four Seasons devotees and investors are scrambling to buy a piece, with 35 private residences on offer in addition to 50 larger private estates, each on a lot with immediate beach and golf-course access. Avid snorkelers and divers can look forward to a central location near the reef and a Fabien Cousteau Nature and Conservation Center, the first of its kind in Central America. Golfers can anticipate teeing off to endless sea views on the 18-hole White Shark Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman in consultation with Lorena Ochoa. There’s also a chic beach club, a harbor, marina, and numerous food and beverage outlets in the works—plus the full gamut of the brand’s hallmark luxury amenities and services. Take It EASY
Carlisle Bay in Antigua specializes in vacation RELAXATION By Mary Murray
Visitors to Carlisle Bay can have their meals right on the water while taking in the sunset. Other activities include spa treatments, watersports, and boat trips past the Sleeping Indian mountain range.
In an era when experiential travel seems to reign supreme, there can be undue pressure to book vacations packed with tours, activities, museum outings, and elaborate meals. These mile-a-minute adventures might yield amazing Instagram shots, but they fail to deliver unadulterated relaxation. And given the pace of the world today, a long weekend of doing absolutely nothing can feel like pure bliss. Enter Carlisle Bay, a boutique resort located on the southern coast of Antigua. Here, bird chirps and tree frog croaks are your morning alarm clock, afternoon tea service is your sole commitment, and enchanting sunsets are your only way of marking the passage of time. When jetting off to Carlisle Bay, the lazing begins almost immediately. U.S. travelers can fly directly from Miami to the Antiguan capital of St. John’s, where a resort representative will fast-track you through customs before escorting you to a private car for the roughly 30-minute drive to the hotel. A single sip of the welcome cocktail—which changes frequently but always includes a seasonal exotic fruit garnish—signals that no, Toto, you’re not in Kansas anymore.
A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Carlisle Bay combines the ease of Caribbean living with luxury accommodations, fine dining, and plenty of nature excursions (if that’s what you’re into). The property exudes island cool à la James Bond, with rows of West Indies–style buildings nestled between verdant hills on one side and endless seas of blue on the other. The 82 oceanfront suites all feature either a terrace or a balcony equipped with a daybed for impromptu naps, as well as sleek, open interiors outfitted with white linens and sunbleached-wood ceilings. While most memories are made on the sand, there’s one Carlisle Bay experience guests can only savor in their private bathrooms. Everyone loves a

good soak, but the resort takes this pastime to another level with its Bath Butler service. Schedule a time and a spa attendant will come to your room to draw a warm bath, complete with candles and organic seaweed. That’s right, seaweed. This marine plant is super beneficial for skin, with hydrating, antiaging, and anti-inflammatory properties. Spend 30 minutes marinating in an underwater garden of seaweed and you’ll become a believer. Carlisle Bay also provides ample aquatic pursuits that take place on the open ocean instead of the confines of a tub. In addition to complimentary watersport rentals (sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing, and paddleboarding are always on the menu), guests can explore the Caribbean Sea by boat, with stops at snorkeling hotspots and past unique sights like the Sleeping Indian mountain range. No boat-based outing is complete without a trip to Antigua’s Naval Dockyard. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains naval structures protected by a walled enclosure, all situated along narrow bays. Visitors can walk the cobblestone streets and get a sense of what the area looked like during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when it was used as a stronghold for protecting England’s sugar cane interests on the island. But sightseeing can be tiring, and there’s no place like Carlisle Bay to destress after a long day of living the tourist life. Return to the warm embrace of a beach lounger in time to enjoy a traditional English tea by the ocean. Hot tea on the beach? Yes, yes, and yes—especially when the blend is lemongrass and it’s served with a selection of scones,

clotted cream, and jam. But be sure to save room for supper, because Carlisle Bay has many restaurants to choose from, such as the adults-only Jetty Grill, the Asian-influenced East, and the open-air Indigo on the Beach. But for every yin there is a yang, and at Carlisle Bay relaxation is balanced by vigorous activities, such as a rainforest hike. A nature guide will escort you up the side of a nearby hill, sporadically stopping to explain the indigenous vegetation along the way. After you traverse acres of fragrant lemongrass, you’ll arrive at the top and be handsomely rewarded with a panoramic view of Antigua’s southern coast. The vista is so comprehensive, you might even be able to spot the piña colada waiting for you back at the hotel bar. (carlisle-bay.com) «

INN & CLUB
VINTAGE Vacation
Retro resort life is alive and well at The Gasparilla Inn & Club By Mary Murray Florida’s reputation as a winter haven for Northerners has never been up for debate. But imagine the state’s appeal now versus 100 years ago, and postcards of theme parks and seaside cityscapes give way to sepia snapshots of beachgoers in turn-of-the-century bathing suits and fishermen hunting high-flying tarpon. It was a simpler time then—and those nostalgic for a Floridian vacation of yesteryear can experience it all at The Gasparilla Inn & Club. Located in the village of Boca Grande on the barrier island of Gasparilla, this century-old resort helped put Southwest Florida on the holiday map. Founded as the Hotel Boca Grande, the original two-story, 20room structure quickly grew in size and fame. Early on, it hosted luminaries like J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford, with the majority of its guests arriving via boat or train. While the railroad has since closed (replaced in 1958 by a causeway), The Gasparilla Inn & Club remains, having earned a designation as one of the state’s largest surviving hotels and a member of the Historic Hotels of America. The inn underwent many renovations in its youth. A neoclassical facade and loggia, added to the main building in 1931, welcomes all visitors. Yellow cottages and homes are scattered throughout the property and provide spacious, family-style accommodations. The 63 inn rooms—
some original, some additions—are a step back in time, complete with actual keys and antique furniture. An Old Florida approach to decor permeates the entire inn. Wicker rocking chairs invite rest. Ample orchids dress walls and tables. Seashells are expertly stacked in dormant fireplaces and caringly arranged in framed sailor’s valentines. Room upon room of tropical prints in shades of pink and lime recall the most sublime of Lilly Pulitzer boutiques. Perhaps the most stylish spot is the main dining room, with its various green accents complemented by a picturesque view of the lawn and golf course. Here, dinner features the freshest products and reflects the inn’s overall theme of timeless elegance. Think: white asparagus vichyssoise and Florida black grouper in a clam butter sauce. Breakfast is another draw, one that stars decadent entrees like lobster scrambled eggs to start your day. At The Gasparilla Inn & Club, that day can be as relaxing or action-packed as you like. Rent a bike and follow a path that runs the length of the island, with stops at salt-kissed lighthouses. Kick back at the Beach Club and laze away on the private swathe of sand. Sport your whites and play croquet at the Mallet Club. Or, take a cue from the inn’s earliest visitors and hit the water for some sport fishing. A seasonal resort, The Gasparilla Inn & Club shutters for the summer but will reopen October 4. Historic charm and an authentic taste of Old Florida await. (the-gasparilla-inn.com) «

