You’ve gotten ready, I’m sure you’re set, now it’s time to go: Recreational boating season is here! After the chilly winter and a still pretty chilly spring, the month of May unfurls before us with bright possibilities. Accordingly, this issue is ready to explore all those prospects with a bounty of boating friendly outings for your bucket list this season.

First up, the jaw droppingly beautiful capes of Washington state beckon from pages 48-54 in the travel feature that takes you all the way from the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States at Cape Flattery to Cape Disappointment nestled near the Washington-Oregon border. Then, on pages 76-77, the team at Worth Avenue Yachts proffers a close-to-home Port of Call with a unique inland yachting itinerary that winds along the mighty Columbia River. Mark Yuasa also outlines the destinations to dig for razor clams and lure some lingcod in Tight Lines (page 64); and, Randy Woods has all the details on the landmark Windermere Cup and Opening Day festivities in Making Waves on page 23, as well as for another May highlight— the Anacortes Boat & Yacht Show on page 24.

This month’s featured vessels are also especially adventure worthy, starting with the burly boats from Stabicraft. Spring For the Fences! Opening Day Is Upon Us

With its baseball theme of “Game On,” the Seattle Yacht Club (SYC) is ready to throw out the first pitch of the recreational boating season. Taking place on May 6, SYC’s Opening Day Parade, party, and log boom gathering, along with the 37th Annual Windermere Cup Regatta, featuring a notable visit by a racing team from Down Under, are quite the lineup.

University of Washington Rowing, along with Windermere Real Estate, will host the legendary Australian National Team, long a major force in eight-oared international rowing competitions. Most recently, the Aussie men’s team took third place in the 2022 World Rowing Championships, while the women finished fifth in the world. The women’s team from Australia also achieved fifth place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, while the men took sixth. This Windermere Cup will be the third appearance by the Australian team, which was also here in 1988 and 1997. To date, UW and Windermere have hosted more than 15 nations over the 36-year history of the regatta. Facing the Aussies this year will be a strong UW Husky roster; the UW men’s team has won the Windermere Cup 26 times in 35 attempts, while the UW women have won 25 out of 35.

At noon, the Opening Day Parade will begin, with dozens of powerboats and sailboats cruising past the log boom on the Montlake Cut to salute SYC Admiral Lance Rummel, Admiralette Nicole Wilkin, and Vice Admiral David Sanford. At the end of the parade, a trophy

presentation will take place on SYC’s lawn to reward the boaters in the parade for various superlatives such as best youth-sponsored vessel or best dressed or best themed boat.

Together, the Windermere Cup and Opening Day celebration have grown into “one of the largest free community events in Seattle,” said OB Jacobi, president of Windermere Real Estate. “With thousands of competitors and spectators coming together at such a spectacular venue, it’s a celebration unlike anything else.”

Several family-themed activities will be available for kids, including a bouncy house, “build a boat” station, a photo booth, and the Dawg Pack student section, providing prime access to view races and the parade. The regatta will also have food and drink vendors on the north side of the Montlake Cut, west of the Montlake Bridge.

On May 5, the Friday night before Opening Day, all of the Windermere Cup crews will race in the annual Twilight Sprints, a race from the regatta’s finish line to the eastern end of the Montlake Cut. Afterward, the annual “Party at the Cut” celebration begins at 6 p.m. near the UW Waterfront Activity Center, featuring live music, food trucks, drinks, and games.

Anacortes Show, Trawlerfest Pair Up Again

As the Opening Day celebrations for the boating season begin to ebb, the party will shift to the Anacortes Boat & Yacht Show, where the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA) is again partnering with Trawlerfest on the event that runs from May 18-20.

The main portion of the Boat & Yacht Show’s nearly 200 in-water displays will be located at Cap Sante Marina, but additional boats can also be viewed on land in nearby boatyards and dealers, which can be accessed via a free shuttle service during the show. Attendees can also visit shoreside displays of boating accessories, services, and trailerable boats adjacent to the Cap Sante Marina main entrance.

As was the case at last year’s NMTA show, the Anacortes Boat & Yacht Show will coincide with the five-day Trawlerfest conference, which will begin two days earlier than the Boat & Yacht Show. Trawlerfest will offer more than 30 in-depth educational seminars across five days from May 16-20, covering such topics as sailing the “Great Loop” of the Eastern U.S., Mexico’s “Little Loop” route, the Pacific Coast of Central America, and the Inside Passage. Also, town hall-style Q&A sessions will be held about various wide-ranging topics suggested by the audience.

Prices for the Trawlerfest sessions start at $65 per seminar and will feature some of leading experts in the maritime industry, including Mike Beemer, John Clayman, Jim Merrick, Jeff Merrill, Pat Rains, Kim Russo, Bob Sweet, and many others. Tutorial session topics at Trawlerfest will include boat-handling, anchoring, deepwater cruising, equipment maintenance, course charting, weather tips, handling medical emergencies, boat financing, and use of the latest apps and navigational electronics.

