Economic blockade enters sixth day; mini-truck torched
Police preventing women protestors from entering CM’s bungalow on Wednesday Correspondent IMPHAL, JUN 15: Miscreants torched an empty mini-truck on NH-37 in Manipur’s Tamenglong district in the early hours even as the 10-day-long economic blockade call given jointly by Joint Action Committee Against Anti-Tribal Bills (JAC) Churachandpur and Outer Manipur Tribal Forum (OMTF) entered sixth day on Wednesday.
According to the report, a group of five miscreants set fire on the mini-truck bearing registration No MN05C-2228 at a place near Namdoujang village, 5 km off Noney police station in Tamenglong districtof Wednesday. The truck was proceeding from Imphal to Jiribam at the time of the incident. The miscreants left the scene immediately after the incident. The owner of the vehicle, Wahengbam Nganthoiba

On the other hand, Manipur has faced an acute shortage of essential commodities, including fuel due to the economic blockade as all vehicular traffic were off the road since June 10 midnight. Hundreds of goodladen trucks were stranded at Mao gate along the ImphalDimapur section of NH-2 and Imphal-Jiribam section of
NH-37. In Mao Gate alone, more than 55 truckes were stranded, police sources here informed. More than 100 trucks, including oil tankers have moved towards Imphal with full security cover of the police and the security forces. CRPF personnel being assisted by state force are escorted the vehicles which are expected to arrive at Imphal on Wednesday night. JAC in association with newly formed OMTF imposed the 10-day economic blockade on the national highways in Manipur as part of its ongoing campaign against the three ILP bills passed by the Manipur Assembly last year. Meanwhile, a meeting convened by JAC on Tuesday has decided to depute a delegation comprising members of families of nine people who died in the violent uprising in Churachandpur district against the three bills. The mor tal remains of the nine deceased were still lying unclaimed at Churachandpur district hospital. The meeting deliberated on the possibility of sending a delegation comprising one each of members of deceased families, tribal chiefs, leaders of tribe councils and JAC members to Delhi and seeks justice for the nine “martyrs”, , a statement of the JAC said. They will demonstrate the “genuine sorrow and struggle of tribal people of Manipur on the 300th day of the Manipur tribal movement,” it added.
Yoga should not be imposed on anybody: Mizo Governor
Nirbhay Sharma AIZAWL, JUN 15 (PTI): M i z o r a m G ove r n o r L t General Nirbhay Sharma Wednesday suggested that the the controversy over Yoga should be sorted out through dialogue and said no one should be compelled to practice Yoga, it should be done voluntarily. “I have practised Yoga for over four decades which, I found was extremely good for health, but it did nothing to re-enforce my religious belief,” Sharma said, adding that practising yoga does not mean conversion to Hinduism. “ P r a c t i c e o f Yo g a should not be imposed on anybody and any one who wants to practice Yoga should do it voluntarily,” the Governor said. This was announced by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday while paying tributes to the martyr. Sonowal also said that the government would repair the road that leads to the house at Balijan near Sarupathar in Assam’s Golaghat district. “Swahid Kushal Konwar, who wholeheartedly dedicated himself in the country’s freedom struggle and sacrificed his life, needs highest degree of obeisance from everybody,” Sonowal said while speaking on Konwar’s death anniversary at Nehru Park here. Kushal Konwar inspired us to value honesty, morality and humanity and he exemplified his love for the nation through his valour and sacrifice,” Sonowal said. Lalramliana Pachuau, Senior Executive Secretary of the Presbyterian Church’s Mizoram Synod and one of the leaders of the MKHC, said the Yoga issue was raised during a meeting of the MKHC at the Synod office on June 2. Pachuau said the churches did not have any objection to the government propagating Yoga at the official level as the government is a secular institution. He, however, said, the churches regarded Yoga as something that can dilute the doctrine of Christianity and asked all the constituent churches of the MKHC to issue messages cautioning their members. The MKHC looked upon Yoga as against the teachings and beliefs of Christianity, he added. The meeting of the MKHC decided that Yoga is based on Hindu philosophy and cannot be accepted as something that can be blended with Christianity. “Yoga exercise may be able to heal some illness, but Christians cannot use it to replace the eternal healing of Christ,” the meeting said, adding that Yoga might be used to assimilate or convert Christians.
BJP to boycott IMC mayor election Correspondent IMPHAL, Jun 15: BJP councillors of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) have decided to boycott the election to the post of mayor slated for Thursday. BJP councillors alleged that the entire process of election to mayor was faulty. They will also stay away from attending a meeting of the councillors to be held at the court room of Imphal West DC office at Lamphel. The BJP councillors decided to boycott the election after the returning officer of the election failed to entertain a plea from the councillors regarding the venue of the election to mayor. Meanwhile, apart from a Congress councillor, nobody has filed nomination for the post. Congress councillor Soram Sunil, who was elected as leader of the party on Tuesday filed his paper on Wednesday. It is believed that Sunil is likely to be declared elected uncontested. The last hour of filing nomination was at 2 p.m.

YMA day observed across Mizoram
AIZAWL, JUN 15 (PTI): Young Mizo Association (YMA) day was obser ved across Mizoram and other places outside the state today with the state government declaring the day as a public holiday. YMA members were engaged in cleaning their respective villages and localities since morning while in some villages the day was observed by planting trees by YMA members. Many YMA branches donated blood in the hospitals to mark the day while some branches donated food and money to Hospitals, orphanage and addiction centres. YMA was formed on this day in 1935 by the then Welsh missionaries and Mizo leaders for organising the Mizo youths to undertake good social works and became the largest and most prominent society-based organisation of the Mizos. “Ever year when Brahmaputra changes course the BSF posts get hit and some get demolished. Many have to be abandoned. Sluice gates can provide a solution to this challenge,” they said. It is also proposed, the blueprint said, to deploy static aerial platforms like aerostats that can be loaded with intelligent high-resolution cameras to ‘watch over’ the border area. “A smart operational command and control room will be created that will have all the machine and human surveillance feeds coming to it. The control room will be
connected with optic fibre so that it can collect data from the ground and relay it upto Guwahati and further to the BSF headquarters in Delhi,” they said. BSF Director General K K Sharma and Additional DG A P Maheshwari had recently travelled to the affected areas in Assam and also briefed newly appointed Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal about the survey and analysis they conducted in the IB areas. Officials said the force is also looking at placing ‘unattended ground sensors’ in forward areas of the IB so that any movement can be picked up in the dense forest areas.

ACB instructed to investigate fraud in subsidy disbursement
AIZAWL, JUN 15 (PTI): Mizoram chief secretary and chief vigilance officer Lalmalsawma instructed state Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate the alleged fraud in the disbursement of subsidies to the Mizo Carbon Products, a firm which claimed to have processed charcoal at its unit in the Industrial Growth Centre near Aizawl. Lalmalsawma issued the instruction last evening following the decision to order the ACB probe by the meeting of the Council of Ministers on Monday, official sources said. The State Level Committee had recommended payment of Rs 2.47 crore as Central Transport Subsidy (CTS) and another Rs 93. 90 as Central Capital Investment Subsidy (CCIS) for the Mizo Carbon Products, owned by Ravi Gulgulia, central Committee of the Young Mizo Association (CYMA) leaders said. The State Level Committee again recommended payment of Rs 10.34 lakh CTS to the firm on May 27, the YMA leaders added. The YMA leaders alleged that the industry from where the firm claimed to have processed coal imported from Meghalaya has been found to be incapable of making such production and had earlier demanded an inquiry by the state government.
