PROTECTION PENDANT With so-called spooky season upon us, I’m loving this evil eye pendant from Ali Weiss Jewelry. I’ll be wearing it all month to ward off any evil spirits that might cast an omen over October. (Page 32)

As cooler temperatures breeze in to replace Miami’s signature sweltering heat this month, it feels like the right time to leave behind the confines of our air-conditioned refuges and celebrate all things made in Miami-Dade. From the philanthropic prowls of the two-time Stanley Cup–winning Florida Panthers (page 18) to tropical blooms at the world-famous Redland International Orchid Festival (page 19) to notable Miami vintners making moves in the wine world (page 93), we’re bringing you the pulse of everything that makes us proud to call Miami home. Celebrating our love for all things local means highlighting some of our favorite Magic City personalities. Is there anyone more legendary in the 305 than Gloria Estefan? (The answer here is a resounding “No!”) We caught up with the queen of the music scene to discuss her new album and to celebrate her recent milestone of 50 years of making music in the Magic City. Turn to page 50 to read “No Guts, No Gloria,” my Q&A with the city’s favorite songbird. Or meet book battler Hedieh Sepehri, founder of local nonprofit Families Against Banning Books, who’s bringing the fight against censorship to Miami’s libraries (page 22). Finally, get street smart about art with Miami native and Museum of Graffiti co-founder Allison Freidin in our “Last Word” on page 112. This month, we’re also proud to present the winners and finalists in our inaugural photo contest. Turn to page 58 to check out reader-submitted photos that show (from each photographer’s unique point of view) what makes the Magic City truly magical. And if you missed submitting your own photos for consideration, mark your calendars: entries for next year’s competition will open in May 2026. I hope this October issue will leave you feeling hometown proud! Take a moment to follow us on Instagram (@aventuramagazine) and subscribe to our Insider’s Guide e-newsletter at aventuramagazine.com so you can stay up-to-date on the absolute best of everything that Miami-Dade has to offer.

Creepy characters await to send chills up your spine at this year’s House of Horror.

SPOOKY SEASON If your idea of fall fun involves bloodcurdling screams, haunted hayrides, and a food truck hawking corpse-colored cotton candy, welcome to your season. Miami’s haunted house game goes hard—and there’s no better place to start than the House of Horror at Miami International Mall. With a lineup that grows eerier and more elaborate

each year, this sprawling fright fest runs September 25 through November 2 and offers a full-blown carnival of chills. Step inside experiences like Blood Moon Bayou, where you’ll find yourself deep in the Everglades facing the Voodoo Queen and her army of risen dead. Or try out Howie’s 3D Playground, where twisted clowns and neon nightmares come to life. Finally, face your fears inside Base 13: Undead Frontier for a mix of cowboys, cadavers, and a desert plague that’ll have you running for your life. Outside, the horror continues in two sprawling scare zones. Fear in the Dedlands

revives cursed crops and haunted harvests, while Midway Mayhem transforms a carnival into twisted torment. If you’re looking for thrills of a different kind, House of Horror boasts South Florida’s only Scare Coaster and unlimited access to all midway rides with admission. Food vendors will be offering creepy eats you won’t find at any other fair or festival. Throw in themed nights like College Night and Heroes Night and you’ve got a one-stop scream shop with something for everyone. Expert Advice from a Facial Plastic Surgeon O CT O BE R

I SSUE

THINGS YOU MUST KNOW WHEN CONSIDERING A FACELIFT When done properly, a facelift rejuvenates and refreshes, without leaving people looking over-pulled or fake. As someone who performs revisions, Dr. Z has identified some of the top few misconceptions that lead patients down the wrong path, resulting in poor outcomes, deformities, and the need for cor-rective surgery.

1. THE MYTH THAT LESS SURGERY GIVES MORE SUBTLE OR NATURAL RESULTS These “smaller”, “quicker”, “less invasive” surgeries are typically shortcuts. They rely on pulling and stretching the skin, which leads to the typical problems we encounter, and many of the issues that scare patients from having a facelift in the first place.

2. NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT A QUALITY FACELIFT TRULY IS AND DOES A good quality lift focuses on repositioning the facial fat pads of the SMAS layer, and platysma muscle of the neck along the correct vectors, without tension. The full story is outside the scope of this article, but make sure you take the time to learn about this from qualified websites and from high quality surgeons.

3. BEING SOLD INTO A PARTICULAR FACELIFT WITH A FANCY NAME It may seem like there are 100’s of different facelifts, but in reality they boil down to the surgeon doing one of three things, pulling the skin only, pulling the SMAS, or repositioning the SMAS with a deep plane lift. Ask your surgeon which type of lift their facelift falls into. Ask what distinguishes their specific lift and how. You don’t have to be a surgeon to

understand the basics of the technical differences.

4. CHOOSING A SURGEON BASED ON THE WRONG MERITS Keep in mind that not every plastic surgeon is able to perform a quality facelift, especially a deep plane lift. In fact, Dr. Zhuravsky is a faculty member for an international course that teaches other well established surgeons how to perform this optimally. Don’t solely pick a surgeon based on their ability to perform other procedures, their location, marketing, or fame. First learn about the surgery, then talk to your surgeon about it. Find out what they are proposing and evaluate their concern for your best interest.

5. RELYING ON ALTERNATIVE PROCEDURES TO AVOID A LIFT Advances in biology have given us many wonderful treatments to improve age related volume loss and skin changes. These are often beneficial as adjuncts to surgery, however they are not replacements and can lead to problems when used inappropriately. We frequently see patients who have spent years on “alternatives”, without ever reaching a satisfactory result, only to end up having a facelift anyway. Surgery can often be more difficult in these cases with increased scar tissue and altered anatomy. It is important to consult with providers that will offer the proper treatments, not merely the only ones at their disposal.

GIVING BACK

PUCKS FOR A PURPOSE

THREE FLORIDA PANTHERS–LED COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPIES

COURTESY OF THE FLORIDA PANTHERS

The puck’s about to drop on another Florida Panthers season, and this one feels a little different. For starters, the Cats are entering the 2025-26 campaign with a big target on their backs—and back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in their rearview mirror. Sunrise is hockey’s hottest zip code right now, and the energy around the team is as about electric as it gets. But while the Panthers dominate on the ice, they’re also proving themselves to be champions off it, leaving a lasting impact across South Florida with heartfelt, communitydriven philanthropies. Here’s a look at three standout ways the Panthers are giving back this year—all while going for a Stanley Cup three-peat.

X

BY JESSE SCOTT

1

PANTHERS ON THE PROWL

Panthers on the Prowl is the brainchild of general manager Bill Zito and his wife, Julie. Inspired by Chicago’s legendary “Cows on Parade,” this campaign places life-size, artist-designed panther sculptures across South Florida (like this one by Miami-based artist Romero Britto), with each one doubling as a bold symbol of resilience and a nod to the region’s hockey pride. The initiative supports the American Cancer Society and aims to raise at least $1 million to fuel cancer research, patient programs, and services. The best part? You don’t need skates or a stick to be part of the action; just a love for art and a shared desire to help knock out cancer. (cancer.org/panthersontheprowl)

#BARKOVSCORES4JOED

BENNY’S BUDDIES

2

Sam Bennett has become a playoff powerhouse for the Panthers, but he’s also a hero for four-legged fans. The scrappy center launched Benny’s Buddies with the Humane Society of Broward County, covering the adoption fees for a shelter animal each time he scored during the 2024-25 season. It’s a win-win: fans celebrate every Bennett goal and deserving pets find their forever homes. (humanebroward.com/bennys-buddies) 18

3

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov isn’t just racking up points for the scoreboard; he’s tallying them for an even greater cause. Since 2019, the Finnish phenom has partnered with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, donating $1,600 for every goal and $800 per assist throughout the season. With more than $500,000 raised so far, Barkov’s impact has helped fund cuttingedge tech, expand critical patient resources, and support families facing some of life’s hardest battles. On top of that, he donates a luxury suite at Amerant Bank Arena each season to host hospital patients, staff, and families. (jdch.com)

Q&A

IN BLOOM PETAL PERFECTION IS ON DISPLAY AT THE REDLAND INTERNATIONAL ORCHID FESTIVAL BY JESSE SCOTT

PHILIP TALLEYRAND OF PHIL NICE CREATIVE

What sets this year’s festival apart? The festival grows each year. In 2025, we [will] welcome more rare plant vendors and more international growers. We’ve added new food trucks and live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The setting remains the same: Fruit & Spice Park, open-air and family-friendly. [There will be] shade, flowers, music, and good food. Whether you’re hunting for rare orchids or spending a day outside, this year promises more to see, hear, and taste.

