Totally Tubular
Surprisingly, the beauty industry has been a little slow to jump on the tubing mascara bandwagon, but we’re in for a big shift this year. Want brow-grazing lashes and the easiest removal process ever? Hop on board. Brittany Burhop Fallon
How It’s Different
Though tubing mascara isn’t new—a company called Blinc pioneered the technology in 1995—more brands are finally taking notice. “Unlike conventional mascaras, tubing mascaras contain lightweight polymers that create a ‘tube’ around each individual lash, hence the name,” explains Karissa Bodnar, makeup artist and founder of Thrive Causemetics. “These formulas build and extend beyond the natural lash for maximum length without weighing the lashes down. It’s truly a lash extension–like ef fect. The best tubing mascaras are also longlasting, smudge-proof and flake-resistant.”
Why We Love It
Color Theory
“One big trend we’ll be seeing this summer is colored mascara,” says Davy. “In addition to black, our Half Magic tubing mascara comes in violet and teal [as seen on the opposite page].” Thrive Causemetics recently expanded its tubing mascara collection to include limited-edition shades purple, pink and green. “Each shade is designed to bring out the natural eye color: Green brings out the multidimensional gold tones in hazel eyes, purple brightens green eyes and pink enhances cool blue eyes,” says Bo dnar. “They’re great for someone who is just starting to explore adding color to their routine and might be intimidated by colorful eyeshadow or eyeliner.”
Not only do we love the lengthening benefits, but also the removal process. “One of the best parts about tubing mascara is that it’s extremely easy to remove,” says Bodnar. Each tube slides right off with warm water. That’s right, no makeup remover needed. You can finally walk out of your shower without raccoon eyes. Donni Davy, makeup artist and cofounder of Half Magic Beauty, agrees. “The major advantage with tubingmascara is that you never get raccoon eyes,” she explains. “Although tubing formulas are not waterproof, they don’t smudge throughout the day. Even if you have long lashes that touch your skin, this type of mascara will never transfer color.”
Bodnar adds that tubing mascara also doesn’t damage the lashes or irritate the eyes because there’s no rubbing or tugging at sensitive skin during the removal. For contact lens wearers, no longer needing to scrub your eyes repeatedly each night is a welcome change. It’s a reprieve for the delicate skin under the eyes, too.
Davy predicts we’ll see more tubing mascaras coming to market soon. “Once people fall in love with tubing formulas, it’s really hard to go back to regular mascara. I think the strip lash is losing popularity, too, and those consumers will be looking for other options with a similar effect.”
INSIDE TIP
With most traditional mascaras, you can freshen up your lash look with additional coats throughout the day. “However, if you apply another coat of tubing mascara to an already-dry layer, you’ll start to get a spikier look,” says Davy. “I have never felt like my tubing mascara needed to be freshened up though. Because it doesn’t smudge, it has that fresh, ‘just applied’ look to it, even after wearing it all day. That is, unless you sobbed your eyes out or got stuck in a rainstorm.”

HIGHNOTES
We’re amid a fragrance reawakening. Searches for vanilla perfume were up 38.2 percent in 2023 over the year prior and are predicted to keep surging. Signature scents are making a comeback. Perfumers are busier than ever dreaming up the next award-winning elixir. Here, an inside look at their creative process and key insights about noteworthy trends.
BY: BRITTANY BURHOP FALLONA “NOSE” KNOWS
NOTE: NOTE:
SNIFF TEST
Perfumers, also referred to as “noses,” are the olfactive brains behind the fragrances we know and love. The creative process of developing the “juice” inside the beautiful bottles lining our vanities is a laborious one. “Ninety-five percent of the perfumes on the market today are basically made by four big, international companies—mine included,” says Rodrigo Flores-Roux, vice president perfumer at Givaudan. (He’s the nose behind Clinique Happy and dozens of others.)
A brand, designer or celebrity brings their idea, or brief, to a handful of fragrance composition houses, where perfumers then interpret the brief. “Oftentimes several iterations are created before the brand selects the winning fragrance from among the competing companies,” Flores-Roux explains. “It’s a long, nerve-racking process. It can last months, or sometimes years. I always say, ‘The perfumer’s job equates to 99 percent rejection and 1 percent absolute glory.’”
To determine which notes work best together in a fragrance, Bérénice Watteau, a fine fragrance perfumer at dsm-firmenich, says perfumers have approximately 1,700 raw materials to play with. “One note is one single raw material, like orange. We use notes to create accords, which are groups of ingredients like orange, jasmine and vanilla,” explains Flores-Roux. “Every single perfume is a succession of accords: top notes, heart notes and base notes. When you spray it, you smell everything together, but the first thing to evaporate is the top notes.”
Fragrances also vary in intensity. “Parfum or perfume (EDP) is the most intense, and cologne is next,” says Linda Levy, president of The Fragrance Foundation. “An eau de toilette (EDT) is the lightest form.” In terms of olfactive differences, Watteau explains that an EDT will be fresher and more citrusy. “An EDP will be creamier, a bit darker and more enveloping. It will have more dimension.” And if you see a fragrance labeled “absolu” or “absolute,” that is an EDP with even more intensity. “This year, Spate data shows that consumers will prioritize benefits like intensity and long-lasting when it comes to their fragrance,” says Yarden Horwitz, cofounder of Spate.
PULSE POINTS
Three fragrance trends to keep your eye on this year
TREND:
VANILLA TOPS THE CHARTS
“There is something really big happening with vanilla right now,” says Watteau.
Flores-Roux agrees, noting that there are many different types of vanilla as well.
“When you think about a vanilla bean, it doesn’t really smell like sweet, fluffy, yellow Häagen-Dazs,” he explains.
“They smell very leathery, very smoky and very oily.
That’s why we have musky vanillas, solar vanillas— meaning they have a sunny, be achy vibe—and also burnt, smoky vanillas.”
The ingredient is also a very expensive commodity right now. “We’re hitting historical highs for prices per kilo of vanilla, and I think that’s another reason why everybody is looking at it.”
TREND:
GENDERLESS IS N’T GO ING AN YWHERE
Gender fluidity is becoming the norm, which is evident with each of Gucci’s new additions to its beloved Alchemist Garden collection (including its latest, The He art of Leo EDP). “Many fragrances are evolving from traditional labels of men’s or women’s to universal appeal for all gender identities,” says Levy. “With this, the oldfashioned label of cologne is no longer resonating.”
Wat teau agrees. “Cologne has become primarily as sociated with men in the U.S., but historically, it’s genderless. In France, cologne is an olfactive category based on citrus notes with a super fresh quality.” Jo Malone London has become synonymous with unisex colognes since its U.S. debut in 1999.
TREND:
SWEET SCENTS ARE A CROWD FAVORITE
“G ourmand is a sweet, warm, comforting type of fragrance that is very popular,” says Watteau. Think praline or sugary, candy-like notes. “The category originated in 1992 with Thierry Mugler’s Angel, and is here to stay,” adds Flores-Roux. In Spate’s 2023 Fragrance Trends Report, the company highlighted the growing fascination with gourmand and food-inspired fragrances. “Vanilla emerged as the top choice among consumers, closely followed by the notes of nutty pistachio, and boozy bourbons and champagnes,” says Horwitz.
NOTE:
Ever wonder why some brands make “sister” fragrances to some of your favorite scents? For example, Dior’s new woody-floral Miss Dior Parfum has been reinvented by Francis Kurkdjian to celebrate the fragrance’s iconic history dating back to 1947. CHANEL’s Chance Eau Fraîche, also a woody-floral, is a reimagined version of the original CHANEL Chance that launched in 2002. “These are called flankers, which describes the reiteration of a successful launch,” says Flores-Roux. Watteau adds, “Creating a flanker is a really interesting exercise for a perfumer. We get to put a new spin on a fragrance people love, and sometimes, that fragrance has become an emblem in the history of perfumery.”

