With a planned launch date of April 22, 2023, our Academy will commence with a ½ day session highlighting characteristics of leadership and providing insight into what leadership looks like across various community sectors. Several of our region’s top business, government and civic professionals have agreed to participate as facilitators in our program and share their insight about leadership. Some of the key elements of the program include exploring the art of leadership, introducing participants to local leaders, providing awareness of critical economic drivers in the City of Oceanside, and offering sessions on specific community sectors. Our program will launch with a half day leadership workshop and follow-up sessions will occur over the following seven weeks with topics including Entrepreneurship, Health Care, Tourism/Hospitality, Military, Municipal Government, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and Non-Profits. Participants will also be exposed to the critical role that local educational institutions play in supporting each of these sectors. A graduation reception will follow the seven weeks of breakout sessions.

We are currently in the process of finalizing the program details and plan to have marketing materials and program applications available later this year. We expect our first cohort to include 3035 individuals. As the Chamber developed its 5-Year strategic plan last year it was clear that the success of our organization and the City itself will depend on a strong pipeline of future business and civic leaders. Crews will be able to practice forcible entry on a door prop on the first floor. There is a standpipe that can practice pressurizing a building’s fire system and personnel can practice deploying their fire hoses off the stairwell connections. The rooftop of the facility has a hard-top awning and anchored bolts that allow for rappelling down the side of the building.

On July 24th, 2022 the Oceanside Fire Department held a dedication ceremony for the newly finished Everett Stephens Training Tower. The new, state-ofthe-art training tower replaces the previous training tower that was removed in 2016. The new tower is located at the Oceanside Fire Department’s training facility at 110 Jones Road. Thanks to Measure X funding the new facility will prepare future OFD firefighters for generations to come.

Measure X Funding Supports New Fire Training Tower

The training tower was dedicated and named after Everett Stephens. Stephens became one of Oceanside’s first full-time firefighters around 1940, and served on the department for 29 years. He was known as a skilled professional and dedicated his time to serving and protecting the community. Stephens also is recognized as the department’s first Training Officer.

The four-story facility has three interior rooms dedicated to live fire burning. The walls and ceiling are covered in specialized ceramic tiles that withstand smoke and fire conditions and temperatures above 2000 degrees F. Each floor has a distinct layout that allows firefighters to practice search and rescue techniques, hose advancement and fire extinguishment.

The new tower replaces a two-story tower that was constructed from stacked shipping containers.

The Everett Stephens Fire Training Tower will serve not only new OFD recruits and the entire department, but the facility will be available for regional public safety training use as well. The tower was long overdue but thanks to Measure X funding, the project finally became reality. The Oceanside Fire Department would like to thank the citizens for their support. It is anticipated that the Fire Training Center will resume hosting the annual OFD Open House this October. The new tower will loom large over that event!

A: Since 1921, McKenna is a 5th generation, familyowned business. Ahead of his time and known for this innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, John Bernard “JB” McKenna started servicing boilers in Southern California in 1887. Because of a need for local manufacturing in the area, JB McKenna launched McKenna Boiler in 1921, a boiler manufacturing and service shop in Downtown

McKenna Boiler, an Oceanside Chamber of Commerce member, may be new to Oceanside, but they have been in business for more than 100 years. Steam from boilers is used in almost every production line. McKenna Boiler executives Hali Krista and Corbin Smith tell us more.

Q: Tell us about McKenna’s Boiler’s beginning.

MADE IN OCEANSIDE

A: In simple terms, there are multiple types of boilers, you have hot water boilers, low-pressure steam boilers and high-pressure steam boilers. Depending on what your process requires with your company, that type of boiler will be used. You have an ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) code pressure vessel that is filled with water and then you apply a heating source ie. a gas fired burner to that pressure vessel. These boilers have special safety controls added them. The burner runs to heat up the vessel and then you have hot water or steam, like our water heater at home, but on a much larger scale. Once you have the hot water or steam at the desired temperature it is distributed through the plant, hotel, brewery, or whatever process is requiring this steam or hot water.