X SPECIAL SPECIES As for three of the rarest orchids to spot at this year’s show, Motes says to keep a lookout for these beauties:

Phalaenopsis Bellina

Cattleya Walkeriana Var. Coerulea

«

Aventura: How has the Redland International Orchid Festival grown through the years? Motes: The Redland International Orchid Festival began in 1997 as a new kind of orchid event. Instead of a small show with a few vendors and costly displays, it offered a wide-open marketplace where top international growers could sell their best plants directly to the public. Martin Motes led the effort, joined by Jose Exposito, Robert Randall, Lynn Bretsynder, Ken Cameron, Bill Peters, and Barbara Baldan, working through the Redland Professional Orchid Growers group. Although people now can shop online for plants, they still find the best selection and best deals at Redland. Since then, the festival has grown in size and reputation each year, with more vendors and visitors.

«

Bart Motes

For someone buying their first orchid, what are some pro tips? Start with the right plant for your conditions. Not all orchids are the same. Ask the grower what it needs: light, water, humidity, and temperature. Tell them where you plan to grow it. Many orchids—like phalaenopsis or vanda—are easy with the right care. Most beginners overwater; let orchids dry between waterings. Use a fastdraining mix and pots with holes. Orchids are not throwaway flowers. Treat them right and they bloom for years. Start small with two or three plants. Learn, and then build your collection. Watch the free video from Motes Orchids, “Florida Orchid Growing,” on YouTube. We also have a book by the same name, available in both English and Spanish.

«

The Redland International Orchid Festival returns this month to Fruit & Spice Park in Homestead, and it’s blooming bigger and better than ever. First sprouting in 1997 as a grassroots gathering of elite international orchid growers, the now-renowned festival has blossomed into one of the largest orchid-centric events in the world. Equal parts farmers market, plant fair, and social scene, the festival draws more than 16,000 attendees from all walks of plant-loving life—from serious collectors to curious day-trippers. Attendees peruse vibrant blooms from more than 60 international vendors, with ample shade, live music, and a rainbow of rare flora in every direction. This year’s event, set for October 17-19, promises even more rare plants, a fleet of food trucks, and maximum South Florida vibes. We caught up with the festival’s organizer, Bart Motes, for an inside scoop on what makes the event so special and pro tips on keeping orchids happy and healthy. (redlandorchidfestival.com)

Grammatophyllum Speciosum

“Krull-Smith is famous for their breeding of this fragrant species, known for its bold form and vivid colors.” “This Brazilian native has a rare bluelavender hue and a strong scent. Its color is hard to breed, but Brazilian growers at the festival are masters of this type.” “The largest orchid species in the world, with towering spikes and hundreds of flowers. It’s rare to see full specimens outside major collections, but the festival often has them.”

Founded in 2005, Carolina Kleinman’s namesake brand, Carolina K, is rooted in her family’s textile legacy in Latin America. The brand works directly with artisan cooperatives, and its Miami boutique is filled with items that are thoughtfully chosen, with a focus on sustainable textiles like organic cotton and recycled nylon. Aside from honoring generations of textile workers, the brand minimizes waste and provides employment to female artisans who create clothes, home furnishings, and other pieces for Carolina K’s loyal clientele. As revolution gripped Iran in 1979, the country regressed into something unrecognizable to Hedieh Sepehri’s father. Still, he dedicated himself to secretly nourishing his daughter with forbidden food for the mind and soul: the greats of the Western literary canon. He and his wife—professionals who had known only a modernized life under Iran’s shah—had been shaped by a love of books, and they wanted young Hedieh to share their love of literacy. But under Iran’s new Islamic Republic, such books were now outlawed. Still, they were undeterred. “My father would make them into kiddie versions and tell them as bedtime stories; I eventually read them myself,” says Sepehri. One of her favorite memories is her father’s retelling of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, a cautionary tale of books outlawed and burned. “I grew up on banned books,” she adds. In 1987, Sepehri left Tehran for England, before arriving in the United States in 1991. But censorship knows no borders. In fact, Florida tops the country in the banning of books, with more than 4,500 requests during the 2023-24 school year to remove titles from shelves across the state, according to Pen America, which works to protect free expression. A Miami resident since 2005, Sepehri formed Families Against Banning Books (FABB) in 2022. “I couldn’t fathom that I lived in the United States and books would be banned,” she says. “I thought, ‘Let’s get a group of like-minded friends together to talk about what we can do.’” What began as a small gathering at Books & Books in Coral Gables grew to about 80 active members, many spurred to action when poems by Amanda Gorman—who famously read at President Biden’s inauguration in 2021—were removed from shelves at the Bob Graham Education Center in Miami Lakes after complaints from local parents. “When Amanda Gorman got banned, everyone got activated,” Sepehri says. “Little grassroots groups were sprouting up.” Although Sepehri’s sons are now in college and her professional work as a corporate tax director isn’t affected by issues of freedom of expression, she considers herself the perfect advocate to fight censorship. She says she’s known parents who were afraid to speak out about what they had seen in their children’s schools. “I would hear horror stories. I said, ‘I have no skin in the game; I’ll speak for

you. Tell me a behind-the-scenes story.’ I tried to be the feeder of information.” As Sepehri has seen firsthand from her own upbringing, the education of future generations affects everyone. She feels strongly that access to information should not be the privilege of the fortunate few. “Part of education is expanding your mind and learning things your family doesn’t necessarily agree with,” she says. “The ripple effect [of banning books] will be felt when kids have not been exposed to much.” To fight censorship, FABB connects educators, parents, booksellers, librarians, and other Miamians who are concerned about the issue. They join forces with state and national groups that support intellectual freedoms, sharing information and resources so that efforts are not duplicated and ensuring their points of view are represented at public meetings. “We try to support each other’s causes, and that elevates all our voices,” Sepehri says. HOUSE & HILFIGER FLORIDIANS AND INTERNATIONAL STYLE ICONS TOMMY AND DEE HILFIGER DISH ON HILFIGER HOMES, A NEW BOOK SHOWCASING THEIR DISTINCTIVE RESIDENCES BY KATHERINE LANDE What makes a house a home? Tommy: A house becomes a home when it reflects who you are: your passions, your history, your memories. It’s not just about style—it’s about creating a place where you feel comfortable, inspired, and surrounded by the things and people you love. Dee: For me, it’s in the little touches: the scent when you walk in, the music playing, the way the light fills the room. A home should be welcoming and lived-in, while still feeling thoughtfully designed. How do you approach the design process? Tommy: We start with a clear vision and the mood we want the space to evoke, then blend classic and modern influences, layer textures, and add elements that make it distinctly ours. Dee: From that vision, we build together—drawing inspiration from a

fabric, a color palette, an architectural detail, or a vintage reference—and ensure every choice is intentional and practical for how we live. What are your favorite places to source furniture and decor? Tommy: We love sourcing pieces from all over the world, whether it’s a vintage market in Paris or an antique shop in Palm Beach. Those one-of-akind finds give a space so much personality. Dee: Our travels have led us to incredible finds from local artisans and hidden shops. Each one carries the spirit of its origin and brings character, soul, and cherished memories into our home. OCTOBER 2025

STYLE TRENDING

Walk the Talk HOW TO INCORPORATE THREE POPULAR WALKING STYLES INTO YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE BY LIZA GRANT SMITH

SILENT WALKING

Silent walking heralds the health and wellness benefits that arise from combining the trifecta of nature, exercise, and meditation. With recent studies finding that rates of anxiety and depression have risen dramatically since the pandemic and the fact that our attention spans have withered over the past 20 years, this distraction-free walking style is said to center and calm participants and even lead to creative brainstorming.

