iI JUST EXPERIENCED my first late sunset of the year and I’m feeling rejuvenated and excited about what’s to come. I’m embracing the coming season wholeheartedly. Summer in Ottawa is something special. The city truly comes alive!

This summer, I’ve compiled a list of must-do activities in Ottawa, some I’ve surprisingly never tackled despite living here for 11 years. One of the top items on my agenda is experiencing the adrenaline rush of white water rafting along the Ottawa River – something I’ve always wanted to try. I’m eager to conquer new hiking trails in Gatineau Park, explore fresh dining spots, and tackle some DIY projects, like my very own citrus-themed wood tray. Check out the how-to on page 32.

We’re thrilled to introduce you to a lineup of skilled local business professionals who will ignite your creativity and energize your next renovation project. Plus, we’re shining a spotlight on three extraordinary local homes, each boasting its own distinct charm and character. Nestled within the heart of central Ottawa, discover what sets these projects apart and where the inspiration from each originated.

Get ready to make this summer one for the books!

Harmony is a beautiful thing, especially involving our Krumpers Solar Blinds. Because when it comes to Krumpers Solar Blinds two sides are better than one. With our unique two-sided design (summer/winter) you simply turn the blinds around to control heat in summer and heat loss in winter while allowing a clear, unobstructed view. No more harsh temperatures in your home; enjoy overall temperature and UV control which helps keep you comfortable, energy-efficient and protects your furniture, flooring and artwork.

Krumpers Solar Blinds combines the perfect elements of nature, filter and insulator to create comfort, beauty and energy efficiency. Krumpers allows you to transverse the seasons without sacrificing the view or the light.

Skylights and trapezoid windows are a wonderful feature in many homes. But sometimes, these unique architectural elements cause a great deal of heat in the summer and heat loss in the winter. Krumpers has engineered a solution to address both form and function.

The clean lines, straightforward functionality, beauty and energy efficiency of Krumpers Solar Blinds have garnered not only customer endorsement, national awards such as Ecoliving and Innovation of the Year but moreover a loyal following of brand ambassadors.

So, when in doubt let Krumpers Solar Blinds keep you cool, calm and collected just like the photo of this room during our last heat wave.

Summer is here, and the long-awaited sunshine and warmth have finally

arrived, however the pleasant warmth turns to unpleasant heat, and we just had a brief preview of what lies ahead this summer.

The smart-tech, cutting-edge Krumpers Solar Blinds are a brilliant option in window coverings. The summer side will reflect 72 percent of the heat from coming into your home as well as provide 98 percent UV protection. When turned to the winter position, Krumpers Solar Blinds will once again allow for a clear view while actually generating heat from indirect light (2,096 BTUs per hour for a 4’x4’ window). Krumpers Solar Blinds helps set the tone for the bright, comfortable and beautiful surroundings of your home. Now more than ever, our homes have become our “happy place”. Krumpers helps harness and gorgeously control the temperature of your home year-round. The innovative technology from Krumpers Solar Blinds provides an unparalleled level of comfort and energy savings. Based on independent lab results, Krumpers Solar Blinds have been illustrated to reduce cooling and heating costs by up to 42 percent. Furthermore, the level of comfort that one experiences with Krumpers Solar Blinds are beyond measure.

Krumpers Solar Blinds are proudly made in Canada. The blinds cost $50 per square foot and have a five-year unlimited warranty. “People just aren’t aware of the options and how financially prudent solar solutions can be,” says Diana Livshits, owner of Krumpers. aAS WE DIVE INTO THIS ISSUE, with sun-filled homes full of inspiration for decorating and entertaining, you might find yourself drifting down memory lane, reminiscing about summers past. Those magical, warm, sun-drenched days that seemed to stretch on forever, when time moved at its own leisurely pace.

I will never forget many blissful days spent at my grandparents’ cottage. Surrounded by water and nature, their wee island cottage was a sanctuary of joy and innocence. Time passed in the blink of an eye as cousins played games for hours, creating memories that would last a lifetime. In a world that seems to move too fast, it’s these simple pleasures that remind us of the beauty of slowing down and savouring the moment. As we turn the pages of this issue, take a moment to cherish the memories of summers gone by, and create some new ones of our own.

Our family loved nothing more than a full day of picnicking by a lake. We would all tumble into the car and drive to some surprise destination to spend a day playing by the water. It seemed my father cooked all day as he came fully equipped with a charcoal barbecue and gas stove. The ride home always included a stop for ice cream before we fell asleep. To plan a beautiful picnic of your own, you’ll find stylish ideas in our article, Take A Look At What’s In My Picnic Basket. Staying home to relax and entertain? Discover tips on styling a bar cart and a recipe to serve up a delicious flank steak salad.

Have a safe and delightful summer, whatever your plans may be!

A Sense of (Re)PURPOSE

If you want to create a one-of-a-kind home, incorporate salvaged materials. They add an immediate sense of history and heritage to a renovation or new build, which is nearly impossible to replicate with new materials.

There is also a significant sustainable benefit when you repurpose an item as you eliminate some of the environmental implications associated with purchasing new, including the procurement of raw materials and the consumption associated with the manufacturing process and transportation of goods.