A: Being a 5th generation family company with over 100 years of experience in our field, an aspect of what my brothers and I do is out of family pride and loyalty, but the real reason why we wake up early every morning and keep coming back to work is for our employees that work tirelessly for our company and our customers. We strive to be the best employer, so that we can attract the best talent out there. If we have the best talent, then we can offer our customers the best quality products and services available on the market. And as we deliver the best products and services, our communities will benefit because our boilers are the backbone of manufacturing in our communities.

Q: How does a boiler work?

Los Angeles. The company quickly gained a reputation for designing quality products that perform under harsh manufacturing conditions and began to grow by word-of-mouth recommendations. In the 1930’s, Guy Smith, a relative of McKenna, joined the business and brought in his own expertise and knowledge, designing and developing the innovative Scotch Marine style units that are still used today.

Q: Why do you think that advanced manufacturing is such a draw for people entering into the workforce or changing careers?

Q: When did McKenna Boiler relocate to Oceanside and why?

Q: Why do you do what you do?

A: At McKenna Boiler, we value passion and integrity which guides our team to deliver quality boiler products and services. We are a forward-thinking manufacturer who offers turnkey solutions for our clientele. Work with the latest and greatest of technologies in our industry to deliver efficient and reliable equipment that handles all steam and hot water needs. Individuals joining the boiler industry enter a profession with tremendous growth potential and unique learning opportunities. There is no trade school available to learn how to be a boilermaker or service technician. It is mostly on-the-job experience. Once this foundational knowledge is set, professionals of the industry are highly valued.

Q: Besides manufacturing the boilers, tell us about how you maintain them.

A: To maintain a boiler, you must have a boiler

A: McKenna expanded into the San Diego territory in 2019. While our Los Angeles facility allowed the company to grow for nearly 100 years, a larger factory became a necessity as we began to increase both the size and quantity of our products along with growing our support staff for current and future company expansion.

Q: Which businesses and organizations in the Oceanside area use McKenna Boiler?

A: Most manufacturing utilizes boilers, from your food processing, textile businesses, hotels, breweries, government buildings and military facilities.

service professional perform routine inspections and quarterly tune ups to ensure that all systems are working properly, up to code and to catch any potential areas of concern that may need to be addressed. These services maximize the efficiency and extend the lifespan of boiler systems. Efficiency equals saving money! So staying up to date on maintenance turns into a short term and long term investment in your equipment!

While the Chamber’s PAC interviewed several candidates for the District 1 race, the group decided not to make and endorsement recommendation to the Chamber Board and instead focus its resources on the District 2 Race.

Oceanside Chamber Endorses Rick Robinson for Oceanside’s District 2 Council Seat

“We are pleased to put our support behind Rick Robinson for the D2 seat”, noted Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton. “Rick is a team player, and he approaches this opportunity with a sense of humility and optimism. He is genuinely focused on the Council seat as a way to continue his service to the City of Oceanside. We are grateful that Rick acknowledges that a businessfriendly climate is essential for the City to remain financially strong and able to provide a high level of service to its Councilmembercitizens.”Christopher Rodriguez, who currently serves as the District 2 representative, is not seeking a 2nd term in the seat.

The Oceanside Chamber’s Advance Oceanside Political Action Committee (AOPAC) recently brought its 2022 City Council endorsement recommendation to the Chamber Board for approval. As a result, the Chamber has endorsed Rick Robinson for the Oceanside City Council District 2 seat. Robinson served as Oceanside’s Fire Chief since 2016 officially retired from the position at the end of July. With a desire to continue actively serving the residents of Oceanside, Robinson decided to make a run at the Council seat in District 2, where he and his wife have lived for many Inyears.itsendorsement recommendation to the Chamber Board, AOPAC noted several strengths that they saw in Robinson during the interview process. The group noted that Robinson has a strong grasp on where Oceanside’s future opportunities lie in the coming years, including continuing the strong progress we have made with the development of hotels, and influx of new businesses. He also demonstrated an understanding of the importance of marketing Oceanside as a destination in order to drive sales tax and transient occupancy tax (TOT) to keep our City in

a strong fiscal position. TOT is the 3rd largest revenue source for Oceanside, generating over $7M annually to the general fund.

Diane screamed and her brave neighbor Jim Prete came running out. He selflessly intervened by pulling the dogs off her. Diane was able to walk to her home and call 911. In the meantime, dogs began attacking Jim, biting his arms and legs and neck.

