Are you relocating to a new state?

Changing your residence to a different state has many financial implications. To avoid tax and other consequences, be sure you understand the steps you need to take before moving. Among their diverse services, The Rizzo, Apple, Schneider, and Langbert Group at J.P. Morgan Wealth Management— Wealth Partners Anthony Rizzo, Roy Apple, Jeremy Schneider, and Brett Langbert—can work with you to help minimize the risks and disruptions of an upcoming move.

Changing your state of residence?

You have to leave, really leave. Many states that rely on levying state income taxes to generate revenue are active in challenging claims by former residents that they have moved out of state and changed their tax domiciles. “In order for your move to be respected, you really have to move—half measures may leave you open to claims by your former home state that it should still be able to tax you,” says Anthony Rizzo.

What does it mean to leave?

Changing residence is a legal matter, so follow the guidance of your independent legal and tax advisors before doing anything. There are many actions you can take to fulfill the requirements of a move, so you’ll want to make a checklist to keep organized and stay on track.

Where to start?

“A good place to start is by changing your driver’s license to your new state and canceling your old license,” says Jeremy Schneider. “Register your car in your new state and notify your insurance company of the change. Similarly, change your voter registration.”

Contact us to learn more about the Rizzo, Apple, Schneider, and Langbert Group 561-694-5602 | the.rasl.group@jpmorgan.com

Are you affiliated with a religious institution? Move your religious affiliation to a local house of worship. Do you plan to buy a home, or will you be renting? If possible, sell your home in your old state. If you need to keep your home, transfer title to family members or other entities; if you’re planning to rent in your new state, ask for a long-term lease.

Keep your most valuable documents up-to-date.

“Remember to revise your estate planning documents (wills, trusts, powers of attorney, advance care directives, etc.) to reflect your new state’s forms,” advises Roy Apple. This is an essential part of keeping your tax domicile current.

Focus your economic, social, and financial activities in your new state. Move your bank accounts and safe deposit box to your new state and close bank accounts in your former state. Engage local medical professionals and send your medical records to them. Change your address with the IRS— list your new address on your tax returns. Notify your credit card companies and financial institutions of your new address. In general, focus your everyday activities in your new state.

Pay attention to timing.

Maintain a calendar to remind yourself to stay outside your former state for more than 182 days in each calendar year. Keep receipts that prove local activity in your new state. Remember, you generally don’t have to be in your new state for more than 182 days, just outside your former state. Brett Langbert advises, “The less time you spend in your former state, the less likely your old state will initiate a ‘residency audit,’ requiring you to prove where you spend the most time.”

Learn from experience. Work with the right advisor to help protect your assets. The Rizzo, Apple, Schneider, and Langbert Group at J.P. Morgan has over 100 years of collective experience helping clients of significant wealth integrate their personal goals with their financial objectives. The team, whose members hold top rankings in Forbes and Barrons, also works seamlessly with their clients’ other advisors to help ensure the complexities of significant wealth are intelligently managed over time.

The ultimate gift

In the world of monthly magazines, the holiday season means crunch time. With so many folks traveling out of town to visit loved ones, it’s that much harder to schedule interviews and photo shoots for the next couple of issues and also get December to the printer on time. It’s a joyous time, yes, but for editors it’s also one of the most stressful times of the year.

That said, it’s Christmastime, y’all! And who can be bummed about that? Deadlines aside, it means time spent with family, a spirit of giving in the air, and weeknights curled up on the sofa watching my favorite holiday spe cials (animated classics like Frosty the Snowman, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer). There’s a certain nostalgia in these silly movies that sim ply can’t be beat. Anyone remember Mr. Heat Miser from The Year Without a Santa Claus? For some reason, that little dude’s catchy song has always stuck with me!

