I
’ve been a music junkie for as long as I can remember. My very first concert was Billy Idol (don’t judge), and my musical tastes have evolved over the years, from rock and punk to alternative and hip-hop.... There was even a (brief) period where metal reigned supreme in my teenage brain. These days, I mostly fancy blues, classic rock, country, folk, and mash-ups of those genres, and while I have my favorite musicians, I’m always looking out for new music to tickle my eardrums. That’s one of the things I love about living here—there is always a live show to check out and lots of cool venues smattered about. For our annual Arts Issue, we decided to put together a handy guide to some of the best local music venues, including hot spots like Guanabanas and Terra Fermata as well as more intimate gems like the Side Door Jazz Club and Maxi’s Lineup. Beginning on page 46, “The Music Scene” also profiles a few local artists like Girlfriend Material, who grace our cover this month. There’s also no shortage of visual artists in the area, and a few standout exhibitions are on the horizon. I definitely can’t wait to visit Lighthouse ArtCenter to see the incredible work of National Geographic photographers Mac Stone and Carlton Ward Jr., among other artists, in Wild Hearts, a show that runs January 18 to February 24. Read more about it in “Wild Thing” on page 33. And in March, South African artist Derric van Rensburg will be at Call of Africa’s Native Visions Gallery in Palm Beach Gardens, where some of his beautiful, colorful paintings depicting wildlife and the natural world around us will be on display. In “Strokes of Nature” (page 34), we profile Native Visions Gallery owner Ross Parker and provide more details about the upcoming event with van Rensburg. Art and fashion have long shared space in history, with designers taking inspiration from artists and vice versa. Andy Warhol even once claimed that “fashion is more art than art is.” And while I don’t know about that, I certainly celebrate fashion as an art form. In this issue, we catch up with one local designer who, despite having learned to sew relatively late in life, is parading her artistic creations down runways all over the world. Meet Port St. Lucie–based fashion designer Kallee Jackson in “A Passion for Fashion,” beginning on page 52.

s I reflect on the past year, it occurs to me that my life wasn’t as balanced as I would have liked. I tend to be someone who reflexively says yes to everything, a habit that’s generally positive but can easily get out of hand. With that in mind, and with memories of the frenetic pace of 2023, I’m making a commitment to re-examine how I spend my time. We talk about “spending time” because time is currency, time is valuable, and time deserves focused deliberation as to how we use it. As much as we’d like, we cannot be everything to everyone. Prioritizing self-care is key to successfully showing up in all aspects of our lives. That said, January through April will be a very busy period for Jupiter residents. An abundance of events, fundraisers, and activities are already on our calendars. I encourage you to take some time prioritizing where you want to be. A good tool to help with that task is our Insider’s Guide newsletter. The weekly email will keep you updated on everything that’s happening in our area (to sign up, visit jupitermag.com). Speaking of scheduling time, take a look at the promotional Arts & Entertainment Guide in this issue to learn about all the performances and special events going on this season. Feast YOUR EYES P
alm Beach Gardens resident Guillermo Alvarez has been serving locals at Evo Italian for six years, starting out as a busboy in 2017 and now mixing drinks behind the bar. When he’s not crafting cocktails, he’s crafting artwork— much of it hanging on the walls all around the Tequesta restaurant. The 35-year-old has always loved to draw and often carries a sketch pad around with him. Soon after he started working at Evo, Chef Erik Pettersen asked if he could look at his drawings—and he was impressed. When Pettersen and his wife, Lydiannie, learned that Alvarez had never painted on canvas because of the cost of supplies, they gifted him the materials so he could further explore his talent. “Guillermo’s art is light and fun,” says Pettersen, who loves decorating his restaurant with art. “I can put marble and wood and lighting and chandeliers and that’s all great, but the warmth is the artwork.” At any given time, Alvarez has around 22 pieces hanging at Evo, which patrons are welcome to purchase if interested. The artist describes his style as “surrealistic, realistic, and minimalistic,” incorporating vibrant colors and the creative use of 3D objects. Alvarez also uses his talent to help people in Guatemala, where he lived until moving to the United States in 2012. He donates 15 percent of his sales to a church in his native country. “One painting I sold made 50 people smile with the gift of food that we bought in Guatemala,” he says. “I told myself that one day I would paint 10,000 smiles.” View Alvarez’s work at artgog19.com. —Paige Feigenbaum JA NUA RY 2 0 2 4