Be mindful that there is a labour cost related to salvaging architectural materials, as it is more time-intensive in demolition to remove items without damage than it is to go in with a sledgehammer. Also, it takes time to prepare items or materials for reuse (such as cleaning, removing nails, sanding, planing, re-enamelling, etc.). However, these costs can generally be offset by saving on disposal fees and the cost of new materials.

Where To Look

If you know at the outset of your project that you’d like to include reclaimed materials, set aside the appropriate time to search before your project begins. You can source items at architectural salvage companies, antique fairs and flea markets, online buy and sells, garage sales, the local landfill (some offer a reuse area, but check with your local municipality for conditions), and local Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

If you have friends, family or neighbours renovating a century home or demolishing an old building, approach them to inquire if any materials are available. Always ask for approval before you help yourself to a bin outside a demolition site.

What To Look For

Depending upon the scope of your project, you may be engaging the services of a design and construction team. Discuss at the outset to make them aware of your intention to integrate reclaimed materials and provide any details on items you have already sourced. This will help ensure your contractor and trades can budget more accurately for material, time and labour costs. It also means that the contractor can place reinforcement where required, plan how to transition from one material height to another and make any recommendations from their experience.

When sourcing goods and materials, thoroughly inspect their condition. Beyond the desired patina and authentic features such as handchiseled details and nail holes, closely examine to see if there are any structural defects or damage that may affect the viability of reusing the item. An example would be reclaimed wainscotting stored in a humid location. The tongue and the groove may no longer fit together, and each piece would need to be remilled, which can add significant time to installation.

When purchasing, ask about the history of the product or material, such as where it originated and why it was part of a demolition. This offers authentication (especially if costly) and provides an interesting point of conversation to your home/project.

Items must also adhere to current building code standards. Items such as salvaged balustrades and spindles may need to be modified, as the height requirements have changed over the years. Vintage light fixtures need to be upgraded by a certified professional to pass electrical safety

standards. Mantels may need to be adjusted to ensure they provide the required clearances of the fireplace unit that will be installed.

How To Incorporate

How repurposed materials can be incorporated into your home is limited only by your imagination, the willingness of trades, and the building code (to ensure the safety and well-being of occupants).

EXAMPLES INCLUDE:

• Installing reclaimed timber as ceiling cladding or beams, floor coverings, wall panelling or wainscotting.

• Repurposing fireplace mantels in an updated design.

• Installing reclaimed windows in interior partitions to create a barrier while still allowing the light and the view beyond to pass through.

• Integrating a cast iron or concrete sink in the laundry room.

• Creating a focal point with a unique, handcarved interior door.

• Hanging a collection of vintage lights.

• Installing reclaimed brick or stone as a floor, feature wall or fireplace surround.

Whether you use a little or a lot, repurposing is a guaranteed way for your home to evoke the character and charm inherent in the materials. OH

FOUNDATIONS of Enduring Style

Creating a home that reflects its owner’s personality and lifestyle, and stands the test of time, is similar to building a wardrobe. Just as we invest in classic, well-made and tailored pieces that endure through seasons, our homes demand foundational elements that serve as the backbone of enduring interiors. These are the must-have basics that make up every well-designed home, and the qualities to look for as you shop.

THE SOFA A Centrepiece of Comfort and Style

The sofa is undeniably the heart of any living room – a functional element and an aesthetic focal point –making it an indispensable investment. When choosing a sofa with staying power, prioritize classic lines and neutral colours. Choose materials such as leather or high-quality fabric that not only exude sophistication, but also promise durability. A well-constructed sofa with a sturdy frame and timeless design ensures that it seamlessly integrates into various design styles, which will change through the years.

ACCENT CHAIRS with Lasting Appeal

Complementing the sofa, chairs play a crucial role in providing additional seating and contributing to the overall aesthetic of the room. Look for chairs with clean lines and versatile designs that can adapt to changing trends. Materials such as solid wood or metal frames paired with quality upholstery contribute to the longevity of these pieces. Remember, accent chairs can be reupholstered or refinished, making them a flexible investment that evolves with your changing taste.

Of course, comfort comes first. To that end, here are some things to consider: Your hips should be positioned slightly higher than your knees to facilitate easy standing. Your feet should comfortably touch the floor when you’re sitting deep in the chair. Test the armrests and make sure you can comfortably rest your arms. Continued

DINING ROOMS

Where Memories and Meals Unfold

Your dining area will host countless gatherings, family meals, important milestones and memories that will last a lifetime. Ensure they’re memorable for all the right reasons, including comfort and style. Choose a dining table with a sturdy construction and a design that transcends passing fads. Wooden tables, whether in classic oak or rich mahogany, have proven to be enduring. Complement the table with chairs that mirror its timeless qualities. Similar to your accent seating, dining chairs can be reupholstered or even repainted to adapt to your style preferences.