X RUCKING A leveled-up approach to walking that entails carrying weight in a backpack, rucking has been shown to improve strength, endurance, and balance. Walking with weight also increases calories burnt since you must move more mass at the same pace. The fact that rucking is a low-intensity, low-cost form of functional fitness makes it appealing to those looking for a break from routine.

RUCKING REQUISITES

Made specifically for rucking and backed by a lifetime guarantee, GoRuck’s Rucker 4.0 backpack ($245) is built to last. Power up the pack with 10-, 20-, or 30-pound ruck plates or sand ruck plates. (goruck.com)

HOW-TO Cater your rucking based on your current fitness level: ∞ Those new to exercising or who haven’t walked much should start with shorter distances and less weight. Try 3 to 5 percent of your bodyweight for either 1 mile or 20 minutes, whichever comes first. ∞ Those who have been walking at least three times a week for 3 to 5 miles can increase their load and decrease their distance. JAPANESE WALKING

THIS INTERVAL APPROACH ALTERNATES BETWEEN SHORT BURSTS OF HIGHER INTENSITY WALKING TO INCREASE BLOOD FLOW AND GET YOUR HEART RATE UP, FOLLOWED BY LOWER INTENSITY WALKING TO ALLOW YOUR HEART RATE TO COME BACK DOWN. IT IS PURPORTED TO LEAD TO INCREASED LEG STRENGTH, DECREASED BLOOD PRESSURE, AND BETTER OVERALL FITNESS LEVELS WHEN COMPARED TO MODERATE OR LOWER INTENSITY CONTINUOUS WALKING.

HOW-TO Embrace the purity of the process by doing the following: ∞ Pick an outdoor space that is relatively quiet and a time of day when there are few others present and minimal activity. ∞ Leave potential distractions (like your phone, spouse, or dog) at home. ∞ Quiet your body by ensuring you aren’t hungry or thirsty. ∞ Focus on your breathing by being mindful of each inhale and exhale. Take notice of your feelings and the beauty that surrounds you.

HOW-TO Structure your Japanese walking session like this: ∞ Three minutes of fast walking at roughly 70 percent your peak aerobic capacity. This should be a somewhat hard level where you are breathing heavily and still able to talk but having a conversation is difficult. Swing your arms to engage more of your body and add power to your steps. ∞ Three minutes of slow walking at about 40 percent your peak aerobic capacity. This should be a light level where talking is comfortable and only a bit more labored than effortless conversation. ∞ Alternate between the two paces for five sets totaling 30 minutes.

SAN YSIDRO RANCH, MONTECITO Nestled into the coastal foothills of Montecito, San Ysidro Ranch is more than a hotel—it’s a legend cast in lavender and stone. Spread across 550 acres of lush hillside gardens and oakshaded pathways, this hideaway has long been the backdrop for love stories both iconic and discreet. John and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned at the ranch in 1953. Winston Churchill found writing refuge here. Today it remains a gold standard in romantic American destinations. The property’s 38 standalone accommodations—most of them vine-draped cottages—are individually decorated with antique furnishings, original art, and handmade four-poster canopy beds. Clad in hand-painted wallpaper, the bathrooms come with radiant-heated floors, freestanding Parisian soaking tubs, and outdoor rain showers. Most cottages also include private patios with

oversize sunken spas and dining areas, many with ocean or mountain views. Each cottage tells its own story. The Kennedy Cottage is a 2,700-square-foot carvedstone sanctuary with a private courtyard and sculptures. The 1,450-square-foot Churchill Cottage brims with heirlooms: a 1900 Western Electric oak wall phone, a framed Life cover of Churchill himself, and a signed guest book page. A restored 1930s Art Deco chandelier and playful British bulldog touches add charm to the history. Others are less about legacy and more about flexing creative muscle in California-meets-European elegance, with names like Lotus, Fig, and Honeysuckle. Arriving guests are greeted by ancient ol40

ive trees and rows of lavender. Meandering paths lead through gardens bursting with fragrant jasmine, magnolia, jacaranda, and roses—all set against Pacific vistas and views of the Channel Islands. The sensory experience continues with on-site activities, from a serene hilltop pool flanked by mountain and ocean scenes to the intimate spa nestled at the base of the property. Dining is a serious affair here. Located in a former nineteenth-century citrus packing house, the Stonehouse restaurant serves multicourse menus packed with hyper-local ingredients—many grown on property or caught just offshore. Think: pan-seared abalone with house-made squid ink capellini or Santa Barbara diver urchin, all savored under a canopy of bougainvillea. Meals are included in the nightly rate, so there’s no excuse to skip a single course. For a truly private experience, request dinner inside the 1825 Old Adobe cottage, with its original stone walls and wood beams intact. Below the restaurant, a hidden labyrinth reveals one of the ranch’s most remarkable assets: a 15,500-bottle wine cellar. Here, among rare vintages and global varietals, guests can reserve the Secret Cellar, an intimate tasting room tucked deep within the collection. Sommeliers lead private flights tailored to your palate, often pairing pours with local cheeses or stories of a vineyard’s provenance. Romantic, rarefied, and steeped in California history, San Ysidro Ranch is the kind of place you don’t just visit—you remember it. (sanysidroranch.com)

FARMHOUSE INN, FORESTVILLE Surrounded by vineyard-lined backroads and towering redwoods, Farmhouse Inn is a 25-room boutique retreat in the heart of Sonoma County. In the blink-and-you-mightmiss-it town of Forestville, this family-run hideaway delivers a food-forward, wine-rich experience rooted in ease and authenticity. Each room and suite strikes a balance between rustic character and elevated comfort; sliding barn doors, crackling fireplaces, private patios, and deep soaking tubs are standard fare in the cottages, barn suites, and farmhouse rooms. Upon check-in, guests are welcomed with hand-cut soaps, artisanal beauty products, and generous pours of local wine. Days unfold at an unhurried pace— lounging poolside under yellow parasols, mingling at the nightly wine hour featuring a rotating lineup of boutique regional producers, and capping off the evening with s’mores around the communal firepit. At the heart of the property is The Restaurant, where husband-and-wife chefs Craig Wilmer and Amanda Hoang celebrate Sonoma’s seasonal bounty inside the property’s original farmhouse. Ingredients are sourced from nearby farms and the inn’s Chalk Hill Culinary Gardens, resulting in a style that feels both vibrant and true to its terroir. A recent tasting included celery root and Dungeness crab with yuzu emulsion and mint, black cod banquette with Chalk Hill sunchokes, and a moon cake with vanilla bean ice cream and burnt cinnamon caramel. For a more casual bite, Farmstand—open for lunch—offers the same farm-to-table ethos with a relaxed touch. The wine experience runs deep here. Coowner Joe Bartolomei, a fifth-generation Russian River Valley farmer, has curated a network

of 25 boutique winery partners that offer guests exclusive tastings and behind-the-scenes access. The concierge team tailors each itinerary to your palate—whether you’re drawn to earthy Pinot Noirs or offbeat skin-contact whites. On my most recent visit, I sipped through the range at Croix Estate and sought out bold, small-lot reds—Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel—at Passalacqua. I opted for just two tastings, but your schedule can be as light or indulgent as you like. All tastings are complimentary as part of your stay at Farmhouse Inn. And while Bartolomei’s taste is impeccable, as my dad always said when visiting wine country, “The best wine is free wine.” (farmhouseinn.com)