More than anything, the holiday season is about love. And truly, the ultimate gift you can give—or get—is to be loved and to share love. Our cover story this month celebrates that premise, showcasing the Ford family and the pure joy they find in spending time together at Christmas. George Ford III is the son of the late Dr. George Ford, who was a part of the consortium that donated a parcel of land that eventually became Jupiter Medical Center back in the 1970s. George III and his wife, Susan, live in the area with two of their daughters, Christina and Danielle, who were born with cerebral palsy, and the family runs a nonprofit called Leeds Endowment that has raised more than $2 million since 2010 for charitable endeavors like the training of service animals. The couple hosted an early Christmas dinner with their family (including eldest daughter, Meghan Ford Taylor, and her husband, Carter) and pulled out all the stops, including stone crabs all the way from Joe’s in Miami and holiday decor by their friend, designer Bruce Sutka. Get a peek inside their celebration in “A Ford Family Christmas,” starting on page 44. We decided to put Susan and George on our cover this month because their loving family is so inspirational—plus, you can never go wrong with a cute dog in a Santa cap!

If you’re still looking for the perfect gift for someone on your list, we’ve got some great local ideas in “That’s a Wrap!” (page 52). And to help loosen everyone up at your holiday fete, try serving one of the tasty seasonal cocktails popping up at your favorite restaurants this season, featured in our Flavor section (page 97).

Happy holidays, peace, and blessings to you!

Celebrating memories

2022 is coming to an end, and what an eventful year it has been!

The Beijing Winter Olympics were held despite a diplomatic boycott, and Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Platinum Jubilee in February, marking 70 years on the throne—a distinction that no other British monarch has held—before her passing in September. Another loss that hit me hard was the passing of Olivia Newton-John, who once called Jupiter home. When I was younger, I so wanted to be like her. I was obsessed with her 1980 film, Xanadu, and of course, Grease

It was an eventful year we will no doubt remember, but it’s time to look forward to 2023. One way to kick things off is by getting involved with some of the area’s wonderful charitable organizations that need your support. There is no better time to start helping than now.

I hope you will take the time to flip through our special promotional Arts & Entertainment Guide, which will also be featured in our January issue, and plan a visit (or two!) to some of the many cultural hot spots in our area over the seasonal months. There are plenty of places to take visiting family members to experience the local arts scene.

I’d like to give a special thanks to all of you, our readers, for your continued support and interest in Jupiter Magazine over the past year. Our editor in chief, Michelle Lee, and the rest of the editorial team have done an amazing job bringing local content to you month after month, and I am proud to be the publisher of such a great magazine. As always, I would like to remind you to visit jupitermag.com and sign up for our weekly Insider’s Guide newsletter to keep up with all of the latest events and happenings.

I wish you all a magical December filled with memorable holidays spent with family and friends, and I look forward to seeing you around town in the new year!

Warmest,

POP Star

Michelle Rappaport still remembers the day she fell in love during a trip to Paris in 2007. This is hardly an unusual event in the metropolis known as The City of Love, but the object of Rappaport’s affection wasn’t the norm. “I saw these adorable crepe carts in Paris and thought, ‘I want one of those!’” she recalls. Years later, the Jupiter mother of two hired her carpenter neighbor to build one, and in February, she debuted her new toy at her son’s second birthday party. And that’s how Pop Carts Palm Beach was born.

The name of Rappaport’s company is inspired by her father, who passed away in 2018. “My mom’s name is Lolly, so my daughter always called my dad Pop,” explains Rappaport. The

cart can be rented for special occasions such as birthdays, baby showers, and holiday gatherings. (Downtown Palm Beach Gar dens has also featured a Pop Cart at several events.) Clients can rent the cart and decorate it themselves or hire Rappaport to cus tomize their experience with balloons, florals, signage, colored awnings, and accessories like cupcake stands and lemonade jars. She also taps other moms who run their own startups to coordi nate items like cake pops and balloon garlands.

“It’s warm and fun and makes a great backdrop for taking pictures,” says Rappaport, who is hard at work booking events for next year—and building her second Pop Cart. She envisions owning a fleet of carts someday. Prices start at $375 and include a five-hour cart rental. popcartspb.com —Valerie Staggs

Turn your podcast dream into reality

According to Brian Howie, everyone has something to say. The creator of PodPopuli, a podcast production company that opened its sixth U.S. location in Downtown Palm Beach Gardens in June, helps turn people into podcasters every day. “Have you ever had a conversation that you enjoyed?” asks Howie. “Then you should be a podcaster.”

