Dear Readers,

issue no. 39

Welcome to the latest issue of our community magazine where we celebrate the vibrant mosaic of life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. As editor of this publication and a fellow resident of this picturesque paradise, I am thrilled to bring you stories that embody our cherished community’s essence.

This edition pays tribute to a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on our hearts and the waves. Louis Graziadio, a successful businessman, and avid surfer found solace and joy in riding the ocean’s swells. We commemorate his life and the passion he shared with so many through beautiful photos of the paddle out in his honor as well as touching memories from those who knew him best, his family and friends.  I had the honor of seeing the love that shone so brightly that day as family and friends from near and far rode the waves to celebrate his life and love of the ocean.

Amidst the gentle hills and breathtaking vistas, the Palos Verdes Golf Club has been a cherished institution for generations. We extend a warm welcome to the new General Manager David Stocke and his family. Embracing the essence of our community as well as PVGC, the Stocke family shares a profound love for golf, outdoor activities, and family, and we are thrilled to have them join our fold.

Our magazine is dedicated to showcasing the heart and soul of our community; it is the people, places, and things that make the Peninsula unique. As we delve into these stories, we continue to uncover the deep connections that tie us together – a shared love for the ocean, the beautiful landscape, and most importantly, each other.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our readers for being a part of this incredible journey. Your unwavering support allows us to continue sharing stories and events that truly matter – stories that celebrate the beauty of life on the Peninsula.

Thank you for picking up this issue and joining us as we honor Louis Graziadio’s legacy and welcome the Stocke family to our close-knit community.

Let us cherish the moments, embrace the connections, and continue to make the Palos Verdes Peninsula a most cherished place to call home.

With warmest regards,

REMEMBERING A LEGEND

Loving Memories of Louis Graziadio, October 23, 1949 – October 17, 2022

Louis Graziadio was one of a kind, a true original. A loving husband, a doting father, and a dyed-in-thewool Palos Verdes family man. he was a lifelong avid surfer, an extraordinarily successful businessman, a generous philanthropist, an innovator, a world traveler, and a man who was a friend to everyone.

Louis Graziadio, also called Luigi, embodied the Aloha spirit. his friend bobby hill said, “Louis was a living example of Aloha.” That was evidenced at a paddle out recently held in his honor. “When so many from near and far come to celebrate the life of a person for whom they deeply cared, it is extraordinary. I wish this on everyone, live aloha,” hill reminds us.

Louis is survived by his wife beth and children

Gina Graziadio, Carra Graziadio, Gino Graziadio, and

Marianna Graziadio. A remarkable person with a spirit of entrepreneurship that provided incredible success in business and allowed him to make a significant impact in the world of surfing.

he was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Second Southern Corp., the managing partner of Ginarra Partners, LLC, a closely held California company involved in a wide range of investments and business ventures, and a member of the Graziadio board of Directors at Pepperdine university. Equally essential, he was an original founding partner of the Surfing heritage Culture Center (ShACC) located in San Clemente, CA.

In honor of Graziadio, family, and friends share their special memories with the community.

“my dad was always most relaxed when he was on or around the water. He lit up when he told a story about an epic surf session or a great fishing trip. He was most at peace when he could hear the waves crashing. growing up as a daughter of a surfer, i spent most of my childhood on beaches. Whether we were at our home in the Hollister ranch, visiting Hawaii, or at our local rat beach, some of my most cherished memories are packing picnics and heading down to the beach with dad. my older sister gina and i would play, while dad surfed. When he finished, he would take us out and push us into waves.”

“i will always remember louis as a driven, hardworking individual who had an insatiable curiosity about all things and was passionate about life in general. He loved his family and friends more than anything in the world and i will always cherish the amazing journey we shared over the last 30 years.”

The Graziado extended family

“he was honestly, one of a kind. he enjoyed doing things for people and I am very proud to have called him my best friend. I have so many fond memories of our times together – hunting, fishing and just hanging out. I loved him with all my being and think of him every day.”

“louis told me that the only thing he wished he could do is ‘catch one more wave.’ a surfer until the end! For all louis did in his life, to hear him say that, will have a lasting effect on me. i’ll surf to luigi for the rest of my life and can’t wait to get back in the water to do what he asked and ‘keep the aloha spirit of surfing alive.’”

“my little brother was right up there with the sixties! He was always very special to his many friends and even had his marijuana-growing garden under the house. it was very successful, and i think that is what got him into business at a young age. one christmas, he even climbed on the roof and put christmas lights up on a huge peace sign. it was very popular, and living on palos verdes drive, everyone loved it. it was great; we got lots of calls.”