ROSEWOOD MIRAMAR BEACH, MONTECITO Situated along one of Southern California’s most exclusive stretches of coastline, Rosewood Miramar Beach channels a rare kind of magic: the atmosphere of a private estate paired with the easygoing luxury of a world-class resort. Spanning 16 acres of sculpted gardens and manicured lawns in Montecito, Rosewood feels less like a hotel and more like an invitation into a parallel world—one where you can wander barefoot between clapboard bungalows, traverse a working train track under the watch of a crossing guard, and arrive at the only true beachfront suites in Santa Barbara County. Accommodations range from polished hotel rooms in the main house to garden bungalows tucked along winding paths and coveted terrace-level suites that open directly onto the sand. Interiors channel West Coast comfort— whitewashed palettes, black-and-white marble bathrooms, and just enough nautical nods to remind you where you are. Outside, everything is immaculate. Whether you’re beachside or poolside, the world gives way to Pacific breezes, the hush of waves, and a laid-back grace that defines the American Riviera. While many guests opt to lounge poolside, the beach here isn’t just for admiring. A beach butler sets up loungers and umbrellas and can

outfit guests with boogie boards and beach games. Elsewhere on property, you’ll find two pools (one adults-only), bocce courts, and a Sense Spa that leans into quiet indulgence. Dining is anything but standard resort fare. At Caruso’s, the signature fine-dining restaurant perched above the waterline, coastal California cuisine gets the Michelin treatment. Expect white-glove service, a jacket-required dress code, and refined dishes like Santa Barbara spiny lobster with saffron zabaglione or local abalone presented with delicate restraint. The ambience—white leather chairs, dark wood, and tuxedoed servers—is unapologetically old-school in all the right ways. For something more relaxed, Ama Sushi delivers an intimate, 10-seat omakase experience focused on sustainable ingredients and precision technique; it’s best enjoyed at the counter, where each course is presented by the chef. Meanwhile, Miramar Beach Bar is your go-to for Champagne at sunset or a casual flatbread under the California sun. Despite its unassuming vibe, Rosewood Miramar Beach is a place that draws attention—the kind that doesn’t need to announce itself. Industry insiders and A-listers come here to go unnoticed. And once you’re here, you’ll understand why: Rosewood Miramar Beach doesn’t try to impress. It simply does. (rosewoodhotels.com) «

Although it got its start in the 1950s as the Phillips 66 fuel dock, Pier 66 became a seaside icon in 1965 when a hotel was added. With its space-age, Googie-style, spire-topped tower, the hotel was the crown jewel of the Fort Lauderdale skyline. And its seventeenth-floor rooftop lounge gave patrons a 360-degree view of the city’s glittering waterways, from ocean to Intracoastal and back again in 66 minutes. But fate intervened in 2017, when extensive water damage from Hurricane Irma nearly erased the landmark. Now, after a breathtaking $1 billion transformation, the beloved former petrol platform and humble hotel have been reborn as a mid-century luxury resort spanning 32 acres. Beyond its 325 plush rooms, 90 private residences, and three dazzling pools, Pier 66’s marina is one of the largest superyacht marinas on the East Coast—featuring 164 slips that can accommodate vessels up to 400 feet long—apropos for a resort located in what’s known as the “Venice of America.” The centerpiece of any stay at Pier 66 is its 13,000-square-foot Zenova Spa & Wellness facility. There’s the usual spa fare, all expertly delivered for a day of pure relaxation. But be sure to get your chill on in the one-of-a-kind Snow Room, a frosty retreat that makes for a calming oasis in a city built on sun and fun.

For a unique hot-cold contrast therapy experience, pair a visit to the Snow Room (which is supercooled to around 14 degrees Fahrenheit) with the Southeast’s first ceremonial Aufguss-inspired sauna, sensory showers, vitality pools, and more. When you’re hungry, Pier 66 teems with culinary adventures. At Calusso, Southern European elegance meets South Florida’s seaside bounty, while Sotogrande channels Mediterranean zest with shareable Spanish plates. For breakfast vibes, Garni serves all-day French-inspired brunch, including Champagne mimosas and caviar crêpes. The Nectar Room is an adults-only spot with panAsian bites and artisanal cocktails. Saltbreeze keeps it casual, offering family-friendly Latin dishes and standout frozen drinks by the pool. And then there’s Pier 66’s pièce de résistance: the restored Pier Top lounge. Grab a table and watch the world go by (literally) while you nosh on bites like caviar cones and

tuna tartare topped with gold flakes. Cocktails include the house favorite 66, a mix of Empress Gin, dry Curaçao, prosecco, lime yuzu soda, lemon, grapefruit, and blood orange. More than just a stay, Pier 66 is a portal to Fort Lauderdale’s golden era. Whether you’re tracing its nostalgic silhouette or partaking in modern indulgences, this reinvented landmark serves—and spins—as the place to be in South Florida. (piersixtysix.com) «

At Paris’ iconic Trocadéro, a teenage girl steps out of a black car, her silver sequined dress catching the midday sun. A photographer captures her walk, paparazzistyle, as she moves toward a staircase. A smile, a stroll, a moment of reflection in front of the Eiffel Tower—all interpreted through his lens, which usually is pointed toward celebrities and runway models. Onlookers turn to watch, likely wondering “Who’s that girl?” What appears to be a shoot of a young starlet actually is the culmination of a carefully orchestrated, highly curated program celebrating the girl’s sixteenth birthday in the French capital. Considering that coming of age is a transformative moment in a child’s life, commemorating the milestone deserves to be magical. That was the thinking behind Le Royal Monceau— Raffles Paris’ new “Paris Sweet 16” program, a

personalized experience to create lifetime memories for the celebrated teen. The Parisian fairy tale begins with a family stay at the luxe Le Royal Monceau, located steps from the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées. The hotel is a dream of its own, with its art-filled spaces, glam suites, and multi-mirrored bathrooms. Sweet amenities and a view of the city set the stage for fun things to come, including spa visits and a master class on the art of the crêpe (or chocolate mousse), led by the hotel’s pastry team. Then, shopping. A stop at Printemps

is always de rigueur in the City of Light, but on this occasion the experience is elevated via a stylist who will curate a chic Parisian wardrobe and beauty must-haves for a girl on the verge of adulthood. No baby tees or sweatpants here! The idea is to train the eye and create a true appreciation of fashion, something that will serve her well into the future. The pièce de résistance, of course, is the photo shoot. On the morning of the shoot day, hair and makeup artists from the legendary Patrick & Marcel salon arrive at the suite to do

their magic. Patrick & Marcel’s artists are the stylists of choice for celebrities during Fashion Week, and it shows in the transformational results. With a glamorous new look, the birthday girl is escorted to iconic Paris locations to sit for an editorial-style shoot with one of the city’s pre-eminent fashion and red-carpet photographers—names like Tiziano and Pierre Perusseau. The dramatic images, both candid and posed, capture youthful beauty and an unforgettable moment in time in the world’s most magical city. (raffles.com/paris) «

Channeling that classic Tom Cruise line from the original Top Gun movie: “I feel the need. The need for speed.” To feel the speed, simply dial up Sport+ drive mode to add a triple shot of espresso to the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Now foot to the floor and brace yourself. It’s not the off-the-line thrust that will release a tsunami of adrenaline and send your pulse into hyperdrive (though zero to 60 in 3.4 seconds isn’t exactly hanging around). No, it’s the ferocity of the mid-range, slingshotout-of-the-on-ramp surge that will clench your jaw, tingle your fingers, and have you uttering expletives like Gordon Ramsay on Kitchen Nightmares. The source of all this mindwarping forward motion is Aston Martin’s new Vantage coupe, which has just had a major makeover to transform it into a true Porsche 911–Ferrari Amalfi– Mercedes-AMG GT combatant. While the bones of the Aston are pretty much unchanged from the 2017 original, continuous evolution has kept it as a major player in the supercar-lite 46

game. But this 2025 version takes the Vantage to a whole new towering level in terms of power, performance, handling, and looks. Take that mighty V8. It’s still essentially the same motor supplied by Mercedes-AMG and used in the AMG GT. But it’s been extensively tweaked by Aston engineers, who endowed it with bigger turbos, modified camshaft profiles, a higher compression ratio, and improved cooling. It now makes an impressive 656 hp at 6,000 rpm—up 128 hp from its predecessor. Max torque? That soars by 85 lb-ft to 590 lb-ft. Peterbilt 18-wheelers have less muscle. The company’s handling wizards also worked their magic to help the Vantage sweep around curves like a Hot Wheels slot car. It gets a new set of Bilstein adaptive dampers similar to those in Aston’s latest DB12 and Vanquish rocket ships, plus even more precise electric steering that wouldn’t seem out of place on Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin F1 racecar. There’s also additional stiffening for the bonded-aluminum monocoque structure, a wider track, weight management that gives a perfect front-rear balance, and super-sticky Michelin Pilot S5 tires developed specially for the new Vantage. Speaking of wide track, take a moment to gaze at the car’s jaw-dropping shape. Yes, it’s evolved from that 2017 model, but it feels totally new. The signature Aston grille is a whopping 40 percent bigger and capable

