Dear Alumnae Sisters,
This is an amazing time of year; pumpkin spice all around, fall activities, warm sweaters, hot chocolate and preparing for our Christmas Season It is a celebratory season of fun and food You could wonder, how do fall, food and Notre Dame connect? To me, it is easy - food feeds the soul and if you are lucky enough to be on campus or around any of our students, you can see that NDB feeds the soul as well. As a mom on the ground at school these days, I have to share that the beginning of the school year has been AMAZING!!! Back to School Night was electric with energy, kindness and a renewal of dedication and devotion to teaching the girls. It was honestly so invigorating and inspiring to hear from the teachers and see the school shine like we know she can!
The incredible women who are featured in this edition of Impact are changemakers by the way of food and nourishment for our soul Whether they are a cookbook author, personal chef, a baker or wine maker, our accomplished alumnae are sharing their success stories
For me, a connection between food and NDB makes perfect sense. As Meredith says, we need to be kindness-givers and changemakers- I truly believe it is who we are.
In Notre Dame,
Mary Kmak '84 (P '24, P '26)
Alumnae Leadership Board President
Dear NDB Alumnae,
As we enter the holiday season and look forward to the delicious foods we will indulge in, we recognize the amazing women of Notre Dame Belmont who have excelled in the food industry From restaurateurs to winery owners to alumnae and woman-owned businesses, we are proud of the alumnae who share their warm recipes and inspire delicious dishes What makes food so special? I believe it is the company that we enjoy it with. Whether I am enjoying a warm cup of hot cocoa while catching up with an NDB sister, sharing a meal with my parents who are now grandparents to my children, or toasting to twelve years of marriage with my husband Cameron, I recognize the special memories that we form around food and the delicious moments that come from enjoying a warm bite together May we all enjoy the company we surround ourselves with this season and this New Year ahead
Cheers, Tigers!

Head of School
From GOLD to platinum
NDB has been named to the 2024 Advanced Placement School Honor Roll which recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access.
The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Platinum, Gold, Bronze and Silver. NDB has been designated as PLATINUM this year, rising from Gold last year. In May of 2024, 209 students took 408 examinations in 21 subject areas. From this total, 70% earned a score of 3 or higher. Go Tigers!
Black Student Union and Student Coalition for Diversity Connect Art, Service and Community
Tigers from the NDB Black Student Union and the Coalition for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging had an inspiring day in San Francisco for Black Art Week in October. The day kicked off with meaningful service at GLIDE Memorial, followed by an enriching visit to the Museum of African Diaspora where students explored powerful exhibits celebrating Black culture and history
“Learning from and serving at GLIDE memorial was a fantastic kick-off to our Black Student Union and The Coalition for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging. It was a perfect example of Hallmark #6: Creating community among those with whom we work and serve,” shared faculty member G Imazumi-Hegarty ‘07.
“At the GLIDE Memorial, my classmates and I helped prepare lunches that are handed out for free to unhoused individuals,” shared student Loki Ignalls ‘26. “This experience really made me feel like I was giving back to the community instead of just talking about doing so. I think that everyone should volunteer at a place similar to GLIDE at least once in their life. It's humbling and it humanizes the people that you usually only hear about through statistics in the news.”
“I learned that helping others is not that hard to do. It is very easy, yet very beneficial. I also learned that I am very good at making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! Additionally, I learned that Aria and I have a lot of things in common and we became friends that day,” shared student Emily James-Johnstone ‘28.
STUDENTS MEET AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR, CHEF,
AND ALUMNA CARA MANGINI ‘97
On Monday, September 10, 2024, students and Staffulty gathered in the Moore Pavilion for a special guest speaker who stopped at NDB along her book tour! NDB welcomed home award-winning author, chef, restaurateur and beloved NDB alumna, Cara Mangini ‘97. Having recently published her second cookbook The Vegetable Eater, Cara discussed her journey to where she is today and how her time at NDB prepared her
“NDB is where it all started,” she shared, “You don’t realize what an impact NDB has until you look back. When I was a student at NDB, I explored my many interests, and the ongoing exploration of each throughout my career ultimately led me to where I am today.”
