A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear NDP Parents and Students, Welcome to the 2022-23 school year. We are delighted that you have decided to join the NDP family! Our theme for this year is “Discovering Excellence” and that means seeking out God’s plan and to uncover the gifts He has given each of us, in hopes that we will go forth and share those gifts with the world. To me, excellence in a school means that our students learn what the teachers intend for them to learn and the teachers will assess and intervene when needed or enrich the lessons when students need a greater challenge. Each year we produce Saints 101 as your “bible” for all things NDP-related. This booklet is a valuable resource where you can seek and find information about school policies and personnel quickly and easily. This book will: • Introduce you to our school leadership and new faculty and staff members. • Explain our school policies and dress code. • Highlight our academics, school culture and the many ways students and parents can get involved. At the back of the book, there is a list of important dates so that you can mark your calendar in advance. Please note that from time to time it is necessary to change the date of an event, so it is good practice to visit our school calendar regularly for the most up-to-date information. When we make changes or have news to share, we will inform you in a timely manner using our website, social media, newsletters, text messages and emails. Please be sure to read all our communications so that you stay informed. When you visit our website, you will find that some pages are geared to prospective families, while others were designed with you in mind. FAMILY CONTACT INFORMATION Notre Dame Preparatory uses the family contact information submitted in Powerschool. Please ensure that all information is updated at the beginning of each school year by visiting ndpsaints.powerschool.com/public. All families must confirm personal information for each of their students by August 2, 2022. ATTENDANCE

Please review the attendance policy below and refer to the handbook for more details. Our absence/tardy policies have been updated for the 2022-23 school year. 1. The state of Arizona requires by law [ARS 15-803(B)] that all students attend school 90% of the school year. Students who miss 10% or more of classes may jeopardize earning credit in each class in which they have excessive absences. CONSEQUENCES FOR ABSENCES PER CLASS PER SEMESTER

2. Please familiarize yourself with the entire attendance policy and make note of the procedures in the following areas: a. A parent or legal guardian must fill out the online attendance form prior to the student’s arrival for students arriving late at ndpsaints.org/attendance. b. For students leaving school early, a parent or legal guardian must fill out the online attendance form at ndpsaints.org/attendance. c. Students may NOT leave school with anyone other than their parents without written permission from the student’s parent or legal guardian. 3. Liturgies are an important part of life at Notre Dame Preparatory and a requirement for all students. ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY

1. Our primary purpose as an educational institution is academics. Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to participate in any co-curricular activities at Notre Dame Preparatory. Please see the Student/Parent Handbook for more details at ndpsaints.org/handbook. 2. Students are ineligible if they have earned one F or two Ds. The first eligibility report will be pulled 6 weeks after the beginning of the semester and will then be pulled weekly. Students will be ineligible for a period of 7 days. They will be unable to participate in games, club meetings, or performances during the window of ineligibility.

COVID PROTOCOLS

We will continue to follow the current CDC guidelines with regards to COVID. 1. Masks will not be required in classrooms or outside on campus. A student may wear a mask if he/she wishes. 2. Classes will all be in person. 3. There will be no synchronous online learning, however, teachers will record classes for absent students to view asynchronously after school. 4. All students and faculty MUST stay home if they are sick. 5. This policy could change if COVID numbers rise.

DELIVERIES

Fostering responsibility in our students and keeping the campus safe are essential to our mission. Students should come to school fully prepared for the day. For the safety and protection of our NDP community, the front office will not accept any items or drop-offs. This includes food, beverage, technology, and homework. Please do not try to bypass this policy by leaving items outside the gates or passing items over the fence.

The Diocesan Code of Discipline directs that “Parents or legal guardians are expected to support teachers and administrators and to recognize that disciplinary action entails the exercise of judgment, often under pressing circumstances.” (Diocesan Handbook 3-1.4.17 C.4). Serious consideration is given to every disciplinary action taken.

NURSE’S OFFICE

We recognize parents as the primary educators of their children. Notre Dame Preparatory needs, expects and requires honest and consistent cooperation to implement the spirit as well as the letter of the Student/Parent Handbook’s guidelines and rules.

