WELLNESS AND INTERIOR DESIGN by Karen Larson, Principal, Broad Avenue Studios, Inc.
W
ellness is a comprehensive term incorporating many facets. The definition according to the National Wellness Institute, is “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.” With people spending on average 90% of their time indoors, leading professionals in medicine, science and the green building industry are developing new building standards, design concepts and material specifications in an effort to improve human health and well-being through the built environment. While most of the focus is on the workplace environment and public community spaces, Broad Avenue Studios, Inc., an interior design firm specializing in wellness, helps homeowners apply these concepts to their private residences. Through the consideration and control of key factors including air quality, water filtration and lighting design, your personal space can greatly impact your health. Here are a few wellness design trends we’ve noted recently:
AIR QUALITY AND MATERIAL SELECTION Improving and maintaining high air quality in the indoor environment is crucial to one’s health. Not only are proper ventilation and filtration systems key, but also the construction materials used in your home can dramatically affect air quality. Paint, flooring, adhesives, sealants and even your furniture can potentially off-gas, acting as indoor air pollutants.
LIGHTING Natural lighting is an important wellness trend because it assists with our natural circadian rhythms keeping us alert and energetic during the day. Furthermore, scientific studies have found that circadian disruption can act as a probable human carcinogen. Technology advances have made residential lighting control systems that support the circadian rhythm more affordable and simpler to use for the common homeowner. In addition, artificial light is also being used to influence mood and wellness. For example, soft, diffused light can promote relaxation. Blue light can help to improve productivity which makes it a great choice for workspaces.
FULL SPECTRUM PAINT For the past decade the concept of full spectrum paint color has emerged as one of the most intriguing developments in paint color technology. Full spectrum color mixing means no black is used in the formulas since black absorbs light wavelengths and does not contribute to reflecting light back into the space. This results in a naturally brighter environment with the nuances and undertones of a full spectrum color inherently more satisfying to the eye. METHOD & CONCEPT
“Jensen’s work treads the thin line between function and fashion… design bleeds into art, and art is synonymous with intelligent design.” – Shana Beth Mason, Arts Writer
Formerly Thomas Riley Studio, METHOD & CONCEPT is a gallery, art consultancy, and design atelier. What makes us unique is our perspective; we believe contemporary craft, fine art, and design share a symbiotic relationship, each building upon the other to form a holistic view of the world in which we live. Led by Chad Jensen – artist, furniture maker, designer, and the Founding Director of METHOD & CONCEPT, we specialize in artfully inspired bespoke furniture and interiors. From conceptual development, all the way through fit, finish, and installation, we pride ourselves on exceptional attention to detail. the year ahead. And what better way to get inspired than at home? In this issue, we bring you 12 diverse homes, each with its own style and design aesthetic. We’ve carefully curated projects
that
incorporate
design
elements not typically labeled as “art,” such as fine stone materials, dynamic fabrics, intricate bespoke light fixtures, decorative wall and ceiling treatments, and finely woven rugs. A common theme throughout the issue is interior design as art. Of course, then there is fine art itself. Our cover story features several collectible pieces from Mel Bochner, Roy Lichtenstein and Dale Chihuly, to name just a few. Many readers in Southwest Florida source fine art from our sophisticated area galleries, Miami’s annual Art Basel event and from their travels around the world. The piece featured below left is a one-of-a-kind oil painting interior designer Wendy Berry fell in love with while on vacation in Capri, Italy. Her fiancé was so moved by her reaction to the piece that he surprised her with it on their wedding day, and now it lives in their Naples penthouse at Kalea Bay (see page 182). We hope these pages provide inspiration for your new year ahead, and we welcome you to consider Florida Design Naples Edition your go-to source for all things luxury in the home.

Consistently, and undeniably, better always wins. Our experiences have proven this philosophy time and time again. It is the core of our culture and the heart of everything we do. And how we do it. That’s why clients choose us to begin with.

BEACH CLUB YACHTING The Benetti M/Y Seasense, defined by its luxuriously unique beachside ambiance, offers the ultimate indoor-outdoor yachting experience. PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTESY OF AZIMUT-BENETTI GROUP
I
Italian megayachyt builder Benetti unveiled its 220-foot Benetti M/Y Seasense custom superyacht with luxurious
contemporary features that recall the sea. Dutch designer Cor D. Rover styled the exteriors with what he calls his “Benetti beach club concept” — a design that evokes the feeling of relaxing on the beach. Surrounded by teak planking that lends the space an open airy feel, is a massive freshwater swimming pool edged by bold blue, umbrella-shaded lounge chairs. Located on the aft deck, it is considered Olympic size for a superyacht pool. It can be converted to a basketball court or a dance floor for evening fun, when carbon fiber panels are assembled on top of the water. A nearby dining area, set with a table that accommodates 12, is also perfect for poolside entertaining. continued on 118

Designed with a unique indoor-outdoor layout
ideal for family entertaining, the M/Y Seasense features expansive deck spaces and private social areas furnished with relaxed luxury. With a top speed of 15.5 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles, the ship cruises at a speed of 12 knots. LEFT:
Aboard the Benetti M/Y Seasense, the expansive
swimming pool, a focal point built to appeal to families, is one of the largest pools ever built on a superyacht measuring nearly 33 feet by 13 feet.

THE MAIN DECK’S INDOOR-OUTDOOR AREA IS SITUATED BENEATH A COVERED VERANDA WITH POOL VIEWS. THE DINING AREA IS SET FOR 12 GUESTS WITH 10 SIDE CHAIRS AND TWO HOST CHAIRS IN A BOLD BLUE HUE TO FORM A CONNECTION WITH SEA AND SKY. The contemporary interiors, a collaboration between Los Angeles-based design firm Area Architecture and Benetti’s talented team of architects, feature artwork and accessories in a sophisticated color palette of sea-blue hues. A variety of wood veneers with backlit features, exotic marbles, silk area rugs and intriguing flooring solutions such as teak planking can be seen throughout the vessel’s spacious living areas. Just steps from the pool area is the main salon with a living/screening room designed with an L-shaped sofa and cozy armchairs. The space can be accessed from the lobby and the stunning gray, Antartide Marble spiral stairway. Softly lit beneath, the stairway features a blue wooden structure with steel inserts that echo its dynamic flowing design. F
French luxury car brand Bugatti recently unveiled the Divo, a new supercar offspin of its high-performing sister, the Chiron. The exclusive limited edition series of 40 vehicles, offered in the millions, sports a sleek muscular exterior and a custom, two-tone color scheme of “Titanium Liquid Silver” and “Divo Racing Blue.” The striking palette extends to the sleek interior that features specially designed Alcantara leather seats with more aggressive bolstering and larger shift paddles on the steering wheel. With its powerful blend of agility and aerodynamics, the Divo was specifically designed for navigating sharp corners and bends. Promising superior handling due to its lower weight and retuned suspension, it expertly corners a track at a top speed of 236 mph with its massive 1,500 hp, 16-cylinder, quad-turbo engine. www.bugatti.com N