HINCKLEY’S VERSATILE 41 WEEKENDER COMES WITH OUTBOARD POWER TO DELIVER THRILLING SPEED

COURTESY OF HINCKLEY YACHTS

BY HOWARD WALKER

«

We love Hinckleys. All that salty Maine lobster boat style. All that artisan-crafted, mirror-varnished brightwork. To this day, the sight of a flag-blue-hulled Hinckley Picnic Boat slicing through the chop, Stars and Stripes fluttering off the transom, will make any boat lover’s heart soar. It’s been almost a century since Henry R. Hinckley built his first boat at the Manset Boatyard in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Since then, Hinckley has done a fine job of combining classic design and old-world craftsmanship with some of the newest technical innovations, everything from waterjet propulsion to carbon composite construction and joystick control. In 2017, it was the first builder to experiment with electric power, launching the fully electric, achingly gorgeous, 28-foot Hinckley Dasher. To kick off the new year, Hinckley will splash what just might be its most appealing model to date, one that could well provide the template for the ultimate Florida family cruiser: the Hinckley 41. Developed from the brand-new Hinckley Picnic Boat 39, the 41 trades waterjets for a transom stacked with triple Mercury Verado outboards. Standard power is a trio of 350-hp V10s, delivering a combined 1,050 hp and a top speed of 53 mph. Opt for the Verado 400s and you should see around 60 mph flat out. That’s a big step up from the 41-mph max of the Picnic 39 with jets and twin 480-hp Volvo diesels. 48

But the beauty of outboard power—in addition to ease of maintenance, silent running, and a 2-foot-2-inch draft—is space. Removing two honking diesels leaves a lot of room under the cockpit floor. In this new 41, it means lazarettes on each side that are big enough for a small armada of water toys. What is carried over from the 39 is the terrific forward open seating area. Hinckleys of old always had a raised forward deck to allow for a decent-

What hasn’t changed is the elaborate construction of that smoothriding hull, which is laminated with vacuum-infused epoxy resin and strengthened with carbon fiber and Kevlar. All that varnished wood that rings the cockpit, frames the side decks, and lines the interior of the salon is pure Hinckley. Too daunting a DIY job to revarnish? Miami’s favorite songstress celebrates 50 years of making music with her new album, Raíces, a return to her roots both literally and figuratively. Aventura caught up with Gloria Estefan to talk about releasing her first Spanish language album in 18 years, her love for the Magic City, and the advice she’d give her younger self.

BERNANDO DORAL

NO GUTS, NO GLORIA

BY K R I ST E N D E SMO N D L E F EV R E

Aventura: How did your earliest memories of music in Miami influence your sound? Estefan: My parents brought me here from Cuba when I was a toddler. My musical references then were the records from my mom’s collection from Cuba that her mother would smuggle in boxes of baby food sent via pilots with Cubana de Aviacion. Later, when we could afford to eat at a local diner called The Dog House (near Flagler and 37th), as a young child I would listen to all the selections in the tiny jukeboxes on each table: rock-and-roll hits, Nat King Cole, and all the crooners. These songs made an indelible mark that I would carry with me always. When my father joined the U.S. Army and we were sent to San Antonio, Texas, Elvis was at the top of the charts and I would listen to his records and go see his movies. Then we came back to Miami when I was in the fifth grade. The British Invasion hit me full force as did the songs of Carole King, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder. If there was a music scene [in Miami], I didn’t know about it until I actually became a part of it when I joined the Miami Latin Boys (later known as the Miami Sound Machine) in 1975 at the age of 17. I quickly learned the Latin music the band already played (I had grown up listening to my mom’s recordings of Celia Cruz, Cachao, and Orquesta Aragon), and I then injected my love of Brazilian, pop, and disco music.

sharing a city with so many different cultures, being in beautiful sunshine all year, hearing multiple languages being spoken, and surrounded by a vibrant musical tapestry. All of this has definitely shaped who I am. I doubt my career or the music I have made would be the same had I grown up elsewhere.

BERNANDO DORAL

What inspired you to create Raíces? Now more than ever, I appreciate my roots and the culture that my mother instilled in me and made sure that we kept alive and thriving—and which Emilio and I have also instilled in our children and grandson. Since Cuban rhythms and music were my first influences and was what I sang in the band when I joined in 1975, it feels like I am coming full circle after having been able to explore so many rhythms that are also a part of my musical vocabulary and journey. I also feel it is an important moment to celebrate who we are and express ourselves proudly in our native tongue.

When you joined the Miami Sound Machine, did you imagine Latin music could become commercially popular, especially within the broader American population? I always believed that Latin music had a far reach because I was watching Desi Arnaz sing and speak in Spanish on I Love Lucy, one of the most popular shows on television at that time. I believed that the acceptance of that show was proof positive of listeners’ openness to Latin music. In the ’70s, a Spanish group called Mocedades had a top 10 hit (in Spanish) on the pop music charts with the song “Eres Tu,” and I also saw firsthand the reactions of our Miami Sound Machine audiences and their acceptance of all the rhythms we played. Miami has been at the heart of your life and career. How has the city shaped who you are? Miami is my home! I can’t imagine living anywhere else, and I am of the opinion that we live in paradise. I’ve had the privilege of growing up 52

Raíces means “roots” in Spanish. What does that word mean to you in the context of this album? In Emilio’s and my family, there are different roots or cultural backgrounds. His mother was from Galicia, Spain, and his father from Batroun, Lebanon. My grandfather on my mother’s side was from Asturias, Spain, but they were all raised in Cuba. I believe that every human is a complex amalgamation of cultures from all over the world. Being aware of who we are and where we come from only strengthens our connections as human beings, allowing us to see ourselves reflected in other people, which leads to better understanding. Music, to me, is one of the greatest connectors we have as humans. We don’t need to have a deep knowledge about it to appreciate it and have it bridge the divides that we encounter. On this album, Emilio and I are sharing our own musical and cultural roots, which inform the lyrics and express parts of who we are through music.

How did your approach to making Raíces differ from past projects you’ve been a part of? On previous projects, I spent time writing the songs, producing the tracks, and then recording them in the studio. Because I’ve been focused on writing the songs for a new, original musical called Basura with my daughter, Emily, Emilio asked me if I would trust him with writing this album for me. I gave him a resounding “Yes” and told him I actually loved his idea. I felt it would be a beautiful opportunity for him to create what I now believe to be his musical masterpiece. Rather than creating demos, Emilio produced what would end up being the complete tracks for this album. As he was producing them, he would pass them to on to me, sung by amazing singers in the studio. Because I was able to listen to them for over a year, by the time I went in the studio to record them myself I knew the songs backwards and forwards. The songs were embedded under my skin; I didn’t even have to read the lyrics while singing, which gave me an incredible freedom to have fun, play with the phrasing, and emote to my heart’s content.

I AM ETERNALLY GRATEFUL FOR BEING ABLE TO LIVE A LIFE MAKING MUSIC AND HAVING IT BUILD BRIDGES THROUGHOUT OUR BEAUTIFUL AND VERY COMPLICATED WORLD.” What was the emotional journey like for you singing such personal songs on this album? The lyrical content is very autobiographical. In the case of the only complete song I wrote for the album, “My Beautiful Boy/Mi Ñiño Bello” (a song written for and dedicated to our grandson, Sasha), I got so emotional singing it that I had to stop and come back the next day to complete it. I teared up on a few other songs as well because of their deeply personal nature, like “Cuando El Tiempo Nos Castiga,” which I knew Emilio had written after the passing of his father, and “Como Paso,” a love song that Emilio wrote for me (even though I’m the one singing it to him).

