Serena to play Kerber in final Sania-Martina crash out

Serena Willaims and Angelique Kerber celebrate after winning their respective matches.

London, Jul 7 (Agencies): Holder Serena Williams will play Angelique Kerber in the women’s singles final at Wimbledon on Saturday. Six-time champion Serena, 34, thrashed Russia’s Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-0 in 48 minutes to reach her ninth final. Fourth-seeded German Kerber, 28, prevented a fifth all-Williams final by beating Serena’s older sister Venus, who was badly out of sorts, 6-4 6-4. In January, the left-handed Kerber beat Serena in the Australian Open final for her first Grand Slam title. Serena, who is bidding to match Steffi Graf ’s open era record of 22 Grand Slam singles title, simply had too much firepower for her unseeded

opponent. Vesnina, a twotime Grand Slam champion in doubles, looked overawed from the outset, losing the first four games. The world number 50, playing in her first Grand Slam singles semi-final, rallied but still lost the first set in 28 minutes. Things got even worse for Vesnina in the second set, the 29-year-old simply unable to deal with the Serena serve, which yielded only three points in the match. Venus, who last won the title in 2008, was appearing in her first Grand Slam semifinal since the 2010 US Open and was the oldest major semifinalist since Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 1994. Five-time champion Venus fell out of the world’s top 100 in 2011 after being

Kerala Blasters sign Haokip for ISL 3

Thongkhosiem Haokip

New Delhi, Jul 7 (IANS): Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Kerala Blasters FC announced on Thursday the signing of striker Thongkhosiem Haokip, popularly known as Semboi, for the upcoming third edition of the tournament. The talented 22-year-old striker, who had a fabulous run last season scoring four goals in six appearances for FC Goa, will now don the yellow jersey of Kerala Blasters. Haokip started his career with the Pune FC youth academy where he became the first academy player to net a hat-trick while representing the club in the U-20 I-League. His ability to score hat-tricks can be seen from his performance in the 2014-15 season of the I-League where he scored three

times within 15 minutes against Shillong Lajong. He had finished that season as the highest Indian scorer with seven goals in 18 matches. He scored another hat-trick in the last ISL season, becoming the first Indian player to score a hat-trick both in the ISL and the I-League. “I am excited to be part of Kerala Blasters and hope to justify the faith put in me by the coach and the management. I am looking forward to meet and train with my new team-mates and coach Steve Coppell,” Haokip said in a release. “We welcome the young ever smiling Haokip into the Kerala Blasters family. We were impressed with his performances last season for FC Goa and hope he continues his form into this year.

diagnosed with the immune system disorder Sjogren’s syndrome. And the eighth seed looked fatigued throughout, dropping her serve four times in the first set and also in the first game of the second. Kerber continued to take advantage of Venus’ misfiring forehand, wrapping things up in one hour and 12 minutes to reach her first Wimbledon final. “We’ve had tough matches before and I knew she could bring it to me on this surface,” said Serena, who led Vesnina 4-0 in head-to-heads before Thursday. “It’s never easy out there, every point you have to fight for. I can’t believe I’m in the final this year. I’m 0-2 this year [Serena lost the Australian and French Open finals] so I’m determined to win one.”

SL demand compensation from WADA Colombo, Jul 7 (Agencies): Sri Lanka’s cricket board will seek compensation from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) over the wrongful suspension of wicketkeeper Kusal Perera. Perera was suspended during Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand last December after WADA said he had tested positive for a banned substance - a finding the laboratory later revised. The International Cricket Council lifted the ban on Perera in May after Sri Lanka intervened to prove the tests were wrong, but the country’s cricket board said it spent £77,000 on legal and technical costs in defending Perera. “The ICC and Sri Lanka Cricket are together in this right now to claim money from WADA,” said Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala. He did not say how much compensation the board would claim, but he said it would be an amount “never ever granted to anyone in the history of world cricket”. In May, Perera said he had suffered “tremendous mental stress” after the positive result but insisted he always knew he would be eventually cleared. As a result of the suspension, Perera was ruled out of Sri Lanka’s World Twenty20 title defence earlier this year.

India’s tennis star Sania Mirza and her women’s doubles partner Switzerland’s Martina Hingis suffered a shock defeat in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon tennis tournament here on Thursday. The top seeded IndoSwiss pair was knocked out by fifth seeds Hungary’s Timea Babos and Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 2-6, 4-6 in just 68 minutes. The Hungarian-Kazakhstani pair got off to a positive start, winning 13 of the 17 first serve points and winning two out of two break points to put the top seeds on the back foot. Also, two doubles faults served by the Indo-Swiss pair in the opening set proved costly as the duo went down 2-6 to hand Timea-Yaroslava the advantage right at the start. In the second set, SaniaMartina began the game well and aggressively. But powerful backhand and collective play by the fifth seeds saw them gather another 13 vital first serve points out of 27. The second set was going in a see-saw manner but once Timea-Yaroslava won two break points there was no way back for the Indo-Swiss pair. Despite breaking their opponents once in the set, Sania-Martina failed to hold on eventually missing a cut to yet another semi-finals as they lost the second set 4-6 to go crashing out of the tournament.