San Gimignano is a favorite. Next, you’ll need to perfect the Italian art of shoulder shrugging while waving upturned palms and saying “Allora” in a loud voice. Just make sure you roll those Rs. Now, and only now, can you repeat after me, and with real molta passione: Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. If you care to mention the vibrant shade of blazing red this bella macchina is painted, you can add that it’s Rosso Competizione. What we have here, according to Alfa, is the world’s fastest production 52
PRICE: FROM $81,590; $85,890 AS TESTED ENGINE: 2.9-LITER TWINTURBO V-6 POWER: 505 HP TORQUE: 443 LB-FT TRANSMISSION: 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC 0-60: 3.3 SECONDS TOP SPEED: 176 MPH LENGTH/WIDTH: 185/77 INCHES WEIGHT: 4,340 POUNDS WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE IT’S AN SUV THAT TRULY BELIEVES IT’S A SPORTS SEDAN.
SUV. It recently annihilated the sport-utility lap record at the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife track in Germany, covering 12.9 miles in seven minutes and 51.7 seconds. That’s fast. Very fast. While we’re bandying around statistics, how about 505? It’s the number of Italian stallions the Stelvio’s Ferrari-derived twin-turbo V-6 engine delivers. That and 3.3, which is the time, in seconds, it takes to lunge off the line and catapult to 60 mph. Yes, this thing is an SUV, with an up-high driving position, generous rear-seat accommodation, and a load area as large as a PODS storage unit. But it seems no one sent this Alfa the memo. It’s convinced it’s a sports car. From the moment you punch the big red start button quirkily mounted on the left side of the steering wheel, you know you’re in for a wild ride. The V-6 growls like an angry grizzly bear snorting through a quartet of exhaust pipes the size of storm drains. Now squeeze the brake, pull back the stubby shift lever into drive, and the whole car shimmies and shakes as if under-hood voices are shouting, “Andiamo! Let’s go already!” To feel the full accelerative forces of this pazzo Italian, twist the DNA drive mode selector to race. Keep your left foot hard on the brake, hit

the gas with your right foot, letting the revs build to 3,500 rpm, and neatly step off the brake. Usain Bolt out of his starting blocks doesn’t react this quickly. The spectacular combo of four-wheel drive, rear tires as wide as a Peterbilt’s, and those 505 chomping-at-the-bit horses come together to launch the car off the line. It’ll steal your breath, squeeze your eyeballs back into their sockets, and put a Garfield-wide grin on your face. This is no mere straight-line dragster. Where this vehicle really comes into its own is in the divine way it handles itself. The electric-assist steering doesn’t just communicate what the front wheels are doing, it sends uncensored messages straight to your fingertips. Even as the Stelvio powers hard into a turn, there’s no reduction in information coming through the helm. And it grips the blacktop as if there’s an invisible Dyson vacuum at each corner. Find yourself a twisty backroad and it’s like riding on Space Mountain. Yes, you can get this kind of performance and handling in the Stelvio’s kid brother, the four-door
Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan. But the Stelvio gives you all-wheel drive and a better view of the road ahead, as well as greater practicality and versatility. Not everything is perfection, however. While the Stelvio’s humongous brakes are sensational at hauling this 4,300-pound projectile down from triple-digit velocities, at lower speeds they grab and snatch, making stop-start commutes a pain. No prizes either for ride quality; over anything but pool table–smooth asphalt, the fidgety, jerky ride can loosen dental work. And some of the interior trim wouldn’t look out of place in a 10-year-old Fiat, let alone something priced at $81,590. Shortcomings aside, this new Stelvio Quadrifoglio is a vehicle with all the space and practicality of an SUV, but with the joyful, thrilling character of a true sports sedan. In a word, it’s just magnifico. «

A PASSION TO
COLLECT Gerald and Jody Lippes share a love of the arts, both in the community and at home By Susie Stanton Staikos | Photography by Jerry Rabinowitz
I
n 2011, the then soon-to-be-married Gerald and Jody Lippes relocated to Naples. Although originally from Buffalo, New York, the couple felt drawn to this Southwest Florida coastal gem of a city. “It was a fresh start for both of us,” says Jody. “I feel like I belong here; it’s home. It’s a place where we can give back and engage in community service.” As avid cultural consumers and benefactors, the Lippeses were also attracted to the Naples arts scene. Shortly after they

settled into their newly renovated high-rise apartment, Gerald met the director of The Baker Museum. He soon became quite involved in this bastion of modern and contemporary art, which operates as the visual arts arm of the Artis—Naples campus and organization. No stranger to this world, Gerald had dedicated 25 years to supporting the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, where he’s currently an ex-officio honorary member of the board of directors. Both he and Jody are

on the national board of the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan, and Gerald has previously served on the New York State Council on the Arts, a grant-awarding organization for the preservation, development, and education of the arts in New York. He quickly put this experience to use in Naples, serving as vice chairman of the Artis—Naples board for a year and a half and becoming a member of The Baker Museum committee.
In the family room, contemporary art sets the tone, including a painting (above), Red Grid, 2007, by Winston Roeth and a vibrant sculpture, Cypress, 2006, (opposite page) by internationally renowned artist John Raymond Henry.

