Wild about nature

The title of this letter says it all—it’s the theme of this issue, and exactly how I feel! That’s why I love working on our March issue every year. It’s packed with all the outdoorsy stuff that makes me so happy....

Let’s start with this month’s photo feature, “Underwater Awe.” Beginning on page 58, we showcase a small sample of work from three local photographers who find beauty beneath the sea. Diving isn’t my thing (it’s a silly fear I should really overcome), but I’m fascinated by the reality that there is an entire other world happening underwater, marine creatures living their dayto-day lives mostly unseen by us. James Ferrara, Laz Ruda, and Cassandra Scott witness the secret lives of sharks, turtles, whales, squid, tropical fish, and more and capture some pretty amazing moments—see for yourself!

To shoot our gorgeous fashion feature this month, we camped out in Jonathan Dickinson State Park at the new Timberline Glamping tents. If you haven’t heard about them and you like the outdoors, I highly recommend checking them out. I cannot wait to spend a weekend there soon! Glimpse our fashion story, “A Separate Peace,” on page 66 and turn to The Local section on page 35 to learn more about Timberline. Also in The Local, don’t miss our story on The Wild Dolphin Project (“Social Experiment,” page 38), which celebrates its fortieth anniversary this month with a gala March 15. If you’re interested in attending, you can get tickets at wilddolphinproject.org March is also Women’s History Month, which felt like the perfect time to spotlight Kellie Gerardi, who graces our cover. Kellie is a Jupiter mom and bioastronautics researcher who just so happens to have gone to outer space a few months ago. It doesn’t get much wilder than that! Kellie’s accomplishments are an inspiration to young women and girls, and I hope you enjoy reading her story, “Flying High,” on page 52.

Peace and blessings,

Behind the S cene S

Marching on

Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to relax on the patio with the new issue of Jupiter Magazine. Our editorial staff works hard to bring our readers interesting features, beautiful photos, and new ideas for things to do with friends and family who come to visit.

March is one of my favorite months here. The winter was chilly this year, thanks to El Niño, which we haven’t seen since the winter of 2018-19. The lower temperatures were a refreshing change, but I’m happy to see the mercury rise and eager to let the rainy, gloomy days give way to sunny spring days. We shouldn’t complain when friends and family up north had it so much worse, but I’m ready to get back to the beach and take a dip in the pool!

In this issue, as well as our July/August issue each year, we include a special advertising section, the Private Education Guide, where we showcase what local schools have to offer. If you know of a school that should be included, please let me know. The same can be said about the local businesses highlighted in our Home Resource Guide, which appears in seven issues a year, helping us care for our homes’ interior and exterior needs.

February saw some great events that Jupiter Magazine was proud to support, including the Bella’s Angels Clay Shoot (bellasangels.org) and the Hobe Sound Festival of the Arts (hobesound.org). This month, I’m excited to check out Lighthouse ArtCenter’s Plein Air Festival March 3-9 (lighthousearts.org/pleinair) The magazine is always eager to support and sponsor great local events, so reach out to see how we can partner with your event. Also be sure to sign up for our weekly Insider’s Guide newsletter on our website (jupitermag.com) to stay in the know about all the great things happening so you can get your calendar organized and tickets purchased.

Next month’s issue is our annual tribute to foodies, and we have special advertising opportunities for chef profiles and, of course, our regular Flavor dining guide. We’re also excited to bring back our promotional Wedding & Party Planning section in April and September, another great chance to highlight local providers. Take a moment to enjoy some outside time in March, and I hope to see you around town.

GLAMP IT UP!

Do you love sleeping under the stars in the great outdoors but also prefer a little extra comfort? At Timberline Glamping, an elevated camping experience in Jonathan Dickinson State Park, owners Zachary Graeve and Amanda Kyle will be your camping concierges.

In November, the married couple erected six luxurious tents, each the size of a small studio apartment, in the Pine Grove Campground Loop at the Hobe Sound park. The boho-chic accommodations come in three configurations—a king bed with two sets of bunks, two queen beds, or a queen bed with one set of bunks—all raised on a deck so you’re not sleeping on the ground. Amenities include fresh linens, pillows, a mini fridge, a Keurig coffee maker, and two hammocks. Plus, they’re temperature-controlled, so bougie glampers won’t sweat in the Florida heat.

