OPEN THE DOOR TO SUMMER

Summer is here and with it comes not just the sun and the beach, but you can also take a class you always wanted, learn Hebrew, attend a concert, or visit a special exhibit at a museum with other PAS congregants. It’s also a great time to be helping others with one of our Tikkun Olam initiatives. We look forward to seeing you.

Adult Engagement Celebrates Rabbi Shmuel Afek!

This past May, some of our adult learners had the chance to honor Rabbi Shmuel Afek, one of our longtime teachers, who is retiring after 15 years as a member of the PAS faculty. On the eve of his final class, a group of current and previous students came together to wish Rabbi Afek well as he embarks on his next journey.

He has taught scores of students over the years, as a teacher of our Melton Core program, as well as for more than 20 other courses with topics including study of Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah, Judaism and Islam, a history of Hasidism, and most recently, an exploration of the thoughts and writing of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks.

Rabbi Afek’s Wednesday night classes have been a staple of our Adult Learning program for more than a decade, and he has a following of devoted students who have learned with him semester after semester. His thoughtful approach to the study of Jewish text and its application to everyday life has impacted many of our learners, and Rabbi Afek’s torah has been a gift to our school.

PAS Teens Gear Up for a Fellowship to Move Tikkun Olam Initiative

SLOANE EASTON

The Tzedek Fellowship is a new hands-on leadership training initiative in the PAS Teen Department. Teens applied to be part of the fellowship with a tikkun olam initiative they were already working on, or with an idea to start one. Teen fellows attend monthly seminars where they learn crucial leadership/management skills to help move their initiatives forward. Each seminar has action items attached to it.

Grade

10,

Riverdale Country School, Teens Combating Parkinsons

ForwardGrowing up with family members who have had Parkinson’s, I was inspired to create a project involving the next generation within the Parkinson’s community. I started Teens Combating Parkinson’s, which the Tzedek Fellowship has helped me grow through different presentations and meetings with my mentor. Hearing from other teens who have been working on projects of all different types has been so inspiring.

Grade 10, Columbia Prep, Athlete Attire for Change

My initiative enables hospitalized children around the city to make a difference by designing clothing whose profits would be put toward disease research and prevention. With the help of my mentor, Rabbi Solmsen, I have gained clarity and am excited about continuing my project in the future. I am grateful for this program for providing me with the opportunity to simultaneously do work that I love and help others.

Grade 11, Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Our Unique Minds

I am working to build a website that celebrates and informs people about our unique minds, from learning differences to mental health struggles. I will display resources for those who are looking to reach out for help, as well as anonymous stories surrounding mental health struggles, framed with hope and encouragement. The Tzedek Fellowship has taught me that through community service and activism, I am capable of supporting others.

Grade 10, Horace Mann School, Calling Generations

My initiative connects PAS teens with older members of the Jewish community, with the hope of establishing meaningful intergenerational relationships. Although my project is still in its early stages, my hope is that by next school year, it will be up and running, and both teens and older adults within the Jewish community will be able to learn from each other and enjoy each other's company.

Grade 9, Horace Mann School, Women Fund Women

Women Fund Women (WFW) is a microfinance initiative that loans small amounts of money to various independent businesswomen in low-income cities in Africa. Over the past few months, I have continued to loan money, and began getting repaid on these loans, allowing me to reinvest in more women’s business endeavors. have a compact mission and vision statement, allowing me to create a clear goal of how hope WFW will continue to develop.
