High spirits

© LILA PHOTO

I

’m writing this at the end of October, trying to get into the spirit of “winter” and the holiday season despite the still-warm temperatures. I just got back from the Carolina mountains, where it was crisp and cool, which makes it somewhat easier to think about decorating my home with a seasonal vibe.... Plus, editing some of the spirited content in this issue helps too! Jules Aron put together a wonderful feature on holiday cocktails, using potent potables from local distilleries like Jupiter Rum Co., Islamorada Distilling, Munyon’s Paw-Paw, and more (page 58). Her creations like the Sugarplum Fizz and the Gingerbread Flip are so stunning and festive, you’re going to want to start your holiday tippling early! As we wind down another year, we caught up with Jupiter native Kyle Kirkwood, who just wrapped his second season racing in the IndyCar series—and what a year it was for him! Kyle drove to first place for Andretti Global in two different races, and now he’s here settling into his newly purchased home in Tequesta before next season’s series begins in March. (Good luck, Kyle!) Get to know the 25-year-old racing champ in “Need for Speed,” beginning on page 50. In The Local section, we feature a family who is so into the holiday spirit, their incredible home decorations led them to winning the top prize on a TV competition show—ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight (page 36). We also highlight some local goods to consider gifting to loved ones this Christmas (page 40) and talk to a local firefighter who recently flew halfway across the world to Oz to be part of the 2024 world-famous Australian Firefighters Calendar, which has raised more than $3 million for charity since 1993 (page 33). Oh, and if you have a chance, be sure to stop by the Maltz Jupiter Theatre this month and take in the beauty of all the twinkling trees decorated by various nonprofits as part of the theater’s inaugural Communi-TREES event, which benefits participating charities. Learn more on page 34. I hope you enjoy the issue and wish y’all the happiest of holidays! Peace and blessings,

Reflecting on 2023

KEITH LORIGAN

ow, I am amazed at how quickly 2023 flew by and what a year it has been! As I reflect upon the past year, I think about the many joyful moments as well as the strength and resilience shown by those of us who have experienced difficult times. I’m truly humbled and awed by the depth of caring and generosity in our community. Gearing up for 2024, in this issue (and the next), we highlight our Cultural Council for Palm Beach County Arts & Entertainment Guide— an absolute must-read for planning activities this season. There are so many fantastic events on the horizon, so be sure to check it out and get your tickets early! Supporting our creative arts community is such a great way to give back to those who help make our home such a wonderful place to live. A few ideas for places to visit with your family or friends over the holidays: Busch Wildlife Sanctuary’s new facility is now open in Jupiter Farms, which is a great way to spend a day. Now that the weather is a bit cooler, it’s also a good time to take a tour of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum. The views from the top are breathtaking! On the arts front, you might check out what the Lighthouse ArtCenter (and Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach) have to offer. And definitely not to be missed is the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. The renovations completed over the past few years are amazing, and the talent coming to town is fantastic. Two thousand twenty-four promises to be so chock-full of gatherings, fundraisers, and entertainment that I know I’ll see many of you out and about. And if you’d like to talk about being part of our many special advertising sections—including the Luxury Homes Real Estate Guide, Flavor Dining Guide, and Home Resource Guide—please reach out to me. I wish you all the very best this holiday season and throughout the New Year!

A Rising Star of Research in Florida Cleveland Clinic’s Florida Research and Innovation Center attracts a new generation of scientists seeking to stop the next pandemic — before it starts. For nearly as long as she can remember, Emily Speranza, PhD, has been fascinated by viruses. “To me, they’re little pockets of perfect evolution,” she says. “We might study a virus that expresses seven proteins, whereas the human body expresses 20,000 proteins. Yet viruses can completely take over us. They’re very efficient.” Dr. Speranza is a scientist at Cleveland Clinic’s Florida Research and Innovation Center (FRIC) in Port St. Lucie. A bioinformatician by training, she now harnesses big data to analyze host-virus interactions — the remarkably complex pas de deux that unfolds on microscopic dance floors between cells and viral pathogens.