A fellow arts enthusiast, Jody is also on the board of directors of the Albright-Knox. But beyond this creative calling, she finds visual delight in the natural world and animals, in particular. When she toured Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, it was “love at first sight,” she says. The institution became an immediate cornerstone of the Lippeses’ philanthropic activities. In 2017, Jody co-chaired the zoo’s first high-level black-tie fundraising gala, a black-and-white ball dubbed “Penguins in Paradise.” She’ll return to the role this year to execute a “Garden of Eden” theme. In addition to these commitments, Jody and Gerald devote a great deal of time to researching, buying, and installing a contemporary art collection spread between their Naples apartment and their summer home on the shores of Lake Erie in Ontario. Gerald credits his first tour of the Albright-Knox with jumpstarting his serious pursuit of contemporary art. “When I first started collecting there was not the concentration of galleries or dealers that there is today,” explains Gerald. “I read everything I could about contemporary art and started to visit galleries in New York City. I bought what I loved and never had an art advisor. In my early days, I had no specific budget, but I did know my limits. Today we do have a budget, which we exceed every year anyway.” The couple’s scope has narrowed, and they now focus on purchasing works by living artists. Gerald has developed an eye for edgier pieces that make a political or cultural statement; he considers the oeuvre of Mickalene Thomas, Ryan Gander, Evan Penny, and Nari Ward in that category. Jody, however, admits to a more conservative taste. “I much prefer works [that] are beautiful and easy to live with,” she says. “For me, it’s not always necessary to make a political or cultural statement to be interesting.” In the end, they find common ground. They’re both fascinated by the processes behind making art and have works that reflect that. The pieces they’ve acquired from Do Ho Suh, a South Korean artist known for his architectural, site-specific

Gerald entrusts the process of placing the works in their homes to Jody, whom he credits with having a curator’s eye. Their apartment overlooking the Gulf of Mexico provides an elegant setting for their collection of colorful contemporary works. Pieces from a variety of artists mingle with handsome Art Deco and seventeenth-century Biedermeier furniture, as well as expressive ethnic and decorative items. “The mixture is warm and comfortable and provides an interesting dimension,” explains Jody. “I enjoy curating the art objects and furniture, [and] creating a peaceful space where the objects relate to each other.”

installations, exemplify this interest. In addition to a vitrine entitled Specimen Series: 348 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011, Radiator, Corridor (2013), the Lippeses own Karma (2007), a maquette for the 23-foot-tall, bronze-and-copperplated sculpture of a standing figure with a series of increasingly smaller crouching figures resting atop his shoulders. The completed bronze lives in front of the Albright-Knox. Another commonality Judy and Gerald share is a desire to know the artists. “Having a relationship with the artist is very important to us,” says Gerald. “We are acquainted with most of the artists in our collection. It allows us insight into what drives [them] to create and where they think their work will take them. We’ve supported several of our artists by making gifts to a museum to underwrite their exhibitions.” Furthermore, they’ve never approached collecting a particular artist with the expectation that his or her work would become widely sought after. For the Lippeses, the image first must speak to their tastes, and then they want to feel an appreciation for the process behind the piece. 58

When it comes to their personal favorites, Jody prefers Mary Corse’s White Multiband (Light) (2002), a floor-to-ceiling striped motive made from sparkling glass microspheres in acrylic. “The image is peaceful,” Jody says. “Simple at first blush but upon further study, the process is complex and detailed.” Corse, who was part of the 1960s West Coast Light and Space movement, currently has a retrospective at the Whitney. Gerald does not hesitate to select Golden (Scroll 2), a 2014 work by Teresita Fernández. In addition to its innate beauty, Gerald heralds the fascinating process behind the piece, which features gold chroming and India ink on a wood panel. Other works throughout the apartment carry on this theme of artist-specific approaches to fine art. Garth Weiser created In the form of a kick in the ass and a slap in the face (2012) in his typical abstract dimensional style, using copper leaf, acrylic, and dimensional fabric paint on paper. An acrylic and latex on wood panel by Emilio Perez, titled just two ears just two eyes (2007), illustrates his signature technique of using an X-Acto knife to form textured surfaces and rhythmic movement in thick layers of earth-colored paint. Additional highlights include Relied Contained (2012), a column of bright-colored Plexiglas and powder-coated aluminum by British artist Liam Gillick, who was associated with the Relational Art movement and the Young British Artists of the 1990s. Another piece by Teresita Fernández—a long, narrow triptych in fuchsia tones entitled Night Writing (Tropic of Capricorn) (2013)—resides above the couple’s living room couch. In the dining room, Tony Oursler’s wall-mounted video installation, och-low (2014), composed of aluminum, paint, LCD screens, and a sound component, projects moving eyes and a mouth from behind yellow, red, and black face-like shapes. These great gets aside, Gerald admits there have been some missed opportunities and regrets. “In the early stages of collecting I was offered a Jasper Johns number painting and walked away over a $1,000 difference between my price and the dealer’s,” he laments. “At a silent auction in the 1970s, I bid on a Richard Diebenkorn drawing from his Pacific Series. My bid was $3,900, and I was outbid by $100.” Gerald still adores the hunt and offers some tips to new contemporary art collectors. “Begin at the art fairs. One is exposed to many different artists and mediums under one roof,” he says. “Learn what you are most attracted to and what interests you most. Establish a maximum price per object and do not worry whether the object you desire will increase in value.” All of their efforts have resulted in a prized collection that both Gerald and Jody enjoy sharing with friends and fellow art lovers. In 2016, The Baker Museum mounted “Naples Collects,” an exhibition of more than 100 artworks from 23 major private collectors in the Naples area. The Lippeses lent seven pieces for the show and hosted a dinner for board members and collectors in honor of the opening. “Naples is a community of people who appreciate fine art,” Gerald says. “We have collected objects all our lives. It essentially defines who we are.” « Clockwise from top left: Mary Corse’s White Multiband (Light), 2002, is what Jody Lippes calls a peaceful image and one of her favorites; a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Mexico creates an elegant backdrop for the couple’s colorful collection; an Art Deco monkey lamp sits in front of the bold columnar sculpture, Relied Contained, 2012, by Liam Gillick.

