Message from the PRESIDENT

“The world as we have created is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing out thinking.” Albert Einstein

Notre Dame Schools are thriving. As you will see in this issue of Seasons, our school community is strong. Our Pre-K through 12 enrollment is over 1,200 including 170 freshmen at NDCL and 103 new students at NDES and NDMS. A growing enrollment, EdChoice revenue, LionSGO gifts, and private philanthropy through Giving Day and annual giving paint a strong financial picture for us. Our success in the Capital Campaign updated two science labs, enhanced our stadium and athletic facilities, and expanded into a new middle school wing. Our endowment ensures future students a place at Notre Dame Schools.

Recently I had the joy of meeting some of our alumni— Beverly Rivera `54 in New York City; Dolores Nichta `69 in Ocean Isle, NC; and Terry `63 and Susan Mulligan in Chicago.

While these numbers demonstrate strength, we must make sure it stays strong by recognizing how our world is changing and the impact those changes have on education. Embracing change is essential for the growth of Notre Dame Schools and for our students and the world they will be entering. Having a forward-thinking mindset helps us anticipate future trends and opportunities for our students. Those changes are vital discussion points as we initiate our new strategic plan.

While we recognize and make changes through this plan, we must balance change with respect for our strong culture and the legacies of our founders. This prompts a deliberate look at our course offerings and the impact of AI in the classroom, and the need to be deliberate about ensuring the core values of our founders remain at the core of our Notre Dame culture, as well as part of our decision making.

The need to balance change while retaining our faith-filled culture was affirmed with recent meetings I had with our faculty. Across the board, they voiced the need for us to be responsive to our changing world and the changing needs of our students and the new career worlds they would be entering, but they voiced just as strongly the need to retain the caring, loving, and respectful culture of Notre Dame Schools.

Recently, I have had the opportunity to meet with alumni from Cathedral Latin, Notre Dame Academy, and NDCL. All of them echoed the sentiments of our current teachers. They developed their core values and their faith at their schools, and it was important to them those same core values are developed and cultures they loved will not only continue but thrive at Notre Dame Schools.

The Notre Dame Schools family finds itself in exciting and inspiring times. Reinvigorating our vision for the future through our strategic planning process, while holding firm to our core values as a Catholic faith educational institution is certain to flourish success among our students and cultivate servant leaders for tomorrow. Thank you for sharing your care, love, and hope for our schools.

Letter from the BOARD CHAIR

Greetings Notre Dame Schools Community,

It’s an exciting time on our campus as we work to strengthen our mission through our academics, extracurriculars, culture and facilities. We’re also excited for the progress on the work at our new middle school facilities and are grateful to our many generous donors who have made this possible. We’re offering tours of the work in progress to anyone interested and is considering making a donation to the project.

We welcome five new Board members this year, Dr. Mandy Capel, Eric Rieger, Esq., Kevin Woeste, Tim Bencic `07, and Mike Smith, along with the return of another board member, Frank Cappello. We welcome them and are grateful for the application of their time and expertise in support of our mission.

This year, I’m also excited about the alignment and collaboration of our Board, our President, Dr. Hoynes, and our staff on our new strategic plan. We’re grateful for the blessings that have allowed us to expand and improve on our mission and want to intentionally build off of this over the years to come to continue to be a regional leader in Catholic education. Thank you to all of those who have given their time and expertise to this ongoing endeavor.

Also, please consider this time of year a time to share your blessings with our school. Whether it’s a campaign commitment, a gift on Giving Day, or the tax-credit giving program called LionSGO, there are many ways in which you can also support our mission.

Sincerely,

CHARDON to CHARLOTTE

Mike Simpson `94 reflects on his Notre Dame Schools values and impact on his life today

There’s no doubt that Mike Simpson bleeds blue and gold of NDCL and NDES. And, mix in a bit of red and blue for his Dayton Flyers. The 1994 NDCL graduate (and 1990 NDES graduate) who grew up in the shadows of Chardon square is the COO of Artisanal Brewing Ventures based in Charlotte, NC. A job, and an industry, that few would find boring.

Simpson is responsible for brewing, packaging, quality, health and safety, transportation and logistics. Artisanal owns three breweries, two cideries, and one distillery over four states (NC, VA, PA, and NY), its most well-known being Southern Tier Brewing Company. In addition, Artisanal owns 16 taprooms in OH, PA, NY, VA, NC, including the Southern Tier Taproom in downtown Cleveland.

But what got him to Artisanal was a connection through Dayton.

“Our CEO (John Coleman) is a University of Dayton grad,” Simpson says. “And his uncle is a Marianist. After completing the exit of a startup and finishing my MBA at Duke University, I was seeking a larger role in an exciting industry. The Artisanal opportunity was something I couldn’t pass up.”

