On The Cover Boca Raton artist Stacey Mandell learned Gregg Shorthand, an elegant form of abbreviated writing, when she worked as a law clerk in her native Illinois. Since 2017, she has been infusing her canvases with shorthand phrases from poetry, the U.S. Constitution, and positive affirmations such as Embrace Love and Kindness, the mixed-media work on the cover of this magazine. Mandell has enjoyed many group and solo shows and will be featured in the book Take Note: A Nimble History of Shorthand, by Andrew Hill of the Financial Times, due out in November. She is ecstatic about being featured in the Boca Raton Charity Register: “It’s what my work is about—giving back. After my husband passed away, we set up a charity at the law school where he taught. Since that time, I’ve set up two more, so we have three scholarships at the law school in Illinois where he was associate dean. So being a part of philanthropy is a huge part of who I am now and what I do.” —John Thomason

New Beginnings

OUR CHARITY REGISTER REACHES NEW HEIGHTS FOR SOUTH COUNTY

MICHAEL CONNOR PHOTOGRAPHY AT BOCA RATON MUSEUM OF ART

F

or the past four years, the Boca Raton Charity Register has been a special section within Boca magazine celebrating the remarkable nonprofit organizations, businesses, and individuals who dedicate themselves to strengthening our community. This year marks an exciting new chapter as the Boca Raton Charity Register becomes a standalone publication, reflecting both its growth and the extraordinary impact of South Palm Beach County’s philanthropic community. Boca Raton is defined not only by its beautiful neighborhoods and thriving businesses, but by the generosity, compassion, and commitment of the people who call it home. Every day, countless organizations and volunteers work tirelessly to improve lives, provide hope, and create opportunities for those in need. The Boca Raton Charity Register has become an invaluable resource for our readers, one that many turn to throughout the year to discover the organizations making a difference in our community and to plan which galas, fundraisers, and charitable events to attend and support. More than just a directory, it serves as a year-round guide that connects our community with the causes, missions, and organizations that inspire generosity and meaningful engagement. This publication was created to celebrate and support the organizations that enrich our community through education, healthcare, the arts, animal welfare, youth services, environmental initiatives, and countless other important causes. Whether you are looking to volunteer, make a charitable contribution, become a sponsor, or attend an upcoming event, we hope this guide serves as your trusted resource throughout the year. As our first standalone Boca Raton Charity Register, it reflects our continued commitment to elevating the visibility of our nonprofit community and its philanthropic leaders. We are also proud to celebrate this exciting milestone with a special launch event, bringing together the organizations, sponsors, and community partners featured throughout these pages. A very special thank you goes to the Boca Raton Museum of Art, whose generous partnership and sponsorship of this inaugural standalone edition helped make this publication possible. The museum has long been a cornerstone of our cultural community, and we are honored to have its support. On behalf of everyone at Boca magazine and Palm Beach Media Group, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to every nonprofit organization, advertiser, sponsor, volunteer, donor, and community leader who contributed to this publication. Your passion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to serving others continue to shape the future of our community and inspire us all. Thank you for helping make Boca Raton a community where philanthropy thrives. We hope this Boca Raton Charity Register becomes a trusted companion throughout the year as you discover new organizations, support meaningful causes, and attend the events that make such a lasting impact on our community. Warmest regards,