HOLIDAY
Photography by Vanessa Rogers
In the playful spirit of the season, we asked local designers to put an innovative and fun twist on the traditional holiday tablescape. When setting the table for your next soiree, you’re bound to find inspiration in these creative interpretations of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. —Teri Evans
SPOOKY Nights Designed by Rufino Hernandez and Jessica James, GARDEN DISTRICT OF NAPLES When celebrating this day of ghosts and goblins, break the rules and let your imagination run wild. That’s what Garden District illustrates with this hauntingly fun feast for the eyes. The centerpiece is a large candelabra, filled with white hybrid roses, carnations, large eyeballs, and wing-flapping ravens. Dining chairs are wrapped in gauze, punctuated by swirling ghost eyes, to resemble a mummy. On the table, the exquisite attention to detail spills over with individual skull salt-and-pepper shakers, chocolate-filled coffin guest favors, and teasing plates with phrases like, “Let’s get wicked” and “Stay for the spell.” The candles, which emit a warm glow, are wrapped in harlequin ribbon to coordinate with the napkins. For a more dramatic ambience, the table’s backdrop is elegantly lit in an orange hue by Lightworks Stage Productions. 62

GIVING Thanks Designed by Steven Bowles, STEVEN BOWLES CREATIVE Step back into nature with this unique Thanksgiving vignette inspired by the elements (earth, fire, water, and air) that make up the lives we treasure. “We celebrate the holiday with family and friends, and they are real treasures, but the reason we are here are the elements of life,” says designer Steven Bowles. Shades of teal represent water, copper embodies fire, and potted plants dotting the table symbolize earth and growth. Velvet pumpkins are the seating assignments, doubling as favors, while mini acornshaped salt-and-pepper shakers and a small cutting board are the bread plates for each guest. Not to be missed are the feathers adorning the velvet pumpkins, which add a spiritual element and a nod to loved ones who are missed and never forgotten. “They say when you find a feather it’s often a spirit or someone from your past who has gone on, and it’s letting you know they’re an angel,” Bowles says.

DREAM Vision Designed by Matthew Huddleston and Louis Boutier, 50FIFTY CREATIVE SERVICES
The many shades of Christmas green in this tablescape are luxuriously punctuated with elements of gold and mesh.
66
Showcasing an explosion of ethereal wonder in multiple shades of green, 50Fifty Creative Services drew inspiration for this magical Christmas vignette from Naples’ lush environment. “We wanted a natural feel, like you stepped into a conservatory, so you have the door frame and plant stands packed with Christmas elements,” says Matthew Huddleston. The dream-like design envisions Christmas bursting through the ceiling and magic pouring in, the same sense of wonder that children have as they anticipate Santa coming down the chimney with an overflowing bag of presents slung over his shoulder. Oversized ornament balls are everywhere amid a backdrop of native foliage like elephant ears and snake plants. “It encourages people not to be afraid to be outside for Christmas, like having dinners outside on the terrace,” Huddleston says. “You can bring the candlelight and sparkle and it still feels like Christmas, but our idea of Christmas in Naples.” «

Local business owners and new residents are helping the Bayshore Arts District in East Naples come to life By Cary Barbor | Photography by Michael Caronchi

ollow U.S. 41 south of downtown Naples, past where it makes a hard left, and take a right on Bayshore Drive. Never been this far south before? Or merely passed through on your way to the Naples Botanical Garden? You’re not alone. But slow down and look around. Soon, a bright chartreuse building with a cheery yellow-and-white-striped awning will come into view. That’s Three60 Market, and it’s the unofficial northern border of the burgeoning Bayshore Arts District. Keep driving south,

and you’ll spot a whimsical mural of a mermaid. Inside that structure awaits jewelry designer Amanda Jaron, 46, one of the forces behind this growing arts scene. When Jaron opens her door and steps out through the mermaid’s hair, she sees a young, artsy, affordable community where people bike to the beach. While it was evident during a visit in August that the neighborhood is not there yet—in fact, it has a long way to go—it’s also clear that it has a whole lot of potential.

Local artist Marcus Zotter painted murals at Amanda Jaron’s studio and Naples Beach and Bay Realty (below left) in the Bayshore Arts District.
Bringing in art Jaron’s neighbor Joel Toledo, 34, owns Green Door Nursery on Bayshore Drive. His family has had the building for about 30 years (it used to be a Cuban cafeteria) so he has a rare perspective on the community. “It’s completely transitioning from what it used to be,” says Toledo, who is also very committed to bringing the arts to the district. “We do a big art show, the only one in the area, twice a year,” he adds. “It’s called Art Among the Blossoms, and we feature jewelers, crafters, pin makers. We try to feature local artists, many of whom are showing their work for the first time.” Toledo aims to attract a younger crowd to the art show and the neighborhood in general. “I would hope for this area to become like Wynwood [the artsy section of Miami], with an eclectic crowd, colorful murals, and a mix of young and old. Young people don’t have an arts area in Naples. That’s my eventual goal.” Toledo may have to wait on those murals. There are two in the district currently, but the Collier County Community Redevelopment Agency has hit the pause button on approving others. After green-lighting Jaron’s mermaid and giant, colorful gardenias on Naples Beach and Bay Realty at 3200 Bayshore Drive, the group