Howie launched his first podcast, The Great Love Debate Podcast with Brian Howie, in 2015, and the show is now the number one dating and relationship podcast in the world. Since then, PodPopuli podcasts have been distributed in 67 countries across platforms like Spotify, iHeart Radio, Apple, and YouTube. The company produces 250 shows a week, and its podcasters come from all walks of life. Its youngest podcaster is Ayla Taplinger, a 10-year-old from Boca Raton who interviews people living in other countries for her podcast, Around the World

“My stepmom signed me up for a podcasting class, and I fell in love with the idea of making my own,” says Taplinger. “I recommend it if you enjoy talking to others and the idea

of having listeners from all over the world excites you.”

PodPopuli’s team of experts guide beginners through all aspects of creating a successful podcast, from choosing the right title and music, to determining the intended audience, to deciding on content and guests. “A good podcast is the intersection of passion and curiosity,” says Howie. PodPopuli podcasters pay a monthly membership fee of $495 for production and distribution.

The podcast world offers something for virtually everyone, from bacon enthusiasts to school bus drivers, but Howie says the opportunities for new shows are endless. “I’d love to see a ‘flight attendant confidential’ podcast,” he says with a chuckle. All-Stars

As 2022 comes to a close, I decided to go through everything I’ve chosen for this column over these past few months and pick out the best of the best—my “all-star” products of the year.

I’ll start with Aroma 360, a home diffuser that comes in the dreamiest scents. This Miami-based brand really knows how to transform a home into a warm, soothing oasis. My favorite scent is Chandelier, a delicate blend reminiscent of an amber floral and woody breeze. Another aromatic product I love for the home is Pura Vida’s line of candles. The South Florida restaurant is an obsession of mine for both its food and its aesthetic. And with the delicious-smelling Paradise candle you can recreate that airy vibe at home.

Kim Kardashian’s SKKN by Kim skin care line lives up to the hype. It comes gorgeously packaged and has made my skin absolutely glow. If you want a holy grail body oil, Mirigal’s high-voltage oil is the one. Celebrity makeup artist Miriam Azoulay created the line, which is organic and made in small batches.

If you’ve switched to plant-based milk like so many of us have, this handy gadget from Almond Cow is a must. With the flick of a switch, you can make your own simple, pure milk at home.

I have the perfect gift to treat yourself to this holiday season: You can never go wrong with Louis Vuitton, and I love this new monogram scarf from the iconic fashion house.

Finally, get ready to charge into those New Year’s resolutions with a fitness tracker from Whoop. It’s like having a personalized coach on your arm that is equally stylish.

Happy holidays! xo, Emily

CELEBRITY PUBLICIST JO MIGNANO LEFT NEW YORK TO START A NEW LIFE IN PALM CITY, BRINGING HER A-LIST CLIENT ROSTER WITH HER

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Joann “Jo”

Mignano loved watching celebrity entertainment shows on television. She never missed the red carpet extravaganzas and was mesmerized by the Barbara Walters specials featuring high-profile guests. “I wondered how Barbara got those guests,” remembers Mignano, now 44. Fascinated by these TV moments, she developed an intrigue of the inner workings of New York and Hollywood entertainment.

Today, Mignano represents some of Hollywood’s biggest stars as the founder of J Migs Public Relations. Operating from her home in Palm City (she moved from New York to South Florida in 2014), she represents recognizable names like

’N Sync star Joey Fatone, world heavyweight boxing champion and entertainer Mike Tyson, singer Taylor Dayne, vocal group Boyz II Men, and reality TV stars Vinny Guadagnino and Sammi “Sweet heart” Giancola (of Jersey Shore fame), among others. “Working for myself in the Sunshine State has been a wonderful journey so far,” she says of the past eight years spent living here.