Cara explained that one of the most important things she developed at NDB was her work ethic and stamina to be a successful entrepreneur, “These skills allow me to do what I do,” explained Cara, “to have developed and to o make
When we asked Cara what it's like to be back at NDB, she shared, “So much has changed, yet so much is the same. That spirit that makes Notre Dame special is still so vibrant and a part of each student.”
Students shared that they learned from the advice she gave. “You should always follow your dreams no matter how big or small they are. A challenge can always be a good thing and will help you achieve your goals,” Kalea Solano ’26 said
“My advice for students is to follow your interests because they will pave the way for you. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the term “passion” and to get caught up in identifying what your passion is. Years ago someone asked me, ‘If you could do anything on your day off, what would it be?’ And the answer was simple and immediate. I love to cook delicious food for the people that I love and enjoy it together. After that, I pursued how to make that a career.”
“I liked how she talked about her journey in the exact timeline…I really liked how she emphasized the fact that she was lost at first on what to do; this made it very relatable to me as a student,” Amu Raju ‘25 said.
ultimate black bean chili and more! With an outpour of love for Cara’s yummy dishes, many of these recipes have now been adopted into NDB’s lunch rotation for students and Staffulty to enjoy regularly.
Following a delicious lunch, Cara did a live signing of her cookbook. In addition, 25 students received a free autographed copy of The Vegetable Eater for being the first to reply to a “word of the week” email from Head of School Mrs Essalat
“Block out the noise and listen to yourself in your gut. Entrepreneurship stems from the confidence that you have within yourself. Every day you have to tell yourself to keep going even when it's really challenging. Follow your interests and have faith that you will end up exactly where you are meant to be.”
After Cara’s talk with the student body and Staffulty, our wonderful Epicurean team prepared lunch crafted straight from Cara’s new book, including her classic lasagna, butternut squash and chard veggie lasagna, kale caesar salad,
Cara’s books The Vegetable Eater and The Vegetable Butcher are available for purchase on Amazon and at a variety of bookstores
We hope that you enjoy her delicious recipes with your friends and families this holiday season.
Happy eating, NDB Community!
NDB’s Beloved Epicurean: Independent Woman
and Minority-Owned
Epicurean provides breakfast, snacks and lunch to students and Staffulty each day. Passionate about healthy, fresh food, the Epicurean Group is an independent woman and minority-owned business, dedicated to environmentally and socially responsible food service management practices
The student lunch program includes a salad bar, deli bar, and daily hot entree options which include a vegetarian option; ingredients are fresh, seasonal, and local “The meals are very nutritious, as well as taste good,” Lauren Zerella ‘25 said. Students enjoy the variety available. “I love that it is something new everyday, and each meal is always so creative. I also appreciate the variety of choices,” shared Virginia Fitzgerald ‘25
Locally sourced is important to the NDB community because it means that the food is local, seasonal and at its peak of freshness Epicurean focuses on sourcing from local growers and artisan partners within a 150 mile radius from NDB. Students appreciate that the food is locally sourced and organic. “This makes sure that students are eating healthy and naturally grown food, as well as supporting local and ethical farmers,” Hollblad-Fadiman ‘26 said
Students weren’t the only ones who benefitted from the locally sourced, healthy food selections Staffulty also appreciate the healthy food options
“Executive Chef Jaime Barillas, General Manager Kimi Green, and the Epicurean staff are doing an excellent job in ensuring that the NDB community enjoys healthy and delicious meals. Their dedication to offering a wide variety of food, from hot dishes to a fresh salad bar, is commendable. The added touch of always serving with a smile makes the experience even more enjoyable for everyone. All meals are included in the students’ tuition, and Staffulty are also provided meals, which adds convenience,” English teacher Mrs. Esthermaria Martin said.