Outside, the campsite includes a firepit, a charcoal grill, string lights, two camping chairs, and a picnic table. Just bring clothing, food, and sporting equipment if you plan to take advantage of the many amenities the park has to offer—including biking,

hiking, birding, or fishing and kayaking on the Loxahatchee River—and leave the prep, setup, and cleanup to Timberline. “If you’ve ever thought about camping but felt it sounded a little bit daunting, this is definitely a way you can dip your toes in the water,” Graeve says. Timberline can customize the experience to include firewood, s’mores kits, extra chairs, lawn games, a pop-up screen enclosure outdoors to keep bugs away, and more.

Timberline Glamping was founded in 2018 by a Georgia couple and operates franchises in Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, and Florida. Graeve and Kyle’s Jupiter franchise is the third in

Home to a biologically diverse ecosystem of approximately 4,000 plant and animal species, the Indian River Lagoon spans 156 miles, encompassing 40 percent of Florida’s east coast and spreading across two climate zones. To help folks experience everything it has to offer and learn a little something along the way, Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute offers 90-minute narrated tours from its Fort Pierce campus every Friday and Saturday.

“It’s a unique opportunity to visit an oceanographic institution and go out on this floating laboratory to learn directly from marine scientists, see what tools they use to study the ocean and the lagoon, and get a look at the wildlife from a totally different perspective,” says Gabby Barbarite McHenry, director of outreach and engagement at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. The tours first launched in January 2020

Florida (the others are located in Sarasota and Tampa). A couple since their college days at the University of Colorado Boulder, they have long shared a love of hiking and camping, but when they had their son, Tyler, they found they needed a few more amenities to make camping comfortable with a child. After a visit to the Timberline site in Tampa, they decided to open their own franchise and settled on Jonathan Dickinson State Park.

During the week, guests are welcome to book a campsite for just one night, but there is a two-night minimum for weekends and holidays (and a maximum stay of 14 days). For now, glampers have access to bathrooms maintained by the park, but Timberline hopes to add plumbing and private bathrooms with a shower, toilet, and sink to several of their tents next fall. Eight guests are allowed per campsite, and dogs are also welcome (two furry friends per tent). Accommodations start at $149 per night; jupiter.tlglamping.com; 561.230.3330

but were short-lived because of COVID. They resumed last June and now operate year-round.

Led by a Coast Guard–certified boat captain and narrated by an FAU graduate, the tours take place on the custom-built Discovery pontoon boat equipped with a remotely operated underwater drone that provides a fish-eye view of what’s happening below the surface of the water. Seat-back screens display educational content relevant to what the guide is discussing, ranging in topics from water quality to seagrass beds to various habitats and wildlife. Binoculars are available so passengers can get a better view of wildlife encountered on the journey, including birds, manatees, dolphins, and stingrays.

The cost of the tour is $40 per person, and up to 30 guests are allowed per trip. Private charters are also available. For more info or to book a tour, visit fau.edu/hboi/bookatour or call the Ocean Discovery Visitors Center at 772.242.2293. —Paige Feigenbaum ❖

local conservation group has been studying the behavior of dolphins for 40 years

Before Dr. Denise Herzing had “Dr.” affixed to her name, she was a young girl fascinated with the animal mind and an admirer of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Cynthia Moss. “All these women had planted themselves in a natural environment to observe a nonhuman animal society,” says Herzing. “I thought, ‘I could do that with dolphins.’”

At The Wild Dolphin Project, she has been doing just that since 1985. Herzing started the project in Jupiter and now runs the org out of North Palm Beach. Every summer, her team of researchers, students, and volunteers observe and report on dolphin communities in the shallow Bahamian waters. The rest of the year, they identify species off the coast of Palm Beach County. Their research has led to a rich baseline of information on Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins, which they have shared with the scientific world and disseminated in mainstream

media outlets like National Geographic and NPR. “Ours was the first group to really focus on the Atlantic spotted,” says Herzing. “We’ve been able to track the same individuals over decades and watch them grow up, have babies, and become grandmothers.” Wild Dolphin has also been involved in the rehabilitation and release of injured dolphins. Here, Herzing shares some facts about these friendly creatures.