hen a savvy couple from Park City, Utah, bought this 6,500-square-foot
spec house at the Moorings in Naples, Fla., they were eager to engage an active lifestyle with their adorable pair of “Westies,” Alta and Hampton, and enjoy frequent visits from their three sons, daughter-in-law and eventual grandchildren. So they commissioned interior designer David Ostrander, who had created previous interiors for them, and architects Rob Herscoe and Michael Hajjar, who had designed the original spec house, to transform it into their elegant yet functional dream home. Though the house offers stunning views of Moorings Bay, Ostrander felt it was a subdued spec home in need of new finishes, custom cabinetry and lots of color for the new owners. “We wanted aesthetics, and fortunately David understood our vision,” says the wife, who has a design background and was involved in the project. Ostrander and Herscoe partnered to add some of the desired architectural detail by placing louvered blue awnings and creating elevation via a pair of fountains at the front door. “The bones were there so we made no major structural changes,” Herscoe says.
RIGHT:
The exterior is distinguished by fine detailing
including the rusticated stone on the bottom of the facade and limestone columns topped by blue terra cotta pots. Naturally aged in the salt air, Boyd Lighting’s laser cut solid copper wall sconces lead the way to the entry, where a contemporary, stained sapele double door beckons family and friends.

IN THE HALLWAY, VINTAGE BLUE LEATHER CHAIRS BY FRENCH ARTIST JACQUES QUINET, A PERIOD FLOOR LAMP BY AMERICAN FURNITURE DESIGNER VLADIMIR KAGAN, AND AN ANTIQUE LALIQUE VINTAGE BOWL PAIRED WITH A 1960S BRUTALIST BRONZE STATUE ARE THE KIND OF CURATED FURNISHINGS THAT INTERIOR DESIGNER DAVID OSTRANDER AND HIS CLIENTS CHERISH.
Step inside and the unique nature of the home immediately captivates. “The original design plan to ‘wrap’ the second floor around the first floor allows the ceiling to soar in the great room — an exception in this exclusive community,” builder Rich Compagnone says. “It was really hard to do, but it worked out great.” Ostrander left the limestone flooring and ripped out most everything else. He worked his magic with surfaces, gave depth to the walls and added fine art that pops with color. “I love to build the interior around an art collection,” the designer says. “Then I intersperse unique lighting with antique pieces.” From the entry through the main living areas, Christian Dior gray wraps the walls. Stairway railings in a gunmetal gray pull in tones from the walls dotted with contemporary works of art. Bursts of color lead the way through the halls lined with bright, colorful pieces by Alexander Calder (Untitled), Andy Warhol (Queen Margrethe of Denmark), and figurative artist Alex Katz (Red Hat Tarajia). White parchment chests join plaster light pendants that Ostrander bought in Paris to complete the splashy gallery-like setting.

In the living area, conceptual artist Mel Bochner’s graphic, word piece painting sets the stage for one of the family’s favorite pastimes: watching films on a 180-inch projection screen. “We didn’t want a dedicated theater space so David incorporated a hidden screen into the living area,” the wife says. “We push a button for the dark-out shades and screen to appear.” Nearby, the powder room with its midnight-blue ceiling and protruding stripe walls made of Calacatta Cielo and Azul Extra marble is a showstopper. The designer’s passion for blue expresses high style in the jewel box of an open kitchen and dining area. Ostrander kept the original cabinetry but refinished it in deep rich tones with custom bronze hardware. The backsplash, countertops and island are made of quartzite with the backside of the island

framing a dining banquette. The custom walnut dining table and vintage Italian chairs easily seat large family gatherings. “The bar is built into a wall that backs up to the butler’s pantry,” the wife says. “The center art lifts into the ceiling so the bartender can also serve drinks from inside the pantry.” Blues and grays reappear in the master bedroom, where a coffered ceiling in French blue tops walls wrapped with a “slub silk” texture executed in Venetian plaster. repeat in the master bath clad in Calacatta marble. Outside, the pool area is a popular gathering spot for the family, including the dogs. Chaise lounges surround the infinity pool and spa near where the owners added a sun beach. “It’s a dog beach now,” the wife says. “We love it so much.” After trial and error using specialty contractors and artisans from around the world, the team turned a spec house into a grand showplace, creating a sophisticated, collected, but comfortable beach essence. “We joined two styles into one spectacular space,” Ostrander says.

IN PERFECT HARMONY A REFLECTION OF FLORIDA’S WARM SUNLIGHT AND GLISTENING GULF, A NAPLES HOME CELEBRATES COASTAL LIVING WITH COMFORTABLE INTERIORS AND FLAWLESS DETAILS
S
ome of the owner’s fondest memories are framed with Florida Gulf Coast family vacations. So when he and his wife were looking to shift their permanent residence from Wisconsin, choosing Florida’s west
coast was a breeze. Built on one of the last remaining lots inside the exclusive Bay Colony in Naples, the owners wanted the 6,200-square-foot home to look and feel like it belonged in Florida. To find the perfect harmony in their vision — a balance of classic, timeless design with comfortable, coastal interiors — the couple teamed up with interior designer Sally Richardson. The homeowners wanted interesting pieces with