by RowanLynamMICROCURRENT
Microcurrent is designed to provide painless electrical stimulation to lift and tighten the face, neck and body. With a host of options promising to work out your face, what can you actually expect in terms of results?
TECH BREAKDOWN
Our bodies have a subtle electrical current; in fact, the brain produces enough power on its own to light a 15-watt light bulb. Microcurrent devices mimic that gentle level of electrical current to stimulate the facial muscles in order to lift, firm and tone them.
“Microcurrent technology works by sending low-level, painless electrical impulses to the muscles in the skin to stimulate them,” explains Miami de rmatologist Anna Chacon, MD. “These impulses mimic the body’s natural bio-electrical field and help to ‘re-educate’ the muscles to tone and lift them. The technology also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which are the proteins responsible for the skin’s elasticity and strength. As a result, signs of aging are reduced.”
WHAT THE SCIENCE SAYS
According to New York dermatologist Marina Peredo, MD, we’ve been using versions of this electric stimulation for a long time. “Back in the day, before we had things like EMSCULPT, we would basically place electrodes on the patient that would force muscle contractions,” she explains. “It was kind of a lazy person’s workout, but it took several sessions to see results and it could quickly become too expensive.” The good news is, there are many studies on the effectiveness of microcurrent when it’s used traditionally, so we know the idea of electrical muscle stimulation works and has a beneficial outcome.
AT-HOME VS. IN-OFFICE
Dr. Chacon explains that the primary difference between microcurrent treatments administered in-office and at-home devices is the level of power. “Professional treatments are performed by trained clinicians who can adjust the device’s settings according to the specific needs and skin condition of each patient,” she says. “They also use professional-grade machines, which are more powerful and can penetrate deeper into the skin.” These treatments provide results with no downtime, but to maintain them, you’ll need to abide by a fairly consistent schedule.
“Microcurrent technology works by sending lowlevel, painless electrical impulses to the muscles in your skin to stimulate them.”
—Anna Chacon, MD
New York dermatologist Elaine Kung, MD says that unfortunately, there aren’t many strong studies that focus solely on the effect microcurrent has on signs of aging. Longterm studies showing effectiveness on wrinkles are still lacking, so the science isn’t considered a slam dunk. “Microcurrent’s anti-aging potential is tantalizing, but consider it a promising newcomer, not a seasoned star,” she says. “While some studies wink at its effectiveness, more research is needed before it steals the spotlight.”
While at-home devices may be less powerful, they are readily available for you to use whenever you have time. As a trade-off, you’ll need to use them more regularly. “You basically need to use these at-home devices every day,” Dr. Peredo says. “If not every day, then every other day. You really need to commit in order to maintain the results.”
If you already find it hard to make time for your skin-care routine, microcurrent may not be the best option for you. “I think it would be easier if you only had to use the device once a week,” says Dr. Peredo. “But I had a device in my office and never found the time to use it on myself.”
That said, if your skin-care regimen is your favorite part of the day or you’re committing to taking more time for yourself, a device like NuFACE TRINITY+ is an excellent addition to a routine.
TAKE YOUR FACE TO THE GYM
If you’ve ever lifted weights, you know your arms tend to look better right after you’ve finished a good workout. The same idea holds for microcurrent. The lifting and toning benefits these devices offer are instantaneous and significant. But just like a gym membership, you have to actually show up and do the work for that result to last.
Most in-office treatments will last close to an hour, but your at-home device will likely recommend you take the short, but frequent route.
The latest device from FOREO, the BEAR 2, recommends as little as five minutes per session to gain lifting and toning benefits.
Just like the gym is great for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, using a microcurrent device is a great way to enhance the benefits of your other skin-care treatments.
“I think this can easily be an add-on to other treatments like Morpheus8,” Dr. Peredo explains. “Microcurrent can be used as a maintenance treatment at home to keep your results looking good between treatments.”
“Microcurrent can be used as a maintenance treatment at home to keep your results looking good in-between treatments.”
—Marina Peredo, MD
THE PRE-EVENT FACIAL
Because the effects of in-office microcurrent can be so dramatic, come with no downtime and last upwards of a month, the treatment makes a great pre-event option to tone and tighten the face and neck. This is one red-carpet treatment you don’t need to plan ahead for, as the increase in blood circulation leaves you with a healthy glow. It makes for the perfect last-minute boost before a special day.
Additionally, this treatment is safe for all skin types and can benefit any age group. “Microcurrent stimulation has gained popularity because it is a relatively safe and noninvasive therapy,” Dr. Kung explains. That doesn’t mean this treatment is universally safe, however, as it isn’t recommended for those with epilepsy or pacemakers, or those who are pregnant. “It’s also a good idea to consult with a board-certified dermatologist or other skin-care professional who can provide personalized advice based on your skin type and condition,” Dr. Chacon adds.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Microcurrent is still making waves in the beauty industry, and now it’s also being used as a potential way to deliver skin-care products deeper into the skin.
“The beauty industry wants to apply the success of transdermal drug delivery for chronic wounds to transdermal delivery of useful, skinhealthy ingredients like antioxidants with microcurrent devices,” Dr. Kung explains. “For example, Medicube’s Age-R Booster-H device and Nu Skin’s Facial Spa toning device are using low-voltage stimulation coupled with the use of their anti-aging products.”
There are already special serums made to pair with microcurrent treatments, and they usually contain electrolytes to increase the impact of the microcurrent. We expect this trend to continue, as microcurrent becomes one part “face gym,” one part skin-care delivery system.
At-Home Devices to Try:
The best of microcurrent in the palm of your hand.
“What’s so great about TheraFace Pro (therabody.com, $399), is that the allin-one, multitasking device is capable of six facial treatments, ranging from skin-toning microcurrent to rejuvenating LED light therapy. And, you can add on the power duo set of hot and cold rings with temperature options. Having a tool like this that does it all is so handy and convenient, which is a must, especially when you’re on the move or short of valuable kit storage space.”

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
by Rowan LynamThe Good, The Bad + The Ugly
Ready for a beauty revolution?
Dive into the future as AI reshapes the industry, offering personalized experiences that go beyond the ordinary. Click now to embark on a journey where tech meets glam!”
—ChatGPT
That quote to the left is how ChatGPT would introduce this article. Using a clear prompt and an entire internet’s-worth of information to simulate a style of writing that dominates beauty and fashion outlets, artificial intelligence could have produced this entire article.
But you would have been able to tell, wouldn’t you?
While we might be a ways off from convincingly well-written AI novels, the current reality is that beauty brands are experimenting with and actively employing elements of generative artificial intelligence up and down the market chain, whether you’re noticing or not.
The impact of AI on the aesthetic industry is still unfolding. From facealtering filters and makeup-correcting apps to same-face syndrome, plagiarism and racial bias, the world of beauty is contending with the ripple-effects of AI right now. And with distrust of this technology high among consumers, experts are trying to find the right role for AI to play in their content, products, customer service and overall approach.
“How an AI is trained is really critical. That means accounting for diversity, skin tones and face shapes across the board.”
—Lamia Drew, Estée Lauder

The Good
The name of the game these days is personalization. We want our products to be bespoke and intuitive, and brands are using AI to meet our expectations. For example, getting machine learning to process your perfect hair-care formula based on your hair type and lifestyle, or analyzing your likely skin concerns based on a well-lit selfie.
This kind of generative learning is also a critical part of creating accessibility tech like Estée Lauder’s Voice-Enabled Makeup Assistant (VMA) App, which can give detailed feedback on the user’s makeup application. “The visually impaired community expressed a real desire for independence when it came to applying their makeup and touching it up throughout the day,” explains Lamia Drew, Estée Lauder’s global director of inclusive technology and accessibility. “And creating that was
probably the hardest challenge my team has ever had. This is pioneering technology that uses machine learning, smart mirror technology and voice instruction to assist the user in their makeup application.”
Even noticeably AI-generated content can be positive when it’s marked as being produced through machine learning. “AI can be used positively to increase awareness in our field,” says Tucson, AZ plastic surgeon Raman Mahabir, MD. “We used it to create a poem about DIEP flap breast reconstruction and it did an outstanding job. We then used that AI-generated poem as part of our breast reconstruction awareness (BRA) day campaign.”
DID YOU KNOW?
A study conducted by Europol, the law enforcement agency of the European Union, predicts that as much as 90 percent of all internet content could be AI-generated by 2026.
The Bad
Do all influencers look kind of alike to you?
That isn’t your imagination. The proliferation of AI filters on social media platforms have led to what many call “Same-Face Syndrome” or “Influencer Face Syndrome,” described by journalist Jia Tolentino in 2019 as “a young face, of course, with poreless skin and plump, high cheekbones. It has catlike eyes and long, cartoonish lashes; it has a small, neat nose and full, lush lips.”
And plastic surgeons have noticed its rising popularity. “We are seeing a lot of this look now, which is defined by its over-exaggerated proportions,” says El Paso, TX plastic surgeon Ozan Sozer, MD. “And this can be harmful in the long-term.”
According to Dr. Mahabir, more and more time in-office is spent managing patient expectations. “While AI filters may be driving an increase in demand for plastic surgery, they are also driving somewhat unrealistic expectations. We spend more time managing expectations now than before as a result,” he explains. That extra time in the consult is ultimately spent wisely, often resulting in a change of heart from the patient. “Even when they come in asking for a ‘filter-like’ result, once you educate them and really spend the time with them, they realize they don’t really want to look fake, which is often the end result when you try to recreate an AI filter on a real person.”
“Plastic surgery is an art form,” Dr. Sozer says. “And I think we do best when we respect the beauty of the individual and the ideals that have been successful for centuries. Trendy shifts are likely to change, but classical descriptions of beauty that arrive naturally in all cultures are always going to be beautiful.”
The Ugly
And then there’s the racism.
There are dozens of news stories diving into the ways in which AI-generated content fails, and even harms, society. AI-driven algorithms have been caught exhibiting racist and sexist behaviors regurgitated from the worst parts of the internet, prioritizing white applicants for jobs and classifying women as “homemakers.”
In 2018, then MIT graduate student Joy Buolamwini began researching racial bias in these programs after discovering that common facial recognition software didn’t recognize her face at all. She had to wear a white mask for the program to work, and she later found that algorithms across several major companies, including Google and Amazon, have error rates as high as 30 percent for the faces of black women. For comparison, the error rate for the faces of white men was only 1 percent.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. “How an AI is trained is really critical,” Drew explains. “When creating VMA, we used thousands of images all across the Fitzpatrick scale to train the AI so that it could be capable of analyzing any face. That means accounting for diversity, skin tones and face shapes across the board. By the time we had a product to test, we had used another 50,000 images to help fine-tune the algorithm.”
The extra work was necessary.
“We knew we needed this to be truly inclusive because these products and systems should work perfectly for everyone who uses them,” Drew says. “That’s our definition of accessibility. That’s our definition of luxury.”

“There are three products I’ve recently started using. First, I gotta give it to my girl Kenya Moore. Her Kenya Moore Hair Care Shampoo and Conditioner are amazing. Some shampoos leave my hair dry and brittle, but hers really moisturizes. Second, the NEOCUTIS Bio Serum Firm. It is a moisturizer that rejuvenates the skin. My friend is a dermatologist and she recommended it to me. My third current must is Kopari Rose Gold Body Glow. A makeup artist and friend used it on me, and I had to get my own; I loved it so much.”