Kimi Green
HEALTHY FOOD
In her third year as General Manager for Epicurean, Kimi Green shares what it means to be a part of Team NDB
“When I come in everyday, I feel the positivity of the Staffulty and the students. There is always a welcoming feeling, and I feel an attitude of gratitude no matter what day or time it is. There is a culture of respect and support towards one another. The NDB community brings out the best in one another,” shared Kimi.
”As a female leader, I support and appreciate NDB’s values and mission. It’s a special feeling being a part of a community that focuses on empowering young women generation after generation. I enjoy seeing and hearing the excitement from students and Staffulty when they pick up their lunch and it’s something they love to eat. It’s a huge compliment to our team when they want a little of everything on the menu, and the plate is too small. I love it when people come back for seconds and when they pass by or stop to tell me how much they loved the lunch. Positive feedback from guests, parents, students and Staffulty during or after events is confirmation that we are doing a good job and helping to create lasting memories with our food,” shared Kimi
Students share how helpful and friendly the staff is with helping them to make selections. “Lots of Epicurean staff help me with food selections. They present ample options for vegans, vegetarians, gluten and dairy free; they are super helpful and always open minded. The staff are so kind and always present us with a smile on their face,” shared Camilla Qaqundah ‘26.
The warm relationship among students, Staffulty and Epicurean Group is obvious as students and Staffulty greet Epicurean staff by name each day Even more evident was when last year, beloved Epicurean team member Francisco endured an accident resulting in months of recovery. During this time, Francisco received an outpouring of letters, posters, flowers, food and gifts from students and Staffulty members to let him know that they were cheering him on back to health Students even organized a fundraiser at Amici’s to support his healing journey The day that Francisco finally returned to campus, there were many happy tears shed and happy hugs of friendship. What a testament to the community that Notre Dame is!
A DELICIOUS PASSION FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Owner of LL’s Kitchen, Lindsey Mifsud 15 is a former NCAA softball player and certified Nutrition Coach, born and raised in the Bay Area Her passion for health and wellness runs deep When she’s not whipping up granola in the kitchen, one can find her in the gym. As a four-year starting softball pitcher at the University of Redlands, Lindsey’s mindset evolved around fitness and nutrition and the importance of play both on the field and in the weight room
“My college softball career paralleled the changes in my relationship with food and further inspired me to help others on that same journey.” She explained that she struggled with her own relationship with food and health-related issues, all while being in the spotlight with pressures to perform at a high level “My life experiences will continue to drive me to help others however I can,” Lindsay said
LL’s Kitchen began as a hobby during the pandemic “This quickly became about so much more than granola; it became a vessel for channeling inner strength, independence and realization of one’s true potential,” Lindsey shared.
Lindsey explains that LL’s Kitchen’s healthy choices should never mean compromising flavor which is why they’ve carefully crafted granola using only the finest, all natural and refined sugar free ingredients Each flavor of granola is perfectly blended with the richness of infused olive oil and just a touch of honey as the only sweetener This unique combination adds a delightful twist to each bite, making their granola a true culinary masterpiece.
Lindsey feels strongly that her NDB education shaped the foundation of who she is as a woman and business owner. “NDB was where I learned how positive self-talk can transform a girl into a woman. My time at Notre Dame gave me the confidence and ability to handle life’s greatest challenges, to not be afraid to ask for help, to persevere through adversity, and most importantly, to be exactly who I am.”
“Women supporting women is so incredibly powerful, and I believe receiving an education in such a positive and encouraging environment is what helped to develop my courage, grit, and determination. Go Tigers!”