BEDFRAME AND MATTRESS

Where Comfort Meets Elegance

The bedroom, a sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation, demands a bedframe and mattress that stand the test of time. Classic wooden bedframes, whether in sleigh or platform styles, exude timeless elegance. Pair it with a high-quality mattress for a perfect blend of comfort and sophistication. Investing in a well-made bed ensures a focal point for the bedroom that will make every night a dream come true.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS

The Unsung Heroes

Functional and stylish storage solutions sometimes take a back seat, but they’re arguably the most important piece of all. Timeless additions such as bookshelves, dressers and sideboards not only keep clutter at bay but also contribute to the overall aesthetic of the space. When selecting storage furniture, consider well-crafted pieces with clean lines. Wood, especially in natural finishes, proves to be a versatile and enduring choice for these essential elements.

In the pursuit of timeless interior design, the key lies in investing wisely in foundational furnishings. Emphasize classic materials, enduring silhouettes and superior craftsmanship to ensure that your home remains a haven of style and comfort for years to come. By making thoughtful choices in these key pieces, you not only build a beautiful living space but also create a home that evolves with you and is a testament to the art of timeless design. OH

CITRUS Tray

MATERIALS

15-inch round piece of wood 2 paintbrushes

Lime green and white acrylic paint

Hardware

Topcoat

HOW-TO

STEP ONE

Start by painting a coat of the lime green paint approximately ½ to ¾-inch around the edge of the round wood.

STEP TWO

Mix one part of lime green paint to five parts white paint to achieve a pastel green shade. Apply this mixture along the edge of the bright green paint, extending approximately one inch.

STEP THREE

To create the citrus sections, find the centre of the round and paint a circle using the pastel green paint. Then, use a pencil to sketch eight sections around the circle, using the centre as your guide. Keep in mind, sections do not need to be perfect – real citrus fruits are naturally imperfect.

STEP FOUR

Next, mix approximately three parts white paint to one part green paint. Paint rounded triangle shapes within each section to create the citrus segments. Fill in each segment with the pastel green colour. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

STEP FIVE

Apply two coats of topcoat to the tray for durability. Allow each coat to dry completely. Add hardware.

Use your citrus tray to add a refreshing touch to your next gathering. OH

MODERN MINIMALIST MAKEOVER

It’s not every day you decide to update your backyard and end up renovating your entire home. But that’s what happened when homeowners Yang and Rachel began a landscaping project in their Centretown West backyard.

and dining

w“WE BOTH REALLY ENJOY GARDENING and wanted to grow our own vegetables. To make room for everything we were hoping to include in the yard, we decided to remove the garage,” Yang says.

However, this decision ultimately sparked a series of events that began with the removal of the garage and eventually extended to altering the entire layout of the home.

They chose Crossford Construction as the designer and builder for the project after getting positive referrals from friends.

“We knew people who had worked with them and were happy with the

result and experience,” says Yang.

The homeowners are both graphic designers by trade and they came to the project with a clear vision of what they wanted their home to be. Crossford helped make their vision a reality by handling all the technical aspects and turning their ideas into a cohesive plan.

Doug McCausland, general manager at Crossford says the working relationship between the homeowners and Crossford was extremely smooth.

BOTTOM LEFT: A mix of open and concealed storage solutions add flair and interest to this wellused kitchen.

“They had a very good sense of what they wanted in terms of colours and material selections and we provided the space planning and exterior design to bring everything together,” says Doug.

The kitchen and dining area were the main focus of the renovation. Yang loves to cook and calls himself a “home chef” who spends most of his time in the kitchen. Because the old kitchen was small and very closed off from the rest of the house, it made it difficult for the family to spend time together.

“It was a big deal for us to have an openconcept space where I could cook, and Rachel could sit nearby, and we could talk easily,” says Yang.

They hired Cedar Ridge Designs & Custom Cabinetry to help with the design and execution of the built-in cabinets and shelves in the kitchen and mudroom.

“Their ideas allowed for efficient use of what was originally dead space but is now valuable storage,” says Yang.

The addition of a powder room on the first floor significantly improves convenience, eliminating the need for guests to go upstairs to use the bathroom. It stands out with its striking green hexagon tile and beautiful brass fixtures.

As with any project, there were challenges. But Yang says Crossford was always ready with solutions when problems arose. The cantilevered front porch roof was one of those solutions.

“The neighbourhood zoning did not allow for a carport or garage,” explains Doug. “So instead of a traditional carport, we built a roof projecting over the front porch and side entry that also created a sheltered parking spot.”

The partially-vaulted ceiling in the main bedroom was another pleasant surprise that was borne from a lack of supplies during the pandemic.

“There were no trusses available and everything was on back order at the time. The client saw the bedroom ceiling before it had been framed and decided to keep it like that,” says Doug.

The unexpected change makes the room feel bigger and more open, which the homeowners love.

Creating their dream backyard was almost as important to the homeowners as the interior renovation. They worked with Yards Unlimited Landscaping Inc. to create the landscape plan for the backyard, which includes a patio, pathways, gardens, and a greenhouse.

“It’s really everything we wanted. We could have made the house bigger with larger interior spaces, but we opted for a balance between the backyard space and just enough interior space because we really wanted the inside to still feel cosy,” explains Yang. Continued on page 42

Crossford helped connect the two spaces by designing the back deck with an exterior dining area and outdoor kitchen. They also added the large floor-to-ceiling patio doors, which have become a favourite feature of the new home.

When asked how they feel now that the project is complete, the homeowners could not be more delighted.