The combined Anacortes shows are expected to draw thousands of attendees to view hundreds of new yachts from more than 75 exhibitors. Last year, NMTA said, the event was attended by buyers from 34 different states. This trend of growth for marine shows is predicted to continue post-pandemic, according to a recent NMTA survey, conducted by Bellevue-based GMA Research.

Fourth Wave Comes Ashore for Maritime Blue

The Maritime Blue Innovation Accelerator program will award seven more startup maritime-oriented companies, some of which are based in Washington state, with business-planning assistance and mentorship. This latest list of “cohort” companies is the fourth iteration of the accelerator program, which was launched in early 2020.

The accelerator, developed by Washington Maritime Blue, is a four-month, mentor-based program that brings together experts from Washington, the Northwest, and beyond to teach business skills, provide startup advice, and connect companies with local and global advisors. The program also helps each cohort scale-up their ideas, understand legal considerations about startups, begin marketing programs, and learn about potential investment, financing, and other business opportunities ahead.

Two of this year’s startups are both based in Bellevue: CargoCheck, a cloud-based software platform that helps manufacturers manage and deliver bulk and packaged cargo to customers, and Gybe, described as “a work-day platform for frontline and desk-less workers.”

One of the accelerator startups of particular interest to recreational boaters is Dockshare, which could be described as the “Airbnb of boat docking.” Dockshare is an app-based service that connects private dock owners and marinas with boaters who wish to rent available unused dock space nationwide. While Dockshare is based in Baltimore, Maryland, it is rapidly expanding across the country, and as of press time, has several rental options available in the Northwest region.

Other companies rounding out the cohort list include:

• Atargis Energy (Pueblo, CO): A power generation company seeking to capture the energy of ocean waves and convert them to baseload electricity at a cost of approximately $0.06 per kWh.

• Berkeley Marine Robotics (Oakland, CA): A developer of small, low-cost, autonomous underwater robots that perform hull inspections, assess biofouling from invasive species, and reduce maritime fuel use caused by friction from the hull growths.

• HyperKelp (Encinitas, CA): A maker of solar-powered, floating Kelp Smart Buoys that can transmit acoustic, photographic, video, and other real time sensor data to any desired location on the Earth’s surface.

• qualiTEAS (St. John's, Newfoundland): A Canadian engineering firm that provides subsea corrosion inspection services using optical spectroscopy on a wide range of maritime assets.

Over the next few months, these startups, in what is being called the accelerator’s “fourth wave,” will participate in global networking events and mentorship opportunities to develop their ideas. “These companies are all ready for venture capital and are poised for significant economic, environmental, and community impact,” says Joshua Berger, CEO of Maritime Blue.

The program will now offer these startups programming and mentorship assistance, as well as access to a cluster of industry leaders, research institutions, public agencies, and community organizations, which can help provide “a pipeline for capital investment,” Berger said.

The Washington Maritime Blue is a nonprofit strategic alliance formed to promote innovation and sustainability in support of an inclusive maritime businesses, collectively known as the blue economy. The organization is a partnership between industry, public sector, research and training institutions, and community organizations, as well as the Port of Seattle.

Atmospheric Change

Making waves amongst Northwest sailors, this ingenious new prototype produces potable water from the air found in the atmosphere.

Entrepreneurs are known to spend extensive amounts of time researching the marketplace for their new products, but even so, sometimes a surprising market pops up out of the blue—or in this case, out of thin air. First formed as the result of a class project amongst peers in college, Texas-based AtmoSpark is a water generation company that set out to provide clean drinking water in places of scarcity—such as, developing third world countries, remote areas without running water, even disaster relief aid—and ended up also attracting the attention of sailors, racers, and boaters with its new watermaker, BluElement.

“As we started to display the prototype around the country, after every show we noticed that a lot of the people that stayed and chatted with us were RVers or boaters, asking questions about the tech and whether it could be used onboard,” explains co-founder Matt Bukovichy, who recently made rounds at the Seattle Boat Show in February. “Frankly it wasn’t a market that was originally high on our list, but we soon realized we had a solution for them as well.”

The solution: AtmoSpark’s BluElement produces potable drinking water from the humidity found in the air; there’s no need for water lines, no pumping sea water, no pressure system, and no need to lug

heavy and wasteful water bottles. Co-founder Aniket Khade, director of engineering, explains the system pulls in ambient air and runs it through an electrical charge that increases the humidity of that air, which then produces water droplets. “Much like solar power provides independence, this system allows you to take control of your water, whether that is offshore on a boat, or in places where it is scarce, like in my home country of India,” he adds.

