Dear Middle Tennessee Scouters and Investors, The commitment from the Middle Tennessee Council volunteers during these challenging times has been incredible. The volunteers mentoring the Scouts have found new ways to deliver the Scouting program and overcome obstacles that have held many organizations back. Badges, Scouting ranks, Eagle projects, campouts and unit meetings are happening every day throughout our 37 counties. We are very proud of and grateful to everyone for continuing the mission of Scouting in Middle Tennessee. We celebrated the Middle Tennessee Council’s first Class of female Eagle Scouts at the Grand Ole Opry House on February 1. All 21 young ladies who earned their Eagle joined this virtual celebration. Iconic Grand Ole Opry Host Bill Cody served as the Master of Ceremonies. In addition to the 21 young women who earned the Eagle Award, 251 young men earned their Eagle Scout Rank in 2020. The positive impact of their Eagle projects has and will make a positive impact on their communities for many generations to come. Even more importantly, the leadership and character that all Scouts learn on their journey will benefit our nation, states, communities, families, companies and religious institutions in a very powerful way. The Middle Tennessee Council is strong because of our leaders, donors, chartered partners, and staff. We will continue to be diligent in ensuring the Middle Tennessee Council is a key part of the fabric that makes Middle Tennessee and Ft. Campbell, KY a great place to live. Yours in Scouting,

Congratulations to Ian Romaine for being selected to receive the Silver Antelope Award for 2021, the highest recognition that the Southern Region can bestow upon a volunteer leader. Ian has been in Scouting for over 30 years as a youth and adult volunteer. He has earned several awards and honors including his Eagle Scout rank, Vigil Honor, the District Award of Merit, and Silver Beaver just to name a few. Ian has served in many key roles including, Crew Advisor, OA Lodge Advisor, Wood Badge Course Director, Area VP of Program, and 2019 World Jamboree Staff. Created in 1942, the Silver Antelope Award is awarded to those persons who give extraordinary leadership in distinguished service to youth. This award recognizes registered Scouters for their noteworthy service of exceptional character provided within the region’s territory. Please join us in congratulating Ian Romaine for this prestigious honor.
Winter Camp this year was a little different. We held another Merit Badge Days #3 for our winter camp program led by the Order of the Arrow Wa-Ha-Nasa Lodge. The OA did a phenomenal job over seeing this program for our youth, and thanks to all that helped in making this a safe and successful event. The lead chairman Dalton Phillips had a huge undertaking with thinking outside the box and recruiting a staff of 70 OA members to help put this event on. Winter Camp Merit Badge Days #3 had a lot to offer: 12 merit badges to earn, Rank advancements and 3 new treks that allowed youth to have fun. The treks consisted of the High Adventure Trek, (shotgun shooting, Rifle, Archery, Cowboy Action, Climbing ) STEM Trek, (Robotics, Programming, Chemistry, Space Exploration, Electronics) and the Mountaineer Trek (Tomahawk/ Sling shot, Pioneering, Backpacking, Map and Compass, and Fishing). For this event we had 327 youth attend.
WOW! What a day of fun as 128 Webelo Scouts and families came out to Boxwell Reservation to play on the Fort, Castle and Pirate ships. Webelo Scouts got to earn three rank advancements as they chose from many adventures such as, Build It, Adventures in Science, Building a Better World, Outdoor Adventures, Earth Rocks, First responder and more. Webelos also got to earn their Shooting sports pins for BB, Archery and Sling Shot, field games. Hot chocolate, food, and a big Campfire also made the event fun. We want to thank the Cubworld Staff and Candance Boyce on leading the team of 25 staff members that conducted a wonderful event. We look forward to seeing everyone at Summer Camp 2021 and Webelos Winter Weekend in 2022 when we have a Webelos “Wreck it” Weekend.

Monday February 1, 2021 was a special day in Middle Tennessee Council history. Twentyone Middle Tennessee Scouts were the first females in the Council to achieve the Eagle Scout rank. They were recognized in a virtual ceremony at the Grand Ole Opry House. The positive story was aired on every Nashville TV station. We want to thank Andrew Oppmann from Middle Tennessee State University for coming up with the idea to have this ceremony at the Grand Ole Opry House and putting the resources together to make it a reality. Middle Tennessee State University has been a fantastic partner of the MTC. We also want to thank Deputy Scout Executive, Vance Lackey; Council President, Dr. John Bright Cage; Executive Committee member, Sharon Gentry and Executive Board member and iconic Grand Ole Opry Host Bill Cody for taking key roles in the ceremony. We also want to thank the great team at the Grand Ole Opry for their behind the scenes work. We especially want to thank all the volunteer leaders who helped these young ladies achieve their goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. We have two Executive Board members who serve as Scoutmasters for all girl troops. They are Justin Crosslin and Armando Garza. Our Council continues to lead the way nationally. As of Monday February 1, 2021 the MTC had the third most female Eagle Scouts of all 253 Scout Councils in the nation. When all the Eagle applications are in, we might be the number one Council in the nation.