ccording to St. Lucie County’s office of tourism, in the 1970s, a travel agent named Jack Crain introduced peacocks to the city of Fort Pierce when he housed a few of the showy birds in his backyard. Fifty years later, it’s common to come across the colorful birds strutting their stuff in the downtown area. Now the Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency has unveiled a collection of new public art called the Peacock Arts District Mural Program, in honor of our feathered friends. The agency put out a nationwide call to artists in March 2023 to propose designs depicting the past, present, and future of Fort Pierce. After reviewing 50 submissions from more than 30 artists, the agency chose three talented Florida women—Zoey Alyssa Bridges, Nicole “Nico” Holderbaum, and Samara Ash—to paint the exterior walls
of four buildings with their visions. The completed murals—located at 500, 601, and 710 Orange Avenue and 616 Atlantic Avenue—were revealed in September. “Peacocks are symbolic, so it’s really great to see them around the community,” says Zoey Alyssa Bridges, a Fort Pierce native who painted a colorful bird at 710 Orange Avenue, where the Lindsay School of the Arts is, among other murals. “They go through a metamorphosis, gaining these colorful feathers after they lose them, so there’s a lot to be taken away from the subject matter.” Paying homage to the evolution of Fort Pierce from the time Native Americans inhabited the seaside town, Colombian-born artist Samara Ash spray-painted a stunning woman wearing a headdress of peacock feathers to symbolize the passage of time. Located at 616 Atlantic Avenue, the work is called Awena, the Native American word meaning “sunrise”—an apt title for a mural in “The Sunrise City.” Fort Pierce redevelopment specialist Marsha Commond hopes the murals will continue not only to delight residents but also to bring awareness to visitors about the city. “We want to take advantage of the attention and use it as a platform to communicate who Fort Pierce is,” she says. cityoffortpierce.com

Disco Fever!
L
eave your inhibitions at home! It’s right there in the title: when you attend a silent disco hosted by Be You Disco, embrace who you are— even if you have two left feet. Cofounded by life coach Carolina Panoff and musician Kevin Oliveira (stage name Kevin Ohm) in 2020, Be You Disco hosts guided wellness experiences that include grounding, meditation, singing, and dancing to a curated playlist aimed at eliciting a therapeutic wave of emotions. Participants wear headsets so they hear only the vocal empowerment messages and music of Panoff and Oliveira. Be You Disco now attracts 30 to 80 people at its regular public event on Singer Island. Ranging in age and background, participants unite on the beach for a truly uplifting experience. “There are so few activities in our society where young people and older people can cross over and intersect and enjoy the same activity,” says Oliveira, who lives in Tequesta. They also host an ongoing public event on the lawn outside The Ben hotel in West Palm Beach and have partnered with various local museums and performing arts centers. A core part of their business is the corporate sector. They travel nationwide to host team-building activities for companies including Delta and Aetna, as well as colleges and universities. They also lead events at private parties like weddings, birthdays, and graduation celebrations. At press time, Panoff was in talks with Piper’s Angels Foundation about a possible partnership event. A new show at Lighthouse ArtCenter aims to promote the importance of wildlife conservation and protect animals like the Florida panther from extinction b y PA I G E F E I G E N B A U M