They are well trained in socialization. Early in life, spotted dolphins learn everything from foraging to courtship from watching their mother. Once they move into “juvenile groups,” they chase fish together, learn how to fight, and start interacting with older dolphins in the community, says Herzing.

Mothers give birth every three to four years. A female is typically

impregnated for the first time around age 9 or 10 and can have 10 offspring during her lifetime (which spans about 40 years; males often live into their early fifties).

For males, age has its advantages. Wild Dolphin discovered a noninvasive technique for collecting fecal matter that has allowed them to gather DNA for paternity tests. “We know that older males in the community sire the most offspring,” Herzing says. Although younger males often fight and compete for females’ attention, they seem to just be rehearsing for future conquests. Says Herzing: “They rarely sire offspring.”

They are being displaced. In 2013, Wild Dolphin observed a food crash that led to the movement of half of a pod’s members and has been studying how the displaced individuals adjust to local dolphins in their new home. Not to mention the big threats they face from overfishing, pollution, and net entanglement. “Humans have to become more sensitive to how we do things,” says Herzing. “We have to keep thinking about creative new ways to help the natural world.” ❖

ANNIVERSARY GALA

BREATHE SOME FRESH AIR INTO YOUR ENTERTAINING ENDEAVORS BY LETTING NATURE TAKE CENTER STAGE. HERE ARE 5 SIMPLE WAYS TO PULL TOGETHER A SWANKY OPEN-AIR SOIREE

FIND THE PERFECT CANVAS.

A party’s location is a crucial component when it comes to creating the right vibe for your event. There are so many gorgeous spots to consider, from beaches to parks to your own backyard. If you go that route, just remember that all the details are up to you—and success doesn’t hinge on the location alone. How you use your chosen location is equally important. Consider how you will set everything up, with the goal of achieving a good flow. Imagine how guests will move from one party element to another and where they will congregate and/or sit. Of course, you can also outsource the logistics to an expert by choosing a private outdoor venue with built-in panache and experience. White Trail Flower Farm (whitetrailjupiter.com) is a charming, 25-acre, family-owned flower farm in Jupiter filled with roses and rare ornamentals. And Kai-Kai Farm (kaikaifarm.com) is an abundant produce farm in Indiantown that doubles as a gorgeous event venue, with multiple entertaining spaces including the West Garden Pavilion, which can accommodate up to 50

people with shaded bar and cocktail tables.

LEAN INTO NATURE.

Draw decor inspiration from the native, laid-back personality of the surroundings.

Put greenery like palm leaves in a vase or have a florist create arrangements that are low on stuffiness and high on natural beauty—like a stunning ranunculus bubble display from Joy de Fleurs (joydefleurs.com)

For tablescape eye candy that guests can take home, custom calligrapher and engraver Kelly Frega of Calligraphy Chik (calligraphychik.com) adds sophisticated personalization to place cards crafted from natural materials like agate, sea glass, leaves, and even lemons.

GET LIT.

If your fete is taking place at dusk or dark, lighting is critical for both mood and functionality. Renting your illumination allows you to really go all out and create whatever type of vibe you want.

ENCOURAGE EASE OF CONSUMPTION.

Keep the food light and easy so guests can nosh and sip while they mingle. A staple for outdoor gatherings is the charcuterie board. Boarderie—which gained national recognition on the TV show Shark Tank in 2022—ships its artisan cheese and charcuterie boards (made to your specifications) nationwide and also offers local pickup at their Riviera Beach base. Or learn to make your own by signing up for

“Boarding School,” a charcuterie board–building class put on by Grated & Cured (gratedandcured.com) and hosted at Tide & Table in Tequesta (tideandtablehome.com). For dessert, bite-size is definitely best, and steer clear of anything meltable. Opt for handheld treats like adorable pineapple cake pops from Turtles Bakeree (turtlesbakeree.com) and fruit tarts from Importico’s Bakery Cafe (importicosbakerycafe.com)

For cocktails, eliminate annoying bar setup by arranging a visit from the Boozie Bluebell (booziebluebell.com) The adorable electric vehicle, run by Stuart resident Jade Smith, will roll up to your event and serve up beer, wine, bubbles, and craft cocktails from the eco-friendly mobile bar.

