typical beauty studio might whisper its ethos with modest decor and soothing color schemes, almost to de ect attention away from the act of beauty-seeking.

But Dirty Bird Esthetics isn’t a typical beauty studio.

e Midtown Sacramento waxing salon reads like a direct upload of owner Megan Vanderford’s maximalist and cheeky sensibility, with a oral mural cascading from ceiling to wall and vintage oddities drawing attention to every corner of the space. Beige: Be gone. Quiet luxury: Who is she?

For the last ve years, Vanderford has built a brand based on fun — and on making clients feel good about themselves.

“You can kind of guarantee that people are going to feel so cute after their eyebrows, after their Brazilian wax,” she says, adding that she gets a secondhand satisfaction from the immediate results.

Under its sparkly veneer is an equally irreverent take on waxing.

“I’m a gross girl,” Vanderford says with a smile as she describes the down and dirty business of hair removal. e esthetician doesn’t blanch at ingrown hairs, which she’s accustomed to remedying. at said, she’s big on prevention. “Exfoliation is a really big part of it,” she says, emphasizing the importance of before- and after-care.

Vanderford has grown her business steadily since 2020, but not without a few challenges amid the COVID-19 pandemic. She rst signed a lease for a cozy one-room studio on Capitol Avenue on March 1, only to promptly shut it down by March 13.But the cycles of closures and reopenings during that rst pandemic year worked in her favor, allowing her time to “readjust what I was getting wrong.” One year later, she hired her rst employee and started to look for a larger space.

Evelyn Padilla, a former Dirty Bird client, joined the sta in 2021, after witnessing the warm and inviting atmosphere Vanderford had cultivated. “A day at Dirty Bird is never dull,” she says, nearly four years in. “Over time, we’ve built such

genuine relationships with our clients that it often feels like we’re hanging out with longtime friends.”

e gift of gab is a hallmark of wellness professionals, and for Vanderford, it’s what attracted her to the gig. “You don't really get to yap during facials because it's supposed to be a little bit more peaceful. I just feel like waxing de nitely is more my speed and more of my personality.”

For fans of the yap, the gab and the tea, Vanderford spills it all on the Dirty Bird Instagram account. Her “Chirp and Chat” video series showcases genuine conversations on the waxing table: Waxer Jessi Lee is seen discussing imposter syndrome while administering a Brazilian wax to Vanderford, whose legs are up and walls are down; in another, Vanderford coaxes honest thoughts out of her husband, fellow business owner Anthony Giannotti, as she carefully plugs his nostrils with swabs of wax; and in one video, waxer Brittney Sanders reveals a fun fact about herself before Vanderford instructs her to fold “knees to chest.”

Vanderford, a former PR professional, is expert at creating a singular persona for Dirty Bird on social media — one that references pop culture, entertains with satirical skits, and plays up her softer side with real-talk posts.

Vulnerability, with its ability to disarm and bind client to practitioner, seems to be as much a secret sauce as the wax itself. “Creating a genuine connection,” says Padilla, is about “paying attention to details, delivering consistent, high-quality service and celebrating life’s milestones.”

Daycation for Seniors provides more than supervision for aging adults — it was designed to deliver dignity, enrichment, and peace of mind for families. For James Slaughter, owner and director of franchising, the mission grew out of firsthand experience with the challenges of senior care.

“Many of us on the founding team had walked the difficult road of caring for loved ones with dementia or age-

For many families, the impact is transformative. A caregiver named Karen brought her father to the Rocklin location while juggling the stress of caring for him and maintaining her own balance. “Almost immediately, she saw the difference,” James said. “Her father began thriving in the warm, social environment — joining activities, laughing with peers, and building friendships. For Karen, it was a tremendous relief to see him happy and engaged while also knowing she had time to recharge.”

Inspired by the profound change she witnessed, she is now opening a Daycation location of her own in El Dorado Hills. Music, games, and comfort animals also play a daily role. According to James, music has a unique way of unlocking memories and easing anxiety, while games encourage social interaction and lighthearted competition. Comfort animals, he added, provide companionship and ease loneliness. Celebrations are at the heart of Daycation. Birthdays, holidays, and cultural traditions not only lift spirits but also affirm the value of every participant’s background, culture, and life story.