On March 1, 2020 the Middle Tennessee Council turned 100 years old. To help celebrate this milestone throughout the year, the Middle Tennessee Council formed a 100th Anniversary committee and they developed many activities and events. Like most things during the pandemic, the best laid plans changed more than any of us could have imagined. We are committed to celebrate all the Council has done over its 100 years of existence, so we have reactivated and shifted the 100th Anniversary programs and events to restart in 2021. As we look ahead, we continue to plan to hold these special activities events for this milestone. Please join us by participating in these upcoming events. April 10 - 11, 2021 Boxwell Reservation The MTC will host Merit Badge Days to celebrate the 100th Anniversary. The focus of these Merit Badges are based on the least earned badges throughout the country. During the day, each Scout will be given instruction on a particular merit badge based on the time frame and the requirements of the badge the Scout will complete most, if not all, of the merit badge during the class. The instructor will send home information on what was completed with the Scout to give to their troop’s leadership. Lunch will be provided for each Scout. Social distancing requirements will be followed while at camp, including wearing a mask and staying in an assigned area. April 30 - May 2, 2021 Boxwell Reservation The MTC will host a Spring Camporees to celebrate the 100th Anniversary. The Camporee will have a 100th Anniversary memorabilia display, and Scouts and Scouters will have the opportunity to use a branding iron and silkscreen on T-shirts. The 100th Anniversary Jamboree is scheduled for September 24-26, 2021 and will be held at Boxwell Scout Reservation. There will be plenty of activities for all ages, along with an array of static displays from the military, community groups and others. One feature you will not want to miss will be the Museum which will celebrate Middle Tennessee Scouting through the years. This walk-through time will have patches new and old, videos from other camporees, as well and literature/memorabilia. Have you ever been to a Trade-o-ree or know what it is? Many people trade patches and memorabilia, we are asking all individuals to attend the Jamboree and trade with you and others from across our Council. We will hold an Arena Show for the Cub Scouts and another Arena Show for older Scouts. Yes, there will be food vendors with different foods, soft drinks and ICEEs. Mark your calendars to attend and join in the Celebration of 100 years of camping in the Middle Tennessee Council. This is just one of many ways the Scouts can show their patriotism and citizenship for our Country’s Veterans. This tradition was started more than 35 years ago and continues to grow. This year’s ceremonies will be held on May 29th. We ask all Scouters to plan to participate by helping our communities remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The Centennial Award is a way to get involved in the 100th Anniversary Celebration and to keep a Scout or Volunteer active during this time of distancing. It is fun and easy to participate in the Centennial Award. Complete one or more of the following activities: • 100 Hours of Service (for community, church or Scout projects) • 100 Miles Hiking and/or Canoeing (can be different events) • 100 Commissioner Contacts (verified in Commissioner Tools) • 100 Hours Training Completed (as a participant/trainer – includes Woodbadge, NYLT, etc.) • 100 Days of Fitness (at least 30 minutes per day – does not have to be consecutive) • 100 Good Turns (items collected for Food Drive or Hours of Service.) Each person is responsible for keeping lists/records and documenting completion. We ask for all to be completed by May 1, 2021. This is a change due to meetings and activities being cancelled or postponed. Documentation is reviewed and approved by unit leader, unit committee chair, training course director, district training chair, district commissioner or council commissioner. The Middle Tennessee Council will release a 100th Anniversary Coffee Table Book at the end of 2021, following a yearlong celebration of its first 100 years of Scouting in Middle Tennessee. With a hardbound cover and 200 glossy pages of pictures and facts, the Coffee Table Book will be a collector’s item for those who have Scouting memories in Middle Tennessee for generations to come. This historical archive will retail at approximately $50 and will be available for a limited time by pre-order only. Units are encouraged to set aside time to focus on each point of the Scout Law. This can be done in the Dens, Packs, Patrols, Troops, Crews, or Ships. Each Scout can decide how they will accomplish each point, and the unit will recognize them with the patch of the point they complete. This can be completed in any order; we just want every Scout to earn all 12 points of the Scout Law Patch Set. Scouts can complete specific requirements for each patch anytime between now and July 2021 and earn all 12! This program is determined by the leadership in the unit and the Scout with their family. Capital Campaign Update As of February 24, 2021, the Campaign for Boxwell Reservation has secured $6,474,496 in pledges with 72% of that total already received. That is fantastic and has made it possible for construction to begin on several new projects. The 3rd shower house is being built and all three will be ready for camp this summer! We look forward to Scouts and leaders enjoying these new facilities. The new Veteran’s Gateway in honor of Boxwell’s 100-year anniversary will be completed to greet visitors as they arrive for the start of camp. Names are still being collected of Boxwell Scouts and leader alumni who have or currently serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. One of the most exciting projects of the capital campaign is the new Skilled Trades Center being built at Camp Parnell. We are hopeful that this facility will be ready for summer camp to offer hands-on learning for the trades related merit badges of automotive maintenance, electricity, home repair, plumbing, painting, and welding. American Business, American Labor and Architecture are in the works for classroom learning. The Council is excited about the progress being made and for the enthusiasm