Mignano studied public relations and advertising at St. Francis College in Brooklyn but dropped out after two years to gain experience in entertainment public relations while supporting herself in retail. In 2000, she began work at Momentum Worldwide, part of the parent organization McCann Worldgroup. While continuing to take

college courses at night in pursuit of a degree in communications, she worked for Momentum’s corporate clients like American Express and Best Buy, as well as others. “I did event marketing for Sheryl Crow and Sting concerts,” she says. “I loved it, and when I was promoted, I quit school completely to pursue my career.”

Through hard work and forming important connections in the heady world of entertainment publicity, Mignano landed a job at PMK/HBH, one of the top PR firms in the country at the time led by powerhouse publicists Leslee Dart, Lois Smith, and Pat Kingsley (whom, coincidentally, Mignano wrote a paper about during her early years in college). This role allowed her to gain crucial experience as she worked alongside the agency’s top publicists, like Jill Fritzo, with the top-tier celebrity talent PMK handled including Rosie O’Donnell, Billy Crystal, and Sharon Stone. “I learned so much from Jill about how to protect my clients and get them enviable magazine covers and international exposure,” says Mignano.

She rose to senior account executive, managing and expanding the firm’s sports division with clients like Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, and NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman, and she developed publicity campaigns for Rosie O’Donnell and Australian singer Delta Goodrem. “I had to be on my toes 100 percent, attending

premieres, talk shows, and red carpets,” she says. “I had a great relationship with Rosie [O’Donnell] and met many people. But I would often work 12 days straight. It took a lot out of me.”

She left PMK to become vice president of entertainment and lifestyle at FYI Brand Group, where she developed publicity campaigns for Mike Tyson, singer Jason Derulo, rapper Fabulous, producer Sean Garrett, and the late actor Michael Kenneth Williams. Then came a six-year stint leading the entertainment division at Krupp Communications before she launched her own agency, J Migs, in 2017, bringing many of her existing clients—like Tyson—aboard.

“Jo prides herself on her business being personal,” says Mike Tyson’s wife, Kiki. “We have worked with her for 15 years through ups and downs, and she has always shown the same passion, compassion, and dedication to Mike and his family. We are grateful to still have her on our team.” Joe Mulvihill of Livewire Entertainment, who manages clients Joey Fatone and Boyz II Men, shares a similar sentiment: “Jo is more than a publicist. She is family!”

Mignano’s career highlights include witnessing Tyson perform in his 2012 one-man show Undisputed Truth on Broadway and then becoming a best-selling author, assisting Boyz II Men as they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and help ing rocker Bret Michaels [of the band Poison] add entrepreneur and motivational figure to his résumé.

Having visited Florida many times throughout her life (“I’ve always loved Florida,” she says), Mignano finally decided to make the move south in 2014. Leaving the Big Apple for Palm

City hasn’t slowed her business at all. She is the same hardwork ing publicist who loves her career and dotes on her clients. “I can work from an igloo in Alaska,” she says. “All I need is a phone and a computer. I’m like an actor on call—it’s not a nine-to-five job. I actually care about my clients.”

When not working, Mignano enjoys spending time with her son, 10-year-old Billy, doing things in the area like swimming at the beach, dining around the Treasure Coast (favorite spots include Townie’s Tavern, Hudson’s on the River, District Table & Bar, and 1000 North), going on staycations in Hutchinson Island, and visiting Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Orlando Resort. “I have an amazing career and a wonderful son,” she says. “I love what I do and do what I love.” ❖

Built to PERFECTION

Palm City resident Joe Paskoski Sr. has a lifelong history of South Florida boating experience ranging from building airboats for hunting to buying and overhauling a wide range of fishing boats. According to his son Joe Jr. (whose Egret was featured in this magazine about a year ago), his dad has always been a hands-on guy with the ability to fix, build, and rig anything that floats or runs. Subsequently, the pair have always enjoyed boating together on Joe Sr.’s latest completed project boat.