attention paid to all the details, and so with nearly 20 years in the business, an artistic background and a love for color, Richardson knew this would be a fun collaboration from the start. Inviting with landscape that reflects Florida’s native species, the home is designed with a classic exterior accentuated with beautiful trim details in a modern palette of gray tones and a rich mahogany entry door. Step inside, where a vibrant glass chandelier immediately captivates in an expansive foyer. As an unveiling to the home’s coastal color palette, the glass fixture radiates rich cobalt blues and greens blended with orange, aqua and chartreuse. White European oak flooring leads the way to the great room, where a 25-foot-high ceiling and a spacious floor plan encompasses not only the family room but the adjacent dining area and kitchen as well. To collectively elevate the home’s blue and white interior palette, colorful Reef Illusion botanical prints and a white-framed, blue aquatic mural dot the warm gray walls. bring the cobalt blue hues further into the space. As puzzle aficionados, the owners specifically chose the distressed solid pine Restoration Hardware cocktail table for its slender drawers, which perfectly hold their incomplete masterpieces. As the heart of the home, the cool white kitchen is a favorite gathering place for the owners, who love to cook for family and friends. Casual in nature, leather-clad counter stools from Jessica Charles pull up to a workable and enjoyable spot for both chefs and onlookers. To bring the tropical landscape and airy coastal vibe into the living room, Richardson, inspired by beach towels, created fanciful peacock blue and cream color drapes in silk to balance the formality. Two Audubon prints of a flamingo and heron are colorized to match the coral color of the hand-knotted Turkish ikat motif area rug and the iridescent blue accents. Blue hues continue in the dining area with rich embroidered Thibaut textiles that back Highland House chairs lining the European white oak trestle table. In a nod to the beach, the designer makes the room’s centerpiece a stunning Ro Sham Beaux chandelier with more than 1,000 white jade beads circled by rings of natural hemp.
“I felt that using pops of white throughout the home heightened the colors,” interior designer Sally Richardson says. White shagreen mirrors with brass detailing offer a touch of texture in the dining area, where Old Biscayne Designs’ trestle table seats large and small gatherings.

Tranquility continues in the master bath, where a striking Kohler tub, dual sinks and azul calcite countertops echo the water theme. hat better way to ensure your dream home, then to design it yourself? That was interior designer Wendy Berry’s task for her new Kalea Bay condo overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a contrasting
juxtaposition for Berry, whose primary home in Ohio is in many ways the antithesis of this Naples dwelling in Florida. Perched on the 18th floor, the 3,800-square-foot home boasts unobstructed views of a narrow inlet with white sand beaches on either side. Sanibel is visible on a clear day and so is Wiggins Pass.
Wendy Berry_1805 Kalea Bay_NP32_final.indd 2
1/30/19 2:40 PM
A true representation of Berry’s design ideology, the home is comfortable, eclectic and calm. “You could pick a lot of beautiful things, but you need to see beyond each piece and how it works overall,” Berry says. “I look at things as a whole, not individually.” Such is the case in the sprawling great room, where Berry framed distinct sections with a combination of ceiling details and furniture arrangements. A spacious living area immediately invites relaxation. There’s nothing busy or cluttered about it, just tasteful positioning of purposefully chosen pieces in a setting for conversation and, sometimes, a game of chess. “My husband is 6’4 and I’m 5’10 so we’re tall people and we have tall children,” Berry says. “Everyone just wanted a space to kind of plop down on a big sectional that’s really super deep and comfortable enough for eight.” The custom cocktail table helps to infuse the casual space with a polished flavor, incorporating handscraped rift, white oak, and a heavy coat of high-gloss white paint. Black, metal supports buttress the table on

all four sides. “I always try to infuse the casual with the polished, and kind of switch back and forth with metal finishes so that nothing becomes boring or expected,” the designer says. Berry staged a good amount of art throughout the home, each piece hand-picked and strategically placed. Fragile, yet hefty live coral — a piece Berry acquired in Capri, Italy — poses in front of a blue wall niche, off to the side but undoubtedly on display. Nearby, the kitchen itself is an artistic composition. White cabinetry and rows of classic white, subway tiles line the back wall, while black and stainless steel appliances create a strikng complementary contrast.

Meriting a second and third glance, artist Phillip Buller’s beach scene, Big Drink, from Quidley & Co. provides the focal
point in the dining area. “He does it in layers,” Berry says. “It calmly put every single color on that wall in a huge fashion.” He paints through a screen incorporating various muted elements only visible when the viewer’s perspective changes.

In the master bedroom, Bernhardt’s bedside chests crafted in a beachy white oak are topped by Ralph Lauren lamps. A rift white oak wall provides the backdrop for an upholstered bed from Theodore Alexander, while a wool area rug from Loloi grounds the space in warmth.
“To mix in warm colors, I went back to a beachy wood hue with illuminated, exposed cantilever shelves,” Berry says. The adjacent dining area exudes a somewhat informal aura. It’s a place to lounge, pull out the laptop, or watch the game — the space yields a full view of the TV across the great room. Huddled around a custom, whitewashed, raw wood table, covered chairs and banquettes interrupt the dominating white of the kitchen with Romo’s still so elegant, wide-striped pattern. Tranquil tones wrap the master suite, where mesmerizing views instantly engage the eye. “I wanted it to be almost spa-like,” Berry says. The accent wall is crafted of rift white oak with a semi-gloss sheen placed in a herringbone fashion, a variation of the lateral lines made by oak ceiling beams that direct attention outside. A bold splurge of color appears on the wall leading to the master bath. As if Berry saved all occurrences of

color for this one instance, the Marco Grassi painting makes a statement of elegant eccentricity. A study in luxurious relaxation, the master bath relapses into an orderly fashion where white dominates. Outside, the balcony provides a calm space that embraces the view beyond. The area is cooled with tones of gray and the presence of a natural limestone set in a herringbone pattern. “I love this place … this is home inside and out,” Berry says.

Porcelain marble lines the countertops, walls and flooring in the master bath. “The shower is so huge, I wanted it
to be something interesting,” the designer says. “I picked out a really pretty laser-cut geometric tile that’s a marble for the floor and I took it up the back wall.” Beveled porcelain sidewalls and a cantilevered bench add the fi nishing touches.