At 73 years old, Tantoo Cardinal is one of the most respected and beloved indigenous actresses in Hollywood. Aside from Martin Scorsese’s latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, she has appeared in more than 120 film and television projects throughout her four-decade career, including Dances With Wolves,Legends of the Fall,Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, and most recently, Marvel’s Echo.
When I started out, I could have told myself that I was beautiful, but I didn’t believe it. Then there was a point in my 50s, when I looked back and just cried because I realized, “Oh my God, I was beautiful.” I had no idea when people would tell me so. I just never took it to heart that you are beautiful just as you are. I’m willing to accept it now, and it’s a 70-year-old beauty. It’s not a 20-yearold or even a 50-year-old. It’s a 70-year-old. So, you know, it’s about time that I accepted it. I have accepted this particular beauty in both my life and my work.
On a regular daily basis, I feel most beautiful when I’ve done the right things for myself, and for my body. When my hair is clean, or in terms of exercise, I’ve done my stretches and I feel my body being limber and flexible. That’s when I feel the best. When I am headed to a public event, then I feel best when I’ve had my glam people, whom I trust, around me and getting me ready to go.
Being in films that represent so much is kind of my path—telling those stories that haven’t been told or haven’t been told properly. This movie was kind of a shock, I suppose, for a lot of people to realize that this is a
part of our collective history. Even though a lot of people know that Indigenous people have been hard done by America in the past, there are still some who think that we got what we deserved.
Ultimately, I’m hoping that it will open more funding for our storytellers to be able to tell things properly. Movies like Killers of the Flower Moon are helpful for generating curiosity and new funding opportunities that we can use to tell authentic stories that can be shared with generations to come. It’s been a testament to the preservation of creation, which is powerful and its own kind of beauty.
I think it’s getting better. I know that the dandelion will continue to grow out through the pavement, and I trust that there’s going to be work for me.
There are all kinds of amazing women out there who are still working, and it shows a wisdom seeping through the industry—that older women have a lot left to give
In the indigenous world, the older we get, the more we have to offer. The mothers and grandmothers hold great power, honor, respect, service and wisdom—it’s built right into our culture. It’s just this business that has to decide to catch up!
Getting older means I don’t have to be in as many places. I’ve done a certain amount of work, and my work speaks for itself; I’m not even online! Another big thing about aging is that many things don’t bother you the same way they used to; I like that.
“You are beautiful. You are beautiful just as you are.”

× Fitness Focus
“Right now, strength training is super important to me. Not only for my physical fitness, but also for my mental health. I do it about three or four times a week. It’s a workout that really makes me do something hard. Also, I’ve worked on my technique, so I know what I’m doing and I feel like I am really accomplishing something. But I’m also not killing myself in the process, which I did in the past doing those really intense HIIT workouts. The strength training and lowerimpact cardio has been a really great combination for me.”
× Whole Approach
“I finally think I understand that wellness is a whole, and that includes using a cold plunge, sauna and supplementation. I think different supplements—the peptides, the B12—are amazing. Then, of course, sleep. Sleep is so important to me; I’m narcoleptic, so sleep is something that I’m always needing more of.”
× Peace Maker
“Trying to protect my peace has been a huge part of my wellness journey during the past few years. I am constantly learning how to do that better. Honestly, there were times in the past where going to the gym did more harm than good; I would physically and mentally wear myself out. I have done a lot of work really trying to understand what my nervous system needs. I am really working hard on getting out of that ‘fight or flight’ mentality.”
× Body Work
“Don’t get me wrong, I love a good spa day, but I look at it as more of a treat. What I do incorporate every week is physical therapy—doing a lot of manual work. I am into that ‘hurts so good’ type of manual massage to really get into those places where I find myself being super tense. I had a pretty bad fall when I was young and that led to me having to work with some chro=nic neck and back pain. I’ve done the chiropractic route, I’ve done acupuncture, I’ve done all those things, and I think they’re all great at certain times, but right now physical therapy has been so great for me. I’ve actually felt the best with my body than I have in a really long time by keeping that maintenance.”
×
Face Forward
“Of course I love getting a facial every now and then! They are so nice. I’ve had some issues with my skin lately, so I’ve been trying to be really gentle with it and I haven’t been getting too many right now... but a good massage and physical therapy does wonders for my body.”
×
Prayer Plan
“Prayer and journaling are so important for me. I also do the best self-meditation. It’s like five minutes and I really love to start my day that way. Getting back into prayer and really understanding the power of taking those few moments in the morning to go inward helps me feel grateful and makes it clear to me what I really want to bring into my life, and what I want to give out to others.”
×
Therapy Calls
“I’m also a huge proponent of therapy. I go once a week. I actually just changed my type of therapy, and it’s drastically helped me. I think therapy is great! There are a lot of nice therapists out there, but I started to get a little bit upset with myself...why I’m not changing, why am I not doing the work? A lot of therapy can be super passive, but I found a really awesome therapist who has helped me so much. I started with her right before the holidays and have been doing stuff with her in the new year. Our sessions have radically changed me very quickly. It’s been awesome.”

Not a whole lot of people can say they work with Nicole Kidman. Sarayu Blue can, but there’s way more to this 48-year-old than just being part of Amazon Prime’s Expats, the unofficial first must-stream of the year.
I am proudest that... I’ve found the grit to keep going, but I’ve held onto my soft, squishy heart.
Beauty to me is... feeling good in one’s skin and being our full selves, with no guard up, no pretense, nothing to prove.
I feel most beautiful when...I’m dancing with total abandon.
The beauty move I still can’t master is...putting on false lashes.
The beauty treatment I can’t live without is... threading. IYKYK.
The beauty product I splurge on is...Sachi Skin’s Pro Resilience serum. My thirsty skin drinks it up so quickly, and it makes my skin thoroughly glow.
The beauty product I always have with me is...Rosebud Strawberry lip balm and hand cream. I hate the feeling of dry lips and hands.
The beauty hack I’ve learned while getting ready on set is... wearing eye patches while doing your hair or makeup. Letting all that hydration soak in really helps! I love Dieux Skin’s eye patches because they’re reusable, and you can pair them with any eye cream. And the Live Tinted patches have copper peptides in them, which is a big plus.
The first big splurge I bought myself when I started booking roles was...in 2007, I booked my first lead on a pilot. I was working as a server/ bartender at the time and I was very frugal, but my good friend convinced me to splurge on a pair of knee-high Frye leather boots. The pilot didn’t get picked up, but I still have the boots!
The last product I used until the end was...all of them! I was raised not to waste anything and it’s stuck with me.
My favorite indulgence is...a strong, deeptissue massage. I treat myself to massages so rarely. I actually have two gift cards for massages that I’ve saved for literally years! I don’t know why I wait so long. I think I’m always saving them for a time when I “really need it.” But thank you for the reminder, because I need to just use them!
My favorite way to unwind is...to snuggle on the sofa with my dog and my husband and watch something funny.
My must-pack item when I fly is...a rich moisturizer and Vaseline. As someone with very dry skin, staying moisturized is the rainbow I’m always chasing.
My biggest beauty inspiration is...my mom. She wears no makeup, has zero beauty routine, and she’s one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever known.
On the heels of 66, the longtime actress says she’s proud to be an advocate for aging in Hollywood.
Andie Is Still Here
MacDowell
Andie MacDowell doesn’t work for Pantone, but she does have some direction when it comes to categorizing the exact shade of her hair.
“I don’t think it’s gray. I think it’s silver!” the actress and former model laughs when discussing the popular subject of her hair color. “I don’t like the word gray. Gray sounds dull. There’s nothing dull about my hair—it’s a beautiful color. I feel lucky that I have all these different shades in my hair!”
This spring, the soon-to-be 66-year-old and mom-of-three is also feeling lucky about the success of her show, The Way Home (seasons one and two are available to stream on Hallmark Movies Now), her long-time L’Oréal Paris partnership (she’s been a spokesperson for the b rand since 1986) and life in general.
“I really like my life. It is a pure pleasure for me at this age to get dressed up and have people take good care of me, do my hair and makeup, and photograph me,” she says. “All of this is an honor for me.”