No Zika risk during Olympics, insists Temer Brasilia, Jul 7 (IANS): Brazil’s interim President Michel Temer has said that there is no risk of contracting the Zika virus during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. “We can guarantee, as has the World Health Organization (WHO), that there is almost no risk of cases of the Zika virus occurring during the Games,” he said in a statement on Wednesday. Temer explained that the winter in the Southern Hemisphere saw very low spread of diseases carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and that cases of Zika had plummeted in recent weeks in Rio de Janeiro and across Brazil. “I remember that during the 2014 World Cup, when 1.4 million foreign tourists visited Brazil, a much awaited epidemic never happened. We will have a favourable environment for tourists during the Games,” said Temer. According to the interim president, Brazil stands ready to welcome all visitors “with open arms”. However, a number of international athletes, including top golfers such as Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Vijay Singh and NBA superstar Steph Curry, have pulled out due to Zika fears. In June, the WHO said that there was no need to cancel or postpone the Games, since the propagation of Zika is unlikely to be affected by the sports event.

11 Murray etching his name among grasscourt greats LONDON, Jul 7 (Agencies): Slowly but surely Andy Murray is scratching his name alongside the all-time grasscourt greats on Wimbledon’s hallowed lawns. The Scot , who emulated Fred Perry by ending Britain’s 77-year wait for a Wimbledon men’s champion in 2013, a year after winning Olympic gold on Centre Court, notched a 51st Wimbledon match victory by fighting off gallant Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in dramatic fashion on Wednesday. It moved him equal seventh on the all-time list of men’s singles matches won here, alongside five-times champion Bjorn Borg, and put him into a seventh semi-final at the All England Club, level with his coach Ivan Lendl and world number one Novak Djokovic. “That’s really nice,” he said when told he had matched Borg’s tally of victories. “He’s one of the best players that’s ever played. I must be doing something right to have equalled his wins,” a modest Murray told reporters, after surviving a Tsonga fightback to triumph 7-6(10) 6-1 3-6 4-6 6-1. “He also won the tournament a lot more than me. Still have a long way to go to catch up. Hopefully I can win a couple more between now and the end of the tournament,” he added. The Scot’s quarterfinal against Tsonga was his ninth in a row at Wimbledon -- matching the run of American Pete Sampras. By winning Wednesday’s match he became only the second active player to

at a press conference here on Wednesday. The plan involves security provided by 41,000 soldiers during the event, 21,000 of them here and the rest in the other five cities where the football matches will be held. At the request of the regional government of Rio, 3,000 more soldiers have been added to the initial figure of

Messi to appeal 21-month prison term

Madrid, Jul 7 (IANS): Lawyers representing FC Barcelona’s Argentine football star Lionel Messi and his father Jorge will appeal against the 21month jail sentences (consisting of three seven month terms) handed to the pair for tax fraud by a court here. Lionel was also sentenced to pay a fine of 2.1 million euros (around $2.4 million) while his father was fined 1.6 million euros for using companies outside of Spain to avoid paying 4.16 million euros earned from the players image rights between 2007-2009. The footballer had alleged in his defence that his father managed his financial affairs and that he had merely signed the papers. This argument had originally been accepted by the Spanish Treasury, but the State

Prosecutor had insisted on the player’s guilt. Neither of the Messis is likely to serve actual time in prison for the offence, but in a statement, their lawyers insisted that although the sentence of seven months for each year’s supposed tax avoidance was “symbolic”, it was “not correct”. “The most recent laws from the supreme court on the matter that concerns us would seem to prove the argument of the defence,” Messi’s lawyers Enrique Bacigalupo and Javier Sanchez-Vera explained in a communique. FC Barcelona have expressed their support to their star player, publishing a message on the official club website saying Leo has “no kind of penal responsibility in relation with the events of this procedure”.

reach a century of grasscourt victories -- only seven-times Wimbledon champion Roger Federer (151) has more. Friday will see the British player contest a 20th grand slam semi-final -- one more than Stefan Edberg and John McEnroe -- when he faces Czech 10th seed Tomas Berdych. Still only 29, and apparently at the peak of his powers, the statistical milestones could come thick and fast for Murray. But he will savour those after he has hung up his rackets. Now all he is concerned

about is lifting the Challenge Trophy again on Sunday. The way he dug deep to subdue Tsonga’s onslaught spoke volumes for Murray’s refusal to buckle in the face of adversity -- a characteristic that shows up in a formidable 23-7 record in matches that have gone the five-set distance. He has now won the last six. After winning his first four matches at a canter, Murray said the fight against Tsonga had left him battle-hardened for Berdych and possibly a repeat of his 2012 final against Federer.