GRACEFUL grandeur A MEDITERRANEAN-MEETS-MODERN MAKEOVER IN NAPLES’ POSH BAY COLONY COMMUNITY BLENDS A TUSCAN FOUNDATION WITH TRADITIONAL TWISTS
A
Greco-Roman pedigree defines the exterior of this sprawling 8,000-square-foot
home in the gated Bay Colony enclave. Its red clay roof tiles, towering Doric columns, stucco exteriors and masonry balconies exude Old World and Old Naples aesthetics. “The owners, native MidWesterners, were living in a condo waiting for the perfect opportunity,” says interior designer Bethany O’Neil, also a mid-western native, who had been referred to the couple by a realtor as well as a mutual friend. The couple reached out to O’Neil after they purchased the home, now their permanent winter retreat. The house had been remodeled several times in phases that introduced a juxtaposition of styles along the way — from Mediterranean to Modern — including an Asian-inspired mahogany entry door. “My job was to neutralize the interior without making it too traditional,” the designer says. O’Neil and her team began working on the project revolving around plans to de-Tuscanize and balance interior details. Next, she created a wow factor in the sunken great room with the design of a majestic fireplace and mantel to match the grandeur and scale of the space with soaring 24-foot-high ceilings.

Working with the owners’ preference for a muted palette to echo the surrounding lush green landscape, one of O’Neil’s biggest challenges was balancing gray tones with beiges and greens. She blended linen and velvet textiles, and anchored the rooms with wood furnishings. “I haven’t worked with dark woods for a long time,” O’Neil says. “I’m seeing a coming back.” Drawn to painted European antiques, she admits, “It pushed me out of my comfort area. I had to figure out how to make it rich and inviting.” A combination of walnut and Thassos snowhite marble, the flooring remained in place. With alabaster lamps and quartz accents, she brought the glam into the living areas with a twist

on traditional. The dramatic effect of the sunken great room, and a wall of French doors that open to the swimming pool is only upstaged by the spiral stairway made from iron balusters, walnut bannisters and Thassos treads and risers. An eclectic array of classic and modern aesthetics in the dining room is an understated study in contrasts, pairing traditional floral wall coverings and framed antique botanical prints with a shimmering, contemporary quartz-encrusted starfish chandelier and crystal lamps. Views of the pergola offer a glimpse of the vibrant rose trees that welcome pops of heady pink into the formal dining room. In the nearby breakfast area, walls were removed and doors re-centered to frame views of the pergola, hedged lawns and tree line beyond. O’Neil sold the homeowners on the idea of furnishing the space with a pair of upholstered sofas as if they were booths. Doubling as a social gathering area when the adult children visit, or when the couple wishes to read the paper with morning coffee, there’s more to sitting at a kitchen table besides eating.

Architectural elements subliminally dominate other rooms, too, like the home office, located on the ground floor, down a hallway off of the foyer, where soaring Doric columns are reflected in the mirror above a vintage demilune cabinet. Dedicated to the husband’s study, the room is appointed with a small siting area and lounge chair around a Lucite conversation table, and equipped with a wet bar. On the second floor, the supple curves of the Mediterranean balcony balusters, seen through the sundeck’s French doors, are juxtaposed with the angular lines of the Lillian August four-poster bed — a

Textures, textiles and finishes set the tone-on-tone palette in a spacious upper-level guest suite. centerpiece of the upper-level guest suite. “The scale of this room was a good one to feature the more modern bed,” says O’Neil, who mixed styles by adding Gustavian-inspired bed chests and bureaus. Again, the muted earth-toned palette allows the splendor of the surrounding outdoor green space to become the focal point, while a stunning poolside pergola shapes the perfect open-air social space. “It’s all about the clients and what they want,” O’Neil says. “They trusted me to hold their hands, saying: ‘You’re going to love this’ … and they do!”

a home to love FROM THE DOWNTOWN CHIC LIFESTYLE TO THE FANTASTIC GULF VIEWS, THIS NAPLES SPEC HOME IS BURSTING WITH VIBRANCY AND BRIMMING WITH NATURAL ELEMENTS FROM THE OUTSIDE IN
I
t seems like yesterday that the VIV Homes design team began this Naples spec home project. Now,
two years later, a labor of love results in a day-dreamy reality that embraces the natural world with elements of surprise in every space. With nearly 8,500 square feet, the allure of this Naples home captures the essence of its Aqualane Shores community with branching streets and gracious properties linked by individual waterways that offer direct access to the Gulf of Mexico. Working closely together, the design team made enormous strides in creating an environment that is both relaxing and recreational. The timeless architecture, white stucco and rich mahogany doors of this British West Indies style house lend itself to the outdoors with an enchanting sub-tropical setting. Inside, a neutral palette creates a backdrop of soft elements and natural accents to promote a seamless flow that blurs the boundaries between inside and out. Everything is aligned symmetrically with high ceilings and windows that frame the exterior,
LEFT:
The exterior of the home is grand with large columns
and a path of varietal silver and gray travertine pavers that speak to the gray Stone Mountain Blend roofing. Bands of lush green grass intercept stone pavers to create dramatic curb appeal while bountiful native foliage skirt the premises.

allowing picture-perfect views. A little dimension goes a long way as wood ceiling beams are stained in pickling whitewash to promote a modest rustic flair. Meant to be comfortable, oversized furnishings in pale-beige linen shape a conversation grouping. Armed with quiet colors and a gentle pattern, clusters of throw pillows from Laura Park give rise to the natural setting of the space. In an effort to incorporate a coastal element, a trio of chandeliers wrapped with tiny woven coco beads in soft white offers a beachy appeal. Not just a place for cookery but also a place for guests to gather, the kitchen is expansive, practical and aesthetically appealing with sleek white cabinetry that lines the walls. And in the center of it all, an oversized Calacatta marble waterfall island swirls with striations of dark gray and warm brown.

Textures are abundant in the adjacent dining area styled with an oak dining table topped in polished white lacquer and centered with linen slipcovered chairs. The rustic yet modern oak wall unit — a practical built-in with two Sub-Zero wine coolers — adds a touch of sophistication with its matte shale with pewter glaze, while a sisal area rug from Dash & Albert continues the organic vibe. Part of the home’s charm is the aged furnishings that are infused throughout. In the study, a dark wood sideboard is distinctive with masculine appeal that pulls warmth into the room. A little bit of history dwells with a vintage map of Florida that dots the wall, while a mesh wrought iron globe captures attention in the corner. Stepping into the master bath is like stepping into a five-star retreat. An oversized shower and floor-to-ceiling marble tiles complement the pearl gray marble countertops and crisp white cabinetry. With that, the porcelain

flooring in “Perfect White” lends itself to the style and elegance the design team had in mind. Tranquility prevails in the master bedroom with French doors that open up to a spellbinding view. Soft tones and textures canvas the private space — all pioneered for excellent slumber. Carefully selected, the bed’s white, tufted headboard is sumptuous while complementing the tufted bench at its foot. Gray and blue accent pillows create connectivity with the sky and water while dark mahogany bedside chests add contrast to the space.

