REFLECTING BACK ON THE 2018-19 school year, the year of Mercy and Grace, I am struck by the impact of our wonderful community. Our seniors led the student body with grace beyond their years as the “founding fathers and mothers” of our new House System. Our House Captains made the first year of implementation more inclusive and family-orientated than I could have imagined. Of course, they were guided by our excellent Heads of Houses and all the faculty and staff who helped bring the students’ vision to fruition. At the risk of sounding cliché, I can honestly say I’m going to miss these student leaders. They were inspiring, motivating and hardworking. They embraced our pillars of Reverence, Respect and Responsibility and set the bar high for future classes to emulate. In August of 2018, we welcomed students from more than 40 public and private high schools and middle schools, and six different countries, including Canada, Mexico, China, South Korea and South Africa. Our 900-plus students were taught by 85 full-time faculty members who nurtured them—mind, body and soul. Most of our faculty have earned advanced degrees in their field of study; 55 have earned master’s degrees and five have earned their Ph.D. Our motto, “Strengthening Minds, Bodies and Souls” laid the foundation for our

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY Last year we spent months discerning and crafting our new mission and vision statements to better reflect who we are and what we want to accomplish. Forming and strengthening each student, mind, body and soul, is the breadth and substance of who we are as a Catholic college preparatory high school. The following are our revised mission and vision statements: OUR MISSION

NATIONAL MERIT AND TOP SENIOR SCHOLARS Achieving National Merit recognition is rigorous, competitive and requires a top score on the PSAT during a student’s junior year of high school. Millions of students take the PSAT, but only a few go on to qualify for National Merit standing. In 2018-19, Notre Dame Prep produced three National Merit Commended Scholars: Christopher Giunta, Kylie Salvino and John Tokish. Seniors Sabrina Arevalo, Haley Cabrera and Timothy Ryan were named National Hispanic Scholars. Finishing at the top of the Class of 2019 were two amazing students who excelled in sports, student activities and, of course, academics. Cale Gregory earned the title of salutatorian for his outstanding GPA, placing second in the class of more than 200 students. He is attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he is playing football and studying engineering. The class valedictorian for 2019 was Gabriella Alessio who earned this honor through hard work in the classroom, and earning the top GPA in her graduating class. Gabby, as she is known on campus, served the school in volleyball, track and field, the robotics team, as a school ambassador, House Captain for St. Teresa House and onair anchor for NDP Live! She attends The Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University studying bio-medicine.

A VIBRANT SPIRITUAL LIFE AIDS STUDENTS IN PURSUIT OF HOLINESS Notre Dame Preparatory is a Diocesan Catholic High School, dedicated to the promotion of academic excellence and the pursuit of holiness through the shared values of Reverence, Respect and Responsibility, out of love for Jesus Christ. In September of 2018, we organized an amazing All-School House Retreat. It was the first time we took the entire student body, faculty and staff to downtown Phoenix for Mass at the Basilica and a retreat at the Convention Center. There were many dynamic speakers, question and answer sessions and time spent within the Houses. It was no small feat, but it was very spiritually rewarding. We continued the tradition of holding a school-wide Eucharistic Procession, followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament to give students the opportunity to follow Jesus in the Eucharist and experience the peace of a true encounter with Him. One of the most powerful spiritual opportunities offered at NDP were the retreats. They deepened students’ understanding of our loving God and brought students closer to each other in a bond of trust and faith that will adhere them in friendship for many years. We embrace our Catholic faith and identity and continually encourage each student to become the best version of his/herself so that everyone on our campus will reflect the grace, mercy, love and unity of Jesus Christ. In fact, the theme for the 2019-20 school year is Unity.

SERVING OTHERS, KNOWING GOD Notre Dame Prep has a dynamic and robust Christian Service Learning program designed to foster in our students a heart for helping others. It is a vehicle for students to grow in holiness by knowing, loving and serving God, through helping others.

Students at NDP grasp an understanding of who God is through a number of opportunities. Mass, reconciliation, adoration and retreats, in addition to our Theology courses, are a few examples of the occasions we offer where students can encounter our living and loving God through Jesus Christ. Through Christian outreach, our students gain an understanding of who God is and what He wants for each of us, which is to have a peaceful and meaningful life. We encourage service as a means for discovering that it is through giving that we receive. Our freshmen begin serving through the Freshman Plunge where they spend a day feeding the homeless and marginalized. They do this alongside members of their House, both adults and students.

