alk into a dive bar and find the perfect guy. How often does that work out? Everyone warns you not to meet men at bars. But I did and it’s everything you wouldn’t expect. He lives in a bungalow by the beach with a garden. He serves me breakfast on the front porch just after the sun rises––homecooked, topped with tomatoes and herbs he picked fresh from his own crop. He has a good job as a senior manager in finance at a startup based on the West Coast but has the luxury of working from home on the opposite coast where I live. He’s welltraveled. He’s vegetarian. He practices yoga and meditates daily. And, he’s tall and handsome. He’s like a well-balanced meal, and that’s not easy to find unexpectedly in a dank, dark room full of strangers, but it wasn’t luck that found us together at Duck and Dive. Blow out your birthday candles after your friends sing to you and make your wish. How often do you actually get what you

wish for? How often do you even wish? One time one day every 365 days? Wishing doesn’t work. I’ve done enough of it to understand that simply wanting won’t get you very far. So how did I find my perfect person? I was working hard on two new businesses I birthed less than three years ago, and I kept saying to my friends I needed a money manager. I knew I needed a guy in financials so bad I wrote him on a to-do list. And I cried to my mother at least once a month telling her how as an entrepreneur I had everything, I could build it all, except this one thing––a really big thing. Love. But the thing about love is finding it is circumstantial. You can’t grow it. You can’t make it. You can’t buy it. You have to be in the right place at the right time and your heart has to be open, willing and ready, as does his or hers. Without apps on our phones, the likelihood of finding a mate naturally is highly unlikely. That is, unless you put your iPhone away and take out a pen and paper.

TIPS for MEETING YOUR MATE •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

It happens like this: create a sacred space, gather yourself and anything that might connect you to your higher self (candles, sage, flowers from the garden, photos of your grandmother, crystals, malas, mandalas, lucky pennies, trinkets, whatever does it for you, which could very well be nothing at all), sit on the floor, close your eyes and picture everything as you wish it to be. Don’t cut yourself short. Imagine every detail. Write it all down. You can write it in a list. You can write it as a short story. Just write what comes to mind–– anything and everything you want in a mate. It sounds like voodoo. It seems too good to be true, but I’m telling you it works. This isn’t the first time pen and paper have paid off. People ask me how I did it. They come to me with their brows furrowed, at grocery stores, via email, on Instagram, by phone and say: how did you find this guy? And I look them in the eyes and tell them to stop looking, stop settling. Sit down. Find stillness. Look deep inside. Figure out what you want and write it out, knowing, fully believing that what you write will come true.