EMBRACE AN UNBREAKABLE SPIRIT. Gone are the days when durability meant plastic plates, red Solo cups, and sporks. Today’s shatterproof dinnerware has seriously leveled up. Plates made of sturdy bamboo or melamine, like the enamel-inspired French Country plate from One Hundred 80 Degrees sold at Matilda’s in Stuart, speak to storied style without the fragility of character (matildaslifestyle.com) For glassware, visit Jupiter’s Palm Harbor Boutique and pick up some fun (and unbreakable) Frost Flex Cups decorated with quippy sayings (palmharborboutique.com). ❖

With a new Conch 27, avid angler Riley Linden is locked and loaded with everything he needs for all types of fishing

For a young guy with an insatiable appetite for fishing, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better location to grow up than Jupiter. The area has produced some of the most ardent and talented fishing enthusiasts in the world, and Riley Linden of Tequesta is a classic example of the kind of fishing pedigree one can acquire here.

Riley’s first boat was a 17-footer, which he cut his teeth on as a youngster, terrorizing the Loxahatchee River. Next came a 25-foot center console, which provided his introduction to blue water. Once he had a taste of the Gulf Stream, there was no looking back.

His current pride and joy is a tournament-rigged Conch 27, which he and his father, Mike, had built to spec.

By the time the Conch 27 was under construction, Riley had a firm grasp on the type of fishing that appealed to him most. Notably, pelagics such as swordfish and yellowfin tuna, along with sailfish and wahoo, sat at the top of his list. The challenge of highly technical deepwater bottom-fishing is also something the father and son enjoy in the Bahamas. Provisions were made throughout the build process to facilitate each of these fishing styles.

All Conch boats are semi-custom

LOCATED ACROSS FROM ST. JOHN’S FAMED CANEEL BAY, LOVANGO RESORT & BEACH CLUB BALANCES PRIVATE ISLAND CALM WITH RUM-SPIKED FUN AND REWARDING NATURE PURSUITS

Thursday afternoon: Fly into St. Thomas and transfer by road to Red Hook, where you’ll hop onto a 10-minute ferry to Lovango Resort & Beach Club. At this private island hideaway, eco-chic wooden tree houses and explorer-style tented rooms rise on the north slope overlooking uninhabited Congo Cay, a pristine bird refuge cloaked in native flora and surrounded by jewel-toned waters that morph from topaz to emerald in the blink of an eye. Nooks for lounging abound (including an outdoor sunken living room in each tree house and a daybed under canvas in each tent), while screen windows and louver doors ensure vistas shine from all angles.

Thursday night: Refresh in your outdoor rain shower before hopping onto the water shuttle to Cruz Bay, St. John for a bit of boutique browsing and dinner. Reserve a beachside table at La Tapa, a foodie institution since 1996 serving Spanish-tinged international cuisine.

Friday morning: Rise and shine for a short morning hike

around the island. Take the BVI trail for views that span British Virgin Islands Jost Van Dyke and Tortola plus several uninhabited cays. Continue down to Crescent Beach, watching pelicans divebomb for fresh catches and keeping an eye out for any dolphins or turtles that may surface. Then head back uphill to the Treetops Lobby Tent at Lovango’s apex, where breakfast is served daily. Naturally, there are more jaw-dropping vistas here—this time near-aerial views of St. John and St. Thomas in a single frame.

Friday afternoon: It’s now time to relax in the sun. Lovango’s strength lies in its virgin beauty, which comes with the upsides of spectacular panoramas and aquamarine waters as well as the reality of rocky and gold-sand beaches. While many are content with languid days of full service on the natural grounds at Lovango’s Beach Club (and the sublime cabana-lined swimming pool above), those looking for picture-perfect white-sand glory can take the ferry to St. John’s Honeymoon Beach, which typically runs thrice weekly. The protected, bone-white beach is one of the dreamiest in the entire Caribbean.