“Jim is truly a hero”, said Diane. “He heard me screaming and ran outside to help. If he didn’t pull the dogs off me, I would not be alive today. Few people would risk their lives to save a stranger. I am so grateful for his bravery. Words can’t express how much I appreciate what he did to save my life.”

David Parsons is an Oceanside resident who possesses over 27 years of Fire Service experience, including 21 years here in Oceanside. He was awarded “Most Outstanding Recruit” over 20 years ago at Oceanside’s Fire Academy and has steadily risen through the ranks. David most recently served as the Division Chief of Community Risk Reduction, has held the position of Acting Fire Chief and Acting Deputy Fire Chief, and previously served as an Oceanside Fire Captain for 12 years. He has served as an incident commander on significant events and has been involved with a federal incident management team to wildfire deployments across America.

The City of Oceanside thanks Chief Rick Robinson for his six years of service as Oceanside’s Fire Chief and congratulates him on over four decades of dedicated Fire Service in our region.

At its August 10 meeting, the City Council selected Jonathan Borrego to serve as Oceanside’s next City Manager and an employment agreement was approved at its August 24, 2022 Council meeting.

Following the initiation of the Beach Sand Feasibility Study, the City of Oceanside created a brand new position to address coastal erosion concerns and sea level rise and build resiliency against all these environmental stressors. The new Coastal Zone Administrator, Jayme Timberlake, hails from a similar role with the City of Encinitas and brings a myriad of nature-based solutions to our coastal erosion issues. Before working with the City of Encinitas, she worked in environmental analysis, permitting, and habitat restoration for over 15 years. To be sure, she will be incorporating her diverse experience in coastal management into tangible, thoughtful, and collaborative solutions that provide countless benefits to surfers, beachgoers, homeowners, and of course, the critters.

Chiaro uses figurative painting to invite the viewer

to enter a unique world or moment. She loves duality and opposition, balance over symmetry, and the idea of shared energy. Spending hundreds of hours on a single piece, painting everything by hand in traditional techniques, Chiaro obsessively renders her subjects, caught in moments when they are open and expressive. Through her chosen genre, Magical Realism, Chiaro fuses reality with imagination to create a visceral new “world” for the subject to dwell in and the viewer to observe.

Rescue Mission’s Oceanside Navigation Center, currently under remodel, is projected to open by the end of 2022 at the former Ocean Shores Continuation High School (found at the corner of Oceanside Blvd and El Camino Real). As a private center, guests must be referred for admission by the City of Oceanside Housing Authority or the Oceanside Police Department Homeless Outreach Team. During their 30-day stay, guests will have weekly meetings with Rescue Mission Case Managers who will work with them to help discover their ‘next best step’ following their temporary residence at the center.

The Oceanside Navigation Center serves as part of a larger system of services being developed by the San Diego Rescue Mission, including a collaborative approach between the private and public sectors to address homelessness in San Diego County. On August 1, 2022, the SDRM and the Lucky Duck Foundation convened 12 regional mayors to begin the discussion of solutions that can help provide those experiencing homelessness with the help they need.

As we watch the encampments in our neighborhoods grow, the sad reality is that homelessness in San Diego has become a humanitarian crisis. And, North County has not been spared.

“We are committed to working with our partners to change the state of homelessness throughout San

Diego County, and the Oceanside Navigation Center is our latest regional initiative to help us reach that goal,” said the San Diego Rescue Mission President and CEO Donnie Dee. “By opening Oceanside’s new facility by year’s end and working together with the City’s police department and homeless outreach team, we can create a better future for individuals who find themselves living on the streets through our many resources, programs, and dedicated case managers.”

It will feature 50 beds in large dormitory-style rooms, with separate quarters for men, women, and families. The 12,000+ sq. ft. center will also feature a dining hall and outdoor courtyard, laundry facilities and personal storage area, day center with TVs and computers, resource and training centers, and on-site partner office with access for external organizations to work with guests. The center will be staffed by 24-hour security, 14 staff and volunteers from the Rescue Mission.

Originally from the South Bay of Los Angeles, Kevin Shin planted roots in Oceanside in the 1990s. After serving in the Marine Corps for 13 years, Shin retired and was hired by the Culver City Fire Service, where he currently serves as the Fire Captain. However, he never lost his passion for the food and service industry.

