Creating Futures Scholarship Dinner

T

he Market Basket at Countryside Village was the scene for the 4th Annual Nebraska Humane Society Friends Forever “Purses 4 Paws.” The event, which took place in November, welcomed 150 guests who spent time enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres as they bid on over 300 new and gently used purses that helped to reach the event’s goal. Honorary Chair was Cindy Irvine, and co-chairs for the event were Judy Thesing and Wendi Law. President of the Friends Forever Board is Karin Nilsson. W

ith an attendance topping 500, Omaha Christian Academy’s 2nd Annual Creating Futures Scholarship Dinner was held in November at Embassy Suites La Vista. Serving as the event’s Honorary Dinner Chairs were Nebraska football legend Jerry Tagge and his wife Betty. Miss America 2011, Teresa Scanlan, impressed as Master of Ceremonies, and former Arkansas governor and FOX News analyst Mike Huckabee captivated as the dinner’s keynote speaker. The Academy presented Salem Baptist Church with the school’s Inspiration Award for Community Service. Bill and Berniece Grewcock presented the crowd with a $60,000 match challenge, resulting in over $120,000 raised for need-based scholarships for students.

Milagro Dinner

maha Creative Institute held its 2011 Patron Party at the home of Magda Peck and Jim Anderson in November. Featured during the night’s event were artist Paula Wallace talking about her approach to painting, slam poet Matt Mason performing his poetry, and musician Mark Gutierrez playing ukulele. All three teach “Come Create It” workshops on behalf of Omaha Creative Institute. Notable attendees included Deb & Mayor Jim Suttle, Connie & Rick Spellman, Ayman El-Mohandes, and Bud & Rebecca Shaw. Sixty people attended and over $8,000 was raised to support the organization’s mission as a cultural hub, providing leadership, unity, and educational opportunities for Omaha’s creative community. www.ReadOnlineNow.com

neWorld Community Health Centers, Inc. held its annual fundraising Milagro Dinner in November at the Historic Livestock Exchange Building. The evening began with a social hour and silent auction followed by dinner and keynote speaker Dr. Joann Schaefer. Each year the Milagro Dinner recognizes the significance of contributions made by volunteers and partnering organizations. This year’s award recipients included: Bergan Mercy Medical Center, Building Bright Futures, Robert Fitzgibbons, M.D., Midwest GYN Oncology, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center – Department of Family Medicine. Over 350 people attended and together raised $72,500 for OneWorld’s mission. january/february  •  2012
