Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Women’s History Month

resident Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation establishing the first Women’s History Month celebrated by the United States Government on March 4th, 1988. In his proclamation, President Reagan commented, “Women continue to strengthen the family and enrich our lives with intellectual gifts, creative talents, and indomitable spirit.” Every March since that year has been officially recognized as Women’s History Month in the United States. We decided to celebrate this year’s Women’s History Month by recognizing some of the amazing women in our community. The Exceptional Women in Business section of this magazine highlights the accomplishments and talents of some of the women who make this city such a great place to live and raise a family. The contributions women have made to every field and endeavor are infinite. Accomplishments like Marie Curie’s work in physics or Rosa Parks’ bravery that ignited the civil rights movement are even more noteworthy when considering the obstacles they had to overcome. It’s heartening to see accomplished women in positions of power. Today the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel is serving her fourth term. The CEOs of companies like General Motors and Fidelity Investments are women, as are Vice President Harris and Speaker of the House Pelosi. Those leaders would certainly not be where they are today without the accomplishments of countless women before them. It reminds us of Issac Newton’s famous quote, “I have seen further by standing on the shoulders of giants.” As we reflect during this year’s Women’s History Month, we can’t help but wonder on whose shoulders our daughters and granddaughters will be standing. It Takes A Village By Beverly Perkins

ust a couple of years ago, two Jewish congregations, The Century Pines Jewish Center and Village Reform Congregation, in Century Village Pembroke Pines merged to become one…one house of study, one place of worship, one source for educational programs, one sanctuary for Holocaust survivors, and one cultural, social, and recreational meeting place. Additionally, The Pembroke Pines Jewish Center (PPJC) also had one mission in mind, and this is to provide a spiritual home for Jews in Century Village and West Broward. The ambitious religious organization wants to honor and preserve the egalitarian Judaism of Conservative and Reform traditions in their merged community of Ashkenazi and Sephardic members. However, the PPJC is now reaching beyond the gates to obtain new members and

sustain what they were proud to create. The ongoing pandemic has forced them to shut their doors, but this “little shul that could” has not closed their beliefs or their hearts. Active congregants have been attending online meetings for both the Sisterhood and Men’s Clubs as well as outdoor events in the parking lot. Drivethru meals have been offered several times a month, live streaming Shabbat services have been available on Friday nights and Saturday mornings, and ongoing communication is active on their social media page and website. “As everyone is well aware, the numbers are once again beginning to go up which means that we don’t know when we will be able to reopen. Traffic box wraps make the city of pembroke pines

he City of Pembroke Pines’ latest Public Art Project -- Traffic Box Wraps is catching the eyes of residents and visitors. The City’s Art and Culture Advisory Board created the theme “What Makes Pembroke Pines a ‘Happy City’” after the city was named one of the Happiest Cities in South Florida in 2019 and 2020. by online personal finance website WalletHub. Once the theme was chosen, the creative artwork began and the 14 boxes are now ready for all to enjoy. The City commissioned Artist John Potter, an Illustrator and Graphic Designer, to create designs for traffic boxes wrapped at 10 locations. For six of the designs, the artist

incorporated a QR code which creates an interactive experience. Residents can walk over to the various boxes, download the “Eyejack” app from the App Store (iPhone or Android), hover their phone camera over the designs, and watch the images come to life. “We are very excited not only about the beautiful and creative designs from John, but having some of them come to life in this truly unique approach is amazing,” said Holly Bonkowski, Assistant Director of Cultural Arts. “It’s a fun way for our community to engage with this public art.” The Art and Culture Advisory Board has been tasked with bringing ideas and themes for the next set of traffic box wraps.

Growing Pains In Children Or Merely Flat Feet? By Dr. John Goodner

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.

Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knockkneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be experienced. This

Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to

In reality, my practice involves many different types of family related issues. Here are the many types of issues that my office handles: 1. Dissolution of Marriage. This includes simple, complex, and collaborative cases. 2. Paternity Cases. A Paternity Case is necessary to establish a Father’s rights when a child is born out of wedlock. Once established, a Parenting Plan must be established. This also includes simple, complex, and collaborative cases. 3. Modifications. • Financial: Florida law allows a modification ( either an increase or a decrease of either child support or alimony) if the moving party can prove that there has been an involuntary, substantial change of circumstance in the income of either party. • Child Related: Florida law allows a modification of a Parenting Plan (time-sharing, etc.) if the moving party can prove that there has been an involuntary, substantial change of circumstance and a modification is in the minor child’s best interests. This primarily deals with time-sharing and Shared Parental Responsibility issues.

4. Contempt/Enforcement :

• Contempt: If one of the parties willfully fails to pay either court-ordered child support or alimony obligations, the Court can find that party in Contempt. To be a willful failure it must be proven that the party ordered to pay had the ability to pay but chose not to. Generally, a purge is set ( a percentage of the amount of money owed) and if not paid, incarceration is possible. If a parent willfully fails to follow the Parties Parenting Plan and interferes with a parent/child relationship ( time-sharing/decision making, etc.), a finding of Contempt can be sought. • Enforcement: Matters not subject to contempt, but still ordered by the Court, may be subject to Enforcement. Typically, this deals with Parenting Plan issues, such as late pick-ups or drop-offs or certain financial issues such as Equitable distribution of assets.

