FOUNDED I N 1955 as a local non-profit organization, the Art Directors Club of Denver became a chapter of The ONE Club for Creativity in July 2017. The One Club for Creativity - Denver is honored to be a part of such a prestigious global non-profit organization and would like to celebrate by presenting each fashion grouped in continents and each country that it represents. International Haute Couture Theme: Select ONE country and ONE era. Designers create fashions from paper donated by paper mills and coordinated by Spicers Paper. These fashions are showcased at our grand runway show and voted on by a panel of judges. Category winners will be recognized with individual recognition, followed by trophies also constructed of paper. This all-volunteer organized and run event, helps support not only our mission to elevate Denver art and design to the national level, but also non-profit Downtown Aurora Visual Arts, a local community organization that provides after-school arts programs for at-risk youth. Combining art and technology, DAVA programs emphasize innovation, problem-solving, and connection to community. While arts education can connect to careers in the arts, at DAVA they do much more. Their unique approach results in students not only gaining skills in art, but also valuable education, job, and social skills in preparation for a wide range of life aspirations. From the beginning, The Paper Fashion Show has been a part of DAVA’s curriculum. Students ages 7 to 17 research ideas, learn to draw figures, think about design, colors and patterns to create their fashions. These students learn to problem solve and to work on a team while gaining leadership skills and real world experience by participating in a professional event. At the show, DAVA students work alongside professional designers and creators, see their fashions walk the runway and even participate as judges. Since the Paper Fashion Show’s™ inception The One Club for Creativity - Denver has donated over $58,000 to DAVA.

2 018 J U D G E S OMAR-PIERRE SOUBRA
Omar is a passionated innovator, is the Director of Marketing Communications for Trimble, Inc, in charge of drones and self-driving vehicles. Omar has been with the company for the last 20 years, with different roles and responsibilities, from sales to product development, and marketing & communications, as well as different director level roles. In 2011, he created and developed the first Techno-Marketing group, a new and innovative department combining technologies and customer needs. He also developed several products for the construction, geospatial and architecture industries. He holds 16 international patents, in products combining optics, long range 3d scanning (LIDAR) and video camera solutions. In 2012, he was part of the Merger and Acquisition team which acquired the SketchUp group from Google. Before working at Trimble, he worked for a subsidiary of the French power utility, Electricite de France and for a joint-venture between Daimler and Thales.
MONA LUCERO
Born in San Francisco and growing up in Grand Junction, Colorado, she felt the contrast of the city and the small town. Her first fashion influence came from her grandmother, who stashed her varied handbags in a big steamer trunk. Upon turning 18, she crossed the Eisenhower Tunnel from Grand Junction to Denver to start art school at the University of Colorado. Yes, she was one of those art students who dressed eccentrically, mixing flight suits with fur collars, pink tennis shoes, pearls and colored hair and she avidly read fashion magazines. In her senior year, she realized she had found a new love in fashion design and upon attaining her degree, she moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, learning about the fast moving and intriguing fashion world. Upon her return to the Rocky Mountains, she worked in skiwear and activewear in a variety of fashion industry jobs including assistant patternmaker, screen print artist, technical designer, and designer. High fashion and street wear called, though, and she created her first collection which consisted of hand-dyed and screen printed dresses and separates, eventually selling her bags and clothing in boutiques. In a period of ten years, from 2002 to 2012, she tended to her clientele at her eponymous boutique in Denver’s Lower Highlands neighborhood. Over the years, she has created clothing with many pop culture themes: such as “The Butterfly Collection”; “Beauty & the Beast”; “Fellini-esque”; and “Love, Peace & Truth”.
HELEN YOUNG
Helen’s daily goal is make printed pieces so compelling they’ll not only entice the reader to act but also stay out of the recycling bin as long as possible. “Design must be engaging, clever, beautiful and informative … and include a screen tint of chartreuse.” Born in New Zealand but raised in Illinois, she earned her BFA with high honors in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois, with a one-month study abroad in Warsaw, Poland. She has served as President of the Colorado chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design, and was recently honored with the distinguished AIGA Fellow award for excellence in her profession. Since founding EnZed Design 21 years ago, Helen’s reputation with clients is “a designer who can transform any project into an intriguing communications piece.” Her work has been featured in HOW Magazine, Graphic Design USA, Creativity 32 and Paperspecs.com and has received honors from Art Directors Club of Denver (now The One Club Denver), AIGA Colorado and the Business Marketing Association. Helen has judged the UCDA professional design competition, the ADCD student show, and the AIGA Colorado Robert Taylor Scholarships and Professional Grant. Her obsessions are amazing textured papers, unique color combinations, surface patterns, unusual office supplies, tennis, plants that bloom all summer, small purses, really lovely serif fonts, and tiny cars. Helen has attended the Paper Fashion Show regularly since its inception and designed a dress with art director Tracey Ranta for the 2009 show.

EDWARD POPOVITZ
Edward is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. He completed his BFA in fine arts at Ball State University in 1994 and completed his MFA at the University of Dallas in 1998. He has been a Denver resident ever since. Since moving to Colorado, Edward has worked at RMCAD and The Art Institute of Colorado. He has served on the AIGA Board of Directors on and off since 2009. He has participated in The ADCD/ AIGA Review every year since it’s inception. He was awarded a Robert Taylor Professional Development Grant and Sabbatical in 2015.

Working at the intersection of art, ability and disability Damon McLeese is a speaker, trainer, activist and community artist. Specializing in unlocking the creative power of people regardless of their background, belief or experience in creativity. Whether in a corporate setting or in the classroom, Damon’s collaborative approach bridges the gap between creativity and community. Damon has created projects that force us to look at creativity, ability and disability in very different ways. Damon has developed projects as diverse as a photography project for people who are blind, a street art project for people with Alzheimer’s and has developed a corporate art program made by people with disabilities.
GI NO VELARDI
Gino is recognized as one of Denver’s most prominent fashion designers. His high-energy fashion shows over the past decade created a client base that demands his gorgeous evening gowns, flirty cocktail dresses, and stylish coats for their own fashion collections. Velardi’s love of the female figure shows through his continuous search for designs that complement the woman’s body. Velardi is a self-taught fashion designer that has been refining his craft for over a decade in the Denver market. He works hard to stay in touch with what today’s client is looking for while not straying from his own personality and design esthetic. Velardi’s designs utilize luxurious fabrics to create elegant, high-end designs for the woman that demands to feel beautiful and will not be satisfied until she has achieved her goal!
2018 E M C E E S JASON BELAIRE, BROOKE WAY Jason Belaire, Executive Director of Denver Design Week. Jason works to create a week long festival in Denver that celebrates and brings together all creative and design disciplines. So they can learn from each other and help promote the creative professions. Brooke Way is a multimedia journalist, host and emcee who has experience working in local and national news markets. She currently works as a multimedia journalist for TEGNA’s Daily Blast Live, a national entertainment news show. She produces, shoots, edits and reports on the day’s trending topics for broadcast and digital. Brooke’s passions are news and fashion.