Cooking up a Love for Business and Cakes
Kathleen Luzzi ‘74 produces outrageously creative cake designs as well as exquisite and delicious wedding cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Kathy's Creative Kakes also offers basic and advanced decorating classes and workshops at the bakery in San Mateo
“NDB was the beginning of learning for me. I was discovering my own excitement in learning for myself. This changed my perspective on getting an education and ignited a love for learning that I felt very lucky to have entering college. I depended on the basics of critical thinking and discipline that I learned at Notre Dame to support me through the serious challenges that going to UCLA and UC Berkeley brought. In hindsight, I relish the learning that I was able to take with me and see that it has lasted my entire life throughout a few careers.”
Kathleen shared that she celebrated her creative side during Aquacades at NDB, “I was a swimmer all my life and participating every year in Aquacades are some of my best memories. Not only swimming and learning routines, but making costumes and the backdrops let me experience another side to my creativity that I use in my daily work now.”
Being both logical and creative, Kathleen loves to combine both skills in her work, “Being a business owner brings one set of joy and challenges, but making creative cakes allows both sides of my brain to flourish. I think deep down I realized this desire to exercise both sides of me, the logical and the creative, was first acquired during my time at Notre Dame.”
We were so grateful to have Kathy return home to NDB at the Class of 1974 50th Reunion in October Kathy created a deliciously beautiful cake for her class incorporating their class mascot, the Pirates, and even their photos on the cake (pictured above and to the left)“After our NDB Reunion, I feel so fortunate to have been able to share our combined memories and life stories with each other. It truly was a meaningful and wonderful time. I’m so grateful for several lifelong relationships with my classmates. It’s a bond that lasts through the years.”
A Taste for Wine
Andrea Kozlowski Mullineux ‘97 and her husband, Chris, are owners of the Mullineux Winery. In response to the question asking what she does on a daily basis, Andrea explained that as a business owner, winemaker, viticulturalist and mother, her daily routine is a blend of creativity, science and hands-on work Each day begins with getting her teenagers to school followed by a review of the vineyard conditions, depending on the season checking the weather, assessing vineyard health, and planning for upcoming tasks such as winter pruning, springtime canopy management or summer harvesting.
In the winery, she oversees various processes such as fermentation, blending, and barrel aging. Quality control is paramount, so of course, there are frequent tastings to evaluate the wines at different stages and make necessary decisions
“Working closely with my husband in running the business, we discuss strategies for the vineyard, winery and sales to make sure we stay positioned as a top fine wine producer. Each day is a unique challenge that fuels my love for this craft, combining science with artistry in every bottle we produce.“
When asked about how Andrea balances a successful business and family she shared, “Of course family life is very important to me and making sure that it is balanced is not always easy, but it is incredibly rewarding to involve our children as much as possible, and to show them what one can accomplish when starting from scratch when you put your mind to it.”
Andrea and Chris Mullineux
Andrea shared that her Notre Dame education laid the foundation for her life and career. “As a proud graduate of Notre Dame Belmont, I often reflect on how this remarkable school laid the foundation for my career as a top winemaker in a traditionally male-dominated field. My time there was transformative, fostering an independent spirit that has guided me throughout my professional journey”
Andrea’s love for science and creativity grew during her academic career at NDB. “I was fortunate to benefit from an exceptional science program and curriculum that incorporated creativity on all levels This eventually ignited my passion for the world of viticulture and enology, a true combination of science and art”
It was not only academics at NDB that prepared Andrea for her successful career, it was also the life-changing experience of being surrounded by likeminded, supportive women
“Beyond academics, the environment was one of empowerment. I was surrounded by strong female role models who demonstrated that women can thrive in any field. Their encouragement inspired me to believe in my own potential and to pursue my dreams, and that we have the tools and support to break barriers and redefine expectations. We were encouraged to embrace our passion, challenge ourselves and know that we can make a significant impact in whatever path we choose.”
Andrea’s NDB graduation quote was, “You can be as safe as a bird in a cage, but the bird in the tree is the one that’s singing” Andrea shared that she chose this quote because “NDB was a beautiful beginning to believing in myself and eventually becoming a role model to the next generation of young women.”