ational Geographic photographers and explorers Mac Stone and Carlton Ward Jr. have made it their mission to educate people on the importance of wildlife conservation in the Florida Everglades and beyond. Through photography and storytelling, these artists capture the essence of majestic creatures in their ever-shrinking natural environments—and this season, art enthusiasts and conservationists alike can admire their work in Tequesta. During its sixtieth anniversary season, Lighthouse ArtCenter will host a must-see exhibit of their awe-inspiring work. Wild Hearts will run January 18 to February 24 in the center’s Schorr Gallery, featuring Stone and Ward’s images of panthers, alligators, snakes, bobcats, bears, birds, and more. Stone, who is on
the board of directors of The Everglades Foundation, and Ward, who founded the Florida Wildlife Corridor project in 2010, hope the show will educate guests on what these creatures add to Florida’s ecosystem and what we can do to aid in their survival. Also part of the exhibition are colorful animal paintings by Austrian artist Helmut Koller and three-dimensional sculptures by Canadian artist Ellen Jewett, which will be on display in the center’s Spencer Gallery. One creature that is close to the artists’ hearts is the Florida panther, our state’s official animal, which has been on the federal endangered species list since 1967. “The Florida panther is an umbrella species, which means they are the heart of the ecological community within their habitat,” says Stuart resident Janeen Mason, curator at Lighthouse ArtCenter. “Protecting panthers in Florida indirectly conserves other threatened and endangered wildlife in the state. It is beyond important to ensure that there are areas that will be protected for them in perpetuity. If they disappear, the system begins to crumble.” Last year, Mason curated a show at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee
featuring the work of Stone and Ward, where Ward spoke to legislators about the importance of the Florida Wildlife Corridor, a nearly 18 million–acre network of public and private lands that allows animals to safely travel throughout the state without having to cross highways. In 2022, his production company, Florida Wild, released a film called Path of the Panther, executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. Ward set up motion-activated cameras to capture panthers roaming the corridor. The incredible documentary is currently available to watch on Hulu and Disney+. Mason says that after the Tallahassee show, there was a significant amount of money given to the Florida Wildlife Corridor. “Was it a result of the exhibition? Strokes of Nature CHILDHOOD RECOLLECTIONS INFORM ROSS PARKER’S LIFE WORK, SHARING ARTISTIC VISIONS OF HIS AFRICAN HOMELAND AT HIS LOCAL GALLERIES by NICOLE NEAL

alk with Ross Parker for only a few minutes and it’s immediately apparent he’s an artist at his core. It’s in the way he speaks about his preferred subject matter, which has remained unchanged since childhood—nature, particularly the animals, plants, and landscapes of his native Zimbabwe. He talks about the “soft, hazy light” of the southern hemisphere and of “stars so close you feel like you can pull them out of the sky.” He speaks of a silence interrupted only by “the call of a dove, or the roar of a lion, or the bark of a kudu.” “The bush, wildlife, flora, and fauna have been my passion my whole life,” says the Tequesta resident who owns Call of Africa’s Native Visions Galleries in Palm Beach Gardens and Naples, which are filled with works that celebrate the species and places he loves. Since his start in the gallery business 36 years ago, Parker has worked with more than 34,000 collectors and showcased the works of approximately 30 sculptors,

carvers, painters, and glass artists from Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and across Europe. Coming in March, lauded South African painter Derric van Rensburg will visit Native Visions in Palm Beach Gardens after a late-February stop at Parker’s Naples gallery. Charitable giving is a guiding principle of Native Visions, and a portion of sales from van Rensburg’s visit will be donated to the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife in Durban, South Africa. “My favorite thing in the world is animals,” says Parker, who grew up on a 16,000-acre ranch in what was then Rhodesia and spent his childhood caring for a menagerie of pets—duikers (a small antelope) and pookies (slang for a galapago, a tiny primate), as well as baboons, monkeys, hawks, and owls. He considered a career as a veterinarian but showed such promise with watercolors, acrylics, pencils, and chalk that he was offered a chance to study art at university. But these were unsettled times in the region, and art gave way to military service. Parker Artwork by Derric van Rensburg joined the Rhodesian Special Forces, fighting Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe African National Union. In his time as an airborne commando, he met Americans—many of them Vietnam veterans—who, after Mugabe’s victory, enticed him to move to the United States. In 1980, with two suitcases and $1,876—his military retirement payout—he arrived in Miami to start a new life. It was on a return trip to Africa that Parker says “a light went off.” He met a stone sculptor and a wildlife painter and saw an opportunity to unite his love for Africa, animals, art, and nature by representing these artists in the United States. The first Native Visions Gallery opened in Boca Raton in 1987, primarily showing works from Africa. He eventually expanded to include nature artists from around the world, and other galleries followed. Today,

