Throughout the world, there are 125 species of goldenrods. Of these, around 90 are found in North America. The tall goldenrod, Solidago canadensis, decorates fields and roadsides each autumn. The Northeast, and particularly New England is home to up to 50 kinds.

In late summer and autumn, the tall rods and plumes appear in fields in such profusion that they are the dominant color of the season. In Europe, where only a couple of not very showy species are found as natives, some of the more luxuriant North American varieties have been carefully cultivated in gardens and have been popular as border plants. Late in the season, when summer flowers are gone, goldenrod has no trouble attracting hungry bees with its late blooming blossoms. Another creature attracted to goldenrods is the preying mantis. It is recommended that people talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them.

The Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Township Historical Society Presents Dingmans Ferry Hotels A blast from the past describing some of our Village Hotels/Resorts by Fred Cron, the son of one of the past hotel owners. Hear what it was like in the days when guests travelled many miles to enjoy what Dingmans Ferry had to offer. Presentation will be held Thursday, September 16th 7:00PM at the Delaware Township Municipal Building. Members have been actively working to complete renovations to the Historical Museum at Akenac Park. We are planning our Grand Re-Opening for Saturday, September, 21st at 10:00AM to 4:00PM. Do we have enough TP? What a year 2021 has been. We’ve been through quite a bit with the ongoing pandemic and political elections; we’ve seen grocery stores empty and quite the shortage paper goods including toilet paper. Who would’ve thought that toilet paper would be one of the most sought after products during that time? As we pull through this era and start heading into the fall season of 2021, new ways of thinking have been developed in a manner of being prepared.

About Me I’m sure you are wondering exactly who I am since George Beodeker has been writing these for the past few years. My name is Matthew Light and I was recently brought in for Delaware Townships Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator. I grew up in a suburb of Detroit MI called St. Clair Shores with an aspiration of being in the military. I vividly remember the tragic day of 9/11 during my junior year of high school and subsequently signed up for the Army Airborne not long after my 17th birthday. After multiple combat tours overseas and moving to various states within the United States I’ve finally set up roots in my wife’s hometown of Dingmans Ferry.

Upcoming Winter Season Winter is upon us! As I write this, we only have 10 more weeks left of decent weather before we take the plunge into the cold and darkness of winter. I know; sounds terrible, and for many they would agree. However for me personally, I love the winter just as much as the summer. It’s a change in season and brings with it new challenges, scenery and opportunities outside! The scenery of a fresh coating of snow with the sun glimmering off the ice covered trees is a beautiful sight, but no doubt comes with challenges of our daily life. This is where being prepared and making the right preparations prior can either mean an easy, hot coffee morning or a morning filled with cursing and wishing you moved to Florida.

Being self-reliant is definitely a trait of people from this area and I take pride in my abilities and preparedness so if I find myself in a situation, recovering from it is much easier. A few things to consider that I also use / think about for the upcoming winter season are:

Generators are great to have as a backup source of power, especially if you require life supporting equipment such has oxygen mask equipment or standard equipment like a CPAP, fridge, freezer or power your home heating.

Make a checklist Checklists are great and I currently have a spring and fall checklist that I use. With my extremely busy schedule, it helps keep me on track and remember all the little things. For instance, before I started using a checklist I forgot about clearing the condensation drain for the AC handler. It froze and cracked over the winter but didn’t realize it until the following summer when water was dripping from my bedroom ceiling causing hundreds worth of damage.

Commuting and Driving Backups Most of us commute quite a ways to our jobs. It’s just the price we have to pay to live in such a great area but it’s also something we need to prepare for in the winter. Things to consider are: Do you have winter tires?

How is the tread on the winter / all-season tires?

Do you have a kit in the car with emergency food and blankets?

If possible carry a small emergency toolkit, tow strap and hand winch (for self-recovery if you happen to slide off the road and into the snow) My experience living in this community thus far has been great and filled with amazing; caring and welcoming people. With the events that have occurred over the past year there is no doubt that we as a community would be able to overcome any emergency we would face. I look forward to a great winter this year and hope for a smooth sailing experience for everyone.

Public Input Sought to Help Update Pike County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan The Pike County Office of Community Planning is leading the process of updating the County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) to help reduce vulnerability and enable local communities to become more resilient to disasters. Public participation is essential to ensure the new plan is effective.

An online Mitigation Survey is available to provide the community an outlet to contribute to the development of the updated HMP. The questionnaire will take approximately 15 minutes and consists of questions about current hazard and disaster issues, and information regarding potential areas vulnerable to disaster. Feedback collected from the survey will remain anonymous. The Public Mitigation Survey is available at www.pikepa. org under the “What’s New” tab.

Pennsylvania Yellow Dot Program Welcome to Pennsylvania’s Yellow Dot Program! This program was created to assist citizens in the “golden hour” of emergency care following a traffic accident when they may not be able to communicate their needs themselves. Placing a yellow dot in your vehicle’s rear window alerts first responders to check your glove compartment for vital information to ensure you receive the medical attention you need.

Following are instructions on how to participate in this program, using the materials contained in this packet.

It is recommended that the medical information sheet be filled out with a pencil, and reviewed and updated as necessary every six months to ensure your information is up to date.

Upon receiving your Yellow Dot information packet: - Fill out the medical information sheet, with one sheet per person participating in the program. If any of your information exceeds the space provided on the sheet, you may attach a separate sheet with the applicable information to the sheet.

The program is a cooperative effort among the Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation, Health and Aging; the Pennsylvania State Police; the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission; and first responders and local law enforcement.