After such a long and influential career, did Raíces offer any new lessons about your own voice or artistry? I felt very joyous and very free during the creation of this album. Perhaps it was due to the 50 years of experience I have under my belt, or maybe it was due to the very personal nature of the lyrics, rhythms, and connections to my personal musical life experience. But, as I say

You’ve been a bridge between Latin music and mainstream pop. Do you see Raíces as a return, a new chapter, or a fullcircle celebration of your role in the music world? Undoubtedly, Raíces has been a return to the charts and radio; we feel blessed and so happy to see the incredibly positive and supportive response it has garnered worldwide. But for me, it is definitely a full-circle celebration of my 50 years in the music world. I am eternally grateful for being able to live a life making music and having it build bridges throughout our beautiful and very complicated world.

This album marks your fiftieth career anniversary. How did working on Raíces help you reconnect with parts of yourself—musically or personally—that you hadn’t explored in a while? For me, this album was a joyful exploration of the rhythms that have brought me so much enjoyment and satisfaction throughout my career and exemplifies the happiness Emilio and I feel in creating new songs that will, hopefully, also become a part of people’s lives. I had felt that connection again when I did “Bemba Colorá” with Sheila E. and Mimi Succar; we were so blessed to have won a Grammy for that performance. When I was going to sing that song in the studio, I prayed to Celia Cruz and asked her to help me do her justice with my performance. That experience reminded me of how much I love singing that genre.

GATO RIVERO

What do you hope listeners take away from Raíces? I hope listeners feel the very honest emotions that run through the music and lyrics. I hope that they are able to make it a part of their own celebrations and significant moments. It is a privilege for us to hear about our music becoming a part of people’s lives. We don’t take that honor lightly. It makes me incredibly happy to see people still dancing to and enjoying our music!

to my children often, every day that we live should teach us something until the day we are no longer here. If this album had one central message to the world, what would it be? The one message that Emilio and I hope resonates with the listener is that love is one of our most important and true connections. Learning to love unconditionally should be our goal in life—love for another human being, love for our country or countries, and for our cultural and musical roots that only enrich us. You’ve broken so many barriers for Latin artists in mainstream American music. How do you reflect on that role today? Emilio and I feel that it’s an incredible honor and privilege to be able to share our thoughts and creative ideas with others through our music. Whenever we’ve been able to offer support to other artists to share their artistic vision we have done so. We are happy if our careers and music have helped nudge open that door a bit more so that other artists can walk through—just like the careers of Desi Arnaz, Carlos Santana, and José Feliciano, among others, did for us. What does success mean to you today, compared to when you were first starting out? To me, success has always meant being able to get up each day excited for what’s ahead and to be able to do what makes us happy. Success is also being able to enjoy beautiful and deep friendships and family relationships and to be able to be of service to others.

GATO RIVERO

If you could give your 20-year-old self a piece of advice, what would it be? I would say, “Please relax and enjoy the ride. Nothing is as earthshaking as you believe it to be. Be in the moment, because that’s the only thing that is a guarantee.” Also, “There’s no such thing as perfection, so trust in what you have to offer and don’t fret so much.”

I HOPE LISTENERS FEEL THE VERY HONEST EMOTIONS THAT RUN THROUGH THE MUSIC AND LYRICS.” 56

Looking back, what do you consider the defining moment of your music career? There have been too many defining moments in different ways to be able to choose only one. But meeting Emilio changed the course of both my musical and personal life, so I think that would qualify as the most defining moment, because meeting him actually made my musical career a possibility. «

COURTESY OF DOUBLE KNOT MIAMI

In Wynwood, chef Michael Schulson’s Double Knot pairs inventive Asian flavors with a space that mirrors the neighborhood’s creative edge.

OPENINGS

SEEING DOUBLE «

When chef Michael Schulson opened Double Knot in Philadelphia in 2016, the city’s dining scene took notice. The modern izakaya earned “Best New Restaurant” honors from Philadelphia Magazine, plus a nod from Zagat as one of the year’s “15 Biggest Restaurant Openings.” Nearly a decade later, Schulson has brought his high-energy, nontraditional sushi concept south, debuting a Miami iteration in Wynwood. Tucked just off Wynwood Walls (as in overlooking them from a hidden indoor perch), Double Knot Miami mirrors the original’s culinary ambition in a setting that feels at home among the neighborhood’s provocative art and

color-drenched streets. Designed by Rohe Creative, the space juxtaposes Wynwood’s industrial edge with Miami’s Deco glamour, anchored by a glowing mosaic-lit vaulted ceiling, oversize brass sconces, bold floral prints, and concrete pillars warmed by sleek metals and rich woods. The menu veers playfully between tradition and reinvention. The Cheesesteak Bao—stuffed with provolone and cherry pepper relish—pays homage to the restaurant’s Philly roots. Crispy Japanese fried chicken, black cod fried rice, and Kobe beef skewers channel Japanese flavors for the American palate. Sushi and sashimi offerings meet the precision expected from one of America’s top sushi masters, with premium

cuts and delicate preparations that elevate every bite. Bluefin tuna loin melts on contact, while bigeye tuna rolls and toro nigiri stand out among the raw selections. The bar program keeps pace with equally thoughtful cocktails. The namesake Double Knot layers bourbon, rye, vermouth, smoked cinnamon, and clove for a complex sipper; the Splice Knot blends shishito vodka, ginger honey, and lime; while the Alpine Knot pairs vodka, yuzu, honey, and shiso for a crisp, aromatic finish. Philly may have birthed Double Knot, but Wynwood is already claiming it as its own. Turns out, Miami swagger suits it perfectly. (doubleknotmiami.com) —Paul Rubio

2. BAYSIDE BEATS Perched in Edgewater on an enviable slice of Biscayne Bay, Amara is equal parts scene and sanctuary. Outside, parasol-topped tables capture the breeze; inside, a square of open food stations is the restaurant’s heartbeat. The crowd? Miami at its most photogenic. Think: designer sunglasses, impeccable resort wear, and plenty of Champagne flutes catching the sunlight. A live DJ spins upbeat tracks that enhance the energy without drowning out conversation, while the bay shimmers in the background like a perfectly staged prop.

SIX REASONS WE’RE HOOKED ON BRUNCH AT AMARA AT PARAISO BY PAUL RUBIO

In a city where brunch is practically a sport, this bayside affair is a championship contender. At Amara at Paraiso, Sunday unfolds as a sensory celebration of South Florida living—marketfresh flavors, an effortlessly stylish crowd, and views that remind you why Miami is best enjoyed from the water’s edge. (amaraatparaiso.com)

1. CHEF MICHAEL SCHWARTZ AT THE HELM James Beard Award winner Michael Schwartz— credited with sparking Miami’s farm-to-table revolution—brings his trademark ingredientfocused philosophy to Sunday brunch. The spread reflects both his Latin influences and his knack for elevating comfort classics, with each station feeling intentional rather than overstuffed. From ceviche kissed with bright citrus to silky truffle rigatoni, Schwartz and his team create a dining rhythm that keeps guests moving from station to station, discovering something new at every turn. It’s Miami culinary artistry in weekend form.

3. OCEAN’S BOUNTY Every great brunch has its benchmarks, and at Amara, the raw bar is an undeniable highlight. Here, ice-laden towers showcase briny oysters, jumbo shrimp, and an array of ceviches—heart of palm (for our plant-based/vegan friends), mussels escabeche, shrimp ceviche, and the signature Amara Ceviche with corvina, leche de tigre, sweet potato, toasted corn, and choclo. On certain Sundays, you might catch tuna tartare or a smoky wahoo fish dip making guest appearances. It’s ocean-to-table excellence without pretense, and the ideal start to any brunch game plan.