“My lab is focused on what happens after you become infected with a virus,” she says. “What happens right when the virus enters, either through the lungs or the skin? How is the immune system trying to fight off the pathogen to prevent it from getting anywhere else in the body? We’re trying to improve our understanding of how these early events lead either to a good outcome, where the virus is contained, or a bad outcome, where the virus is able to spread. Down the line, this will lead to the development of therapeutics that could intervene in the early stages of infection to help the host have a better outcome.” LEARN MORE ABOUT THE IMPACT OF PHILANTHROPY At the Florida Research and Innovation Center, your support plays a vital role in our mission to make lifesaving discoveries that improve the health of the communities we serve and beyond. graduate of the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and business, 27-year-old Caden Wilson has been serving St. Lucie County as a firefighter and paramedic since 2018. He’s also pretty savvy on social media, accumulating more than 1.5 million followers on TikTok and Instagram combined (@caden_troy). Earlier this year, the director of the world-famous Australian Firefighters

3 QUESTIONS with St. Lucie Firefighter

CADEN WILSON

How did an American end up in the Australian Firefighters Calendar? CW: We live on one planet, and these calendars benefit a lot of wildlife, environmental, and conservation charities. That’s a super good message that I can take home to the States through my social media. Tell us a little bit about your experience at the shoot. CW: We shot primarily on the Gold Coast. At Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, I posed with koalas, meerkats, horses, baby deer, bunnies, goats, monkeys, and dogs. Holding a koala was a super cool experience, and I’d say I was most hesitant about the snakes! Do you have a favorite month? CW: April is Autism Awareness Month, and my older brother was diagnosed with autism. I love him, and he helped shape who I am today. I have a [puzzle piece] tattoo on my chest that I got for him. To purchase a 2024 Australian Firefighters Calendar ($17.99), visit australianfirefighterscalendar.com.

ince 1991, the World Firefighter Challenge has tested the limits of fire rescue teams all over the world. Teams compete at the annual competition in obstacle course– like challenges that simulate the physical demands required of firefighters on the job. For three consecutive years, the St. Lucie County squad achieved the highest overall team score in one of the main events—the FD Showdown—and in October, they headed to Stuart Beach to once again participate in the competition. “The Firefighter Challenge Team is the elite one percent of the fire service that has taken lifesaving and made it a sport,” says Lt. Matt Coney, co-captain of the 29-person St. Lucie team (which includes Aussie calendar man Caden Wilson). Deemed the “toughest two minutes in sports” by ESPN, obstacles include dragging a 175-pound mannequin, carrying a 42-pound pack up a tower, and hitting a Keiser Sled (a challenge that requires firefighters to move a 150-pound piece of steel by means of swinging a hammer, meant to simulate the act of forceable entry). Male and female firefighters compete in individual, team, and relay categories in timed races while wearing full bunker gear. The St. Lucie team trains at a complex on the Indian River State College campus in Fort Pierce. Martin County Fire Rescue and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue also compete in the annual event. The Giving Trees Waltz on over to the Maltz Jupiter Theatre this month to view its stunning lobby, which is filled with 20 gorgeously decorated holiday trees. The trees are part of the Maltz’s inaugural Communi-TREES event, which coincides with the theater’s run of A Christmas Carol (November 28 to December 10). The 8-foot Frasier firs were provided by Tampa General Hospital and decorated by various local nonprofits in the theme of their mission. Visitors can donate to the orgs by scanning QR codes on ornaments and also vote for their favorite tree. The winning tree will earn a $5,000 prize (provided by donor Roe Green) for the nonprofit. The trees are also up for grabs! Place a bid, and the winners will be announced December 10, following the final matinee performance of A Christmas Carol. In addition, scrumptious gingerbread houses created by the culinary team at The Breakers are open to silent bidding, and visitors are also welcome to leave gifts under the trees for Toys for Tots. “The last two words of our mission statement are ‘our community,’” says Maltz director Andrew Kato. “We want to be as inclusive of as many different types of organizations as possible.” Participating nonprofits include the Boys and Girls Clubs of Martin County, Furry Friends, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Els for Autism, and Little Smiles, to name just a few. jupitertheatre.org ❖

ommunity gardening is taking on new meaning in Martin County. A farm has opened near Palm City for locals to try their hand at cultivating vegetables and herbs for use in their own kitchens. Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County (BGCMC) were the first to turn soil here last March, with a ceremonial first plant of a 50-by-50-foot plot at what is known as Newfield Farm. The children planted peppers, eggplant, and herbs including rosemary, basil, and mint. The first harvest was in June, while Seminole pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and more were added in the fall. A monthly farmer’s market launched at the site in August, offering fresh produce and artisanal goods from locally owned businesses. Visitors to the market can