s I’m writing this, an email has come through my inbox announcing a brand-new nonprofit launching right here in Boca Raton. They’ll join the legions of grassroots organizations who got their start here, nonprofits targeting food insecurity, environmental conservation, healthcare challenges, education shortages, human trafficking and abuse, and more, born in our backyard. There’s no question that Boca Raton, and Palm Beach County in general, is one of the most generous places around. There’s a reason that we need a Boca Raton Charity Register in the first place; there’s simply so many galas, luncheons, and golf tournaments to keep track of over the next few months and into the New Year. This heritage of giving—and taking a stand to solve a problem that needs fixing—goes back decades. After a tragedy rocked Boca Raton in the 1960s—the death of two children from arsenic poisoning— their mother, Gloria Drummond, rose above her grief to immediately start fundraising to open a community hospital. She said she didn’t know for sure that a closer hospital would have saved her children, but she knew that for others, it absolutely could. Today, we know this place as Boca Raton Regional Hospital, and among its many technological advances and expansions, this year it is celebrating a new structure—the aptly named Gloria Drummond Patient Tower. You can read more about that tale of resilience in our feature on page 24, as well as the stories of two other Boca Raton nonprofits celebrating milestone birthdays. Of course, this isn’t our first Boca Raton Charity Register, but it’s our first standalone publication. We’ve been able to expand this book with not only the must-attend events of the season for nonprofits ranging across a scope of causes, but also your chance to hear from community members who know a thing or two about fundraising. Carrie Rubin shares her tips on leading the charge as an event chairwoman, Zoe Lanham gives us the scoop on kick-off parties, and nonprofits like the George Snow Scholarship Fund give us a glimpse into how they broke the mold of your typical fundraiser with out-of-the-box events. Keep the Boca Raton Charity Register on your coffee table, flip through it incessantly this social season, and circle the events you need to make sure to buy tickets to or the organizations that inspire you to make a donation. You may even find that you have time to volunteer, or that your skill set can assist a nonprofit whose mission calls to you. We all have something to give to keep our community moving forward—and making sure nobody gets left behind.

Charity Chatter THE PARTY SEASON FROM START TO FINISH

AFTER PARTY

Before the main event is the kick-off party, raising excitement and passion for the cause. Zoe Lanham knows a thing or two about philanthropy, having supported Boca Helping Hands, the Boca Raton Historical Society, the George Snow Scholarship Fund, and the Baptist Health Foundation (just to name a few). As vice president of The Addison and an expert event host, she shares kick-off party dos and don’ts. “Since donors go away for the summer, it’s our welcome back to thank them, and it’s a moment to reengage them [and] reaffirm how much they’re appreciated,” she says.

Make time in your full schedule for a chance to take care of you.

GUEST LIST: You should be inviting your recurring big donors in the community. [Think about also] bringing in younger, fresher faces that haven’t been introduced to your organization, having initiatives to get to those younger people.

SET THE STAGE

PARTY TRENDS: I do think that 2026, 2027 is going to be more about having events being a little smaller, a little bit more intimate. ... I’ve certainly been trying to convince organizations they don’t have to have 500 people in the room to raise $500,000. What you need is an event with a curated list of people that support the mission, and you can still raise the same amount of money. USING TECH: I think the storytelling, the organization’s story, and how it’s impacting people is critically important, so you could have ... perhaps an AI booth where you walk in and you’re interacting with people who have been impacted by the organization. Donors want to see what impact they’re making; that’s going to be really big for organizations if they can do that. THE END GOAL: Firstly it’s got to be about the mission; they’ve got to be excited about it. You need to have very impact-focused storytelling. ... What are we doing? How are we impacting your community and the people that live in it? They have to leave with a thorough knowledge and an emotional connection to the mission of the organization.

Giving out college scholarships is one thing; accompanying the recipients beyond such funding is another. The George Snow Scholarship Fund does precisely that, offering support for hundreds of young scholars who will begin and end their studies with the foundation. In 2025 alone, the Scholarship Fund awarded $5,544,367 in scholarships and provided scholar support services to 374 Snow Scholars. Another serious endeavor for the fund: crafting original fundraising events. Each spring, the community puts on their Stetsons for the annual Cowboy Ball, where attendees are transported to a night of ranch-style fun. An open bar, casino games, line dancing, and mechanical alligator riding are just some of the activities featured during this one-of-a-kind night, with all proceeds going for a good cause. The Cowboy Ball returns March 13. “Everybody is literally wearing their boots and their cowboy hats, and it’s not as stuffy as some of the formal events, so it just gives people a chance to have fun,” says Amy Greene, vice president of special events for George Snow. The fund’s second event also involves music and dancing, although in a very different way. Akin to the popular show Dancing with the Stars, Boca’s Ballroom Battle pairs community leaders with professional dancers from Fred Astaire Dance Studios, challenging them to master dance routines over five months. “Most people are coming into [Ballroom Battle] with zero experience,” says Jay Brandt, vice president of development for George Snow and a Ballroom Battle alum. “They can have two left feet—it doesn’t matter—just a willingness to have fun and learn.” Each competitor embarks on a fundraising campaign for George Snow’s scholar support services, and at the end of the night, the top male and female dancers who raise the most funds take home the Mirror Ball Trophy. Ballroom Battle returns for its 19th edition on Nov. 7. (scholarship.org) 16