When he retired from the lumber business a few years ago (he owned Florida Cypress & Fence for more than 30 years), Paskoski decided it was time to treat himself to something special. His last boat would also be the very first boat he would purchase brand new from a custom builder—and it made perfect sense that

he’d land on Ben Sheaffer’s doorstep. Sheaffer, owner of Sheaffer Marine of Tampa, is also a hands-on guy and, like Paskoski, he is a perfectionist from the school of thought that suggests “anything worth doing is worth overdoing.” The combination of Sheaffer’s design ability and work ethic, paired with what would prove to be the perfect hull style for Paskoski’s boating require ments, resulted in a purchase order for a custom Sheaffer S-240V.

The S-240V is available in a number of configurations, and for Paskoski’s style of fishing, a ¾-tower full molded hard top with second station controls was just the right fit.

For electronics, Paskoski opted for a pair of Simrad NSS evo3S units—a 12-inch display below and a smaller slave unit in the tower. To assist with navigation on the St. Lucie River before first light, a Sionyx Nightwave night vision camera was integrated into the Simrad display. For quietly stalking fish on the beach or fishing around bridges and docks, a Minn Kota Ulterra 36V trolling motor was bow mounted. And for power, she features a Yamaha F300 mounted on a Porta Bracket jack plate.

The clean layout and simplicity of this classic West Coast–style guide boat combined with her sweeping, elegant lines draws admiration everywhere she goes. And for Paskoski, when it came time to put the building of his dream boat in someone else’s hands, there could not have been a better result. ❖

THE EQUESTRIAN HOTEL AT OCALA’S WORLD EQUESTRIAN CENTER PUTS YOU IN THE HEART OF THE HORSE-CIRCUIT ACTION

If you’re a horse-show enthusiast or on the sup port team of a competitive equestrian, you may be used to long hours on hard bleachers or grass, lackluster food, and facilities that might not be best described as “glamorous.” The World Equestrian Center (worldequestriancenter.com) and its show piece, The Equestrian Hotel (equestrianhotel.com), are here to change all that.

Located at the west end of Ocala amid horse farms and sprawling golf communities, the 380-acre com plex rivals—and in many cases exceeds—Wellington International (where the Winter Equestrian Festival is held) as the epicenter of equestrian competition. With multiple indoor and outdoor arenas, the WEC is equipped for grand-scale competitions on the pro and collegiate levels. Almost every dis cipline, from dressage and hunter/jumper to Western pleasure and reining, has a home here, and an expansive polo facility is currently under construction. Beyond equestrian, there are fa cilities for sporting events like volleyball, cheerleading, and even a national-level dog show.

In the middle of it all—literally—is The Equestrian Hotel. It’s logical to assume that The Equestrian accommodates compet itors and their entourages, but that’s only part of the picture.

Nearly half of the guests of the 248-room hotel are either horse lovers who enjoy the energy and spectacle of the sport or travel ers looking for a luxury vacation with an unusual spin.

Lounging in an elegant suite while watching a dressage com petition beyond a picture window is definitely not your everyday hotel fare. The Equestrian puts you in the heart of the action without sacrificing the comforts and style of a high-end hotel. Marble bathrooms, haberdashery-inspired fabrics, and elevated classic design are all accommodation hallmarks, but it’s the bird’s-eye view of the sporting events—like your own private box!—that sets the rooms apart.

The public places are opulent but restrained. The lobby blends demure elements such as panel molding and mahogany millwork with glitzy touches like Swarovski crystal chande liers and unapologetic strokes of gold. Natu rally, equine references—from horse-head lamps to stirrup drawer pulls—are everywhere. The showstopper here is undoubtedly the floor-toceiling fireplace, but don’t miss the dog paintings that decorate practically every square inch of wall space on the ground level. It has to be one of the biggest collections of dog art anywhere.

On the dining front, the big story is Stirrups (stirrupsocala.com), as much for its fine-dining menu as its terrace overlooking the Grand Arena. Dine on prime steaks or Southern fare like summer corn hushpup pies and black-eyed pea salad while watching equestrian events just steps from your table. If you can snag a seat at the Yellow Pony (yellowponyocala.com), jump at the chance. This buzzing gastro pub is all about its bourbons and whiskeys, but its Tatanka Blue bison burger is the stuff of leg ends. Order it with a side of garlic Parmesan fries and atone later.

