Walk through any commercial construction project and you’ll notice something interesting. The most important parts of the building are often the least visible. Customers admire the finished product. They notice the exterior, the finishes, the layout and the appearance. What they don’t see are the engineering calculations, the foundation work, the structural supports, the utilities hidden behind the walls and the inspections that occurred long before the building opened its doors. Yet those invisible elements determine whether the building can safely carry the load it was designed to support.
The same is true in the lumber and building materials industry. Most leaders spend their time focused on what is visible — sales growth, inventory levels, customer relationships, delivery performance, market share and profitability. Those things matter. They should matter. But many businesses don’t struggle because of what customers can see. They struggle because of what leaders cannot see. The reality is that most LBM companies do not fail from a lack of effort. They struggle because the structure of the business can no longer carry the load being placed upon it.