Members of Men Giving Back play air hockey at the Backyard Battle

☑ Battle of the Bros Men Giving back gets right to the point: It’s a “bunch of guys” donating to the Palm Beach County community that they love. To date, they have raised more than $3 million to distribute to local charities focused on education, food instability, mental health services, and children. “The way Men Giving Back works is that it’s an annual membership, and your fee goes towards our charitable contributions at the end of the year,” explains William Marino, co-founder of Men Giving Back. “When our members are at events, there’s no additional ask; they can just connect with their friends, network, and enjoy the night.” What encapsulates the nonprofit’s

core mission of fun, philanthropy, and fellowship is its Backyard Battle. The annual event, hosted at Boca West Country Club, has members compete amongst themselves in friendly games of golf, axe throwing, cornhole, air hockey, and more. “Boys will be boys; they love competition,” Marino jokes. Men Giving Back hosted its sixth edition of the Backyard Battle in February of this year, bringing together more than 120 members. All proceeds from the annual dues will be sorted out at their annual gala taking place on Nov. 4. Their largest recipients last year were Feeding Palm Beach County, Kindness Matters, Palm Beach County Food Bank, and Speak Up for Kids. (mengivingback.org)

☑ Community Chest

Serving Palm Beach County for nearly 30 years with hot meals and educational opportunities, Boca Helping Hands is one of the biggest nonprofits in South Florida. In 2025, it distributed more than 3.5 million meals through pantry bags and hot meal services across five distribution sites throughout the county. But maintaining that good work requires a lot of donations, and Boca Helping Hands has a fundraising event unlike any other. Its yearly tradition, the Monopoly and Casino Night Gala, was conceived by Gary Peters, former board president of Boca Helping Hands as well as a former Monopoly national champion. “What makes any fundraising event are the first three letters: FUN,” explains Andrew Hagen, CEO of Boca Helping Hands. “Our events are typically oriented to make sure people have a good time socializing and playing.” The unusual event has grown over the years. What was only one night of Monopoly gaming became a two-night tournament, which was held this year in April at the Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club; the next one is scheduled for April 24. Hagen attributes the success of the event to the longstanding relationship Boca Helping Hands has with the local community. “Most of the people that come to our events ... is because of [their support of] Boca Helping Hands,” he says. “We could probably do a Candyland or an UNO tournament if we felt like it.” (bocahelpinghands.org) Guests play Monopoly at Boca Helping Hands’ signature event

MEET THREE BOCA RATON NONPROFITS SERVING DIFFERENT CAUSES

Written by Guilherme De Domenico BEACH CLEAN-UP Boca Save Our Beaches is dedicated to protecting our local marine environment, and they believe the next generation will be the driving force for it. The educational workbook Seymour’s First Journey into the Sea of Debris has been its primary tool to achieve that goal. During weekly one-hour sessions across Palm Beach County elementary schools, the titular Seymour, a sea horse, takes kids on an adventure to clean the ocean he lives in. “The goal is to engage students,” says Jessica Gray, founder of Boca Save Our Beaches. “We make it fun and educational as well, but it’s not your traditional ‘sit in your seat and let me read this book to you.’” Their footprint is vast in the Boca area. Since its inception in 2015, the group has engaged 2,613 volunteers and removed more than 100,000 items, such as plastic bags and bottle caps, in beach cleanups. “What I have noticed since I have been doing this for 10 years is that people want to help; they just don’t know how,” says Gray. “If you provide them tools to make better