«

4. DAZZLING DESSERTS Pastry chef Maite Zarrabeitia delivers a finale worthy of its own spotlight. More than two dozen treats line the display, from pistachio cheesecake and coconut cake to alfajores, passionfruit tarts, and chocolate–caramel–hazelnut bites. Silky flan and jewel-like gelatos compete for attention alongside carrot cake and creme brûlée custard tarts. The spread is so irresistible, no one will bat an eye if you start here—and many regulars do. 88

5. EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN The middle stretch of brunch is a culinary playground. Creamy truffle rigatoni and buttery French toast share space with seven composed salads. Schwartz’s DIY arroz verde station invites guests to layer cilantro rice, black beans, maduros, queso frito, avocado, and salsa criolla to taste. The carving station tempts with whole salt-baked salmon drizzled in orange-dill sauce, coal-roasted rib eye, and Peruvian chicken, plus sides like rosemary potatoes with cipollini onions and grilled vegetables. And the signature yuca cheese puffs that keep us coming back to Amara for dinners on end? They’re not lost on brunch. They arrive at your table hot and airy as soon as you head to the buffet for round one.

6. BOTTOMLESS SIPS Even without alcohol, the beverage lineup is reason enough to linger: banana-berry smoothies, green juices, chicha morada, and fresh-pressed pineapple, orange, and watermelon juices. For those going full brunch mode (and we recommend you do), the Sip package ($35) brings an unlimited pour of Lallier Champagne (which typically goes for $112 per bottle at Amara), mimosas, bellinis, and wine. You can upgrade with the Savor package ($65) to add signature cocktails and house spirits, or go for Miami opulence with the Soirée package ($149) to add pours of Dom Pérignon vintage Champagne and premium labels without limit. Whichever you choose, expect an epic brunch to remember—or forget, depending on how much you drink.

V THE FULL BUFFET AND JUICE BAR IS $89 FOR ADULTS OR $48 FOR KIDS UNDER 12.

BRUNCH RUNS FROM 11 A.M. TO 4 P.M. GUESTS HAVE TWO HOURS TO FULFILL THEIR ALLYOU-CAN-EAT-AND-DRINK IMPERATIVES. RESERVATIONS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

SIP&SAVOR Sangria, the beloved Spanish punch, boasts a rich, centuries-long history on the Iberian Peninsula. Traditionally, red wine was combined with fruits, sweeteners, and spirits to create a refreshing drink. This approach was often used to mask less-thanperfect vintages or make wine more palatable in warmer weather. Sangria’s popularity spread, but its reputation fluctuated. Beyond its ingredients, sangria has long been celebrated as a communal beverage. Served in large pitchers during gatherings, it encourages connection and conviviality. Its approachable, fruity nature invites everyone to partake. Today’s bartenders are reimagining sangria as a complex canvas for creativity, highlighting its playful potential through innovative riffs and twists. By incorporating unique ingredients like artisanal spirits, fresh herbs, and seasonal fruits, they showcase how versatile and adaptable this classic drink can be. One standout twist is an Italian-inspired fall sangria that is ideal for our breezy patio weather. The Sangue Caldo (Italian for “hot blooded”) features Orvino Wines’ Vino dell’Amicizia Pinot Noir, a touch of aperitivo bitterness, a spicy kick of pink peppercorn syrup, and bright fruits— resulting in a lively beverage that celebrates of flavor and togetherness.

HANIA CANAVE BET SI

POUR DECISIONS

BY SARAH PHILLIPS MCCARTAN

COURTESY OF FRITZ & FREDO

It’s hard to think of a city in America that is farther away from a major wine region than Miami. San Francisco, of course, has Napa Valley. New York has the Finger Lakes. Even Houston has Hill County just a few hours away. For Miami wine lovers, however, the closest major cluster of vineyards is in Virginia, home to around 300 wineries. (When I drove there from Miami a few years ago, it took over 16 hours—and more than one stop at a fast food drive-through.) But distance hasn’t deterred several intrepid Miami locals from becoming winemakers or starting exciting wine projects. In 2018, Miami-born Pablo Suarez packed his life into a Honda Civic and set off for California. After what he calls “three-and-a-half grueling months” of undertaking a harvest internship, he was hooked. “Turning grapes into a beautiful work of art was something that really resonated,” he says.

Napa saw a bumper crop that year—meaning that, even as an intern, Suarez was able to purchase grapes and begin making his own wine. Seven years on, he’s producing delicious wines under his Napa-based Identity Wines label. And several of his bottles honor his Miami childhood and Cuban heritage. His sparkling wine, dubbed Pet Nat, features flamingos on the label, a nod to the flock famously imported from Cuba to Hialeah Park in 1934. One of Suarez’s early mentors was Heath Porter, the former owner of Uvaggio Wine Bar in Coral Gables. Porter now produces wines in Oregon and Virginia under the Heathen Wines label. Raised in the South, he was surrounded by barbecue and smoked meats—flavors that inspired his tasty Syrah-Grenache blend from Oregon’s Rocks District. “I wanted something round and juicy and delicious,” he explains. “Something with a little bit of spice and funk to it to enjoy with a barbecue.” Allegra Angelo, sommelier and partner at Vinya, was inspired by the Florida Keys when developing the Fritz & Fredo brand with business partner Sarah Gielchinsky. Their two flavored sparkling wines (think: Prosecco meets Italian peaches and piña colada) are fruity and refreshing, making them ideal for poolside drinking or as the base for a spritz cocktail. “Island life is a huge inspiration,” says Angelo. Fritz & Fredo will officially launch two entries this month, making them the newest Florida-inspired wines to hit the market— and to bridge that large gap between Miami and wine country. (winesbysarah.net)

Clockwise from left: Pablo Suarez reps Hialeah while overseeing wines produced in Napa (above) under his Identity Wines label; a bottle of Heath Porter’s Heathen Wine produced in Oregon and Virginia; Fritz & Fredo’s new offerings are inspired by the Florida Keys.

FROM CIT Y TO SHORE, THE FINE ART OF MIAMI LIVING

Inset: A bold wallcovering sets the tone in the foyer. Below: The dining room design is a medley of sculptural forms.

INTERIORS

«

As a massive renovation for their 1930s-era Miami Beach estate loomed, Loren Ridinger and her now-late husband, JR, purchased an 11,000-square-foot penthouse at One Thousand Museum in Downtown Miami as a transitional residence. When it came time to choose a design team to complete the condo expeditiously, Ridinger hired Morada Interiors, helmed by Fernan Hernandez and Holger Odenstein. “They finished the whole space in 10 days, and it was stunning,” she says. Ridinger envisioned interiors that were edgy, distinctive, and inimitable. “I wanted something special, like a couture dress that’s unique to me,” she says. “And I didn’t want just a modern apartment. I wanted it to feel like a genuine home.” To that end, Hernandez and Odenstein set out to deliver a colorful and sophisticated look attuned to the penthouse’s location on Biscayne Boulevard. They were able to rely on their wellstocked inventory of furniture and accessories

at their showroom, Morada Haute Furniture Boutique, just a few blocks away. The team’s interior design approach is on the display from the outset in the residence’s foyer. “You have only one opportunity to make a first impression, and we certainly did that in the entry,” says Hernandez. “The Moooi by Arte wallcovering—a colorful canvas of plant and animal imagery—imparts a tropical-elegant feeling that definitely makes a statement.” The dining room is all about drama with an impactful portrait of the late Zaha Hadid (One Thousand Museum’s architect) commissioned from Miami artist Hermes Berrío. Intensifying the room’s opulence are two sculptural Henge chandeliers that glimmer above the table. “This condo is the center of my universe,” says Ridinger. “It’s where I made the last memories of my husband before he passed, so I treasure it. It truly feels like home.” (morada-interiors.com) —Christine Davis

EMBRACE DECO DELICIOUSNESS WITH RETRO-MIAMI VIBES BY ALENA CAPRA YL RR DA

Pastels (especially soothing pinks, buttery yellows, and sweet lavenders) are making a splash on fashion runways and in home design showrooms. The Magic City is the perfect place to go bold and breezy with a palette reminiscent of a mashup between the Miami Vice era of the 1980s and South Beach’s Art Deco glam of the 1920s and 1930s. Here are a few ways to channel that quintessentially Miami look (think: seaside textures, pastel pops, palm prints, chic shapes, and pure nostalgia) into any room. (alenacapradesigns.com)

TROPICAL TEXTURES Welcome tropical style into your home by incorporating natural elements like wicker, rattan, or even seashells. From accent tables to mirrors, chairs, and light fixtures, these trending textures never go out of style.