“In his early teens, Louis came up with the idea to build a surf reef at Rat beach. So, we assembled a team of locals, Louis came up with the bags for the sand, my brothers and I brought the shovels, and we started the reef on the day of the lowest tide of the month. bag after bag, trek after trek to waist-deep water, we placed the 80-pound bags carefully in a triangular shape to make a right and left-breaking wave when the tide came up. After about four hours of backbreaking work, we realized the bags we had set in the ocean were sinking into the soft sand –what a total bummer! So, we had to settle for the waves as they were at Rat beach in those days.

“Louis was a lifelong friend, and our friendship was lifetime surfing. he was unique and special in many ways. In the last 25 years, Louis would come over and always bring a photo of us, a special T-shirt, wonderful wine, work gloves for our employees, and even a copy of the Declaration of Independence. he was such a Patriot. Love my broski!”

Meet DaviD Stocke & FaMily

Fore-Family Legacy: New Golf Club GM Brings Passion and Expertise to the Greens

Among breathtaking views, classic courses, and elegant clubhouses, Palos Verdes Golf Club is steeped in history dating back to the 1920s. The traditions and camaraderie surrounding the storied grounds and facilities are not to be taken for granted. The Club celebrates its 100th anniversary on Nov. 15, 2024.

When we heard that the Club had appointed a new General Manager, we eagerly awaited the opportunity to meet this enigmatic figure who was poised to take the reins at one of the most renowned golf courses in the country. Meet the new General Manager, along with his family whose captivating journey promises to bring an unforgettable new chapter to the Palos Verdes Golf Club.

David Stocke, CCM, the new General Manager, understands the nuances of exclusive country clubs, professional golf, and business management, making him the perfect choice to lead the legendary club. David grew up the son of a golf course superintendent, “Fast Eddie,” and went on to play NCAA D-I college golf for the university of Portland before turning pro and becoming a certified club manager (CCM). Although he, his wife holly, daughters Peyton and Parker, and son Dawson have lived here a short while, they are enjoying life on the hill.

In 2001 David and holly married on Catalina Island and bought their first home in Windsor, CA. David owned a residential/commercial painting business and holly was a corporate payroll accountant. An entrepreneurial spirit drove them both. David invented the Painter’s utility belt and was awarded a u.S. utility Patent in 2001. he was busy running a 34-man professional painting & decorating business, while simultaneously trying to get his invention into big box chain stores, including Kelly Moore Paints, and made it to final submissions for the popular TV show, Shark Tank.

Meanwhile, holly was doing software implementation for start-up companies and interior design projects in the East bay. In 2003, David sold his painting business and holly left her corporate job, so they could work together as real estate investors and professional home flippers. David earned his California real estate license in 2009 and began researching upcoming foreclosures to purchase at auction, while holly served as lead designer and project manager. Together with former business partner, Jon Andersen (Pro Strongman, Pro Wrestler, IFbb bodybuilder), they founded AndersenStocke Real Estate Development Company. The new endeavor allowed David to turn pro in golf, while holly fulfilled her passion and talents for interior design with a focus on architecture and perfecting floor plans.

In 2004, they sold everything and moved to Palm Springs so David would have the best opportunity to pursue the PGA Tour. They continued flipping homes and started a family in La quinta, CA. Shortly after, Peyton was born. In 2005, David started working as Membership Sales Manager for The Club at PGA West.

“La quinta was a good place to start our family, but after five years, we were ready for a new adventure,” says holly. “David had an opportunity to be the Director of Membership & Marketing for Arizona Country Club, and we lived in Scottsdale from 2009 until July 2017.”

The family’s next stop and transition was the tranquil beauty of the Edna Valley wine region on the Central Coast of California. San Luis Obispo Country Club was David’s first experience as a General Manager for a private country club. This followed his early years as an entrepreneur and 13 years of serving in club management for two esteemed clubs, PGA WEST Private and Arizona Country Club. David had also been diligently working towards the distinction of becoming a Certified Club Manager (CCM) through the nationally acclaimed Club Management Association of America, a distinction only earned by few and considered the hallmark of professionalism in club management since 1965.

