Parents decline to immunise More than 200 infants in the Top of the South are not fully immunised, causing the region to miss a national health target and part of the “incentive funding” attached to it. The incentive funding is calculated each quarter and distributed to the region’s general practices through the Nelson Bays Primary Health Organisation. Up to $79,000 was available between July 2015 and June 2016 for Nelson Bays PHO if each of the five targets were met. The incentive funding is used by the Nelson Bays PHO to provide support and resources to general practices to further enable their immunisation activity. One of these targets is to immunise 95 per cent of children between eight and 24 months old. According to the most recent immunisation cover-

Fajbian says he couldn’t believe it had been found. “I just went ‘yessssss’. We had the camera set up in different places and I just left it behind. I was gutted.” As well as getting his camera back, Fajbian says seeing the footage that Neil had edited was another bonus in the story. “It was really kind of him to do that and it looked awesome. It’s definitely encouraged us to upload more footage.” Fajbian, Crusoe Jones and Hamish

Colvin say they practice their tricks as often as they can, finding walls, swings and gardens to use as takeoff and landing platforms. “I started doing it in Christchurch and when I moved to Nelson I just carried on and met these guys along the way. It’s just good fun,” says Fajbian. All three say they’ve never had any serious injury from their tricks and are inspired by videos they see on YouTube. Neil says returning the camera to the boys was a great story. “They’re really nice boys, we meet at Zumo to hand the camera over and they bought me a coffee and Maria a hot chocolate to say thanks. It’s really cool what they’re doing. I hope to see more videos of them in the future.”

Meetings to clean up ‘fly-tip’ Kate Russell

A mounting ‘fly-tip’ on the top of the Whangamoas has been investigated by the NZ Transport Agency, following an article in the Nelson Weekly. Regional Performance Manager at the NZ Transport Agency, Mark Owen, says that although they are responsible for keeping the state highways free of rubbish, they have discovered the area is actually a scenic reserve administered by the Department of Conservation. He says NZTA will meet with DoC and a neighbouring forestry company to discuss how to tackle illegal rubbish dump-

Mark says they have tried to prevent people dumping rubbish in this area by limiting access from the state highway to the reserve. “Dumping of rubbish outside of official tip sites is not only inconsiderate and damaging to our environment, it’s also illegal,” he says. “People who dump rubbish can be prosecuted, and we encourage members of the public to report people who dump rubbish illegally to their local council.” Anyone who is aware of people dumping rubbish can report it to the NZ Transport Agency 0800 44 44 49 or the council.

More fires allowed in Stoke, Atawhai and The Brook A change to the Nelson City Council’s woodburner plan means that 1600 Atawhai, Stoke and Brook residents will be able to install low emission woodburners – but the rest of Nelson will miss out. The initial plan change proposed the future provision for Ultra Low Emission Burners in Tahunanui (airshed B1) and the Washing-

ton Valley/Hospital area (airshed A), subject to air quality improvements. However, after considering all submissions, the commissioners’ decision has removed the future provision for ULEBs in these areas, unless replacing an existing authorised woodburner. More Nelson parents decline to immunise their kids FROM PAGE 1

“often philosophical” decision not to immunise their children. “Our region has a high decliner rate of between 6.4 per cent and 6.9 per cent at any point in time which makes attaining a 95 per cent immunisation compliance rate quite difficult,” he says. Alliance Support manager Andrew Goodger says the region is due to miss out on about $9000 due to the failure to reach the immunisation targets. “The payment is determined by

a formula which depends on the population numbers and the percentage immunisation rate achieved each quarter. So if the target is missed by a small amount, the amount received is a small amount less. If you miss by a lot, the payment is reduced proportionately.” Nelson GP spokesman Graham Loveridge says all GPs are very supportive of immunisation as a way of preventing diseases. “We’re disappointed that parents would choose to not vaccinate because we believe there’s enough

good evidence that vaccination is safe and prevents kids from having severe illnesses and, on occasion, from dying.” Graham says people have forgotten how bad these diseases are because they’re not around so much and the vaccine programme is a principal reason for that. Nurses and practice managers at various practices spoken to by Nelson Weekly say some practises are able to achieve 100 per cent compliance, but there are “pockets” of areas in Nelson where they struggle with parents opting not to immunise their child. A nurse, who asked not to be named, says there is a lot of pressure for practices to reach the target and

they have lists of families who have not immunised. They try to reach them but are often fobbed off. “Nelson has pockets of people making choices, and it’s our right to have choices in New Zealand. They’re saying, ‘we don’t want to immunise our children and it’s our right not to, we’ve read the information but we’re a decliner, we don’t want to’.” A nurse at Greenwood Health Motueka says the reasons that parents give for not immunising vary. “Some parents give reasons, some are very dodgy and just say ‘no, no, don’t call me back’, some have fears for vaccination safety and say they just want to research

things further.” Judy Gilmore, the practice manager at the Stoke Medical Centre, says parents who don’t want immunisations either think they don’t have to, that their child is too young or that they’ve heard bad things and don’t want to risk complications. Nelson Weekly spoke to five naturopaths within the region who advocate for parents to make “informed decisions about immunising”. Each said they didn’t want to comment due to the controversy of the subject and were scared of the backlash it would bring on their practices, with one saying, “I’m not going to put my neck on the line.”