“The quality of Crossford’s work exceeds what I’ve seen from other builders,” says Yang. “We’ve been living in the finished house for over two years and there have really been no issues at all. Zero. That level of craftsmanship speaks for itself.” Continued on page 44

key limePIE BARS

You’ve got to try these creamy, tart and sweet bars, and celebrate a bite-size taste of summer. These bars have a buttery graham-cracker crust layered with creamy key lime filling and topped with zesty whipped cream!

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JENELLE MCCULLOCH

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: The bars will require four hours of cooling time and are best if given time to firm up in the fridge after assembling. This is a great makeahead dessert option!

Ingredients

CRUST

1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs

6 Tbsp butter, unsalted and melted

FILLING

5 large egg yolks

2 tsp key lime zest

²/³ cup key lime juice

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

WHIPPED CREAM TOPPING

1 ½ cups heavy cream

¼ cup powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

Lime zest

52 | ourhomes SUMMER 2024

Directions

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line an 8-by-8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some to hang over the sides. This will make it easy to take the bars out of the pan. In a bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs and butter until combined. Press mixture into the prepared baking pan and bake for 10 minutes in the oven, or until slightly golden.

Prepare the filling by mixing the egg yolks, lime zest, lime juice and sweetened condensed milk.

Pour the filling onto the crust and smooth the top. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the filling is mostly set. The centre will be a little wobbly. Let cool at room temperature, then move to the fridge to set for four hours.

Once the bars are cooled, whip the heavy cream with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Whip until combined and medium peaks form. Spread the whipped cream on top of the key lime bars. Top with lime zest. Place back in the fridge to set for another 30 minutes. Slice into bars and enjoy! OH

Take a look at what’s in my PICNIC BASKET!

YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SUMMER SNACKING ON A BLANKET

1. PICNIC BASKET

A good basket will be well made with a sturdy handle, lined, and include an insulated compartment that provides temperature control for your food. I prefer to select a basket that comes with useful accessories like cutlery, plates and a corkscrew, so I don’t have to remember to pack those separately.

2. TOTE BAG

It’s a given that not everything you want to bring will fit in your basket. Think about how you will transport your picnic blanket, serving pieces, an instant camera and a baguette. I opt for a hands-free backpack that aesthetically reflects the picnic theme since I’ll already be carrying my basket.

Sunny days mean spending as much time as possible outside. If you’re like me, the idea of packing up all the necessities and heading to your local beach or park for lunch, happy hour or a sunset snack sounds like the best way to embrace summer. With the right items, it can be just as special to arrange a picnic in your backyard (or dining room if it’s inclement weather). Here’s a collection of my favourite picnic basics that you can keep on hand for when the mood for finger food strikes!

3. PICNIC BLANKET

Select a blanket that’s versatile enough to use as a tablecloth or ground cover and substantial enough that it won’t fly away in the wind. You’ll want it to be waterproof in case the grass is damp, quick-drying, machine washable, easily portable and cute because it’s the anchor to your entire setup.

4. GLASSWARE

Many picnic baskets include wine glasses, but I think it’s important to use unbreakable drinkware as a safety precaution. Stylish and sophisticated glasses that are not actually made of glass won’t cause any trouble if one slips out of your hand while you’re dishing out the potato salad.

5. NAPKINS

This is your chance to add some personality to your picnic! Go bright, go bold, go patterned, go with a funny saying, go themed, go with what you like.

6. SERVING TRAY

A bamboo or melamine tray is light to pack and provides you with stability when you’re dining on uneven ground. Alternatively, you can use it to carry food from your kitchen to your backyard. Set drinks on the tray or pile up the watermelon slices!

9. FOOD WRAPS AND REUSABLE CONTAINERS

When you’re preparing your food, think about how you’re going to get it from point A to point B. Keeping a reliable set of reusable containers with lids and beeswax food wraps in various sizes in your pantry will allow you to quickly assemble your picnic when the forecast is sunny.

7. CHEESE TRAY WITH KNIVES

I’m a big fan of multi-purpose products like a cheese board that also houses all the tools you need. Look for a set that includes at least three styles of knives so you can easily cut, spread or fork your assortment.

8. MELAMINE SNACK DISHES

10. BEST FOODS

Bringing along a few exceptional-quality melamine serving pieces will elevate your picnic and help you avoid snacking out of unsightly sandwich bags. When you’re not picnicking, you can use them poolside or dockside too.

Include a selection of meats and cheeses, olives, crackers, baguettes, dips, sandwiches, prepared salads, smoked fish, fruits, lemon bars, cookies, champagne, wine, sparkling water, lemonade, anything you can eat with your fingers and anything you can elegantly eat on a stick. I enjoy adding food that no one will expect like flower croissants. Press edible flowers into crescent dough, roll into the shape of croissants, and bake for the prettiest pastry. OH

BLENDING HISTORY WITH MODERNITY

58 | ourhomes SUMMER 2024 home & designer
EVERY HOME HAS A STORY, AND THE LATEST CHAPTER FOR THIS GLEBE HOME BEGAN WITH A HEARTFELT LETTER, PENNED FROM HOPEFUL BUYERS TO SELLERS.