Earlier this year, AtmoSpark opened pre-orders for the first prototype, which currently can output 3-5 gallons of water per week, depending on the ecology of the air. Consumers can expect to see a model by mid-summer. And while this first iteration weighs in at around 50 pounds, Bukovichy and Khade say they expect to lighten the load in subsequent models by re-evaluating the casing materials.

“This type of hassle-free device is what we have been looking for,” says David Gallimore, a longtime racer with the Corinthian Yacht Club in Seattle and a fan of the space-saving device.

“It opens doors to more people looking for a more relaxing and pleasurable experience.”

2023 Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS I/O

With a spacious open-air cockpit, sleek styling, and ample space for gathering, the new Cruiser Yachts 38 GLS I/O, available from Silver Seas Yachts, truly is a summer dream.

This new Cruisers Yachts 38 Grand Luxury Sport (GLS) is versatile enough for all types of near-shore day use and an excellent size for cruising on large lakes, such as Lake Washington. The easy-to-handle vessel sleeps four and can be powered by either Volvo or Mercury twin stern-drive inboards, which are available in 380- and 430-hp models. There is also an option to equip the boat with outboards, depending on customer needs. The top speed for the 380-hp motors is rated at 47 mph.

The first feature to be noticed on the inboard Cruiser 38 is the spacious, convertible swim platform location at the stern. To add even more recreational fun, the beach doors can be folded flat on the water’s surface or hydraulically submerged for easier swimmer access. The aft facing bench backrest can also swivel to either face the cockpit or the beach door.

The open-concept cockpit has a plenty of seating options, including facing bench seats around a convertible table in the bow lounge (accessible through the walk-through windshield) and two L-shaped dinettes located amidship around a teak dinette table. The bow lounge is also wired with Rockford Fosgate speakers to keep the party going into the evening.

2023 Greenline 48 Fly Hybrid

This electric new release from Greenline Hybrid Yachts Northwest harnesses the latest in hybrid e-techology to deliver an elegantly appointed, earth-friendly cruiser.

Not only is the Greenline 48 Fly Hybrid an exciting fresh release for 2023, it’s a leap forward in hybrid diesel-electric technology. Powered by two types of engines, the 48 Fly can use its twin Yanmar 8LV, 370-hp diesel powertrains to sprint up to about 25-30 knots when needed, then rely on its two whisperquiet electric motors to reach cruising speeds of 4 to 6.5 knots over a 20 nautical-mile range. In addition, a single charge of the boat’s lithum-polymer 40 kWh batteries lasts about

three hours, but this range can be extended with use of the diesel engines, which act as generators during use. There is even a 700-watt array of solar panels on the coach roof for emissions-free recharging.

The 48, with a layout by J&J Design, is considered the flagship of the Greenline family of hybrid yachts, which first hit the market in 2009. While its nearly silent and earth-friendly operations are among its key attributes, the vessel does have some strikingly posh stan-

dard accommodations, such as dark laminate floors in the salon, a choice of teak veneer and upholstery colors in all furniture, and wooden Venetian blinds in golden oak or white oak.

The cockpit is wide and spacious, featuring a forward-facing teak bench seat and remotecontrolled transom platform extender to create extra entertaining space for up to eight people. Inside the open-layout salon is a U-shaped sofa to port, a dinette table with foldable flaps, and an option for a Miele 48-bottle wine chiller.

The helm has a full suite of Garmin electronics, plus a Fantom 56 72-mile radar, Simrad AP70 autopilot, ICOM model IC-M59 VHF, Naiad H12 bow thruster controls, two Furuno FA-150 AIS and NavNet controllers, and Interphase forward-scanning sonar. Two watertight sliding sidedeck doors lead to the foredeck, featuring a queen-size sun pad, a bench seat, and two teak chaise lounges.

Belowdecks, the full-beam owner’s stateroom has a centerline king size bed and a sit-down vanity with lift-up desktop. CAPE DISAPPOINTMENT

John Meares may have been disappointed by his visit to this lush promontory located on the border line of Washington and Oregon states—as legend goes, the English sea captain was looking for the ocean estuary of the mighty Columbia, but thought he’d only discovered another bay when he reached the Cape in 1788, hence, its dispirited and mistaken moniker—but, we can almost guarantee that you won’t be let down by a visit. In fact, the Washington State Parks website sums up its thrills nicely: “Lighthouses stand sentinel atop windswept cliffs, sea smells waft up through the air, and waves collide with a crash where the Pacific Ocean meets the Columbia River below.”

Yes, Cape Disappointment and its accompanying state park offer up a breathtaking spectacle of nature, with old-growth forests, freshwater lakes, saltwater marshes, and ocean tidelands all available to explore. The area is also steeped in history that goes beyond its name, as the Cape is also home to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center that celebrates the duo’s illustrious trek out West, and not one but two lighthouses, one named after the Cape and located near the Lewis & Clark Center, as well as the North Head Lighthouse, which is open beginning this month and on into fall to visitors.