also participate in goat yoga sessions and enjoy bites from the Fork in the Road food truck, which is operated by BGCMC. The market currently hosts about a dozen vendors, with the next one taking place December 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eventually, an event barn (occupying approximately 4,000 square feet) will operate educational programming, cooking classes, demonstrations, and tastings, as well as a retail store and produce stand. Under the supervision of Agmenity farm management company—which employs farming practices void of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers to grow a wide variety of seasonal crops and help people reconnect with the food they eat—Newfield will grow to encompass more than 100 acres of raised beds and plotted plantings. The farm will serve as the centerpiece of a new master-planned community by Mattamy Homes. “Both our residents and members of the public will have the opportunity to subscribe to a farm club and do their own gardening,” says James FitzGerald, Mattamy’s senior manager of community development. The 3,400-acre parcel of land belonged to the family of economic journalist Knight Kiplinger, who has long

promoted sustainability and conservation. For the last decade, farmer John Long of Agri-Gators has cultivated more than 1,000 acres of the parcel with corn, potatoes, and other crops. The community will also feature more than 50 miles of trails that can be used for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, the majority of which lies in the Kiplinger Conservancy—1,000-plus acres south of Citrus Boulevard between the C-23 canal and Southwest Boatramp Avenue. FitzGerald says Mattamy’s intention is to stay true to Kiplinger’s values and protect the land, eradicating invasive species in the wetlands, thinning out the understory with controlled burns, composting, and protecting wildlife (including making sure gopher tortoises won’t be displaced from the property). “Seventy percent of the site is going to be preserved as public open space in perpetuity,” he says. newfieldfarm.com ❖

ost kids don’t put decorations on their wish list for Santa, but Dave Castle wasn’t like most kids. He’s been fascinated with making his yard glow for as long as he can remember. “When I was a kid, I asked for Christmas lights for Christmas,”

he recalls. “I got my interest from my uncle, who had a love of lighting.” The 43-year-old general contractor is now a dad to three who makes sure the jolly shines brightly at their Palm City household. Since 2010, Dave and his wife, Beth, have pulled out all the

The monthlong spectacular uses around 500,000 lights to create the magical sight. Over the years, the Castles have accepted donations from visitors who view their display, which they passed on to local charities like House of Hope and Elevate Hope. “For us, Christmas is about giving, not receiving,” says Dave. To be ready to flip the switch in December, Dave typically starts with builds in the summer and begins hanging lights in early fall. “I’ve been out there on 100-degree days, sweating, putting up Christmas lights,” he says. His efforts have drawn attention far and wide. Every year, droves of locals have come by to get a peek at the display—one night, Beth recalls counting 640 cars passing by. And year after year, the casting team of ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight approached the family to compete on the television show. In 2021, they finally took the leap and agreed to participate in the competition, which aired in 2022. For two days, cameras rolled as interior designer Taniya Nayak, the show’s

Five weeks later, Nayak returned to surprise the family with the $50,000 grand prize, along with a gigantic light bulb–shaped trophy, which they proudly display year-round in their living room.

“The whole neighborhood of Palm City felt like they won,” Dave says. “It was like the Super Bowl of Christmas.” Last year, the Castles’ display had grown so large and popular, they moved it to the Martin County Fairgrounds. But this holiday season, the night sky

of Palm City will be slightly dimmer, as Dave has decided to take a long overdue respite from it all. He’s passing the torch for the moment to his youngest daughter, 12-year-old Adelyn, who is creating a “Kidsmas” display at the Castle family home with her friends. ❖

CLASSIC

A father and son spent years restoring an old SeaCraft to its former glory, with modern updates that make this classic model truly one of a kind by GEORGE LABONTE

From top: the restored 20 SeaCraft out on the water; a Mercury 200 Pro XS provides the power.

Collins’ father, Randy Orr (who works in the commercial construction business), decided to take on the challenge of giving this old boat the total restoration it deserved. Work demands, along with Collins going off to college, put the brakes on the project. Weeks turned into months, and ultimately, years passed. The boat languished in Orr’s backyard in Port Salerno for more than a decade with only the fiberglass work completed. Finishing the job correctly would require fairing and paint, rigging all electrical and mechanical systems,

hroughout history, certain boat models have gained cult-like popularity for both their performance and aesthetics alike. One such model is a Carl Moesly design dating back to the late 1960s: the 20 SeaCraft. Originally designed as a 21-foot offshore race hull, this model quickly gained notability as one of the earliest center console fishing boats and introduced the world to the concept of the “variable dead rise” hull, which propelled the ride quality in choppy conditions to new heights. Over recent years, Florida has seen explosive growth in the idea of finding an old boat in disrepair and completing a total restoration. Arguably, one of the most impressive transformations ever completed on a 20 SeaCraft happened right here in Stuart, a years-long project by a father-and-son team. Chris Collins grew up boating in the area, and in high school, he took ownership of a 1984 20 SeaCraft—a dream for many teens in Stuart. The boat carried him on many fishing adventures, but an encounter with a piling one dark night inflicted enough damage to the old hull to justify significant repairs.