Friday night: Indulge in elevated island cuisine at the resort’s Waterfront Café. Start with a smoked pineapple rum old-fashioned at the bar, then continue under the braided lights and towering turpentine trees fronting the ocean. Order the golden beet terrine, a delicate stack of the sweet root vegetable sprinkled with goat cheese over a salad of arugula, basil, charred onion, and crushed almonds with a burnt honey-lime dressing. Next, opt for the signature Caribbean lobster schnitzel, a pounded and tenderized lobster tail that is breaded and pan-fried and served over blistered red potatoes topped with lobster-cognac butter and an apple and fennel slaw. Keep the night going by joining fellow island dwellers at the weekly Sip + Stars party.

Saturday morning: After a nice breakfast in the Treetops Lobby Tent, don a mask and snorkel and explore

the marine life that thrives on both sides of Lovango (ask the concierge to point out the best spots).

OPEN FOR SEASON!

LOVANGO BEACH RESORT IS OPEN FOR THE 2024 SEASON THROUGH JULY 21. A THREENIGHT MINIMUM STAY IS REQUIRED UPON RESERVATION.

Saturday afternoon: Enjoy an easy afternoon, feet in the sand, at the Beach Club on a coral-colored bean bag, an umbrella-capped lounger, or a cabana couch. Have a beachfront lunch at Lovango’s fast-casual Sand Pit, where highlights include coconut-seasoned tuna poke and garlicky lobster flatbread with Boursin and béchamel. Alternatively, ask the concierge to arrange a safari taxi to another national park beach for a day of exploration on land or under the water. (Do both at Cinnamon Bay Beach, first meandering through sugar mill ruins and then heading to America Hill to swim in the ginclear waters.)

Saturday night: Return to Waterfront Café for your final dinner, savoring the other items that likely caught your eye Friday night (hello, sea urchin gnocchi). Preorder Sunday breakfast to your room for your final morning and bring a nightcap back to your tree house or tent to enhance an evening of phenomenal stargazing. Void of light pollution, the skies above Lovango put on a celestial spectacular. As you sip your cocktail, let your mind drift to a fantasy galaxy far, far away—or simply revere the one you’re currently in. lovangovi.com ❖

Kellie Gerardi’s recent journey to space is just the latest “wow” moment in a series of accomplishments for a Jupiter mom who inspires young girls around the world to reach for the stars

On July 20, 1969, the world watched as astronaut Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” Armstrong famously said. It would be nearly 15 more years before an American woman would go to space, when Sally Ride shot off from Cape Canaveral in the Challenger in 1983, inspiring little girls across the country to add “astronaut” to their list of aspirations. Since then, fewer than 80 women have taken the leap into space. One of those brave souls is Jupiter resident Kellie Gerardi. In November, Gerardi joined a Virgin Galactic crew on a flight to space, where she conducted health care research funded by the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences. The bioastronautics researcher hopes that sharing her journey will inspire more young girls to reach for the stars too.

“Women in the United States were not even eligible to become astronauts until the 1980s, and the relatively limited access to space compounded the problem,” says Gerardi, 35. “I do think that is changing rapidly though. When my mom was born, human beings hadn’t been to space, and then one single generation later, she is watching her daughter become an astronaut.”

The experience was a dream come true for Gerardi, who was born and raised in Jupiter. “Growing up here, my bedroom window faced northeast and that stretch of sky over Cape Canaveral,” she recalls. “I could literally watch space shuttle launches from my bedroom.”

After graduating from Jupiter Community High School in 2007, she moved to New York City to study documentary filmmaking at Barnard College (later matriculating at NYU). But a chance encounter with an astronaut at The Explorers Club, where she was working the coat check,

IT WAS LIKE A COMIC BOOK JAW-DROP MOMENT, WHERE I WAS JUST LOOKING AT THIS JEWEL OF A PLANET....”

opened her mind to the opportunities in commercial spaceflight. “I adjusted the limiter on my imagination after meeting Richard Garriott de Cayeux,” she says of the astronaut who would serve as a mentor to Gerardi in later years.