1. In the event of illness or injury while at school, students MUST report to the Nurse’s Office for evaluation. 2. The nurse will determine the condition and disposition of the student and decide if the student should go home or stay at school. 3. The nurse, not the student, will contact the parents regarding a student’s health. No student may use his/her cell phone to request a pick-up. All arrangements must go through the school nurse. 4. A documented immunization record is required by Arizona Law for all students attending school. No student will be permitted to begin classes until this requirement is met. 5. The nurse is not permitted to administer any medication to students without written authorization from the parent/guardian. This includes acetaminophen, ibuprofen, Tums, cough drops and antibiotic creams. 6. Diocese policy prohibits the nurse from providing or dispensing any medications without written permission from the student’s parent or guardian. Medications must be brought to the Health Office in the original sealed and labeled container. All medication must be accompanied by a signed medication form in order for medication of any kind to be administered by Health Office personnel. A new form must be completed and signed each school year.

Please reference the Student/Parent Handbook for more details at ndpsaints.org/handbook. 3. If, in the opinion of the principal, either a student’s or a parent’s/guardian’s actions, attitudes, or behavior are found in conflict with the school’s mission, policies or any specific directive of the administration or if parents/guardians or students fail to cooperate and comply with Notre Dame Prep’s disciplinary policy or practice, the student may be barred from continued enrollment at Notre Dame Preparatory.

DRUG TESTING

1. For the health and well-being of our students, Notre Dame Preparatory is an alcohol, tobacco, vape and drug-free campus. 2. The use, possession, sharing or selling of prescription or nonprescription drugs, alcohol, tobacco or vape cigarettes is strictly prohibited on or off campus and could result in withdrawal from Notre Dame Prep. 3. Notre Dame Preparatory conducts mandatory random drug testing for all students on campus. Students may be testing any day for any reason. 4. If a student is found to have taken or in possession of a banned substance or drug paraphernalia, he/she will undergo a formal evaluation which may result in mandatory counseling, suspension, withdrawal or dismissal.

1. PE Uniforms will be distributed in PE class the first week of school. 2. Students may not wear any part of the Notre Dame Prep PE uniform in any class other than physical education.

STUDENT LUNCH PROGRAM

3. Each student will be provided with a small PE locker to keep their uniform and personal items. 4. A combination lock will be provided from the PE department. If a student loses his/her lock, he/she will have to purchase a new one 5. The cost of the uniform is T-shirt $10, Shorts $10, Dance T-Shirt (Check with Instructor for Fee). 6. The PE uniform fee will be automatically added to the student’s Smart Tuition account. 7. Replacement PE uniforms will be available in the Saints Store.

1. NDP is a cashless campus for meal purchases. 2. Student ID cards come with a barcode so that cards can be loaded through K12 Payments. 3. To create an account and to reload funds onto student ID cards for on-campus meals, go to k12paymentcenter.com and create your family account. 4. For your convenience the student meal plan link can be found easily on our website or mobile app under Quick Links - Student Meal Plans. 5. PARKING INFORMATION

TECHNOLOGY

1. Parking permits may be purchased at any time starting July 5 and picked up in the new COMM (former CCI), starting on August 10 during normal school hours. 2. Permits may be picked up in Dean Viliborghi’s office, located in the Administration builiding. 3. All students must complete the vehicle registration form found on our website at ndpsaints.org/quicklinks/parkingpermit and pay the fee before they can pick up their parking permit. 4. Students will pay either the fullyear amount or the half-year amount regardless of when they purchase their permit. The school will not pro-rate midsemester purchases. 5. Students will be assigned a parking spot for the entire school year in one of our student parking lots. Only the permit holder may park in that assigned spot. 6. Seniors who purchased a parking spot in May and plan to give that spot a custom paint job, our official painting days will be Thursday, Aug. 4, 5-8am.; Saturday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 8 a.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 13 (make-up day) from 5-10 a.m. Contact our senior coordinator, Mrs. Lachvayder with questions regarding senior parking spot painting at (480) 634-8336 or email at mlachvayder@ndpsaints.org.

1. At NDP, technology is integrated into all aspects of the curriculum. All students are required to provide their own laptops. 2. The IT department assists with troubleshooting, but the student is responsible for repairs to their personal devices. For IT help, email helpdesk@ndpsaints.org. 3. All new students will need to set up an appointment with IT in late July or early August to gain access to their school accounts and receive information about academic applications (Canvas and PowerSchool).

There are three tuition payment plans available: • One-time tuition paid in full by July 15. • Two-installment payment plan paid by July 15 and December 15. • Ten monthly installments (July through April.) 2. For more information, visit our website at ndpsaints.org/tuition. 5. For students earning STO money, the first round of awards (payments) are sent to NDP in July. 6. The finance office will apply awards directly to students’ accounts within a week of receiving the funds.