As General Manager, David went on to lead San Luis Obispo Country Club from July 2017 to November 2022, making strides in nearly every area of the operation and consistently improving the member experience. This included multiple

capital improvements, and a major course renovation, while creating a capital reserve study to help navigate the Club’s future. In the fall of 2022, he received a professional recruitment phone call for the extraordinary opportunity to become the General Manager of Palos Verdes Golf Club. After an international search, he was one of 17 General Manager candidates interviewed by the board and selection committee. his private club and hospitality background, entrepreneurial experience, and vision for the Club’s future, aligned with the goals for PVGC. David took the lead at PVGC on Nov. 7, 2022. Now, just nine months in, it seems like a perfect fit for both the Club and the Stocke family.

The Stocke’s older daughter, Peyton, 17, a rising senior at Palos Verdes high School, looks forward to joining the girls’ varsity golf team this fall. She has played as a varsity player since her first year at San Luis Obispo high School, earning MVP honors as a sophomore and the lowest-scoring average in both her freshman and sophomore years. She has played in over 100 golf tournaments since beginning to compete as a 9-year-old on various junior tours. her tournament schedule has included the California Junior Girls State Championships, Cal Women’s Amateur Championship, u.S. Kids State Invitationals, Future Champions Tour events, qualifiers, and Drive, Chip, and Putt, where she has made it to the Sub-Regionals twice. She is also a talented artist and has a love for fashion and skateboarding.

Parker, 14, will be a freshman at PV high School this fall. She also looks forward to joining the girls’ varsity golf team, playing out of PVGC under Coach

She has made it to the Sub-Regionals of the Drive, Chip, and Putt event three times and has accumulated over 65 trophies, medals, and ribbons since learning to play golf at Age 6. Parker has a passion for fashion, jewelry/crafts, and hanging out with friends. Recently turning 13, Dawson, will be an 8th grader at Palos Verdes Intermediate School this fall. Currently, he plays on the PGA Junior League Team for Palos Verdes Golf Club; this is his fifth season on a PGA Junior League team. he has made the PGA Jr. League All-Stars multiple times and competed on the SLO Junior Golf Tour. he looks forward to playing more junior tours in the future and joining the team at PV high. he enjoys STEM, and coding and can already type at a blistering pace of 95 WPM. he also likes to shoot hoops and boogie boards with the family.

holly shares,

The thing we’ve noticed is that Palos Verdes can be as big or as small as you want it. We are off the hill several times a week for the beach, dining out, and shopping. Rather than going to a gym, I like walking and hiking all over the Peninsula. The views are spectacular, and have been a great way for me to spend time with friends and get to know the neighborhoods. We are a very active and adventurous family. David and I enjoy snowboarding; Peyton likes the new skatepark in Redondo; Dawson likes going out and golfing with Dad, and Parker likes hanging out at the Pen Center with friends.

David is honored to lead a club that was built by world-renowned architects. Palos Verdes Golf Club is the only club of its kind with stunning South bay Ocean views on multiple holes, where you can see from Redondo beach to Malibu. The course is green and lush, with natural slopes and elevation changes, providing interest for players of all levels. The greens are fast and true, the fairways are pure, and the views will make your mouth drop. Combine that with a charming, down-home ambiance and an exceptional member community, and you’ll find a truly winning combination. The members and residents deeply cherish the unique history and traditions of Palos Verdes Golf Club and the PV Peninsula.

The board of Directors, committees, members, and professional staff take great pride in the Club. They are passionate about promoting the game of golf and delivering excellence in dining, recreation, and events for fellow members, guests, and the City of Palos Verdes Estates residents. The Club recently hosted one of the most prestigious women’s collegiate championships for its 27th year

in a row, the Therese hession Regional Challenge Presented by Northrop Grumman. This event brings the Club and community much admiration and praise.

The 2022 LPGA Palos Verdes Championship and the 2023 LPGA DIO Implant LA Open add to the lore of PVGC. It was an honor to host two prominent LPGA championships in back-to-back years, and the Club is signing an extension to host again in 2024-2025.

David concludes,

Add it all up and you have hit a hole-in-one –something I have still not done. My only hope is that my wife and children beat me to the punch, knock down some pins, rack up some aces, and match my father’s fab four aces. In the meantime, I will enjoy the great stories of the many PVGC members and toast to their victories, holes-in-one, and continue to watch the history of this great Club unfold.

holly, being the heart of the family, sums up their PV experience so far, ’The best thing about Palos Verdes is that it leaves nothing to be desired. If you took the favorite parts of our lives in the bay Area, Palm Springs, Scottsdale, and San Luis Obispo, then merge them into one, you would get the Palos Verdes Peninsula. We have lived in all these places, but Palos Verdes is the only place that has it all. We have traveled and moved enough to appreciate the good life, so when you find it all in one place, you can relax and not worry about what’s next. That is peace of mind and the best thing about living here.’