With her unforgettable leading roles in ‘90s classics like “Greencard,” “Sex, Lies, and Videotape,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” and “Groundhog Day,” MacDowell has witnessed the evolution of women in Hollywood over the years. Having been a household name in the industry for so long, she’s seen its ebbs and flows, and its recent transformations and challenges.
And just as she’s navigated her own path, her daughters, Margaret Qualley a nd Rainey Qualley (son Justin Qualley has stayed out of the limelight), have also found their way into the same spotlight. Margaret, in particular, has made waves with her performances in acclaimed films and series, while Rainey has showcased her talent in both acting and music. Margaret’s marriage to Grammy-winning producer and Taylor Swift–collaborator Jack Antonoff adds another layer to their Hollywood ties. As the industry continues to evolve for women in particular, MacDowell has some thoughts for the next generation.
“WHEN I TURNED 40, IT WAS AN UGLY TIME FOR WOMEN IN HOLLYWOOD. WOMEN WERE BASICALLY DISPOSABLE AT 40.”
01 I know you’ve spoken about Hollywood and aging a lot. Do you think it’s getting better?
“I definitely think there have been vast improvements. I wish I had been around now when I was 30 or 40, because when I turned 40, it was an ugly time for women in Hollywood. Women were basically disposable at 40. We got set aside… even though they adjusted the business for men.
But I do feel like that’s changing. I think it has to do with awareness, and, also, a lot more women are involved now. When women get involved, we see characters from a different perspective. I think there’s space and room to grow, but things have changed a lot, and for the better.”
02 Do you have any advice that you’d give to your younger self when you were starting out in this industry? Anything you would have done differently?
“That’s a tricky question because life is what happens to you. A lot of times, it’s the journey that gets you to where you are now. I don’t know…I did give my daughters advice when they went into the business. I told them to watch movies and to know what they like. I still think that is good advice; I think continuing to study and take classes and grow and be flexible and realize there’s always something new to learn is key. I have given that advice, and I take that advice for myself as well.”
03 I like that. I know it’s an exciting time for your children as well, and they’ve seen success. How does that feel? Were you nervous in the beginning when they wanted to get into this industry?
“I was honored, because it meant that I didn’t do anything that was destructive to their lives. It meant that I had been a good mother because they would choose to do the same thing I had done. Of course, it was always hard as a working mother…I made a lot of sacrifices. I would also lose time with my children when I worked, but at the same time, they encouraged me.
There was a point when I went to them and I said, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ They literally said: ‘No, you can’t stop.’ They were really proud of me. I think that gave me the opportunity to show them that being able to work and be a successful mother is something that you can accomplish. They love working—they love doing what I do.
The only thing I didn’t want to have them do is work as children. I didn’t do that. And it can be fine. Parents can make that decision however they want to, but I felt like my kids deserved to have a childhood and not to work. I felt strongly that I didn’t want them to work as children.”
04 Congrats on the success of your show. How does it feel when you’re working on a project that is getting so much buzz?
“The script was very enticing, and I’ve read a lot of scripts! I was very impressed with the script for the pilot, and I think they followed through and kept the show very unique and interesting. It is such beautiful storytelling.
And I’m working with women—it is all women writers, and they’re all really good about listening to my feelings. They respect how I feel about my character when I bring suggestions. They’ve been very open to hearing how I feel, which is a unique experience…that does not always happen. I’m having a good time, and I’m glad that everyone seems to be enjoying the show.”
05 Your L’Oréal Paris partnership has lasted almost four decades, making it one of the longestrunning beauty contracts in the business. How does it feel to work with a beauty brand for so long?
“I’ve had three children with them! When I first found out they were offering me the contract—that very first contract—I found out I was pregnant, and I had to tell them. I was so afraid that they were going to dump me. They didn’t. I’ve managed to last a really long time with this incredible company. It has been an amazing journey for me and it’s an honor to be a spokesperson for them for this long. I’m very proud of them; I’ve watched them grow as a company. I’ve seen them show such deep respect for aging women, and they’ve really been a champion for all kinds of women and for diversity. I’m really proud to be with this company that I feel has been a strong advocate for women.”
“IT’S THE JOURNEY THAT GETS YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW.”
06 I know there’s so much talk about your hair color. Are you sick of talking about it?
”To be honest, I wanted to let it go gray earlier, but I was afraid. I finally got the courage during COVID when I saw it with my eyes and my skin color. Once it was growing out, I could see what the color was going to be like, and I really loved it. I knew it was time.
For me, it’s fascinating that it’s such a curiosity and interest to people. I think also, it’s important to stop and think about that interest and curiosity— because it wouldn’t happen if I was a man. It happens because I’m a woman. We have to look at that. We have to look at why there’s interest in me having silver hair, because if I were a man, there would be no question I had silver hair, right?
But, yes, I’m lucky. I think it’s a really good shade. Just the other day, someone asked me where I got my hair color, which was interesting. I told them, ‘I don’t color my hair.’ They said, ‘It looks like that?’ I said, ‘Yes, that’s what it looks like!’”
07 That’s funny. What other projects or personal things are you excited for as we get into 2024?
“I think my show will continue. Like I said, I really respect these writers that I’m working with, and it’ll be interesting to see where it all goes. I have some other things that I can’t talk about that could be possibly happening, and if they do happen, all I will be doing is working [laughs].
I really like my life. I live in a beautiful place, and I love to take care of myself. At my age, I think it’s smart to focus on that. I’m very physically active. I love to exercise. I try to take my classes all the time; I walk on the beach, I do yoga, I work on mindfulness, I love to cook, and I love to eat healthy food. I just love being strong and healthy and an advocate for aging, which includes taking care of my mind and being social. I have a very busy life!”

“Ever since I was a little girl, my hair has been a huge part of my identity. When people meet me, it’s the main topic of conversation. They ask about my routine and hair secrets, which is why I’ve been particular about doing anything in the hair-care industry. I wanted to work with a brand whose values aligned with mine and who had products that I genuinely loved.”

Oil Pull
“As a kid, my mom oiled my hair weekly. She would comb it out and put it in a big braid. I lost that tradition when I got older, like a lot of us have done with various traditions. I am just getting back in touch with exploring routines that work best for me. I’m on a journey to figure out a mental health routine, a sleep routine, and now I’ve finally settled on my hair routine.”
× Sunday Service
“Every Sunday, I oil my whole head—the AAVRANI hair oil is magic!—massage my scalp, and then wash and condition my hair. It sets me up for the week and feels meaningful. I feel prioritized and important by doing so. My Sunday routine is something I do not miss.”

SHAPE SHOP:
Inside the Architecture of a Haircut
by Danielle Fontana DooleyHave you ever wondered why a trendy haircut looks great on a friend or celebrity, but doesn’t look quite right on you? Turns out, there are a few reasons why.
Valery Joseph, hairstylist and owner of his eponymous salon, says that, like most things, haircuts are not one-size-fits-all.
“So many factors are considered when consulting with my clients on which haircut would be best suited for them,” he explains, listing texture, density and face shape as key elements.
“Haircuts can change someone’s face by highlighting or minimizing different features,” says celebrity hairstylist Jerome Lordet, noting that it can make someone look younger, or, unfortunately, older. “A haircut can be adapted or tweaked to complement different faces or achieve different looks.”
Hot Spots
A proper haircut begins long before your stylist takes out their shears. An understanding of facial anatomy is paramount. “It’s very important to understand face shapes, hair texture, how the hair falls, and if the client has cowlicks,” says Joseph. “We really analyze the hair.”
Some of the main areas a hairstylist should analyze before a chop include the forehead, cheekbones and jaw, Lordet says, noting that this will depend on face shape. “When cutting layers, depending on the hair type or cut, these points in the face can be general guidelines for length, and different haircuts can either highlight or minimize these parts of the face depending on your goals,” he explains.
Color Theory
Hair color also plays a crucial role in creating the perfect look, and it’s also a process that’s never cookie-cutter. “Different face shapes and hair textures may complement certain color placements better, helping to enhance or balance facial features,” says celebrity colorist Casondra Kaeding, who takes every client’s facial anatomy into account before coloring their hair.
“This helps me to strategically choose color placements to highlight their best features, and sometimes draw attention away from, or soften, certain areas.”
Quick Fixes
From slimming the face to softening harsh angles, the proper haircut has the power to alter facial features you’d rather draw attention away from. For example, the look of a wide forehead can be minimized with face-framing layers or curtain bangs. “A strong, square jaw can be made more feminine with a softer cut, or strong cheekbones can be emphasized with a strong cut,” Lordet adds.
ILLUSTR ATION BY: SAMANTHA HAHNWhen analyzing facial shape for color placement, Kaeding looks at four key areas: the cheekbones, jawline, forehead, and eyes. “The cheekbones and jawline can be softened or sharpened depending on the client’s preferences through strategic color placement,” she says. Placement around the forehead can also impact the shape of the face, “directing attention to or drawing it away from the size of the forehead.” Considering eye color and brow shape “is also key in creating a look that complements facial features.”
Youthful Moves
We know long hair can be synonymous with youth, but Lordet says that very long, heavy, straight hair can sometimes drag a face down and age it, especially for those over age 50.
“For women who want to age gracefully into wearing long, graying hair, the right long cut is beautifully complemented with blending different blonde highlights into grays to create really natural-looking color,” Lordet explains. “Sarah Jessica Parker is a great example of a haircut and color being combined to age gracefully into graying with long, beautiful hair.”
Regardless of your color or cut, the ultimate sign of youthful hair is healthy hair. Use a reparative mask at home— Kaeding recommends her clients use K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask between appointments—to keep your hair looking salon-fresh.
Getting macro on the scalp microbiome and how its components can live in harmony.

SCALP MICROBIOME REFERS
TO THE SURFACE OF THE SCALP, which comprises good and bad bacteria, its own unique pH balance, a protective layer known as the acid mantle, and skin cells, says New York trichologist Shab Caspara, founder of hair growth platform for women, leona.co.
“Similar to the gut microbiome, the scalp microbiome plays a critical role, helping to regulate the scalp environment, which affects everything from hair growth to scalp health,” explains New York dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD.
“This microbial community acts as a defense system to shield hair follicles from potential threats such as irritation, toxins, infections, and damage,” says Miami dermatologist Dr. Deborah Longwill. Ultimately, a well-balanced microbiome “can help protect against pathogens, reduce inflammation, and even change sebum production,” adds Dr. Henry.

DELICATE BALANCE OF THE
SCALP MICROBIOME can be thrown off by many things. Some are in our control; others are just out of reach. Caspara says, “Harsh cleansing agents in shampoos, improper and infrequent shampooing, an accumulation of scalp buildup, environmental debris, dry heat, sensitizing ingredients like concentrated essential oils, and even diet can negatively impact the microbiome’s pH.”
The microbiome is sensitive, and even slight changes to its status quo can trigger noticeable differences in your hair. Certain medications like antibiotics, poor nutrition, pollution, extreme weather, UV damage, and hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy or menopause, can disrupt the balance, explains Dr. Henry. Other little things like washing your hair too often, high stress levels, environmental changes, and tight ponytails can also throw things out of whack, says Dr. Longwill.
AN OFF-KILTER SCALP MICROBIOME
IS NO JOKE. “As a defense mechanism, an imbalanced microbiome can overproduce sebum and lead to irritation and inflammation or scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis,” says Caspara. Signs of an unhealthy microbiome include oily hair the same day you wash it; a sensitive, itchy, smelly scalp; redness; flaking; and a tight, dry scalp. Dr. Longwill warns that hair loss, hair thinning and decreased hair growth can occur in the wake of an imbalanced microbiome. “This imbalance can impact the appearance of the hair, causing it to look dull and damaged,” New York dermatologist Jody Levine, MD explains. Like probiotics can be used in the gut to promote a healthy GI system, there’s a unique interaction between good skin flora and bad skin flora in the hair follicle that can promote or limit scalp inflammation, says Fort Lauderdale, FL dermatologist Dr. Matthew Elias.
BECAUSE THE MICROBIOME IS
SO FICKLE, it’s important to maintain homeostasis as best you can so your scalp and hair stay healthy and happy. Avoid doing the actions known to throw off the microbiome and opt for gentle, regular hair washing, a balanced diet, hydration, stress management, and sun protection, suggests Dr. Longwill. She also recommends taking probiotics and prebiotics, avoiding excessive heat tool use and getting regular haircuts. Dr. Henry says supplements like Nutrafol can be helpful too, as they contain ingredients to support a healthy scalp.
“Given the significant influence of genetics, lifestyle and overall health, individuals may experience diverse reactions to the state of their hair microbiome, varying between those with a healthy microbiome and those with an unhealthy one,” Dr. Longwill says. “I highly advise individuals facing persistent hair or scalp issues to consult with a local dermatologist. Seeking professional guidance ensures a thorough understanding of the root cause of their issues and facilitates the creation of a personalized and effective treatment plan.”
Did You Know?
“The scalp microbiome is unique to each individual, much like a fingerprint,” says Dr. Levine. “Factors such as genetics, age and overall health contribute to its specific composition. The understanding of this uniqueness guides boardcertified dermatologists to develop personalized haircare routines for optimal scalp health for each patient.”

