Throughout the world, there are 125 species of goldenrods. Of these, around 90 are found in North America. The tall goldenrod, Solidago canadensis, decorates fields and roadsides each autumn. The Northeast, and particularly New England is home to up to 50 kinds. In late summer and autumn, the tall rods and plumes appear in fields in such profusion that they are the dominant color of the season. In Europe, where only a couple of not very showy species are found as natives, some of the more luxuriant North American varieties have been carefully cultivated in gardens and have been popular as border plants. Late in the season, when summer flowers are gone, goldenrod has no trouble attracting hungry bees with its late blooming blossoms. Another creature attracted to goldenrods is the preying mantis.