Family violence a ‘significant problem’

Andrew Board Picking up beaten women from Nelson Hospital with bruises around their neck and broken bones is just one of the heart-breaking jobs left to staff at Nelson Women’s Refuge. Next week is Women’s Refuge Appeal week and Nelson manager Katie O’Donnell says it important for the organisation to attract as much donor support as possible as the money goes directly to helping the refuge support women and children. Each week around 50 incidents of domestic violence are reported to police in Nelson. Katie says that the true figure of domestic violence incidents is more likely to be 200 a week in our area. That ranges from people being controlled by their partner to those physically abused and the children who get caught up in the violence. Katie says in the past year her staff have picked up women from Nelson Hospital with a range of injuries, including broken ribs, strangulation bruising on their neck, and bruises on other parts of their bodies. “That is our bread and butter. For women it can be very depressing and very isolating.” She says the number of reported violence cases are “steady” but is rising as population increases and as other agencies work together to help identify family violence cases. “It is a significant

Katie says the organisation has undergone various different names over that time. “We’ve changed a lot, back in the 70s it was a small group of volunteers who just did it, they’d put people up in their own homes. Now we’re professionalised with social workers with degrees and we have a very structured way of working and funding that we report on.” Katie says each year the refuge works with around 300-400 women and children in Nelson. The money raised from their appeal goes to help cover costs. “When women come to us, often

everything has broken down, no money, no home, no job, a risk of losing their children and violence. So we help them with all of that, we walk alongside them. We rely on the community to help us to do that by donating to us. “Every time we’re able to help a woman and a child, it’s the best feeling you can get and that’s what the money is used for – to help women and children.” To donate to Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge either deposit money into their bank account, send a cheque, or find them next Wednesday to Friday at either their appeal stand in Nelson city or at Richmond, they will be dressed in purple. Chris thanked the communities in both Nelson and Tasman for their support, particularly the customers of both these sites. “Without community involvement and support we wouldn’t be able to give to these worthwhile organisations. Each charity was given time at the sites, window screens were washed and fuel flowed as well as conversations, allowing the volunteers to get up and close with our customers, hoping to gain support, and explain a bit more about their organisations” The tokens were counted and all the charities involved were winners, the public choosing how the combined total of $8,000 was to be shared. Le Tour exhausting for George's biggest fans

The Tour de France is only half way through and already proud Nelson parents Paul and Marina Bennett are exhausted after all the late nights and early mornings watching their son George racing in 'le Tour'. And it's not just the long hours glued to the television that are taking their toll. The stress of watching George flying down steep mountain roads at insanely high speeds or riding elbow-toelbow in the middle of a seething, testosterone-charged peloton in a hideous cross-wind is, at times, "too much".

"I can't watch some of it," Marina confesses. "It's too much for me it's too stressful. "Even when he got into that break and was going well, I couldn't watch all of it - I was too anxious and I went to bed. Then I got a text from our daughter Holly at two in the morning saying George was at the front so I jumped out of bed and went and watched again." But the worst moment, so far, for Paul and Marina has been the crash on stage 11 where George was forced off the road and catapulted head first into a ditch. Paul says the five or six seconds that George lay motionless on the side of the road seemed like an eternity. "It was really hard to watch, especially when he didn't move for so long," Paul says. "He's pretty tough so I knew it was bad when he just lay there - you start thinking what if it's serious and he ends up in a wheelchair. "But thankfully he got up and going again. We spoke to him that night and he was pretty sore - he had a headache and neck ache and he'd split his helmet in two." Interestingly, Paul admits his biggest fear for George, and all the riders, is the sinister threat of terrorism. The tragic death of

"The thing that really worries me is terrorism because the tour is such a soft target," Paul says. "It's on the world stage and there are 3000km of roads and big crowds, so it's uncontrollable - I really hope that nothing like that ever happens."