Fire Company To Rededicate Memorial In the aftermath of the horrific events of September 11th, 2001, as the nation struggled to come to terms with the sense of sadness and loss shared by all Americans memorials were conceived and built to commemorate those who perished in the attacks and ensure that tragic day and the legacy of the heroes who responded would never be forgotten. This was a pattern in northeast Pennsylvania and Pike County due in particular to the proximity of the area to the World Trade Center site, what would eventually be called “ground zero” and become for all time hallowed ground.

It was and remains difficult to not speak with or know some county resident that didn't have some personal, family or extended connection to the people and places that were involved that day.

These connections were significantly poignant for members of the Delaware Township Volunteer Fire Company, many with relatives and friends in close proximity

to the events in NYC and first or second hand knowledge of the victims there. In the early hours and days after the attack and in the months to come, fire company members and there families struggled to come to terms with the the feelings of helplessness and many activities were undertaken to provide support to those rescue workers at the scene by collecting and sending supplies to the recovery activities. Early on in the aftermath, it was confirmed that among the 343 members of FDNY and 11 members of Rescue Company 5 to lose their lives that day was Doug Miller Chief of the Mill Rift fire Department here in Pike County and also a former member of Delaware Township Volunteer Fire Company. While his service with Delaware Township was relatively brief and prior to any of the members at the time had joined, his loss was deeply felt and by the end of the first anniversary year discussion was begun on creating a lasting memorial to Doug, his FDNY brothers and the other

of nectar in the goldenrod flowers. A field rich in goldenrod, Joe-Pye weed, boneset, milkweed, black-eyed Susan, and dozens of other perennials supplies copious amounts of insects for birds to rear their young.

European herbalists and physicians have long recognized goldenrods as important plants, even though they are not as plentiful as here. Even their generic name, Solidago, means “to make whole” referring to their medicinal benefits.

Because of its beauty and so many uses, two states -Kentucky and Nebraska - have declared it their official state flower.

While it has long been known as a curative, goldenrod has often been blamed as the cause of hay fever, probably because it blooms in such great numbers at the height of hay fever season. But ragweed is the chief source of the irritants that cause late summer hay fever.

Asters, someone once said, “are the stars fetched from the night skies and planted on the fields of day.” Aster means “star,” which is descriptive of the star-like form of the flowers. Although some 250 species called asters grow around the world, at least 150 are natives of North America, and about 50 might be considered common and widespread. Of our native asters, 55 of them are found in the northeastern United States. September is the best time to see flowering asters because virtually every variety is in bloom sometime during the month. Blues and purples are common colors among asters. Many white varieties are also common often producing subtle shades of pink, violet or blue.

Asters are found in fields, dry sand, salty beaches, swamps, woods, leaf mold, thickets, limestone cliffs and along roadsides. Some thrive in bright sun while others favor shade. Though the New England aster (Aster novae-angliae) is a geographical name, it is by no means limited to New England. Since many nurseries sell these asters, the plants range and numbers have expanded. This perennial likes sun and rich, moist soils. Because it is such a common and hardy flower, it is well worth planting in your yard or garden.

Among Europeans and the colonists, asters were regarded as medicinal herbs. American Indians also found plenty of uses for asters, treating many problems. Asters are listed as the host plants for butterflies and moths Fields of goldenrod and asters provide refuge for toads, food and nesting cover for birds, a place for foxes and great horned owls to catch rabbits, voles and mice in winter.

Both natives, goldenrod and asters, are certainly worth trying in your landscape or garden. These natives make wonderful specimen plants, mass well and lend beautiful color to your late summer-autumn garden.

Wolf Administration: Prevalence Of Ticks In Pennsylvania Is High, Take Steps To Prevent Tick Bites And Tick-Borne Diseases Pennsylvania Acting Physician General Dr. Denise Johnson, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary Patrick McDonnell, and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn today met at Boyd Big Tree Preserve to discuss the high prevalence of ticks in Pennsylvania, highlight the numerous diseases that ticks can carry and remind residents of ways they can protect against tick bites.

“Ticks are most active during warmer months, which is why we typically see more instances of tick bites and cases of tick-borne diseases this time of year,” Dr. Johnson said. “This year in particular, we are seeing increases in the number of Lyme disease reports across the state, and clinicians are reporting that they are seeing more cases of other tick-borne diseases, such as anaplasmosis. As Pennsylvanians continue to spend more time outdoors, we are urging everyone to take steps to prevent tick

bites, such as wearing insect repellent, putting permethrin on their shoes, gear and clothing, and doing frequent tick checks.”

DEP collected two times more Blacklegged tick nymphs compared to last year. This is especially concerning considering the extremely small, poppy seed-like size of the nymphs.

“The increase in nymphs really drives home the message that we all need to adhere to the necessary precautions to stay safe from ticks,” said McDonnell.

The Wolf Administration reminds Pennsylvania residents and visitors of simple ways to reduce their chances of being bitten by ticks:

Lyme disease is often characterized by a bullseye-like rash, although Lyme disease may not always present itself with this obvious sign. Additional symptoms for Powassan virus may include vomiting, weakness, confusion, loss of coordination, difficulty speaking, or even seizures in severe cases. While transmission for Lyme disease from tick to human takes approximately 24 hours or more, Powassan transmission from a tick bite can happen in as little as 15 minutes. If you have symptoms that are consistent with a tick-borne disease, it is important to speak to a doctor immediately.

“It is always important to take preventative measures so you can enjoy the mental and physical health benefits of being in the outdoors, especially with regard to ticks,” Secretary Dunn said. “As tick-borne diseases are becoming more prevalent in Pennsylvania,