It’s easy to make a weekend of exploring the hotel and show grounds, but the surrounding area is compelling in its own right. Ocala is an outdoor enthusi ast’s playground, with such attractions as Ocala National Forest (fs.usda.gov) and some of the state’s most beautiful springs. Closest to the WEC, Rainbow Springs (visitrainbowsprings.com) is a popular spot for tubing and swimming (that water!). A bit farther but worth the drive, Juniper Springs (fs.usda.gov)

offers family-friendly, prolific snorkeling in crystal-clear water. For adrenaline seekers, The Canyons (zipthecanyons.com) is a scenic and challenging spot for zip-lining (including a full moon adventure). Opt for the Big Cliff Canyon tour and fly over lakes, treetops, and canyons—one of many bucket-list experiences that can be checked off during a stay-and-play at The Equestrian. ❖

A Ford Family Christmas

Holiday decor, fine food, and endless family fun define the coastal Christmas party hosted by Susan and George Ford III at their waterfront home

Susan and George Ford III, Christina Ford, Danielle Ford (sitting), Carter Taylor and Meghan Ford Taylor (standing), golden retriever Chaucer (the second family dog, London, is not pictured).

For Susan and George Ford III, celebrating Christmas with the fam ily is one of the most important times of the year. Both grew up in families that always made holiday time a season to remember. “I don’t enjoy anything more than having everyone together at Christ mas,” says Susan, who was born and raised in Vermont. Now the parents of three grown children relish special moments together dur ing the holidays in the couple’s waterfront Jupiter-area home, which they share with two of their three daughters, twins Christina and Danielle Ford, 34, and the twins’ service dogs, Chaucer and London. The Fords’ eldest daugh ter, Meghan Ford Taylor, 39, lives with her husband, Carter, in West Palm Beach and also enjoys family time with her parents and sib lings at Christmas.

Susan’s holiday time memories in Vermont include snowmobiling up and down moun tains, enjoying a blazing fire, and feasting on turkey, homegrown turnips, squash, beets, and her mother’s delicious pies. “I love all of my winter memories in Vermont, but it wasn’t Christmas for me until I saw It’s a Wonderful Life on TV,” says the Ford family matriarch, who has transferred her allegiance to tropical holidays since moving to Palm Beach County in 1980. “I now enjoy our coastal outdoor Christmas celebrations.”

Susan’s husband, George Ford III, is the son of Dr. George Ford, the late prominent area orthopedic surgeon who was part of the con sortium that owned a retirement community that became the basis for Jupiter Medical Cen ter. When the community closed in 1971, the consortium bought it, then sold 600 acres east

45 DECEMBER 2022 | JUPITER

of the railroad tracks to Alcoa for Jonathan’s Landing and do nated the remaining 30-acre parcel for a medical center. The parcel included the original Jupiter Medical Center Home Health and Pavilion buildings. Eventually, through financial help from a few Jupiter Island residents, Jupiter Medical Center was cre ated and opened in 1979.

Not interested in pursuing a career in medicine, George founded Leeds Custom Design in 1999 to create cabinets for the clients of his Palm Beach estate home painting business. He also founded a construction business, Seabreeze Building, and has been active in statewide public issues like advocating for workers’ compensation benefits.

Like his wife, George also fondly recalls his childhood Christ mas celebrations. “Since Dad was always on call with work when I was growing up in North Palm Beach, our parents loved to take all six of us kids to Petite Marmite or Testa’s (both closed now) in Palm Beach for Christmas Eve,” he says. “On Christmas Day, Mom made turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy for the family. Then, after we opened gifts, I would rush outside to swim and surf.”

Those memories prompted George to carry traditions forward

during the holidays with his own family. “Christmas Eve is Christmas for us,” he says. “We usually have our kids here that night, and we open gifts and serve stone crab, turkey, rack of lamb, cookies, key lime pie…. We put all of our energy into it. I even drive to Miami Beach to buy the stone crabs at Joe’s. We have a tight-knit family and always have a good time.”