he operates two Native Visions—the Palm Beach Gardens location, which opened in 2015, and the Naples gallery, which opened in 1999. He plans to open a third gallery in Fort Lauderdale this summer. Wanting to share the beauty of his homeland with clients, in 2020, Parker launched Native Visions Safaris, allowing customers to experience Africa from the perspective of someone who grew up there. During “art safaris,” guests travel with a native artist who later recreates a scene from the experience on canvas. “This is such a unique way to capture a once-in-a-lifetime trip,” says Parker. A piece of his heart may be in Africa, but there’s a piece in Florida too. As Parker describes our state, he paints a picture of a land of “spring-fed rivers and vast wetlands,” of “cypress and black-eyed Susans,” of “kayaking in blue, blue rivers with alligators floating by and the most beautiful waterbirds in the world.” Nature, it seems, is the greatest artist. ❖

Like Parker, Derric van Rensburg’s work is informed by a childhood spent in African nature—in van Rensburg’s case, it was the bush and savannas of South Africa. From these experiences, along with a formal education in fine art, grew the painting style he calls “Contemporary Impressionism.” His work, as he describes it, captures “fleeting images of light and texture and shape” in the landscapes, daily life, and natural world around him. Van Rensburg’s art has been exhibited at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art and at Cape Town’s Iziko South African National Gallery. He views Florida as a natural outlet for his artwork and particularly enjoys painting native birds. “I’m in seventh heaven when I have to do one of those,” he says. To further engage the community, Gonzalez organizes book signings and release parties with local authors and hosts a “Go” club every Wednesday for those interested in learning and playing the strategic Chinese board game. There is also a monthly book club hosted at the shop, which is Gonzalez’s favorite event. “Hearty discussion with differing viewpoints breathes so much depth and range into stories and characters,” he says. The cost to join the book club is $25 a month, which includes a hardcover copy of each month’s book. It’s this community aspect of B Boutique that Gonzalez treasures most. “While books can often be found cheaper at large retailers and online, the pandemic underscored the importance of community, which is as intangible as it is crucial to our well-being,” he says. “The increasing uniformity of our shopping environments negatively impacts our communal experience. rowing up, Tony Gonzalez says his family didn’t have much money. The local library was free to enjoy and became a cherished spot where his mother often took him and his sister as children. “One of my fondest memories is reading in the library aisles and my sister and I trying (unsuccessfully) to suppress our laughter while enjoying Calvin and Hobbes comics,” he says. He went on to become a software engineer, continuing his love of reading throughout adulthood. Three years ago, back home in Jensen Beach after a visit to St. Augustine, he and his wife, Juliette, discussed how much they loved one of the city’s quaint bookstores, Second Read Books. They realized that the Stuart area, despite all its community spirit, lacked an independent bookstore. They decided to change that and opened B Boutique near Sewall’s Point in November 2022. They wanted the shop to reflect the unique and captivating charm of Stuart, infusing it with a warm, welcoming, and vibrant aura to draw local readers. They stocked the shelves with a thoughtfully curated selection of fiction and specialty books, including rare finds. Space and money were their biggest obstacles, so they focused on quality over quantity. “Our section of rare and collectible books houses some genuine gems,” says Gonzalez. “A second edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray holds a special place in my heart, closely followed by the Chartwell Edition of The Second World War by Winston Churchill. These are distinctive books that are hard to come by at local bookstores.” Aside from books, B Boutique also carries a variety