3- D Vision
Tons of people have a desire for plastic surgery, but envisioning the final result can be a roadblock. But what if you could try on your new features before making the plunge? In the modern age, 3-D imaging and printing make that possibility a reality. Ahead, experts share their experiences with these technologies in the world of aesthetics.
TRY IT ON
— Isabelle Buneo“For us, 3-D technology is the whole journey, from your pre-op consultation to how we use it during surgery and post-op. The idea of using 3-D imaging before surgery has been a powerful tool for some time, but we are taking that one step further and making it applicable to what we do in the operating room. So, instead of me talking ‘at’ a patient and having them hold up a mirror, we can pull up their 3-D images and manipulate them on-screen, allowing for a real conversation about expectations. We then take the 3-D printed mold with us into the operating room to ensure our work isn’t done until that result is achieved.”
REVISION RHINOPLASTY
“At our practice, we currently utilize 3-D imaging for rhinoplasty simulations in almost every case. It allows patients to view their potential results in three dimensions at an infinite number of angles. We also use these images in the operating room to guide us during the surgery.”
CONS TO CONSIDER
“While 3-D technology is an exciting frontier and allows for patients to have a better understanding of realistic results and expectations, there are some downsides to this technology, like increased cost and the possibility of over-promising results. There is definitely a risk of overpromising and under-delivering when using these technologies. Additionally, the cost of the 3-D devices used within a practice are high, and utilizing them in consultations runs a higher price tag for patients.”

We are moving at the speed of light into the future, and what we have on the horizon are remixes and upgrades of the powerful innovations we have now. These up-and-comers aren’t household names, but they promise to deliver swift transformations with major payoffs. As these beauty breakthroughs make their way into treatment rooms, we take a giant leap into a new era of facial rejuvenation. Are you ready for it?
New Line Erasers
What they are: We are hearing that there are three new injectable wrinkle relaxers coming soon. These new neurotoxins are in development and are said to have some major differentiators that set them apart from what’s currently available.
How they differ: The first neurotoxin creating significant hype is Bonti by Abbvie. It represents a new botulinum toxin type, Type E. “There are different types of botulinum toxin, and the one we’ve been using for decades is Type A,” says West Palm Beach, FL dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD. Dr. Beer says that with Bonti, we can expect a very fast onset, providing visible results within 24 hours. This makes it a good choice for big events or special occasions. “It has a lot of potential. You can erase lines the day before a big event. However, its duration is shorter, lasting around two to three weeks, so it’s a very temporary result,” adds Dr. Beer.
Another innovation coming soon is a liquid neurotoxin by Galderma, known as a relabotulinum toxin A. New York plastic surgeon Michael Kane, MD says the benefit is mostly for the injector, but results from the liquid formulation are promising. “The benefit is that the injector will not need to reconstitute the toxin, eliminating possible errors. [Reconstitution means mixing the neurotoxin, which usually comes in a powder form, with saline prior to injection to make it a liquid.] However, we’ve seen it has strong potency and a robust duration profile.”
Letibotulinumtoxin A is another newcomer that has already been approved in Canada and Europe. Dr. Kane says Leti shows a substantial duration of about 18 weeks. “A repeat injection study, meaning the subjects were treated again and again, showed prolonged results over time,” he notes.
Laser Tightener
What it is: Known for providing a range of treatments from a light, lunchtime laser to a deeper, more resurfacing treatment, the UltraClear laser has a new application called laser coring. The treatment uses a unique wavelength to remove tiny columns of tissue from the skin. This process both removes tissue and delivers energy from the laser to remodel remaining skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production.
How it is done: “Laser coring differs from traditional mechanical micro-coring because it removes slightly smaller cores of tissue while also delivering controlled energy into the skin,” explains Davie, FL dermatologist Lesley Clark-Loeser, MD. “It is approved for patients of all skin types. The primary demographic is individuals with signs of skin laxity, usually ages 40 and up. Additionally, it can also used in the treatment of scars from acne, surgery or trauma.”
How it differs: “Because the cores are tinier than micro-coring, laser coring lends itself to be a little bit more comfortable for the patient and doesn't require as much pain management or control,” she adds.
“Gliding” Lifts
What it is: While not a new technique, you may have noticed facelifts on your news feed recently displaying visible sutures that resemble crude stitching done on a doll. These “gliding” facial procedures involve repositioning the skin, tissue and muscle using quilting sutures, commonly referred to as a “hemostatic net.” While sometimes unsettling to look at, these quilting sutures play a role in ensuring the stability of the lift, although the procedure can also be done without them says La Jolla, CA plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD.
How it is done: The “gliding” technique is often referred to as a “scarless facelift,” but it does require small incisions concealed in the hairline. “While gliding techniques can be applied to various parts of the face, the most popular procedures are ‘gliding periorbital shaping,’ ‘gliding browlift’ and the ‘gliding facelift.’ These are typically performed through tiny hairline incisions or hidden incisions within the hairline,” says El Paso, TX plastic surgeon Ozan Sozer, MD. “This procedure is often chosen by younger patients who are concerned about the scars associated with traditional facelifts. A ‘gliding facelift’ typically does not involve the removal of skin. Instead, the deep plane of the face is elevated and the skin is draped vertically using surgical netting.”
How it differs: The “gliding” part relies on the suture technique which prompts the skin to re-adhere to the muscle in a higher position.

of Unique Transformations
Opting for a rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” is a big decision. In the world of plastic surgery, it’s more than a simple tweak. This intricate procedure involves navigating delicate nasal structures while preserving unique features. A “good” nose job can enhance one’s features, while a “bad” one may lead to distress and unhappiness, and sometimes require a revision. These four patient stories demonstrate that achieving a great result isn’t about attaining a picture-perfect nose, but rather aiming for the one that’s perfect for your face.

PROCEDURE
Primary Rhinoplasty
New York, NY
PLASTIC SURGEON
Barry Weintraub, MD
What It Is: A rhinoplasty involves reshaping the nose to improve its appearance. It can address issues such as a dorsal hump, asymmetry or overall size and shape of the nose. It can also be performed to correct breathing difficulties caused by structural issues in the nose, such as a deviated septum, but its primary focus is on aesthetic enhancement.
Joey’s Story: “I’ve always had an issue with my nose,” says Joey. “Every time I took a picture or a selfie, I found myself needing to edit my nose. It was the first thing I noticed. I really didn’t want to take pictures because of it.”
Her concerns centered around her bulbous tip and the width of the bridge. She says, “I wanted it to be more narrow, defined and feminine.”
Determined to enter college with more confidence in her appearance, she set out to find the right surgeon. “She was resolute,” says Joey’s
mother Lauren. “Personally, I was opposed to her having surgery or altering anything about her face.”
Joey says that getting a naturallooking result was her top priority. “I went for three consultations with different surgeons. I ended up going with Dr. Weintraub because he really understood what I wanted.”
Dr. Weintraub says, “Like many of my patients, Joey wanted a very natural result, so we conservatively narrowed the tip and cartilage. This prevented her nose from drooping when she smiles.”
The End Result: “My friends and family notice a change, but can’t pinpoint exactly what it is,” says Joey. “I absolutely love my results.”
Lauren says she admires Joey’s determination: “She looks beautiful, but more importantly, like herself.”
“I believed she was perfect the way she was. However, now I can see how much happier she is and how natural she looks, and I’m glad she didn’t listen to me,” Lauren says.

Tina, 52
PROCEDURE
Revision Rhinoplasty
LOCATION
San Francisco, CA
FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON
David W. Kim, MD
What It Is: A specialized surgical procedure that addresses and enhances the results of a previous rhinoplasty. If a patient is dissatisfied with their initial results, experience disfiguring complications, or develops functional issues, a revision can help. In some cases, cartilage may need to be taken from areas like the ear or ribs to achieve the desired improvements.
Tina’s Story: “My rhinoplasty journey began with my first surgery at 18,” says Tina. While it initially improved the appearance of her nose, over time, her anatomy began to shift and change. This lead to her decision for a revision at the age of 52. “I just hated the way it looked. It was like, ‘I got this work done, and it didn’t even last.’“
“While I loved my original results all throughout my 20s and 30s, my nose seemed to curve, the hump became more noticeable, and the overall shape had altered. I felt like
it was looking worse and worse as the years went on.”
Tina says she chose Dr. Kim after a lengthy search because she liked his approach. “His focus was to address all of the discrepancies and deliver a natural look by lifting the tip, smoothing out the bumps and ridges, and then straightening my nose out.”
To achieve this, Dr. Kim used rib cartilage to create a straighter nose and correct internal deviations.
The End Result: “My nose looks natural. It fits my face and it’s straight now,” says Tina. “It totally changes everything. It has also improved the symmetry of my face, even when my hair is up in a ponytail.”
Tina’s advice before choosing a surgeon: “Make sure you’re confident in your plastic surgeon’s abilities and that your expectations match. It’s hard to fix your nose once it has been altered.”
The “Liquid Nose Job”
PATIENT
Adam, 60
PROCEDURE
Nonsurgical Rhinoplasty
LOCATION
Scottsdale, AZ
FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON
James Bouzoukis, MD
What It Is: A nonsurgical rhinoplasty, often called a “liquid nose job,” is minimally invasive and involves injecting dermal fillers to reshape the nose. Expertly placed filler can smooth out imperfections, provide more definition and improve symmetry. The results are temporary, but it offers a quicker, less-invasive alternative to surgery.
Adam’s Story: Adam’s choice to have a nonsurgical rhinoplasty at age 60 was fueled by his desire for a noncommittal facial upgrade. “I wanted something that would be subtle, but effective. If I didn’t like it, I could change my mind. It wasn’t a permanent surgical thing.” His primary goal was to make his nose straighter and lift the tip.
“It was a great experience from start to finish. Dr. Bouzoukis made me feel comfortable with the procedure and injecting my nose. He explained the process, risks, benefits and how long the results would last.”
The procedure itself was nearly painless, says Adam, with minimal bruising and swelling that gradually subsided over the course of a week or two. “I liked that I could see an immediate improvement right away, before I even left the office.”
The End Result: Offering advice to those considering a “liquid nose job,” Adam says it’s a win-win, especially if you want a pre-surgery preview. ”Everyone wants to look in the mirror and be pleased with their appearance. I think it has made a noticeable difference. I really like the way my nose looks now. I wasn’t crazy about it before—it wasn’t that I hated it—but now, it’s a net positive in my mind.”
“I go about every 10 months and I don’t think I will stop. It’s made a big difference in how I look and feel,” says Adam.