Boaters would do well to begin their journey at Baker Bay. Located just inside the mouth of the Columbia River, behind Cape Disappointment on

the north side of the river, this picturesque bay offers a boat ramp and 135 feet of docking space (be sure to grab a daily launch permit from the office or have your Discover Pass in hand). Alternatively, the Port of Ilwaco offers guest moorage in a bustling spot that offers direct access to the charming nearby waterfront town of Ilwaco.

Follow your bliss from there as you head towards the Pacific: Fishers love to set up on the North Jetty or near the famed Buoy 10, near the town of Ilwaco, to snag salmon or even crab in season; hikers can indulge in the eight miles of winding trails the park provides; kite-fliers, sand-castle builders, and clam-diggers can take their pick of the beaches (we recommend Benson Beach to those seeking clams); or, history lovers can head up the cliffside to take in the full range of exhibits found at the Lewis & Clark Center or spy the remnants of Fort Canby and the accompanying World War II-era battery that are still tucked into the rocky terrain. Experienced and prepared skippers could take a tour out to sea for incomparable views of the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and a peekaboo look at Deadman’s Cove, before heading back towards Ilwaco. Our only advice is to call ahead to Serious Pizza on your return journey so that you can feast your eyes on yet another prize found near the Cape: the family-owned pizzeria’s piping-hot ‘za. CAPE FLATTERY

Perched on the very northwesternmost edge of the contiguous United States, near Neah Bay on the Makah Indian Reservation, Cape Flattery transports you to a world teeming with marine life: Vibrantly hued sea stars cling to undersides of the rocks; cormorants and seagulls call from overhead; sea lions bask in the sometimes fleeting sunshine; and briny bivalves dot almost every inch of the beachscape that sits in between the 200-foot-high cliffs.

There are two ways to find your way to this Cape, both equally epic and enjoyable: Landlubbers can park at the Cape Flattery trailhead and enjoy the surprisingly accessible hike that winds its way to a jaw-dropping viewpoint. (Just don’t forget to purchase a recreation pass, available at most businesses in Neah Bay, including the marina, before you lace up those hiking boots; the area is under the management of the welcoming Makah people.) Your efforts on the .75-mile-long hike are rewarded with stunning views of the Pacific and Tatoosh Island, where the lonely 1857-era Cape Flattery lighthouse still stands watch over the waves that crash into the rocky shoreline from seemingly all directions.

Or, you can drink up these same views from an entirely different perspective on the water. The nearest moorage to Cape Flattery is located at the Makah Marina in Neah Bay, which is well outfitted with 200 slips, or the friendly folks at Big Salmon Fishing Resort are only too happy to set up a charter boat to squire you about the sights or a dedicated fishing excursion. Before leaving town, indulge in a crab feed, buttery halibut, or salmon-and-chips meal at Calvin’s Crab House, best enjoyed at one of the sunny picnic tables that overlook the serene bay. Sailing westwardly from the main town of Neah Bay towards the Cape, which is a 4-nautical-mile-long journey, you’ll pass by intricate inlets with pines stretching for the skies from their precarious perches; the truly ambitious could swing south past the Cape to journey towards the popular Hobuck Beach, or even further to Shi Shi Beach, which is home to the truly resplendent mile-long parade of rocky sea stacks. If you snagged a parking pass earlier in the expedition, you could alternatively also park at the Shi Shi trailhead and meander the trail to your just reward: views, upon views, upon views. CAPE ALAVA

If you made the trek to Cape Flattery, here’s your next pit stop: Capa Alava near Ozette, which also lies within the Olympic National Park. While Cape Flattery takes the distinction of the northwesternmost point of the lower 48, Alava is the westernmost, putting you just that much closer to the precipice of the great blue sea. This stunning spot is perhaps most well-known as a coveted destination along the 9-mile-long Ozette Loop trail popular amongst hikers, but the beach is accessible via a shorter 3.5-mile-long hike from the trailhead or to the intrepid who brave paddling ashore. The aura of seclusion and intimacy looms large here as visitors are prohibited from going north of this spot into the Ozette Indian reservation, but the beach provides all the views you could ever want of tree-topped Tskawahyah Island. The amount of beachcombing you’ll do is dictated by the sea, as the westernmost point of the Cape is submerged by the high tide. CAPE SAINT MARY