outh Florida’s proximity to the Gulf Stream offers residents the opportunity to experience one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems an angler could hope for. Steve is an experienced angler who enjoys a broad array of fishing styles that cover everything from the backwater to the blue water. The layout of the Floridian is well thought out and comfortable to move around freely while fishing or cruising, and SeaHunter was willing to add some custom touches to this model to further suit Steve’s needs. Changing the helm face configuration from a recessed electronics box to a pair of flush-mounted MFD units, along with fabricating a dry storage compartment on the dash and adding a tackle station to the rear of the helm seating, were special requests that the manufacturer was happy to accommodate. TORI LEE Singer/songwriter Tori Lee first picked up a guitar in middle school—reluctantly. “My dad dragged me into a music store and bought me a guitar, and I was so upset!” recalls the 25-year-old Stuart native. Her father saw her musical talent early, and now she’s well on her way to a successful career. In 2020, she moved to Nashville, where she cultivated her country sound and made connections with other musicians at songwriting events. Now back home for a bit, she released her first single, “My Own Time,” last year. It’s just one of the many tunes she has written over the years, filling 25 notebooks with thoughtful lyrics, and she plans to return to Nashville to record more of them soon. A regular on the local music scene since 2010, the Killbillies have a unique sound inspired by Celtic/Irish music infused with bits of Americana, punk, and rock. The trio—Ben Childs of Tequesta, and Palm Beach Gardens residents Hector Diaz and James Galiano—play a multitude of instruments including guitar, drums, banjo, saxophone, and upright bass and put on some of the most high-energy shows around. The band released their fourth album, Back to Basics, in 2022 and just came off a tour of the Southeast. Later this year, they’ll hit the road again, but in the meantime, you can catch a show at Tiki 52 in Tequesta on January 19 starting at 6:30 p.m.. PASSION for FASHION An unexpected gift led Port St. Lucie resident Kallee Jackson to a new career in fashion. Now her couture designs are cascading down runways from New York to Paris.

hen Arthur Jackson Jr. gifted his wife a sewing machine for Mother’s Day in 2016, he never imagined she would wind up sewing her way into fashion history. “I didn’t even know how to sew at the time,” says Kallee Jackson, 37, who first used the machine to make a skirt for date night with her hubby. When she wore it out to dinner, two women sitting at the adjacent table asked where she bought her skirt. When Jackson explained it was her own design, the women asked if she would make skirts for them. They took out their checkbooks and paid her on the spot. It seems those ladies had an eye for fashion. Today, Jackson’s designs are catching the attention of the fashion industry, from New York to Paris to London. In October, the Port St. Lucie resident traveled to France for Paris Fashion Week 2023, where models walked the runway in her couture designs. She has also launched a resort collection and a handbag collection and is garnering accolades as a designer she

never could have dreamed up. Her burgeoning success in the industry is all a bit surreal for a woman from humble beginnings. Originally from Jamaica, Jackson immigrated to the United States in 2003 with her family when she was 17 years old. The family settled in Stuart, where Jackson worked at Wendy’s and then at Publix. She married in 2006, and she and her husband, Arthur, a manager at Publix, moved to Port St. Lucie and started a family. Raising her three children while holding down a job at Publix, Jackson says she found herself struggling with depression. “I came from poverty, and I couldn’t see my dreams ever coming true,” she says. And then came Mother’s Day 2016, when her husband hoped to make her day special by gifting her that sewing machine. “He couldn’t figure out what to get me, and I thought he was crazy,” Jackson recalls thinking of the gift selection. Nonetheless, she started sewing—first the skirts, then, when the pandemic hit, she started making face masks. As she got more adept with the machine, she eventually began making dresses for proms, weddings, and galas. By 2022, designing had became her passion, and she opened a fashion house, Maison de Kallee Jackson, in St. Lucie West, where she sells

her one-of-a-kind dresses. Jackson creates custom pieces that cater to individual tastes, working closely with clients to understand their likes and dislikes, their favorite colors, which fabrics are best for the design and their body shape, and what occasion they will be wearing the dress for. “I sketch as they talk,” says Jackson, who aims to capture on paper her clients’ unique visions. Once a design comes to life as a finished dress, Jackson’s team at Maison de Kallee Jackson styles the client with shoes, accessories, hair, and makeup, treats them to a photo shoot, and even coordinates limousine service to the event. Her portfolio of sketches and photographs of finished dresses is impressive and diverse, each design more

