hopping local is something we should all be doing more of in normal circumstances, but during the current COVID-19 pandemic, it has become almost imperative, part of our duty towards our local community. This is especially true for the fashion scene; which due to the elective nature of buying clothes has been hit harder than other industries, causing joblessness and economic hardship across the supply chain. For local designers and brands, it has been even harder as larger brands and department stores have capitalized on a decade long culture of discount only shopping, which smaller brands can’t afford. Sixty percent of people in the United States say they will be more careful with how they spend their money, according to the latest McKinsey report “The State of Fashion 2020: The Coronavirus update.” So now that brick and mortar stores are much harder to shop while independent brands who are mostly based online are getting easier, and that we have more time on hand, we should seize this opportunity to explore and find new ways to shop in the future.