Located closer to home perhaps, on the eastern edge of Lopez Island, Cape Saint Mary provides a serene spot for a sojourn. Accessible only by the water, this petite Cape offers a small, rocky beach that boasts scenic vistas of the Rosario Strait, as well as pretty peek-a-boos at seasonal wildflowers and local wildlife like sea birds, deer, and otters. The best way to approach the beach is from the north at low tide, and given the rocky topography of the landing site, this is the time for your tender, canoe, kayak, or other shallow draft boat to shine. Preceding or succeeding your respite on the Cape, Lopez provides myriad other delights: Cape Saint Mary is located just one nautical mile due north of Watmough Bay, resplendent with its tranquil bay, wooded cliffs, and pebbly beach. Or, you can craft your own scenic cruise by sailing just a bit farther north of the cape and around Sperry Point to then glide by, in order: Cayou; Ram; Skull; Fortress; and Crab islands on your approach into the Hunter Bay County Ramp, where you can dock and then head ashore for a day hike or walkabout along the shore. Should you need to stock up on provisions or indulge in a tasty homemade meal, the charming Southend General Store and Restaurant is located a pleasant 2-mile jaunt down the road from the aforementioned Hunter Bay boat ramp, or just a half mile away from the hidden little haven of Mackaye Harbor and its boat ramp, located on the opposite, southwestern side of the isle. There, you’ll also find the Mackaye Harbor Resort, where you can hang your hat for the night should you wish to while away an additional day on the isle. Stabicraft. Though that last brand name may be known to savvy Northwest boaters, the company it now keeps may raise a few eyebrows: The New Zealand-based Stabicraft recently opened its first U.S. production facility in Port Angeles, thereby joining the ranks of the five other manufacturers that churn out hulls on the Olympic Peninsula.

First founded in 1987, Stabicraft today is New Zealand’s biggest boat building company and has long been known for producing brawny, beastly aluminum vessels built to brave the elements, a reputation that connects back to the company’s very inception.

Founder Paul Adams built his first vessels to fit the needs of commercial abalone divers who were seeking to combat the challenging conditions they often faced on the job; the New Zealand shores where they fished were ill-suited to standard inflatables that would pop if they bumped against the sharp rocks, and fiberglass hulls were a non-starter. Adams decided to try an aluminum fabrication in answer to this trying situation, cleverly designing his vessels with individually sealed buoyancy chambers as an added safety feature.

It was a hit in the commercial sector, and in the following decades, the recreational market also picked up as the company’s designs became increasingly more sophisticated, all the while maintaining the same sturdy appeal.

“Stabicraft has always been fueled by a brand ethos: adventure with confidence,” states Simon Owen, a marketing strategist at the company’s Invercargill headquarters. “And that comes through in a lot of different ways through the robust nature of these boats. You could almost say they are over-engineered; take a 15-foot Stabicraft, for example, it’s got the engineering and build strength of a vessel more than twice its size. It can withstand the elements.”

The first Stabicraft crossed the Pacific in 1988, landing in British Columbia, and by the mid-‘90s, the company’s vessels were being imported with regularity to the Pacific Northwest, a market that Owen states shares many similarities with New Zealand, both in temperament and topography. “You know, Kiwis are quite innovative and we also have this massive marine playground to explore,” he explains. “I think it’s a fair assessment to say the Pacific Northwest is very similar on both of those

fronts. We sent our boats over in their rawest form and they were just instantly at home in the Northwest.”

It’s become home, sweet home indeed: Of the approximately 1,000 boats that Stabicraft manufactured in 2022, around 250 were imported straight to the Northwest and dispersed via the brand’s dealership partners in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and British Columbia.

But, despite their successes in the Upper Left, Stabicraft knew that in order to continue to grow, they would need to confront some logistical challenges.

For the past decade, the company has been unable to keep the supply up to the demand for their seaworthy craft. Having to send vessels halfway across the world from the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, led to long lead times and caused hiccups even in the best of times, but even more so during the pandemic era. “We knew if we wanted to go beyond the West Coast, to keep pushing the brand forward, we’d need a North American home base as well,” says Owen.

Thus, Stabicraft began poking around its stateside stomping grounds in search of a production facility, approaching different port cities and commissioners, many within the Puget Sound, about options. But once the team talked to officials in Port Angeles, where a 16,800-square-foot former Airborne ECS building on O Street sat vacant, they knew they’d found something special. “Port Angeles is actually quite similar to our hometown of Invercargill,” says Owen. “A little quieter and tucked away from the big city, but with a strong maritime heritage and tradition for boat building. It had so much we could relate to.” Founder Adams concurs, “We have so many opportunities for the operation to grow in this facility, not only thinking about the short-term, thinking about the long term as well.”

Stabicraft moved into the O Street building in phases over the course of 2022. At first, the facility acted as a catch-and-release point for the models arriving from New Zealand that needed to be unpacked and sent to their new homes in America. As they have built up the facility and local staff over the past year though, the Port Angeles site now also provides the finish work on several models partially built in Invercargill.

