for the Present and the Future

N ovember is a time when many of us take a moment to give thanks. But understanding how good we have it requires a bit of perspec tive. Social media algorithms combined with the current political environment can make our present-day problems seem insurmountable. The reality is we are living such fantastic lives that our great-grandparents wouldn’t be able to i

It is easy to be pessimistic. There is another bloody war in Europe, we are still feeling the after-effects of the worst pandemic since the Spanish Flu, Global Warming continues to pose a long-term threat, and price inflation has returned to the economy. These challenges may be with us for some time, but they will be overcome. We have already come so far, so fast.

100 years ago, in 1922, the life expectancy at birth was about 60 years; today it is 79. Antibiotics did not exist. There was about one vehicle on the road per 100 people. Two in three homes lacked electricity; six out of seven homes did not have a bathtub. A typical person completed about eight years of school; segregation was rampant across the southern U.S., and the most common job in America was a farm worker. And, this was during the “Roaring Twenties,” a period of relative excess. Things we take for granted today like air conditioning, the internet, air travel, television, and higher education simply didn’t exist.

Taking stock of all we have today makes us incredibly thankful. We live in comfort, in a beautiful community carved out of a swamp. Our children are relatively safe to pursue their passions. There are numerous educational opportunities for almost everyone. Each of us carries access to all the world’s knowledge in our pocket. Our community is an incredible melt ing pot of cultures. The necessities of life are almost universally provided for.

We are thankful for all we have.

Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Thanksgiving Day

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertil ity of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.”

Harvest Drive Celebrates 30 Years of Children Helping Children by Feeding Families

Local schools are partnering with Harvest Drive, Inc. to make sure local families don’t go hungry for Thanksgiving. The organization, in part nership with more than 200 schools, will provide a week’s worth of groceries plus a gift card or perishable items to ensure 2,400 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

This is nothing new for Renee Herman who founded this grass roots non-profit organization 30 years ago on the principle of teaching children the importance of compassion and empathy for others. What began as an annual Thanksgiving Drive blossomed into a year-round volun teer-driven effort approximately 20 years ago.

Entering its 30th year, Harvest Drive continues its tradition by once again helping families to have a bountiful Thanksgiving feast and enough groceries for the holiday week.

Students at participating schools have been collecting non-perishable items, household goods, and grocery gift cards. Collections began mid-October and will conclude in early November. The items will be consolidated at 13 school-based distri bution sites to ensure that recipient families receive 6-10 bags of groceries in time for Thanksgiving.

The mission of Harvest Drive, Inc. is to promote the concept of philanthropy to local

students by providing the opportunity for them to give back directly to their commu nity in a basic and meaningful way. Students working in conjunction with community partners provide food and other neces sities including gently used clothing and household items to Broward County schools’ families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year. The Harvest Drive strives to educate students on the issue of hunger in our community and empower them to take leadership roles in lessening hunger’s devastating impact.

Members of the local community are encouraged to volunteer or donate canned goods and non-perishable items. Donations can be dropped off at Harvest Drive’s

flagship school, Western High School, on Wednesday, November 16 from 3:00 pm9:00 pm.

Food will be distributed at a number of locations across Broward County. Local distributions sites include:

Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Art Announces 2022/23 Season Schedule

The Performing Arts (PPTOPA) was founded in 1993 to provide low-cost, high-quality live theatre. The theater group routinely features local professional and non-professional actors in its productions. The coming season will include three Broadway-style productions including “Sweeny Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” playing now, “Pippin” this spring, and a summer performance of “The Wiz.”

Pippin

The spring show will be “Pippin.” While Stephen Schwartz’s PIPPIN originally opened on Broadway in October 1972 and is considered to be a ‘70s musical, it was actually originally written for the Scotch ‘n’ Soda Club by Schwartz while at Carnegie Mellon University in 1967. 1967 was the Summer of Love, Flower Power was at its peak and the War was raging in Vietnam. PPTOPA’s production will follow the 2013 Broadway revival libretto but will be intentionally stripped back and reimagined in its concept, allowing the audience to really find the heart of the piece and will be set in a storytelling circle reflecting back the spirit of the ‘60s/’70s in a fun, fresh and theatrical way.

PPTOPA

Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd has become a bloody, world wide success since being awarded eight Tony’s, (including Best Musical), for its Broadway premiere. Stephen Sondheim’s and Hugh Wheeler’s (A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures) tasty, thrilling, theatrical treat has simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences across the world.