put the brakes on future painting projects. “I saw that warehouse wall as a huge canvas and commissioned local artist Marcus Zotter to paint it,” Jaron says of the space that holds her business. “We’ve run into a bit of a roadblock on more murals. But I’m working to continue to bring art to the area. There’s very little art in the Bayshore Arts District. I want people to know that there is a movement happening here.” For her part, CRA director Debrah Forester explains that the county wants to make sure it has its bearings before moving ahead too quickly. “The Collier County Tourism Development Council is in the middle of a countywide strategic arts plan,” she says. “Bayshore has received some funding from them, and we want to make sure we are involved in their strategic arts plan. And then we will see how we can narrow it down to the Bayshore district.” Another opportunity for public art was squashed (though again, possibly only temporarily) when a developer recently backed out of a proposed Cultural Arts Village project. A 17-acre parcel of land on the western border of Sugden Regional Park along Bayshore Drive was slated to include a venue for live theater as well as apartments and condos. Collier County, which owns the land, is now reassessing its options. Its hired TOA Design Group to help update the circa-2000 redevelopment plan that, according to Forester, will incorporate feedback from the community. “We want to look at the vision for the next 20 years and decide what type of projects we want to support,” she says. The revamped plan should be going through approvals in late 2018 or early 2019.
Rebecca Maddox (right), who owns Three60 Market (top left), is also developing a much-anticipated food truck park, which she envisions as “an international food village,” in the Bayshore Arts District. Below: A rendering of the food truck park’s bar, which will have a pavilionstyle roof.
Let’s eat Unlike public art, food seems to be having an easier time coming into existence within Bayshore. Rebecca Maddox, 65, owns Three60 Market and is also developing a food truck park just across the canal from her store. She envisions “an international food village. We’ll have Greek, Italian, French, lobster rolls, fresh fish caught that day that you can get cooked to order,” and the list goes on. Some trucks will be permanent, while others will be pop-ups. And the bar in the spacious lot will have a pavilionstyle roof covering it. Maddox wants the site to have a vibrancy that includes visual art and entertainment. She plans to put 20 pilings in the canal where boaters can dock. “I’m going to ‘give’ a piling to each of 20 artists
068_BAYSHOREARTS_1018-3.indd 71
and let them design them however they like,” she says. She’ll also enlist jugglers and acrobats to wander around the venue, as well as a soprano to sing arias at the bar as the sun goes down. Maddox, who has been in business with Three60 Market since 2012, knows the district is ready for what she is offering. “I honestly have never had such a positive reception to anything I’ve done as the reaction to this food truck park,” she says. “I can’t get my car fixed, go to the dry cleaner, or talk to a customer without them saying, ‘When’s the food truck park coming? How about that food truck park?’ The anticipation has blown our minds.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2018

Right and below: Renderings of Ankrolab, a large-scale microbrewery and beer garden, expected to open later this year on Bayshore Drive, adding to the revitalization of the area.
Maddox would like to have the park open in time for season this year. “I’m 65; I really don’t need to be taking on a huge project now,” she says. “But the truth is, I love Naples, and I want to leave a gift to the community. I want to leave Naples with something better. That’s why I’m building the food truck park.” Just across Bayshore Drive, Adam Kelley, 30, is also hoping to add something new to the culinary landscape: Ankrolab, a largescale microbrewery and beer garden. “We want to be a good hangout,” he says. “We’ll have music and be family-friendly, petfriendly, you name it.” On a visit in August, the building was only a skeleton, but Kelley plans to be brewing beer and serving customers by late 2018. A Naples resident since 1998, he’s thrilled to be part of the Bayshore Arts District. “I never knew a neighborhood could be so welcoming,” he says. “I feel like I got so lucky.”
Moving in
Brian Aranowski and Jim Bixler purchased one of the first new houses on Jeepers Drive.
72
The final element an arts district needs to succeed? People to enjoy and support the art. And that’s where real estate comes in. Realtor David Goebel, 31, is betting that the Bayshore district is the next desirable area in town. He’s working with a local developer who is buying up old homes and empty lots on Jeepers Drive, and a builder who has pursued an analogous project on Van Buren Avenue. They’re constructing stand-alone, islandstyle cottages ranging in price from $399,000 to $700,000. “It’s similar to what builders are doing in downtown Naples, but the lot costs are much lower, so you get more for your money here,” Goebel says. “Also, the trend is moving away from golfing gated communities.” As of August, he had sold three homes on Van Buren and five homes on Jeepers. While the new homes on Jeepers are charming and attractive, they do sit cheek by jowl with unkempt trailer homes behind chain-link fencing. It’s a street in the midst of a stark transition. Jim Bixler, 50, and his husband, Brian Aranowski, 62, bought one of the first new houses on Jeepers in April. Now fully moved in, they say they love it. They’d lived in a gated community in North Naples for 17 years but were getting tired of the high fees. “We were just casually looking online, and we saw this house,” Aranowski says. “We liked the urban, eclectic vibe of the street.” They also appreciated the idea of a neighborhood interested in the arts. Aranowski is the founder and artistic director of the chamber classical vocal group Genesis Ensemble. Bixler, a horticulturist for Third Street South in Naples, relishes the oldneighborhood feeling elicited by the big palms lining the street. And all the new homes, including theirs, have front porches to

encourage interaction among residents. As the area grows, they look forward to a “walkable, urban neighborhood,” Bixler says. “We love the unique homes, being so close to downtown, and the idea of building an arts community.” For those invested in the district, change can’t come soon enough. “Bayshore always had the stigma of being low income, high crime, and not a great area,” says Toledo of Green Door Nursery. Going back decades, he says, “We always heard ‘Bayshore’s up and coming,’ and nothing ever happened. But now all of a sudden, it’s like an explosion. Now it’s completely changed.” «

GLENN MIDNET DESIGN WEST In Mercato
Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: For me, design is inspired by three factors. One is the fashion industry; textiles, color, and fashion trends cause interior design trends, which is why we’re proud to partner with Ralph Lauren Home at our Mercato design center. The second is nature, where I find harmony, symmetry, color, balance, scale, and proportion. Finally, I have a passion for travel. The more you are exposed to different cultures and countries, the deeper your creative well is. Q: WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? A: Design has been moving toward the integration of natural, organic elements. Contemporary, clean lines mixed with earthy, natural accents are trending. Tonal “washed’ finishes give a soft feel that mixes well with

rich, darker colors. Backgrounds are becoming lighter and more neutral, using layers of texture. Bigger outdoor kitchens, patios, and outdoor luxury items will continue to be the rage. The integration of technology with a refined design aesthetic is also in demand. Q: WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION? A: We specialize in high-end residential interior design, floor planning, furniture, custom cabinetry, accessories and installation. From conceptualizing through building, we provide turnkey design and project management. Our designers have varying styles and ideas, and collaborating helps us achieve award-winning results. We create a blend of casual luxury and timeless elegance, as seen in our contributions to Golf Magazine’s National Dream Home.