PATIENT
Alexia, 20
PROCEDURE
Ethnic Rhinoplasty With Ultrasound Technique
LOCATION
Miami, FL
FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON Anthony Bared, MD
What It Is: Ethnic rhinoplasty is a type of nose surgery that is tailored to preserve the patient’s ethnic heritage and achieve a more refined nose shape and size. This procedure considers the diverse distinctions among different ethnicities, including variations in skin thickness, nasal tip and nostril size, and the width of the nasal bridge. It requires an understanding of the typical facial characteristics of various ethnic groups and strives to maintain the unique features of each group.
Alexia’s Story: ”Growing up, I was never bullied, but I was always insecure about my features,” says Alexia. “I didn’t really resemble my family as much. I had a big hump on my nose and it was very crooked.” At 18, she decided to get a nose job to address the concerns that bothered her. “I chose Dr. Bared because he made me feel so comfortable and he was very realistic about setting expectations about what he could do. And he completely delivered. He gave me a Hispanic rhinoplasty.
I’m from Guatemala, and while I wanted to correct my hump and bulbous tip, I didn’t want to change my face. I wanted a more lifted tip and a straighter side profile, but I still wanted to look like me.”
The End Result: Dr. Bared focused on providing Alexia with symmetry and a more balanced nose that fit her face. “He was able to do all of those things, and I think I resemble my mom now a lot more because my nose looks so much more like hers. Before, I didn’t look like her at all.” Alexia says what she loves most about her result is that her other facial features remained unaltered. “My nose just looks so much more refined and fitting to my face. It has definitely improved my confidence. I’ve never felt so comfortable with myself. That’s been the biggest thing for me.”
“I don’t even feel the need to wear makeup when I go out. I feel like my inner beauty is finally released,” says Alexia about her new nose.

Breasts
Chin + Jawline
“Liposuction has been an extremely popular operation since its inception in the late ‘80s,” explains Houston plastic surgeon Henry Mentz, MD. “It has become safer and more reliant on sculpting rather than reducing bulking, and we can create better definition and elegant contours.” Precision lipo can redefine the lower face and jawline.
Liposuction can treat gynecomastia in men and create a sleeker contour in women. “You can smooth bra rolls and bulges,” says Southfield, MI plastic surgeon Mariam Awada, MD.
Waist + Love Handles
Removing fat from these areas can sculpt a slimmer waistline and create hourglass curves. “Younger patients typically treat the saddlebags. As they get older, treatment becomes more global, like the waist, stomach and outer thighs,” says Dr. Mentz.
Louisville, KY plastic surgeon Chet Mays, MD performed liposuction on this 29-year-old patient to sculpt her jawline for an elegant result.
Knees
Remove excess fat above the knee for improved definition. Many of these treatments include the addition of heat by way of ultrasound, radio frequency or laser, says Dr. Mentz. “We are using add-ons now in combination with liposuction, mainly to heat up the soft tissue under the skin, which helps to tighten up the skin.”
Ankles
Pubic Area
Treating below the abdomen can improve the profile of the lower body.
Duxbury, MA plastic surgeon
Christine Hamori, MD performed liposuction during a “mons pubis lift” on this 47-year-old patient to flatten the area.
Strategic liposuction can minimize and contour the ankles, artfully enhancing the natural curve between the ankle and foot. This can give a sleeker and more graceful appearance to the lower legs.
Neck
“The facelifts and necklifts I perform are always combined with Smartlipo to target the neck and jowls,” says The Villages, FL plastic surgeon Fernando Serra, MD. “Laser-assisted lipo is ideal for smaller areas. It uses a tiny 1-millimeter tube with a laser fiber that ruptures fat cells, draining them as liquid, while tightening skin.”
Arms
Precision sculpting of the arms not only gives them a toned look, but can also address minor skin sagging.
“There is a lot of misrepresentation in marketing that liposuction is minimally invasive with almost no downtime,” says Houston plastic surgeon Olga Bachilo, MD. “Anyone who has had liposuction knows there will be downtime involved.”
Abdomen
Creating a sculpted, tighter tummy starts with removing unwanted fat.
“The abdomen by far is the most popular area, followed by the flanks,” says Dr. Bachilo.
Cheeks
“Fat in the cheeks may be improved with microlipo to highlight bone structure,” says La Jolla, CA plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD. “Buccal fat can be contoured, but usually not with liposuction.”
Back
Smoothing away excess fat can showcase a more toned and sculpted back.
Hips + Thighs
Sculpting and reshaping the hips can enhance curves and smooth the outer thighs. “The outer thigh area needs a cautious approach, as it’s unforgiving regarding contour irregularities. Other treatments may sometimes be advised,” Dr. Bachilo says.
Buttocks
Known as a BBL, the Brazilian Butt Lift helps volumize and reshape the backside. “A common combination is a tummy tuck with back lipo, as well as fat transfer to the buttocks,” says Dr. Bachilo.
Dr. Awada gave this 42-year-old patient a tighter stomach with a tummy tuck and lipo.
Calves
Highlighting calf muscles can give them a more toned look. “If a patient is having any cosmetic surgery, they may decide to add on liposuction of the legs or inner thighs to enhance their result,” says Dr. Mentz.
Dr. Bachilo sculpted this 26-year-old patient’s waistline, back and derrière with liposuction. She also performed a fat transfer to the buttocks and hip dips to create a more contoured look.
Statistics indicate a trend toward smaller, more natural-looking breasts, and the experts have a lot to say about it.
54%