decisions, they’ll make those decisions and share that information with others.” (bocasob.com) SUPPORT FOR SUCCESS A path to a good future often starts in one’s childhood. That is the basis for Best Foot Forward, which dedicates its time giving foster care and at-risk youth the same educational opportunities their peers have. Serving more than 1,000 students in its 16-year history, they’ve recently expanded their mission to provide “wrap-around” student support services. “We realized that it’s more about maintaining a consistent relationship with students,” says Donna Biase, co-founder and CEO of Best Foot Forward. “It’s [giving] essential academic support and guidance while providing them with all the necessary support and items they need to be successful.” With a presence in more than 50 schools in the Palm Beach County area, the organization implements one-on-one learning with students who are most vulnerable. Their coaches not only provide educational assistance through tutoring,

but also emotional support for their students, such as birthday parties and holiday festivities. In 2026, for the second time, Best Foot Forward was awarded a $100,000 grant from Impact 100 Palm Beach County. The funds will support its Foundations Spark Lab program, focusing on literacy skills for children in the third grade, a fundamental time for a child’s development. “Before third grade, they are learning how to read, and after, they are reading to learn,” says Biase. “There have been significant studies showing that if a person is not on a third grade reading level, that it’s very hard not only to get

ahead in school, but in life.” (bestfoot.org) ART ESCAPE The main idea behind Find Your Voice surged from a simple question: “Where do theater kids go for fun and community?” As a growing voice in Boca Raton, this foundation prides itself as a safe and creative space for the performing arts, fine arts, and healing arts. Although children are its main demographic, Find Your Voice was created so that any artist could walk through its doors and feel welcome. “This organization not only helps to enhance professional

training in the arts but also provides a space in the community where children and their families know they have a second home,” says Christine Barclay, president of Find Your Voice. From its headquarters in Boca Raton for the past two years, Find Your Voice has employed more than 30 artists to help with its mission. They includes actors, painters, and mental health practitioners such as yoga instructors. “Being an actor, dancer, or musician are all forms of therapy,” says Barclay. “These are ways for people of all ages to step into someone else’s shoes for a minute and create a great sense of empathy.” Find Your Voice hosted its fourth-annual gala in April and achieved its goal of raising $27,000 in donations. All the proceeds go to a scholarship program offered to kids throughout South Florida, to which they have already contributed more than $10,000. Tips from A Pro Chairwoman CARRIE RUBIN SHARES HER EXPERTISE FROM MORE THAN A DECADE OF CHAIRING LOCAL EVENTS

Written by Tyler Childress If Carrie Rubin’s name sounds familiar, it’s because it’s been on the programs of some of the city’s biggest nonprofit events. From auctions and awards ceremonies to galas and luncheons, Rubin has had a hand in the organization of soirées benefiting the Junior League of Boca Raton, Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation, Impact 100 Palm Beach County, and many more. As a longtime nonprofit supporter and recurring event chair, Rubin has picked up quite a bit of wisdom for throwing memorable bashes. She shares her insights with the Boca Raton Charity Register. A GOOD EVENT CHAIR: You have to have vision and organization. You have to have grace under pressure and the ability to bring people together. You have to make sure that every guest, volunteer, and supporter feels valued at the event, whether it’s a luncheon or a gala…You have to be very organized, because a charity event takes a lot of planning and logistics. You have to define the mission and what story you are trying to tell, what the event is about, and what you are trying to accomplish. THE DON’T’S OF EVENT CHAIRING: People don’t want to come to an event to be lectured all night; they don’t want to listen to speeches all night. I can’t stand going to an event [where] the whole night is listening to people up onstage. People know why they’re going to a charity event, so you really have to be short and concise with your speeches. Get your business done in a quick, concise [manner], and then let people enjoy the evening.