1. Dressing appropriately demonstrates pride in personal appearance while upholding our three R’s: Reverence, Respect and Responsibility. Our dress code promotes good taste and is in line with modest contemporary standards for a Catholic high school. 2. All uniform clothing must be purchased at Anton Uniforms or our used uniform sales. 3. SPIRIT

GIRLS must wear a uniform skirt to the knee, oxford buttondown shirt and dress shoes (no white-bottom shoes). BOYS must wear long khaki pants, oxford shirt, a black or brown belt and dress shoes (no white-bottom shoes) and either the traditional striped NDP tie or the purple and black tie introduced in 2019.

GIRLS may wear the uniform skirt to the knee or bermudalength shorts (khaki or blackwith school polo tucked in. Belts are required with shorts. BOYS may wear uniform shorts (plaid, khaki or black) with school polo shirt tucked in. Shorts must be worn with a black, brown or white belt (no logos).

ACADEMICS ACADEMICS & ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Notre Dame Prep offers a wide variety of learning programs to suit the needs of students with varying learning styles. These programs are designed to help our students succeed. For information on all of our programs, contact your student’s counselor or go to ndpsaints.org/academics.

ACADEMIC HONORS NDP offers Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude programs to encourage students to challenge themselves in the classroom and prepare themselves for rigorous college and university curriculums. Learn more at ndpsaints.org/academic-honors.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT The Advanced Placement (AP) program was created by College Board to give high school students the chance to tackle college-level work. Students taking AP classes are required to take the College Board’s AP tests in May with the goal of earning college credit and placement. AP courses are offered in social studies, world languages, science, math and English. Students interested in Advanced Placement (AP) courses must meet the prerequisites of each course. Refer to the Program of Studies on our website and talk to your student’s counselor. Learn more about AP programs at ap.collegeboard.org.

DUAL ENROLLMENT Notre Dame Prep partners with Scottsdale Community College and the University of Arizona to allow students to earn college credit while attending high school. These courses are taught by certified NDP teachers here on our campus, and the credits transfer to many colleges and universities in the state of Arizona and beyond. For more information, discuss with your student’s counselor and read about the options in the Program of Studies on our website.

EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA The St. Aloysius Gonzaga Program assists those students who demonstrate academic potential and a desire to learn but need extra support navigating NDP’s college preparatory curriculum successfully. EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS (CONT.) ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER Named after St. Joseph the Worker, patron saint of families, fathers and laborers, the St. Joseph the Worker Program offers academic support services for college-bound students with diagnosed learning differences. The St. Joseph the Worker Program services include classroom accommodations as appropriate according to students’ individual student support plans. THOMAS AQUINAS The St. Thomas Aquinas Scholar Program is a highly competitive, integrated program of study that provides a challenging, well-rounded education for our most gifted and motivated students. ACADEMIC INTERVENTION ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER (ARC) The Academic Resource Center provides support to students with identified learning challenges. The ARC faculty provides specific academic support/tutoring as well as ongoing one-to-one coaching and feedback for academic growth and skill development. Student Support Plans may be developed for students with learning disabilities to provide academic accommodations for classes and for standardized testing such as the SAT and/or ACT at ndpsaints.org/academics/academic-support. BECOMING AN EXPERT LEARNER is a required course at NDP for all first-year students who have been diagnosed with specific learning disabilities. After evaluating a student’s progress over his or her first semester attending NDP, each student will be reassessed to see if the class will be needed for the following semester. This class helps students learn study skills, time management, organization, self-advocacy and goal-setting. These students also receive academic support through mini-lessons and one-to-one advising. MATH LABS Math Labs are open every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday after school in room 808 for students to work on math homework and study for tests. Students may come individually or with friends for homework help and/or math tutoring, and the room is staffed with NDP math teachers and NHS tutors ready to help and answer questions. OFFICE HOURS and WIN (WHAT I NEED) TIME After school, teachers are available until 3:30 p.m. on regular block schedule days to assist students seeking help with their studies. Please check each teacher’s Canvas page for their specific availability. Twice a week, teachers are also available during WIN Time, which is a designated time during the school day for students to work with teachers for additional help and practice. PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT CONFERENCES We hold one parent-teacher-student conference night on campus each year in the fall. This year, the conferences will be held by teacher invitation specifically for those students who need some intervention, support, or a plan for improvement. Students will be required to accompany their parents to the conferences. More details will be made available about these conferences in late August. ACADEMIC INTERVENTION (CONT.) TESTING CENTER Located in the ARC, our Testing Center is a quiet environment where students who require extended time for testing can go to complete their classroom exams and standardized tests without distraction or interruption. For more information, please visit: ndpsaints.org/academics/academic-support. TUTORING Free tutoring is available to all students by members of the National Honor Society. Please check with your House Captains for more details. Tutoring is provided during lunch hours, as well as before and after school, in Math Labs, and other times virtually. Students who are struggling or receiving failing grades should avail themselves of this valuable service.