Just as important as his professional path, Simpson’s family and Catholic values are the center of his life. With Mike’s 17 years of Catholic schooling, he and his wife Amber

knew they wanted to send their 3 children to Catholic schools. All three—Kinsey, Duncan, and Bridget--are currently enrolled at Charlotte Catholic High School.

“Amber and I met while sophomores at the University of Dayton. Sending our kids to Catholic school was important for us. Everyone is looking for an identity, a community. Catholic schools are its own little community. How we treat each other is rooted in our Catholic faith. In North Carolina, there are not nearly as many Catholic schools as the Cleveland area. That is something very special about Ohio, the opportunities for Catholic education are abundant.”

Living in Charlotte most of his adult life, Simpson loves the proximity to mountains and beach, and the mild climate. But, does miss a few things about Cleveland.

“The die-hard sports teams are something I miss,” he says. “In Charlotte, you see half the stands filled with visiting fans and it’s just not the same. I also miss the grit and toughness of NE Ohio. In NC we might get a little frost on our windshields but nothing like the 4-wheel drive we needed for Chardon winters.”

Simpson is the middle child of parents Duncan and Karen Simpson. His older sister, Laura, was a 1991 NDCL graduate. His brother, Bryan, graduated from NDCL in 1998. All three went through Notre Dame Elementary School.

“My parents were chairs of some of the early Lions Mane Events,” he recalls fondly. “And they made us work! I remember going to some of the local Chardon businesses to pick up donations, auction items, and gift certificates. Before the auction our dining room would always be full of various gift baskets staging them for the event.”

Simpson credits his parents for the foundation of his success in life and as a husband and father.

“After 42-years my dad was fortunate to retire from the company that he started at (Sajar Plastics). My mom was a stay-at-home mom. They made time for all of us. My dad coached our teams, and they were our biggest fans—me and Bryan were very into sports and Laura in dance and theater. Chardon is a big enough community yet small enough where you can make an impact. Later in life, my mom served for 16-years on council in Chardon, including 4-years as mayor. Chardon remains a very special place to us.”

As much as family played a vital role for him growing up and today, Simpson credits his Notre Dame and Dayton education as pivotal to where he is today and his hopes for the future.

“I read Seasons and follow the success of the school as much as I possibly can,” he says. “To see NDCL grow from its early years to today—37 years later—is incredible. I see the academic rigor staying strong, I see some of the sports teams having success on the field, and I see the Notre Dame community as close as ever. It has been great to see the Notre Dame Schools umbrella that includes both the Elementary and NDCL develop to where it has.”

Simpson cites a memory involving Mr. Charles Calovini, NDCL’s Dean of Students while he was a student, as an important moment in his life that he looks back on.

“I was serving detention and decided to write Mr. Calovini a letter,” he says. “The letter said something along the lines of ‘you have a tough job, all that you have to do, but I appreciate it’. Years later at my wedding, he told me he still held onto that letter. He wanted me to know it was something he appreciated a student doing. I’ve never forgotten that. It’s people like him that make this school special.”

What are his hopes for today’s Lions?

“Go out and try new things, go after things you want to do. Use your faith, your education, your connections to tackle everything you want to do. Show appreciation to those who help you along the way. Don’t worry about pushing into the unknown.”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE BOARD? I believe that my personal growth was strongly influenced by my experiences as a student at Cathedral Latin. The lessons from my teachers and the relationships with other students helped me establish good “life values” that continue to guide me. Being a member of the Notre Dame Schools Board allows me to “give back” to an organization that has so positively influenced my life.

WHAT

MAKES

THE

NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS COMMUNITY EXCEPTIONAL?

The Notre Dame Community focuses on faith formation and educating students for a life of learning and service to others. The students receive great and varied classroom experiences but also have the benefit of athletic, performing arts, retreats, and many service-learning opportunities. The campus has great facilities and wonderful faculty and staff members to guide the students. This campus is truly a special place.

YOUR HOPE FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION,

PARTICULARLY AT OUR SCHOOLS OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS: I was so pleased when the Sisters of Notre Dame invited Cathedral Latin to join this educational community. My hope is that through continued strong enrollment and, sustained support from parents and alumni, NDCL will continue to thrive offering future students the opportunity of an exceptional faith-based education.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE

BOARD? My father-in-law Rick Cavolo`74 approached me about joining while he was on the Board. It served as a great way to reconnect with the community after moving back to Cleveland from Chicago. I also had a great appreciation for the education I received at NDCL, and the people I met through the community that led me to want to give back. When I left NDCL to attend the University of Notre Dame I was really well prepared. I also met my husband, Rick, through our time at NDCL, and other students who are still some of my best friends to this day.

The Sisters of Notre Dame have set an incredible example for us all in this perspective.