An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to nineteenth-century London, seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which, he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up... and the carnage has only just begun!

PPTOPA is committed to providing the com munity with theatrical productions that inspire, entertain and celebrate the artistic process while incorporating diversity, cultural awareness and outreach through high-quality live theater and education that is available to everyone.

The theater company will present Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The show follows a wrongfully imprisoned barber seeking to right the wrongs committed against him. He is Johanna’s father, singularly focused on taking bloody revenge.

PPTOPA is always looking for enthusiastic theatre lovers to get involved in their productions! Whether your interest is onstage, backstage, front of house, or in some other capacity behind the scenes, if you love theater, it is a great way to get involved.

▸ Performances are held at the Susan B. Katz Theatre, 17195 Sheridan Street, in the River of Grass Artspark. For information, to order tick ets or to volunteer, call 954-437-4884, visit www.pptopa.com or send an email to info@ pptopa.org.

▸ Scan the QR Code for tickets to Sweeney Todd and informa tion about auditions for future shows.

Miramar High Aviation Magnet Program Takes Students to the Sky

Depending on a specific area of interest, academic courses are available at all levels of instruction, with students receiving core aviation courses that include topics such as flight theory, navigation, aerodynamics, history of flight, and meteorology.

Students interested in aviation can take to the skies at Miramar High School. The School partners with Broward College to offer students a dual enrollment Aviation Magnet Program.

The Aviation Science Program is designed to prepare students interested in aviation for a variety of post-secondary programs leading to careers in the industry, including commercial pilot, FAA-certified mechanic, aviation administration, and more. As a partner Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, this program track allows students to complete 24 dual enrollment college, post-secondary technical programs, or military careers.

The Miramar High School program has forged partnerships with several local aviation companies, including Miramar-based Spirit Airlines. There are already at least two Spirit Captains who have graduated from the Magnet Program.

To participate in the program, students are required to have a minimum 2.5 GPA and Level 3 or higher on the Math EOC and FSA ELA. The program's highlight is training using the flight simulator in the state-of-the-art classroom. Students also have the opportunity to study and operate drones.

LOCAL STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS

Four local students have been named Semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. Just 117 students who attend public or private schools in Broward County achieved this honor.

“This is an incredible honor for every student, and we are so proud of each of them for being recognized for their outstanding scores and academic achievements,” said education advocate Sandra Dubose.

The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.6 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/NMSQT in their respective states.

Local semifinalists included:

▸ Rebecca Lim, Pembroke Pines Charter High School

▸ Ryan Garcia, West Broward High School

▸ Nikash Jakkidi, West Broward High School

▸ Taylor Pierson, West Broward High School

7,250 of the Semifinalists go on to win scholarships. The winners are selected on a state-by-state basis and are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. NMSC winners receive a $2,500 scholarship and the honor of being a Nation Merit Scholar.

In order to become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recom mended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT

scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Semifinalists must also submit a detailed scholarship application which includes information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, as well as honors and awards received.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2023. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 950 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 180 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 160 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 3,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join nearly 368,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Fairway

One hundred media centers are being renovated at schools throughout Broward County as part of the SMART Bond Program, which focuses on improvements in the areas of Safety, Music and art, Athletics, Renovation, and Technology.

Fairway Elementary School’s media center was completely remodeled with eye-catching furniture and modern tech nology. “The new media center is more of a modern instructional-technology-led space. More student-centered because of the computers and the different seating areas,” said Katherine Good, Principal at the school.

Media centers promote literature, exploration, community, and collaboration among students. The upgraded centers incorporate modern learning styles and provide resources that support the school’s curriculum to help students improve their literacy skills at their own pace. Students are provided with a variety of new books that pique their interest, encouraging a lifelong

love of reading. Many of the renovated media centers also have more seating, increasing capacity and allowing for more students to collaborate in the center.

Fairway Elementary was allocated $7,891,900 of the SMART Bond Program budget to improve its media center, as well as its roofing, walkways, electrical systems, fire alarm systems, HVAC systems, and to enhance safety and security. In the city of Miramar, students at Miramar High School will also get to enhance their learning in a renovated media center.

The SMART Bond Program has invested approximately $1.4 billion in improving the quality of the BCPS educational experience, making a positive impact on the lives of students and staff, and giving Broward County communities something to be proud of through renovation.