ALISON CRAIG HOME FURNISHINGS, NAPLES Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: A successful interior is not determined by the cost of its components. We are all about achieving a high-end look at a great price. Mix up your rooms with “high and low” pieces. It’s a good practice because it keeps the total cost of your room lower. It also ensures you have an interesting mix of pieces rather then looking like it was lifted out of the pages of a specific brand’s catalog. Q: WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? A: The last quarter of 2018 sees bronze and platinum imbuing furniture design with an elegant shine — from glazed linen fabrics to shimmering finishes, metal and nail trims. Reminiscent of light reflecting off the Florida coastline, platinum can be icy white or a warm shade of

cocoa, and bronze ranges from copper to patina. Mixed and matched hues, like bangles stacked together, gives metal a soft touch with posh appeal. Q: WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION? A: The design consultants at Alison Craig stand ready to help you visualize new room ideas for your home. They work with you to present new decorating inspiration and insights. With some of the best-known brands in the industry, such as Theodore & Alexander, Stanley, Henredon Leather, and more, at their fingertips, you’ll be on your way to creating the room of your dreams. JETT THOMPSON HOME Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: Travel provides my greatest inspiration. This year I’ve been from Paris to New York to the Berkshires visiting with artists and dealers who provide me with the unique mix of merchandise that we’re known for. I’ll be heading to Kenya this month where I’ll have meetings with jewelry and textile designers to create special pieces for my retail boutique. I will also be shopping the tribal antique galleries to procure pieces for clients. Q: WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? A: Wabi-Sabi is a 15th century Japanese philosophy that finds beauty in imperfection such as choosing natural materials over those that are mass produced and using

accessories that offer a functional purpose such as decorative bowls, baskets or trays. “Wabi” means rustic simplicity and quietness while “Sabi” alludes to the beauty and serenity that comes with time and age. A little less perfect and a little more authentic. Q: WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION? A: Residential interiors. We are a lifestyle boutique and design firm that showcases our love of the unique and organic, mixed with clean, classic pieces. Having a store allows our clients to come and browse, share their likes and dislikes and experience a variety of styles. This is the foundation of our design philosophy: carefully curated design tailored to the individual personality, wants, and needs of each client.

For more than three decades, Ristorante Ciao has been a familiar Naples destination. Diners will see a redecorated interior when they return for the season, but classic dishes such as shrimp and scallop risotto still highlight the menu. Chef Gianfranco Loreti cooks the Arborio rice to order with house-made stock and finishes the dish with a touch of cream and basil pesto. The popular entrée is topped with lightly seared scallops and jumbo shrimp and garnished with chopped tomatoes and artisan greens. “His philosophy is to combine traditional dishes with superfresh ingredients,” says partner Carol Rosen, “and to make them colorful, current, and pleasing to the eye.” (ristoranteciao.com)

Paradise Coast WINE & FOOD EXPERIENCE Cambier Park becomes foodie central on October 27 when the second annual Wine & Food Experience, presented by USA Today, returns to Naples. From 1 to 4 p.m., the event will concentrate restaurants, cooking demonstrations, wines, and craft beer in one place as part of a 12-city national tour. The headliner this year will be Scott Conant, a James Beard Award–winning chef, cookbook author, and veteran judge of popular TV shows such as Top Chef and Chopped. Another focal point will be The Martha Stewart Experience, a tented space featuring books and kitchen equipment marketed by the lifestyle personality herself. Several dozen local restaurants will offer dishes to sample during the Grand Tasting, including Truluck’s, Sails, Baleen, Sea Salt, Barbetella, Dorona, Kareem’s Lebanese Kitchen, The Claw Bar, Angelina’s Ristorante, and 21 Spices. Forty restaurants participated last year, with attendance nearing 2,000 people. Tickets for the Grand Tasting begin at $85. Guests may purchase VIP access for $120, which includes entry at noon, private tastings with wineries and distillers, and a VIP lounge. The Chef’s Package Experience with Scott Conant ($180) begins at 11:15 a.m. and provides a private meet-and-greet and book signing opportunity with Conant. (wineandfood.usatoday.com)

AGED TO PERFECTION Barrel-aged cocktails were popular prior to Prohibition, although the reasons were practical rather than aesthetic. Even after glass bottles became commonplace, bartenders found it convenient to have a large supply of their best-selling drinks ready to serve. With the recent boom in the cocktail culture, barrel aging has become fashionable once again. The trend found its way to Naples at The Warehouse (theware housenaples.com), which uses two five-liter barrels made from American oak. One formerly held Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select, while the other was seasoned with Woodford Reserve Bourbon. As a result, both barrels lend themselves to classic whiskey drinks.
Benjamin Forgét, general manager at The Warehouse, has also been successful with a Negroni made from Campari, Hendrick’s Gin, and Cinzano sweet vermouth. “Each new cocktail takes on aspects of the previous ones,” says Forgét. “As they age, they take on a smokiness from the barrel and acquire a more complex taste.” Meanwhile, Timeless restaurant (timelesseatery.com) in Naples currently offers two barrel-aged cocktails. The Old Fashioned combines Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Luxardo cherry with a dash of bitters and a splash of soda, whereas the Manhattan blends Woodford Reserve with sweet vermouth and orange bitters.

COFFEE CULTURE If coffee is really the new wine, then vines are sprouting across Southwest Florida. What local coffee bars have in common is a relaxed atmosphere where you can socialize with friends, check your email, or read a book while enjoying a unique brew. The local trailblazer is Bad Ass Coffee Company (thebadasscoffeecompany. com), which originated on Hawaii’s Big Island in 1989 and has won several NI Dining Awards. Named for the erstwhile donkeys that carry beans up and down the mountains, the Naples outpost specializes in the rich, fragrant Kona beans that made Hawaii famous. For relative newcomers, like mother-daughter team Nicola and Stephanie Bunnett who opened Kunjani Craft Coffee & Gallery (kunjaninaples.com) in 2016, coffee and social consciousness are one and the same. They founded the Kunjani Project to help bring clean water to residents of their native Zimbabwe, which they fled in 2007. The large, comfortable interior houses a selection of artisan coffee, teas, and baked goods, along with an array of crafts for sale to benefit the charity. A few miles north at Grain de Café (239-594-8081) on Tamiami Trail North, the coffee is a complement to croissants, pastries, homemade soups, and
salads with a distinct Gallic flair. The owners hail from Lille, near the Belgian border, and have managed to transpose the atmosphere of a neighborhood French café to a Publix strip mall, including a large outdoor seating area. For a cozy downtown hangout, don’t miss The Brick Coffee & Bar (thebrick coffeeandbar.com) on Fifth Avenue South. The Lavazza coffee is imported from Italy, and the menu features a range of breakfast sandwiches, salads, and paninis. Relax at one of the indoor tables or grab a seat on the terrace shielded from the sun by umbrellas and awnings. And if you fancy a glass of wine instead, there’s a range available by the glass or bottle.
NI ’s curated dining guide for Greater NAPLES THE LISTINGS The Naples area is packed with an abundance of great eateries, serving up food and drinks to satisfy every palate. Naples Illustrated has rounded up details on can’tmiss places for dining delights. = NI’s Dining Hall of Fame* *Dining establishments that have won three or more Dining Awards in the same category are inducted into NI’s Dining Hall of Fame.

