Curious About
Cannabis? if you're considering buying legal recreational marijuana, you're in luck — sacramento has a thriving dispensary scene
S
ome 7.9 million Californians voted to approve recreational use of marijuana in 2016. While medicinal cannabis has been legal in California for over 20 years, we are now entering a whole new world of legitimacy. On Jan. 1, 2018, shopping for cannabis won't be any different from selecting that perfect red wine for a dinner party. Relaxing after work might include a low-carb dinner, some yoga — and a few tokes of a your favorite indica strain. But new and returning cannabis users are going to feel like strangers in a strange land. Many Californians have never been inside a modern dispensary. Others may have tried cannabis “back in the day” but have questions about potency levels and the myriad products available today. Whatever their experience level, Sacramento residents who are ready to try recreational cannabis are in luck: Sacramento has a well-established cannabis community thanks to medicinal use. It’s also one of a handful of cities that will be ready for recreational sales on Jan. 1, 2018. “Sacramento is on the forefront of a city thinking pro-cannabis, so it is creating first-movers in the industry,” says Grant Rosenquist, chief financial officer at
WHAT TO EXPECT
Capitol Compliance Management, a local cannabis consulting and management firm. “I’m hoping someday Sacramento can be known as California’s cannabis capital, like it’s known for farm-to-fork.” Capitol Compliance Management is leading the way in developing
guidelines for marijuana businesses looking to receive a temporary license. Assisting cannabis dispensaries and manufacturers in complying with these ever-evolving laws is one of the many services offered by Capitol Compliance Management.
Capitol Compliance Management is leading the way in developing Sacramento as a hub of professional cannabis business. Sacramento as a hub of professional cannabis business. CCM’s regulatory specialists currently work with nine local dispensaries to implement standard business practices while making sure businesses are compliant with new state laws. Consumers can trust that shopping at one of these CCM-affiliated dispensaries will mean a professional, consistent experience that complies with laws designed to ensure the quality and safety of cannabis. And there are a lot of laws. State regulators have released 276 pages of
Compliance will be everything in the era of recreational cannabis. But that's for the dispensary owners (and CCM) to worry about. For consumers, they get to relax and have fun trying new products. When they visit any of the dispensaries listed here (see page 10), they will get the customer service, quality and selection they would expect from any retail establishment thanks to CCM. Adds Rosenquist: “We aim to set the standard, bringing dispensaries and all cannabis businesses to the new era of legitimacy.”

Responsibly tips for enjoying cannabis safely
T
the state of California will officially legalize the sale, growth and consumption of cannabis and cannabis-related products for recreational use on January 1, 2018. Party time, baby, let’s do this! But before you stock up on Doritos and blacklight posters, take note: Just because cannabis is legal now doesn’t mean that we’re living in a lawless world. To quote the immortal Vincent Vega from Pulp Fiction: “You can’t walk into a restaurant, roll a joint and start puffing away.” Former budtender and dispensary manager Paul Clemons of CCM has a few suggestions for rookie or returning cannabis users, beyond the obvious caveats against public use (see Vincent Vega quote above) and smoking-anddriving (don’t do it).
Ask questions.
Do some research.
CCM dispensaries strive to be beginnerfriendly, educating new customers with greeters and tours. And no one who visits will be made to feel dumb for not knowing their indicas from their sativas. “Ask as many questions as you want,” says Clemons. “It’s about building trust with your budtender, so they can help.”
The sheer selection of cannabis products available to the modern consumer — everything from flowers and vapes to edibles and beverages (don't forget tinctures and lotions!) — can be somewhat intimidating for newcomers. “Make sure to do some sort of research at home, so you have an idea of what you want, or else it can be overwhelming,” says Clemons.
Know your limits. Pretty common sense advice, but newbies may not know the varying strengths and effects of cannabis products, and returning users may not realize that THC levels have skyrocketed in recent years. Let’s not Maureen Dowd this thing, people. The California Department of Public Health recommends starting with less than a single serving (10 mg of THC). Remember: You can always take more, but once it’s in your body, you can’t take less. Start with a crumb, not the whole cookie.
Be open to anything. New cannabis customers will be faced with a bounty of options with a variety of practical uses, whether it’s stress relief or spicing up a James Bond marathon, so it’s important to stay open-minded. “A lot of it with cannabis is trial and error,” says Clemons. “Something that might work for you might not work for me, and vice versa.”