Although Paul jokes that he wishes George had become "an accountant or a doctor because it would be a far less stressful career", he says they are very proud of his performance in the tour and his selection for the Rio Olympics. Paul says George has also been fortunate to have received plenty of good support from the Nelson

cycling fraternity on his journey to the pro tour. "We can't take any of the credit for this - in fact we are always gobsmacked that we have produced a kid like this. Neither of us are competitive and although we always encouraged him, we never pushed him. "We found a tricycle from the Moutere dump and gave it to him when he was three and that was about it. Cleve [Shearer] and Jon [Linyard] probably had more to do with it because they took him mountainbiking on a school camp to Hanmer Springs and that got him started." However, Paul and Marina can take credit for the values they have instilled in George which have played a big part in his success. George's seventh place on stage nine may have been was a highlight, but Paul and Marina say they have really enjoyed seeing him racing with integrity. "We really enjoyed seeing him help out his team-mate Wilco Kelderman when he crashed and it was nice to see that he was really concerned about that spectator he ran into." Paul says. George was in 46th place on Monday morning after 15 stages of the tour.

Fishing celebrated at annual blessing Jessie Johnston Once again the annual Blessing of the Fleet event drew a large crowd as locals remembered those lost at sea and celebrated the importance of the fishing industry to Nelson. The event began last Friday night with a fireworks display while Saturday saw people gather at Sunderland Marine Pier for the blessing ceremony. The day included musical performances by the Nelson Male Choir, Motueka Brass Band, the Salvation Army Band and Nelson Christian Academy, while the blessing was conducted by Bishop Richard Elena. Graeme Bennett, father of Paul Bennett who died at sea when the FV Jubliee sank last year, threw the wreath into the water, followed by a minute’s silence, which was broken by eight bell tolls. “Nelson is Australasia’s biggest fishing port by far,” says Mike Smith, chair person for the Blessing of the Fleet committee. “There’s more fish landed over the wharf than anywhere else in Australia or New Zealand, it’s a vital part of the economy, a lot of people are not aware of that. An event like this just shows what this industry is worth to the region.” Five people were lost at sea last year, including two from Nelson, “that’s the true price of fish unfortunately, people die catching them,” says Mike. “[We’re here today] because Granddad was involved in the sea, so it’s just been in our family, it's part of our history,” say Tina and Chris Fortune. “We’ve got our own vessel as well, so it’s important that we remember those and play our part in the whole celebration of the sea.” After the ceremony, the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter entertained the crowds by performing a winch rescue, before the coastguard demonstrated fire fighting at sea.

500 healthier homes for Nelson Kate Russell

The Hmun Luai family is looking forward to having a warmer home soon, thanks to the locally-run Warmer Healthier Homes scheme, which has insulated nearly 500 homes in the past two years. The family say that their Washington Valley home, which they purchased a few months ago, is damp, cold and not retaining heat, despite having a pellet fire and heat pump running all the time. During winter, the house only sees the sun between 11am – 3pm, and they spend every morning wiping condensation from the windows. But, they say the worst thing is constantly having “very cold feet” due to bare floor boards

and no underfloor insulation. That’s where the Warmer Healthier Homes scheme comes in, and they have organised contractors Absolute Energy to come and insulate the Hmun Luai’s home in a few weeks time. The scheme services Nelson, Tasman, and more recently, Marlborough, and was initiated by the Rata Foundation. It is now governed by its own steering group, with funding and support from the foundation, Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, Nelson Marlborough DHB, Nelson City Council and Marlborough District Council. The Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) matches the funding that these other organisations collectively put into the scheme.

Chairman Bill Dahlberg says they are aiming to assist more families like the Hmun Luais, and estimates there are still around 4500 homes in Nelson that need to be insulated. “Around a quarter of the people who live in those homes are people who are really needy and have a health concern,” says Bill. Bill also says that out of the 480 homes they have completed so far, 45 percent have been tenanted, and the rest have been owner-occupied properties. “Eighty per cent of the homes we have insulated have been for a health need, and were referred by a health agency,” says Bill. “We are only just a wee way down the path. Julian Matthews' long run to Rio Jacob Page

Nelson 1500m runner Julian Matthews had a barbecue with Nick Willis and Hamish Carson to celebrate their Olympic selection last week. For the first time in history, New Zealand will have three entrants in one of the blue riband track events. The trio then spoke on the phone to Rod Dixon, the last Nelsonian to compete on the track, in 1972, when he won bronze. "The three of us in the 1500m had a barbecue together to celebrate and Nick called Rod Dixon and we had a really nice speaker phone conversation with him," Julian says. "You could tell by his voice that he was just as excited about it. "We also spoke to Dick Quax and I know, for Hamish and I and probably Nick too, these guys are Gods so to have them be excited and proud of what we've achieved is just crazy." The 28-year-old's first taste of running was at the Colgate

Games as a 12-year-old. He won silver in the 1500m and came second to All Black Ryan Crotty in the 800m. "My primary school teacher at St Joseph's is an avid runner, Mr Tim Cross, and I think he saw something in me at 12-years-old and put me on a training schedule for the South Island Colgate Games." Basketball was his major interest through to 17 until American university running coach from Texas Greg Lautenslager arrived in Nelson in 2002. "Greg played a huge part in instilling the passion in me for running that eventually overran my enthusiasm for basketball.” Julian has been based in America for the past eight years, pushing his running dream and getting a degree in economics. He made the NCAA finals in 2010, running against the best collegiate runners in America. Julian says he's "just scraped by this year" financially, describing himself as a "second tier runner". "It's hard to make ends meet

"I know Nelson has some really good, young runners coming through, so if I can inspire someone and show them that you can make it to the big stage as they watch me on TV, that'd be great."