5. Relocation: Under Florida Law, a parent cannot relocate a minor child beyond 50 miles from their residence without either the written permission of the other parent or a Court Order. This is, in essence, a modification since the Parenting Plan would have to be modified if relocation were to take place. 6. Injunction: For Protection against Domestic Violence: This is commonly referred to as a Restraining Order. This can be obtained on behalf of the moving party (Husband or Wife/ Mother or Father) or on behalf of a minor child. If the court believes that there is a reasonable fear of domestic violence a temporary ex parte (without notice to the other side), an Injunction will be issued, and a hearing scheduled within 15 days. My office handles either the Petitioner (party who obtained the Injunction) or the Respondent (person who had the Injunction issued against/him her). Smoke alarms have become such a common feature in our homes that it is easy to take them for granted and forget about them. Let’s keep our smoke alarms working properly and stay safe. ear Residents, While the Covid-19 pandemic continues to weigh heavily, there are glimmers of hope lightening the load. As of mid-January, state officials and healthcare workers are ramping up vaccine distribution, delivering over 107,000 vaccines to Florida residents, 48,000 of which directed towards Broward County alone. Yet, there is still more we must do. The Broward Delegation and I delivered a joint statement to Governor DeSantis urging him to prioritize teachers and school employees to receive the vaccine so they can safely return to school. I am also working with the State Emergency Response Team to direct more vaccines to residents ages 65 years and older as we successfully did in Century Village Pembroke Pines. While I understand that procuring a vaccine appointment has been frustrating for many, I encourage you to be patient. A new pre-registration system has been designed to hold your spot in line for a vaccine, so you can bypass the tedious registration process. You will receive a call back once appointments are available. In tandem with coordinating vaccine distributions, I am preparing for the 2021 Legislative Session beginning in early March. One of my priorities include designing legislation to address the flooding issues in west Broward County. Last November, Tropical Storm Eta crisscrossed over Broward County leaving a deluge of rain that overwhelmed our flood management infrastructure. To solve the problem, I met with representatives from the South Broward Drainage District (SBDD) and listened to their needs. In response, I filed a $150,000 appropriation to purchase 2 high capacity mobile stormwater pumps and am drafting legislation to better position our State for the fiscal impact of inland and coastal flooding. I have also filed an individual appropriation to deal with a seepage and flooding issues in west Pembroke Pines. This is an extremely tight budget year with a shortfall of $2.7 billion and I am hoping there will be funds to address these critical needs. I am also proposing a study to gather data to predict the expenditures of federal, state, regional, and local governments to guard against inland and coastal flooding from heavy rains and sea-level rise. It is past time we simply recognize flooding. Instead, we must plan policy to address what is likely to be one of the largest infrastructure expenditures in our State. As always, I am here for you. roward County Public Schools (BCPS) observed the three-year commemoration of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School by holding a Day of Service and Love at all of the schools in the system. Over the course of the week leading up to Sunday, February 14, district schools conducted projects and activities that encourage service to others and raise awareness about important and meaningful causes. Flanagan City High Schoo & Miramar High Schooll students & faculty enthusiastically pitched in to help bring our community together.

Breaking Barriers

he Miramar Police Department’s Restorative Justice/ Peace Circle Project, whose motto is “Breaking Barriers,” focuses on the growing tension between teenage youth and law enforcement in Broward County and across the country. The Urban League of Broward County brought forth the concern teens had about their day to day encounters with police that shaped their attitudes and behaviors towards law enforcement. With the assistance from this organization, Miramar Police Chief Dexter Williams invited the Restorative Justice Project

With Our Youth to our community, providing a neutral atmosphere where both law enforcement and youth can have productive conversations in an effort to strengthen community relations. Restorative Justice Circles were created to have open and honest dialogue between the police and teens. These events have taken place in community-based locations, where several Broward County police agencies are invited to partake in the conversation alongside Miramar officers. Participants gather in a circle and discuss numerous topics. The teens are given the opportunity to

express their feelings about law enforcement and to discuss any negative encounters they may have experienced. In turn, officers address the youth and provide explanations for officers’ actions and in some cases apologize to the youth for their experience. Moreover, officers use the circle to teach strategies on how to deal with law enforcement in a productive and respectful manner. The Miramar Police Department was the first law enforcement agency to host a Restorative Justice Project in South Florida. The project serves approximately 60 to

100 teens throughout the community. Parents and community members are invited and encouraged to participate in the circles as well. Withstanding the effects of COVID-19, on January 18, 2021, Miramar PD hosted its 3rd annual “Breaking Barriers” event virtually, focusing on the importance of respect, responsibility, relationship building, repairing and strengthening relations between law enforcement and the community. We connected with youth from several nonprofit organizations, including Broward County’s Urban League, the State Attorney’s diversion program, PACE program for girls, and Henderson Health Care students. Via Zoom, youth were placed in virtual rooms with one law enforcement officer from Miramar, Fort Lauderdale, and Plantation PD and one Peace Circle facilitator. It was an excellent opportunity to have productive dialogues and exchange ideas on how to improve juvenile youth and officers’ daily interactions. Seventy participants logged into the virtual event. Each teen was also rewarded with a $25 gift card, community service hours, and an Urban League certificate. Chief Williams, who served as the keynote speaker, was also honored by the Urban League for his outstanding service to the community. “Breaking Barriers” is just one of several programs Miramar PD has brought forth, to better serve our community.