anager Vanessa Gainer says when new customers see AMC’s wide selection of products, the reaction is the same. “Some people come in and they’re blind-sided, like a kid in a candy store, it’s so different,” she says. “That’s when budtenders can take them through and answer their questions.” AMC takes pride in their selection of concentrates, including Paper Planes brand. “Their shatters are phenomenal,” says Gainer. “Their consistency of product has never disappointed me. Paper Planes is my personal favorite.” CBDs also sell well at AMC. “Topicals, tinctures, cartridges, edibles, we even have capsules,” says Gainer. Cousin Andy’s 500mg CBD capsules look like vitamins, and work well for travelers or people who just want the medicine alone. For those who like to seriously study their choices, “it helps to look at the menu online first,” advises Gainer. Then come in and choose from their showroom full of products. “We’re ready!” she says.

ere is a one-stop-shop for customers who want their menu to be both wide and deep, starting with 60 premium flower strains, 162 extracts, 139 edibles, 19 pre-rolls and 13 topicals. “They’re a really good crew here,” says Snow, a vendor who visits dispensaries on her weekly route. “I also like the wall displays,” she says. Blonde wood panels and chrome racks show off products from some of CC101’s major brands like Nug, Edipure, Mr. Natural and Bloom Farms. One of their newest products is the Presidential brand 50/50 blunt pre-roll. Soaked in hash oil, sprinkled with kief and wrapped in hemp CBD paper, “we went to Southern California to find these,” says Assistant Manager Sara Arnold. When asked what makes her dispensary stand out, Arnold says it's customer service. “It’s a huge thing here. We’re like family.” Arnold says sometimes customers leave in such a good mood, “we had to yell, ‘Hey, you forgot your cane.’ It’s happened more than once!” It's clear CC101 wants customers to chat, ask questions and not feel rushed.

loud 9 has a friendly and fun atmosphere that is immediately disarming. But the budtenders know their products and consider themselves particular experts on the emergence of CBD products. “When people want to talk with us about CBDs, it’s usually for pain management,” says Cloud 9’s David Smith. “During their down time, our crew is proactive, especially with CBDs. They study on their own.” While not a cure-all for everything, getting expertise from employees who are patients themselves is one way Cloud 9 finds the right medicine for its customers. Spliffin Pure vapes are one of Cloud 9’s exclusive brands. This Southern California company offers 80 percent THC cartridges in classic strains like Jack Herer, Super Lemon Haze and the frequent cup-winner Tangie, a variation on the original Tangerine Dream. Originally known for their budget strains, Cloud 9 now has a larger selection that will appeal to everybody. They carry a lot of brands in general, because, as Smith says, “people are very brand loyal. When they find a product that works for them, they want to stay with it.”

ith perhaps the coolest name ever for a dispensary, Doctor’s Orders should be your regular if you’re on the north side of town. Small but mighty, they stock an impressive number of flower strains, edibles and over 150 concentrate options. “I like to suggest the Cocoa Meds and HI-FI edibles, just for potency and their price per milligram,” says Assistant Manager Eddy Montalvo. Among the most trusted products on the market, these two are popular for their consistent quality. When asked about new restrictions on recreational edibles to 10 mg, Montalvo says, “I know Korova is already on that. They have these little 10 mg mini-cookies, they look cool.” Known for its reasonably priced flower strains, Doctor’s Orders also offers an expensive one called Truffles. Infused with THC concentrate and rolled in kief powder, you’ll be searching for every dropped crumb of these exotic buds. They’re strong and flavorful, yet last a long time. The crew at Doctor’s Orders is like family. “We want to look out for you and let you feel comfortable,” Montalvo says.

lorin Wellness Center is one of Sacramento’s oldest and most popular dispensaries, and well stocked with 36 flower strains, 30 CBD products and 139 edibles on the menu. Television monitors and clean white display cases await inside. The products can be viewed up close while waiting. FWC’s budtenders often receive special training from manufacturers, and they are happy to pass the knowledge on to customers. FWC’s flower strains range from $50 to $15 per eighth. Manager Boby Inthavongxay says that the price difference “is mostly between outdoor versus indoor grown." One of FWC’s popular products is the elegantly designed HMBLT measured-dose vape pen system, which comes in four categories: Bliss, Calm, Relief and Sleep. Each pen holds exactly 50 doses of oil, and can be turned in for a future discount when empty. Every April 20 and July 10, FWC hosts a pop-up market in their parking lot, where several manufacturers bring product samples. With a food truck and music, these events have a party-like atmosphere.