the fabrication of a new top, and the installation of accessories and upholstery. Each of these steps required time and resources unavailable to the pair at the time. Fast forward to the present: A graduate of FAU, 32-year-old Collins has built a successful video production and digital marketing company producing content primarily for the boating and marine industry. Among its many accomplishments, Deep See Visuals and Mission Boating produced two long-running television shows related to boats and the boat restoration market. Now, with the knowledge gained in the process and the relationship capital built in the industry, along with Orr’s craftsmanship ability, father and son resumed the project with renewed enthusiasm. The list of improvements made to this classic design is staggering. While the original hull design remains a main attraction, many features above deck have come a long way over the 40 years since she was originally built. The transformation is so incredible, anyone would

Clockwise from top left: a new bimini shade and ample pole holders; father and son out fishing on the finished boat; Simrad electronics in the console; real teak accents around the bow and throughout.

ABOUT THE WRITER be hard-pressed to recognize it as a boat of its age. Each detail—from the modern metal fabrication and AwlCraft paint with real teak accents throughout, to the Simrad electronics and Infinity audio system with Shadow-Caster LED light show, to the fully closed transom with Armstrong bracket—plays a part in transforming this SeaCraft into equal parts nostalgia and modern technology. Blending the past with the present has resulted in a showpiece that will surely turn heads for many more years to come. ❖

Need for Kyle Kirkwood had an exhilarating season on the IndyCar circuit, coming out of 2023 with two first-place finishes. We sat down with the 25-year-old to talk about his road to victory (and drive to do even better), as he chills at home in Tequesta gearing up for next season.

or most kids, their first experience behind the wheel of a car comes at 15 years old, armed with a learner’s permit and a nervous parent in the passenger seat. But Jupiter native Kyle Kirkwood started driving at the age of 5—and he hasn’t stopped since. By the time he was 15, Kirkwood had already amassed an impressive driving record in karting competitions and was well on his way to a career in racing. Today, at just 25 years old, he is an accomplished professional race car driver with two IndyCar race wins this past year alone. It was a visit to Moroso Motorsports Park in 2002 that sparked his passion for racing. “When I was 4, my parents brought me and my two older brothers out to Moroso for a drag race, and I remember watching the jet cars and just being absolutely fascinated and thinking it was the coolest thing ever,” recalls Kirkwood. That Christmas, his dad bought the three boys go-karts. “I was the only one who stuck to it,” says Kirkwood.

He spent the next three years doing laps on the karting track at Moroso (which was acquired and renamed Palm Beach International Raceway in 2008 but has since closed). “It was a hobby for me and my family,” says Kirkwood. “They would just watch me go around in circles.” One day, somebody at the racetrack approached his parents and suggested they start entering their son in races. Navigating the landscape of the racing world proved to be challenging for a family with no background in motorsports. His mom, Peggy, is an artist and founder of The New Studio for the Visual Arts in Jupiter; his dad, Cam, is in real

52

estate. “Something people don’t recognize is that most of the kids in the karting community come from a family that’s very motorsports-oriented,” says Kirkwood, who found himself competing against kids from racing royalty. “At the time, I was going up against drivers like Pietro Fittipaldi, whose grandfather was an absolute legend in Formula One.” Still, he started winning—and putting the Kirkwood name on the map in the world of racing. In 2011, a team out of Charlotte, North Carolina started sponsoring Kirkwood, picking up the cost for him to travel throughout the country racing for the team. The following year, he was awarded