Sous Vide PICKS UP STEAM If you’re a fan of the sous vide cooking at Kitchen41, or addicted to the Heritage Pork Chop at The French, you may not realize it’s possible to create similar dishes at home. Sous vide translates from the French as “under vacuum,” and the description is apt: Ingredients are sealed in a plastic pouch and cooked slowly in a water bath. The flavor payoff can be significant. Unlike standard cooking methods such as grilling or roasting where the heat penetrates from the outside in, sous vide cooks food at a constant, even temperature. Moisture is retained, and the meat, fish, or vegetables emerge remarkably juicy and succulent. Perhaps because it was first used at a Michelin three-star restaurant in France, many diners associate sous vide with upscale dining. However, home versions have recently been developed that allow amateur chefs to take advantage of the technology. Among the most popular is the Sous Vide Supreme Water Oven (sous videsupreme.com), with prices starting at $329. The vacuum sealer for the pouches is an additional $149, but there are deals combining oven and sealer for $499. The latest innovation for budgetconscious epicures is sous vide circulators, such as the Anova Precision Cooker 4.0 ($130-$160). The device clamps onto the side of any pot or container and includes a directional pump, LED temperature display, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. You may not need the vacuum sealer, since many users report that BPA-free plastic bags are fine for cooking operations of less than two or three hours. Locally, Williams-Sonoma carries the Anova Precision Cooker, while the Sous Vide Supreme is a special-order item. Either way, you just set the timer, mingle with guests, and reap the compliments.

VIVA Tequila
With a rise in superior offerings, tequila is more popular than ever By Mark Spivak
T Patrón ignited a thirst for super premium tequila in the United States. Its headquarters, known as Hacienda Patrón (above), are located in Jalisco, Mexico.
hirty years ago, high-quality tequila was nearly nonexistent in the United States. Tequila was the drink of frat boys, bikers, and bums, and the standard method of consuming it (downing a shot with a chaser of salt and lime) had evolved to mask the spirit’s aroma and flavor. In 1989, a serial entrepreneur named John Paul Dejoria was drinking tequila with his friend Martin Crowley. Crowley had brought two bottles back from Mexico, and the stuff was exponentially better than anything either man had ever tasted. Dejoria, who had made his first fortune as the co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems, had an idea: Why not hire a top-notch distiller, design compelling packaging, and produce the first super premium tequila? Patrón was born—and everything changed. “That first batch sold for $37.95,” says Dejoria. “Forty bucks for a bottle of tequila—imagine that!”
The birth of Patrón also coincided with the revival of the cocktail culture in America. More and more spirits drinkers embraced the notion of connoisseurship, something previously reserved for wine geeks. According to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, sales of super premium tequila have increased 805 percent since 2002. Most consumers who make margaritas or mix their tequila with orange juice will purchase a blanco (“white”) spirit that is unaged and usually bottled soon after distillation. The king of unaged tequila is probably Gran Patrón Platinum Silver ($185), which should be consumed neat for maximum pleasure. The texture is smooth, almost unctuous, with deep flavors of baked apple and almonds. A minty quality emerges on the finish, mixed with long echoes of anise. When you get into reposado (literally “rested,” or kept in oak barrels less than a year), añejo (aged in cask for one

to three years), or extra añejo (aged a minimum of three years), 40 bucks starts to seem paltry. The Gran Patrón Piedra ($360) and Burdeos ($510) are meant to be savored in a snifter, and are aimed at the type of drinker who would enjoy a high-end Cognac. Casa Noble, founded by Jose “Pepe” Hermosillo and Carlos Hernandez in 1997, is an estate distillery with the rare opportunity to control the quality of its production. In 2009, Casa Noble took a page from the bourbon playbook and released two single-barrel tequilas. The Reposado ($70) is bright and fruity on entry, with a smooth mid-palate revealing notes of citrus and baking spices. The Single Barrel Extra Anejo ($110), aged for five years in charred white oak, is rich and profound, resonating with chocolate and spice for nearly a full minute. Like high-end Cognac, premium tequila
has attracted its fair share of celebrities. Justin Timberlake released Sauza 901 as a private label in 2009; by 2014, it had become popular enough to be purchased by global giant Beam Inc. That same year, Diageo partnered with Sean “Diddy” Combs to acquire the Deleon brand. Fans of the rock band AC/DC are enjoying Thunderstruck Tequila, and Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo shares its name with the musician’s restaurant chain. The most famous celebrity tequila took on more glamour last year when Diageo bought the George Clooney–backed Casamigos. The price tag was a cool billion: $700 million up front, with the rest payable upon reaching performance targets—proof that tequila has come a long way from its saltand-lime days. «
Rande Gerber and George Clooney (above) are cofounders of Casamigos, which includes a trio of super premium tequilas made from 100-percent Blue Weber Agaves grown in Mexico.