ON TRUSTING YOUR TEAM: You have to stay calm, and I think you have to surround yourself with professionals that know what they’re doing and are always prepared for anything that goes wrong. Whether it’s the hotel or the florist or your A/V people, they have to be respected companies and leaders in their own right. ON LEADERSHIP: You have to be a good and respected leader to run a committee and inspire [its members.] … You have to listen to them. You have to have a clear vision for the event and communicate with them. You have to delegate certain duties to them so that they feel like they’re part of something meaningful, and that they are making a difference. OVERCOMING A FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING: I was honorary chair of the Fuller Center’s Wee Dream [Ball] … They asked me to memorize my speech, and when I had to get up there with no notes, it just gave me a different type of confidence. I’m not saying I don’t get nervous still, but not like I used to, especially after chairing Go Pink [Luncheon] and having to get up on a round stage and speak in front of an audience of 1,200 people. LITTLE TOUCHES: Follow up with a sincere thank-you [to donors] within 24 hours. Handwritten notes are even better, and that creates long-term donor relationships. People always remember those thank-yous.

THE PLANNING: Usually planning starts about six months prior to the event.

Carrie Rubin

“When you chair an event, you have to have vision, organization, grace under pressure, and the ability to bring people together, and you have to make sure that every guest, volunteer, and supporter feels valued.”

EVENT CHAIR GOALS: I try to be very creative and make every event different and beautiful. … You want people to go home saying, “Wow, that was a great event.” You want people walking into your ballroom and saying, “Wow, this is beautiful.” 20

BOCA

THREE ORGANIZATIONS CELEBRATE MILESTONE ANNIVERSARIES IN THE 2026-2027 SOCIAL SEASON Written by Marie Speed

Boca Raton is young by national standards, so when a Boca business or organization passes the 50-year mark, it’s big news here. And we have a few nonprofits this year that are celebrating birthdays hovering at the half-century milestone.

BOCA RATON REGIONAL HOSPITAL This season, Boca Raton Regional Hospital is celebrating its 60th anniversary, in 2027. Most people know the hospital’s tragic origin story, one that has become part of the city’s lore. It was back in 1962, on Easter Sunday in Boca Raton, when Debra Ann Drummond, 9, and her brother James Randall Drummond, 3, went to the fridge, where they each drank some milk that had been unknowingly tainted with arsenic by a neighbor’s child. The closest hospital was Bethesda Memorial in Boynton Beach, 15 miles away; the children didn’t make it in time. That horrific incident galvanized the small, close-knit Boca Raton community to build its own hospital—which ultimately became the “Miracle on Meadows Road.” The same year the children died, the Debbie-Rand Foundation and Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League formed, dedicated to fundraising for a future hospital. The effort to raise money became a community-wide rallying point for the roughly 10,000 people in Boca. In fact, it may have marked the first spark of charitable giving that would come to define Boca Raton. The ground-breaking for the hospital on

Meadows Road was achieved in 1965; Boca Raton Community Hospital opened two years later with 104 beds. That small community hospital has grown exponentially; by 1982, it had 400 beds. In 2010, it was renamed Boca Raton Regional Hospital, and a $10 million donation was made to secure its future, one of many that would follow as the hospital became a pivotal institution in the community. It joined Baptist Health South Florida in 2019 and has spawned notable centers for advanced care, including the Marcus Neuroscience Institute, the Lynn Cancer Institute, the Lynn Women’s Health and Wellness Institute, the Wold Center for Emergency Medicine, and more. The hospital has been engaged in a donorfunded $270 million expansion encompassing nine floors in a new tower featuring all-private patient rooms. There will be 20 new operating rooms, two hybrid operating rooms, a hybrid PET/MRI, a radiology suite, an intensive care unit, and more. North Region Executive and CEO of Boca Raton Regional Hospital Lincoln Mendez notes the durable bond over the years between the hospital and its founding community.