With the renovation of the historic Fin Hotel, Shin saw an opportunity to establish himself within their food and beverage program. Today, he runs four eateries for the hotel, The Switchboard Restaurants & Bar, North County Roastery, Haetae and KNVS. By utilizing local products and services, Shin ensures that hotel guests experience all of Oceanside’s culture. Local artwork can also be seen in North County Roastery’s space, and KNVS, his most recent endeavor, combines gallery art and culinary for a full, immersive experience.

Roasting coffee had always been a hobby, but Shin began to consider it as a potential business opportunity. He eventually decided to open his business in Oceanside saying he felt encouraged by the City staff who guided him through the entire process and showed overall excitement and support.

Construction has commenced at Luma at El Corazon in Oceanside, an apartment community with 268 luxury apartments being developed by Sudberry Properties. El Corazon is a 465-acre City of Oceanside multi-phase development on a former crystal silica mine in the heart of Oceanside.

Luma at El Corazon is adjacent to Frontwave Arena, which will be home to the San Diego Sockers and host concerts, family shows, CIF championships and other events.

Sudberry Properties has commenced construction on Luma at El Corazon, a mixed-use apartment community with 268 luxury apartments located at 3546 Village Commercial Dr. Luma will be the first apartment community within El Corazon, a 465-acre City of Oceanside multi-phase development on a former crystal silica mine in the heart of Oceanside. The city has set aside approximately 400 acres of El Corazon for parks, open space and civic uses. Sudberry Properties was selected in 2011 as the master developer of commercially designated land within El Corazon.

Contemporary-styled apartments, ranging from 691 to 1,440 square feet, will feature stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, wood-style flooring and in-unit washers and dryers. There are 11 floorplan configurations, all featuring an outdoor deck, balcony or patio.

Colton Sudberry, president of Sudberry Properties, said Luma at El Corazon will be comprised of 23 threestory buildings with a mix of 113 one-bedroom, 120 two-bedroom and 35 three-bedroom apartments, surrounding a stylish recreation center and pool. The leasing center and the first phase of apartments are anticipated to open in fall 2023. Amenities at Luma will include a beautifully furnished club room with a demonstration kitchen and adjoining covered patio, a conference room and an indoor/

outdoor fitness center. The pool and spa area includes lounges and barbecue facilities. Colorful Mediterranean landscaping will complement the architectural aesthetic and setting.

In keeping with the overall architectural theme of El Corazon, the design of Luma has been influenced by Irving Gill, a major figure in the early 20th-century modernist movement, with clean angular lines, ground-level arches and breezeways. Oceanside City Hall and Fire Station are notable examples of Gill’s historic architecture.

When Marcy Browe moved from Venice Beach to Oceanside in 2014 she had just left a career in high tech marketing and decided to turn her passion for photographing people into a full time job. Marcy’s grandfather was a professional photographer who started his business in the 1940s in Pittsburgh, PA. The love of photography was passed down to her and she learned the craft using his cameras. At first she considered photography a hobby and didn’t intend to make a living out of it. She graduated college with a degree in advertising and had a career in corporate marketing. After 15 years in a fast paced industry, she was burned out and started dreaming of starting a photography business. She finally had the chance to make this dream a reality when she left her corporate career and moved to Oceanside. Marcy uses her background in marketing to offer branding photography to business owners and corporations, who need photos to market themselves. “People come to me when they’re ready to expand, re-brand or promote their business, so I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many incredible business owners throughout North County.”

During the early months of the COVID pandemic, Marcy was among many business owners who saw their business come to a halt. “It was a really scary,

her home, but her photography business quickly grew and she now has a photo studio in Oceanside. She credits the growth of her photography business to actively networking and consistently engaging with North County’s thriving business community.

With a passion for sustainability, building an ecofriendly business was a priority from day one. Marcy worked with the Oceanside Green Business Network and the California Green Business Network to become a green-certified business. Her commitment to environmental stewardship includes giving a portion or her proceeds to environmentally focused organizations and working with sustainable vendors.

The Brick Hotel, CocoCabana Rooftop Bar, and Q&A Oyster Bar and Restaurant are the latest additions to Downtown Oceanside located at 408 Pier View Way.