To highlight the impact of the media cen ter renovations at Broward County Public Schools, the “What SMART Means to Me” campaign launched a new initiative titled

Sparking the Joy of Reading. Follow along with the progress of media center improve ments across BCPS, by visiting the SMART Futures website (www.bcpssmartfutures. com). The SMART Futures website serves as an accessible, easy-to-use, comprehensive place for school communities and key stakeholders to find information about all SMART projects and the latest happenings in the Program.

Honor Flight South Florida Celebrates Milestone 25th Flight

Honor Flight South Florida recently celebrated its 25th flight transporting 72 veterans on an all-inclusive trip to Washington, D.C.. They visited the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, and the US Marine Corps War Memorial.

The volunteer-led organization was also honored with a proclamation by Broward County Mayor Michael Udine for the hub’s dedication to serving veterans in South Florida, commemorating the organization’s milestone 25th mission to the nation’s capital. Veterans on the flight were welcomed home at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport with a celebratory homecoming ceremony.

“Each of our missions have been special in their own way and we are always so honored to be able to thank the veterans that join us on each of our flights, so to reach this milestone of 25 missions means a lot to us as an organization and everyone who has been a part of this

journey with us,” said Honor Flight chairman Mike Miskew. “Being able to organize a truly memorable day for our veterans is what makes these missions so important.”

Founded in 2011, Honor Flight South Florida is an independent hub of the national Honor Flight network that serves veterans in Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The local South Florida Hub organizes honor flights from Fort Lauderdale and Miami airports four to five times a year, also hosting additional volunteer-driven events throughout the year.

Honoring the late Rick Asper, founder and chairman of Honor Flight South Florida, the annual golf tournament is one of the hub’s key fundraisers and social events benefiting the organization’s programming for the following year.

The Rick Asper Memorial Golf Tournament, slated for November 4, 2022, at the Davie Golf and Country Club, is now accepting participants and sponsors. Veterans, active-duty military, and first responders receive a special discount for single-player registration.

EXERTIONAL COMPARTMENT SYNDROME IN THE ATHLETE

A Commonly Missed Diagnosis

When shin splints are not s hin splints.

There many causes of leg pain in athletes. All too often, they are lumped together under the term shin splints which most sports medicine physicians do not consider a true diagnosis. Stress fractures, tendinitis, medial tibial stress syndrome are all examples of maladies referred to as shin splints. However, one commonly missed diagnosis often confused with shin splints is exertional compartment syndrome (ECS). Exertional compartment syndrome (ECS), also known as exertional induced compartment syndrome or chronic compartment syndrome is a unique condition where an athlete experi ences muscle pain in the legs with weakness of the ankle as a result of increased muscle pressure in one or all four compartments of the leg. Patients with this condition will typically note the onset of symptoms at a fixed point ranging from 5-30 minutes into an activity, at a specific level of intensity, with symptoms usually occurring in both legs. The most characteristic feature of (ECS) is that it is exercise induced and never present at rest. The vast majority of patients with ECS are runners who range from the occasional jogger to the elite Olympic level runner. It is not unusual to see unconditioned athletes develop these symptoms after beginning an exercise program. Occasionally the prob lem is recognized in high-level cyclists as well.

Why does this happen?

There are generally 4 compartments in the leg, each is surrounded by tight tissue resembling a thick saran wrap which holds the compartment in place and separates it from the adjacent compartments. Patients with ECS will complain of cramping, burning, tightness and weakness of the ankle with exercise. Some will also develop numbness in the foot and describe a foot slap due to ankle weakness during running. This may cause the runner to trip as a result of the foot not being able to clear the ground just before landing. Pain will force the athlete to stop at which time symptoms completely resolve after resting a few minutes. The symptoms are reproducible with exertion and should be recreated in the office setting with an exercise challenge such as running on a treadmill or stair climbing. Specific muscle

and sensory testing after exertion will aid in confirming the diagnosis and specifying the compartment affected. During strenuous activity blood flow increases to the leg causing the volume and weight of the muscle to increase by about 20%. As a result, the muscle fibers attempt to swell but are restricted by the tight surrounding fascia. Immediately after activity the leg may feel tense or tender with deep message or passive stretch. Runners may find that a bubble or several bubbles are visible in front of the leg which we refer to as fascial hernias. These are areas where the fascia may have become weak allowing the muscle to herniate through due to the excessive internal leg pressure. The physical exam during rest is otherwise generally unremarkable. X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, vascular studies and other imaging exams are used to rule out other diagnosis but are not helpful, as they are always normal in ECS. To confirm the diagnosis the sports physician will need to measure the pressure in each com partment of the leg with a special instrument much like a tire gauge. In normal patients, the pressure difference between rest and activity is small, while those with ECS will have a dramatic increase in pressure readings after activity.