When Susan and George recently invited family and a few close friends to their holiday-decorated Bermuda-style home for vibrant conversation, laughter, and a festive pre-Christmas dinner, the vibe was light and merry. “I love getting together to celebrate with the family,” says daughter Meghan, an architect who cofounded the West Palm Beach firm Tralongo & Taylor. She also handles projects for her father’s firms, including a renovation of the landmarked historic Duck’s Nest in Palm Beach, and designed the architectural interiors of her parents’ waterfront home.

Fashionably clad in a Charlotte Kellogg pink and white striped blouse, white pants, and Chanel shoes, Susan greets guests at the door and shows them to the open living/family room and covered breezeway/loggia overlooking the pool, spa, firepit, dock, and Intracoastal.

George, smartly attired in a green Maus & Hoffman shirt, blazer, and white slacks, serves guests the night’s two signature drinks: frothy cranberry martinis with sugared cranberry and rosemary and eggnog cocktails with a cinnamon sugar rim and cinnamon stick garnish. Appetizers include a colorful charcuterie board of imported artisan cheeses, olives, sliced fruit, red grape clusters, and Italian meats with crackers.

Guests naturally gather around the beautiful indoor Christ mas tree (from Christmas Etc. in West Palm Beach), which was trimmed by renowned designer Bruce Sutka, a longtime family friend and a guest at tonight’s soiree. “My inspiration for the tree was aquatic, reflecting the home’s open water view,” says Sutka. “I used ornaments and trinkets in varying shades of blue, green, and turquoise with gold and silver accents and topped it all with palm fronds.” Sutka is also the designer behind the Ford family’s annual Party with the Pack charity event, which

raises money for Leeds Endowment, an organization founded by the Fords to help people with disabilities by providing resources they need to live healthy, pro ductive, and independent lives.

George and Susan, whose twins were born with cerebral palsy, are advocates for giving back to the community. Leeds Endowment has raised more than $2 million since its 2010 inception, with all monies going to local charitable endeavors, including the training of service dogs. With help from daughter Danielle, who works at NextEra Energy, Susan heads the Leeds fundraiser held every November in West Palm Beach.

“The Fords are genuinely good people,” says Sutka. “They have a strong work ethic and truly care about others, which is obvious from their charity work. Creating Christmas decor for them gives me serious joy.”

For this evening’s dinner, Sutka transformed the covered breezeway/loggia area into a casually elegant Christmas scene. A second Christmas tree, which he created using Ford family ornaments in red, gold, and green, stands next to a vignette of orchids in white and deep pink from Exotic Plantscaping & Nursery in Lake Worth. “The pink adds a pop of color to the tropical holiday setting,” says the designer.

charger beneath white dinner and butter plates by Villeroy & Boch. Classic, clean-lined crystal goblets, Parisian-inspired flatware with gold-banded handles, and white napkins tied together by a clever pair of gold napkin rings in hammered metal and cord complete the table setting. As a centerpiece, Sutka combined starfish, seahorses, colored balls, and garland that looks as if it is growing underwater and moving with the tide. “I brought in beach colors and themes that worked magically for dining and also played off of both Christmas trees,” he says of the table.

For the food, Susan turned to another friend, James Bartle, owner of SandyJames Fine Food & Produc tions in West Palm Beach, who catered the dinner and appetizers. “I have been friends with Susan for 40 years and greatly respect the Ford family’s work with Leeds Endowment,” says Bartle. The dinner was prepared by Chef Julio Taveras and his assistant, Israel Reyes.

On the menu is a Sconset salad (Bibb lettuce, dried cranberries, Maytag blue cheese, candied walnuts,

and cranberry vinaigrette), whole roasted turkey, jumbo stone crabs, roasted New Zealand crown roast rack of lamb, candied rainbow carrots, potatoes au gratin, green beans almondine, sweet potato soufflé, dinner rolls with whipped herb butter, and cranberry bread with cranberry butter. “Susan wanted a casual yet upscale traditional Christmas dinner,” says Bartle. For dessert, guests nosh on rose apple tarts, Chan tilly cream coconut cake from Kitchen in West Palm Beach, and decorated Christmas cookies.