ith its brushed aluminum and white marble counters, the showroom at Golden Health and Wellness could fool you. Their budget-shelf flowers are more popular than the top-shelf strains. Certified Skunk Pineapple Jack is a low-priced sativa with the taste and potency of a top-shelf strain. Besides saving money, “some people can’t handle the higher quality flower, because they like to smoke a whole joint,” says Manager Trevor Mitzel, “so the budget strains help that out as well.” Other popular products include California’s Finest premium pre-roll five-packs. Individually wrapped, they come in cardboard boxes so cool you’ll want to collect them. Strains include Jimmy Hendrix Purple Haze and Nick Diaz Recovery Indica (named for the Stockton-born fighter). But heavy metal fans will insist on Motorhead Kush, personally endorsed by the band’s late frontman, Lemmy Kilmister. Budtenders at GHW know enough to tell a customer when something might not work best for them. “That’s when the trust comes into play,” says Mitzel, who adds that GHW employees "take the time to help, not to sell.”

asy to locate on the southeast edge of the city, House of Organics is unique for its all-organic line of flower strains. “Our Gorilla Glues and OG strains almost always sell out,” says Manager John Yepiskoposyan. Their top-shelf flowers are among the most popular products. “We managed to pick up three types of cannabis that we had read about but never been able to find in the Bay Area,” says Kris, a customer from San Francisco. Among House of Organic’s more unique products, the long-lasting Mr. Natural Cannagar is a must-see. This 10-gram premium cannabis cigar comes wrapped in a sifted tricome blanket and premium rosin coat. “Oh yeah, this is a party cigar,” says Yepiskoposyan. “But you can store it in its glass container, then get it out again and again. It lasts forever.” Staff meets every week to go over new products and changes coming on Jan. 1. “We expect recreational buyers to have a lot of questions,” says Yepiskoposyan, “and we want to be as professional as we can in answering them.” Customers can also learn a lot on the website, which has a updated menu and informational blogs.

udtenders at SAS strive to know patients’ needs and are proud of their highestrated reviews. “We like to build special relationships with customers,” says SAS manager Tanner Bueghly. SAS is known for its selection of concentrates and for the “dab-rigs” used to smoke them. Compared to spreading concentrates onto a joint or over a pipe bowl, Bueghly says “dabbing is easier, once you get used to it.” SAS budtenders are happy to explain how dabbing works, and how to get started with a simple home “dab-rig” or portable device. Flo OG live resin sugar looks like amber quartz and has an overwhelming smell and flavor. “The process starts with raw bud,” says Bueghly. The live resin process preserves a living plant’s terpene profile without the grassy taste. When smoked in a dab rig, the flavor will make this a favorite. Habit sparkling beverages are a popular seller at SAS. “They’re just like soda, with no pot taste,” said Bueghly. “They’re fantastic.” SAS has event days on 4/20, 7/10, Black Friday and Christmas, with vendors’ samples, special deals, and a barbecue.

ith budtenders who know many of their customers by first name, THC has the feel of an old-fashioned neighborhood corner market. “We’re small, and never in a hurry,” says Kareem Hamdy about THC’s Fruitridge Road location. THC carries many of the Mr. Natural products, including Chocolate Thai sativa flower, which has a heavenly aroma. Tested at 28 percent THC, it is their most potent flower, “yet very uplifting for an indica,” says Paul, a customer. “And I’m normally a sativa guy.” “I like the Cheeba Chews,” says Hamdy of their selection of CBDs. These tiny boxed chews come in different strengths in both CBD and THC at a great price point. You can make a purchase and dash off, or linger for a few minutes to ask questions. Asked what to recommend to a new recreational customer, revisiting cannabis for the first time in decades, Hamdy says: “Something lighter in smoke or a lighter vape cartridge.” Hamdy is excited to see what 2018 brings and looks forward to the diversity of a new group of customers. “We’ll be ready,” he says.