ECS is not an emergency

Exercised-induced compartment syndrome is not to be confused with acute compartment syndrome which is considered a surgical emer gency. Typically, acute compartment syndrome is a result of a traumatic injury causing a similar increase in compartment pressures due to hemorrhaging. In this situation, the pressure cannot be controlled easily and the delay in treatment may cause permanent muscle and nerve damage. In contrast, people with exer cise-induced compartment syndrome will find that the pressure is relieved completely with rest. ECS is generally not considered an emergency.

What is the treatment?

A period of rest and avoiding high-intensity activities can be tried. Often more experienced athletes will recognize the level of intensity provoking symptoms and attempt to exercise just below that threshold. Muscle retraining by running more efficiently may also improve symptoms.

However, if the diagnosis of ECS is clear and the symptoms persist despite exhausting conservative treatment, surgery may be required if the athlete intends to continue the sport. The surgery involves releasing or cutting the tight fascia using a technique called fasciotomy. This allows the muscle to expand during exercise. Complication rates are rare when done by an experienced surgeon and may include bleed ing, wound breakdown, and numbness. Also, symptoms can redevelop several years after a fasciotomy in a small percentage of patients as a result of the fascia reforming. The results of the procedure however are generally very gratifying and has allowed many athletes to remain active in their sport.

Greetings From Your Chamber President!

Inflation is being felt across the board, from Fortune 500 companies to entrepreneurs just starting their new ventures.

However, an important difference between small and large companies are their reserves. The average small business runs with less than 30 days of operating expenses in the bank. This means that they are hurting harder from increases in costs, supply chain issues impacting their inventory, and the chal lenge of employee shortages.

But while over 3 in every 4 businesses are seeing a rise in their costs, only half have raised their prices. Many businesses are holding out as long as they can, but you may see some changes going into the holiday season, such as limited hours to help with staff shortages or reduc tions in available products and services.

Please remember that our local businesses need our support and our patience. These are our neighbors and are a vital part of the health of our community.

This may seem like a bleak picture, but we have had some wonderful success stories over the past year as well. There are new businesses growing. People are starting their own enterprises even through these challenging times. We eagerly celebrate each ribbon cutting as a sign of the prosperity that lies ahead, and you are always invited to join us at these grand opening celebrations.

Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. For more informa tion and our event calendar, visit miramarpembrokepines.org.

MIRAMAR UPDATE

Fall is one of my favorite time of year. Football season is in full swing and we are finally getting a break from the summer heat. Personally, one of my favorite things to do in the fall is to present the Annual State of the City. I began presenting the State of the City in 2015, the year I was elected Mayor of the great City of Miramar. This has always been an opportunity for our residents and businesses to get a full understanding of how your elected officials and city staff work on your behalf. This includes highlighting the successes of Miramar over the past fiscal year, the economic development progress of our economy and the investments made in our city to enhance and sustain a high quality of life for our residents. This year's State of the City address will be on Thursday, November 3rd, 6:30 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center. I am excited to present how far we’ve come, from 2015 to now. The paths we’ve taken and all the exciting avenues we are about to take. I hope to see you there.

The Mayor’s Chess Challenge takes place on November 12th, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Sunset Lakes Community Center, 2801 SW 186th Ave, Miramar, FL 33029. This is such a wonderful program that was initiated by City of Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan that we have partici pated in for a number of years. It’s a wonderful opportunity to test your ability against players of all skill sets. This is open to everyone, of any age, of any skill set. Come partic ipate, bring your children, there will be professionals there to guide you, hope you can make it.

I am delighted to announce that the Aviation Expo is back for our 5th Year! From check-in to landing, this event aims at expanding the minds of our youth to the ever-growing career field of aviation by promoting involvement in S.T.E.M. It is my pleasure to announce that Captain Barrington Irving, his staff and Flying Classroom will be part of this year’s Expo along with our wonderful part ners from Fort Lauderdale International Airport, the Coast Guard, Broward County Schools and their Robotics program. It’s all taking place on Friday, December 2nd for Schools only, and Saturday, December 3rd, Community Day which is open to the public. Join us at the Amphitheater at Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway, Miramar 33027.

As we are near the end of the year, Angela and I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving! We give thanks for the many successes this great city has achieved and the opportunities we have been given to get better. We also give thanks for our nation and the men and women who have served our Armed Forces so we can enjoy our many liberties.