that continues to be shown to keep Boxwell Reservation at the forefront of camping experiences for youth in Middle Tennessee and beyond. The 19th Annual Sporting Clays Fun Shoot is a competitive sporting clays event for ADULT (morning) and YOUTH (afternoon) teams with shells, meals and prizes provided. The 2020 Extravaganza was record breaking! Not only was it the first ever Extravaganza done completely online, but it set a record amount raised for Middle Tennessee Scouting programs. The Middle Tennessee Council just kicked off the 2021 Scout Card sale this year. Scouts will begin selling cards to help fund their year-round Scout adventures. The Scout Card is designed to help units fund their way to Scout programs by earning 50% commission on each $5.00 Scout card sold. This is a risk-free, product sale where all Scouts can earn their way to a Middle Tennessee Council camps, Philmont Treks, other activities or simply support unit programs or supply needs. The Middle Tennessee Council offers six regional Scout Cards that will sell for only $5.00. These Scout cards will contain four breakoff coupons for one time use and will have reoccurring discounts of multiple food, entertainment, and service discounts for the consumer to use throughout the year. The 2021 Scout Card sale started on February 22nd and will end on May 28th with final payment due to MTC by June 4th. Who is ready to taste that delicious popcorn? The MTC popcorn committee is preparing to set the theme and marketing plan for the 2021 popcorn sale. The sale will kick off on August 16 and end on October 15. More information will be sent out soon about our upcoming fun-filled popcorn orientations to be held in July. Every Scout deserves a trained Leader Training is critical! Training will ensure that our leaders know how the program works, how to properly deliver the program, why the program is so important. So what needs to be done? First, we need to make sure our District Committees are properly trained. We ask that the District Leadership team lead by example and show their Units that training is important! Each individual member of the committee will have to access the training portal through my.scouting on their own, and take the training that is pertinent to the role they are serving. The District Training Chair should spearhead this effort and cheerlead the process. Each Unit, with the encouragement of the District Training Chair, should appoint a Unit level Training Chair who will watch over the training needs of the Unit, ensuring all registered leaders understand the importance of getting trained, and have the opportunity and resources to do so. Every Unit should strive to earn the Diamond level Training award annually. This award is given to those Units that are able to have at least 80% of their leadership trained. Each District should strive to hold regular, in person classroom trainings to facilitate those volunteers that are either not comfortable with the online training options or would prefer the comradery and Q&A opportunities that are not available online. In addition to in person classroom trainings, Districts should also plan to promote our essential outdoor trainings, either hosting themselves, or working with a neighboring District to provide the opportunities needed for their Scouters. BALOO (or Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is mandatory for Cub Scout Packs to go on overnight camping trips, and IOLS or (Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills) is essential for Scoutmasters to understand the outdoor component of the Scouts BSA program. Beyond these basic training offerings, our Council provides opportunity for advanced training found at the Spring and Fall University of Scouting events, Powder Horn, NYLT, and Wood Badge. Each of these amazing trainings will take the participant well beyond the level of the average Scouter and transport them to the very highest levels of the Scouting movement.

The Middle Tennessee Council has worked together to develop the Scout Safe and Strong Campaign. Focused on keeping Scouting Safe and Strong for the future. 2020 was a very challenging year for Scouting. The campaign will help to rebuild the Middle Tennessee Council Scouting programs over the 2021 year by using community outreach, social media and programming events. Before 2020 the Middle Tennessee Council was one of the fastest growing Scouting Councils in the country and this campaign will help us get back to that level. Dr. Reuben Brigety has agreed to chair this important effort. Dr. Brigety is a Naval Academy graduate, US Ambassador and the 17th vice-chancellor and president of Sewanee: The University of the South. Additionally he is also the Scoutmaster of Troop 14 chartered to St. Andrews-Sewanee School. Official Climbing Instructor Level II training now available in the Middle TN Council Rock climbing is a quickly growing sport. Many of your Scouts likely have been indoor climbing at one of the many local climbing gyms in our area. Most of them though likely have not had the opportunity to rappel off a 160’ cliff. This (or perhaps slightly less challenging opportunities) can build a huge amount of confidence and excitement in your Scouts and even your adult leaders. The Middle TN Council Cope and Climbing committee is proud to announce we have recently received our accreditation to officially offer Climbing Instructor Level II training through our Council. The program requires two weekends to complete. At the end of the first weekend you will qualify to receive your Climbing Instructor Level I trained card (valid 1 year). Then coming to a second session and helping provide instruction, and exhibiting proficiency in the taught skills, will qualify you to receive your Climbing Instructor Level II card (valid 3 years). Once you have your Climbing Instructor Level II card you will be a qualified instructor and able to take your unit outdoor climbing (See Climb on Safely training for more information). You may do so by renting a climbing kit from the Council or using your own gear. Additional instructors required to meet the 6-to-1 ratio requirement must be competent as determined by the qualified instructor and be at least 18 years of age. A great way to become competent is to come to one weekend of our training and become a Level I instructor.