BELL SCHEDULES NDP’s daily schedule is a block schedule. Studies show that a block schedule allows for in-depth instruction, application, feedback and reflection, thus maximizing student learning success. The Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday schedule incorporates four block-period classes, House or WIN time, break, and lunch periods. The Wednesday schedule is unique with a later start to the day. Students attend all eight classes for shorter time periods. To allow for teacher professional development, first period will begin at 8:30 a.m. and students will be dismissed from school at 2:30 p.m. We will have special bell schedules for all-school Mass days (see below). Occasionally during the school year, we will have four-day weeks where we have either Monday or Friday off due to a holiday. On weeks such as these, we will have only block schedule days. For example: • Monday, Sept. 5 - Labor Day (No School) • Tuesday, Sept. 6 - Block Schedule (Periods 1-4) • Wednesday, Sept. 7 - Block Schedule (Periods 5-8) • Thursday, Septs. 8 - Block Schedule (Periods 1-4) • Friday, Sept. 9 - Block Schedule (Periods 5-8) If the holiday falls on Friday, the schedule will look like this: • Monday - Block Schedule (Periods 1-4) • Tuesday- Block Schedule (Periods 5-8) • Wednesday - Block Schedule (Periods 1-4) • Thursday - Block Schedule (Periods 5-8) • Friday - (No School) VIRTUAL DAYS Virtual Days are mandatory online student learning days. Students are required to log into Canvas by 8 a.m. and complete the lessons assigned for each period. Virtual days contain content for periods 1-8. Students can work at their own pace on virtual days. Here is a list of all the virtual days for the coming school year: • Aug. 26 – Teacher In-Service • Oct. 7 – Diocesan Educator Day • Nov. 7 – Teacher In-Service • Nov. 11 – 8th Grade Day • Feb. 9 & 10 - Virtual School Days - WMPO We will communicate via the newsletter, website calendar and text messages when special schedules are coming up.

BELL SCHEDULES

PICK-UP/DROP-OFF TRAFFIC FLOW All traffic on NDP’s Loop Road will be one-way from SOUTH to NORTH in the morning and afternoon. A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAPLAIN Hello! My Friends in Christ, Discovering Excellence is a fitting theme for 2022-23 and always. Learning and mastering academic skills are vitally important to your personal growth and the well-being of our world. Ignorance can wreak such havoc, while excellence, in both learning and humbly following Jesus Christ, can bring about peace, love and human connectiveness. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said, “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” My hope for this year is that we will all discover excellence in each other and ourselves. Our exceptionalism can be a well-spring of joy that will emanate from our campus and bring about true conversion for our world. I am excited to take this journey with all of you as I embark on this new experience as your chaplain. Helping others learn to follow Jesus Christ is my greatest joy and desire. This year we want to continue forming our community by reminding ourselves of all the good that is around us and working to eliminate that which is bad. If we start expecting excellence of ourselves and work to overcome our shortcomings, I know that we will accomplish the Mission of Jesus and His Church and truly become One Body in Christ. CULTURE

We encourage our students to seek and discover ways to become examples of living a life modeled after Jesus Christ; accepting, loving and inclusive. In this ever-connected world, teens are more isolated than ever before. We combat this phenomenon on two fronts: the House System where mentoring relationships are built, and the Dog Pound Student Council where student, community and school spirit are promoted.

THE HOUSE SYSTEM

Our student body is grouped into 8 Houses. These Houses build community, mentorship, discipleship and opportunities for growth and leadership. Guided by the Coordinator of Student Culture, Sarah Hopkins, students develop leadership skills to become the best versions of themselves while living authentic lives that are true to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The purpose of the House System is to ensure that every student and adult on our campus has a community who cares and holds them accountable to be the person God created them to be. The goals are to find and foster the brilliance in each student and to give each soul on campus a place where they are embraced by their fellow House members while building deeper relationships with Jesus Christ and each other. At Notre Dame Prep, we seek to educate the whole student; mind, body and soul. The House System allows students to be recognized for more than GPA or athletic achievements. Within their House, students’ talents are explored and nurtured by a built-in support system. Each House consists of four smaller groups called Families. House time occurs twice a week where students meet in their families for authentic interpersonal interaction and fellowship. The Houses compete for the coveted House Cup each year by earning House Points through academics, Christian service and school spirit, while showing Reverence, Respect and Responsibility toward each other. STUDENT ACTIVITIES CLUBS We offer more than 30 student-led clubs at NDP for students who have hobbies beyond athletics and academics. From the Medical Club and E-Sports to Saints for Life and Diversity Student Union; there is something for everyone! Students are encouraged to join a club early as a way to make friends who share their passions and interests. If a club of interest does not exist, students are encouraged to create one with other like-minded individuals. Dog Pound Student Council members are elected student leaders who are responsible for planning student activities, dances and for igniting school spirit at athletic events and around campus. The Dog Pound Student Council will be charged with specifically developing and implementing plans for dances, pep rallies and the effective and appropriate running of our student spirit section.