All the World’s a Stage TWO WORLD-CLASS STAGERS SHARE THEIR TIPS AND MAIN TAKEAWAYS BY LIZA GRANT SMITH STAGER: Vesta Home One of the country’s leading luxury home staging firms, Vesta has designers in each of its four core markets (one of which is South Florida) and is known for transforming multimillion-dollar properties to help them sell faster and at a higher price. (vestahome.com)

3. Add layering. No matter what style the home is, it needs a layering effect so you feel a sense of livable luxury. What’s your go-to color palette? I always prefer a neutral palette. To me, it brings a sense of peace. In my experience, people often struggle to picture themselves in a space filled with bold colors. When the space is neutral, they can easily imagine adding their own personality and style through color and decor. That does not exclude all colors; it’s the way you use color. I like to incorporate black, blues, and green. What are some keys to furniture placement? I prefer using fewer larger-scale pieces rather than filling a room with smaller items. It creates a clean, simple, and elegant feel that makes the space look more cohesive and well-balanced. What are the most pivotal rooms in a staged home? The main living space and the primary bedroom. The living area is where people spend most of their time—it needs to feel open, inviting, and functional. The primary bedroom, on the other hand, should feel like a retreat. It’s where you end your day, so it should evoke peace, comfort, and a sense of calm. KEITH LEMELIN

Representative: Linda Kennedy, Florida Creative Director PBI: How do you help people envision that this could be their home? Kennedy: I try to avoid over-personalization. Too many personal touches can make it hard for a buyer to envision themself living in the home. Instead, I focus on adding warmth and comfort— enough to make the space feel inviting but still neutral enough to imagine it as their own. How important is the entryway, and what do you do to maximize that first impression? Very important! An inviting entryway helps establish an emotional connection with the home. It’s also the first and the last impression, so it gets double the attention. With a large mirror, the buyer can literally see themself in the home. What are three strategies for successful staging? 1. Even if the client wants color, I first want to neutralize it as a base. 2. I want to encourage flow, so I strategically use the placement of the furniture to pull the prospective buyers from room to room.

Vesta Home’s Linda Kennedy prefers staging homes in a neutral color palette to allow prospective buyers to better visualize themselves in a space.

Representative: Josef Huainigg, CEO and Founder PBI: How do you help people envision that this could be their home?

Huainigg: We’re not here to fill a space— we’re here to tell its story. Our goal is to make every room feel inevitable, like it was always meant to be that way. We take out anything that feels too personal or distracting: photos, heavy styling, or overly specific decor. Instead, we bring in subtle layers: natural textures, thoughtful objects, soft lighting, and art that feels intentional but not overbearing. It’s about creating atmosphere, not decoration. How important is the entryway, and what

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

098_INSPIREDLIVING_1025.indd 98

do you do to maximize that first impression? The entry sets the tone—it should feel clear, confident, and calm. Whether it’s a grand foyer or a simple hallway, we use proportion, symmetry, and a few strong design choices (like a mirror, bench, or console) to create a moment that invites people in without overwhelming them. What are three strategies for successful staging? 1. Give the eye a place to rest. Visual clutter kills connection. 2. Play with texture and tone. This brings depth, especially in neutral homes. 3. Always guide the view. Position furniture to highlight a window, fireplace, or architectural detail. “Wow” elements, yea or nay? It’s mostly about flow, but I love including one or two unexpected moments. That might be a

sculptural pendant, a strong piece of art, or a beautiful material detail. It should feel memorable but not compete with the architecture or distract from the home itself. What are some keys to furniture placement? Proportion is everything—too small and the space feels lost; too big and it overwhelms. We think in terms of movement and conversation: where do people naturally walk, sit, gather? It should feel intuitive and effortless, even though it’s all very intentional. What are the most pivotal rooms in a staged home? The main living space. It sets the emotional core of the home. If someone can imagine themself there—relaxing, hosting, just being— they’re sold. The kitchen and primary suite come close, but the living room is usually where the connection happens.

Amour Leserene’s Josef Huainigg emphasizes the importance of atmosphere, proportion, and flow when staging a home.

LAST WORD ON THE RECORD WITH...

ALLISON FREIDIN From prosecuting crimes committed on the streets of Miami to celebrating and curating art created on those same streets, Allison Freidin has never been afraid to speak up for what she believes in. In 2019, the Miami native left her job as a prosecutor in the State Attorney’s office and teamed up with graffiti historian Alan Ket to open Wynwood’s Museum of Graffiti. We caught up with Friedin to get her take on shaking things up and celebrating street art in the 305 and beyond. (museumofgraffiti.com) —Kristen Desmond LeFevre

My full name is… Allison Freidin. I live in… Miami. I grew up in… Miami. I started my career as… a lawyer. I became interested in street art when… I was a kid. I loved art in general, but graffiti was so mysterious. I would see the same names over and over from the back seat of my parents’ car, but I couldn’t understand how they got there or why they were doing it. The idea to bring street art to a museum came about when… I started to go to Wynwood for lunch in about 2013 when I was practicing law. At that time, the neighborhood was so cool because world-class art was starting to appear. The problem was that there was nowhere to learn about this type of art. It took at least five years from then until I set out to fix that problem. Celebrating street art is important because… it is highly misunderstood. Many times, guests come in thinking that graffiti or street art is gang behavior. They are more focused on the legalities than on the incredible talent of the artists who are highly sophisticated in the use of spray paint and the ability to execute giant masterpieces in public spaces that make people happy. Art I collect includes… artists who are known for pioneering the graffiti art movement in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s like Lady Pink, Cey Adams, Futura, Seen, Phase 2, Haze, and Crash. I also have a huge collection of works from Miami’s own street art scene from the likes of Gustavo Oviedo, Jel Martinez, Ahol Sniffs Glue, and Rasterms. The art scene in Miami is… thriving! I started my fine art gallery in 2020 (a year after we opened the Museum of Graffiti), and we immediately started shipping art from Miami to the rest of the world. Three Miami-based street artists I’m loving right now are… Johnny Robles, Weerdo, and Reds. A common misconception about my job is… that I only run the Museum of Graffiti. A year after my partner, Alan Ket, and I started the Museum of Graffiti, we opened a fine art gallery that remains unnamed (sometimes it goes by The Private Gallery, other times it’s Wynwood Art Gallery). After the gallery, we opened The Art of Hip-Hop. It started as Museum of Graffiti’s pop-up at SXSW in 2023 and then it traveled internationally before we found it a permanent home in Miami, where it celebrates the visual artists behind hip-hop like logo designers, album cover artists, photographers, and fashion designers. One question I get asked a lot is… “Do you make art yourself?” No! Balancing all these projects and trying to keep everyone happy in the process is my art. On an average 112

MATT EATON

X

day, you’ll find me… at work in Wynwood, lunching with clients at Pastis, and working on Art Basel plans; whether it’s January or October, we’ve always got eyes on making each Art Week the most incredible experience possible. What brings me great joy in my job is… when I pay artists at the end of each month from art sales or other corporate projects. It’s the greatest joy knowing that the artists we work with can count on opportunities via the museum to fully live off their art, which is a very hard thing to do in Miami. My biggest successes have been… being approached by the biggest brands in the world like Modelo, Spotify, Xerox, Google, Sprite, Mattel, etc. to work on strategic partnerships that allows us to bring our culture to the world via their global platforms. A major challenge I have faced is… keeping up with the rising rents in Miami. We want to do more exhibitions [and] create greater immersive installations and huge cultural endeavors, but you can’t pay rent with cultural currency. Whenever someone tells me they want to work in the art industry, I tell them… show up! Make sure the art industry likes you the same way you like the art industry. This is a true community; you get what you give. The more you have to give, the farther you’re going to go. If I were to write a memoir, the title would be… Spray Paint & Power Suits.