During the peak of the pandemic’s impact on the housing market in Ottawa, and amidst fierce competition from other potential buyers in the highly coveted area, Alex Nihmey penned a letter to the sellers, expressing her vision to enhance the house and prepare it for its next chapter of growth and transformation.

It was the humble acknowledgement of the home’s history that sealed the deal.

“We went into competition against seven other offers,” says Alex. “We were successful because we wanted to keep as much of the home as we could.” Continued on page 61

60 | ourhomes SUMMER 2024

The home represented a culmination of converging opportunities for Alex; the chance to challenge her creative and entrepreneurial sensibilities, while creating a dream home for her family.

A career banker, Alex had always been drawn to the drama of the big reveal with home renovations, and the timing was right to pursue her passion.

“During the time of our renovation, I was completing an interior design course through the Interior Design Institute,” says Alex. “I decided I was going to go for it and use my home for my assignments to complete my design certification.” She has since launched her own interior design company called dapper Home

Characteristic of the Glebe neighborhood’s charm, this home dates back to the 1930s. However, some of its original design elements, like the compact, boxy rooms, didn’t quite suit the modern needs of Alex and her husband, Mathieu Verville-Rose.

However, Alex says they were enchanted with the historic details, so consciously incorporated that into the design. “There were some classic window features with latches, so we kept what we could on the main floor of those.” Continued on page 63

A light-filled kitchen and dining space is complemented by natural materials and a neutral palette – a place where cooking and entertaining intertwine effortlessly. OPPOSITE, TOP LEFT: A modern and timeless kitchen design. Alex chose to stay away from bold colours, opting instead for texture and materials that would wear well over time. TOP RIGHT: A sleek and functional wet bar, complete with a sink and mini-fridge, serves as the perfect entertaining space. BOTTOM: At the core of the kitchen’s design is a luxurious La Cornue stove.

Alex and Matt set out on a major renovation of the detached garage that created space for an office studio as well as elevated, functional features such as a basement dog wash and spaces for entertaining.

It was a team effort, with Alex managing the design and décor, while Niels Luettge of Open Concept Home Design completed the residential design and worked as the project manager, organizing all the trades.

The end product is a delightfully stylish family home that intricately layers the modern day over the past with key design and décor elements.

It’s common for homeowners to focus on colour palettes to set an aesthetic tone, but Alex favoured texture over colour.

“I didn’t go very bold with colours,” Alex says. “I do actually like a lot of colour, but for a lot of the rooms I chose texture and was able to enhance the different elements of design.”

For example, the kitchen is reflective of the décor theme throughout the home, which Alex says is modern-timeless.

If the kitchen is indeed the heart of the home, then at its very core lies the luxurious La Cornue stove from Appliance Canada, serving as the focal point from which the entire design concept took shape.

“Basically, every element was brought in around the oven,” says Alex, including textiles, tiles, colours and fixtures.

The kitchen is a soothing and stylish space, from an elegant range hood to sleek and subtle veining patterns on the Blackstone granite island, installed by The Granite Shop. There’s plenty of seating, brass plumbing fixtures (Preston Hardware) and a sophisticated tile backsplash (Euro Tile & Stone).

The kitchen unfolds into the dining room, where colour choices introduce just enough weight into the aesthetic with a moody, masculine bar featuring green cabinetry.

“We introduced colour with a darker cabinetry finish, so the style idea is having those opposing, complementary aesthetics,” says Alex.

Upstairs, the primary suite serves as a tranquil sanctuary. Neutral linens and paint hues provide a soothing backdrop, while bursts of colour are introduced through carefully-selected artwork.

The primary bathroom highlights Alex’s choice to focus on texture over colour, evident with the intricate tile work. Delicate green accents are strategically incorporated, seamlessly connecting with the design details of the floor below.

“There are some really classic finishes and there was a lot of play on tiles – a chevron pattern on the floor, a mosaic marble insert in the shower, and then green textured tiles on the wall over the vanity,” says Alex.

The deep soaker tub is a lovely focal point, placed perfectly just below a large window.

One of her favourite aspects of the home is the dog wash in the basement, a truly functional addition to the home that makes life so much easier (and cleaner) when returning inside with their dog Ozzie.

Essential Kitchen Items for Baking the PERFECT SUMMER PIE

You can turn baking into an interactive endeavour with your partner, kids and friends, or save it for a day when you’d like some solo time to get creative in the kitchen. Either way, you’ll want to make sure you have all the things you need to whip up a delicious dessert that’s good enough to win top prize at the local fair!

Start with an apron.

Chances are you’re going to get flour and a few squished blueberries on your shirt. Select an apron that has utility pockets for your kitchen accessories, like a handy dishtowel for quick cleanups and a whisk, spatula or wooden spoon. Take your favourite family recipe out of your card box, consult a cookbook, search online, poll the audience, phone a friend – basically ensure you have a plan ready for your pie.

Let’s be honest, pies are always a good idea! With a variety of homegrown fruits like strawberries, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches and early apples available throughout the summer months, fruit pies are truly a seasonal luxury in Ontario.

Next, account for all the tools you’ll use throughout the baking process.

Essential kitchen items to keep in your pantry include a good set of stainless steel mixing bowls for combining pie crust and filling ingredients, a stand mixer for effortlessly creating the perfect crust, measuring cups and spoons, a colander for washing your fruit and a reliable rolling pin to smooth out your pastry dough.