Here comes the next chapter for the new North American venture: The Port Angeles Stabicraft facility has begun to roll their first fully built vessels off the line, the 2250 Ultra CentreCab dubbed “Alpha.”

Built in-house from bow to stern with aggressive styling, this 22.5’ limited edition workhorse embodies

the long-standing Stabicraft spirit of innovation with a 360-degree walkaround platform, forward-ranking windscreen that increases the cabin size by 33 percent over the brand’s conventional CentreCab design, and a splashy hull painted in a Seahawks-esque action green hue. The first hull was built over the 2022 Christmas holidays and emerged at the Seattle Boat Show in February; the goal is to churn out 100 models by year’s end.

In celebration of these first boats built in the U.S., each Alpha owner will be inducted into a “Limited 100 Club” and given exclusive swag and branding. The company is thus hoping these first owners will act like grassroots brand ambassadors as it pushes for more growth and more specifically, looks to stretch Stabicraft’s reach inland by adding more dealers. Stabicraft believes it can capture a larger share of the North American market because the vessels are trailerable, and thus well-suited to lakes and rivers as well as open water boating.

They are also versatile. The brand’s boats are all built off a similar platform that utilizes the same strong tube frame across the board, but are then customized

with varying features, making it easy for buyers to essentially mix-and-match to suit whatever type of boating they enjoy. The brand currently works off of 13 core models, which range in size from 14.5- to 27.5-feet long, and outfitted with ultratough windscreens, roomy cabins, and other adventure-ready features like live wells, gunwhale storage for rods, even extended aft deck roofing for added protection in the elements.

Stabicraft’s growth mindset also applies to design, which will continue to be handled by brand’s interior team of 10 that distills the company’s ethos into the vessels. “Paul [Adams] has always stated that if you build something the same way it’s always been done, chances are someone else will come in and build it better than you,” says Owen. “Instead, Stabicraft has always tried to step all the way back and reverse engineer things from the beginning.”

As an example of this, Owen points to a recent awardwinning design feature found in the 2250 Ultracab WT Adventure model, a sister ship of the Alpha. The cabin boasts a unique three-piece walkthrough glass door that, instead of

swinging out and taking up valuable space, folds up into the ceiling, which allows boaters to then walk up a series of foldout steps and out to a forward utility deck. When not in use, the glass design seals tight against the superstructure of the cabin and allows for clear visibility from inside the cabin.

As they move the throttle forward, the Port Angeles facility will allow Stabicraft to be nimble and make adjustments as they see fit for the North American market in the months and years to come. “I think as we learn more about the market and learn from our own people in Port Angeles, it will influence future designs,” says Owen.

“We like being a disruptive force, a force for change,” he states in conclusion. “It’s never imitation with us, it’s more like ‘where in the hell did that come from?’ That is something Stabicraft has always done and will continue to do. And we think it’s the kind of renegade attitude that appeals to Americans as well.”

MARK YUASA previews an exciting month of May that marks the return of two of the state’s greatest hits—lingcod and razor clams.

The Puget Sound lingcod fishing season gets underway on May 1, and while these toothy, bucket-mouthed fish won’t win any beauty contests, anglers are always attracted to the good fight they put up. Plus, any struggle is well-rewarded as lingcod is one of the better tasting creatures in the sea.

Lingcod populations in inner-Puget Sound hit bottom in the 1970s due to overfishing, but improved management in the early ‘80s allowed them to regain strength and their numbers have remained strong enough to allow sport fishing in spring and early summer. Lingcod catches have been decent in recent years in the San Juan Islands (Marine Area 7), Saratoga Pass (Marine Area 8-1), and northern Puget Sound (Marine Area 9). Places seeing a decline in success include Port Susan and Port Gardner, and central and southcentral Puget Sound (Marine Areas 8-2, 10, and 11).

The sport lingcod fishery is open daily through June 15 in the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Sekiu to Port Angeles (Marine Areas 5 and 6), San Juan Islands (Marine Area 7), and most of Puget Sound (Marine Areas 8-1, 8-2, 9, 10, 11 and 13).

The lingcod daily limit is one per angler. Minimum size limit is 26 inches and maximum size is 36 inches. This slot limit is a key reason why lingcod populations have remained somewhat healthy in Puget Sound and includes releasing the over-sized females.

Keys to Lingcod Success

Locating some sort of structure on the bottom of the ocean floor is key to sleuthing out lingcod, usually found around rocky pinnacles, reefs, rock piles, steep drop-offs or ledges, a breakwater or jetty, or almost any hard rocky bottom. In most instances, anglers don’t need to fish that deep and can find lingcod lurking at depths from 50 to 90 feet. Having a fish finder is a valuable tool when it comes to finding lingcod holes.