“Boca Raton Regional Hospital has always had a strong connection to the Boca Raton community, because it was created in response to a community need,” he says. “Gloria Drummond helped lead the effort to build the hospital after the tragic loss of her two children, and that history still shapes how residents view the hospital today—not just as a place for care, but as something the community helped create and continues to support.” The small hospital on Meadows Road once founded by a grieving community has morphed into a sprawling medical campus in the city, and is regarded today as one of the top healthcare providers in the region. Its birthday this season is living proof of what one community can do through collaboration and vision. “For Boca Raton Regional Hospital, the new tower strengthens its ability to continue to enhance patient care by expanding high-acuity services, surgical capacity, critical care, and private-room availability,” Mendez says. “The hospital is no longer just growing to meet local demand—it is building the infrastructure expected of a premier regional medical center.” BOCA RATON CHARITY REGISTER 2026-2027

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF BOCA RATON The Junior League of Boca Raton was an outgrowth of the Junior Service League, organized by 27 women in 1971. Back then, Boca was on the cusp of its decades-long growth surge; IBM had arrived a few years earlier, the “pink tower” at the Boca Resort was still new, and Marymount College had just become the College of Boca Raton (now Lynn University). The three original founders were Jeanne Bauer, Joan Moseley, and LeeAnn Burns. The Junior Service League became an official Junior League in 1984. In an interview with Boca magazine, Bauer recalled the early days of the League, when most of the women were housewives and membership was by invitation only. “It was so different then,” she says. “You had to be ‘known’ by so many people [before you were accepted into membership], and it was all the white-glove and reception-line thing.” Those days are long gone now, according to the League’s outgoing 2025-2026 president, Victoria Matthews.

“We’re all about developing the potential of our women, getting them trained to be volunteers in our community, and, of course, giving back.” —Victoria Matthews “We’re definitely not that same League anymore,” she says. “Ninety-eight percent of our members all work full-time. They come to volunteer as needed for as much time as they can commit. … And you don’t need to get sponsored anymore. We look for women who want to be part of our organization and who believe in our mission. We’re all about developing the potential of our women, getting them trained to be volunteers in our community and, of course, giving back.” That volunteer force has grown from 27 at its inception to 643 in 2026, and its major areas of concentration have been child welfare and nonprofit support. Major milestones include starting the Boca Raton Historical Society, establishing the Singing Pines Children’s Museum, and building the Vegso Community Resource Center, its current home and a hub for other nonprofits. The League has also heavily supported In the Pines’ affordable workforce housing, launched the Woman Volunteer of the Year luncheon, and established the Diaper

26

Bank, now its own nonprofit. Improving literacy is one of the League’s leading initiatives this year. “We have a Raising Readers program, where we provide books to Title I schoolteachers; this year, we awarded 100 books to 30 Title I teachers,” Matthews says. “We also have a Period Poverty Committee, where we help high school students with hygiene products. We do period supply drives and distribution through the Diaper Bank.” These and the other programs the League spearheads only underscore its impact across all sectors of need—and the momentum is only growing. Matthews says, “My whole focus has been making sure that our League continues to thrive—giving members a sense of community and allowing them to give back.”

THE FULLER CENTER Even 55 years ago, there were people in Boca Raton who realized everything here wasn’t second retirement homes and Sundays at the club. There were also residents whose kids needed help, and that realization became the genesis for what is now the Fuller Center, launched by Dorothy Fleegler and Frances Cohen, with help from Delray’s legendary detective/reporter Virginia Snyder and philanthropists James and Florence Fuller. In 1969, the first-ever contract for federally subsidized childcare in Florida was signed in the Fleegler home, and in 1970, construction started on the new center on ground leased from the city at $1 per year for 50 years. The center has grown steadily, adding an infant nursery and a latchkey program for children (1974), a preschool building (1982), a west campus (1989), and a health clinic (2004), among many of its milestones. In 2018, the Perper Learning Center opened, and a Teen Leadership program was launched, and in 2021, the Fuller Academy, its private choice elementary school, was established. Today, Fuller Center CEO Eric Roby says the organization numbers 150 employees, covers two campuses, and includes an infant program, an early education program, the Fuller Academy, an out-of-school-time program (after-school and summer camp), and the teen leadership program. The center has grown from one classroom with 22 kids to serving more than 1,000 children and 700 families a year. “All that is wrapped around our family empowerment