the percentage decrease in breast augmentations between 2021 and 2022
Tucson, AZ plastic surgeon Raman Mahabir, MD says the biggest trend in breast surgery right now is more natural-looking breasts. “People no longer want to look as augmented. We’re now able to have better conversations with patients about picking implants that fit their body well.” Eugene, OR plastic surgeon Mark Jewell, MD agrees that patients are opting for more realistic size options.
“It’s hard to know exactly what has changed, but most likely it’s the increasing trend toward ‘healthy lifestyle’ and ‘natural results,’” says Louisville, KY plastic surgeon M. Bradley Calobrace, MD. Dr. Mahabiralso points out that the “ideal” aesthetic has gradually shifted. “A quick look through NewBeauty today versus even five years ago shows some significant differences.” La Jolla, CA plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD says the state of the economy may also play a role.
the percentage increase in breastreduction procedures from 2019 to 2022
Dr. Calobrace has seen a move toward smaller breasts in his practice, resulting in implant removal and breast reductions. “Most women would agree that smaller breasts are easier to live with,” says McMurray, PA plastic surgeon Simona V. Pautler, MD. “Smaller, round, perky breasts are featured all over social media more than large, heavy, saggy ones. Fashion trends also call for no bra.” Additionally, smaller breasts stand up to gravity more, resulting in less surgery to correct tissue stretching, she adds. And, it’s easier to exercise with less weight on the chest.
30%
the percentage increase in breast lifts from 2019 to 2022
Patients “want to improve sagginess and have the nipple-areola centered on the breast mound. This can only be achieved with a mastopexy,” says Dr. Jewell.
“In the past, when a more augmented look was desired, the breast lift was accompanied by an implant” says Dr. Calobrace. Now, lifts often stand on their own. We’ve also seen implantremoval procedures increase, and when a patient downsizes, they often want a lift, notes Dr. Mahabir.
For a “more natural look, the lift can be done without implants,”says Dr. Calobrace. “Instead, it can be done alone or potentially with an autoaugmentation or fat grafting, which are two trends to be on the lookout for.”
PROCEDURALImplant removal was up 5% from 2021 to 2022, with combined removal and replacement procedures down 10%
“We are seeing a lot of women downsizing their implants,” says Dr. Mahabir. However, this might not be as simple as a trend toward smaller breasts. With social media and easy access to information, people are more educated on their options than ever before. The danger, however, is that the average person can’t always decipher accurate information from misinformation.
“Social media has made people much more informed about breast implants, especially the Breast Implant Illness [BII] issue,” adds Dr. Pautler. While a trend toward smaller breasts can play a role, Miami plastic surgeon Sean Simon, MD suggests that an important factor of implant removal is celebrities and influencers sharing their stories of removing their implants and then having their symptoms dissipate. With Breast Implant Illness being a hot topic, Dr. Singer cautions that there are some surgeons online who may opt to suggest implant removal, even when it may not always be needed or best for the patient.
Your Post-Goal Body
You lost the weight. Now what?
DID YOU KNOW?
According to healthcare industry research by Trilliant Health, providers wrote more than 9 million prescriptions for GLP-1 medications in the last three months of 2022 alone.
Even when weight loss becomes weight lost, your journey towards a new-you may not be over. As GLP-1 medications have shown their effectiveness and continue to rise in popularity, the aesthetic industry is rising to meet the moment of post weight-loss goals.
From skin-tightening procedures in brandnew places to breast reductions and lifts, plastic surgeons can provide the final touch to a major transformation. And their services are more in-demand than ever before. What was once a fairly niche part of plastic surgery is on trend to become the new standard. Here, aesthetic experts share the protocols to keep us all safe and the procedures that create the best result for a post weight-loss body.
From Niche to Need
“I have a niche in the post weight-loss plastic surgery arena,” explains Concord, CA plastic surgeon Eric Mariotti, MD. “Until recently, this has been primarily through diet and exercise, as well as through bariatric procedures such as gastric bypass or a gastric sleeve— making the stomach smaller.”
As GLP-1 medications became a bonafide way to lose weight, more and more patients have begun seeking the kind of procedures Dr. Mariotti offers. Many are still actively taking these medications while doing so, leading to new protocols.
NEW RULES
“We are definitely seeing more surgical patients coming in while on GLP-1 meds,” explains Las Vegas plastic surgeon Mary Herte, MD. “And this poses an increased anesthetic risk, so we are requiring our patients to stop taking them for three weeks in advance to improve their safety at surgery.”
A recommendation from The American Society of Anesthesiologists for those who are on weekly dosing of GLP-1s is to hold their dose for at least a week. That increased risk has to do with the way these medications work.
“The food literally stays in your stomach longer,” explains McMurray, PA plastic surgeon Simona V. Pautler, MD. “And with anesthesia, if there’s a chance there could be food in your stomach, there’s a risk of aspiration.” Being honest with your surgeon about what medications you’re on is essential to remaining safe and ensuring a smooth procedure.
Top-Performing Procedures
The thing about losing weight is that the skin doesn’t bounce back, which creates laxity. In addition, patients are experiencing volume loss in areas they want to maintain, like the face.
“In my practice, breast and body contouring are the most requested surgeries,” explains Dr. Mariotti. “With age, pregnancy or significant weight loss with these newer medications, many patients are asking about procedures such as tummy tucks, breast lifts and other body-contouring procedures. Facial procedures have also increased in order to treat ‘Ozempic Face,’ a condition where facial fat is lost quickly.”
BEFORE AFTER
This patient lost 130 pounds and saw Dr. Mariotti to remove the loose skin on her lower stomach and thighs.
SKIN-TIGHT SOLUTIONS
“You can’t exercise skin away,” says Dr. Pautler. “When you touch the back of a cat or dog, you can see their entire back twitch, right? That’s because they have muscles in their skin that humans don’t have.” Because we’re left with the skin we have, losing weight quickly can cause that excess skin to hang. Removing that loose skin ultimately requires surgery.
“Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight on GLP-1 medications tend to fall into two categories,” explains Pittsburgh plastic surgeon Leo R. McCafferty, MD. “One is men and women who have a lot of extra neck skin and are considering a facelift. The other is mostly women seeking typical body-contouring procedures in areas like the tummy, arms and legs.”
THE BEST OF THE BREAST PROCEDURES
Weight loss impacts all bodies differently, and the breasts tend to be an area of concern once a goal weight is achieved. If weight is lost in the breasts, patients may experience deflation, where a loss of volume causes breast tissue to sag and may significantly reduce its size.
“I’ve actually had a few patients just this week who were initially considering breast reductions,” Dr. McCafferty says. “But after weight loss, they really only needed a lift and perhaps a small implant to restore shape and volume.”
If weight isn’t lost in the breast area, a breast reduction may be considered for balance. “Breast reduction might be needed to achieve better proportion after weight loss,” Dr. Herte explains. “Naturally largebreasted women generally do not lose weight in their breasts as readily as smaller-breasted women.”
PUMP UP T HE VOLUME
Another key area that experiences volume loss is the face, which can create a gaunt look. This side effect can be particularly jarring, but there are ways to restore volume even before reaching a goal weight.
“Support of the facial structure with rejuvenation filler—for collagen stimulation—and judicious volumizing can keep a healthy and youthful look despite significant weight loss,” Dr. Herte says. “Family and friends can undermine a patient’s weight loss by making remarks about how gaunt or unhealthy they look as they lose facial fat, as well as body fat. In the process of weight loss, aesthetic injections can keep the motivation going until that ideal weight goal is reached and they can consider surgery to fine-tune their results.”

She is an incredible synergy between physical and mental well-being As a licensed psychologist with a private practice focusing on children and adolescents and as a hot yoga instructor in Scottsdale, Arizona, she intertwines her dedication to fostering mental health with her passion for sharing the transformative gift of yoga. “Everything that’s part of my life has to be in alignment; it has to be interconnected and authentic.” In this exclusive interview, De Simone shares her views on aging, fitness, and wellness of the body, mind, and spirit.
What is your favorite tip to stay fabulous?
“Yoga, without a doubt! It serves as the Fountain of Youth for me, physically and mentally. Beyond the physical practice, yoga grounds me in all aspects of life, from work to workouts It’s the reason people are surprised by my age, attributing to my vitality.”
How has your approach to health and wellness evolved over the years?
“In my younger years, dancing shaped my physique It was transformative From overcoming shyness to finding my true self on stage, it’s where I came alive. My teenage years were filled with pageants, and dance
was the anchor that helped me express myself. As I grew older, yoga became a holistic practice aligned with my psychology profession Spirituality plays a crucial role; it’s the thread that ties mind, body, and spirit together in my wellness journey.”
How has your pageant experience shaped your outlook?
“The pageant experience was eye-opening. Realizing the positive influence on others has filled me with gratitude It’s a joy to know that unexpected connections and support can emerge from such competitions, shaping a bright future.”
Tell me about your passion for running.
“Running is my therapy! I do a lot of the same runs every year. I’ll kick off my race season with the Thanksgiving Day Classic [10 miles]. Then, I typically do the Runner’s Den Scottsdale Half Marathon (but we haven’t had one in the last few years sad face). And, I run the Lost Dutchman marathon in February. I’ve run the New York City Marathon, as well I am proud to say that I have completed 11 full marathons and 22 half marathons I’m fully committed to my training Some days, I get up at 3:30 am to train rain or shine.”
What advice would you give your younger self?
“Slow down Despite what you might think, it actually gets better. I was always in a rush, racing through high school, college, and grad school Now, I wish time would slow down.”
How have your passions and habits contributed to your authentic life?
“Authenticity is key. Whether it’s my passion for travel or habits I’ve cultivated, they all contribute to a genuine, aligned life. Embracing authenticity in my 40s is about cherishing what truly matters.”
As far as your career goes, when did you know you wanted to work with kids?
“I’ve always been motivated to help others and make a difference. Ever the ambitious one, I immediately entered a doctoral program after undergrad and got my master’s along the way. In 2012, I opened my practice with a good friend.”

Here, Hairston encourages all to embrace each moment, find strength in authenticity, and recognize that the most beautiful compositions arise from the courage to dance to one’s own rhythm
“My biggest tip for having confidence is to own every part of who you are. I call it a “wabi-sabi” viewpoint: a way of living that focuses on finding beauty within imperfection and peacefully accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay.”
“People often ask, ‘What advice would you give your younger self?’ I don’t write messages to my younger self What she teaches me as an adult is bigger than any message I could ever give her reminders that I came here as love and to never lose my childlike wonder or compassionate heart and love for others.”
“True beauty is kindness, courage, and the unique aspects of each person’s passions It’s not limited to external appearances, but a light that shines when we tap into our authentic selves.”
“For me, embracing my age means savoring new experiences, whether learning a new skill, traveling to a new place, or simply deepening my connection with loved ones With each new age, I’ve gained wisdom and confidence that helps me navigate life with grace and humor.”

This Fab Over 40 finalist lives in Kimberly, WI, and navigates the multifaceted roles of wife, mother of three children, RN, and owner of L’artiste Injecteur (The Injector Artist) med spa in Appleton. Here, she offers thoughts and advice on aging and how she approaches her day-to-day with grace and gratitude
“Learn to stop worrying about what others think of you. Do what makes you happiest! Stop trying to make everyone but yourself happy.”
“Go with your gut All the choices you make will inevitably lead to where you need to be And there are some things you wouldn’t want to change in the end.”
“My favorite tip to stay fabulous is prioritizing health—drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep, move daily, and have a positive attitude I know it’s cliché, but when I properly care for myself physically and mentally, I can better care for my family.”
“Don’t sweat the small stuff, and do not be afraid of getting older There is so much more you learn to appreciate with age, like amazing friendships, appreciating family and their quirks, really looking at things on a deeper level, worrying less about what other people think of you, and just being you, not what you think people want you to be There is so much beauty in individuality rather than being a clone.”
“Turning 40 was a struggle for me initially, but I have now embraced it because it really is just a number and not a definition of who you are or preconceived limitations society tells us comes with age. You gain so much more wisdom, life experiences, and meaningful friendships.”
“No amount of guilt can change the past, and no amount of worry can change the future So, be present and go easy on yourself.”

“I have done Botox, but I rely more on medicalgrade skincare, which has been essential for me since my 30s My favorite service, by far, is a medium-depth chemical peel.”
“We all embrace getting older differently So, what are your aging goals? They may be more exercise, new skincare, healthier eating, or even anti-aging procedures like Tox or Filler. Everyone has their comfort level Some will try everything, and some will do nothing. Neither one is right or wrong.”
“I recently read somewhere that someone should listen to understand, not to reply This spoke to me, and it’s my new mantra.”