Once you’re ready to assemble the pie, choose a dish to bake it in.

With so many interesting options on the market now, you can use a traditional white ceramic dish, a glass dish or even one with a pop of colour and a matching bird that’s used to let the steam out while your pie is baking. If you’re testing a new recipe for something like key lime pie bars, opt for a non-stick pan that will easily release your treat! When the dish is lined with crust, the filling is poured and you’re ready to secure the top, try using a pastry crimper and cookie cutters to design the aesthetic. There are lots of tutorials online that show how to make lattice tops and custom cutouts that will transform your pie into a work of art. A sharp knife and pastry brush will prove beneficial to have on hand too. Many seasoned pastry chefs also recommend using a pie shield for baking, which is a thin ring placed around the edges that prevents the pastry from browning too fast.

Lastly, set your kitchen timer to pie o’clock, Remove your pie from the oven safely using an appropriately themed oven mitt, and get ready to enjoy the fruits of your labour! OH

WHAT’S TRENDING:

Current industry trends favour warmer, cosier spaces with a shift from grey palettes to warm tones and lots of texture. Clients are more open to subtle colours with green accents expected to make waves in 2024 as a bold choice for adding personality to interiors.

THE HOME STYLIST

Designer Lindsay Wolfe-Assaf founded her business, The Home Stylist, in 2016 after observing a notable gap in approachable design services within the city. With a firm belief in the significant impact of living environments on daily life, Lindsay’s mission is to craft inspiring spaces that evoke happiness, inspiration and productivity.

“I want to create a friendly, approachable environment for clients to  get excited about improving their homes,” Lindsay says.

“My clients are involved every step of the way. I’m happy to help people bring their visions to reality. Every home deserves to be beautiful. As a busy Mom I understand homes shouldn’t feel like a museum. They need to be functional and enhance your day-to-day living experience.”

OFFERINGS

Lindsay offers comprehensive home renovation design services, including in-home consultations, e-design options and full-service design. She adapts to varying client needs, providing initial direction or comprehensive project support from start to finish.

Grilled Steak

AND VEGETABLE SALAD

This salad is as fun to make as it is to eat. Fire up the grill and enjoy tender steak slices on a bed of mixed greens, grilled veggies, and tossed with a zesty vinaigrette.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 4-6 Servings

STEAK & MARINADE

1 - 1 ½ lbs flank steak

½ cup olive oil

¼ cup red wine vinegar

¼ cup soy sauce

¼ cup honey

2 cloves garlic, minced

½ tsp black pepper

SALAD

Vegetables of choice, such as corn on the cob, asparagus, tomatoes

1 Tbsp olive oil

Mixed greens (such as arugula and watercress)

¼ cup blue cheese

DRESSING

2 Tbsp Dijon mustard

1 Tbsp honey

1 garlic clove, minced

2 Tbsp red

wine vinegar or lemon juice

¼ tsp sea salt

¼ tsp

black pepper

2 Tbsp olive oil

DIRECTIONS

Before you begin: The steak will require 12-24 hours to marinate. It’s best to marinate the steak the night before.

In a Ziploc bag or bowl, combine all marinade ingredients. Place flank steak in marinade and coat. Let the steak marinate for 12-24 hours in the fridge.

Prepare vegetables for grilling by cutting them into appropriate sizes and brush lightly with olive oil. Remove the flank steak from the marinade. Grill veggies until charred. Cook the flank steak to your liking; for medium-rare, cook the steak for 9-12 minutes, flipping halfway through over medium-high heat. After grilling, allow veggies and steak to rest. Slice steak thinly across the grain.

Prepare the dressing by combining all dressing ingredients and whisking until combined. To assemble the salad, layer the vegetables and steak over a bed of mixed greens. Top with blue cheese crumbles and drizzle the dressing. OH

BUILDING WITH

NATURE IN MIND

A Custom Home in Ottawa’s Wellington West

In Ottawa, a city known for its abundant outdoor activities and lively community, Sarah Taber and Benjamin Watts built a home that reflected their passion for nature and one that integrated well with their active lifestyle.

Sarah, who bought a home in the Wellington West neighborhood in 2008, saw the area’s potential early on as it began to gentrify. After living in their 1910 single-bedroom house for nearly a decade, Sarah and Benjamin, having grown to love the evolving neighbourhood, started considering building options.

“I started contemplating a rebuild in 2011 and that became the longer-term goal. My husband moved in with me in 2012, and fell in love with the neighbourhood as well,” she says. The neighbourhood was really starting to change at that time and we both decided we liked it here so our plan was to tear down and rebuild on the lot.”

80 | ourhomes SUMMER 2024 feature

The homeowners built a home in Ottawa’s Hintonburg neighbourhood that reflected their active lifestyle and love for the outdoors. TOP RIGHT: The home features durable hardwood flooring from Barwood Flooring and a convenient mudroom with a direct path to the laundry room for easy cleanup after outdoor activities. MIDDLE RIGHT: An open-concept kitchen bathed in natural light features vibrant hints of colour and personal touches to make the space uniquely inviting. BOTTOM RIGHT: The homeowners worked with a very narrow lot in the Hintonburg neighbourhood when designing and building the home.