SAGE Wisdom Ceremonial saging or smudging (terms used for burning herbs for cleansing or healing purposes) dates back centuries in Native American culture. Today, the practice has become commonplace in wellness rituals, as a meditation aid, and to encourage relaxation during a yoga session. “At the end of a chaotic day, it’s a soothing way to disperse the negative energy in the room and calm it down,” says Beth BrownRinella, owner of Goddess I Am Healing and Meditation Center, Naples, which stocks sage bundles, energy freshener mists that act as a to-go smudging ritual, and dozens of essential oils and herbs. “Different types of herbs are blended in the sage bundles for different purposes,” she says. Lavender helps with anxiety, while mugwort enhances a meditative state and promotes dreaming. “Smudging is like an email to the spirits, asking for cleansing and a new beginning,” she adds. THE LAST STRAW According to the World Economic Forum, there will be more plastic than fish in terms of weight in the world’s oceans by 2050. It is estimated that we are dumping what amounts to an entire garbage truck of plastic into our oceans every minute. Not only does it disrupt marine ecosystems, but plastic has been found in the stomachs of sea turtles and birds that mistake it for food. Feeling stressed, lethargic, or having trouble sleeping? It may be due to the EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) emitted from your cellphone, laptop, computer, Xbox, or Wi-Fi. Energydots are low-power magnets that may help bring your body’s sensors back to a natural, healthy state. These dots claim to improve sleep, increase energy levels, and reduce stress and anxiety. These are big assertions for a small dot, so I decided to put it to the test. After wearing the biodot band for 30 days, I won’t leave the house without it. Sure, I am not totally stress free, but my sleep has improved, my energy levels have increased, and my concentration has noticeably heightened. While the scientific evidence is still coming in on the efficacy of these dots, I’m not taking mine off anytime soon. The dots ($40 and up) come in several versions, ranging from a smartdot that sticks to wireless devices to a petdot that’s placed on your pet’s collar or halter. (energydots.com)

BREAST CANCER
Statistics show one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, making it the second highest killer among women behind lung cancer. The Naples community is coming together to raise awareness for early detection and funds for research during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here are several ways you can join the cause. Pull together for the cause at the Cancer Alliance of Naples’ annual Tug of Hope on October 11 at Mercato, Naples, sponsored by North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District. For a donation, attendees can show their strength against the disease and help pull a pink fire truck, plus write a note to loved ones directly on the truck. Those who can’t participate in the pull can still donate. The family-friendly event begins at 5 p.m. and includes entertainment, games, and raffle prizes. The NCH bloodmobile will also be on-site for those who can donate blood. (cancerallianceofnaples.com) Saks Fifth Avenue, Naples, will host its annual Key to the Cure campaign October 11. The shopping event donates a portion of proceeds to the American Cancer Society. (saksfifthavenue.com) Harold’s Place, Naples, will present a Burgers or Bust event for breast cancer awareness on October 19, from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be raffles, live music, and a pink specialty drink. For a $2O donation you can order any burger, any way. All proceeds benefit Cancer Alliance of Naples. (naplesharoldsplace.com) The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is a 3- to 5-mile noncompetitive walk beginning at Miromar Outlets, Estero, on October 20. Home Genetic Tests Technology has made it possible to screen for inherited genetic mutations that account for 5 to 10 percent of all breast cancer cases, according to the Breast Cancer Institute. The good news is there are quick, inexpensive alternatives to office testing that allow you to find out if you carry the BRCA gene. These notable home tests are easy to use and follow the same principles: swab, mail, and receive the results. Color (color.com) tests for BRCA 1 and BRCA 2, while CellMask Life Breast Cancer Risk Test (cellmask life.com) is more extensive, testing for BRCA 1, BRCA 2, and 13 additional genes. Both tests cost $100 and are available online.

The 41-inch square silk scarves ($80 each) were commissioned to tell a story of hope, resilience, strength, and courage from the artist’s point of view. “I was inspired by the strength of women who struggle with breast cancer, and the constant show of support from friends and family near and far,” says artist Hannah Davies of South Wales, U.K. “The lioness is a symbol of courage, reminding us that together we can beat this disease.” The Art of the Scarf Collection is available through October 31, with 20 percent of the net proceeds benefiting the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Berry Boost Acai berries are an energy-boosting, immunestimulating super food. They contain 19 amino acids and more antioxidants than other commonly eaten berries. Since the berry itself can taste a bit bitter, natural sweeteners, such as honey or dates, are often added to boost flavor. Try the Super Bowl at Delicious Raw Kitchen & Juice Bar in Naples. If you’re watching sugar, ask them to hold the dates, banana, or granola. (delraw.com)

Two wild and crazy guys are coming to Hayes Hall, Artis—Naples on October 28, for what is being billed as An Evening You Will Never Forget for the Rest of Your Life. Comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, along with the Steep Canyon Rangers and Jeff Babko, aim to take patrons on a vaudevillian musical journey as they explore their friendship and tell outrageous stories about their award-winning careers. These
longtime pals will share their kindly brand of a celebrity roast, in addition to Martin’s banjo runs and a smattering of blunt one-liners that will contribute to the hilarious cadence of the night. Prior to the performance, Martin will receive the second annual Naples International Film Festival Artis—Naples Award for his multidisciplinary approach to the arts as an actor, comedian, novelist, playwright, and musician. , a 24-year Naples resident and realtor, has a long-standing commitment to the community. As part of Bua Bell Group, under the umbrella of John R. Wood Properties, she makes a donation after every closing. The nonprofits Bua supports range from The Shelter for Abused Women and Children to Champions for Learning, as well as organizations that benefit veterans, conservation, and the arts. 1. Must-attend events: Hats in the Garden—I feel it’s the start of season; Celebrity Martini Glass Auction, a fun, giving event that supports those who have served our country; and Magic Under the Mangroves, which supports the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. 2. Best read: The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra. It’s a spiritual and easy blueprint for fulfilling your dreams. 3. Favorite jewelry designer: Ippolita, available at Saks. A close runner-up is Tamara Comolli from Marissa Collections. Both are casual and can work for every day. 4. Go-to hostess gift: BRuno’s Sugarfina treats, fun cocktail napkins, and candles. 5. What few people know about her: I’m originally from New York; I taught high school history in Pittsburgh inner-city schools and loved it; I’ve been to several Chopra Center retreats, and I walked on hot coals with Tony Robbins. 6. Signature sip: Moscow Mule. I drink it from the copper mugs passed down to me by my father. It’s cool and refreshing, but also sentimental for me. 7. Fictional hero: Wonder Woman. I bought that martini glass at the last Celebrity Martini Glass Auction. 8. Favorite local bites: Sea Salt’s New Vision Caesar Salad at dinner, and the Lobster Reuben when I am splurging at lunch.
Best advice ever received: The quality of your life is determined by the choices you make. You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond.
