The Upper Ridge Community Council (URCC) serves a vital function as the primary information and community feedback hub for the communities located on the Upper Paradise Ridge, including Magalia, Stirling City, Nimshew, DeSabla and Lovelock. Their priority areas of focus include: wildfire safety and evacuation; emergency communications systems; building a town center; developing a city park; and access to health care and an emergency room. URCC’s monthly meetings give residents a wealth of information, including updates from Paradise Unified School District, Butte County Fire Safe Council, Paradise Pines Property Owners Association, Magalia Community Park, MedSpire/health care on the Ridge, Supervisor Doug Teeter/Butte County Board of Supervisors and Paradise Recreation and Park District. Special presentations have included: ReCover CA OwnerOccupied Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program, roads and infrastructure work by Butte County Public Works, the Butte County Sheriff Emergency Communications program and information about the Upper Ridge Community Plan. URCC has seen numerous successes in the past two years: • Obtained funding to conduct a series of Community

Listening Sessions and report priority areas of focus in the recovery from the Camp Fire identified by community members in Magalia, Centerville and Concow. • Facilitated the venue to allow the development of the leadership for the new Magalia Community Park/

Community Center and Disc Golf Course on the old Paradise Pines Golf Course. • The emergency radio (AM 1460) is functional for the first time in 5+ years. • Working in partnership with Butte County to develop the Upper Ridge Community Plan as part of the Butte County General Plan. • Awarded a “Ridge Rising Award” by the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce for direct response to needs of the community during the immediate aftermath of the Camp Fire, and efforts to connect community and enhance quality of life on the Upper Ridge. The newly painted Community Center is a gathering place for the community. It affords over 2,000 sq. ft of space accommodating up to 120 persons in an assembly setting. The Center was recently upgraded with new security lighting at night, and two handicap accessible parking stalls.

Linda Horton-Lyons serves on the Board of Directors for Magalia Community Park.

— FACES OF THE RIDGE —

The Goodlins: choosing Paradise to raise their family

Our family of six chose to move to Paradise after the fire. Why? Because it’s a different life here, an amazing place to raise a family. Our children get to watch and be a part of something unique, a town with great bones being rebuilt! A town where our kids have to learn what hard work is, but they get to see life transform around them. A town where people who have lost everything are the most generous. The opportunities are infinite: we have a huge garden, chickens, frogs, lizards—one day goats! The stars are endless, we can play outside all year, and we get to walk across the street to beautiful Bille Park every day. I will never forget my kids’ first comment when pulling into Paradise last year: “mom, it’s so green here!” Their lens sees Paradise in a special and singular way and I’m so glad they get to grow up here. ~ Jenni Goodlin

In June, 2020, I returned to Paradise with my family. Although our temporary residence in North Chico was very pleasant, but our hearts remained in Paradise. It took awhile to have our property cleared and deal with the insurance issues. However, my office remains in Chico, behind Raley’s on Skyway, with my original phone number from the Paradise office (530) 872-3515.

Do you have your Estate Planning documents in Order? Do you have a Will or a Living Trust? Do you have a Power of Attorney for Financial or Health Care? Do you need to discuss these issues with a professional? If so, please call for an appointment. I have been serving our Paradise community since 1992.

I look forward to visiting with you. 2639 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Chico 530-872-3515