Facing Anxiety
Are you afraid of the big bad dentist?
How much discomfort would you swallow to avoid going to the dentist?
If you’re me at 21, alone in London with a minor dental emergency, the answer is a fair bit. Chipping my front tooth on a beer bottle was not the end of the world, as embarrassing as it was, but I knew that it could lead to infection and that I needed to be seen sooner rather than later.
Still, I didn’t see a dentist.
Honestly, I wasn’t happy with the state of my teeth at the time. My smile was coffee-stained and I needed to floss more, and that was enough to catapult the anxiety. What was a little discomfort compared to making the appointment, walking into the office and getting poked in the gums with sharp instruments?
And it turns out, many people feel the same way.
Dental
by Rowan LynamAnxiety
YOU’RE NOT ALONE
According to the Cleveland Health Clinic, about a third of Americans are afraid of the dentist, and around 12 percent have an extreme phobia. However, many dentists estimate that the number of people experiencing dental anxiety is even higher. “Most patients have some fear of dental work,” says Houston cosmetic dentist Guy M. Lewis, DDS. “About a fourth of my patients have anxiety high enough that it causes serious problems, like avoiding regular dental appointments.”
Even people who manage to show up for regular appointments can be contending with serious fears, the cause of which can vary wildly. From the anticipation of pain to the way we view dentists in media, many of us have at least a mildly negative impression of the dentist. “Unfortunately, dentistry is known as a bad word, and films, TV shows and social media show dentistry in an uncomfortable or scary light,” explains New York cosmetic dentist Husam Almunajed, DMD.
Some people have their own personal horror stories from childhood, causing a persistent, lifelong anxiety to manifest. “Many patients have been hurt emotionally, if not physically by a dentist in the past,” says New York cosmetic dentist Jason Kasarsky, DDS. “A dentist saying, ‘how could you let it get this bad?’ can really impact someone emotionally. And when it comes to pain, many practitioners don’t want to give anesthesia to a child.”
Your Options for Relief
By the time Green Day released “Give Me Novacaine,” in the ancient past of 2004, Novacaine was already losing popularity among dentists as a method of numbing and pain relief. These days, we have better ways to get Comfortably Numb, as it were. According to Los Altos, CA cosmetic dentist Joseph Field, DDS, oral sedation is probably the most common and effective method for his patients with anxiety. “Using sedation is an incredible way to help patients with any kind of dental fear get the care they need,” Dr. Field explains. “Many patients in my practice use it even for routine procedures. After doing this for over 16 years, I’ve found that my patients are no longer afraid of getting dental work done because they know it can now be done in a very safe and comfortable way.”
LIDOCAINE: This is a common local anesthetic used to block nerve signals in the skin and surrounding tissues at the injection site.
BENZOCANE: This topical anesthetic can be applied directly to the inside of the mouth.
NITRUS OXIDE: This relatively weak inhalational anesthetic gas causes a state of euphoria and provide anxiety relief.
IV SEDATION AND GENERAL ANESTHETIC:
These are typically only used when other options are exhausted. Dentists may still perform some surgical procedures under sedation, which should be supervised by an anesthesiologist.
of people have intentionally put off a dental appointment
*According to a survey conducted by Byte in 2022
DENTISTS WANT TO HELP
Perhaps the biggest concern raised by dental anxiety is that patients tend to avoid the dentist. According to a survey conducted by Byte in 2022, about 61 percent of people have intentionally put off a dental appointment.
“The consequences can be tragic,” Dr. Almunajed explains. Without regular treatment, the plaque in your mouth will turn to calculus, which can lead to gum recession and bone deterioration. “What’s crucial about this is that you do not even feel something is wrong. The buildup actually holds the teeth in place until the bone loss is so severe that you start to feel your teeth are loose. All the while you are still pain-free. At this point, the teeth may be hopeless, and the only treatment is extraction.”
The best way to prevent these kinds of avoidance-based consequences is for dentists to work with patients to address their anxieties. “It’s important to establish trust with patients and talk to them on their level, without a bunch of dental terminology,” Dr. Lewis says. Additionally, assuring patients involves more than just a commitment to anesthetic, but also a promise not to judge them for their teeth. “Addressing the fear of judgment is crucial in helping patients feel more comfortable and confident seeking dental care.”
Ultimately, your dentist should be your partner against anxiety. “We found that when you treat patients as human beings, they are open to giving dental work a chance, even when they are very afraid,” Dr. Almunajed says. “The number-one way to make a patient less anxious is to listen to them. Once you’ve heard their concerns, you can start to create solutions.”
The right dentist for you will want to meet you where you are and provide you care with as much comfort as possible. That includes taking steps to prevent pain. “I’ve had patients who need the most pain relief we can provide for just a regular cleaning because they’re so sensitive to pain,” Dr. Kasarsky says. “Other patients, you could drive a Jeep through their mouth and they might not feel it.”
The best way to accommodate these patients is to have a range of pain-management options.
“In our practice, we offer many different types of sedation, from laughing gas to oral conscious sedation and conscious IV sedation,” Dr. Lewis says. Many offices also offer comforts like noise-cancelling headphones, overhead televisions and even scented candles to promote a calmer environment.
Talking with your provider can also help you plan for more serious dental work. “Even if there is damage and major dental work needs to be done, we don’t want to throw these patients into the deep end,” Dr. Kasarsky explains. “We keep the first few visits around 20-minutes long and then create a plan to address their concerns with smaller steps.”

BEST_ STRAIGHTENING BLOWDRYER
Six years in the making, Dyson Airstrait allows you to blow-dry and flat iron your hair at the same time with one first-of-its-kind device. “The Airstrait’s innovation is spot on,” says hairstylist Matthew Collins. “The 45-degree blades of air take the hair from wet to dry with precision focus. It’s not just drying the hair, but also smoothing it as you glide the device down each section. There are no hot plates—just precision airflow—so it makes drying and styling your hair easier than you have ever experienced.” Plus, the device doesn’t use extreme heat, which means no damage. $500, dyson.com

BEST_ MOISTURIZER
You may have heard of skin boosters, but we prefer to call the trailblazing by Juvéderm moisturizer. Injected superficially within the dermis, it delivers microdroplets of hydrating hyaluronic acid deeper than topical products instant plumping and smoothing effects. In clinical studies, patients who were treated with SKINVIVE also reported high satisfaction with how glowing, hydrated, refreshed, and healthy their skin looked through six months. “For the first time in history, the FDA has approved an injectable moisturizer with the indication of ‘improvement in skin quality,’ which is something I had been working on with Allergan Aesthetics for the past 15 years,” says New York dermatologist Macrene Alexiades, MD. skinvivebyjuvederm.com

BEST_ PIGMENTATION SERUM
Although dark spots are small, they can have a big impact on self-esteem. La Roche-Posay conducted a study on 23,000 people to better understand pigmentary disorders and their impact on quality of life. After analyzing the results, MelaB3 Serum was born. Powered by the brand’s new exclusive ingredient called Melasyl, it effectively diminishes common pigmentation concerns, such as sunspots, age spots and post-acne marks. “Innovative approaches to treating localized excess pigmentation are very important to my patients,” says Glenn Dale, MD dermatologist Valerie Callender, MD. “MelaB3 addresses uneven skin tone, photodamage and dark spots by blocking melanin synthesis in the skin, and it works on all skin tones.” $45, laroche-posay.us
BEST_ WATER-RESISTANT SUNSCREEN
Remembering to apply sunscreen is one thing, but reapplying after a dip in the pool or a sweaty run is another. That’s where a supereffective water-resistant formula is critical. Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion SPF 60+ is a next-generation, lightweight sunscreen featuring the brand’s proprietary SynchroShield Repair technology. This creates a protective veil on the skin that lasts for 80 minutes and becomes even stronger when skin encounters heat, water or sweat. And if that weren’t enough, the formula also “self-repairs if it’s thinned by rubbing or movement.” How cool is that? Mix these features with five types of algae for long-lasting hydration, and you get a winning formula. $50, shiseido.com

BEST_ IN-OFFICE HAIR RESTORATION TREATMENT
One of the most frustrating side effects of aging is thinning hair and hair loss. Cutting-edge and noninvasive, AlmaTED Hair Restoration utilizes acoustic sound waves with air pressure. When combined with the specially formulated TED Hair Care Solution, it promotes accelerated hair growth in both length and thickness, without any discomfort and downtime.
“TED is helping both men and women alike,” says Grand Rapids, MI plastic surgeon Bradley Bengtson, MD. “We see it filling a gap as a treatment option for patients who want to reduce hair shedding and restore hair density, strength, thickness, and shine without pain, injections or downtime.” almainc.com

BEST_ TREATMENT FOR EXCESSIVE SWEATING
Sweat less and be confident all day with the Brella SweatControl Patch, an FDA-cleared, in-office treatment for primary axillary hyperhidrosis, aka excessive sweating. Brella uses patented “targeted alkali thermolysis” technology and generates heat when it encounters sweat. This signals the sweat glands to slow production. It’s as easy as a professional placing the sodium patch under the arms for up to three minutes, and it can provide relief of bothersome sweat for three months. “Brella is a welcome addition to the available options for excessive underarm sweating, especially because it is easy to apply, does not involve injections, and is a quick and essentially painless treatment,” says New York dermatologist Doris Day, MD. mybrella.com

BEST_ LED ACNE PATCH
The FDA-cleared, silicone Riki Loves Riki Miracle Patch attaches to the skin over a pimple to deliver purple light (a mix of red and blue LED light) in a quick, six-minute treatment for faster healing. “When you get an acne cyst, topical products don’t really help that much because they have a hard time penetrating the stratum corneum. A cyst is from the follicle, so it’s in the dermis, which is deeper,” says New York dermatologist Dan Belkin, MD. “Blue LED light has been shown to destroy acnecausing bacteria and red light has been shown to reduce inflammation. Unlike most topical products, it can actually penetrate, and it’s very safe. This is a very innovative way to treat an acne cyst proactively at home.” $105, rikilovesriki.com

A topical serum to help blur the appearance of veins seems like a dream, but MAELYS B-Vain Blurring Treatment makes it reality. Whether the concern is superficial or varicose veins, this triple-action, cools-on-contact formula helps energize the skin and reduce skin contrast with a noticeable blurring effect. The results of a 56-day trial on 30 participants showed that the serum is clinically proven to decrease and lighten the appearance of veins, as well as reduce the intensity of the look of veins. $49, maelyscosmetics.com

“Low-level light therapy (LLLT) has science behind it,” says New York dermatologist Robert Finney, MD. “For more than 20 years, there have been many well-designed scalp trials that have proven that certain wavelengths of light work on human hair for female and male genetic hair loss. This device requires a minimum of four to six months of consistent use to see results, but you should see an increase in the density of your existing hair. Consistency is key. It can take a year or 18 months to see longer hairs.” $859, currentbody.com