CSC South Bay Hosts Celebration of Leader in Sound Healing Jeralyn Glass

Introduces Transformational New Tool in the Field of Crystal Sound Healing

Cancer Support Community South bay (CSC South bay) hosted an event to celebrate Jeralyn Glass, internationally acclaimed singer, musician, teacher and leader in the field of sound healing on Saturday, July 8. The event introduced Glass’s first-of-its-kind Sound healing Oracle Card Deck published by hay house which provides an interactive experience with the placement of qR codes on each card. The codes allow users to access the harmonics of crystal alchemy singing bowls through their mobile device.

Glass has been offering free sound therapy programs with the crystal alchemy singing bowls at CSC South bay since 2016. The class has been so popular that there is often a waiting list.

“Our participants love the class for the calming reprieve and relief it brings to cancer,” said CSC South bay Program Director/COO Nancy Lomibao. “They tell me it is magical and transformative, how they are pain free for that hour, and that all their anxiety and stress floats away.”

For more information on Jeralyn Glass and the Sound healing Oracle Card Deck, visit www.crystalcadence.com.

La Venta Inn Is saVed!

The Community Rallies Around Peninsula’s Oldest Building

La Venta Inn is a provider. birthplace of the Peninsula, the 100-year-old Palos Verdes historic landmark is not only the oldest building on the hill, but since 1923, it has also provided jobs, fulfilled dreams, and served as the backdrop of countless memories. Thanks to an outpouring of support from our community, this extraordinary Spanish-style villa overlooking the Pacific will continue its long tradition of providing far into the future.

“This community answered the call to share their thoughts and feelings,” says La Venta concession-

aire/proprietor Meg Walker, who took over operations in 2021.” They wanted to stand up for what they believe in, which is La Venta and its place in this community.”

Situated in a residential area, La Venta is no stranger to neighborhood traffic and noise complaints. based on an ordinance enacted in 1940, the owners have always tried to be good neighbors, peacefully coexisting with the community.

When Walker and her Redondo beach catering company Made by Meg took over after the COVID

shutdown, the city of Palos Verdes Estates decided to take a new look at the old ordinance and approached La Venta’s owners and new proprietor Meg Walker about trying to be more specific as to the uses of the Inn.

While also providing neighbors with counted-on expectations, Walker says their mutual goal was to come up with regulations, enabling La Venta to continue to operate as a viable business.

“I can’t speak on behalf of the city but I can say that the city took a lot of time as well as resources to look closely at the issue and listen to everyone who wanted to voice their concerns. They did an amazing job mediating what probably felt like an impossible conversation at times,” Walker explains.

“Since 2021, we have worked with the city through the planning commission as well as the city council to come up with a way that we can operate peacefully in the neighborhood and come up with operating guidelines that I believe answer many neighbor concerns. The property formerly did events until midnight, but we now agree to end at 10 p.m. There were never any limits on capacity, and that’s not a part of the city code, but we agreed to a maximum of 200 occupants.”

because so many people feel strongly about La Venta’s place on the hill, Walker says the successful campaign to save La Venta included almost 50 neighbors in bright yellow T-shirts showing up to city council meetings in support of our iconic PV landmark. There were many difficult conversations but the possibility of closing La Venta altogether was probably one of the toughest. An astounding 500-plus letters of support from community members proves that every voice counts and it’s worth the effort to stand up for your beliefs.

“After a lot of love from the community, and a lot of work on the part of the city and neighbors coming forward with their concerns, I think this is the best neutral ground we can find, and we are just so grateful,” Walker says. She believes that it is up to the community to keep La Venta alive so it can continue to be the provider it has always been.

“my grandmother, marjorie Hall, passed away very recently. she was such a light! the last time i saw her, she was wearing a bright yellow save la venta t-shirt. it stands out because she was born in 1923, the year that la venta was built. i was reflecting on her amazing person and realized that our bodies, realistically, don’t make it as long as our buildings and we must appreciate that. We can all support and take care of what’s here in front of us and hope that a generation that truly treasures la venta works hard to keep it alive for the next 100 years, i truly believe that is our charge.”

do you love la venta inn? did you or someone you love get married there? the iconic landmark has touched the hearts and lives of so many pv residents and friends. if la venta brought you wedding joy, we want to hear from you. in celebration of la venta’s 100th anniversary, we are asking readers to submit your la venta wedding photos. send them to info@palosverdesmagazine.com and we will publish them in an upcoming issue.

