Nathan Smith Sawyer, ND, grew up near Minot, North Dakota, where farming helped shape his understanding of responsibility, patience, and steady work. His family’s agricultural background extends more than five generations, giving him early exposure to grain production, cattle operations, and land management. Through those experiences, he learned the importance of trust, planning, and strong relationships with landowners, farmers, and community members. These values later guided his work in agriculture, business growth, and land-related opportunities. Nate Smith earned a degree in Agricultural Economics and began building practical business experience at a young age. While still in high school, he imported trucks from Canada for resale, and by age twenty, he was selling refurbished trucks regularly. He also gained experience in gravel hauling, farm equipment resale, and residential property purchases. In 1999, he took leadership of the family farming operation, which grew from about 460 leased acres to more than 30,000 acres, along with cattle and feed operations. Realtor Nathan Smith Sawyer, ND, later expanded into real estate development after recognizing housing needs tied to regional economic changes around 2011. His work included residential projects with townhomes, duplexes, and housing for growing communities, including projects serving seasonal agricultural workers. In 2024, he became a managing partner at a real estate development company, focusing on land evaluation, financial review, and long-term planning. He also remains involved in community service, agricultural advocacy, and youth and winter sports organizations.
