Nelson's Dixon returns to inspire next generation Over 40 kids who have participated in New Zealand’s first Rod Dixon Kids Marathon programme got to meet, do a warm up and short run with Rod Dixon at a special session held at the fields at Waimea Intermediate and Henley Primary schools in Richmond last week. Founder of The Rod Dixon Kids Marathon Foundation, Rod’s ambition is to educate kids, their families and communities, the value of exercise, nutrition and active participation that will lead to a lifelong healthy approach to living. The Rod Dixon Kids Marathon programme has a simple but effective goal - kids run a full marathon, 42.2km, over the space of 8-10 weeks, broken down into manageable distances that can be run from scratch, building fitness, endurance and confidence. The kids ran their final mile as part of the 32nd Annual Nelson Shoe Clinic Half Marathon on Sunday. “The programme is all about participation, its not about how fast you run or how far you run its about getting out there and giving it a go – finishing is winning – winning is finishing. Kids Marathon is about
creating a fun environment to develop a lifestyle of healthy exercise and nutrition habits, it also empowers kids with the knowledge and character to achieve in the classroom as well", says Rod, a former Waimea College student. One child that had been looking forward to Thursdays session was 10 year old Jakob Fletcher. Jakob has cerebal palsy, epilepsy and an intellectual disability but this has not stopped him participating in the programme over the last 8 weeks. Jakob's mother, Nicky Fletcher, told of how she has seen Jakob's confidence grow and his enthusiasm build as he has gone through the programme. “At the start he couldn’t even run half way round the field and he thought it was too far and too hard for him. But now he can run twice around it non stop and is even excited about practising because he knows that he can do it. He loves running with a group of other kids – so he's the same as everyone else “ says Nicky. Nelson is the first community to embrace the kids Marathon with it set to be rolled out in other communities later this year.

The Nelson Cake Decorators and Sugar Artists Guild held a demonstation and workshop on Saturday at the Richmond Public Library which was attended by local cake decorating fans. The guild currently has 25 members and held the event so that members of the public could see what the group were about and have a go themselves. Treasurer Bev Schroder says the group meet every month to learn from each other and offer quick tips and hints for successful cake
decorating. "The great thing is you can start off learning the basics and progress into different techniques as you go." More than 30 people attended the workshop with some making the trip over from Blenheim to partake. Stoke local Kirsten Tucker says she had heard about the group before and thought it would be fun to have a go. "It is really great, I though it would be quite hard but it's not, you just do it step by step."