stunning than the next and each quintessentially unique. Jackson admits she is often as astonished as her customers when she sees the final result. “I’m selftaught, so I am constantly surprising myself with each new design,” she says. It wasn’t long after opening her business that Jackson received something every fashion designer dreams of: an invitation to New York Fashion Week. Runway 7, one of the production companies for NYFW, had seen Jackson’s dresses on social media and was impressed. They asked if she would like to put on a runway show at the 2023 NYFW in February, featuring 10 of her designs. “It was exciting and emotional at the same time,” recalls Jackson. “It takes some designers 15 to 20 years to be invited. For me, it proved even more that I am good at what I do and motivated me to keep going.” The show was a resounding success—one of her runway

looks was even purchased by a wellknown celebrity ( Jackson says she has to keep the name private for now). There was a billboard in Times Square featuring Maison de Kallee Jackson. It was all so surreal…. Her successful New York show paved the way for more esteemed invitations—to Paris Fashion Week this past October, as well as London Fashion Week and Dubai Fashion Week in 2024. Jackson says she hopes to see an invitation for Milan Fashion Week soon. While she prepares for London, Jackson is also busy launching her new resort collection, the Kallee Jackson Kiss Collection. Introduced at Paris Fashion Week 2023, the collection is a mix of bright, colorful pieces that Jackson says offers something for everyone, regardless of their size or age. “I wanted to create a collection that everyone could have access to,” she says. For now, the new collection is only available online (at kalleejackson.com), but she is working toward getting it into stores. Her handbag collection, Kallee Jackson Evening Bag Collection, which is also sold on her website, features bags made of wood in vibrant colors and patterns, each a unique work of art. Models walked the runway wearing 40 of Jackson’s designs, including some from the new resort collection. “The best part was that I have so much love for this place, and I got to see the love right back,” she says. Starting this month, Jackson’s designs will be sold in
stores in Paris—just another one of her dreams coming true. “I would like to be a well-known fashion house, open a boutique here in South Florida, and be invited to Milan,” she says when asked about future goals. There is one person for sure who believes all of that will happen: her husband. “Arthur is my biggest supporter,” says Jackson. “He always saw things differently. WHAT IS “UNINSURED MOTORIST” COVERAGE? A type of car insurance that can pay medical expenses if you or passengers are injured in by a driver without liability insurance or low limits, or a hit-and-run. It covers medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and funeral expenses.
IF A PIPE BURSTS, WILL HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE COVER DAMAGES? Homeowners insurance policies generally cover water damage caused by unforeseen pipe damage. Flood insurance covers damage arising from water entering the home from the outside, such as an overflowing lake or pool.
DO I NEED GOLF CART INSURANCE? Golf cart insurance provides coverage for collision and comprehensive, bodily injury, and property damage. Street legal golf carts are treated like cars and require insurance with coverage for uninsured motorists, personal injury protection (PIP), or medical payments, custom equipment, and roadside assistance.
WILL A WIND MITIGATION INSPECTION LOWER MY INSURANCE COST? If you improved a deficiency (e.g., installed an impactrated garage door) or replaced or updated a roof, then a new inspection may result in a discount. If you have shutters and install impact glass, then the opening protection discount was in place and the improvement is not eligible for further discount.
WHAT IS MY HURRICANE LOSS DEDUCTIBLE? Typically it is determined by a percentage of the coverage A limit on the homeowner's insurance policy. For example, if you have $500,000 in coverage A and a 2 percent hurricane deductible, your initial out of pocket is $10,000.