“Our case workers work on small problems before they become large problems.” — Eric Roby

Children at the Fuller Center benefit from early education and literacy programs.

programs, which provide assistance for our parents,” he says. “Our mission is to ensure that all children reach their full potential, and we believe that if we can make the family foundation as strong as possible, we will have an easier job of completing our mission.” Roby says the Fuller Center’s holistic approach to the family is integral to its success. “Our case workers work on small problems before they can become large problems for families,” he says. “Maybe we can help with smaller issues such as prepping for a job interview or making sure there’s enough food in the household for the weekends. Maybe there are some [larger] substance abuse issues in the home or some spousal abuse problems. In addition to that, we have a health and wellness program. We’re providing two-thirds, if not 100 percent, of the nutritional needs of every child. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and three snacks daily—we serve 433,000 meals a year.” Fuller Center families are the “frontline workers” that drive the economy of Boca Raton, Roby says, coming from 40 ZIP codes from Northern Palm Beach County to North Miami to drop their kids off so they can work in Boca Raton. “I believe that our mission is more relevant today than it was 55 years ago, because we have seen that astronomical increase in the cost of living,” Roby says. “It is very difficult to find reliable, affordable, high-quality programs that provide care for children.” BOCA RATON CHARITY REGISTER 2026-2027

Since 1958, The Arc of Palm Beach County has envisioned a community where every person feels welcome, connected, and accepted. The Arc is a nonprofit organization serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, delivering services directly to individuals from infancy through adulthood, as well as to families in need of support.

Ballet Palm Beach is the professional ballet company of Palm Beach County. We create and present unique and meaningful performances, outreach programs, and training experiences. These artistic activities add to the cultural richness of our community.

Bella’s Angels provides critical financial and emotional support to families of children with lifelong physical disabilities. They serve families who often fall through the cracks, those who earn too much to qualify for government assistance but still struggle to meet the overwhelming costs of their child’s medical care. They ease this burden by covering therapy sessions, medical travel, specialized equipment, and other essential needs not fully covered by insurance.

Without a foundation in literacy, children struggle in school. As youths, they are more likely to drop out without a high school diploma and lack the job readiness skills needed to obtain meaningful employment. As adults, they struggle to find jobs that pay a livable wage. To address this, the Literacy Coalition provides programs that help 64,464 adults and children each year. Volunteers are needed.

The mission of our all-volunteer board, comprised of community leaders, professionals, philanthropists and retired high-ranking military officers, is to raise the funds necessary to fully fund the acquisition and training of specialty-trained, accredited guide dogs for blind veterans and specialtytrained service dogs for disabled veterans who suffer from loss of limbs, loss of hearing, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at no cost to the disabled veteran. We also raise the funds necessary to provide the training of veteran-owned dogs to be service dogs and first responder-owned dogs to be crisis care therapy dogs at EMS and police stations (the dogs must pass the necessary temperament and behavioral testing); we do this at no cost to the veteran or the first responder. We provide the “Gift of Life, for Life.” After approximately eight years, the dogs retire from working and then remain a member of the family, however, if the veteran or first responder requires a replacement guide dog, service dog, or crisis care therapy dog, we replace the dog at no cost to the disabled veteran or the first responder.

Yellow Ribbon Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting post-9/11 wounded, ill, and injured service members, caregivers, and families through housing, transportation, caregiver support, and essential services. For 22 years, YRF has walked alongside military families throughout the lifelong journey of recovery. The Annual Gala has raised over $5 million to support these life-changing programs and remains a tribute to resilience.

The YMCA of South Palm Beach County has branch locations in Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, and our mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. For more than 50 years, our Y has served as a leader in our community, providing muchneeded programs and services to children, families, and older adults, regardless of age, income, or background.

