Wants cameras: Antoine Fortier wants to install video cameras in the hallway.

THEFT AT HATLEBERG – WANTS CAMERAS INSTALLED Canadian exchange student at NHH Antoine Fortier lost both his jacket and his beers. Now he and several of his Hatleberg companions want video cameras installed. Audun Flatebakken red@k7bulletin.no

– On Thursday I put a couple beers in my fridge to keep them cold. But on Friday, when I was going to enjoy a cold beer after my exam, it was all gone, says Canadian exchange student Antoine Fortier. Not only did he find his beer missing from the fridge, Fortier also got his jacket stolen from his room two days after he found his beer stolen. Luckily for him, Fortier got both his jacket and his beer back. – My friends recognized my jacket being worn by another student, so we confronted him. Turns out he took both my jacket and my beer. We solved the matter, and now my fridge is filled with beer again, and I can still wear my jacket again, says Fortier. Video cameras Now the Canadian has had enough of stolen jackets and stolen beer from his fridge. Furthermore, he is not the only

student who has had things stolen. Together with several other students living in the F-block at Hatleberg, he is going to send a petition to the student welfare organization Sammen, in order to get video cameras installed. – The best solution would be to install cameras in each floor. Then we at least can know if there is someone from another floor stealing. At least I would feel secure. As of Friday 6th of October, the email to Sammen has not been sent yet, but the process is still ongoing. Open doors Norunn Johanne Økland from the Section for International Relations at NHH is the go-to responsible for students in the F-block facing trouble. She explains that installing video cameras is probably not the right solution. – The main problem is that the en-

trance door to the kitchen as well as the main doors to the blocks are unlocked. It is possible to lock these doors, and if the students remember to do so, it will help a lot, says Økland. Heard it all before Økland has been working with the international and exchange students since 1993 and has experienced and heard most things. Students often come by her office to talk about their troubles and despairs. – I’ve heard stories about everything from Catholic students having sex for their first time, wondering if they should ask for marriage, to students stressing before their exams. And yes, I have heard stories of students getting everything from stereo speakers, ham, beer to boxes of shrimps stolen. This is nothing new to me, and the best solution would in my opinion just be to lock the doors to each kitchen, she says.

Økland further tells that there has been a raid of robberies the last few weeks, but it’s hard to point to a specific increase or decrease in the amounts of stealing incidents. – It’s difficult to say. There has always Not the first time: Økland says there has always been stealing.