Hire a local agent with a strong record and references for the highest return. Get your home “showing ready” before you list it: tackle repairs, clean, declutter and depersonalize, paint (light/ neutral), and brighten lighting and landscaping.
WHAT ARE TODAY’S HOMEBUYERS LOOKING FOR? Location, condition, and price. Many buyers are looking to simplify and upgrade—and prefer (and will pay a premium for) new or renovated homes vs. a project. The latest trends are home automation with security, flawlessly designed kitchens, spacious home offices, luxury primary bedrooms and good outdoor living space.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE WHEN WORKING WITH HOME BUYERS? Define your “must haves” for the home and neighborhood. Work with an experienced agent to find the best homes within your price range. Factor in insurance costs, taxes, and assessments. Do a thorough inspection.

ngela Wright has always been comfortable in the kitchen. Her Italian mother and grandmother introduced her to baking and cooking at a young age, and the family spent much of their time in the kitchen together. But it was her brother and sister-inlaw who later introduced her to the world of sourdough. “They are true homesteaders and live primarily off the land [in New Hampshire],” says Wright, who resides in Tequesta. “They raise and butcher their own meat, produce fresh milk, homemade cheese, herbs, fruits, and vegetables. My sister-in-law showed me the ropes with sourdough when I visited, and she sent me home with my very first established starter. I dove in headfirst.” Last year, Wright began selling her bread under the brand Love & Flour. Her made-to-order loaves feature fresh ingredients she purchases from a local green market and include
flavors like caramelized onion with Gruyère, fig and goat cheese, jalapeño cheddar, cranberry walnut, and cinnamon raisin. Her specialty is focaccia with olive oil, rosemary, and sea salt, and she also makes a delectable Italian lemon ricotta cake. He and a buddy had some savings, and they drove to Kentucky and made a handshake deal with the Colonel Sanders. My father grew up in a social family environment where great food, friendship, and relationships were important, and this career just fit his personality. Where did the idea for Berry Fresh Cafe come from? At that time, the fresh food movement was starting. People didn’t want to go to chain restaurants; they wanted farm-to-table. That’s where he came up with the name Berry Fresh. He was living in Port St. Lucie, so that’s where he opened the first one. That was 14 years ago, and we’re still there. Did you always want to work with your dad? When I was a little boy, I could only spend time with him on weekends because he worked all the time. We always said, “Someday we’re going to build a national chain together.” And we did. We had up to 30 R.J. Gators restaurants at our peak. But in 2006-2007, with the economy, we got wiped out. I give my father a lot of credit because he just picked right back up. He was 68 years old when he started Berry Fresh.

He was such an industry leader. What’s the biggest thing you have learned from watching him over the years? Definitely perseverance. He always had a positive outlook, even though he had some setbacks in his career. He always told me, “It’s not what happens to you, it’s how you handle it.” He loved the restaurant business. What’s your business philosophy? Our secret sauce is our culture. We couldn’t do this without our team, and it’s all about the team. We have a lot of systems in place for training and rewarding our people for doing a great job, like the Mr. T’s Employee Assistance Fund—”Mr. T” was my dad [Tim]. It’s a tough industry overall, and the fund helps people in the restaurant family who are in need. We also give back 20 percent to the community and do a lot of fundraising. We’re a restaurant with a soul. Talk about the “fresh” in Berry Fresh Cafe. We source fresh whenever possible, and our menu rotates based on seasons and is influenced by whatever vegetables are growing at the time. I go to Fitzgerald Farms in Georgia to buy peaches. We get strawberries from the Parkesdale Farm in Plant City, Florida. We get blueberries from Winter Haven and heirloom tomatoes from Homestead. esidents of Palm Beach Gardens now get to enjoy what those farther north have been treated to for years, as a fourth Berry Fresh Cafe opened in the Shoppes of Oakbrook Plaza late last summer. The local chain was founded by longtime restaurateur Tim Timoteo, who opened the first cafe in Port St. Lucie in 2009. His son Mitch soon joined his dad in the business as they opened two more locations, in Stuart and Jupiter, becoming director of operations in 2018. When Tim retired, Mitch took the helm as CEO—a role he continues today (though regulars often spot him behind the counter taking orders or in the kitchen cooking). His father sadly passed away last year, and Mitch continues to honor his legacy, expanding the business that has become a local favorite. We caught up with the Palm City resident to learn a little more about the family biz.