As the Fords and their friends wind down the evening, Wilhelmina Stanton, a longtime friend of daughter Christina, sums up the atmosphere per fectly. “The food is always wonderful, and it’s just so much fun to be in the Fords’ home at Christmas time,” says Stanton, 39, who is Christina’s partner in Thresher Aquatics, a nonprofit they founded to help people with disabilities learn to scuba dive. She con tinues: “The Fords are so great, and being around them at Christmas is like being with family where everyone gets along.” ❖

SIMPLE HOLIDAY SIPS

’Tis the season for festive cocktails, and lucky for us, northern Palm Beach County has an array of celebratory tipples to try at local haunts. The cocktail menu at 1000 North includes fun and easy-to-mix holiday sips like the ClausMopolitan created by lead bartender Breanna Brady. The drink blends Pama Pomegranate Liqueur, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and cranberry and lime juice and is presented in a glass ornament. Imbibers then pour the cocktail into a martini glass, which is garnished with pomegranate seeds, a rosemary sprig, and a candy cane. 1000north.com (Turn the page for more tasty libations!) –Melissa Puppo

MAKE IT AT HOME:

2 ½ oz. Tito’s Handmade Vodka ¾ oz. Pama Pomegranate Liqueur ¾ oz. lime juice

¾ oz. cranberry juice

Combine ingredients in a shaker and shake well. Strain and pour into a glass ornament. Fill a martini glass with pellet ice and top with pomegranate seeds. Place ornament inside the martini glass, garnish with a rosemary sprig and a candy cane, and serve.

PEAR PRESSURE

At PGA National Resort’s three on-site restaurants and lobby bar, Director of Beverages Alexandra Dupuis is crafting some new, tasty cocktails for the holidays. One not to miss? The Pear Pressure, available at The Butcher’s Club “It offers a light start and a refreshing finish using baking spices, pear, and cinnamon,” says Dupuis. pgaresort.com

MAKE IT AT HOME:

1 ½ oz. house-made pear syrup (recipe below) ¼ oz. house-made pumpkin spice (recipe below)

2 oz. Herradura Reposado tequila

½ oz. lemon juice

To make the pear syrup: Mix 1 part sugar with 1 part water and 5 chopped pears. Bring to a simmer on stovetop. After a few minutes, strain over a cheesecloth. To make pumpkin spice: Combine 1 cup almond milk, ½ cup pumpkin puree, 1 tablespoon honey, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon clove in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring regularly, until heated through and very fragrant (3 to 5 minutes), then fine-strain. To mix the cocktail: Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, shake well, and serve over fresh ice in an old-fashioned glass.

WINTER MULE

The classic Moscow mule receives a holiday revamp at Farmer’s Table North Palm Beach, thanks to General Manager Donna Richards. The Winter Mule was inspired by the rich flavors of the colder months and highlights cranberries, which are abundant this time of year. “The organic rosemary garnish was grown in the restaurant's on-site garden and picked at the peak of freshness,” says Richards of the cocktail’s finishing touch. dinefarmerstable.com

MAKE IT AT HOME:

1 ½ oz. cranberry-infused vodka

1 ½ oz. ginger beer

½ oz. cranberry juice

½ oz. fresh lime juice

Rosemary sprig, fresh cranberries, and lime wheel (garnish)

Combine ingredients in a shaker and shake well. Pour over rocks and garnish with rosemary sprig, lime wheel, and three cranberries.

SPICED HOT COCOA

Over at Evo Italian, Chef Erik Pettersen and his team have whipped up an adult version of a classic favorite: spiced hot cocoa. Pettersen describes the drink as nostalgic because it brings him back to his childhood in New York. “Every winter, we waited for the snow— and with the snow came my mom’s homemade chocolate,” he says. “We created this cocktail to evoke that holiday feeling you had as a child but with an adult twist.” evoitalian.com

MAKE IT AT HOME:

1 ½ oz. Drambuie

1 ½ oz. truffle milk chocolate milk

Whipped cream Pumpkin spice

Pour Drambuie into a coffee glass with hot truffle chocolate milk and stir. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin spice.