Many of our students travel abroad to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru and Tanzania to work with orphans, build and paint homes for poor families, plant gardens and play and eat with the people there, always showing kindness and friendship. Month by month and House by House, our students, faculty and staff raise money for various organizations that support the poor, sick, marginalized and people in crisis through our monthly allschool collection drives and $5 Jeans Days. It is through these encounters that we see the largest transformation in the maturity and compassion of our students: the true value of a Catholic college preparatory education.

STUDENT CLUBS Navigating high school is easier when students make friends who share their interests, explore new hobbies and gain leadership skills. Our 40+ student-led clubs offer these benefits and so much more. Technology in clubs is very popular as our E-Sports and Robotics clubs continue to grow in numbers and enthusiasm. Both E-Sports and Robotics are considered a club and a team. Gamers will soon be able to compete at the AIA level through E-Sports, starting in the 2020-21 school year, and our Robotics Club competes in several competitions each year. “I think we are seeing an increased interest in technology-related clubs because of an intentional effort to expose students to STEM classes earlier,” said Deacon Carmene Carbone, moderator of our Robotics Club. “The growth of our club is a direct result of our school’s commitment to technology.” As Catholics, many of our clubs are based in service to others. Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is one of those clubs. NPH members traveled to the Dominican Republic and other Spanishspeaking countries to help the poor in many ways. They planted gardens and played with the children there, sharing God’s love, making lasting memories and building friendships.

During the 2018-19 school year, Veterans Heritage Project interviewed more than 40 former service men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, preserving their stories in the latest volume of Since You Asked a national publication available for purchase through VHP and catalogued in the Library of Congress. Last February the Veterans Heritage Project brought Medal of Honor recipient Sammy Davis to our school. With grace and humility, Davis told his moving story of bravery and honor when he rescued fellow soldiers during a gunfight in Vietnam. “When he spoke, you could hear a pin drop in the gym filled with students, parents and faculty,” said then-club president Sabrina Arevalo. When the speech was over, the crowd erupted into a standing ovation. “It was exciting to share this speaker with all the students so that they can experience that sense of pride and bravery that we in the club experience each time we interview a vet.” NDP offers clubs for board-game enthusiasts, animal lovers and those with a passion for baking, drama, foreign languages or connecting with students from various cultures. “Clubs make our campus more dynamic and fun,” said Brenda Beers, director of student activities. “It’s all about the students. They are the reason each club succeeds.”

NDP PARENTS IN PARTNERSHIP Notre Dame Prep parents are invaluable to the success of our school. Our Mothers’ Guild and Dads’ Club are driving forces for many of the initiatives we, as a school, take on. Both of our parent associations went above and beyond in 2018-19. Dads’ Club, whose pillars include Engagement, Formation and Service, grew significantly last year. They added two new social events to the school calendar: Dads Meat Up BBQ (guys only), and Casino Night, an occasion for the entire community. Both events were successful in bringing people together to have a wonderful time and to build relationships. Dads’ Club participated in a new service event by organizing volunteers for a Special Olympics event on Bemis Field where NDP dads and their teens welcomed more than 50 special athletes and their families for a day of competition and fun. “The Notre Dame Prep community, including the Dads’ Club, were wonderful hosts to our Special Olympics athletes,” said Todd Jones, of North Valley Unified Special Olympics. “I heard from several Special Olympics parents this was the most fun event they have been to.” Dads’ Club was also instrumental in preparing our campus for the annual Open House, staffing volunteers for our New Saints Family Barbecue, selling water at all home football games, organizing Mass Hikes and acting as friendly ambassadors to visiting and new families on campus. Mothers’ Guild continued to live by their motto of “Guiding, Giving and Grace,” and during the 2018-19 school year, they enthusiastically embraced and enhanced the implementation of our House System. 28 SAINTS NATION | 2018-19

ACADEMICS
A Notre Dame education is a springboard to the life-long learning of our students and alumni. We nurture students to transition from self-centered childlike understanding to caring young men and women who find creative methods to solve problems and serve God by helping others, seeking the truth and pursuing excellence. We believe that all of our students are capable of achieving our academic expectations through various learning styles. That is why we offer programs to meet students where they are and accommodate how they learn.