I want to win more races. I want to win championships. I’m always striving for more.” –K yle K irkwood the Walldinger Racing Karting Scholarship (created by former NASCAR driver A.J. Allmendinger), which paid for a full season of racing in the World Karting Association Manufacturer’s Cup Series, as well as a spot at the Rotax Grand Nationals and SuperKarts USA SuperNationals. In 2015, Kirkwood made his first jump from karting to cars at the F1600 Championship Series, where drivers race low-powered, small open-wheel cars. In order to advance in the IndyCar world, he explains, drivers follow a ladder system. At each level, the cars get bigger and faster. Kirkwood climbed that ladder quickly, racing in the Formula 4 series for two seasons and winning the championship in 2017. He

then advanced to the Formula 3 series and won that championship in 2018. His ascent to the IndyCar circuit began in 2018 when he raced the USF 2000 series, the first rung in a three-division ladder system called “The Road to Indy.” He won and advanced to the second division in 2019, the Indy Pro 2000, and won that too. After the 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic, he came back in 2021 to win the final division, the Indy Lights, becoming the first driver in history to win consecutive championships in all three divisions. Kirkwood made his IndyCar debut in 2022, competing in all 17 races on the A.J. Foyt Enterprises team. His best performance of the series that year

was a top-10 finish at the Acura Grand Prix in Long Beach, California—though outside IndyCar, he took two first-place finishes in the IMSA Weather-Tech SportsCar Championship for Lexus, racing with the Vasser Sullivan team. IMSA consists of endurance races in which drivers race for up to 24 hours, earning points at various intervals throughout the race. He entered his second IndyCar season signed with a new team—Andretti Global—and drove the No. 27 Dallara Honda to greatness. He achieved his first NTT IndyCar Series victory in April at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. “Indy 500 is our biggest race, and second to that is Long Beach,” says Kirkwood. “This year, we had 196,000 people in attendance and I think 1.5 million [watching] on NBC. It was my career highlight.” In August, he got his second win at the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix in Nashville. But his successful season wasn’t without some

disappointments. In May, Kirkwood had just 20 laps to go in the Indianapolis 500 and was in good position for a top-five finish. Then a competitor’s car hit the outside wall and spun into his car, ripping off a back tire. Kirkwood’s car hit a barrier and flipped over, skidding upside down across the track as sparks shot out from the vehicle. Despite the frightening crash, Kirkwood came out of it without injury and chalks it up to part of the job. “A lot of things are out of your control,” he says. “You have to be willing to accept that. We had a phenomenal race. We had a chance to win the race. That’s all you can ask for as a racing driver.” His description of that race is true to how he often speaks of his racing performance—not in terms of his individual victories but as what “we” accomplished: “It is a team sport. A lot of people look at it from the outside and think it’s a driver driving a car. There’s a lot more to it.” Kirkwood is talking about the 15 to 20 people working on

his car at any given time, all of whom contribute to the success of each race. As he takes some much-needed downtime before the 2024 season begins in March (with the Streets of St. Petersburg race in Florida), he’s settling into the new home he recently purchased and renovated in Tequesta. Never one to sit still, he is spending his time off in town surfing, fishing, and generally staying active, often with his Labrador retriever, Rolly, in tow. “I grew up doing water sports in Jupiter, and I just love being on the water,” he says. “That’s kind of my getaway from motorsports, which is a very stressful environment.” As he looks forward to the upcoming season, Kirkwood reflects on how far he has come since those days of karting with his brothers. “I went to my first IndyCar race in 2007 at Homestead Miami Speedway and watched Scott Dixon win,” he recalls. “I envied him so much, and now I race against him—and I beat him on occasion.” He’s looking forward to a return to the Indianapolis 500, where he hopes to come out with a better performance in 2024. “The drive for something new, something more, never stops growing,” he says. “I want to win more races. I want to win championships. I’m always striving for more.” kylekirkwood.com ❖

Meals on Wheels is our flagship program, started in 1976. We, alone, work to ensure that our ill and/or homebound seniors who are too weak or unsteady to cook receive a hearty meal, delivered to their door. When the choice is between medicine and food; when the caregiver and spouse are both infirmed, our volunteers offer a heartfelt greeting, a wellness visit, and a friendly smile.

Blast from thePAST

S

ince its opening nearly a year ago, Circa69 American Gastropub has been the life of the party in Jensen Beach, bringing the spirit of 1969 to the area with its nostalgic interiors, open-air ambience, and overall good feels and eats. Owned by Sharfi Holdings and the vision of Ben Sharfi, the 7,000-square-foot restaurant is filled with nods to the ’60s.

