HISTORY
The Olympia Union Gospel Mission (OUGM) began its work with the homeless and needy in 1995 through a street ministry outreach. Sandwiches and hot drinks were offered in an atmosphere of love and acceptance. Our goal was, and still is, to share God’s love in practical ways.
MISSION
The OUGM exists as an Evangelical Christian Rescue Mission, serving Thurston County, to share the good news of life in Jesus Christ by meeting the physical, mental and spiritual needs of individuals in crisis.
The Mission is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization and does not receive government funding, but relies solely on the generous support of individuals, churches, businesses and private foundations to maintain services. All donations are tax-deductible.
Is your portfolio a hit, too?

OLYMPIA JAZZ SENATORS
Olympia Jazz Senators (OJS), founded by Norm Wallen in the fall of 2005, has become the premiere big band in Thurston County. OJS members hail from Florida to Alaska bringing a wealth of experience and expertise. Members include public school band directors, active and retired, as well as members of our Armed Forces, including the United States Army, Navy and Air Force Bands.
This swinging ensemble performs classics of Glenn Miller, Buddy Rich, Count Basie, to the contemporary sounds of today. Drawn from a vast custom library, the Olympia Jazz Senators perform new compositions and arrangements by one of the Senators. No matter what the genre, the Olympia Jazz Senators present every tune with their own unique twist.
Saxophone: Scott Dunkin (alto 1), Ninee Wolff (alto 2), Aaron Wolff (tenor 1), Tim Owen (tenor 2), Derek Nelson (bari)
Trombone: Peter Plumbley (1), Peter Klinzman (2), Daniel Ayotte (3), Rich Pasko (4)
Trumpet: Mario Pesacreta (lead), Eric Lundquist (2), Steve Ross (3), Joel Heridea (4)
Rhythm Section: Dr. Brian Dean (piano), Brian Pelky (guitar), Steven Bentley (drums), Rick Jarvela (bass)
MUSIC DIRECTOR ~ Ben McDonald
“Music teaches you so much about life and I want my students to be as inspired by the joy of music, as I have been.” An instrumental music teacher for over 25 years, Ben McDonald is passionate about performing and believes it’s performance that inspires his best teaching. McDonald currently teaches band at Bush Middle School. He has performed with the Oregon Symphony as well as the Oregon Opera and Ballet. In 2013 he recorded with Grammy award winning artist “City of Roses” song writer Esperanza Spalding. McDonald also lends his talents to the Gospel Outreach Church as the Brass Choir Director, and he is one of the founding members of the Olympia Jazz Senators.
McDonald earned a degree in music from the University of Kentucky, Lexington, where he studied two years with Vincent Di Martino and later, he studied eight years with William ‘Bill’ Fiedler at the Rutgers Mason Gross School of Arts in Newark. He credits his ability to switch from classical to jazz and across other genres to his time spent with these legendary greats who played with everyone from Aretha Franklin to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Count Basie Orchestra with equal ease. He praises Fielder as holding a pivotal role in his life as a “Master Teacher.”
SKIP STEFFEN, Executive Director
Trained as a biochemist, Skip Steffen was involved in Laboratory Medicine at Providence St. Peter Hospital from 1970 to 2000.
In 1995 Skip became a Board member of the Olympia Union Gospel Mission. He held the position until 2005 when he became Executive Director after retiring from St. Peter Hospital.
The first Dental Benefit show was in 2003 when Skip was still on the Board and he was able to “just show up” and enjoy the Breath of Aire Choir performance. In 2004 Skip became part of the planning team and over the years has become more and more involved in the annual production.
In 2011 Skip played the part of the monster in “Putting on the Ritz,” and cavorting around the stage on stilts taught him that it was much safer to be behind the scenes than on stage as part of the cast.
Providing our low income, un- or under-insured citizens in the greater Olympia community access to dental and other health care services has always been seen by Skip and the other Board members as an important role for the Mission. Over the years, both the types of performances in the show and the dental clinic services have undergone change, but both play an important role in the lives of Olympia area citizens.
Skip has found the role of producer to be both very enjoyable and challenging. He wishes to express his sincere appreciation to the Olympia Jazz Senators and all the performers for their support and willingness to pull together to create yet again another great evening of entertainment for the Olympia audience.
