Slow-cooked perfection “F

amily is the most important thing,” said Jose Uriarte, owner of Gordo Burrito’s three locations. It’s a mantra he follows closely—while Jose oversees operations at the main restaurant and home kitchen, which shares a storefront with a gas station on East Eighth Street a stone’s throw from Highway 99, his brothers Carlos and Jorge run two taco trucks located at Eighth and Pine Streets and 20th Street and Park Avenue. The various locations are largely staffed by family and friends—daughter Cecilia can usually be found running the register at the main location and PA I D

Jose’s wife is also on hand most mornings. Gordo’s menu reflects the Uriarte family’s roots on Mexico’s Pacific coast, particularly in its emphasis on delectable shrimp offerings. Gordo’s full array of shrimp dishes, from tacos to tortas and nachos, are made with fresh shrimp delivered three times weekly. “We even make things not on the menu, if the customer wants,” he said, noting ultra-spicy camarones ala diabla are a favorite among those who know to ask. The menu includes a full range of Mexican favorites, including fish and steak dishes. Of particular note are their delicious pork dishes—carnitas and al pastor slow cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

TRES HOMBRES LONG BAR & GRILL

Mexican cuisine & fine tequila T

res Hombres Long Bar & Grill is a piece of history housed in one of Chico’s oldest buildings, constructed in the 1860s by Chico founder John Bidwell. In January 2013, the unique Mexican restaurant and Chico landmark celebrates its 25th anniversary at the corner of Broadway and First streets. The classy Chico favorite has a new look after a major fire forced a 10-month closure beginning in late 2009. “At 3 a.m., I got the phone call from hell,” owner Michael Thomas recalled. Through perseverance and tremendous community support, Tres re-opened stronger than ever with a new kitchen and popular 60-seat outdoor patio. The new interior provides a sophisticated yet informal atmosphere accented by dark wood furniture, giving it the feel of a Mexican beach-resort restaurant. The food is well-received—Thomas regularly hears his paella and calamari dish is the best around and the fun, open-air taco bar serves

up tasty soft tacos and quesadillas. Their homemade chips and salsa are a local favorite, twice winning CN&R’s Best of Chico. And if you’re just looking to wet your whistle, their Long Bar (stocked more than over 120 premium tequilas) specializes in margaritas, which have won Best of Chico so many times Tres has been designated a “Living Legend” by the CN&R. 100 Broadway St., Chico 342-0425 Open Su-Wed 11:30am-10pm, Th 11:30am-11 pm, Fri-Sat 11:30am-midnight

Whether you’re playing pool, enjoying a meal or relaxMarsha Rolfe and Wyatt Price ing at the bar, you’ll PA I D

On weekends you can catch live rock and blues bands from the local scene, and the End Zone hosts charity fundraising events for Wings of Eagles and St. Jude intermittently throughout the year. But the real draw is the menu, which includes appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, prime rib, fish and chips and fish taco house specials. Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For someone looking to catch the game over drinks and quality food, the End Zone is a safe bet. 250 Cohasset Rd., Chico 899-7070 Open weekdays 9am-11pm, Sa 9am-11pm, Su 9am-9pm

Warm, inviting ambience The restaurant features stylish décor throughout two large dining rooms, a glass-enclosed garden room, a bar with expanded seating and a myriad of beers, wines and martini options and a spacious outdoor patio with seating enough for large parties and wedding receptions. However, the real gem will be the chef’s private table room, which Jones says will be perfect for marriage proposals or other intimate celebrations. Jones will personally serve guests at the chef’s table, incorporating their favorite ingredients into a custom four-course meal with paired wine. As for the service, the staff has a distinctly familial quality—Jones’ father, Gary Jones, Sr., adds an experienced touch in the kitchen and his energetic sister Noelle Miller wears multiple hats as floor manager and server. Together, they take the greatest care to prepare and serve Chico the highestquality meals. hen seeking inspiration for menu items, Cafe Coda owner Eric Danielli is grateful to call California his home. “Culinarily speaking, I feel like we can get away with just about anything,” Danielli said. “California’s unique cultural and geographical diversity gives us access to so many quality ingredients and our customers are always willing to try something new.” Coda’s menu offers an eclectic blend of both traditional and unique recipes with influences ranging from Mexican to Mediterranean food. Many customers regard the Coda Benedict—two poached eggs on toasted parmesan foccacia bread with baby spinach and smoked ham smothered in Bearnaise sauce—as the best Eggs Benedict in town. “We strive to provide excellent, unpretentious food in a casual, comfortable environment,” Danielli said. “If dining at Cafe Coda feels more like dining at home with friends and family than dining in a

typical restaurant, then I believe we’ve done just that. This is a special place to me and my staff. I’m so happy that so many loyal customers agree.” Coda also enjoys a reputation as one of the best local music venues in town, with an everchanging lineup of talented local and touring musicians performing two or three nights a week. New owners strive to preserve special touch Kelly Vadney

n order to ensure the continued success of Red Tavern, a Chico institution for 15 years, new owners Kelly and Michael Vadney committed to keeping things largely as they are when they assumed ownership in mid-August. “We kept all of the staff, they’re pretty much what makes the restaurant run,” Kelly said. “We still communicate with the old owners [Craig Thomas and Maria Venturino, who also own Farm Star Pizza] almost daily, and they’ve been a great help during the transition.” “It’s been relatively easy for us to take over

because everything was in place,” Michael said. “We will continue Red Tavern’s tradition of buying local, high-quality seasonal ingredients and having our excellent, creative kitchen staff transform them into delicious dishes.” The newlywed couple recently relocated to Chico from Huntington Beach. Mike grew up in the Vina area and wanted to get back to his roots and Kelly has 13 years experience in the restaurant business. The Red Tavern is known for its ever-evolving menu focused on fresh, local ingredients and highend American and Mediterranean cuisine. One of the few changes the Vadney’s have instituted is the addition of several small, $8 to $10 dishes; Kelly said she hopes this will make the Red Tavern more than a special occasion destination, but also a place to grab a glass of wine and a bite on any day. These new additions include bacon-wrapped prawns, baked brie and a tomato tart creation from Thomas’ original Red Tavern menu. 1250 Esplanade, Chico 894-3463 Open Mon-Sa at 5pm

hen Josh Snider attended Chico State several years ago, he felt downtown Chico’s bar scene left plenty to be desired in the realm of customer service. “You were always treated like you owe them when you walk in, they’re bending your ID, they’re questioning you, they’re treating you like part of the masses,” he said. So when Snider and fellow bartender Josh Marks purchased Bella’s Sports Pub a little over three years ago, they committed to creating a welcoming atmosphere. “We try to be the friendliest bar in Chico,” Marks said. The pair tended the bar at Bella’s through their college careers and shared managerial duties shortly before becoming owners. Since the purchase, Snider and Marks have made some notable design changes—namely, replacing the carpet with hardwood floors—and overhauled the menu. “I worked with S&S Produce to help build our menu with local products and our own touch,” Snider said. 16 DINING GUIDE

Their efforts have resulted in arguably the best chicken wings in Chico and also a fantastic array of gourmet burgers. For Snider, the food is what sets Bella’s apart in the downtown bar scene, which often settles with “throwing some frozen stuff in the deep fryer.” Bella’s attracts a mix of college students and local sports fans typically between 21 and 35 years old, but the crowds never reach a fever pitch. The bar offers 10 beers on draft and a full selection of liquor. 134 Broadway St. 893-5253 Open 11am-2am Tu-Sa, 11am-midnight Su-Mon