Large-scale custom murals of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the moon landing, and Woodstock grace the walls. An album cover collection is displayed behind the bar, and at press time, an outdoor walk-through of all things Route 66 was in the works. The menu is quintessential American, with a hint of Florida— think center-cut filet, grilled octopus, Treasure Coast local snapper, herb-marinated lamb chops, and flatbread pizzas. “Everything

is prepared with locally grown fresh produce as well as locally sourced protein, when possible,” says Ryan Steely, executive VP and chief marketing officer of Sharfi Holdings. “Our produce is grown in Palm City at Neshafarm, another property in the Sharfi Holdings portfolio.” Michael Vogler serves as head chef. The craft cocktail menu includes nearly two dozen options, while a solid wine list and 30 beers on tap, including many local custom brews, are big customer draws. The company invested in a state-of-theart tap system that features multi-temperature cooling to make

98

sure each beer is stored and poured at just the right temperature. The indoor dining room seats approximately 80 people, with another 120 seats in the bar area. There is also an outdoor patio, which is covered by a solid lift-up glass panel. “From the dining room, the view is of the Intracoastal, and while the bar does not offer a view of the water, the overall fresh air and openness provides an outdoor feeling without being exposed to the elements,” says Steely. Circa69 is located in Jensen Beach Tech Center, a waterfront mixed-use project in the downtown area owned by Sharfi Holdings. The tech center is the epicenter of Sharfi’s “live, work, play” vision, with 60,000 square feet of residential space and 20,000 square feet of commercial space. “Our vision of creating a full campus with accommodations for our live, work, play concept needed an anchor,” Steely says referring to Circa69, which he notes is the biggest single outlet at the property. Circa69 is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 3 to 10 p.m. 3750 NE Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach; circa69pub.com; 772.405.0069 ❖

SPEND A SUNDAY ON THE FARM AT A MEMORABLE SWANK TABLE ALFRESCO DINNER

Swank Farm’s Fall Harvest Hoe Down dinner in November featured chefs Nick Dellinger, Clayton Carnes, and Rodrigo Mezadri, baker Anna Ross, and music from Phillipe Harari and his All Star Country Band.

wank Farm’s Swank Table dinners are in full swing once again, with an exciting lineup of specialty themes and visiting chefs. The season kicked off in November with the Fall Harvest Hoe Down, and upcoming dinners include Farm Market Asado (December 3), Running with the Bulls: A Night in Spain (January 21), Club Carnival, Mardi Gras (February 4), and Bourbon, BBQ, and Blues (February 18). A co-celebration of local chefs and charities, the dinner series connects guests with the ingredients that make up a dish, the Loxahatchee farm that harvests much of the produce, and the

chefs who turn it into delicious multicourse dinners. “We love watching our community experience the production that goes into every Swank Table dinner,” says Jodi Swank, who owns Swank Farm with her husband, Darrin. Hosted on Sunday evenings November to April, the dinners— which all benefit a local charity—begin with a bite and specialty cocktail. Canape stations from the three visiting chefs are each paired with Champagne or rosé selected by the farm’s sommelier, Jon Wine. The five-course dinners are then served under the gorgeous 8,500-square-foot pole barn. Entrées are prepared featuring Swank Farm produce as well as protein options like heritage pig and sheep, paired with wine. There are also partnerships in place with independent seafood and local distributors to fulfill any other chef needs. Dinner is accompanied by live music ranging from country and bluegrass to folk and disco. During the evening, guests can tour the 20-acre farm and engage in a Q and A with Darrin. “We have educated our community on the importance of local food and ‘know your farmer’ since 2002,” says Jodi. “Our dinners have grown from 65 guests in 2012 to 220 guests today. We love and enjoy what we do—but farming is one of the hardest jobs on the planet!” Get the full Swank Table dinner schedule and reserve tickets at swankspecialtyproduce.com. ❖

SEA STORY

Passing Point Sur 57” x 79”

“The sea knows no limits, makes no concessions. It has given us everything and it can take everything away from us.” – John Ajvide Lindqvist

Jane Lawton Baldridge

Baldridge’s first source of inspiration is the myriad shades of blue and turquoise found in the sea. “I can stare at it for days,” she says. She’s also intrigued by the water’s motion. “My favorite lullaby has always been the lapping of the waves on the shore or the side of the hull.” — Daniela Ghelman, Boca Raton Observer

Bermuda Triangle, 60” x 40”

We are all in the same boat, in a stormy sea, and we owe each other a terrible loyalty. —Gilbert K. Chestert