Andrea pays great respect for those who came before her She shared, “I have deep appreciation for those who paved the way before me. The trailblazers in the wine industry – particularly women who broke barriers – serve as powerful reminders of what’s possible.
“At the core of my inspiration is authenticity. Being true to myself and my values is essential in both my personal and professional life.”

Feeding Students for Life
On October 30 NDB held its annual NDB Scholarship Benefit, raising money for tuition assistance. Honoree Dianne Sullivan Morton ‘83, owner and photographer of Dianne Morton Photography, shared how NDB feeds students the elements of true leadership - graduates who are fit for an ever-evolving future, tapping into their intelligence and empathy to meet the moment and rise to any occasion
"The most important benefit of an all-girls education is a growing sense of confidence. By the time I graduated NDB, I was ready to take on the world," shared Dianne.
As attendees walked into the event at NDB, they walked through an art show of beautiful pieces created by Dianne The audience was thrilled to learn that Dianne’s passion for art was cultivated at NDB, where she indulged in her love of photography, learning to shoot images and develop film in the school’s darkroom.
As the evening progressed, a rich discussion about the importance of tuition assistance prevailed Many deserving students who are in the process of applying to be a part of NDB’s Class of 2029 have their heart set on joining our community, but do not know if they will have the opportunity to attend NDB due to financial constraints
Over the course of the evening, the NDB Community was “introduced” to prospective students from the Class of 2029 including an eighth grader named Alle:
"My favorite subject in school is Art class because I can express myself in different ways. Also, since I have a creative mind, and I like to show my ideas to people and share my feelings with them. I also have begun to love math. This last year my teacher has named me the 'Math Star'! What I would like to do in High School is dance. Dancing is a way where I can be myself and be happy. I am lucky to have a loving family and I am grateful for them and my teachers. I absolutely LOVED Notre Dame when I went to the Open House! (Can you tell I am smiling right now?)” - Alle, eighth grader
With over 250 families having attended Open House on Sunday, October 20, the Class of 2029 has begun their journey at NDB and we can't imagine turning away any deserving student from an NDB education There is still time to fund the future for the Class of 2029! No amount is too big or too small It takes a village to educate the leaders of tomorrow! Please scan the QR code or visit ndhsb.org/support/fund-a-future.

Support the Lasting Legacy Capital Campaign
Juliane Lavezzo Sullivan ‘69 and Bob Sullivan believe the high school years are the most important window in a young person’s development, ultimately setting one up for success in college and beyond. It was at Notre Dame Belmont (NDB) that Juliane ‘69 and her daughters, Rebecca ‘04 and Andrea ‘10, thrived in the school’s supportive, faith-based environment that empowers young women to take safe risks and discover their passions.
“THE SINGLEGENDER, SMALL ENVIRONMENT OF NDB EMPOWERS YOU TO FIND YOURSELF AND WHO YOU ARE, SO THAT YOU MAY GO OUT INTO THE WORLD AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.”
“Single-gender education was the best thing for myself and my girls,” Juliane shared. “Having more introverted personalities, the environment at NDB empowered us to find our niches and thrive. Both of my daughters excelled in college and have Masters’ degrees — one is a kindergarten teacher and one works with autistic children. The single-gender, small environment of NDB empowers you to find yourself and who you are, so that you may go out into the world and make a positive difference.”
Bob and Juliane look back on the financial struggle they faced putting two daughters and one son through private, Catholic high schools. Having made the necessary sacrifices to afford their education, they dreamed of one day being able to help others do the same. It is with a deep sense of gratitude that they decided the need is great and the time is now
"We have been incredibly blessed and now are able to step up to pay it forward. We support the Lasting Legacy Capital Campaign because we believe in the mission of NDB education. We invite others to join the story and the mission to support NDB to ensure its 100+ year legacy will live on. Schools don’t survive on their own — we all have to join in the heavy lifting to ensure NDB’s future. We are proud and grateful to pay it forward, and hope our mission of gratitude will inspire others to do the same,” shared Bob and Juliane.
