As a photographer who specializes in portraits of children and families, Carly

Urbach is accustomed to adapting quickly to a situation, whether it’s soothing a cranky newborn (or reassuring the baby’s nervous firsttime parents), engaging distracted toddlers, or putting a self-conscious high-school senior at ease. “You adjust accordingly,” she said. “All these tricks I’ve learned—especially being a parent—help.”

Urbach said she simply applied that same ingenuity and flexibility to her photography business in 2020 and 2021 to keep her subjects, some just days old, healthy: she spaced out appointments to avoid families congregating in a waiting area, took advantage of pleasant weather for outdoor shoots and stepped up her prop and studio cleaning practices from thorough to meticulous. Even with the adjustments, Urbach was able to continue to customize each photo session, making families comfortable and creating beautiful portraits that showcase subjects’ unique personalities.

After all, Urbach pointed out, children grow quickly and professional portraits are still a wonderful way to capture those precious stages, unique personalities and important milestones.