The easiest spot to find them are near the breakwater at local marinas although they tend to get cleaned out rather quickly. For shore anglers, local piers around Puget Sound offer the best chance to catch lingcod. Usually, the best time is an hour before and after slack tide—high or low tide depends on the location—since it’s the timeframe that allows you to keep your presentation right in front of the lingcod’s face. Be keenly aware of when the current is running hard and/or the wind is blowing. During these periods you’re likely to snag and lose tackle around rocky structures or you’ll zip right over a fishing hole before you even get your lines down to the lingcod hotspots. This is where positioning your boat becomes important.

Lingcod are nonmigratory, rather solitary, and predatory creatures who don’t appreciate anything coming into their territory. They like to hide in their lair and jump out at unaware prey swimming nearby.

Puget Sound sees heavy angling pressure when the season kicks off, and it tends to get fished out quickly of keeper-sized lingcod.

Target lingcod around reefs south at Richmond Beach, north of the Edmonds Marina and southeast of Alki Point; the rocky breakwaters off the Pier 91 Marina in Elliott Bay, the Shilshole Bay Marina and the Edmonds Marina; the San Juan Islands; Point Evans near the Narrows Bridge; Possession Bar; Toliva Shoal off Steilacoom; Alki Point Lighthouse off West Seattle; Itsami Ledge off Henderson Inlet’s north end; Utsalady Bay; Smith Island; and Burrows Island.

Once the Puget Sound lingcod fishery ends, head to Neah Bay, La Push, Westport and Ilwaco (Marine Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4), which are open daily through October 21. The western Strait from Sekiu River mouth west to the Bonilla-Tatoosh border (Area 4) is open daily through October 21 for lingcod. Those without a boat can try coastal jetties at Westport, Cape Disappointment near Ilwaco, and Ocean Shores. Jetties can be hazardous places, so pay close attention to weather conditions, sneaker waves, and slippery rocks and boulders.

Coastal Razor Clam Digs a Possibility in May

Tentative razor clam digging dates for Long Beach and Twin Harbors are May 4-14; Copalis is May 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14; and Mocrocks is May 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13. Final approval will be announced by Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) when marine toxin tests show it is safe, usually a week prior to the scheduled start dates. Digging is allowed during low tide from 12 a.m. through 11:59 a.m. only from May 4-10 on open coastal beaches. Digging will be extended from 4 a.m. through 4 p.m. only on May 11-14 to coincide with the later early afternoon low tides. On open beaches—Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks, and Copalis—the daily limit for tentative digs is 20 clams instead of the usual 15. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. All diggers must keep the first 20 clams they dig, regardless of size or condition.

WDFW is asking beachgoers to avoid disturbing nesting snowy plover birds by staying out of the dunes and areas clearly posted with signs on the southern end of Twin Harbors, known as Midway Beach, and the north end of Long Beach. Center Stage

Competition, camaraderie, thrills, and chills: The adrenaline pumping final race of the Center Sound Series had it all, and DOUG HANSEN gives us the blow by blow.

Center Sound Series is a highly anticipated annual event that draws sailors from all over the Pacific Northwest. The three-race series spans the month of March and invites all manner of keel boats out on the water to measure up against the competition. This exciting racing series, hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle, offers thrilling competition, camaraderie, and breathtaking views, making it a highlight of the sailing season for many sailors.

Anyone reading last month’s column knows the first two races of this year’s series were challenging and shifty light air affairs. Wind directions from every point on the compass and current swirls left heads spinning as racers crossed the finish line. Thankfully, in the third race of the series, the weather gods finally gave us a solid forecast for wind and even some sunshine. The beautiful southerly wind was blowing right on cue on the morning of the race, which combined with a massive ebbing tide to set the stage for a spectacular finale to the three-race series.

Like the previous race of the series, the course was decided on that day, and with the wind forecasted to hold, the race committee opted for a straightforward northward racecourse. The out and back course began near Meadow Point, with racers sailing downwind to Scatchet Head off the south end of Whidbey Island, and then everyone swinging back to the starting area to finish.

The nature of the course set things up for a downwind start, with boats hoisting their spinnakers at the perfect moment as the clock ran down to kick off an all-out drag race towards Whidbey. Lanes of wind greatly benefitted the boats that could stay under the puffs of pressure, and moves that looked like mistakes at first, paid off significantly in the long run. Things got interesting as the current began to flow strongly around the south end of Whidbey Island, making for tricky lay line calls with nearly two knots pushing boats from right to left.

The turn was a total converging of the fleet moment as nearly every boat on the racecourse came together in a mad scramble to drop their spinnakers and get set up for the upwind leg back to the finish line. As the slowest boats started first, some of the bigger, faster boats had to take a

wide line around the pileup to avoid running up the transom of another boat as they dropped their spinnaker.