Cristiano Ronaldo now Tevez ‘wanted £250k a week’ to return to West Ham sets sights on Euro final

Lyon, Jul 7 (IANS): Having taken Portugal into the final of the Euro 2016 football tournament with an excellent second-half performance against Wales, star forward Cristiano Ronaldo is determined to win this year’s title, finally avenging the loss in the 2004 edition final. Sunday night’s final at the Stade de France in Paris will be the second for Portugal at the European Championships since their loss to Greece in the 2004 edition. When reminded about that heartbreaking 0-1 loss to the disciplined, defensive Greek outfit in front of his home crowd at Lisbon, Ronaldo asserted that the Portugal players are determined not to let go of the opportunity to become champions of Europe this time round. “This is different. I was 18, that was my first final. My debut. Now 12 years have gone by and now we are going to play another final. I am very proud of that. I have always dreamed of winning for Portugal, I hope it is our turn now,” the 31-year-old said. “I am very confident and I believe that all these boys deserve it. I deserve it, Portugal deserves it, the fans deserve it -- every single Portuguese person deserves it. They’ve been amazing supporters,” he added. “We’ve yet to win anything but it’s the final.

I don’t think many people thought that Portugal would make it to the final, but we are there. That fills me with pride, I am very happy. Now we have to get ready for Sunday and we want to make this dream true.” Ronaldo also congratulated fellow Real Madrid star Gareth Bale for spearheading Wales’ dream run in the tournament. The ongoing European Championships witnessed the first appearance at a major tournament for Wales since the 1958 World Cup where they lost 0-1 to eventual winners Brazil in the quarter-finals. At the end of Wednesday’s c la sh a t the Pa rc Olympique Lyonnais Stadium here, Ronaldo and Bale embraced and exchanged words before leaving the pitch with the former appearing to console his Real Madrid teammate. “I congratulated them on their run. They had an amazing run. They were the shining star here, the revelation team,” Ronaldo told the media later. “I wished them good luck and as for the rest I would rather not say.” The semi-final win over Wales is also special for Ronaldo as he took his total tally in the European Championships to nine goals over four editions, thus equalling the alltime record of France legend Michel Platini.

Carlos Tevez London, Jul 7 (Agencies): West Ham have turned down the chance to re-sign Carlos Tevez - because the Argentine striker wants £250,000 a week. Chairman David Sullivan confirmed the Hammers had offered Tevez, currently with Boca Juniors, a contract on £150,000 a week, which would have made him the highest-paid player in the club’s history. But the 32-year-old demanded much more, to the disappointment of Sullivan, although he remains confident a deal can be done. “We tried to get Tevez but he wanted £250,000 a week. In his last year at Juventus, he was great. But 250

Intruding aircraft to be shot down during Olympics Rio de Janeiro, Jul 7 (IANS): Brazil’s government has warned that it will shoot down any unidentified aircraft that violates the protected airspace around facilities of the Olympics Games here in August. “We are not playing,” said Defence Minister Raul Jungmann while introducing the Olympics Games security plan

grand a week?” Sullivan told the Daily Mirror. “He’ll probably stay where he is now, but he doesn’t pay a lot of tax down there.” Tevez is a huge favourite among the Hammers supporters after scoring seven goals in the final 10 games of the 200607 season to keep the club in the Premier League. The player has always spoken of his fondness for the east London club but Sullivan is doubtful about the seriousness of such claims. “All this business ‘I love West Ham.’ Well, it’s ‘I love West Ham if they give me 250 grand a week.’ So how much love is that for West Ham?” Sullivan added. “I actually offered him

150 grand a week to come back, plus bonuses. “I thought that was an incredible offer for someone who loves West Ham. It wasn’t a publicity stunt, I saw him being our No.1 striker. I was hoping he would reproduce what he did at Juventus a year ago. He was a fantastic player. But where do you draw the line with what you are prepared to pay?” The Hammers, meanwhile, have agreed a deal to sign Turkey international winger Gokhan Tore from Besiktas. Tore, who made 82 appearances and scored 12 goals for Besiktas, has joined on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal.