It was in 2017 when the couple first met Gordon Weima of Gordon Weima Design Build, who they took a liking to immediately. He understood their vision for their home and had both the design and build capabilities to bring their vision for their new home to life.

“The number one thing was even though we wanted a nice looking, modern house, we were clear from the beginning that we were pet owners, we were hikers, skiers, bikers, and we just didn’t want a house where we’d be afraid of stepping inside with our muddy gear on and our dogs. We said upfront it needed to be a house we could live in,” says Sarah.

Continued on page 82

ourhomes SUMMER 2024 | 81

In their new 1,980 sq. ft. home, they opted for a sturdy hardwood flooring (Barwood Flooring) throughout, as well as a mudroom off the back entrance. The house is designed with a direct route to the downstairs laundry room, allowing them to easily shed dirty clothes after a long day of biking or skiing.

“Gordon helped us with what would be practical from a lived-in perspective,” says Sarah.

The project presented Gordon with a blend of unique creative opportunities and challenges. The combination of a very narrow lot, poor soil quality in the area and stringent city bylaws all created hurdles through the design and build process.

“When we started construction, we had bad soil, so we had to do a whole engineered construction plan to do metal shoring and support along a whole side of the property. It was a complicated structure to build with various engineering issues,” says Gordon.

A creative challenge arose in maximizing natural light within the home, given the constraints of a narrow lot (the house is about 19 feet wide) that permitted only about seven per cent of the exterior side walls to have windows. To address this, Gordon strategically placed large windows on both the front and back of the house and added creative solutions utilizing light and glass in the interior to enhance the brightness and openness of the space. Continued on page 84

The homeowners’ personal style shines though with the use of vibrant accent colours and fun textiles.

The homeowners’ favourite spot, the third-floor den, features front and back rooftop patios and abundant natural light, making it ideal for outdoor relaxation or cosy reading. BELOW LEFT: Glass panels that follow the waterfall stairs filter natural light strategically into the middle of the home. BELOW RIGHT: A deck on the top floor of the home provides sweeping views of the surrounding neighbourhood.

“I’m a real light guy,” says Gordon. “In all my designs I aim to maximize light, not just into the house but into the centre of the house, and draw it into the living spaces.”

Gordon’s answer to achieving both an aesthetically pleasing and well-lit home was to install glass in some unsuspecting areas. Alongside the stairs, the glass serves dual purposes. One, it enhances the aesthetics of the home, emphasizing the waterfall staircase by Accurate Stairs + Railings – a showstopping feature. Secondly, the two-storey glass panel that follows the stairs through the home works to effectively distribute light throughout the centre of the home. A strategically

placed glass-floor panel further enhances light distribution through the three-plus-one bedroom home – a feature Gordon highlights as one of his favourites. Additionally, aesthetic lighting fixtures ( Electric) illuminate the home beautifully as the sun sets.

“There’s a room on the top floor, and it gets a lot of light,” he says. “So what we did was put glass in the floor. So now that’s bringing in light and it’s washing down below to the second floor, and then carries even further down to the stairs below.”

For the homeowners, it was imperative their home have as much natural light as possible.

“If I’m in my office on the second floor and have the stairs behind me, you can almost see light coming from both the floor glass panel above and the glass wall panel, it’s really pretty cool,” says Sarah. “We’re really glad we went with that.”

For Sarah, one of her favourite places in her home to relax is her en suite bathroom – a tranquil sanctuary, full of fun features like a skylight over the tub from Preston Hardware, green floor tile from Euro Stone & Tile and a double-sided fireplace from High Energy Gas & Wood

“Something that was really important for me was to have the en suite be a place to retreat and relax,” says Sarah. “I do a lot of cross-country skiing and my vision was to be able to come home, be in the bath with a glass of wine and the fireplace on, and with the skylight above you. If it’s snowing it’s a bit magical.”

The homeowners chose to forgo a traditional vanity in favour of a floating design from Gerry’s Custom Kitchens, which allows the large, full-scale window behind it to illuminate the space from both front and underneath. Instead of vanity mirrors, they enjoy an unobstructed, beautiful view of the large maple tree in their backyard – a feature borrowed from Gordon’s own home.

“It’s great, you’re brushing your teeth in the morning and you’re looking out to this gorgeous tree in your backyard,” says Gordon. “And in Hintonburg, there aren’t a lot of trees and yet it feels like you’re out at a cottage. We were really careful to save that big tree.” Gerry’s Custom Kitchens supplied all custom cabinetry.

Another favourite feature of the homeowners is their third-floor den. With rooftop patios front and back, and an abundance of natural light, it’s the perfect place to enjoy some time outside or curled up on the sofa with a good book.

It is evident that for Sarah and Benjamin, their home is more than just a structure – it’s a testament to a shared vision brought to life through the innovation and collaboration from Gordon and his team.

“If I were to do it all over again, I’d go the exact same route,” says Sarah. “We’d work with Gord again in a heartbeat. “It was just really great to work with him.”

Gordon echoes this sentiment, noting his favourite part about the project was working with the homeowners.