Outside, the loggia is all encompassing with a kitchen, dining area, infinity pool, fire pit, and a cozy entertainment area with a fireplace and TV. The open-air space is styled with traditional rattan furniture that envelops a glass dining table from Ralph Lauren. Shellstone pavers naturally influence the space while a wood tongue-and-groove ceiling grants dimension. In the outdoor living area, comfortable furnishings shape a hearthside social grouping. With hints of nature sprinkled about, the organic teak cocktail table’s sculptural shape becomes a conversation piece. Going above and beyond had purpose for the VIV Home design team — reaching unprecedented heights of excellent style while delivering the ultimate surreal lifestyle in a home to love. ABOVE:

Florida winter getaway, they honed in on Naples for its upscale shops and fine restaurants and, specifically, on Kalea Bay, a luxury high-rise waterfront development. But it was the views of the Gulf of Mexico from the 3,500-square-foot condo that sealed the deal. “It had that ‘wow’ factor right away,” Anna says. “This area is so beautiful, the colors of the water, the sunset. It was important to us that you could see it all.” Designer Karen Larson came on board, with her colleagues Anna Fleming-Neely and Mackenzie Lowe, to help personalize the designer-ready condo. “It was new construction, a clean slate for us,” Larson says. “The Cambrons were looking to

customize it to their taste. Tim has a passion for antique boats and nautical elements, while Anna is Southern and elegant, with a touch of formality.” Nautical influences come into play right away in shiplap wall and ceiling finishes that define seating and eating areas in the open floor plan. The coastal palette of pale blues and beiges accented with pops of nautical navy is on an even keel in the living area, where low-profile furnishings keep ocean views clear and airy. “The condo feels wide open, with lots of glass, and whether you’re indoors or outdoors, it feels like you’re sitting on the Gulf of Mexico,” Tim says. Nautical touches flow through to the dining area and kitchen beyond. Triple lanterns above the waterfall-edge quartz island play off the cerused oak dining table’s chrome base nearby. “Her (Anna’s) Southern roots come out in the more traditional trellis-patterned host chairs, and in the graceful chandelier with suspended rock crystals,” Larson says.

The home’s private spaces are equally thought-out. Calming gray tones and soft supple fabrics style the guest room, where an intimate sitting area provides the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy a good book. The palette shifts to shades of muted teal in the serene master bedroom with its vertical stripe burlap-and-foil wall finish. “We continue the green tones into the master bath, where we framed out an area around the vessel tub with custom millwork, and accented it with a grass cloth treatment, LED accent lighting, and cascading crystals,” Larson says. A circular shell-framed mirror recalls the nautical aura found throughout the home. Larson feels the condo now reflects the couple’s combined passions well. “Elegant southern charm is relocated to a luxury coastal home,” she says. “It’s a perfect mix.”

t has been said that Suzanne Lovell, an internationally recognized, high-end residential interior designer for 25 years, practices at that intersection between
architecture and interiors, design and fine art. A trained architect and designer comfortable with contemporary or traditional points of view, she embodies a sensibility which encompasses fine art as an integral part of design. Lovell is just as happy attending Art Basel as she is finding ways to knock down walls. To create this spectacular, 8,500-square-foot Gulf Coast penthouse in Naples, Fla., Lovell and her design team began at that intersection. Wearing her architectural hat, and with a dark pencil, the designer drew out the lines that would capture wide Gulf views for public and many private spaces … and then she drew an “X” through any walls that got in the way. Lovell created a “wooden box” into which the back of the kitchen would be nestled and more

And then there is the art. “These are clients whom I have known for years,” Lovell says. “This is our third residence together … and we have a wonderful, reciprocal understanding.” The designer was familiar with and even helped the couple to amass a collection of fine art, ranging from Impressionist painting to Modern photography. “Because art

favorites. The primary colors in the painting appear innocently playful above the Ming-style console in ivory cashew lacquer; while underneath, Marc Bankowsky’s “Pieds de Bouc” stools in Mongolian lamb fur, lend a whimsical touch. A cerused oak-slatted ceiling with cached light forms the “wooden box” interior perimeter and a structural support column appears softer when covered in suede-leather panels. The great room expands in luxury when guided by undulating lines of yellow, gray and black grounded by polished onyx flooring. A sofa wrapped in ivory cotton by Robert Crowder and four club chairs, group neatly around a bespoke travertine and glass cocktail table. Designed by Lovell, the table features shallow recessed bowls that contain the owners’ beloved collection of seashells. Round ottomans clad in Tiger Bouclé by Le Manach and John Boone’s crackled-ivory lacquered side table offer a hint of the exotic, as do a pairing of antique chairs designed by Carlo Bugatti. Cached behind the great room, the kitchen is a functional jewel custom-designed by De Giulio Kitchen Design. It features counters topped in quartzite and sleek cabinetry created with glass, stainless steel and wood.

“IN THE DESIGN INDUSTRY, YOU NEED TO GO FURTHER THAN JUST POSITIONING SOFAS AND CHAIRS,” INTERIOR DESIGNER SUZANNE LOVELL SAYS. “ART AND OBJECTS WILL SPEAK VOLUMES ABOUT WHO YOU ARE.”
Local artist Jeff Koons’ “Split Rocker Vase” crowns the island bar, where counter stools tuck seamlessly beneath it and elegant pendants twinkle above just like upended chalices. The designer continues to showcase the homeowners’ fine art collection with a mixed media work by artist Jason Middlebrook that hangs above a bar near the dining area. Here, perched upon its own medallion amid an expanse of Venetian terrazzo-patterned flooring, rests a bleached-oak dining table inset with bronze butterflies that match the brass base. Elegant Romanesque chairs from Michael Taylor Design surround the table poised beneath a curving vine chandelier that is custom created by artist Jeff Zimmerman. It was clear throughout the design process that Lovell loved assisting her clients in finding new works and furnishings to fit their beautiful Naples residence. “Just as I hope to choose design pieces that showcase the creator at the very top of their talents, I carry the same philosophy with the artwork that adorns these spaces,” she says. “Whether in antiques or in fine art, the best is worth it.”