The population of Tahuna at the last census in 2013 was 2,100, but this number rapidly increases during the Christmas holidays and when the weather is fine in Nelson, you will be hard-pressed to find a parking spot around Tahuna‘s main attraction, the beautiful Tahunanui Beach. The beach was orginally known as the ‘The Sands’ until a competition was run in 1902 to suggest a

World Champs beckon for Kirsten Edwards

Nelson bowler Kirsten Edwards never gave up hope she would make the New Zealand team for the World Championships in Christchurch. The 25-year-old was in the midst of a “quiet winter”, awaiting her honeymoon next month after initially missing selection for the November event. That all changed last week and she spent the weekend in Christchurch, training with the rest of the New Zealand team. The United bowler comes into the team as a replacement for Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mandy Boyd who has had to withdraw for personal reasons.

“It was disappointing to miss out initially, but given the dynamic of the team and Val (Smith) originally selected to play two in the triples and three in the fours with all the experience and success she has had, I understood it. “With Val now going to skip, it gives me an opportunity and one I want to make the most of,” she says. Originally from Wellington, Kirsten says she had accepted she would have to set her sights on the 2018 Commonwealth Games

on the Gold Coast as her next potential major campaign. Kirsten made her international debut in April against Australia, 13 years after taking-up the sport her mum, Leigh Griffin, got her interested in. “She was in our national fours when we won the fours at the start of the year and the previous year she won the singles.” Kirsten says the support she gets from both her work and the United Club is hugely beneficial. “Bowls becomes part of who you are and you spend so long playing the game. I’m lucky I have supportive colleagues and a great club that give me so much support.”

It was appropriate Suburbs Seals earned their second consecutive Nelson Bays division one football league title with a clean sheet. The Seals beat Tahuna 3-0 to win the league with a game to spare. The defending champions conceded just 12 goals in 13 games on their way to the title. The irony being, four of those came in their opening match against club mates Nelson Suburbs Reserves. Captain Hamish Lewis, Neil Connell, Nathan Haymes, Matty Elliott and goal keeper Brett Yates have proven to be a difficult last line of defence to penetrate. Coach Brendan Hodgson says while the team has struggled at times in front of goal, their ability to keep goals out was probably the major key to success. "Considering we've conceded six goals against our other Suburbs team, we've done really well against stronger competition this year." Brendan says the work of Nathan in central defence had been most impressive. "We have experienced guys, but the improvement Nathan has

Clayton eyes two titles at Nelson Motocross Champs

Jacob Page Clayton Roeske is planning on winning both the junior and senior 125cc class at the Nelson Motocross Championships at MotoXpark at 88 Valley Rd near Wakefield this weekend. The 16-year-old finished third overall at the National Battle of the Clubs event in Taupo. The Nayland College pupil currently has a junior ranking of seventh in New Zealand and is keen to dominate the two-day Nelson Championships on his home track. Clayton has been racing since 10 and riding bikes since he was three. “My first memory was the second time I got on a bike, I was just going around on our lawn and I went under a trampoline and smashed my face.” Clayton’s dad Bert used to race bikes and still helps rebuild his son’s Yamaha YZ125 in the garage regularly. Clayton is being mentored by Motueka-based Kiwi motocross legend Josh Coppins. “Back when I was riding 88ccs, I was asked to do a training day with him at his place. “We talked more and more and now I work at his workshop during the holidays. “In the summer he has all his team riders up there and it’s good to get to know them as they’re all senior riders.” Clayton says he would like to race in Australia one day but would also like the opportunity to get the 1NZ on his bike as a national champion. Event co-ordinator Bryan Heaphy says the event will be contested under a new course design, including the new ‘Table-top Alley’ which has two table-top jumps of 23m and 28m respectively. “We’ve also managed to secure the voice of New Zealand motocross, Neil Ritchie, which will be great.” Racing starts at 10.30am on Saturday and 10am Sunday, with the last day featuring the top 20 junior and senior riders racing one-on-one for one lap in an elimination event. A new track layout means spectators are ensured great vantage points which is expected to excite the crowds and provide a challenge for riders.