ATHLETICS

The Notre Dame Preparatory athletic programs are part of the fabric of the NDP community with more than 80% of students participating in AIA or club sports. NDP competes locally, regionally and nationally in 27 interscholastic sports and activities. We are very proud of our athletic tradition and success, winning 56 state championships. Our commitment is to provide young men and women with dynamic opportunities for personal growth and formation through athletics that will impact each of them for a lifetime. ARTS ARTS PROGRAMS Art and music are creative expressions of God’s love for us. At NDP we offer many classes in performing, digital, visual and media arts. We celebrate each group throughout the year. Individually, the groups compete in local and regional competitions and perform acts of charity for those who are sick or those who may not otherwise have access to music, song, dance or art. In performing arts, we offer choir, jazz ensemble, guitar orchestra, drama and dance. We hold classes and performances in the St. Catherine of Bologna Performing Arts Center, named after the patron saint of the arts. Our visual arts department offers classes in drawing, painting, pottery/ceramics and mosaic disciplines. AUCTION FASHION SHOW The Auction Fashion Show is our largest fundraiser of the year and gives our entire community a night of good times and glamour while supporting our mission. CTC - The corporate tax credit can direct 100% of your company’s tax liability to Notre Dame Prep, provided the company files an AZ 120, 120A or 120S form. FUN-RAISERS CULINARY FESTIVAL

GRANDPARENTS DAY Grandparents have always been a part of the Notre Dame Prep story. Many are Saints fans and school supporters. Each year, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, we host a complimentary luncheon with NDP students and their grandparents. Registration for this event begins in October.

CASINO NIGHT Dads’ Club organizes the NDP Casino Night complete with live music, food, drinks, prizes and, of course, Vegas-style gaming. We encourage parents to bring their friends to this 21+ event. The evening is full of fun and excitement for our community and beyond.

PARENT & ALUMNI VOLUNTEERS

At Notre Dame Prep, the partnership between NDP faculty, staff, alumni and parents is vital to the growth and success of our students and institution. We invite parents and alumni to volunteer, join our parent and alumni associations and give generously of their time, talent, and treasure to advance our school’s mission and vision.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING The first step to becoming a volunteer is taking the Safe Environment Training (SET) through the Diocese of Phoenix. All parent and/or alumni volunteers MUST attend one SET introductory class or annually renew their SET training through the Diocese of Phoenix to be cleared to work on campus. Classes and renewals must be taken after July 1, 2022. To get started, visit phoenix. cmgconnect.org.

VOLUNTEER CHECK-IN

For the safety of our campus, all parent volunteers and visitors MUST sign in and sign out at the front desk. There are no exceptions.

PARENT & ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS Mothers’ Guild, Dads’ Club, and The Alumni Association serve as vehicles for parents and alumni to engage in the life of the school and bolster their NDP experience. Involved parents and alumni share in the fun and lasting friendship of our community. Through these organizations, parents and alumni can volunteer, socialize, pray and grow the NDP family. The Dads’ Club Three for Me program helps parents find diverse ways to volunteer at school and in the community—both of which support student learning. Our dads can volunteer when they have time: during the day, in the evening or on the weekends. To facilitate this volunteerism, we ask that all NDP dads sign up to be a member of the Dads’ Club. Part of your membership includes an understanding that you will commit three hours of your time for any number of the activities that are listed on the Sign-up Genius. Once you sign up, the Dads’ Club Coordinator of Community Service will contact you to remind you of the upcoming service. The Sign-up Genius will be updated throughout the year as additional service opportunities arise.

FUNDRAISING & OUTREACH EVENT VOLUNTEERS

The Advancement Office uses parent and alumni volunteers for our annual fundraising and community building events including Culinary Festival, Golf Tournament, Alumni Hall of Fame, Homecoming Tailgate, Christmas and Easter Community Outreach and Auction Fashion Show.