Chamber OrChestra Of the sOuth bay

Celebrating 41 Years of Classical Music on the Peninsula

The Chamber Orchestra of the South bay (COSb) is ringing in its 41st season with something contemporary and original. Known for providing high-quality fully professional classical music to audiences, COSb is a cultural gem and beloved Palos Verdes community institution.

A chamber orchestra provides a warmer and more intimate atmosphere than a traditional orchestra. Chamber music is generally music composed for a small group of instruments like those who once performed in a palace chamber.

In our modern world COSb offers a unique musical experience designed for everyone to enjoy. The residential professional orchestra of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Performing Arts Center at the Norris Theater is entering its 41st season with Maestro hector Salazar conducting and new president Mr. Ron DeFrees at the helm. DeFrees recently shared an update on the state of the orchestra with PV Magazine.

pv magazine: What do you envision for the future of the Chamber Orchestra of the South bay? ron deFrees, cosB president: It is going to be another great season, just a little bit different. In the past we have held five full concerts at the Norris. A full program is between 26 and 33 musicians. This season we are going to start with something different. The first show to kick of the season will be the boston Pops at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. There will be 16 to 18 musicians performing an interactive program with dinner and drinks September 10 at 4:00 p.m. at the golf club.. We thought the golf club membership would love that kind of music and that type of evening

so in addition to catering to our normal golf club members we are hoping to attract a new and younger audience. pvm: That sounds like fun.

rd: Yes, we expect it to be fun. For our last concert back in April we did beethoven to broadway instead of our traditional performance and patrons and attendees loved it and they want to see more of that.

We used to sell out all five of our performances every year. Recently though, audiences started to age and in the wake of Covid audiences have become much smaller. We have lost some patrons to moving away and we have not done as much advertising as we should. Last year the audience was half what it used to be but we are not alone. All orchestras are suffering the same problem. With music streaming and other advances, and I have done a lot of research, we’ve found we have to change with the audience and so we are.

We know we have to start advertising so we will. We plan to hold one full orchestra performance with 26-33 musicians next April. After the Pops evening in September there will be three concerts with 16-18 musicians in November, January and March. One will probably be all winds and we will have a soloist at each performance as we have always been well-known for our soloists.

We do get many of the best professional musicians to perform and we honestly believe the quality of music and performances will continue to be a cut above all the others.

For tickets to the boston Pop performance and dinner or to become a supporter of COSb visit www.mycosb.org

MEET CAShMERE PV PET OF T h E MONT h

Cashmere is a six-year-old female King Charles Cavalier.

Her owner, Alison Lee is a native Californian who moved to New York for work where she adopted and rescued Cashmere from a puppy store that was getting shut down. Alison shares Cashmere’s story.

“Wanting to emulate Charlotte from Sex in the City who also had a King Charles named Elizabeth Taylor, Alison was excited to adopt Cashmere from the window of a puppy store one hot summer July afternoon in 2017 and it was love at first puppy lick.”

“Cashmere became the fanciest Cavalier in the city that year modeling for puppy brands and TV shows.” After a few years in New York Alison returned home to Palos Verdes where she and Cashmere run the Cavalier Club Meetup Group.

Alison chose Cashmere’s name for her love of cashmere sweaters and their soft cozy feel just like Cashmere’s fur. Cashmere Mist is also one of Alison’s favorite Donna Karan perfumes so it is pretty fitting. Cashmere’s nicknames include Cashy CashyGirl and Cash.

“The funniest thing about Cashmere is that her eyes focus in different directions so you never know if she’s looking at you. She also has a little prance when she walks and struts” Cashmere has been seen on CNBC’s “The Dogs of the Upper East Side” as well as a TV reality show with her mommy called “The Proposal.”

Alison loves Cashmere and says “She is the tiniest little love and comforts you when you need it, she is so loving and kind with the purest little soul. She loves doing spins and twirls for her treats and wakes up early for her morning hard-boiled egg.”

Cashmere has been on over 55 flights all over the country and is quite the traveler! She enjoys her dog bags and is the best girl when flying.

When asked if her pet was spoiled, Alison said,”I think spoiled comes with the name Cashmere. She has a closet of clothes including cute dresses, leashes, and harnesses. Cashmere also has an Instagram @cashmeregirl as well as is a influencer for Doggie Republic. Use her code CASHMERE10 for a discount. She loves wearing pearls and dressing up for events or around town with mommy. She loves getting groomed and she has a best friend named Mimi, another cavalier in her neighborhood, who she goes on wagon walks with.”