“It was a pleasure, I’d come up with some ideas and they’d love it and they were just open to ideas, easy to work with, just great clients.” OH

Green tile, large windows and natural light in the primary en suite are an ode to the couple’s love of nature.

ROOFS OF STEEL

The most important architectural feature of your home is your roof. Whatever you do with your roof sets the tone for everything else. A well-chosen roof dramatically increases curb appeal and keeps your home safe and structurally sound.

Most companies claim to be the best in their field –Roofs of Steel can actually prove it. Before we started our business, we listed the problems associated with metal roofs. Then we successfully solved them. This was easily achieved by basing everything on science, considering extreme weather, and looking longterm. You should never need to do roof maintenance again. Many people believe that if a roof is made of metal, it will automatically last a lifetime. This is not the case: it needs to be done properly. We are one of the very few companies in North America that still do roofs the old-fashioned (and proven) way. The only adjustments involve actual improvements.

The sheet metal installation looks industrial, with prominent lines. Others have a pattern, but it is computer-designed – also with an industrial look. Instead, our product was double embossed using a mould taken from a 150-year-old slate roof, for a beautiful natural look.

How to Properly Store FRUITS, VEGETABLES & HERBS

With rising food costs, finding ways to make food last longer and reduce food waste is a hot topic. Proper storage of fruits, vegetables and herbs is one of the most effective ways to maintain quality and freshness, and impacts how long your food will last.

Fruits & Vegetables

You might think all fresh produce belongs in the fridge, but this isn’t the case. Some items do better at room temperature, at least until they’re ripe, and some prefer a cool, dark place. And some have even more specific storage tips to keep them fresh longer.

BEST STORED IN THE FRIDGE

Apples, asparagus, green beans, berries, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, citrus, grapes, lettuce/leafy greens, mushrooms, peppers and zucchini.

SPECIAL STORAGE TIPS

Asparagus: Fill a mason jar or container with water, place the asparagus in with the stems down, and cover loosely with a plastic bag.

Berries: Wash, dry and remove any mouldy or soft berries before placing in a plastic container lined with paper towel or a clean towel. Leave the lid cracked.

Lettuce and leafy greens: There are two recommended methods for storage of greens. Either store them unwashed in the original container topped with a paper towel or a clean tea towel to absorb any excess moisture, or store in a salad spinner after it’s been washed and spun. Discard the excess water and cover with the lid.

Mushrooms: Store them in the packaging they came in, or in a paper bag.

Herbs

Similar to fruits and vegetables, fresh herbs will last longer if they’re stored properly.

BEST STORED IN THE FRIDGE

Cilantro, dill, mint, oregano, parsley and rosemary.

SPECIAL STORAGE TIPS

There are two suggested methods to store herbs. With both methods, wash, dry and trim a bit of the stems first. Then you can either store them like asparagus, in a jar or container with water, and cover loosely with a plastic bag, or wrap them in a damp paper towel and store in a plastic bag. OH

BEST STORED ON THE COUNTER TO RIPEN, AND THEN MOVED TO THE FRIDGE FOR LONGER STORAGE

Avocado, bananas, kiwi, mango, melons, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums and tomatoes.

BEST STORED IN A COOL, DARK, DRY PLACE

Garlic, onions, potatoes, squash and sweet potatoes.

SPECIAL STORAGE TIPS

Don’t store your onions (or bananas) near your potatoes and sweet potatoes. Onions and bananas release a gas called ethylene, which can cause potatoes to spoil quickly, since they’re sensitive to ethylene.

TIPS FOR STYLING YOUR PATIO BAR CART

The road to patio cocktails is paved with thrilling anticipation, from shopping for supplies to the art of crafting and ending with the highlight – consumption. Often eclipsed however, is the hub of this pseudo leisure sport, the home bar itself. A patio bar cart is the quintessential example of styled storage and is one of the most purposeful and functional additions to your summer evenings.

Here are our top five tips for styling your outdoor sip station:

ELEVATE WITH GAMES

Elevate your cart’s contents by staggering board games beneath the display. This will allow for each item to take its own centre stage and will introduce dimension to the spread. Bonus: an option for some post dinner fun!

FINESSE WITH INGREDIENTS

True, the purpose of your minibar is to (cutely) store all your magic potions and their proper vessels, but who said it had to stop there? Add some colour to your surface by including a dish of common garnishes, such as whole lemons or limes. For something especially seasonal, try a fruit spread alongside a DIY sangria bar!

ADD FRESH FLOWERS

Seldom does a space not improve following the addition of vegetation. A bouquet of flowers or a potted plant intermixed with your barscape can satisfy both the nose and the eyes, while adding dimension in its height, too. Trade secret: Mint will deter insects from your sugary spread while also acting as a garnish to many popular drinks. Cheers to double duty!

LEAVE CHEEKY SIGNAGE

Adorn your carafes with mini chalkboard signage or the like to let guests know what’s on the menu. Go punny with a bar joke, or shoutout a guest of honour with their own special tribute concoction.

KEEP THINGS CHILL

The warmer the weather, the more chilled the drinks must be. If a cooler feels too cluttered in your space, relocate bottles and cans to a more attractive bucket with ice option. Your ice supply will need more frequent replenishing, but your offerings will be on display and ready to quench. OH
