Committee, which allows the school to purchase the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) packages and equipment needed for students to safely and efficiently fill their placements. The assessments from each industry are completed by students in class time and the practical assessments are overseen by the ITO Assessors. The Nayland College Gateway Programme has successfully up-skilled and prepared many students for the workforce and local businesses continue to benefit from these young, motivated students who have the skills to make their way in the world. Motoring ‘treasure trove’ goes up for auction Kate Russell If you’re a Nelson vintage car enthusiast, then it’s likely you’ve heard of Dennis King and his huge collection of cars, car parts and memorabilia. This weekend, eight years after his passing, all Dennis’ sought-after items are going up for auction - a final “farewell” to the founder of the Nelson Vintage Car Club. The stars of the two day auction at the King's Quebec Rd residence will be Dennis’ three “all original” cars – a 1913 Ford T Racer, a 1915 Ford T and a 1930 Model A Ford. He purchased the 1915 Ford T in 1956 for ten pounds in Teal Valley, and once drove it from Nelson to Dunedin in one day – a 17 hour journey, stopping only for meals and to light the headlights. Auctioneer John Walker says he has never seen anything like it in his 29 years of auctioneering. “A sale of this nature will only come up every decade or so,” he says. “It’s a treasure trove for anyone in the motoring industry - you name it, it’s here.” Also up for auction will be eight sheds worth of car parts - including motors, cogs, pistons, manifolds, radiators, steering wheels, tyres, hubcaps and petrol
tanks. A rare Plume petrol sign, an original Model T oil can, and veranda posts from the old AA building in Nelson are also up for grabs. There is also a room full of motoring history items such as a large collection of books, AA badges, motoring badges, old car lights, photos, and signs, as well as household chattels. John says there has been “huge interest” in the auction, and he has had many people ringing him with humorous stories about Dennis. “He was heavily involved in the AA and renowned throughout the motor industry – everyone seemed to know him,” he says. “It will be a happy occasion, full of memories - there are some great treasures here.” The auction will be held at 166 Quebec Rd, this Saturday, 26 November, 11am (viewing from 9am) and Sunday, 27 November, 11am (viewing from 9am). There will also be a viewing this Friday, 25 November, 10am – 4pm, or by appointment. There will also be an onsite BBQ, including hot and cold drinks, with proceeds going to charity.