he amazing ocean views and plush green scenery surrounding Naples, Fla., have always been a cause for celebration, and such was
the inspiration for this modern dwelling in the posh neighborhood of Parkshore. Perched high in a tower along the beach, this extraordinary penthouse boasts panoramic vistas of the Gulf of Mexico, the shimmering Naples Bay area, and the charming little hamlet known as Venetian Village. “The basis of this design is a celebration of phenomenal views,” says interior designer Michelle Hobbs, who worked with her team to conceptualize the overall design plan and furnish every room from top to bottom. “The home is modern in its sensibilities and aesthetic, and the spaces have an exuberance created by splayed walls and angular features.” With 6,648 square feet of interior space and more than 2,000 square feet of outdoor terrace, breathtaking sunsets are to be enjoyed year-round. Once inside, numerous specialty finishes generate a dramatic richness throughout. Whether highly textured or velvety subtle, the custom plaster work was key to Hobbs’ creative approach. ABOVE:

In this sleek multi-functional kitchen, quartzite and granite from UMI Naples complement the espresso-stained, mirror-lacquered cabinetry by Harden House. The island is utility friendly with both stainless steel and butcher-block surfaces that ensure professional-level gourmet adventures.
“The living room is very soothing and connects the indoors with the outdoors,” Hobbs says. The custom finishes give the walls the look of crushed glistening shells in the sand, while tranquil hues of white, green and blue dominate the space. White leather sofas and plush swivel chairs offer plenty of seating atop the soft teal area rug that exudes the feel of walking on sugar-fine sand. A dramatic elevator entry sits in prelude to what lies beyond. Just inside, the foyer hallway allows the first peek of the water views as the eyes sweep around the space. The mesmerizing space features a silver-leaf ceiling treatment and is showcased by a wine room boasting a sleek cable bottle display. In the kitchen beyond, functionality is the defining element with state-of-the-art appliances. The adjacent dining room offers an ideal setting for intimate family gatherings as well as large-scale entertaining. With incredible 270-degree views that stretch from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the Everglades, the master bedroom beckons at day’s end. The evening ambiance is magical with the scintillation of seemingly endless lights aglow in the vibrant community far below. “During the entire project, I imagined the future homeowners entertaining family and friends,” Hobbs says. “But undoubtedly — beyond enjoying the beach, the pool and the spa — the family who lives here will relish in all the spectacular views this wonderful home has to offer.”

or designers Faith Fix and Alex Thies by their new clients. The owners clarified themselves with the hopes that their soon-to-be-built, Fort Myers beachfront home would be casual, warm, traditional and timeless. “And that is just what we got — this is everything we have dreamed of,” the Midwest-based owner says. But the two-year project was definitely complicated. Upon builder Tom Potter’s recommendation, the Freestyle designers joined the team alongside residential designer the

together. “Even the color choices were a part of the physical setting,” says Thies, the lead designer. “With a palette lifted from the water, sand, sky and life along the beach, the integration feels like a natural evolution.” There’s something else that delights the designer. “The original house was 100 years old. We were able to salvage some of its architectural elements and design them into the new home,” says Thies in reference to the mullioned glass panels flanking the great room’s built-in and original window millwork turned into picture frames. But the concept of modern casual elegance takes over from there. Ground-level garages, along with pickleball and shuffleboard courts, make use of code-necessitated non-living space. On the main level, the entry steps into a foyer where an Escher-like stairway ascends with multiple landings — each presenting with panoramic views and purposefully open rooms.

“You could spend all day in the great room,” the owner says. The first of two seating groups styled with a Kravet sofa in blue-gray chenille and steel-blue, sawed-oak framed chairs, feels slightly formal. In the adjacent “sipping area,” a wire-brushed oak table, custom-designed and elevated to a Euro-height, is circled by swivel club chairs to shape a social spot to enjoy an evening glass of wine. “To set the dining area apart, but avoid separating it with impediments to the view, we lowered the dining room’s ceiling and centered the table on a beautiful shell stone inlay,” the designer says. It only takes a turn of the head to find the kitchen, the wine bar, and a family-friendly table ready for enjoyment. The artistic striae of the waterfall counter merges seamlessly with a unique walnut table seating six. In shades of white and pale blue, Jessica Charles’ channel-backed counter stools complement the cabinetry.

“This house was built with the pool and the sea at its center,” Thies says. Wrapping around a lap pool with its sunken spa, the view from the loggia extends beyond the balmy Gulf to the horizon. Able to be cached behind automatic screening, the loggia, with its whitewashed cypress swing and hearthside social grouping, provides the perfect spot for open-air entertainment. “We had been coming to this part of the country for over 20 years,” says the couple, who’ve owned several condos in the area along the way. “But at last, this feels like home.” Hoping to make it a frequent destination for their children and eventually, grandchildren, the owners call this their “legacy home … a place for the generations.”

“PART OF THE JOY OF BEING IN THIS BUSINESS IS GETTING TO KNOW MY CLIENTS AND THEIR STYLES IN ORDER TO FIND SOURCES TO MAKE THEIR HOMES LOOK BETTER THAN THEY COULD EVEN KNOW THEY WANTED,” INTERIOR DESIGNER CONSTANCE DAVIDSON SAYS.
A
s you drive down the private sandy lane past the beachfront homes, you arrive at this
Tropical Modern facade. That’s the style architect Joyce Owens bestowed upon this 4,000-square-foot home with an additional 1,100-square-feet of balconies overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. “Tropical Modern subtly borrows references from historical architecture while at the same time being very contemporary,” Owens says. Because her European clients appreciate the clean, sleek lines of their residence abroad, they wanted their new Florida vacation home to feel the same. But they also wanted it to be very comfortable to accommodate their quiet lifestyle. With privacy a main concern, the architect selected a front door featuring an aluminum frame and matte aluminum panel. “We chose the aluminum because we knew it would look very sleek, cool and modern,” Owens says. With the living areas on the second floor where there’s a stunning view of beach and water, privacy was less of a concern so she opted for large windows and glass doors that slide open to welcome panoramic water views, plenty of light and cross breezes.