When she graduated from NYU in 2011—ironically, the same year the national space shuttle program was retired— the commercial spaceflight industry was just starting to emerge. Fascinated by the possibilities, Gerardi went on to do graduate coursework in bioastronautics at the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences in Colorado. “I was really motivated to be part of opening up access to space and democratizing access to space and expanding Earth’s economic sphere,” she says. “As a new grad, to me it felt like, wow, that’s the Star Trek future I want to be a part of!”

She began her career at the Commercial Spaceflight Federation and, since then, has worked in multiple areas of commercial spaceflight. Since 2015, she has been working with Palantir Technologies, a company that helps organizations govern artificial intelligence across public and private networks. Palantir’s technology is used in satellites and U.S. Air and Space Force applications. “I’ve really spanned everything from policy to hardware to everything in between to try to contribute to this industry,” she says. Throughout her career, Gerardi has also been heavily focused on parabolic flight and microgravity research.

On the morning of November 2, 2023, Gerardi boarded the VSS Unity at Spaceport America in New Mexico with a crew of six for the Galactic 05 mission. “I felt like I was walking toward my destiny when I boarded the spacecraft,” she says. “This spaceflight was the great ‘before and after’ divide in my life, and that was in the forefront of my mind.” An hour later, she was floating through space.

The experience literally took her breath away. “Virgin Galactic has cameras in the cabin, so I could just watch this video of my breath catching in my throat over and

over,” she recalls. “It was like a comic book jaw-drop moment, where I was just looking at this jewel of a planet, experiencing Earth and that cognitive dissonance of being both a part of it as home and then slightly outside of it and the profundity of knowing that everything that ever was is there and I’m here. The drama of seeing the planet was breathtaking.”

But Gerardi also had a mission on board: on her journey, she would conduct various testing that could help scientists in the field of medicine. For example, she monitored her own glucose levels in an effort to learn more about treating diabetes—a condition she is personally invested in. “There is evidence that suggests long-duration spaceflight induces insulin resistance, but we don’t know yet how quickly that starts,” she says. “My mother is insulin dependent, so this research is close to me and my family.”

With a passion for making space exploration more accessible and attainable to young girls, Gerardi hopes her recent flight will serve as an inspiration. To that end, she has also penned a children’s book series centered on space exploration—with a female main character named Luna Muna. The idea first came to her when she and her husband, Steven (who works in aerospace and

defense recruitment), were expecting their daughter, Delta V, now 6. “I was struggling to find books that centered on a little girl’s experience in space,” Gerardi says. “All the books I could find had little boys as the main character.” The first book, Luna Muna, follows a young girl who blasts off on an adventure into space. The character, modeled after her daughter, likes sparkles and pink in addition to space. “I wanted to show that space isn’t incompatible with all of the things so many little girls love,” says Gerardi. The second book in the series, Luna Muna: Space Café, was published last November, and there is a third book in the works.

Gerardi takes comfort in knowing that she has opened at least one little girl’s mind to the possibilities of what they can do. “When my daughter is asked to draw a picture of an astronaut, she draws a girl,” says Gerardi. And it is safe to say that she

is reaching many more girls all over the world. A savvy social media presence, Gerardi shares positive messages about space, motherhood, and girl power (often along with her daughter) with her more than 1.2 million followers on Instagram and TikTok combined. The petite, down-to-earth brunette is no doubt playing a pivotal role in changing the conversation about what astronauts look like today.

For a woman who once watched space launches through her bedroom window in Jupiter, knowing that her research and journey into space could one day help her own mom here on Earth feels as though the world has come full circle. “My mom and dad have always been so supportive,” she says. “They joke that I took it really literally when they said, ‘Reach for the stars.’” kelliegerardi.com; @kelliegerardi (Instagram and TikTok) ❖

JAMES FERRARA

It takes a lot to frighten James Ferrara. When he is not getting up close and personal with sharks, he works for Martin County Fire Rescue, where he has been a firefighter/paramedic for 16 years. Ferrara, 41, who grew up in Port St. Lucie, bought his first camera just eight years ago and taught himself how to shoot. “Some of my dive buddies were really into shark diving, so my first introduction to the photography world was through them,” he says.