JOELLE COATES takes the helm as NDMS PRINCIPAL

Thirty years after starting her teaching career in a third grade classroom at Notre Dame Elementary School, Joelle Coates is now in Middle School—as the new principal of Notre Dame Middle School.

“It hit me, I’m principal to kids of kids that I taught,” Coates says with a smile. “It shows that we are doing something right here, with generations of families coming through these doors. These last four years, Dr. (Jacqueline) Hoynes took this school to the next level.”

Hoynes served as principal of Notre Dame Elementary and Middle School from 2020 until this past summer, as she moved into her new role as Notre Dame Schools President. This fall, the new leadership model of two principals— one for Notre Dame Elementary School

Coates grew up in South Euclid and graduated from Brush High School. She received her degree from Notre Dame College with a major in Elementary Education and minor in Social Studies. She and her husband, Kevin, have two children who are both graduates of NDES and NDCL: Christopher `19 and Jenna `20. Joelle and Kevin met while in 6th grade camp at Camp Hiram. Kevin recently began his 2nd stint as Athletic Director at NDES/MS.

Coates went into education to make a difference in the lives of young people. She believes that education isn’t just in textbooks and report cards, but also mentally, physically, and spiritually. It was during her time as a student teacher at NDES (while enrolled at Notre Dame College) that Coates realized the ‘secret sauce’ that makes the school special.

“The presence of the Sisters of Notre Dame just makes this place different, and so very special,” Coates says.

“Everyone wants to be here, and you can just feel that. I felt it 30 years ago when Sr. Margaret Hartman and Sr. Jean Hoelke hired me. You know you’re in a good place here.”

What excites Coates the most about her new role is the growth and exciting future of Notre Dame Middle School.

“The foundation that this school lays out for our young people gets me excited about this new role. And now, connecting with those that I taught as little 3rd graders as their principal— that gets me going every day!”

Notre Dame Elementary School welcomes FRIEDERIKE WINTERSTELLER to our school community

New NDES principal mirrors SND journey from Coesfeld to Chardon

New NDES Principal Friederike Wintersteller shares similar roots with the Sisters of Notre Dame. The native of Germany hails from the region near Coesfeld where the SNDs originated before settling in NE Ohio. It’s no surprise that her admiration led her to the doors of Notre Dame Elementary School.

“I’ve always been inspired by the mission of the Sisters, and the school’s reputation for academic excellence,” she says. “My welcome to this school community from teachers to students and parents has been wonderful. I can tell early on how much they care about the school.”

This fall, the new leadership model of two principals—one for Notre Dame Elementary School (through Grade 5) and one for Notre Dame Middle School (grades 6 to 8) took shape. Previous to joining NDES, Wintersteller served as principal of St. Mary Chardon School, Special Education Coordinator of the Educational Service Center of the Western Reserve, and Curriculum and Instruction Specialist at St. Gabriel’s School in Concord. The opportunity to continue the rich legacy of the Sisters of Notre Dame was a catalyst for her to seek this role.

NEWS AND NOTES FROM CAMPUS

Longtime teacher Maureen Wahl retires after 46 years

After 46 years as a teacher at Notre Dame Academy and NDCL, Maureen Wahl retired this past summer. After receiving an all-school “clap out” in May, Ms. Wahl was celebrated with a retirement party at Lion Stadium in September, a place she coached hundreds of student-athletes in track for decades, and was selected to the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

“After spending 47 years in education, I plan on spending time with my family—especially my grandnieces and grandnephews. Their love and curiosity bring me joy.”

Kairos #38 shines for 44 students at Camp Burton

Over 4 days and 3 nights in late September, 44 NDCL junior and seniors reflected, celebrated their faith, and bonded through God’s goodness at the Kairos retreat at Camp Burton. The culmination of the retreat was Saturday Mass at NDCL attended by retreatants’ parents, with some students sharing their witness of the retreat. Kairos is a unique opportunity for students to unplug and focus on themselves and their relationship with God and with each other.

NDCL Class of 2024 Invited to their first “reunion” on campus November 26th

It’s back! After a number of years away, the yearbook pickup/reunion for our youngest alumni is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26th beginning at 3:30pm. Come and share your 1st semester college journey with classmates and NDCL. Pizza and pop provided in the Eugene `54 and Barbara Trela Dining Commons. Start the long Thanksgiving weekend off with a mini-reunion.

NEWS AND NOTES FROM CAMPUS

Alumni return to share their faith and justice witness with NDCL students

Lori (Valyko `86) Weber and Katie (Skolaris `03) Mooney visited NDCL in September to speak with students in our Faith and Justice class. Mooney encouraged the students to pay attention to what she describes as a "God Wink"—those moments when you feel guided to help others. In 2014, she founded Cleveland Kindness, an organization devoted to spreading compassion throughout the community. Weber is making a difference with her organization, NPower Services, which helps integrate adults with special needs into their communities.