Artist Jeff Schaller’s provocative encaustic wall art combines words and images to add a touch of whimsy in the living room. The designer chose the classic arc floor lamp to continue the movement in this room, while warm and cool colors juxtapose with warm wood and shiny surfaces to help soften the modern decor.

“THIS WAS A PARTICULARLY INTERESTING PROJECT FOR US BECAUSE MY FIRM NOT ONLY DESIGNED THE BUILDING BUT WE WERE ALSO THE INTERIOR ARCHITECTS THAT DESIGNED THE KITCHEN, THE BATHS, THE LIGHTING AND THE STAIRWAY,” ARCHITECT JOYCE OWENS SAYS. “IT LET US KEEP THE BIG PICTURE IN MIND.”

“I LIKE THAT MODERN ARCHITECTURE GIVES YOU MORE FLEXIBILITY THAN TRADITIONAL,” THE ARCHITECT SAYS. “YOU CAN PLAY WITH THE FORMS AND SHAPES OF THE BUILDING IN ORDER TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SPACE AND THE WAY THE CLIENTS WILL LIVE IN THEIR NEW HOME.”
Climb the stairway to the third floor, where a balcony overlooks the living areas. Walk along it to find the master bedroom tucked behind a wood-stained barn door that creates a six-foot-wide entrance to the clients’ private quarters. This room is a favorite spot for the couple to enjoy a glass of wine overlooking the beach and the Gulf of Mexico. Davidson selected comfortable pieces to furnish this cozy private space including the custom-designed bed and a pair of Herman Miller chairs upholstered in a cool, water blue. “The custom area rug atop oak wood flooring is designed to create movement like water against sand,” the designer says. The sun, the Gulf breezes and the captivating views blur the boundaries between inside and out. “It doesn’t matter where you look when you are in this house … you know you’re in the tropics.” Owens says. than meets the eye. “My client is young and vivacious, and she wanted something more exotic and fun,” interior designer Sherri DuPont says. “She has spent time in the Mediterranean, at an Italian resort that had Moroccan-influenced architecture, and while she wanted an island home, she also wanted that lively Moroccan feeling.” Exterior architectural embellishments include shutters, corbels, columns with decorative panels, touches of mahogany, and railings with intricate spider-web details that hint of Moroccan patterning. “A Caribbean Moorish style is not that common, and I love it,” DuPont says. This dream house, however, did not come about without its challenges. Wanting to live near the beach, the couple bought a lot in the established Naples’ Port Royal neighborhood a half-dozen years ago, and began planning their 10,000-square-foot vacation home. “The whole design process took patience on their part, because they didn’t want their home to be divorced from the ground,” architect Jonathan Kukk says. “At that time, flood maps were to be rewritten — we waited for that to happen and it panned out.”

INTERIOR DESIGNER SHERRI DUPONT DESIGNED THE STAIRWAY WITH PAINTED SPINDLES, DARK WOOD BANISTER, STAINED-WOOD TREADS, CONTRASTING COVE MOLDINGS, AND WAINSCOTING ON THE WALLS. THE JUTE STAIR RUNNER ADDS CHARACTER AND DRESSES THE AREA DOWN.
As such, the home flows seamlessly outside. “The outdoor area and pool are inviting because they are on the same level,” builder Joe Smallwood says. “Open up all the sliding doors and it becomes one big integrated area that’s really nice.” Inside, lustrous acacia wood flooring flows from the entry into the living room wrapped with walls in a warm, pale gray, and finished with a coffered ceiling and white-paneled details. Furnishings repeat the blue-and white color scheme, spiced up with a little Moroccan flavor. “Hickory Chair crafted a custom sofa for us with the wide tape and nail-head detail on the inside of the arms and across the back,” DuPont says. “That adds a little Moroccan feeling, and the pillows, with a Moroccan influence, are embroidered in a tracery pattern.”

Hickory Chair’s sofa and lounge chairs in a pale-blue blend by Calvin Fabrics shape a grouping in the living room. The spindles on Hickory White’s armchair add a twist to the mix, while whitewashed woven vines give an earthy feel atop the limestone cocktail table from Gabby.
A lofty beamed ceiling crowns the family room, where walls in a soothing pale linen hue works calmly with the white woodwork. Because many of the textiles are white, a Sunbrella fabric is used for upholstery, and on the sofa, it’s a double-cloth matelasse texture set off with navy cording. “Creating the room’s color scheme is the Quadrille China Seas fabric that covers the back of the lounge chair,” DuPont says. “We used every scrap for accent pillows.” Playful hearthside stools add whimsy to a room that could otherwise be very formal. Nearby, the kitchen features Shaker-style white cabinetry with an extra trim detail, quartz countertops, and a center island topped with stained maple to match the mahogany flooring. An attractive detail, the white subway tile

It’s similar to a skylight, but a little fancier,” Kukk says. Exuding a fun Florida feel, the bedrooms reintroduce the blue-and-white scheme, with textiles that incorporate playful geometric designs. “The Vanguard bed is the centerpiece in the master suite,” DuPont says. “We started off with a linen/cotton screened print by Schumacher & Co. for a duvet and the small paisley on the king shams.” Spaciousness and symmetry style the master bath, where a deep soaking tub is framed by a

picturesque bay window. “There’s also a pop-up in the ceiling, and the interior designer did a beautiful inlay in stone for a tile rug,” Kukk says. In a daughter’s room, the valance fabric was the starting point. “That’s where the navy, white and off-white color scheme came from, and we felt that the Vanguard bed with the navy blue linen/rayon upholstered headboard would be appropriate,” DuPont says. “Those colors are so Mediterranean with the addition of that deep aqua, and again, we chose shapes for the headboard and bench that have an almost Moroccan feel to them.” The builder sums up the project to perfection: “It’s a really magnificent home and it was a very detailed process to make sure that it was everything the owners wanted,” Smallwood says. “The execution had to be done to a high level to get the end result.”