He began joining his friends on diving excursions with his camera in tow shooting sharks and has since expanded his portfolio of work to include a variety of other marine life. This past September, he traveled to Moorea, Tahiti to photograph humpback whales. In November, he was in Magdalena Bay in Mexico photographing scores of striped marlin that come to hunt during the area’s annual sardine migration. “It’s such a surreal experience,” says Ferrara. “To be in the water with marlin and watch them hunt and see the speed, it’s just incredible.”

His work has garnered acclaim from Oceanographic Magazine, where he was a finalist in the publication’s annual Ocean Photographer of the Year competition in both 2021 and 2023. His stunning photographs are regularly on view at the Kona Kai Resort art gallery in Key Largo.

Ferrara is currently planning a trip to Antarctica in 2025, where he will spend a month on a sailboat photographing cold-water marine life including leopard seals, penguins, humpback whales, and orcas. jferraragallery.com; @jferraragallery (Instagram)

CASSANDRA SCOTT

The water has long been home to North Palm Beach native Cassandra Scott. “My parents have a house on the Intracoastal with a canal, so I spent my childhood hanging out back there with the critters,” she says. Now 36, she still hangs out with critters—though they are a lot bigger than the lizards, snakes, and horseshoe crabs from her youth. Through her work as an environmental advocate, Scott documents and photographs sharks in an effort to bring much-needed attention to these often-misunderstood creatures.

Scott always knew she wanted to work with animals and spent some time in college studying biology, engineering, and photography. Then one day, she received a phone call that would set a path for her to pursue her passion. “A buddy was working on one of the shark-diving boats out of Jupiter and asked if I wanted to work on it,” she recalls. She jumped at the opportunity.

Since then, she has gravitated toward conservation and, for the past three years, has been working with the American Shark Conservancy to collect data on sharks. With the goal of better understanding how humans and sharks interact and the impact we have on one another, she photographs the diverse marine life she encounters off the coast of Jupiter. “We have shelves right in our area with the warm waters of the Gulf Stream coming through and bringing lots of different types of creatures—everything from tiny corals to big sharks,” says Scott. “It’s just a big highway. You never know what you are going to see. It’s fun to be able to show people what is under the water and get them excited to go on a dive.”

In 2022, she was contacted by the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, where her photography is currently on display. americansharkconservancy.org; @covascott (Instagram)

LAZARO RUDA

Stuart resident Lazaro “Laz” Ruda has been fascinated by underwater life for as long as he can remember. “There is this picture of me and my mom on the beach when I was little,” he recalls. “I have a pacifier in my mouth, and I’m wearing a mask.”

Born in Spain, Ruda, now 50, was 5 months old when his parents moved to Florida. He grew up in Miami, then moved to North Palm Beach in 2005 and bought his first underwater camera while working as a dive master at Scuba Adventures. “People would always ask me what I saw underwater,” he says. Ruda figured answering that question would be easier if he could show them photos of his encounters. His passion became a career when he was invited to Jupiter’s ArtiGras festival in 2012 as one of the show’s emerging artists. Ruda now sells his work at art festivals throughout Florida during season as well as on his website.

His vast portfolio of work spans everything from dolphins, manatees, and humpback whales to starfish, seahorses, and jellyfish, most of his photographs captured off the coast of South Florida. “I know the reefs here very well,” he says. “The Breakers Reef is one of my favorites. I’ve had a lot of special experiences there.”