THE LAST WORD

Ward Kellogg

A BANK EXECUTIVE CONTINUES HIS 20-YEAR COMMITMENT TO SERVING PALM BEACH COUNTY’S NEGLECTED AND ABUSED CHILDREN

ne’s charitable destiny can be discovered when they least expect it. Ward Kellogg found his while wearing roller skates. “I was living in Boca, and my neighbor, Gloria Pierson, was president of HomeSafe at the time,” Kellogg recalls. “And she saw me each evening out in the cul-de-sac playing roller hockey with all the neighborhood boys, and she knew that I really enjoyed spending time with kids, and she thought it would be a good idea to get me involved with HomeSafe, so she brought me in. It hit me immediately what they do there.” Founded in 1979, the Lake Worth Beach-based nonprofit works to protect victims of child abuse and neglect through prevention, detection, and treatment, which often involves rehoming children in its four residential

Ward Kellogg

“We realized the benefit the kids get from having their own room. ... They almost can’t believe it. For some of them, it’s the first bed they’ve ever had.” —Ward Kellogg campuses. Its services include Healthy Beginnings, an extensive child development program, and SafetyNet, which provides year-round therapeutic and support services. “HomeSafe takes the most difficult cases,” Kellogg says. “If [the children] have been taken from their families, they become wards of the state. They’re in limbo. They can’t go to foster care yet, because their parental rights are still existing. So they have to go through a court process that takes some time. But in the meantime, they need to be taken care of immediately, and I mean that night, and from then on. “I always wanted to be involved in an orphanage, but they don’t do that in Florida,” he adds. “HomeSafe is the closest thing that Florida has to an orphanage. The kids might stay there for a week, or they might stay there for years.” And if they’ve aged out of the foster system, HomeSafe’s Pond Place, an independent living campus in Palm Springs, can provide them with affordable housing and an allowance if certain requirements are met. HomeSafe estimates it serves more than 14,500 infants, children, young adults, and families each year. Kellogg has played a significant role in its growth, serving on its board of directors from 2000 to 2020, then rejoining its 2025-2026 board. He spearheaded efforts to improve HomeSafe’s facilities, and he was instrumental in the development of its signature fundraiser, the Charity Golf Tournament and Classic Party, which has since split off into two events: The latter gala is now the Classic Rock & Roll Party at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, a concert fundraiser whose previous headliners have included The Monkees’ Davy Jones, The E Street Band’s Clarence Clemons, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band. In his day job, Kellogg is the founding chairman and CEO of Paradise Bank, a Boca Raton-born community bank with additional offices in Delray Beach and Fort Lauderdale. (helphomesafe.org) 80

SIGNS OF PROGRESS: When I first joined [HomeSafe], we had a division called Connor’s Nursery, and that’s where babies with AIDS were taken. And initially, their prognosis was just horrible. We had volunteers in rocking chairs that would hold them and rock them and comfort them. We had a picture wall … of all the babies that had been there and passed away. And one day I was looking at the pictures on the wall, and tears were just streaming out of my eyes. And someone came over and put their arm around me and said, “you don’t need to cry, because they’re not dying anymore.” We had turned the corner with medication and treatment. And the kids started living. It was a miraculous turn of events. So we wound up closing, wonderfully, Connor’s Nursery. KELLOGG’S IMPACT: For 40 years in community banking, we’ve been building lots and lots of projects, so the first thing that struck me was the horrible condition of the facilities that the [children] were in. ... I couldn’t get away from the idea that if they had a nicer place, the level of service would improve. And not only was that accomplished over the years—they have beautiful facilities—but we realized the benefit that the kids get from having their own room. So after two phases of building, we made that our goal: to build facilities where each child has their own bedroom. BOCA PAYING IT FORWARD: Boca has a history of being very philanthropic. Paradise Bank supports dozens of charities. For me, my personal involvement has always been HomeSafe. I was on the board for 20 years, and it progressed, and I felt like it was at a completely different level than when I had joined them, and that maybe they didn’t need me as much. And I spent some time looking for another local charity that really needed help and support to build it up. But my heart’s always been with HomeSafe.