AN EYE FOR PERFECTION A MARRIAGE BETWEEN CONTEMPORARY AND TRANSITIONAL STYLES YIELDS COMFORT AND LUXURY IN THIS QUAIL WEST HOME IN NAPLES

home stands, was an unusually large, lakeside parcel of land that builder John McGarvey had his eye on it and an idea in mind for the ideal home.

rom the inception of this project, builder John McGarvey collaborated with interior designer Tina Margrander to create this home taking full advantage of the stunning lakeside views. “I wanted the
home to flow from the exterior through the interior and out to the pool area and beyond. We needed a good designer for that to work,” McGarvey says. A soft gray facade with bright white trim pairs with blue-gray Bahamian shutters and cupolas to add a relaxed Caribbean vibe to this elegant 5,300-square-foot home in the exclusive community of Quail West in North Naples. The impressive open great room is made even more dramatic by the coffered ceiling that gives the illusion of floating “clouds.” The designer kept the living area at human scale by careful placement of Vanguard’s oversized yet low-profile furnishings.

massive slate tile roof line. “We opted for a charcoal colored roof. Some color tones are a little more forgiving than others,” Margrander says. Step inside, where large paneled windows, glass doors and skylights allow natural light to stream throughout the home. For some privacy and a dash of charm, Margrander added horizontal wood slats to the 10-foot-high mahogany wood and glass front door. While resembling a stylish five-star resort, the home’s open concept exudes a “kick off your shoes” attitude. In the great room, pocketed sliding doors nearly erase the lines to blur the boundaries between inside and out. A 13-foot-high coffered ceiling conceals LED strip lights to further expand the dramatic look. Margrander designed the media cabinet with a contemporary feel in mind. “It’s a grid of cubby boxes placed strategically and filled with mixed accessories. The textured grass cloth wallpaper behind it adds depth to the unit,” the designer says. Upholstered in brushed cotton, low-profile sofas pair with leather-clad lounge chairs to shape a comfortable social grouping.

European white oak flooring flows through to the kitchen, where the white shaker cabinetry is glazed in a soft gray wash. Counter stools are low so as not to obstruct the garden view through the picturesque window that overlooks a tropical courtyard and fountain. “The legs on the counter stools and the base of the island are stained dark to echo the media unit in the adjacent great room,” the designer says. Margrander designed the dining area to be fun and functional. The custom cabinetry lined with mirrors adds a reflective quality to the playful space that opens to the outdoor living area. To create the ultimate oasis, the marbled, open-concept shower in the spa-like master bath is afforded a full view of the lush, private, walled garden. Transom windows add symmetry and additional natural light into the clean, sleek space. Soft tones repeat in the master bedroom, where soothing greenish-gray walls wrap the private space in comfort. Crisp, luxurious linens cover the bed styled with faux ostrich leather inserts on its headboard. Sea salt and gray hues color the area rug underfoot to complete the room’s muted look of luxury. On the loggia framed by palm trees and ornamental plants, the double-sided, linear fireplace — perfect for those few chilly nights in South Florida — is a beautiful focal point and a favorite gathering place. “The outdoor space is very comfortable and livable, and it is perfect for entertaining with so many places to sit and enjoy the view,” Margrander says.
“TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY MAKES SO MANY THINGS EASY FOR THE HOMEOWNER,” BUILDER JOHN MCGARVEY SAYS. “WITH THIS HOME’S SECURITY AND SURVEILLANCE, AND WHEN STORMS THREATEN ONE TOUCH SECURES THE LOGGIA, THE OWNER’S MIND IS ALWAYS AT EASE.”

he desire to build a magnificent dream home quickly became a reality for one Naples couple
when they met local builder John Covelli, President and CEO of Covelli Development Group. John first met these homeowners when they previously purchased one of his model homes in the Estuary at Grey Oaks. Fast-forward several years, the couple decided they wanted something a bit more private with enough land to give them the opportunity to build the perfect home for themselves and their family. “One of the main goals for this couple was to have a home with sprawling land in an area that offered great access to the Naples beaches, movie theaters, shopping and restaurants,” Covelli says. “Location wise, the exclusive community of Pine Ridge Estates was certain to satisfy all of those requests, as well as providing easy proximity to numerous private and public schools, and unlimited golf course opportunities.”

Trusting John’s recommendation, the couple discovered a stellar lakefront property and contracted Covelli Development Group to build this spectacular home consisting of 9,200 square feet under air and over 12,000 square feet under roof. This extraordinary piece of paradise — more than two-and-a-half sprawling acres nestled amidst the posh setting of Pine Ridge Estates — boasts sweeping panoramic vistas to the west overlooking Mockingbird Lake that allow for unparalleled sunset views that light up the evening skies. Commanding attention from the very first glimpse, this home’s exterior effortlessly combines classic architecture and timeless traditional style with cutting-edge modern amenities. A driveway lined with Royal palm trees introduces the house’s graceful symmetry and creates a dramatic prelude to the interior spaces that await. “I wanted to create a home with balance that had a peaceful open flow throughout,” Covelli says.

An air of distinction all its own resonates in the living room styled with a marble fireplace, tastefully appointed furnishings including a handsome pair of mahogany chests and exquisite upholstered pieces, and a custom-crafted coffered ceiling. The dining room follows suit with its opulent flooring, detailed beam ceiling, and an extraordinary wine room that spans from one wall to another. “There are custom furnishings throughout the home that are designed and built by Tony Myers of New Age Design,” Covelli says. “We brought in Tony as we often do in many of our homes. He is an extremely gifted craftsman who understands scale and design. This provides wonderful pieces for the homeowner and eliminates an extensive search for lamp tables and cocktail tables that would scale well and fit nicely within the interior scheme.”

The kitchen — a favorite family gathering space — is complete with two marble-topped islands and plenty of room for cooking and entertaining. Beyond, the family room offers the perfect spot for casual fun with walls of glass that open to the loggia. And as the sun sets over the lake and the couple retreats at day’s end, there’s no better place to unwind than the spacious serenity of the master suite. Soft creamy hues wrap the private space that beckons relaxation. Outside, the loggia is the perfect entertainment space that includes a state-of-the-art Wolf grill for festive get-togethers. A custom, tongue-and-groove coffered ceiling defines the open-air space from above, while powered screens that encapsulate the area during sultry evenings allow tropical breezes to flow through. Automated drop-down hurricane shutters enclose the space at the touch of a button if necessary. “This project was a true collaboration with the owners who greatly influenced the many pieces we incorporated in the home that are reflective of their extensive travel throughout parts of Asia,” Covelli says. “We wanted this home to suit their personalities while offering a warm, welcoming place for friends and family … but most importantly, we wanted to be certain that we left them wanting for nothing.” N