Ruda currently lives on a sailboat on the Intracoastal and hopes to take a trip around the world on the boat soon to continue exploring. “There’s wonder everywhere you look,” he says. “Being underwater is a very special place for me. It makes me really appreciate nature and enjoy the little things.” thelivingsea.com; @thelivingsea (Instagram) ❖

RAISING the Bar

Anew watering hole where good drinks, pub fare, and old friends come together has arrived in Tequesta. Local’s Pub from the same owners who operate the adjacent Casa Caña—is the essential “meetup and hangout” spot for locals, says owner Seamus O’Brien, who opened the pub in September. “We wanted to create a place we thought Tequesta was missing,” he says. “There’s no place like a ‘Cheers’ bar, where you walk in and everyone knows your name.”

With a moody atmosphere accented by Edison lighting, Local’s has a very different vibe from Casa Caña, with what O’Brien describes as a “really dark, moody, funky atmosphere” akin to “trashy chic.” Local’s features indoor seating for 45 as well as a dog-friendly outdoor patio with TVs, firepits, and cornhole and hosts live bands, deejays, and comedy shows throughout the week. A pool table and a golf video game (Golden Tee) provide more entertainment. The casual pub has also quickly become a popular spot for football fans, especially those rooting for the Florida State Seminoles and Philadelphia Eagles.

Typical bar fare including wings, nachos, soft pretzels, a rib eye Philly cheesesteak, and a “smash burger” (their spin on a gourmet Big Mac using meat from a local company) is elevated by Executive Chef David Chapman, who ran three Michelin-rated kitchens in Chicago and still leads the shared Casa Caña kitchen, making his own pickles, dressings, and sauces. In addition to craft beer, wine, and seltzers, the pub also serves specialty cocktails like the Corona Sunrise, as well as staples like the old-fashioned and espresso martini. thelocalspub.com ❖

AT WATERFRONT IN DOWNTOWN STUART, ENJOY UNIQUE AMERICAN FARE WITH A FOCUS ON SEAFOOD—AND INCREDIBLE VIEWS FROM THE NEWLY OPENED SECOND LEVEL

With 180-degree sweeping views of the St. Lucie River, Waterfront is one of the newest additions to downtown Stuart’s dining scene. The relaxed, casual downstairs outdoor lounge celebrated its first anniversary last month, and a new, elegant upstairs indoor dining room opened in early December 2023. “Ultimately, we wanted to provide a couple of different experiences at one venue,” says coowner and Stuart resident Derik Shambaugh, who partnered with James Corrigan to open the 12,000-square-foot Waterfront under S&C Restaurant Group. “Downstairs features ginormous Havana chairs with winged backs, couches, 75-inch TVs, and wood-clad walls. Upstairs is more of an elevated experience. It’s chic, modern, and has a Miami-ish feel with more of an intimate setting.”

The upstairs space features blue velvet bucket-seat barstools with chrome frames and white quartz–top dining tables. A mural painted by a local artist adds a pop of color to the blue, white, and black decor palette. Downstairs, an outdoor dog-friendly lounge offers 175 seats, including 29 barstools, protected from the elements by wind shades. Both levels have VIP areas for private parties and business meetings.

Executive Chef Ron Williams brings experience from the cruise industry, Marriott hotels, and Farmer’s Table to Waterfront’s scratch

kitchen, making fresh purees and syrups for cocktails and reductions and demi-glaces for food. The number one–selling cocktail (and Shambaugh’s favorite) is the Peartini, made with pear vodka, fresh lemon, organic pear juice, St-Germain, and a prosecco reduction.

The menu includes American fare and seafood, such as a pan-seared salmon fillet wrapped in prosciutto with a miso glaze that gives the entrée an edge. The Moroccan Cigars—fried eggrolls stuffed with tender braised beef short rib and smoked Gouda with golden barbecue sauce—are a unique and popular appetizer.

“We wanted to make sure that every single item on the menu had our own unique twist,” Shambaugh says. “The diver scallops is one of my favorite dishes. Ron does it on a nice Parmesan risotto. We create a blood orange reduction, which is the best flavor I’ve ever had.”

Waterfront replaces Mulligan’s, which Shambaugh says he used to frequent for drinks, appetizers—and the view. “When we saw that this building had become available, it was just a no-brainer,” he says. “It’s the perfect location. It just needed a lot of love.” thewaterfrontstuart.com ❖