The upwind leg home was straight into the flowing current and set up for a textbook upwind strategy which essentially boiled down to “get to the beach at Edmonds and stay as close to the dirt as you can.” This is a tried-and-true approach, but has led to more than a few groundings on the bottom over the years, and this race was no exception. Luckily, there were no significant casualties on the racecourse, and the boats that did touch were able to free themselves before any severe consequences set in. It was indeed a game of feet and inches as the boats closest to shore made significant gains on the outside competition; there were tense moments as skippers and tacticians had to work together to keep putting the boat where they wanted it to be with every tack, sometimes with only feet under the keel and the competition literally within an arm’s reach.

As the afternoon passed and the fleet neared the finish line, the wind began to soften and shift towards the west. With the current still flowing, it felt like trying to throw a ping pong ball into a basketball hoop as boats tacked out towards the finish line only to get pushed back away, needing to recalculate and try again to finish the race.

While the Center Sound Series is known for its competitive spirit, with sailors pushing the limits of their boats and skills to secure a spot on the podium, it also fosters a sense of camaraderie and community among participants, some of whom have been racing against one another for decades. Sailors often share tips, advice, and stories, creating a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes sportsmanship and friendship, over a cold drink at the Shilshole Clubhouse after racing.

While sometimes frustrating, it is remarkable to race surrounded by Puget Sound’s beauty while fostering friendships and competition among fellow sailors. Bright Spots

Playing off the piquant powerhouse flavors of a classic Bloody Mary cocktail, these impressive shooters are sure to hit the spot (prawn, that is).

With spot prawns just about to make their always anticipated annual spring-summer appearance in the Pacific Northwest, I can think of no better way to fire up the prawning season than with these visually stunning shooters. This recipe, from my cocktail book: The New Bloody Mary: Classics, Riffs & Contemporary Recipes for the Modern Bar, is a three-step process loaded with lots of seasonings and spices to impart big, bold flavor in a petite package. But, never fear, the ingredients are easily found at your local supermarket. What I love about these shooters is they taste fantastic, and offer succulent nibbles within a cocktail, which makes them a little dangerous because it’s easy to forget they contain alcohol. These savory sips are like a tiny private party for both your eyes and taste buds. So, cheers as we celebrate our region’s wonderful spot prawns!

Spicy Bloody Mary Gazpacho & Spot Prawn Shooters

Serves 20

Lime wedges

Fresh ground black pepper, as needed, optional

Spicy Bloody Mary Gazpacho, recipe follows

Fresh dill sprigs

Rim the shot glasses with the lime wedges and then the black pepper, if desired. Pour the gazpacho into the glasses. Garnish with the Spicy Bloody Mary Roasted Shrimp and fresh dill sprigs. Serve chilled.

Spicy Bloody Mary Roasted Shrimp

1 cup Bloody Mary mix

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon Tabasco hot sauce

½ teaspoon celery salt

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

20 fresh wild-caught spot prawns, peeled, deveined, and tails left intact

In a medium-sized mixing bowl or large Ziplock bag, add the Bloody Mary mix, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, celery salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Add the prawns and let marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour, stirring halfway through the marinade time.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Prepare a sheet pan by lining it with aluminum foil for easy clean up. Drain the prawns and discard the marinade. Place the prawns, in a single layer, on the sheet pan. Roast the prawns until pink in color and cooked through, about 5 to 8 minutes. Be careful not to overcook. Note: You can also grill the prawns on an outdoor grill or barbecue.

Spicy Bloody Mary Gazpacho

Makes about 4½ cups

½ roasted red bell pepper

½ cucumber

1 stalk of celery, with leaves

¼ red onion, peeled

1 pound ripe cherry tomatoes (gold and red), halved

1 clove garlic, peeled and minced

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

½ teaspoon sugar

¾ teaspoon celery salt

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon prepared horseradish

½–1 teaspoon Tabasco hot sauce

1½ cups Bloody Mary mix

2–3 ounces premium vodka

Salt and pepper, to taste

In a blender, pulse the red bell pepper until coarsely chopped. Be careful not to over blend. Transfer to a large mixing bowl. Repeat the process for the cucumber, celery, onion, and tomatoes; blending them each and adding to the bowl. Add to the bowl the garlic, salt, black pepper, sugar, celery salt, Worcestershire sauce, lime juice, olive oil, horseradish, hot sauce, Bloody Mary mix, and vodka. Stir thoroughly to combine. Transfer half the mixture back to the bowl of the blender. Purée until smooth, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add the puréed gazpacho back to the mixing bowl. Mix and adjust seasoning, according to taste, with salt and pepper. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 (up to 6) hours to allow flavors to marry. Taste for seasoning again before serving.

Almota, WA

Heading further east, and you’ll embark on a new journey of the Snake River.