Middle Schoolers experiment with “solar oven” to make s’mores

In a unique science experiment, NDMS 6th graders worked in teams to design a solar oven which were placed outside to see how effective they would be at making s'mores. Before setting the solar ovens out, students measured the diameter and width of the chocolate and marshmallows. When they went outside to see what happened over the course of two hours, students had to measure the chocolate and marshmallows again to see if there were any changes in size. Students used the measurements and observations to assess the effectiveness of their project and reflect on things that worked and things that didn't. Of course, the best part was eating the s'mores when they were done measuring!

ND Preschoolers are “Apple Experts” thanks to Patterson Fruit Farm

Mrs. Fedor's pre-school class enjoyed a special visit from "Grandma Connie" from Patterson Fruit Farm. Students tasted cider, ate an apple, and did apple stamping with our volunteer Mrs. Skolaris. What an enjoyable day this was!

Giving to Notre Dame Schools at the Marian Society Leadership Level has a profound impact on our mission to educate leaders who transform the world and for the educational experience of our 1,211 students on campus!

Making a leadership-level gift to Notre Dame Schools provides opportunities for:

• Innovative Programs: Leadership-level donations allow the school to offer cutting-edge programs in areas like STEM, music & arts, athletics, and leadership development.

• Teacher Development: Leadership gifts fund opportunities for educators to learn new methods, attend conferences, and continue their own growth, ensuring students receive a world-class education.

• Building a Legacy: Leadership gifts often fund long-term projects such as new buildings, labs, sports facilities, or endowments that serve students and faculty for generations.

• Enhanced Facilities: Leadership gifts contribute to the development of state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, athletic facilities, and arts spaces that inspire creativity and learning.

• Extracurricular Growth: Leadership donations help support sports teams, clubs, music programs, and other activities that develop students’ life skills and passions.

• Technology Integration: In a fast-changing world, staying ahead in technology is crucial. Leadership donations allow the school to invest in the latest educational technologies, ensuring that students are prepared for future careers and opportunities.

• Join the Marian Society today with your leadership gift to the NDCL Fund, NDES Fund or Giving Day.

Redirect your state tax dollars to Notre Dame Schools

LionSGO allows donors to support NDCL and NDES/MS while receiving a dollar-for-dollar tax credit, capped at $750 for individuals or $1,500 for couples filing jointly. In 2023, LionSGO donors totaled nearly $250,000 for Notre Dame Schools!

Why give your $$ to Columbus when you can re-direct your dollars to families who wish for a Catholic education on our campus? LionSGO dollars go directly to financial aid, assisting families with the greatest demonstrated need.

"Here’s a few testimonials we got last year: "

Here’s how easy it is to do this:

MAKE your gift to LionSGO Online at www.lionsgo.org

Mail a check (made to Notre Dame Schools Scholarship Granting Organization) to: LionSGO, 13000 Auburn Road, Chardon, OH 44024

RECEIVE your gift acknowledgement and receipt from Notre Dame Schools

FILE your state of Ohio taxes, be sure to include your gift amount to “Scholarship Granting Organizations” during the 2024 tax year.

GET your state refund including your LionSGO gift!

" Keven, thanks for telling me about this tax-credit. I can’t believe I didn’t do this the year before!”

This is something everybody should be doing—parents of current students, parents of alumni, Latin, Notre Dame Academy, and NDCL alumni. Such a gift!”

I wasn’t sure at first, then a bunch of other people did it and so did I. I gave my gift, then a few months later received it back on my state income tax refund.”

I can’t believe how easy this is!”

PERSPECTIVE : Service in Action

Labre, L’Arche, Joseph of Arimathea Society, Miracle League. Our students serving our brothers and sisters in the community.

This year, take time to take care of those you love

Updating your will to include Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School or Notre Dame Elementary School is easier than ever.

Or, maybe you’ve already included the school in your written estate plan.

It’s as simple as this: include “Notre DameCathedral Latin School” or “Notre Dame Elementary School” as a beneficiary in your will. You can choose a percentage (%) or dollar amount ($) that the school will receive from your estate after your lifetime.

Did you know? Most estate gifts for Catholic schools and colleges and universities are the largest gifts they’ll ever receive. As a matter of fact, NDCL’s largest gift in history is from an estate.

When you let us know about your intentions, you become part of The Notre Dame Circle, our recognition society for those who plan to leave an estate gift to NDCL or NDES.

This time of year, when you gather with friends and family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, think about gigiving the Gift of a Lifetime that will further Catholic education for years to come!

There’s no better time than now to take care of your estate plan by including those you love—family, friends, and charity.