In 2018-19, we launched our ACE (Academic Center of Excellence) to aid all students, from those who learn quickly to those who require a little extra time to master a subject. We made great strides in utilizing our Center for Collaboration and Innovation (CCI) with the creation of our digital video and recording studio. This space was used by our digital photography, digital video and technology courses. NDP Live!, the media club, used the studio to produce many promotional videos for our school and video announcements for those on campus. In this space, our students gain true-life experience in broadcast journalism and live TV. Our STEM and Robotics programs flourished in the fully-functioning CCI as we continue to provide space for our students to innovate, collaborate on ideas and solve problems. Last year we offered new entrepreneur classes that were very successful. Our students competed in the national Seed Spot competition. Two of our teams made it to the top 12. NDP students Christopher Griffin, Chris Bateman, Colton Baldwin and Calvin Bicket won the grand prize for their Social Bud app and website. All four members received $2,500 to continue development of their idea. Social Bud is an app and website designed to help people who suffer from social anxiety. NDP is a proving ground for students to test ideas and hone talents. Students are guided through their high school years by our accomplished and dedicated faculty and counseling staff who provide academic counseling, class scheduling, college and career planning and assistance for students as they integrate socially.

ATHLETICS The 2018-19 school year was full of exciting moments for Saints fans, including our boys’ lacrosse team making history by winning a third straight State Championship and Gatorade announcing Jake Smith as their National Football Player of the Year. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen surprised Smith at a ceremony in our newly renovated weight room, where Smith was surrounded by his family, teammates and coaches. Notre Dame Prep continues to accept the challenge to compete against schools larger in size—but not in heart. For the third straight year, our football team went undefeated in regular season play; our pom and cheer teams competed at Nationals and placed third in most varsity categories. The Saints D1 and D2 hockey teams continue to demonstrate that NDP is a hockey powerhouse, with our teams consistently ranking high in the state. The same is true for both our boys’ and girls’ golf and tennis programs.

Our boys’ wrestling team celebrated as junior Brock Locnikar placed second at the D2 AIA State Tournament in the 195-pound weight class. For the second year in a row, our boys’ baseball team was in the hunt for the state title in another exciting season, making it all the way to the state semifinals. We are proud of our student-athletes who make up 80 percent of the student body. Our community is inspired by those who compete out of love for their sport, whether in front of hundreds of fans or just a few loyal supporters. We celebrate and value all the Saints who represent our school on the field, pitch, court, chess table and Robotics competitions. There is something for everyone at Notre Dame Prep, and we look forward to continue competing at a high level across the board.

In 2018-19, we piloted a guest director program for our drama productions with Terry Temple of Temple Music and Performing Arts. An NDP alumni dad, Temple oversaw a record number of budding actors at auditions. The fall production of Arsenic and Old Lace was double-casted to include as many underclassmen as possible. The spring musical ensemble for Shrek: The Musical garnered several nominations and one award at the National Youth Theater Awards over the summer. Tri-M Musical Honor Society held its third benefit concert, benefiting Rosie’s House, while our dancers performed for patients at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, continuing the NDP tradition of giving back. The Fine Arts Festivals were bedazzled with artwork produced by our outstanding painting, drawing, pottery, 3D and digital photography students: a true testimony of the high-quality instruction they receive. The advanced painting students participated in the Memory Project for a second year, providing portraits to child refugees in Columbia.

IMPROVEMENTS
The generosity of those who contribute to Saints Fund provides us with brilliant opportunities to grow our school. Improving Notre Dame Prep and keeping it a safe place for our students is of utmost importance. Since our school is also a sacred space, we want to make our campus a reflection of God’s blessings. Our successful fundraising efforts last year enabled us to complete and begin many campus initiatives. Tuition revenue is critical in sustaining daily operational support for our school, while fundraising revenue supports facilities, expansion and allows us to take giant steps forward in achieving both immediate and long-term goals.
OUR LADY OF GRACE GARDEN The crown-jewel of our campus improvement last year was the completion of Our Lady of Grace Garden donated by the Class of 2018. It is a peaceful and beautiful place for anyone in our community to go to pray and reflect. The statue was donated by the Scaramella family and is made of Carrara marble imported from Italy. Surrounded by flowering trees, shrubs and a fleur-de-lis rock enclosure, the Our Lady of Grace Garden made a beautiful backdrop for displaying the pottery our students created for the Fine Arts Festival last spring. Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix visited and blessed the garden in a special ceremony on April 30.
NEW BELL AND ALERT SYSTEM This year we replaced our outdated bell system and its 90s-grade speakers for a state-of-the art system complete with synchronized clocks, high-quality sound and the capability to sound an alert with directions in the extremely rare chance of a major emergency.
